INTRODUCTION I am delighted that The International Hotel & Property Awards have developed at such a rate that they are now no longer a part of The International Design & Architecture Awards, but an Awards event in their own right. The projects short listed are as always interesting but more than this they are “dreamy’, the book of short listed projects reads like a guide to you ultimate getaway. With everything from the ultimate ski retreat, to beach resorts on distant shores, the best in city and rural hotels, small boutique spaces and larger upscale developments there is something to interest us all on a personal level, as well as from a design perspective. I am very much looking forward to showing you a little more in the coming months of the winning projects and enabling us all to step inside these luxury retreats. For now though this is a snap shot of the very broad mix of projects from throughout the world, short listed for 2014.

Ireland’s finest Neo-classical house, Ballyfin, was transformed through conservation and repair into an exquisite and comfortable country house hotel.
˘ ˘ Located within Laguna Lang Cô, Banyan Tree Lang Cô is the first and largest world-class integrated resort in Vietnam.
The design brief was to restore the house with great sensitivity and a strong understanding of the estate’s significance and refurbish it to serve as a five star hotel followings years of dilapidation and its former use as a school. Scholarly research by the architects and historians informed the conservation and skillful restoration of the house by Irish and English craftsmen. The house features fine dining, wine cellars, a lively bar and a large and comfortable library with books on Irish art, architecture and history, carefully repaired and adapted. Purcell remodelled a modern, four-storey dormitory extension to provide an additional wing, with bedrooms, ballroom, swimming pool and spa. As part of the restoration, the interiors at Ballyfin have been sympathetically restored and reinvigorated. The brief was to create the impression of an Irish country house from which the family had just departed, leaving behind all that previous generations had accumulated over the years. Each of the 14 bedrooms is individually and sensitively decorated to respect the eclectic nature of the Irish country interior. One of the building’s best features is an iron and glass conservatory, designed by Richard Turner and added in 1851. When the property fell into dilapidation, the conservatory was near ruin, covered in rust and the glass almost green from exposure to the elements. Following analysis of the materials and finishes and their condition, all removable components were recorded and taken down for blast cleaning, repair and repainting off site.
The site faces a three kilometres beachfront overlooking the East Sea of Vietnam, an area renowned for its pristine coastline, natural scenery and proximity to many UNESCO World Heritage sites. The beach is flanked by two hilly peninsulas offering a more private ˘ enclave for the hotel. Banyan Tree Lang Cô is located at the far end of the bay where the heavily forested hillside not only serves to define the boundaries of the site but offers the best location for the 75 units of hill villas. Carefully positioned between existing large boulders on the steep hillside, each villa offers incredible sweeping views of the East Sea while maintaining maximum privacy. The 17 units of beach villas are arranged in a horseshoe formation to maximize beach frontage while the 32 units of lagoon villas are arranged overlooking the lagoon with dramatic views to the majestic Truong Son mountains. The simple architecture reflects the rich cultural and historical legacy of past Vietnamese dynastic periods. The main buildings and villas are built with clay tiled pitched roofs, open courtyards and wood rafter ceilings, in the style of the traditional simple garden houses of Hue. From the beautiful glazed ceramic bathroom tiles to the bamboo flooring and ornately crafted lacquer-ware, materials throughout the resort are distinct to Vietnam, paying homage to the skill of local artisans and giving the hotel its unique strong sense of place.

Brimstone at Langdale is the first development of its kind in the Lake District offering “beyond-boutique” luxury hotel rooms and suites. Housed in their own building with private garage and each with a large balcony, the Brimstone luxury hotel suites will offer something not found at other Lake District hotels. There are five room types available. Spa Suites comprise a generous lobby, bed zone, living area with two love seats with double doors giving access onto an enormous balcony. A double-sided wood burning stove sits between the living area and spectacular bathroom area. The Duet Suites are the size of a good two bedroom apartment. The lobby area gives access to the walk in shower, vanity and WC cubicle and the main bed space. Mezzanine Suites comprise a lower level with living area, wood burning stove, WC, dining area and a stunning feature bath. The Fireside Suites comprise a generous shower room with walk in shower, WC cubicle and slate vanity. There is separate feature bath area within the room. The bed and living area has wood burning stove and TV housed in a timber panelled wall. Finally, although the smallest, the Ultimate Rooms are bigger than a modern 5* hotel room. The fully equipped armoire units have a minibar, nibbles, cocktail making equipment and ice bucket –all beautifully designed. The contemporary and innovative design blends seamlessly with the stunning Lakeland landscape and the extensive spa and restaurant facilities on the Estate.
The Capella Georgetown is located alongside its historic C&O canal and the cobblestone sidewalks of the chic and famous Georgetown district in Washington D.C. The hotel is featuring 49 guest rooms and suites. An elegant restaurant and lounge, featuring seasonal dining overlooking the Canal, highlights amenities that include an executive boardroom, a rooftop pool and bar and exclusive spa. It is a renovation project and so the boundaries were set for the space planning of the hotel. Nevertheless the interior was asked to be redesigned to provide guests with a calm, private and secure setting and a strong focus was requested on the details to create a sophisticated ambience with plenty of space and a masculine touch for the property. For that, careful design and attention to detail was given to ensure every hotel guest to have a luxury experience with his stay at the designed property. For a luxury boutique hotel like this side, the selection of materials and FF&Es are of great importance to dictate how the guests would touch and feel the space. The hotel is comprised of a rich a palette of materials and finish to create a distinct icon in the heart of Washington.

Category: Hotel Under 50 Rooms Project Name: El Secreto Location: Belize, C.A Interior Designer: Aldonza Prioux Architect: Abraham Saade Completion: October 2012
Situated in a peaceful fishing village surrounded by sand dunes and coconut trees, the hotel was designed to offer luxury tourism in a naturally beautiful and sophisticated setting.
El Secreto is a barefoot luxury couple oriented resort. An idyllic place for Honeymooners, Wedding Anniversaries, Proposals or Special Family Reunion Getaways.
Carmel Charme Resort has 35 apartments all overlooking the sea, which are 24 suites, 9 lofts (duplex apartments) and 2 luxury bungalows with private swimming pools. Each unit has its own ambiance allowing several opportunities for different experiences. There are also fantastic indoor and outdoor pools which also have a sea view. The Resort’s secluded location allows guests to feel like they’re on a private beach. It has a modern structure for leisure and relaxation: heated swimming pools, restaurant, wet bars, bar, gym, sauna, jacuzzi, tennis court, games room, spa, library, kids club. Combining comfort and elegance for a high class public, the suites, lofts and bungalows were thoroughly furnished with designer furniture and art pieces, combined with a high quality finish. Each piece and detail was carefully chosen or designed by the architect.
El Secreto is composed of 13 independent Mayan thatched roof villas distributed along the ocean front, a tropical vegetation area and around a salt man made lake. Each of them beautiful in it’s own particular way. They are all one- bedroom villas measuring between 1188 sq ft and 2093 sq ft. with a practical yet interesting and original layout. Each Spa, Sea, Lake and Tropical Villa offers something different, although for honeymooners it has to be the full ocean view Spa Villa with private steam room, massage cabin and infinity pool. A smart combination of contemporary and traditional elements has been used throughout El Secreto. A Belizean tropical wood, Barbajolote, was used for the furniture, closets and doors of the villas. The fine Italian marble bathrooms are complete with tandem sinks, rainfall shower, hot tub and access to a private outdoor patio with a rainfall shower. The king size bed tempur-pedic matresses dressed in Vivenda’s 400 thread-count Egyptian cotton linens and the pillow of your choice will drift you away to a perfect and relaxing sleep.

The designers’ brief was to transform an existing hotel - a hybrid of a 19th century banker’s private villa and a 1970s glazed extension into a boutique property with 22 new spa suites. Taking inspiration from views of the nearby Château de Clervaux, JOIDesign set out to produce the sophisticated and luxurious ambience of a grand hotel brought up-to-date with stylised baroque features interpreted through a contemporary lens, spiced-up with delightfully unexpected details. The design concept proposed the creation of a boutique hotel comprised entirely of suites with in-room spas. The ‘modern baroque’ interior concept is introduced to guests from the moment they enter the building. A plush crimson carpet on a polished ebony floor leads guests towards the lobby through a silver and grey damask-patterned hallway with finely-cut metallic charcoal chandelier shimmering above. The private dining rooms have been given an intimate residential ambience consistent with the heritage component of the building in which they are located. The handsome carpet design was created from historical tiles in the hotel which, combined with dark parquet flooring and heavy drapes set against espresso toned walls, emphasise the building’s noble tradition. The 22 suites comprise three distinct styles – Château, Classique and Young Spirit. The design aesthetic for the Classique Suites, in the main house, is reminiscent of the shapes, colours and patterns most strongly associated with a stately grand hotel. The more opulent Château Suites are fitted-out in hues of deep red, graphite and black in a fresh interpretation of baroque style. A lighter feel has been given to the Young Spirit Suites, where smooth lines with soft curves offer a calm and understated alternative. Exceptionally generous bathrooms equipped with jacuzzis, deluxe showers and deep freestanding tubs offer guests a complete in-room pampering experience.
A 39-key luxury resort comprising 1,670-acres,12 one & two bedroom beach villas, 23 cliffside cohios, spa, 18-hole golf course, and beach club. Borrowing its name from the Mayan word for “secret,” Mukul Resort is the first luxury beach property in Nicaragua. The discrete and environmentally intelligent architecture blends harmoniously within the lush and extensive natural beauty of the site. There is an architectural tradition within the early wood and stone buildings that rim the Pacific Coast. These structures use indigenous materials throughout and offer minimal vertical expression. To take advantage of the incredible views and pleasant climate, these buildings have fewer walls, which make each structure feel completely open to the outdoors. Sustainable design principles are at the heart of the architectural approach, ensuring that Mukul is not only energy efficient, but also employs sound environmental strategies to help regenerate the landscape. Structures are designed for optimal natural ventilation and use methods to collect rainwater for treatment and re-use. Solar power is harnessed, and electric vehicles are used for transport around the site. With invigorating offshore breezes, idyllic tropical weather and spectacular mountain and ocean views, this new seductive resort environment blurs the distinction between inside and outside. Each bohio and villa experience is unique and authentic, and each designed with its particular surrounding in mind – in harmony with the topography of its specific perch on the beautiful hillside or beach-front, overlooking acres of natural beauty, unspoiled beaches, and turquoise waters.

