Virserius Studio Compete for the Lobby/ Public Areas/ Lounge Award in the IH&P Awards 2015 design et al are delighted to announce shortlist success for Virserius Studio in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015. The Hyatt Regency Montreal Lobby will compete for the Lobby/ Public Areas/ Lounge Award in the fifth annual awards. Located in the Place Des Arts in Montreal, the Hyatt Regency had always sponsored a tremendous amount of cultural activities. However, prior to the renovation, the design of the hotel was completely disconnected from its involvement in the local arts. The goal was to create an artistic journey for the guest where they could experience literature, fine arts, music and film in a subtle, sophisticated and surprising way. When the guests arrive at the hotel, the first thing they see is a map of the world laser-cut out of corten steel. The steel will age over the passage of time, a reminder that everything is always in a constant state of change.

5 Design Industry Weekly News

As you enter the lobby on the lower level, you see that the map has been transformed into a wood planking structure. As a further extension of the theme, a topographical pattern is woven into the hand-tufted carpet. An example of the ordinary becoming extraordinary, this depicts a cartographer’s work as an artistic expression. The elevators bring the guests up to the main check-in level where they step out on a New York Blue stone floor and walk toward the check-in area. This features a cantilevered wood canopy that has been laser cut with a beautiful abstracted flower pattern that is backlit. The concierge desk was conceived as a freestanding sculpture that would break from the typical concierge desk. The guests’ passage through the hotel becomes a journey through art and storytelling which compels them to continue to explore and enjoy yet another stay. www.virseriusstudio.com Read More

Meyer Davis Achieve Further Shortlist Success in the IH&P Awards 2015 Meyer Davis have achieved further shortlist success in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015 with a second project, W Chicago Lakshore, competing for the Hotel Over 200 Rooms Award (Americas and Caribbean). Meyer Davis has designed a distinctly modern urban escape filled with dramatic glamour for the newly renovated W Chicago Lakshore. Meyer Davis’ design concept for the W Chicago Lakeshore was formed on the basis of three intrinsically architectural themes – Chicago’s history and tradition of architecture, the hotel’s iconic Lake Shore Drive locations, and shadows and reflections of innovation. The design showcases the confluence of a vibrant world-class city meeting the serene edge of Lake Michigan

and pays homage to the architectural ingenuity of Chicago. It mirrors the city’s energy, invention and industrialism. Sleeker, sexier public areas include a new signature farm-to-table restaurant, a living room concept space, and an expansion of the hotel’s prime meeting and event space, which boasts 360 degree views of the city. W Lakeshore is characterized by modern lighting, energetic colors, contemporary furniture and sleek finishes that mimic and reflect the vibrant city skyline and reveal layers of the city’s architectural ingenuity. Vivid, modern and textured lighting energizes public areas and is used to create specific architectural moments. This is seen with the alternating digital images above the “conversation pods” – intimate, semi-private lounge settings separated by beaded drapery adjacent to the bar. A luxurious elements is Meyer Davis’s modern Heatherwickinspired “oyster” that frames the rear of the restaurant. Read More

Queens is a fresh and contemporary five-story building which retains the existing facade of an old cinema, while new elevations have been designed to compliment the art deco styling. Sixteen apartments have been created above the ground floor retail space. Derwent London have until now, been developers of office buildings. This was a

departure for them so the project needed to be something very special and unusual. The building itself was interesting and held vestiges of its past life as an art deco cinema originally designed by J. Stanley & Clare in 1932. Rather than demolishing the building in its entirety, this art deco facade acted as a starting point for the design and inspiration and the facade was retained and refurbished, which included horizontal banding of bespoke glazed terracotta.

TYIN tegnestue Architects Shortlisted in IY&A Awards 2015 design et al are delighted to announce shortlist success for TYIN tegnestue Architects in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. The TRD Heinemann store will compete for the Retail/Leisure Space award. TYIN was asked to design this regional area in the Heinemann store at Trondheim Airport. The project has two main objectives. First, to show the uniqueness of the city and its cultural heritage. Second, to create something authentic and real, in stark contrast to the otherwise artificial and sterile

environment of the airport. Hiding behind the facades of Trondheims unique wooden buildings are the backbones of Norwegian building tradition, the timber log structures. This way of building is several centuries old, and still in use today. Trondheim is also known for its steel industry related to shipping and seafare, another integral part of Norwegian cultural heritage. TYIN began the process by searching for an old, traditional log house typical for the Trondheim-area. The log house dates back to the 1880s. After saving it from certain destruction, it was carefully dissected and moved it to an indoor building hall. The rotting logs were removed, and the shape

of the remaining structure dictated the design. The project is carried by miniature pier houses, a common trait of Trondheims traditional building mass. The miniatures are silhouette replicas of actual buildings. The steel shelves are burrowed deep into the timber logs, with each module containing a complex network of electric wiring, supplying the shelves with LED-lights. Remaining logs were cut into pieces and used to create a natural wooden back-wall. All work on the project was done by local craftsmen in a local setting. www.tyinarchitects.com Read More

First of all, it comes from the Yanqi lake and the surrounding mountains. We want to create a building integrating into the context. The sunrise on the lake expresses this atmosphere accordingly, showing the integration of the nature and the building. It is also from the old Chinese philosophy of Circle. Not only could a circle interact with surrounding landscape with its soft edges, it also represents a Chinese value on intergradations of human beings and nature. It also becomes an image of sunrise on the water which has tremendous culture impact to Chinese from thousands years ago. We have so many poems and painting about sunrise. Since it is also built for APEC summit, the circle shape can also be read as a sign of cooperation

for all different countries. From the architectural perspective, the shape of the building creates interesting interior space simultaneously. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? Architecture is the combination of art and technology. Sustainability and humanity are always very important for architecture design. It is important to create a project which has high architectural value. We have to respect nature with sustainable design. However it is more crucial to have a building could encourage most people in the society including laymen. That is why I am working on the integration of traditional Chinese culture and the modern architecture. A great building should be enjoyed and celebrated by the whole society, not only by academic world. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2015 and beyond. Sustainability, Technology, Energetic atmosphere, Humanity, Art If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design, what would it be? The architecture design is not a project for one person, but also a Representative of a certain time. And trying to learn from everything, especially our traditional culture. It will be a great recognition and encouragement of our design philosophy and the hard work of our team! It is also a way of communicating and exchanging knowledge. We are really looking forward it.
