For most of us, the dream of owning a “super yacht” is just that: a dream. Many of us will not even have the chance to step on board and see the true beauty of one, and standing on the quayside gazing is about as close as we will get. In this issue. however, we all get the opportunity to get that little bit closer as we take a detailed tour of Candyscape II, a yacht commissioned and designed by London based company Candy & Candy. We were so in awe of the scheme that it set us dreaming of sailing away to foreign shores and with this in mind we took a trip to St Lucia to look at a recently constructed hotel - again with an eye firmly on the design and structure of the development.

Yes that’s right, no time for sunbathing or fun! Closer to home, as this is our annual Luxe issue, we have design schemes for private planes - the coolest way to jet off to the yacht or indeed the Caribbean dream destination, as well as design projects in Belgravia and a beach house in Nantucket. So in short you could say that this issue is a very sunny and seasonally appropriate issue. Well we want you to be all set for a very sumptuous summer now don’t we? And this is the first in a run of three hard back issues, look out next month for The World’s Most Glamorous Hotels and August sees the return of The World’s Most Glamorous Homes issue, which have both been upgraded in format this year. Until next month Joanne

Simon Taylor Have you imagined walking into a room that has been specially created with your lifestyle in mind? A design that has made the most of every inch of available space, with cabinets, shelves and drawers exactly where you want them. With Simon Taylor Furniture, a company that makes truly bespoke kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and study furniture you can achieve these results. So what is a ‘truly bespoke?’ The cabinets will be designed to suit your personal requirements, furniture is made to fill the room rather than trying to fit standard sized units into the space. This is a real benefit as you will be able to maximise every available part of the room without having to compromise on the design. Truly bespoke furniture will enable each individual part to have its own personality and make a statement. Many companies offer ‘bespoke’ furniture but often they may have restrictions on design, if you find a truly bespoke company they will have no pre-determined sized cabinets so you can have whatever size, style and finish you want. Ultimately the difference is in the overall design, look, quality, feel and touch of the finished product. Some mass-produced furniture can look very similar in isolation but when put together as complete pieces of furniture there is no comparison. Simon Taylor Furniture has over 25 years experience in producing beautiful bespoke furniture. Many of their clients come back time again to commission other projects - not surprising as the finish is stunning. Their furniture is truly bespoke and no two projects are the same. SieMatic used the international exhibition to launch the new kitchen design due the renowned status of the fair and the high visitor numbers. Those who have closely followed SieMatic will recall that the innovators in kitchen furniture were the first to design a handle-less kitchen range, back in 1960. This design classic has been copied from that day to this, and to mark the 50th year of SieMatic’s pioneering design and innovation, the family owned company has taken this opportunity to re-launch the iconic 6006, but with some subtle refinements and technical innovations. The characteristic curved detail of SieMatic’s 6006 can still be seen and like no other kitchen this truly offers a classic and ‘retro’ feel. This distinctive design has, for the last five decades, inspired the design of kitchens internationally more than any other kitchen. But it has been updated with floating shelves that adapt and continue the distinctive design of the curved fronts, as well as matching curved side panels and an elegantly integrated grip-channel for the wall cabinets.

Neal Jones Furniture Ltd As one of the shining stars of the UK’s cabinet making world, Neal Jones has gained a reputation for creating stunning, bespoke contemporary and classic furniture that is as unique as its clients. With over 15 years experience Neal has carved out an enviable career, designing for some of the very best English cabinet makers, including David Linley & Co, and has a client base that is the envy of the industry.

The SieMatic StoneDesign worktop in Fossil Brown Limestone is prehistoric, dating back 65 million years and incorporates authentic marine fossils to add an interesting contrast. The plinth of the tall cabinets are curved, doubling as a unique design feature whilst also providing ventilation where needed. Another unique design element is the contrasting stainless steel grip-channel in place of a handle that runs across the length of the units. These offer ease of use and little chance of slipping, even with wet fingers. Despite the apparent downturn of the last couple of years in world markets, certain sectors continue to flourish, even boom you may say. A couple of years ago we learned that the shipyards could not cope with the demand for the new breed of super yacht and, just last year, three large luxurious super yachts were launched by three newly formed shipyards. London based design and property company Candy & Candy had been looking for some time for a larger vessel to replace their 43 metres Benetti built vessel Candyscape and to showcase their talents in design and vision.

“an incredible yacht, complete with an interior design scheme which oozes glamour and sophistication; combining exquisite and original artwork, sumptuous furnishing and state of the art technology.”