Set within the natural tranquility of the surrounding Olive Bay, the hotel offers a luxurious retreat with 32 guest rooms.
Eight years in the making, Topping Rose House is eclectic, classic and clean, maintaining a strong sense of the natural beauty and sophistication akin to the Hamptons.
The design brief for Olive Bay Hotel was to create a relaxed retreat that responded to the natural beauty of the location in an intuitive manner. The client wanted to ensure that the design celebrated the exterior whilst at the same time maintained a subtle business edge and informed formality that befitted the business of the primary guest; that being the formal purchase and hand-over of the large freighters manufactured by Oshima Shipping Company. The design of the hotel needed to suit the grand nature of these monthly occasions while at the same time deliver a resort experience to the guests. The bay location is spectacular and the architecture and design celebrates this throughout. The arrival is a seamless transition from the spectacular drop off with the artfully framed view to the elegantly simple reception tables. Deliberately positioned in front of the 5 metre high glass windows, the guests are immediately immersed in the serenity of the bay beyond. In the guestrooms the glazed bathrooms are pushed out the front of the building. The rooms echo the patterns of the water in the gentle carpet patterns whilst the colours echo the woods outside. Whilst the planning is deceptively simple, the subtle use of screens and mirror inserts has created a room of great volume and complexity. The planning was deliberately open allowing vistas and light into all areas of the room. Most importantly the guests are allowed time and space to connect with the unique and beautiful landscape.
The historic 1842 estate, named Topping Rose House, has been transformed into a luxurious destination inn. The property features an acclaimed restaurant and bar, 22 bespoke guest rooms and amenities including a wellness centre. Guest accommodations include luxury suites that have been configured within the historic mansion, twelve new guest cottages and three modern studios within a contemporary addition. A refurbished 19th century barn serves as a studio for private events. The suites are adorned with Tolomeo bedside sconces and custom-designed iron chests. Within the cottage suites, beds are crafted from reclaimed wood with custom upholstered headboards. Colour and pattern are used to create bold accents. Lime green and blue Madeline Weinrib rugs complement graphic pillows from John Robshaw Textiles. Black Windsor chairs pair with midcentury tables, befitting the inn’s origin with a contemporary look and feel. The design seamlessly connects old and new worlds, blending contemporary and traditional elements that emphasise comfort, luxury and the original antique appointments of the property. Luxury accommodations in historic buildings are rare on the East End of Long Island, and The Topping Rose House is no exception; the property is one of the only 5-star hotels in the Hamptons.

The name of Sharjah’s very first exclusive 5 star boutique hotel comes from the number of rooms available, hence H72, but the idea goes even further in that everything inside revolves around numbers, mathematics and equations.
Built in 1907-08 by the famous Art Nouveau-architect August Endell, the construction is valid as an extraordinary historic building. Since 1917 it was one of the favoured hotels in Berlin and celebrated its first period of prosperity in the twenties. After many different uses it was rebuilt from 2010 and reopened in December 2013.
From place names to design concept, everything in this five star establishment is touched with logic and rationality, from the sleek outlines that permeate throughout the building, to the recesses and outcrops that are judiciously placed, projecting perfect angular shadows and giving depth. Sudden flashes of clever and upbeat colours unexpectedly appear, giving surges of emotions where only an instant before cold calculated level-headedness prevailed. Walking into any of the suites at the H72, the first thing that strikes you is the simplicity and the straight forwardness of the contemporary lines. The design concept is clear: practicality and an open pragmatic scheme that is very pleasing to the eye. With a main banqueting area that can seat up to 92 guests, but also with a private room for a more select dining experience, the modern and elegant eatery provides an all-day buffet with a wide selection of dishes and cooking stations and panoramic views of the corniche. Situated on the first floor is the state-of-the-art business centre. With a maximum capacity of 160 people, the four separate rooms are ingeniously designed to be modular and sectional in order to accommodate every possible business meeting requirement. No five star hotel would be complete without the perfect tools for its guests to relax and re-energise themselves, and with its pool, gym and spa the H72 has exactly that.
The public area of the hotel is arranged on the ground floor such as the main entrance with lobby and reception, restaurant and bar, boarding rooms and smokers lounge, public toilets and back office. The guest rooms are located on the upper floors 1 to 5 - every room was individually designed in relation to the existing architecture, some of them even with original stucco. There is one suite on the 4th floor and two Spa Suites on the 5th floor. The Spa and gym area is located on the 5th and 6th floor. The 6th floor has been added in close cooperation with the preservation order. In the so-called ‘roaring twenties’ many celebrities, artists, and foreign aristocrats living in exile in Berlin, met and celebrated in this hotel. In the guest rooms and public area bost group berlin used high quality and precious materials e.g. rosewood, marble, highly polished wood and leather, in keeping with the luxury design of the 20s. The extraordinary decoration in the rooms and public area was designed with original motives of the 20s in Berlin, printed in black and white on glass. Most furniture, decorative lighting and rugs were designed by bost group berlin and specially made for the project. Photographer: Lucas Müller

Le Meridien Bali Jimbaran is an elegant resort set by the pristine white sands of Jimbaran Bay on Bali’s southwestern coast. Its overlooks a 1,300 square metres swim-able saltwater lagoon and features 118 guest rooms, suites, penthouses, and villas beautifully designed with a contemporary style infused with Balinese culture. The concept for Le Meridien Bali Jimbaran is to provide a destination that exudes timeless chic & culture. Timeless chic is seen in the presence of art/graphics, mid-century aesthetics in the furniture (guestrooms) and asymmetric designs. The designs are more understated oddities rather than in-your-face eccentricities. An example would be the varied designs of wallsconces / pendant lights in the guestrooms and the mid-century inspired desk chairs as opposed to the typical ergonomic chairs. Culture is established in the juxtaposition of heritage/traditional elements with contemporary ideas. An example would be the headboards that are in the rooms. Batik prints are scaled up to add visual texture and a sense of location for the guests. As Jimbaran is known to be a fishing village, design elements of this industry can be seen on the graphics, and in the use of recycled boat timber as a material together with the blue tones around the hotel. Le Meridien Bali overall feels fresh and upbeat. You wake up in a bedroom with a scaled up batik print headboard and immediately get a sense of place. The size of the property is adequate enough to encourage the traveller to go around the village or to the beach; then have a more secluded place to come back to.
The legendary Prince de Galles, part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Luxury Collection, remains the Parisian residence for discerning travelers who seek a sophisticated and intimate environment. Prince de Galles is reminiscent of Art Deco during the 1930’s, drawing inspiration from designers such as Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, and Eugene Printz. Its public areas have the appeal of an intimate salon; the 159 opulent guestrooms and suites were imagined as private rooms in a luxurious Parisian residence. The entrance and lobby present classic Art Deco interior architectural features, and custom furniture and furnishings, by local Parisian artisans. The entrance, flanked by two bronze sculpted boxwood plants, leads to a Saint Laurent marble clad sitting area with a one-of-a-kind gold leaf chandelier hung in the center. The lobby elevators feature ironwork over mirrored walls – a reinterpretation of the hotel’s original birdcage elevators from the 1930s. Alabaster lanterns light the grand staircase from the lobby to the fitness center. The guestrooms incorporate colour palettes of celadon, blue and ivory, accented with reds and purples; headboards were surrounded by floor to ceiling mirrors to create a visually expansive space. Bespoke furniture made from mahogany and ebony woods, and artwork, emphasize a traditional Parisian aesthetic. Each guestroom has a dressing area with large closet, and sitting area that presents panoramic views of Paris. Modernist bathrooms have distinct decorative touches, such as the light play, angled mirrors and detailed mosaic designs in the showers. State-of-the-art technologies are discreetly embedded throughout the property.

Exclusive 5 star hotel blending in a unique tropical setting with large beach frontages and inner mangrove lagoons. The hotel had to be laid out to make maximum use of the unique features of a site with large beach frontages and inner lagoons with protected mangroves. The main building had to be designed with a very strong visual axis to give a prestigious look to the whole set up. The design of the entrance creates a strong sense of arrival to the guests. The long walk from the drop off to the main Hall with spectacular view over the infinity pool and onto the sea flanked by reflecting pools creates a unique atmosphere. The main Hall, Restaurant and Bars are laid out in a U shape around the main pool. The extensive use of water features and natural materials such as stone, timber, granite & thatch give the building a strong tropical atmosphere well adapted to Mauritius. The accommodation consists of 76 Junior Suites, 12 villas and a Princely Suite. Some of the suites are built on stilts on the lagoon around the protected mangroves while others on the beach front. The princely suite consists of 2 junior suites and one senior suite villa with a central courtyard, outside Living Room and 2 swimming pools. A ‘Spa’ is designed around a central courtyard with spacious treatment rooms with their own private courtyards. The facilities also include a gymnasium, squash court and sauna as well as a Kid’s Club.

The building is a contemporary interpretation of Meiji period (1868-1912) architecture, with interiors inspired by the dark, mysterious atmosphere of machiya—traditional Kyotian wooden townhouses. With the guestrooms, there were a number of challenges to overcome. The atmospheric, nighttime ambience continues in the guestroom corridors lined with low, washi lantern-inspired lighting leading the way to the hotel’s 136 guestrooms. In order to take advantage of the mountain views and maximise frontage, the rooms are long, and due to height restrictions, the ceilings are relatively low. To combat this, Remedios has created a low aesthetic, focusing lighting and furnishings on horizontality rather than verticality. Pipe chases were organised to maximise space in the guestrooms and Remedios turned the redundant, remaining spaces in the corridors into a feature, installing wooden fins to articulate the passageways and create unexpected elements of interest. Due to the city’s stringent seismic codes, the rooms feature a deep beam at the window, leading to a projected faux balcony. Inspired by the concept of engawa (a Japanese verandah), Remedios has turned the beam into an architectural element, wrapping it in wood and lighting it from behind. Wood flooring and detailing is light in colour, as one would find in Japanese homes. In addition, the engawa inadvertently inspired a new guestroom concept. Rather then create a conventional work area with a cumbersome desk, plus a separate living space, Remedios has created one multi-purpose area furnished with lounge chairs and a lower-than-average table that functions as a desk or dining table.

A grand hotel with a saltwater-stained past, where the seafaring heritage of the town is made visible in a unique experience in a unique place. The project is located in the port town of Umeå, northern Sweden, hard by the Baltic Sea and at the end (and the beginning) of thousands of seafaring routes.
The Breakwater Hotel is a combination of two historic, art deco hotels located in the South Beach Historic District.
The 82 rooms are divided between six categories, all named for the ideas closest to the sailor’s heart. The master suite is called “Freedom”, which is symbolised by the soaring seagull that features both on the holographic door, and in the wallpaper above the bed, and finally, in the magnificent open-to-the-skies trompe-l’oeil ceiling. The suite, which comprises a huge sitting room, a bedroom, and a double bathroom with its own sauna, occupies a space that was once the hotel’s banqueting hall. There are also four junior suites, called “Passion”, comprising a work area, a table for meals in private and a generous seating area with overstuffed settees and armchairs. Naturally there is also a bedroom and a bathroom with double showers. The “Yearning” category are the family rooms, some of which are fully accessible, and “Mystique” and “Adventure” are the deluxe and standard rooms respectively. In the smallest and cosiest rooms, Superstition, sea creatures writhe in the wallpaper, and you sleep in spacious bunk beds. Stylt Trampoli think of these as their sailor’s bunks, but unlike any sailor’s bunk ever, they have bathrooms just as luxuriously outfitted as the other rooms, and splendid top-floor views over the city and the river. Up here is also where you can see another Stylt favourite: the attic staircase, like an avalanche of broken furniture and driftwood coming down through a hole in the ceiling. Throughout the hotel’s corridors you can see Stylt’s custom-designed wallpaper (full of hidden life) and carpeting featuring octopuses and sea urchins.

The team’s inspiration was the Art Deco theme of the historic district, but their approach was interpretive, creating a modern interior with Art Deco references, either as iconic elements or as art. The program required that the two buildings be transformed into a boutique lifestyle hotel, attracting a younger clientele. The project’s Ocean Drive location is the heart of the most vibrant and active part of South Beach, with a direct view of the ocean, a perfect location for the target market. The ground floor of the hotel is a center of activity. The front porch and courtyard are filled with diners enjoying their libations. To add to the vibe, a new glass fronted swimming pool has been constructed on the roof of an existing one story structure at the rear of the courtyard, in the middle of the action, so that guests can enjoy a spectacular view of the beach and the ocean while swimming underwater. The hotel lobby is located in the Breakwater building, and is a study of contrasts. Ultra-modern furniture has been mixed with iconic Art Deco pieces, set against the restored background of the space. The new room sizes are very generous, and have been designed with the comfort of the guest in mind. All of the guest’s needs have been carefully considered and incorporated into the room design. The focus of the room is a unique headboard designed by Andi Pepper, inspired by Art Deco fabrics, and printed in ultramarine. This is set against a neutral background with accents of lime, creating a harmonious, beach-oriented environment. Lighting is a key component of guest comfort. An original chandelier designed with Art Deco touches provides the ambient lighting.

Located on a gateway to the Ashburnham Triangle Conservation Area in Greenwich, this former Metropolitan Police section house was designed by McMorran and Whitby Architects in 1944.
Stunning views, carefully considered details and a delightful equine theme make the Ritz Carlton Almaty a top destination with a difference for tourists and business travellers alike.
The client, Periquin Limited came into ownership of the building in 2008. The design team set to work on reviving the building in 2009. The project brief sought to restore the external appearance of the existing building, retain the majority of the external Architectural features whilst proposing an overhaul of the building’s internal layout and function. Externally, works were confined to the construction of a two-storey extension at roof level, where a contemporary, lightweight glass structure houses premium accommodation, boasting uninterrupted views across Central London and the City. The internal layout of the building was subject to sympathetic modification, allowing the design team to maximise the internal capacity whilst incorporating generous hotel facilities. Consultation with the local Conservation Area Association, and the public throughout the design process ensured that the proposed design was developed in line with community aspirations for the area. Restoring a redundant building to this new use has provided a substantial uplift to the surrounding area, allowing an existing landmark to be reinstated.
Kazakhstan is a relatively new travel destination and the Ritz-Carlton Almaty is one of the first luxury hotels in the area. With this in mind, the main idea was to create a hotel that would become a meeting place for travelers from all over the world to discover this new and attractive destination. The building is located in the heart of Almaty and the design is used to showcase the best of what the city and the surrounding mountains have to offer. It skilfully blends in elements of the local culture, through the artwork as well as the architecture, by framing the views over the city and the spectacular Alatau Mountains with the grand windows. All the necessary amenities and functionality of a five star luxury hotel are catered for, enabling the Several areas of the hotel to have truly striking features for example, the Sky Reception. It reflects the interplay of luxurious materials, such as the harmonious colour schemes, reflective surfaces and modern forms, with the oversized chandeliers. A gigantic window pane on the 30th floor captures the view of the sky at dusk, presenting and awe–inspiring view of Almaty. The luxurious hallways, lined with marble and fine grained wood, lead the way to lavishly furnished suites. Each space is carefully considered and the materials are carefully chosen. In the presidential suite for instance, the spacious private dining area displays a mix of elegant furnishings and opalescent materials that reflect the sunlight during the day and glimmer with the soft lighting in the evening.

The ground level and mezzanine floors have spectacular views of the Opéra and provide the perfect setting for a signature W Living Room where guests and locals are invited to mix, mingle and relax in a stylish social atmosphere. RGe designed many of the features throughout to appear as if melted or electrified by “The Spark:” these include conventional tufting on the upholstery that have disappeared to form irregular patterns on the sofas, benches along the window and paneling on the walls; and the chevron pattern on the black terrazzo floor, crown molding and column paneling that fade as they approach “The Spark.” Guest rooms and suites feature three-meter ceiling height and breathtaking views of the Opéra. All W suites will boast an existing fireplace, white marble bathrooms and oversized dressing rooms, the perfect place for guests to prepare for a night out in Europe’s fashion capital. RGe has taken the light and energy that pervades all the public spaces, and infused it into many unexpected elements in the guest rooms. It begins at the entrance where a black metal bridge wraps around the corridor, with a backlit pattern of white rooms, from molding that breaks into different pieces, sculptural faucets, faceted headboards, and pillows and blankets with embroidered customized spark logos. The Wow suites at the prow of the building are defined by a 9 foot round sofa that splits into different seating arrangements; secret showers hidden behind two huge, classical Parisian doors; many kinds of preserved and restored historic moldings and wood paneling; one fireplace in the bedroom, and one in the living room; and an oversized contemporary bed and bathroom.

The complete refurbishment of the existing Crowne Plaza hotel to create Ace Hotel’s first hotel outside of the US, Ace London. The design was to reflect the Ace brand but most importantly to be a hotel for London and reflective of its Shoreditch location. The Ace Hotel includes 258 guestrooms, a 1,800 square foot seventh floor event space, a destination restaurant and a 3,900 square foot lounge and reception area. Ace were keen to remain true to the existing building form and draw inspiration from the site as an old music hall. Universal Design Studios were appointed to develop this concept with EPR Architects as Executive Architects providing the technical design. The guestrooms undertook a soft refurbishment while the ground floor and basement were completely stripped out and reconfigured to create all new public areas. The key element to these public areas being to bring the building back to the street with a complete refurbishment of the façade and a return to the idea of a traditional ‘high street’. Collaboration and the use of traditional local craftsman and artists was also essential to the implementation of the Ace brand and a key factor throughout. All aspects of the design were to be considered in equal importance to create a building with ‘soul and spirit’ – music, acoustics, aesthetics, flexibility, functionality, comfort and public interaction were all vital to the success of the hotel. The public areas include a reception, lobby area, gallery bar, café, destination restaurant, basement live music venue and retail units.
The Hotel boosts Adana’s riverside outdoor activities and sets itself as a landmark that is grasped from every part of the city. The Sheraton Hotels Chain initiated to develop a significant project in the southern part of Turkey. The city of Adana with its strategic location and vibrant urban life has been seen as an attractive and adequate host for this important investment. Appealing to the Eastern Mediterranean region, Adana Sheraton Hotel is likely to strengthen the tourism facilities of the city and sets new standards in hotel architecture. The Brief highlighted the issues to be followed in design development stages; integration with urban life; being a regional tourism destination giving references to Mediterranean life; reflecting the Sheraton Brand standards with the highest qualities; contributing to the vision of Adana to be a focal point in the Eastern Mediterranean. The brief put a particular emphasis on the architectural identity of the hotel building and asked for a dynamic and distinctive character with a solid and sober outlook. Adana Sheraton sets itself as an alternative option to foster an outdoor culture rather than being a conventional introverted hotel. It emerges as an urban curtain and animates the riverside with its dramatic outlook representing the fluidity of water. The gradual rising of the building regulates the scale and helps to avoid oppressing the riverside where human scale is essential. Adana Sheraton differs itself with its vivid design and enriches the architectural settings of Adana while dignifying the riverside. The terraces will inspire visitors who experience the pleasant view of the Seyhan River.

Mandarin Oriental Guangzhou is a luxury hotel property influenced by the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures with a mélange of diverse styles such as British colonial style and 21st century living.
Aligning with the existing storehouses the nhow Berlin Music and Lifestyle Hotel by the Spanish nh-group is located at the River Spree, only 10 min walk from the U-Bahn Station Warschauer Straße adding a whole new chapter to the history of the site at the formerly important city harbor of Osthafen.
By applying the concept of traditional Chinese courtyard architecture while implementing an articulated space planning strategy throughout all public areas and guestrooms, the owner and designers maintained a close collaboration to integrate the desired design concept seamlessly throughout the entire property resulting in a maximum efficiency of circulation allowing for open spaces, a sophisticated food and beverage program portraying the sense of privacy and intimacy of a “home away from home”. The property consists of 233 rooms and 30 suites, a Spa and Fitness facility, a Chinese restaurant with nine private dining rooms, an oak bar, an all day dining restaurant, a private club lounge with its own library and walk-in service kitchen and an elegant yet modest Cake Shop as the property’s retail component. The Guestrooms and Suites which consist of 233 rooms and 30 suites respectively present a unique aspect of hotel guestroom design. The influence of Chinese courtyard architecture provide a corridor in separating a valet walk-in closet, two separate bath areas for a vanity and bathroom areas, and the bedroom quarters. Mandarin Oriental Guangzhou was conceived to provide a timeless luxurious experience both for the traveler and the local people of Guangzhou.
The structure of the building and the façade design reflect and complement its special location. A huge cantilevered cube cites the motif of a crane cabin, whereas the façade’s surface mingles nicely into the ubiquitous brown stone materiality. The volume accommodates seven floors divided into two blocks, each forming an open U-shape onto the water, connected via a glass interstice. The western block is topped by four additional floors in a separate volume overpeering the banks, where the exclusive nhow suite gives access to the roof terrace and offers optional access to an in-house sound studio, cantilevered on about seventy feet and hovering eighty feet above the water. On street level a floor-to-ceiling glass band with large-size panels distinguishes the hotel from the neighboring old storehouses. The façade zone above is formed by a perforated brick coat with irregularly arranged square windows loosening the rigorous, repetitive appearance of the neighbours. The chosen brick varies in color as well as in its line-up, adding a vivid optical brigo to the massive volume by its irregular surface. The top levels wear a highly reflective aluminum cladding and allow splendid views to the southwestern skyline of the city through an all-glass double façade. Photographer credits: ©Roland Halbe

Rockwell Group took both its 20 years of experience of designing Nobu restaurants worldwide and the experience of crafting brands into creating a hotel that fully represents the Nobu lifestyle. The interior of the Nobu Hotel lobby is covered in wood creating a simple, yet dramatic single gesture that defines the entire space. The walls and ceilings are comprised of custom wood blocks made from fir, hemlock and oak, in random and irregular shapes, sizes and colours. The walls also feature backlit onyx panels that extend from the floor to the ceiling. For the guest rooms, which occupy 10 floors above the restaurant, Rockwell Group incorporated Nobu’s “truth-to-materials” aesthetic into forms that accommodate the Nobu Hotel guests’ expectations of comfort and modernity. Raw, natural materials in neutral tones are juxtaposed with hints of purple and unexpected, bold graphics representing traditional and contemporary Japanese forms. The guest room corridors feature a custom designed carpet with beige tones inspired by a Japanese Zen garden. Rockwell Group designed three suite types for the hotel: the Hakone Suites, Sake Suites and Nobu Penthouses. Six suites have media rooms and eight suites feature pool tables to create a true Las Vegas experience. Every master bedroom in all three suite types features custom gold leaf wallpaper with a cherry blossom print manufactured by de Gournay. Located below the premiere Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace, Nobu Restaurant and Lounge Caesars Palace is the largest Nobu Restaurant worldwide. With more than 325 seats, the restaurant features a sushi bar, teppanyaki tables, and an exclusive private dining area. To set the tone, colourful, patterned dining pods and undulating screens wrap the dining room while oversized cloudlike light fixtures complement the atmosphere. Natural, textured materials combine with oversized elements to create a space as entertaining to see as it is to dine.