I was fortunate enough to review Candyscape just two or three years ago. It is an incredible yacht, complete with an interior design scheme which oozes glamour and sophistication; combining exquisite and original artwork, sumptuous furnishing and state of the art technology. However the news that Candyscape II was to be launched left me wondering how, from a design perspective, this could be improved upon. I was naturally excited at the prospect of seeing the completed project and was not disappointed. Candyscape II combines the timeless elegance of the 1930’s with twenty first century efficiency and comfort and a decadent yet relaxed manner, which is perhaps unpredecedented. Complex finishes, leather hide floors, crystal chandeliers, multiple wood finishes and colours from bitter chocolate, through to gold combine to create a classical scheme reflecting the grandeur of the early part of the twentieth century and the height of the seafaring trade. The design is based on the concept of “intelligent nature”. A host of technologies can respond to natural occurring phenomena such as light, temperature and movement and are incorporated into different areas of the yacht. The six cabins will comfortably accommodate twelve guests. Key elements include a split-level owner’s and VIP suite on the main deck with a shared gymnasium. A media room with 103-inch plasma screen

television, a circular glass lift with glass floor surrounds plus a rotating sun bed on the sundeck so that you never need to be in the shade. Head designer Martin Kemp explains that the interior lighting is dynamically controlled to work in harmony with the external environment and is designed to maintain the rooms as the ideal tranquil space or at a desired moment to fill them with energy and vitality. A three dimensional projector in a rosewood panelled study displays the position of a yacht anywhere in the globe and, through a live satellite uplink, overlays the real time weather patterns. Candyscape II also features the World’s first Segmented Sun Orrery – charting the position of the planets in our solar system in relation to the yacht’s location. The attention to detail throughout the design scheme is quite exceptional, the key elements of macassar ebony, black lacquer, black jet beading and dark stained oak flooring being contrasted by an off-white deck head, a silvery white long-piled silk carpet and upholstery in shades of taupe and metallic silver, all moderated by the warm tones of leather wall panelling. This is embellished with an eclectic collection of ornaments, artworks and glass assembled by designers at Candy & Candy. Almond Gold and Perspex also have their place, the former plating the many fittings and dividing strips and the latter particularly noticeable in the Schimmel grand piano with a totally transparent case. All furnishings and fittings are bespoke pieces designed exclusively for the yacht from the sofas and tub chairs to the art deco inspired furniture commissioned by Candy & Candy. Yet grandeur and glamour aside Candyscape II is refreshing comfortable, it is awe inspiring, it is vast in its proportions and dimensions, it is technically advanced but it also a real space where one can feel at home. To achieve this balance is rare, but the combination is an enviable one.

Lighting Directions 38 Design Et Al 33

Design Et Al 33 39

Lighting Directions This is the season to flaunt your taste in aesthetic and luxury lighting. Utility is a necessary criteria but the coming year is certain to see more lavish and grander tastes in the decorative lighting area. Opulence and glamour are essential in any scheme from hereon in. For whilst lighting may have once been considered to be a functional requirement, those days are long gone.

“Dark tones, complicated designs and strong and durable materials will all figure highly over the forthcoming year.”

Lighting directions are quite simple; there are certain key elements to look out for the first being dramatic presence. Deep metal tones with a rustic look and classical appeal will be preferred to more traditional styles. Elegance will be the only undertone for lighter pieces. Otherwise the focus will remain on unique and dramatic lighting. Track lighting is something to steer clear of but hidden track lighting is a good option. Whilst wall lighting has in recent years gained popularity, the idea here should be to go for either a vintage look or a very high tech look for your wall lighting. Moderation is to be given a wide berth this year as dramatic and decorative sconces take centre stage. Chandeliers remain a key staple of many design schemes whether in a traditional or an eclectic environment. Antique designs are

40 Design Et Al 33

always a favourite as is traditional and timeless Murano glass. Fixtures that have elaborate designs and antique hues to them are flavour of the season. It’s really about rich, yet classical styles specifically chosen to compliment the room décor. Dark tones, complicated designs and strong and durable materials will all figure highly over the forthcoming year. Chandeliers are of course the most commonly understood and seen antique lighting feature, but there are other lighting accessories and fixtures that qualify as antiques and are perfect additions to a small room. Antique wall sconces, lamps, lamp shades and antique oil burners are some of the pieces to look out for that will increase in popularity as time moves on. Black metal hurricane lamps and rustic lanterns are some other antique looking decorative lighting that are classic additions for all kinds of rooms. In conclusion, it’s time to make grand statements with your carefully positioned lighting. Be bold in your decisions, passionate about your choices and do not shy away from over sized options. The key is size and scope, dimensions are over stated, textures and finishes are opulent. ighting is no longer functional it is one of the key design elements in any scheme from a decorative perspective.