Rosewood London, located in High Holborn and housed in the original headquarters of the Pearl Assurance Company, opened in October 2013 after a sensitive renovation of the 1914 Edwardian, Grade II-listed building. The entrance to the hotel is by way of a stunning and very unique Rose Bronze Entrance Gallery – this sets the tone of the building by mixing contemporary design with the historical sense of the building. The public areas are well curated in the sense that they all have a totally different look, but meld well into each other and possess an array of conversation provoking design elements enhanced by quirky art. Combining English heritage with contemporary sophistication, retained Belle Époque architectural features include the original carriageway entrance to the grand courtyard and a spectacular Pavonazzo marble staircase which rises over seven storeys. The hotel has the feel of a stylish London residence and offers 262 guestrooms and 44 suites including the Grand Manor House Wing, an exclusive six-bedroom suite with its own postcode. This was designed by tonychi and associates, who also created the interiors of the public areas including the 11 event spaces and the Mirror Room, the hotel’s elegantly social dining room. The Martin Brudnizki designed Holborn Dining Room, with outdoor terrace, and the warmly welcoming bar, have their own entrance onto High Holborn. There are many elements of surprise and discovery in the design beginning with the grand carriageway entrance which leads to a distinctive courtyard giving a sense of arrival more akin to a private manor house than a hotel.

Striking a balance between traditional architectural customs and elegant luxury, AB Concept employed traditional Confucian motifs and recurring Chinese symbols to convey the sense of place and pay tribute to the location. One such cultural emblem is the traditional Lo Shu Square pattern used throughout the hotel. The square-within-a-square motif is revealed in the architecture and interiors where the designer has adapted and repeated the pattern in ceiling reliefs and marble floors. Inspired by the principles of Confucian philosophy – Order, Harmony and Hierarchy – AB Concept expressed these values through a masterful fusion of subtle patterns and sleek symmetry. As guests enter the imperial-style lobby and reception area, the Chinese architectural principles of balance and symmetry are clearly evident. The design team has reinterpreted the traditional Chinese lantern and designed an oversized metal Wisdom Lantern that frames the central skylight and contains hundreds of smaller lanterns. Optimising the natural light and surrounding greenery, floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer guests all-encompassing views of the Qufu landscape. The hotel is the city’s first international luxury property. Within walking distance of the Temple of Confucius, the hotel is already regarded as a local attraction with residents drawn to its central location and breathtaking façade. Its majestic design is a striking silhouette on the horizon, evoking the appearance of a traditional Chinese pagoda with its imposing pillars, interlocking beams, delicate latticework and upturned eaves.
On the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and the Adyar river, The Leela Palace is Chennai’s first and only seafront city hotel. Drawn from the inspiration of Chettinad Dynasty, the architecture of the luxury 5 star Palace Hotel exudes the regal and opulent style. Set on 4.8 acres of land, the 11- storeyed hotel features 326 rooms and suites. Equipped with world- class amenities, the meeting and conference centres are luxuriously and lavishly spread. Its close proximity to the central business district and local attractions, on top of having a spectacular sea view make this hotel truly special.

Ireland’s finest Neo-classical house, Ballyfin, was transformed through conservation and repair into an exquisite and comfortable country house hotel. The design brief was to restore the house with great sensitivity and a strong understanding of the estate’s significance and refurbish it to serve as a five star hotel followings years of dilapidation and its former use as a school. As part of the restoration, the interiors at Ballyfin have been sympathetically restored and reinvigorated. The brief was to create the impression of an Irish country house from which the family had just departed, leaving behind all that previous generations had accumulated over the years, including souvenirs from the Grand Tour and design inspirations acquired when travelling abroad: Ballyfin should be comfortable, stylish, discreet and Irish, with layers of history to be unravelled and enjoyed. Each of the 14 bedrooms is individually and sensitively decorated to respect the eclectic nature of the Irish country interior. The ground floor reception rooms were given the same care and textiles that were typical of the Empire or Regency period were researched and recreated. This can be seen in various details, including the wallpapers of several bedrooms and reception rooms which are old Mauny designs, recreated from documents. Purcell retained almost all of the original material with repairs and replacement of any material done in the manner and form of the original work.

The City of Dreams is a gaming and entertainment complex on the famous Cotai Strip Macau which incorporates three hotels (Crown, Hard Rock & Hyatt) and an interconnecting retail, entertaining and gaming complex. MAP was appointed to resolve all public design areas in order to maintain the construction program. For the Hard Rock Hotel suites, the client wanted an experience for its guests unlike any other they could find in Macau. MAP’s services included the provision of ‘rock star’ interiors for the suites. The interiors had to capture the Hard Rock brand ideals: fun and the party that doesn’t end. It also had to follow the ‘City of Dreams’ theme – flowing water, the Chinese symbol of good luck. While a very American brand, the hotel design had to appeal to a largely mainland Chinese clientele. Each of the Hard Rock Hotel Rock Star suites has a series of sinuously interconnecting spaces that enhance the separate functions of the bedroom, bathroom, living areas and lobby. MAP’s vision for the suites was to create a stage for the high roller guests to act out their rock star fantasies. Each suite comes with a multi-purpose room with a selection of distractions such as: musical instruments, (drums, grand piano and guitars), golf and motor racing simulators, and the all-time favourite – a bucking bronco! There are no corners in the Hard Rock suites. Every space and piece of furniture in the suites is curvaceous, seamlessly integrating with the base building architecture and the City of Dreams theme. The furniture has been custom designed for comfort and conversation – such as the living room ‘brontosaurus’ sofas. Materials include leather (a must for every rock star), animal print inspired cushions, cow hide upholstery, shag pile carpets and modern black lace curtains.

Lotte Hotel Moscow, the first hotel project of Lotte Group in Europe, offers 300 rooms including the Royal Suite, occupying 490 m2. As the unprecedented suite type for Moscow hospitality market, the Royal Suite is designed to create a terrific impact. The rich and powerful design style is split through the layout: the more masculine living and dining public area uses imperial navy-grey and gold colours, whereas the private space is designed with a more feminine, romantic style featuring claret reds, burgundies and gold. The glamour and luxury of the place is wholly supported by intricate hand carvings on furnishing and hand-made crystal handblown glass chandeliers. A sense of luxury is created thanks to unique, hand-made silk and woollen rugs, the very highest quality in Italian furniture, designed especially for the hotel, natural silk fabrics and refined gold candelabras. The bathroom interior contains items made to individual order and reflects the overall style of the suite, complementing them with honey shades of onyx and granite. The bathroom is fitted with a jacuzzi and opens up a picturesque vista over the city. The Royal Suite occupies an area of 490 m2 and combines bedroom, bathroom with sauna, sitting room, conference hall, dining room, study, office and winter garden. The suite is designed in a contemporary interpretation of the traditional eastern style, with classical Korean trends in architecture complemented by western aesthetic designer solutions. The colour range in the suite is soft and calming, with a predominance of creams and gold hues, subtly contrasting with brown shades.

The design across the resort takes inspiration from the Island Light concept, which is the signature of all LUX* properties – a lighter, brighter interpretation of luxury. Designer Kelly Hoppen made use of a neutral palette of white, cream, taupe and beige, and layered it with bright and zingy accent colours; turquoise, fuchsia, soft yellow, apple green, chinese red. Fabrics, predominantly linens and cottons, complement other beach-inspired textures – such as water – like lacquered surfaces, bleached wood trestle tables and tongue-and-groove bathrooms. In-room collateral has been kept to a minimum, allowing Kelly to place more emphasis on carefully selected artwork and objects. The architects Christophe Gébert and Stéphane Fabre have designed and built distinctly Mauritian villas. True to island tradition, the combination of high sugarcane thatched roofs and volcanic rock walls make the villas seamlessly blend in the tropical gardens, whilst allowing for tall, cool interiors. The interior design is another nod to the crossroad of civilisations that is Mauritius. The 8 Ocean Villas face the sea and have a private walkway leading to the beach. The rich granite bathroom and its sunken bath is totally irresistible, with its picture window overlooking the private swimming pool.

This 5 Bay suite sits on the top floor with views of the Bay and is the pinnacle of luxury.
A charismatic duplex suite set in a turret of the Corinthia London and conceptualised around the character of a London Politician.
In order to experience luxury by the bay, one has to step in this Luxury suite at The Leela Palace. The suite features a Formal living room, Dining room, Powder room, and Study area, Master Bedroom with full Ensuite bath and a walk-in wardrobe. It is developed with the ambience of traditional Indian architecture with contemporary design overlooking the seafront. Marble flooring upon entry sets the tone with crystal chandeliers, silver, teak and inlay furniture. Silk and velvet fabrics complete the palatial ambiance. It is adorned with beautiful antiquities, and an amazing collection of art and artifacts.
GA Design International were tasked with creating seven unique Penthouse suites in the fantastic upper floor spaces and unrivalled turret areas of the Corinthia. The team decided based on the hotel’s prime London location it would be fun to look at a “typical” Georgian street and thought about different inhabitants. The team initially came up with about 20-30 different types of people (or characters) and then matched character with space. Location within the building, views of London, internal and external space all played a part in getting the correct personality in the best location to work with the theme. Each “personality” would then have bearing on the finishes and materials used. The Whitehall Penthouse Suite was conceived as being a politician’s, (primarily Winston Churchill who stayed in the original Metropole hotel) and the team imagined them spending their time at refined gentlemen’s clubs around London; they wanted a powerful space that reflected this. Dark timber wall panelling, leather-panelled bookshelves and bold colours were used to realize the desired look. To contemporise the space a lime wash was added to avoid it being too heavy or traditional. The layout of the lower level gives pride of place to a large bespoke desk, made from dark walnut with a leather inlay. The bathroom features a walk-in shower encased in Nero Marquina stone and a bespoke Apaiser stone bathtub, with flooring formed from three varieties of marble. Outside, the private terrace boasts views of Whitehall and Big Ben, whilst a giant chess set provides a quirky spot of entertainment.

The whole suite is covered in soft grey marble with inset of custom-made rugs that capture the contemporary botanical design concept of the hotel’s brand. The spa emerges as a sculptural form from the natural landscape, blurring the edges between built and natural form. Facilities are arranged on two levels: a lower level with pool and gym, and an upper entry level containing the changing rooms, treatment rooms, lounges and cafÊ. Carbon neutrality is the future for all modern designs and Coworth Park Spa is leading the way in the hospitality industry as an environmentally-advanced estate. Spa facilities are naturally energy intensive due to the high heating requirements, lighting levels and environmental requirements of the various treatment facilities offered. Coworth Park Spa is unique in its design which maximises the natural elements surrounding the building to offset the carbon impact of these requirements. Its excellence and exemplar status is endorsed by being the world’s first spa to incorporate the ground-breaking use of carbon negative lime hemp walling combined with an innovative timber glulam monocoque structure that is reflected in the bowed timber ceiling to the spa pool, reminiscent of the underside of a boat. The living roof is at ground level to the rear and merges into the woodland floor of primroses and bluebells whilst creating a 21st century garden of lavender, camomile and thyme, further demonstrating the increased biodiversity of living roofs within the built environment and adding to the thermal efficiency of the building. Spas are traditionally high water users and Coworth Park Spa has sought to reduce water uses across a wide range of measures. The ultra-violet pool has reduced backwash and overall water consumption and energy requirement without the excessive need of chemicals.

The project was highly influenced and inspired from Eskisehir’s thermal water resources. The project is a modern interpretation of Odunpazari’s vernacular architecture and existing historical texture. The site plan is formed after a careful consideration of the existing trees’ positions in order to minimise the damage to the site. The complex includes a spa and wellness centre in the middle, and accommodation units on the perimeter. There is also a hotel, a wedding venue, and guest bungalows located in a hillside pine forest. The resort is built around the spa, which comprises the core and centre of the building. It is no coincidence that Eskisehir Spa & Thermal Hotel is located here: The idea of the Eskisehir Spa & Thermal Hotel was conceived to use this natural resource for spa. The spa is coupled with earth, taking advantage of the site’s geothermal features. The hotel is tiered following the natural topography and revolves around the spa in order to provide easy access to all of the hotel guests. The wedding venue is designed as a separate function from the hotel. The project touches on the sustainable design aspects by making use of wind and solar energy. The geothermal energy is not used only in the spas, but also for the space heating during cold seasons, via a geothermal heat pump system.

The residential suites are arranged in a semi-circle of five, five-story buildings positioned to create maximum ocean views within each suite. Two buildings have immediate beach frontage and the other three wrap around the sinuous infinity edge pool, hot tub, and swim-up bar and grill. The one, two, and three bedroom suites were designed to allow full rental flexibility as the property is operated as a condominium hotel. The character of the resort was inspired by classic, colonial Barbados architecture. The open air lobby welcomes guests in typical Caribbean fashion, melding interior and exterior spaces. The lobby space leads to the exterior retail courtyard, situated in front of the resorts main restaurant. As guests make their way past the public areas, they meander through pathways situated within lush vegetation. On-site irrigation is achieved with reclaimed water. In an effort to design the guest experience as one of indulgent serenity, the housekeeping operations are located entirely within a back-of-house basement. The basement areas connect all five lodging buildings as well as the swim-up pool bar and grill. The 25,000 square foot spa adds to the serene atmosphere with eight treatment rooms surrounded by water on three sides. Renowned architect and interior designers Joseph Dirand and India Mahdavi created every element of the interiors from the rooms to restaurants, the private chalet to the chair by the fireplace. They have produced a chic, contemporary design that is soft, comfortable and luxuriant. India Mahdavi has worked around the world on residential, hospitality and scenography projects and has established a reputation for her fresh and colourful approach. Together with Joseph Dirand they merged to create a unique style for L’Apogée Courchevel, which relates more to the language of a château than a chalet. In design they found the perfect balance between contemporary and historical reference that is ‘authentic yet not nostalgic’. Joseph Dirand is renowned for his hyper-sophisticated and architectural style. He found L’Apogée Courchevel a generous space and also felt clearly that it would be more of a home. This is transmitted in the design which is intimate and comfortable, with cosiness and warmth that corresponds with being in the mountains. The world’s most enthusiastic skiers and their families will have the finest ski holiday imaginable. The restaurant offers relaxed, high class cuisine and the bars are casual chic. Le Spa de L’Apogée is irresistible and children will adore their dedicated club. The architecturally striking holiday resort comprises 122 hotel apartments as well as a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. The architectural concept strives for a high degree of authenticity in relation to the natural landscape by assimilating the forms and materials of the region and interpreting these in a new way. This can be seen in the way the seven separate, cubic, buildings are arranged – like scattered rocks around a central space. The external facades of the new buildings are made of massive, broken Valser Quartzite that comes from a nearby quarry.
Located in Auberge Discovery Bay, Café bord de Mer reflects an oasis of calm and a dignified lifestyle. With its open-plan layout, interactive cooking stations and timber finishes, Café bord de Mer reflects a relaxed lifestyle. The full-length windows invite sunlight to stream into the restaurant, creating an airy, light-filled environment, and rewarding guests with panoramic views over the South China Sea. One of the key aspects of the project are the feature columns. The Idea of these columns is inspired by the “Message in a Bottle”: People put a message/wish in a bottle, and toss it into the ocean, so that the columns appear to be the shape of rolls of letter papers tiding with a metal string. This luxurious restaurant provides a mixture of holiday style and relaxed coastal atmosphere that is difficult to come by in a busy city. It is indeed a wonderful escape from the reality.

Located on the very top floor of the Conrad Seoul, the 37 Grill and Bar and adjacent Executive Lounge enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the Han River and city skyline.
The brief was for the creation of a new 120 Cover Restaurant as part of the upgrade and soft refurbishment of the existing 396 Pullman bedroom hotel.
As a long, rectangular floor sharing the same kitchen and back-ofhouse areas, the challenge was how to transport food and drink between the spaces, without reducing room width. The solution was to create two transparent, open-plan show kitchens in the 37 Grill and Bar and place the service corridor immediately behind them. Now, the activity around the kitchen is celebrated, rather than hidden, and adds buzz to the restaurant, while disguising the service traffic to the Executive Lounge. To whet the appetites of guests, Remedios has placed a glass case by the restaurant entrance, displaying dry-aged meat. Meanwhile, to add a sense of excitement to their arrival, he has installed an open exhibition bar at the entrance, where signature cocktails are crafted before being presented on glass spotlights, like stars in a stage show. To the left of the entrance is a lounge bar featuring a DJ booth and a variety of seating options catering to guests’ differing predilections. Intimate sofas overlook the Seoul skyline; bar stools at a high table offer views of both Seoul and the mixologists; open sofas in the centre of the lounge appeal to the see-and-be-seen crowd; while semi-shielded seating evokes a VIP feel. A range of dining experiences is also available in the 90-seater dining space, offering open dining; cosy tables by the windows; two private rooms; or an elevated chef’s table between the show kitchens.
The aim of the project was to deliver a memorable, rewarding experience; exciting venue & enhanced reputation – the destination of choice within the 12th Arrondissement. The restaurant design was to focus on the hotel’s & location’s appeal to a relatively broad target market (business, leisure and residential) guests: with a new identity and an F&B concept centred around wine. The result is a rich and timeless product with very firm roots in Bercy offering a credible base for a wine-led restaurant. The interior has been enhanced to provide an open, fluid space with areas of contrast, creating both intrigue and intimacy. ‘Vinoteca’ by Pullman has a strong, innovative presence and is effectively integrated within the hotel lobby; key features such as an impactful, (400 bottle) glazed wine display and an inviting entrance are clearly defined as part of the new identity. Stone counters & timber flooring help to reinforce an authoritative style and guests are encouraged to interact with both ‘food & drink’ as part of a dynamic, yet comfortable experience. Subtle lighting & the introduction of discreet curtains, soften the backdrop whilst, creating a sense of drama, with banquets and a central dining table providing curiosity & choice for guests to savour the moment. Category: Restaurant within a Hotel Project Name: Lotte Hotel Moscow Location: Moscow, Russia Interior Designer: Hirsch Bedner Associates and Wilson & Associates Completion: September 2010
The all-day dining Lakeside Cafe is one of the most memorable dining places in the 520 room DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, Wuxi, China. The scope included the redesign of existing plans and the interior design of four restaurants, lounge, bar, and conference centre, as well as designing the bedrooms and hallways. The client wanted to create an international five star hotel to appeal to domestic tourists, and on a wider scale, to the MICE market. The preference was for south-east Asian architecture and design but MAP felt this theme for the hotel didn’t fit well with the environs and strong local heritage. Key to successfully delivering this project was being able to lead the client to a design which amalgamated south-east Asian elements and local Chinese vernacular. The Cafe is decorated in natural materials employing a minimal palette of soft colours based on the brown tones of the freshwater lake. A carpet was specially woven for the hotel, designed to give the effect of sunlight dancing on the lake’s surface. The freshwater tones perfectly complement the dark wood trim for the doors and surrounds. Traditional dark-wooden oars from the lake junks are used as decorative elements. Robust furniture was used with colour tones complimentary to the ‘sunlight-on-water’ carpet. MAP works on a ‘big idea’, in this case, it was placing one of the wooden 20 metre freshwater lake Chinese junks (which can only be found in this area) inside the restaurant, complete with five masts and sails. Dining takes place in and around the junk, making the space perfect for food and creating a conversation piece.
Located on the second floor of the luxurious Lotte Hotel Moscow, a French restaurant Les Menus presents classic French delicacies with a modern twist by Michelin three-star chef Pierre Gagnaire, culinary innovator and artistic creator. The whole layout can be separated into three different zones but is flexible enough to be combined into one consolidated place whenever required. The guest is invited to first enter through a gallery housing a Bar-Lounge and wine shelves. The reception is placed centrally between the bar and the restaurant itself. The wine cellar leads into either fine-dining hall on the left or breakfast area on the right. Those two can be closed off in classic style, by collapsible folding screens with an open residential in style food counter in between. Moulding profiles on the walls and tin ceiling have been super-scaled and twisted by applying modern technique – high gloss finishing mixed with gold-silver leaf. Patterns on the top rise above chic oversized furniture featuring chrome and gold, rather than traditional wooden frames. Modern silkscreens on the back of sleek slipper chairs promote the idea of ‘old meets new’. Lighting is also oversized, representing traditional European lantern forms with crystals integrated into fabric shades. The marriage of crystal chandelier and lampshade within one lighting asset is the first candidate to enter a newly-born design vocabulary. Les Menus previews private dining rooms along the side with a semi-transparent wall giving a comfortable feeling embraced by floral patterns. The overall space of 720 sq. m with 100 seats is embraced by luxurious and elegant interiors created by Wilson & Associates who have been featured in the top three design companies worldwide.