Nantucket, USA; a jetsetters retreat and a place of natural beauty lined with pristine sandy beaches where long snowy winters give way to warm summers. This small island off the coast of New England, just 3miles wide and 14 miles long, is a place where recreational activities maintain a high profile. Windsurfing, sail boating, cycling and fishing are all offered here in a scenic family friendly setting. No wonder this location has become a playground for the rich!

“Describing her style as eclectic and sophisticated, Kathleen likes to get a balanced mix of materials, wood, metal, stone, wool and glass in each room.”

Nantucket based interior designer, Kathleen Hay of Kathleen Hay Designs explains that the bulk of her work has been on homes on the island. Many of the clients who approach her see their Nantucket residence as their second home. This was the case with Quidnet Road, a new build located on the northeast side of the island with sweeping views of the moors and the inner harbor. Completed in 2007 for a young Boston based couple and their three children, Quidnet Road was to be a summerhouse retreat, a family orientated space in which the clients and their children, aged between 4 and 11 years old, could relax. That said the couple were also keen that this impressive 15,000 square foot residence should be a place where they could entertain. So for Kathleen the key imperative was to combine comfort with sophistication. Incorporating a pool house and garage including gym and guest quarters in addition to the main house with its 9 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms and lower level with movie theatre, games room, wine cellar, laundry and quarters for the nannies- the interior design for Quidnet Road really was a major undertaking. As she was on board with the project from an early stage, Kathleen was able to work closely with the architects and carpenters and influence the shapes of the spaces and the choices of materials and woods used to ensure that everything ran according to plan. The couple

wanted a very contemporary feel, open plan with vast open spaces, interesting architecture and curved lines. The proportions of the home are immense and octagonal walls are found on the turrets in the dining room and curved walls in the kitchen. “Working with curves does present quite a challenge for the interior design of a space, there are no walls for the furniture to sit against,” Kathleen explained. Another consideration was the stipulation that all of the furniture must be ‘floating’ as the clients wanted to be able to move it out of the way when they were entertaining. Extensive open spaces though presented the biggest challenge, as they needed to be filled. Regular sized furniture would have been swamped so all of the sofas, coffee tables etc. had to be custom made to a much larger size. In the kitchen a double depth granite needed to be used as the normal inch thickness would have disappeared on the huge 12ft by 5ft island units. Located right at the centre of the building, “the kitchen is truly the hub of the house.” It opens out on all sides into various living areas and is even over looked from above, so it was important to tie it in aesthetically with all of the spaces stemming from it; there had to be a sense of flow. Inspired by nature and bringing a sense of the natural world into our living environments, Kathleen used natural elements throughout these spaces – tying them together with this common theme. Another tool that she used to create cohesion was the introduction of a ‘colour story’. Describing her style as eclectic and sophisticated, Kathleen likes to get a balanced mix of materials, wood, metal, stone, wool and glass in each room. Though she avoids words like modern and contemporary, which she feels carry clinical overtones, she does like clean lines and comfortable living. In her own home, she explains, she brings in these elements, incorporating

the natural world to an even more extreme level with seashells, feathers, birds nests and very neural colours. Dealing with aesthetics every day in her working life, she likes to come home to something restful. Incorporating nature has also been a success in Quidnet Road. It has a real summerhouse style, very open to the elements with vast expanses of windows. Kathleen’s choice of window treatment really works here. Clean, light, airy and unfussy white shutters – it is deliberately a very simple choice. The couple want the sitting room room to be comfortable, not stuffy in any way, so Kathleen used soft textures, pale milk chocolate wool on the club chairs. Taking care to stick to the ancient Chinese philosophy she added various different materials, wood and metal to give balance. An extra long deep sofa helps to fill the space. “The client wanted quite a hip feel which was achieved by using very unique accessories” she explained. “Cow horns on the coffee table, shell medallions and tree trunk lamps help add interest here. This is a great room, you get a real feel for the weather in this room, the expanses of windows make it a great place to be when there is a thunder storm. Nantucket is a great place to work, it is a home to master craftsmen – you don’t find this throughout the US. The carpentry is a feat throughout the house. The level of detail is gorgeous.” Like many of her clients, they were after a complete service, so Kathleen specified everything right down to the towels and napkin rings. “Second homes are often great to work on as clients generally allow you to have a bit more fun with them,” she continued. “It was a real honour to work on something of this proportion, it was so large and I was essentially given a blank canvas so it gave me a chance to stretch myself as a designer and the opportunity to work on spaces that not every project calls on you to do.”

Private Jets The Only Way To Travel?