Silks Restaurant, located in the Crown Metropol Hotel in Perth, Australia is 8000 sq feet with 240 seats, including a sky-lit sunken dining area, semi-private dining areas, 5 private dining rooms on two levels and a custom wine room.
Rich dishes and fantastic views of the bay enhance the atmosphere here; exceptional service, exquisite cuisine and high-energy add spice to the experience.
With a menu based on traditional Cantonese cuisine but specialising in fresh produce from Western Australia, the goal was to create a space with the regal elegance befitting of the Silks brand, while bringing a fresh and contemporary approach to the interiors. The oval main dining room features an intricate back-lit feature ceiling, hand-painted with traditional Chinoiserie patterns in parchment, ivory and gold, but the main event is a collection of dramatically scaled, custom vases, using traditional Chinese designs commissioned in sparkling Italian glass mosaic tiles. Chinese lanterns are reinterpreted in blown glass and suspended with red silk braided cords and tassels. Silk clad walls are framed with traditional timber lattice panels and a sunken dining area features a custom fitted glass sky-light and handpainted, gilded wallpaper. Private dining rooms are accessed by a grand marble stair with a timber lattice railing in a double story foyer clad in stacked slate and bronze mirror panels.
Black marble granite flooring and zebrano wood wall panels set the mood for a rather serious affair with meat. This sophisticated and modern steakhouse is designed to feature an open kitchen viewable from any seat in the restaurant. The space features a unique and dramatic wall of three-dimensional white lacquered wood planks, a psychedelic tufted carpet reminiscent of either cowhide or militaryissue camouflage, and lacquer tub chairs fitted in fine black leather. A ceiling of circular recessed discs with over 100 pendants showers guests from above and 3,000 bottles carefully chosen for the wine wall intrigue and excite the hungry palettes. The design portrays the elegance and class of the resort.

Set in the North Devon countryside, Highbullen Hotel Golf and Country Club appointed Park Grove Design to re-invent the interiors to The Devon View restaurant. The brief was to re-instate character and interior personality into dated and unwelcoming dining spaces. A key aspect of the interior design was to address the lack of architectural detail and to break up large areas to create an intimate dining experience. It was essential that the interiors worked for morning breakfast as well as fine dining in the evening. As the name of the restaurant suggests, the dining room boasts stunning views across the landscapes of Exmoor and Dartmoor. The country estate context of the restaurant and the Arts and Crafts roots of the building inspired the colour palette and finishes. Earthy colours are given a contemporary twist when combined with vibrant teals and gold finishes. Custom designed joinery panels were installed to create elements of architectural interest, while existing narrow pillars were re-worked to create a sense of rhythm. Shallow ceiling coffers were formed on the vast low ceilings to break up and define the spaces. This zoning was reflected on the floor by custom-designed feature carpeting which directs the guests’ attention toward the magnificent view. The design and refurbishment creates destination dining and feeds into a sophisticated new identity for the hotel.
DESIGNWILKES set about to create a Chinese Restaurant that eschews the cliché. What the team have created is a space with an Asian aesthetic. The most Asian of flowers, the Orchid, provides the inspiration for this design. The orchid holds a greater sense of Asia in it grace & beauty. It is used in traditional Chinese herbal recipes, and in Guangzhou like many Asian cities; an Orchid garden provides a welcome respite from the stress of daily life. Simultaneously the team looked at the spectrum of colour. The scheme breaks into a variety of colours and return back to a singular “white” colour. Guided with this wavelength, they started the restaurant with the palette of creamy white linen and flax hued velvet. It is devoid of colour. The floor is polished heavy cream stone. A sensual sinuous pewter based table is the central focus covered with masses of gorgeous white orchids. The surrounding walls are dressed with silver mirror and off-white hand rubbed timber, upholstered in linen with small silver beads attached, their sparkle like the prism point of transformation. The room and the restaurant as a whole are simultaneously handsome with an elegant feminine streak. It is timeless in design, innovative, thought provoking and alive as it provides a backdrop for sumptuous cuisine.

The Balalaika is a 330 room Hotel and is in a prime location, within walking distance of many tourist and business locations. The Hotel prides itself on being one of the original hotels in South Africa, and while it nestles in the heart of Sandton its beautiful gardens and country atmosphere give it a comforting feeling of home away from home. Entering from the Main Reception Lobby, ones’ path is led most directly through to the terrace and the beautiful flourishing gardens so well tended to by the Hotel. In an effort to integrate the two spaces, interior and exterior, a more botanical feel was introduced within the lobby through fresh, uplifting colours of soft blues, various shades of green and patterned florals in both the fabrics and the custom-designed carpeting. The gardens remain one of the key attractions of the Hotel and when relaxing alongside the pool or on the outdoor terrace one is completely unaware that the busy hub of Sandton surrounds you. Whilst incorporating the garden feel, elegance and an up-market ambiance was essential and DIAD wanted to ensure that the style of “chic country” became part of the mix. A “punchy elegant wow factor” was achieved through the use of black combined with gold-leaf and yellow. In order to create a continuity throughout the Hotel, as was a top priority for both DIAD and the Balalaika, the same base colours were used in all areas where carpeting was replaced, with a couple of key colours changing in each area. This allowed for the development of an individual character for each different area emphasising different colour theming (for example the soft greens and blues in the Lobby), while establishing a holistic feel.
The aim of the recent renovation undertaken was to bring this Grand Lady of Rotterdam back to life and make her proud again. The scope was a full refurbishment of the building both inside and out and it was split into two phases: -Public Areas consisting of Ground & First Floors. -254 Guestroom & Suites over floors 3-10. The aim of the new design was to “break the mould” of the standard Hilton Hotel whilst retaining the high quality it’s guests have come to expect. Hilton commissioned internationally renowned hospitality Interior Designers RPW Design to bring the building into the 21st Century. Sources of inspiration which have given the hotel a strong and relevant design identity include the city’s architecture, its port – one of the world’s busiest, and the lace-making and artistic traditions of the Netherlands. “We looked at the colours, shapes, textures, and the scale and proportions of the environment and applied them to the interiors. The scale and pattern of the Flemish brickwork formed the basis of the design of a striking mirrored wall in the hotel’s new restaurant, while decorative lace features echo the surroundings and help to achieve a homely feel in the guestrooms” “We approached the design with a fresh eye, simplified the interiors and brought back the styling of post-war modernism to remind everyone about all the good things of that particularly optimistic period. While staying true to the architecture, our priority was to create an interior with comfort in mind and in line with today’s luxury expectations.”

An entire floor renovation with a Lobby Lounge in the Hyatt Regency Tokyo, Japan.
JOI-Design Interior Architects undertook the refurbishment and rebranding of the hotel’s public areas. The striking lobby forms a dynamic hub, lit by an elaborate lighting installation which makes an inviting refuge of this space with its carefully proportioned presence.
This renovation in the well-known Hyatt Regency Tokyo is located in the Shinjuku area. Shinjuku is central Tokyo where the Tokyo Metropolitan government office is located. Its design intention is to create a modern contemporary Japanese design to welcome international travellers. The design team commissioned two local artists to create large Japanese paintings and B&W brush paintings to complete the sophisticated space. The design works so well because it is an international design, full of Japanese/local flavours. The design aims to give guests a pleasant experience of travelling to Tokyo/Japan. The key aspect of the project is OMOTENASHI, the Japanese mind of hospitality.
In referencing the site’s former occupant, the Palais des Festivals, the design concept recalls a sophisticated era of glamour that imbued the spirit of luxury without excess. Clean lines of the building’s 1980s architecture are carried into the interior design. Here, deluxe elegance is expressed through high quality materials, finely crafted details and a sophisticated palette of greys, chocolate, black and ivory accented with warm gold and champagne tones. Material finishes are pure and luxurious. Entrance columns were transformed to emulate eye-catching “golden palms” with the port cochère suggesting a canopy of palm fronds. A “carpeted” staircase of grey marble inlaid with golden stone escorts guests into the hotel’s reception area. Inside, the lobby opens into an impressive five storeys in height with a spectacular light sculpture of delicate gold “leaves” cascading 20 metres into the centre of the space, surrounded by striking columns encased in pale marble and a mirrored ceiling reflecting horizontal rows of marble-clad balconies – all signifying a sanctuary to style and glamour. The design is more organic at ground level. An expansive polished pale marble floor is interspersed with seating areas defined by inlaid carpets with golden palm-frond patterns on a chocolate brown background; bronze “meridian lines” running through the marble and carpet flooring connects separate materials and spaces. Comfortably plush seating includes graceful wingback chairs and cosy club chairs and sofas; in addition a communal sofa skilfully defines spaces between the lobby and bar. Selectively chosen accessories complete the refined ambiance.

Sitting at the heart of one of the most historic cities on the East Coast, the renovation of this hotel provided a much needed facelift to a top hotel in the region and established a connection to the local flavour of the city.
Rottet Studio was commissioned by Loews Hotels and Resorts to renovate the Loews Regency Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
The design team reconfigured the lobby space, forming a symmetrical and balanced layout by moving the reception desk from a far corner to its new front-and-centre location across from the hotel entrance. Annapolis is long known for its nautical, especially sailing history. The design was intended to give the hotel a sense of regional place by bringing in the sailing history. Skipjacks were the most common sailing vessel on the Chesapeake Bay thus the mosaic tile mural behind the reception desk is a detail of a skipjack. Nauticalinspired elements create a sense of place. A monumental 27-foot Italian mosaic wall depicting an abstract view of the mast of a sailboat anchors the reception area. Natural hemp rope is elevated and stacked vertically to create the façades of the reception pods. They also feature in the lobby’s decorative screens, which were designed by a regional artist and speak to the rich history of the nearby naval academy. Dark grey and white marble stripes bring drama and add a chic look to the lobby flooring, with other colour inspiration coming from local materials such as the blue slate and black iron grills found in the colonial homes and store fronts surrounding the city. The relationship from the front door to the reception desk was changed from the original lobby to give immediate visual access from the entry. The desk was broken into small pods versus a continuous long desk to enhance guest experience. The design is routed in the local history of the Annapolis and now has a regional context.
The goal was to keep the hotel’s pleasant, happy vibe while adding a layer of sophistication reminiscent of classic New York. This was achieved through the use of special materials and design elements. The design is elegant and rich in texture and materials, but light in colour and attitude. A sense of Park Avenue glamour is echoed throughout the entirety of the hotel, from the high gloss Fluted Kinon and stone reception desk to the back painted glass and stainless vanity in the bathrooms. Signature features include the limestone and Tiger beige marble walls, the faceted wall behind the rich tortoise shell reception desk, and the custom-designed chandeliers suspended from the recessed ceiling. The entry and lobby were reconfigured with the desk in the center, better utilising the reception and back of house to create a living room/lounge feel where guests could gather, sit and read, or use their laptops. The design team created a custom wall behind the front desk, which is faceted and chromed for a reflective appearance. An artist was commissioned to create the back wall of the lobby lounge. The lobby elevator doors are clad in a decorative metal panel with an intricate pattern created by varying finish applications. Carpeting in the conference center is designed as a large scale pattern of wisps of smoke that extend through the corridors and into private conference rooms.