The recent ash cloud problem, which dominated and restricted world travel a few months ago, meant that for many of us, essential travel became a problem. We expect to be able to travel for work, business meetings, appointments and of course during our leisure time. We take it for granted and turn up at an airport almost like we would catch a train or bus. For me personally this meant that a business trip to Milan was out of the question, as was a weekend away in Venice. Is it time to consider the private jet as a viable form of transport? Is it something that we really need to look closely at?

“Today’s billionaire wants a 360 degree ‘luxury brand experience’ that is totally unique to them and their lifestyle. They want the design of their apartment, house, super yacht and more recently private jet and helicopter to reflect the same quality and innovative design.”

My sister and her family by contrast were stranded in America; her problem was coming back to the U.K in complete contrast to mine. Her solution was to travel by private jet, courtesy of her husband’s company, who swept in and airlifted them out and home again in total comfort. “It is the only way to travel”, she claimed as she described her journey back home. “Without stress or inconvenience of any sort.” Needless to say she is not looking forward to the queues to check in at Heathrow next time she flies Virgin Atlantic. With so many possibilities to consider, we thought we would take a closer look at the design schemes of private aircraft, a viable option for some, but perhaps a distinct area of growth in the very near future. With international travel high on the agenda of the super rich, the award-winning interior design and development management team at Candy & Candy have unveiled interior and exterior designs for a futuristic aviation fleet; including a Bombardier Global Express XRS Jet and Augusta Westland AW139 Helicopter. The super rich are demanding an increasingly high level of bespoke detail and exclusivity and are prepared to spend more money in creating this ultimate luxury lifestyle. This extends beyond creating a customised interior for a house, apartment or super yacht and is now focused on creating bespoke interiors for private aircrafts. Nick Candy of Candy & Candy comments: “Today’s billionaire wants a 360 degree ‘luxury brand experience’ that is totally unique to them and their lifestyle. They want the design of their apartment, house, super yacht and more recently private jet and helicopter to reflect the same quality and innovative design. Our design for the

Global Express XRS Jet and Augusta Westland AW139 helicopter moves away from the conventional aircraft interior and introduces more sophisticated elements. The livery of both aircrafts has also been specially designed to incorporate Candy & Candy branding. Our concept designs have already attracted a healthy client waiting list. We continue to be uncompromising in our dedication to pushing the boundaries in what can be achieved on land, sea and air.” The inspiration behind the design of the jet was to create an interior that represents ‘international travel in the 21st century’. Two bulk heads divide the cabins; each one incorporates a stylised, angular version of the world map in a patented metallic finish of platinum and silver. To add synergy, iconic world references created by renowned artist, Helen Murray are embroidered on the inset wall panels. Inspired by a unique vintage 1940’s gilded mirror, the four tables feature a striking angular metallic design and are created from smoked nickel and carbon fibre. A combination of cool greys, slate blues and off white’s, matched with sumptuous leather, grey cocobolo and angular walnut veneer adorn the cabins and break away from a classic jet interior. The fuselage is divided into two sections; a flexible living room area that transforms into a board room and a separate bedroom area complete with a double bed, kitchen and bathroom. In total the jet comfortably seats up to 14 guests and sleeps six guests. The revolutionary interior design of the Agusta & Westland AW139 features embossed leather embroidered with twin needle stitching is an iconic statement. A beautifully crafted central boardroom table holds a 23” double sided pop-up plasma screen. The leather ceiling and the detailed carbon fibre joinery, grey mascassar and cocobolo together with brushed diamond and gold metal trim completes the opulence of this unique design. The livery of both aircrafts is consistent, creating uniformity whilst the interiors are contrasting in design. A striking sweep of charcoal black covers the bottom of the fuselages with a defining gold trim and Candy & Candy mark. The exterior design presents clients with the unique opportunity to create their own bespoke branded aircraft.

Kamini’s international upbringing exposed her to different communities and design sensibilities from an early age. Her exposure to the apartheid rule in South Africa, the cosmopolitan nature of Hong Kong and metropolitan life in London and Los Angeles have enabled her to infuse her work with an understanding and sympathy from a range of influences and styles.

“There is a distinct timeless glamour here that is quite dramatic, almost theatrical, in places, but is neither austere nor overpowering in any way.”

Kamini is particularly fascinated by the design ethos of South East Asia, often incorporating elements of clean simplicity, symmetry and Feng Shui principles into her work. She has found over the years that following these basic principles allows a sense of understated elegance and calm consideration to define her work. Above all, she takes pride in the fact that her designs successfully reflect the personalities of her clients and dovetail with their lifestyles. Her clients in this instance were wishing to sell their home, it had been a comfortable family home but they had come to the point where they needed more space, so they brought in designers and architects to work on their home prior to putting it on the market. The brief was to produce a dramatic, luxurious home appropriate for the area. Kamini’s aim was to create a home with a real identity and a unique quality, whilst retaining a broad appeal. The home needed to appeal to a family or a young couple. There was an architect working on the project when Kamini became involved, and some work had commenced on the project so in short there were no mouldings, skirting or architraves. The architects made some structural changes to the building and the roof deck was added. Kamini’s company, however, designed the doors throughout the home and selected the flooring, opting for pale green oak for the first level of the home to match the scheme throughout which was also imbued with strong colours. The upper level has carpeting throughout. The overall look and feel of the scheme is

unreservedly luxurious, there is a distinct timeless glamour here that is quite dramatic, almost theatrical, in places, but is neither austere nor overpowering in any way; in fact the word comfortable, simply sums up the way one feels when they enter the home. The entrance creates a wonderful first impression, walls have been clad with antique mirror and cladding carefully conceals doors, the effect is glamour at its most dramatic. Kamini’s brief for the drawing room was more formal. She believes symmetry creates formality, however introducing symmetry was going to be a problem in this room as it wasn’t symmetrical in shape. The difficulty was overcome by creating two separate areas in the room. A formal entertaining space with two bespoke sofas and a slightly more casual cocktail seating area. “The client chose a sleek and contemporary Bultaup kitchen,” Kamini explained. “But for the dining area she wanted to create glamour and a sense of drama. We added mosaic installations against the wall, linked the two rooms with a leather joinery unit which housed the TV and painted the architrave bottle green - very dark tones were selected and roman shades were chosen to soften the scheme.” “It is hard to identify a favourite area of the home,” she continued. “Different areas of the home, speak to me in different ways. However I love the drama and fun of the kitchen and dining room, they work beautifully together and are very inviting and I also love the cocktail area, it is a very unique space.” She concludes however that it is all about teamwork, there are ten designers in all who work for the company and all members of the team work in a very hands on way. “So when the client is thrilled, as in this instance, it is great for us all as it is down to a team effort.”

“The fifty suites many of which have private plunge pools and spacious verandahs affording stunning views of the bay below.”

St Lucia’s dramatic mountainous scenery tropical rainforests, waterfallls, mineral hot springs and golden beaches make it one of the loveliest islands in the Eastern Caribbean. As you know we regularly feature some of the most glamorous hotels in the world, hotels that are interesting from a design perspective, but are also in some of the most enchanting locations in the world. Of course we would not show you anything that we had not visited ourselves and could fully recommend.

restaurants make this the ultimate holiday experience.

So with winter really kicking in and starting to bite I took a plane to St Lucia, a Caribbean island I had never visited before, to take a look at one of the Caribbean’s most design conscious hotels - Discovery at Marigot Bay.

Suites are spacious and very private situated in little clusters throughout the bay. Ours came with a vast living/dining space, very well equipped kitchen, utility room, balcony, terrace and private plunge pool with jets. Although sumptuous the interior scheme is classically contemporary and relaxed rather than stuffy and overpowering. Lines are clean and functional, yet beautiful.

Marigot Bay was for hundreds of years a hideout for pirates and also the scene of a historic battle , more recently however its steep forested hilsides and hidden anchorage have made it a popular location for action movies and old favourites such as Dr Doolittle. The hotel blends into its beautiful suroundings enhancing the natural lovliness of the bay described as “the most beautiful in the caribbean” by novelist James A Michener. The luxury resort provides guests with every possible modern facility. The fifty suites many of which have private plunge pools and spacious verandahs affording stunning views of the bay below. The interiors are a stylish combination of contemporary chic, state of the art fittings and Caribbean pizzazz. The world class Lapli Spa, fitness centre, watersports, marina shopping, bars and

It is a ten hour flight from the U.K to St Lucia , but even for those of us who are not keen on the long haul flight, the journey is well worth it to escape the harsh cold winter back home at least for a week or two. Sunshine, light and warmth instantly are relaxing and the combination of this and the comfortable and luxurious hotel here at Marigot Bay are perfect0.

The view from balconies and terrace is straight accross the bay to the rain forest, super yachts moored in the bay for several days and smaller yachts to charter break the view, but offer an impressive diversion. The main restaurant is pretty, airy and ideal for breakfast or a more formal dinner. We opted for the more informal Hurricane Hole bar for lunch most days and the incredible Rainforest restaurant just a short boat ride away for dinner, on several occasions. Dining on a waterside deck that extends over the bay is wonderful and the food is simple but good. I cannot recommend it enough, it is the perfect romantic hideaway.