A spatial experimentation that involved a modern twist on classical design to create a vibrant and invigorating sensory experience. The Meydan Grandstand Royal Enclosure is designed for the exclusive use by the Royal Family of Dubai and for their international guests during the Dubai Horse Racing Season.
The New York Palace redesign honours the hotel’s classic and historical elements with a transitional modern edge.
The brief calls for a design that was out of this world that is grand yet elegant. And most importantly, it must be colourful and spectacular. The design was inspired by a Peacock and it’s Feathers. The spatial identity has to entrap and captivate the audience as well as to consume them. It also has serve as a conversational piece. An extremely difficult project with many intricate details and multifaceted design on various multi-level spaces. The main entrance lobby space with the bespoke designed chandelier above the finely detailed marble flooring featuring various precious marbles, her handcrafted glass columns and leather stitched paneling The reception lobby floor is designed intricately with various semi precious marbles and stones. The ceiling chandelier with her multilevel coloured crystal glass feather leaves are carry through the overall design intent.
Remaining true to the New York Palace’s classic aesthetic, the main Lobby was transformed into a brighter, more contemporary space by streamlining and redefining the existing architectural elements. Vibrant leather fabrics, blue lounge chairs and artwork add splashes of colour to the off-white envelope. A Diego Rivera-inspired mural wraps around the second floor crown moulding, telling the story of the Villard family, who owned a railroad and shipping enterprise during the industrialisation age when the Villard Mansion was built. References to New York’s harbor are depicted through ships and trains. A stone floor pattern inspired by an Italian Renaissance motif grounds the lobby level. Other highlights include a massive sparkling chandelier, comprised of hundreds of hand-blown glass spheres, that draws attention to the Lobby’s gold leaf ceiling and historic marble fireplace. The Lobby Lounge provides a relaxing respite from the hustle and bustle of New York City. The light reflected from the hand-wrought bronze sconces lining the lounge’s rich macassar ebony walls creates a warm and inviting atmosphere allowing for easy transitions from morning coffee to afternoon tea and cocktail service.
Clever use of various materials and attention to intricate details can be seen in the specially designed carving on the panels, the glass circular columns, and the fish scale walls, the hand tufted carpets and the leather patterned stitch wall panelling that are featured all through the various spaces.

Opened on July 1st 2013, the Elewana Collection is delighted to announce the introduction of its first bush camp in Kenya – Sand River Masai Mara. Located on the banks of a river from which it has taken its name, Sand River Masai Mara is located within the Masai Mara National Reserve, close to the Tanzanian border. Situated on a secluded and picturesque site, Sand River Masai Mara replicates the heyday of exclusive permanent tented camps of the late 1920’s. The interior fixtures and furnishings mirror this period perfectly, reminding all who visit of those countless Hollywood movies that have paid homage to a classic era of African adventure. Sand River Masai Mara is an ideal destination, at any time of the year, for those wishing to enjoy exceptional game-viewing. The National Reserve is best known for its large concentrations of big cats, such as leopard, cheetah and, of course, lion. Even the dramatic arrival of the Annual Migration merely adds to an already abundant resident wildlife that awaits discovery. Sand River Masai Mara comprises of 16-tented accommodations - including 1 family tent - each divided into two separate but adjoining campsites, with each area possessing its own designated dining and public areas, thereby creating an increased sense of exclusivity and privacy.
Blending Japanese design and Western architectural details, the new St. Regis Osaka embraces the rich heritage of the St. Regis brand. The brief was to create a hotel in keeping with Colonel John Jacob Astor IV’s vision for a new style of luxury with interiors that reflect the atmosphere of a luxurious private residence more than just a hotel. Evocative colours and lighting were used to play with the concept of moon and sun which runs throughout the hotel; the guests experience different ambiances as they experience the different spaces and levels of the hotel. The guest’s journey through the St. Regis Hotel begins with the moonlight setting of the entrance hall, which was created using a combination of silver leaf, alongside reflective surfaces. The dramatic combination of bronze and dark marble flooring with the crystal tree as the centre piece creates a real sense of arrival. Japanese timber screens adorn classically detailed stone portals leading through to the concierge and elevator hall. In keeping with the theme of Moon and Sun, on entering the lift at entrance level the lighting tone gently changes as the lift rises from the cool moonlight glow opening to a bright sunlight tone at the reception level above. Arriving at the spacious 12th floor Reception Hall guests enjoy a calming view over a private Japanese garden terrace positioned high above the city. The Reception and Lobby Lounge evoke the brightness and power of the Sun. Large-scale limestone tiles on the walls and floor reflect historic construction whilst high coffered ceilings and bespoke chandeliers create a gracious ambience enhanced further by original artwork pieces celebrating the sun theme.

Stora Hotellet, built by Umeå Seamen’s Mission in 1895, had a long and proud history as the centre of the town’s nightlife, celebrations and tourism. But by the late 2000s, the hotel was run-down and outdated, while Umeå itself, was thriving and had a crying need for more hotel rooms. Balticgruppen, the large property developing company which had just acquired the venerable hotel, did not want to build more ordinary hotel rooms, however – what was really needed, in their view, was a truly unique guest experience with an unmistakable sense of place. That guest experience starts with the lobby, the first impression that sets the tone for the entire stay. Stylt Trampoli knew that for this hotel to work, the lobby had to be something out of the ordinary.

A Rooftop Indian Speciality Restaurant, Level 12 at Double Tree By Hilton, Chinchwad, Pune.
Famous for offering best-in-class services to corporate, DoubleTree by Hilton offers an intimate and charming atmosphere, high-quality comfort and a melange of traditional and modern hospitality, The DoubleTree by Hilton Pune-Chinchwad is a full service hotel belonging to Hilton worldwide.
The key factor was to design an outlet, which will attract the local patrons as well. Architecturally, the team had designed the rooftop into split levels to accommodate a lap pool on the terrace and a fitness center at the lower level. These Levels detailed out from the architectural design at the rooftop were perfect to create an intimate and charming dining experience to the guests. With twinkling stars above and a splendid view of the city from the top, a concept emerged, less is more! Studio K-7 Designs, as principal Architects and designers, wanted this venue to have a ‘no frills’ effect and the idea was to exploit the levels, the central feature of the lap pool and the scenic view around to achieve an unforgettable dining experience. The Interior Designer appointed by the owners, Mr. Masafumi Sanada (M-Style, Japan) also agreed on the same note. Mr. Sanada designed a simple yet elegant lounge seating at the higher level with a bar counter as the central feature. The lower level was designed to have a normal dining set up with the overflow of pool water as a backdrop on one side and the areal view of the city on the other. The contrast of the falling water with the fire behind creates the most romantic effect for the place. Strategic positioning of lighting enhances the whole ambiance to create a perfect romantic venue.
Being the first international branded hotel which has come up in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the twin town city of Pune, India, site is located in an extremely characteristic and lively area, in the heart of Pune’s IT & industrial belt (MIDC). Major Clientele being corporates from the neighbouring IT and Industrial Hub, the owners wanted to create a chic bar where one can unwind after a day’s hectic work; a lounge where elite patrons from the neighbouring area can chill out with family or friends. Programically, the team designed a bar on the first floor of the hotel. The architectural character of the space emerged as a “Linear Bar”. With the nature of the space being linear, planning and division of spaces was the challenge. Position of the service core further imposed restriction on the position of the bar counter. The canopy of drop off area for the ground level acted as an extension of linear lounge and was to be used as an open-air lounge and smoking area. Black, browns and greys dominate the whole space with a throw of eclectic reds and stark whites. Display shelves are full of original artefacts as well as the finest malts from all over the world. The engaging play of light and shadow enliven the lounge experience while you flow from one section to another. It portrays the Oriental philosophy of The Absolute, Timeless Communication and The Real World combined together quite ingeniously offering a functional yet emotional and visual delight as well.

The Lounge Bar offers sophisticated cocktails in perhaps Tbilisi’s most sophisticated setting, with frescoes inside and an amazing view from the terrace. designLSM were commissioned to design the interiors for a disused 1930s building on Mtatsminda Hill, overlooking the city of Tbilisi in Georgia. The carefully restored building incorporates three restaurants, a bar, conference and banqueting facilities. The client’s vision was to create a destination venue to attract a broad range of visitors to this stunning location, accessible only by a restored funicular railway. Located in a much loved and carefully restored historic city landmark, the Funicular enjoys stunning views across the city. The building’s façades and many original features have been carefully preserved, while the interiors were rebuilt to the highest standards, with old and new sitting alongside each other throughout the interior. Following exploratory site visits to the now sadly dilapidated building, designLSM was very excited to be working on a concept that transformed two floors into two family friendly relaxed restaurants, a fine dining experience, bar, conference and banqueting facilities. This unique development has achieved the client’s ambition of becoming a destination venue, with the variety of dining and entertainment options, each with their own identity, attracting a broad range of visitors. Chela restaurant specialises in the highest quality meat dishes. The Funicular Restaurant offers classic Georgian dishes with a twist. Puri Guliani is a dream come true for lovers of pastries and breads, including every kind of Khachapuri.
GG & Grace International were appointed to develop a Unique & Iconic identity for the O Bar, located at the Fairmont Nile City Towers. The main intention was to transform the existing Cigar Lounge into an Impressively Gorgeous VIP Venue. When designing the O Bar, GG & Grace International decided to create a unique identity in line with the actual mood of the people in Egypt. The team created a story of “The Crazy Scientist” that in search for the perfect algorithm for a brighter future, tagged all walls and ceilings with mathematical algorithms and chemical formulas. This chaotic and colorful design reflects in a way the mind-set of the people and the alchemy created by the interaction of all elements in the bar: High-energy music, Love & Passion, Hip & Trendy people, Cocktails & Smoke, Party! With the team given only 20 days to conceptualise and build the new identity of the O Bar, they decided to strategically concentrate their efforts on 3 main interventions: Special Wallpapers, Eclectic Furniture & Unique Artworks. Most of the walls are covered with black wallpaper; this creates an amazing contrast with the colorful graffiti. In addition, all the walls have been tagged with white mathematical formulas and algorithms, giving the impression that the Crazy Scientist used all the walls as a blackboard. As most people have different opinions, visions and desires, each piece of furniture is different. Chairs, tables and lamps are all Unique and Iconic, so guests can choose their preference. The design is a reflection of the actual mood and spirit of the people in Egypt. It is energetic, chaotic, colourful, crazy, unique and new.

The Best of the Serengeti
Category: Bar/ Club/ Lounge Project Name: Pharmarium Bar Location: Stockholm, Sweden Interior Designer: Stylt Trampoli – Creative director: Erik Nissen Johansen Architect: Stylt Trampoli – Creative director: Erik Nissen Johansen Completion: June 2013
With the ‘Big Five’ and the annual migration being the constant highlights of any visit to the Serengeti, the introduction of Serengeti Pioneer Camp will help to sate the desires of even the most expectant of safari travelers.
Pharmarium is a cocktail bar located on the same spot where Sweden’s very first public pharmacy opened in 1575, dispensing beauty, healing and magic in the heart of Stockholm’s historic Old Town. Stortorget is at the centre of one of Sweden’s most popular tourist sights, the Old Town of Stockholm, and while the area attracts hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic international visitors, it is considered a really difficult location if you want to attract a loyal following of choosy locals. Whatever Stylt Trampoli did had to have the power to change the perception of the entire area. Another challenge that the team had to design around was that the building itself was a Grade II listed historic property, located smack in the middle of one of Sweden’s most valued historic city environments. This put some very strict limitations on what could be done to both the exterior and the interior of the building, conceptually as well as materially. While the opportunity to recreate a place that caters to the same basic wishes as the pharmacy did over 400 years ago, what Stylt Trampoli are truly proud of with this project is the way it has attracted the most desirable clientele of trend-aware Stockholmers, beautiful people, wary locals and picky hipsters back to an area previously considered tainted by tourism tack. The strength of the concept, and the quality of the interior, has created a thriving year round business and revitalised the area as a destination and an experience that attracts Stockholmers as well as tourists. Pharmarium both tells a story of its location, and helps to create and maintain that location as a destination.
The combination of both Serengeti Pioneer Camp and that of the award-winning Serengeti Migration Camp to the north, it will now be possible to cover over 90% of the Serengeti from both of these two camps, thus maximising the game-viewing opportunities, and increasing game-viewing time. (see The Serengeti, The Migration and Our Camps for more details). Serengeti Pioneer Camp will continue to exhibit the qualities that have become synonymous with an Elewana Collection lodge and camp: evocative room interiors, exemplary service standards, and exceptional game viewing opportunities.

An innovative destination bar and restaurant split over three floors, featuring a florist, wine shop and plenty of imaginative touches.
The Library Bar and Lounge sits off the main Lobby of the hotel overlooking the sea of Bengal.
The brief was to create an exciting and innovative bar and restaurant, which offers a unique experience and smoothly transforms from day to night. The 10,000 square foot interior was to be visually stimulating with a host of different areas for customers to explore each time they visit. Natural light floods the space, whilst wellconsidered lighting transforms it from the day to night. With palm wallpaper, retro copper and gold pendant lights and bountiful potted plants, the upper ground floor features a mix of high oak tables alongside low-slung comfy seating. Shelves adorn the walls showcasing products from a pop-up shop, whilst a butchers’ block table provides a space for masterclasses. Downstairs a statement wall has been created on the staircase using books as wallpaper. A mezzanine level features chestnut leather chairs, burnt orange fabrics, copper tables, pendant lighting and timber flooring, providing an intimate space to linger. Bespoke Anglepoise lamps and a freestanding bar with rusted panelling add to the warm and inviting atmosphere. The lower ground floor has been furnished with leather stools and zinc benches for social drinking and softer dining chairs for leisurely stays, while the open kitchen showcases everything from preparation to service. A statement bar with reclaimed terracotta flooring, wireframe fox head lighting and a clever booth area created from stacked books are interesting touches, which draw the eye. Tucked under the stair, a florist features a roll top bath filled with flowers, whilst a wine shop boasts a wall of bottles, with tasting tables.
The design team’s mission was to create a Bar that continued in the hotel group Library Bar tradition. It was to be opulent and palatial with a timeless elegance and youthful appeal, as the designers overlooked the sea Chennai is traditionally a very hot and humid climate so they chose a cool cobalt blue as a dominant colour theme. Mixed with a golden palette, back lit blue hand cast glass mixes with the blue mirror, glass and leather clad celing. It is moody, and dramatic. As Chennai is derived from the Tamil word face, a series of large painted faces greet you upon entry into the Library Bar.

FEI is a bar lounge in the first W hotel in Guangzhou, China. A large cubic space with 18m each side which floats in the façade and whose three sides are all glazing was given to the design team. They transformed the large cube into a bar lounge of three layers (1000sqm approx.) which is covered by soft organic lighting skin with constant and organic modification – as if it is an aurora. The team created two design concepts to transform the glass box into the bar. The first concept is to cover the massive architectural and structural glass opening with soft organic lighting skin which is new in the world. The skin of innumerable fiber optics controls colour and speed of flash, it sparkles with constant modification. Also, the team managed to light up the whole wall with minimal numbers of light sources by a highly minute method of mixing the fiber and finishing gut. It is low cost & high performance. The lighting sources are placed inside of the ceiling, so it is easy for maintenance. Even though the fiber is 18m long, the each fiber was scratched by hands to light up evenly. Also, in the daytime it becomes a delicate transparent screen and it softens the sun light. The second is to place multi-layers of horizontal floor and perpendicular wall in the space surrounded by light. The individual spaces separated into the multilayers create different ‘Ma’ (distances) with distinct density and taste, and welcome guests with various expressions.
Accessed via a broad staircase from the spectacular 32nd floor lobby of the Westin Hotel, Singapore, the gastro bar ‘Cook and Brew’ exudes an old-school gentleman’s club vibe, albeit with a modern thread of relaxed-luxe. Taking advantage of its elevated perch, the expansive space offers superb views through the floor to ceiling glass on two sides- with an outlook that encompasses the nearby coastline and city’s prestigious skyline. Taking its cue from perennially popular gastropubs, replete with warm timber paneling, a long black marbletopped bar, luxurious leather sofas and armchairs on unpolished handscrapped recycled wooden floors, the bar exhibits the relaxed ambience of atraditional pub in a contemporary iteration. In addition to the spacious main bar and lounge area, a separate dining section occupies the far corner of the floorspace, featuring a plush full length black leather tufted banquette combined with traditional timber dining chairs. The abundance of natural light offsets magnificent views rounding off the gastronomic experience with sensory delights. The bar is not just another hotel bar for in-house guests, but an enticing drinks and dining destination in its own right.

Layers of design elements, a warm palette & rich textures create an overall concept that truly captures the theme and cuisine.
The restaurant L’hotel de Ville from chef Benoit Violier was the object of a transformation based on a new concept which refers to awakening of the 5 senses.
This restaurant concept is a fashionable fusion of design & cuisine. With a cutting edge concept that gives a nod to the marine theme of the Atlantis Resort & Casino in which it is located, this stunning restaurant encapsulates guests from entry through dessert. A warm color palette and rich textures both create a comfortable and luxurious dining environment, while perfectly complimenting the exquisite menu. From the glowing onyx in the lounge to the canopy booths in the restaurant, the design elements throughout this space all strike a chord to be favorite aspects of this project. Through working with the entire team (owner, contractor, vendors), TANDEM were able to achieve a beautiful concept, and very cohesive design – as the philosophy at Tandem is: design is a product of minds working or occurring in conjunction with each other (IN TANDEM). It is this partnership of ideas from the client, the trades, the artisans and the designer that a creative vision is formed and realised.
The first architectural approach was to create the maximum available volume in this belle epoque house. This included enhancements to the ceilings to the periphery of the rooms including works to allow natural light to highlight the composition of the facade while revealing the quality of the interior volume. The feeling of space and openness is thus maximised. Different shades of brown amongst other colours were chosen and used throughout, from the stucco walls to internal finishes, bringing a feeling of comfort and a soft light. These natural colors are associated with chocolate brown which, for its part, will give this interior a chic and modern look. The wood used was elm which is an excellent wood to bring a natural feel to the finish. It brings a warmth and friendliness which allows guests to feel at home and relaxed. The furniture were especially imagined, designed and created to be subtle, serene and above al functional. The architects, designers and fabricators responded to the specific needs of the personal and exclusive service. The kitchen was enlarged by 48m2 to allow a new manner to works and control the different creations of the chefs. All fabricated in the highest quality brushed stainless steel with new technical installations.

A French restaurant in London’s historic Westminster district, Boulestin takes it’s name from X. Marcel Boulestin, the influential French chef. The team collaborated closely with proprietor Joel Kissin and his partners to create a restaurant and café inspired by X. Marcel Boulestin. He was author of several influential cook books, is reputed to be the world’s first TV chef and was the proprietor of the original Boulestin restaurant in Covent Garden. Located in the famous historic Westminster district, the restaurant and café serve a substantially French menu, researched by Joel from Boulestin’s books. DesignLSM’s interior design and architecture team sought to bring the story to life, designing an interior that re-imagines the original Boulestin restaurant, whilst retaining the character of the 17th century building on St James’s Street. The restaurant and Café Marcel are located on the ground floor which features the restaurant at the rear. Café Marcel at the front provides diners with a more relaxed and casual environment and the oak panelled private dining room in the basement accommodates up to 40 seated. The design team selected high quality materials and classic finishes which work with antique feature lighting sourced by Joel to create a refined ambience that X. Marcel Boulestin’s original celebrity clientèle would have felt at home in. Artwork was commissioned to emulate original paintings from the period and tie the scheme together, bringing out the inimitable character of the man himself.
A spectacularly warped piece of La Belle Epoque Paris in the heart of Gothenburg, straight from a time when the future was bright, science was our friend and the possibilities were endless. Le Pain Français is a successful chain of French-inspired cafés in Gothenburg, a city with a thriving café culture. When the owners acquired this fantastic four-story location smack in the middle of the main boulevard, they knew they had an opportunity to create the ultimate flagship for their chain – the bistro, bar and café they had been dreaming of. Their design brief to Stylt Trampoli was simple: Take it to the next level. La Librairie des Curiosites, the third-floor Gothic lounge, features glass cabinets filled with antique objets d’art, toys, books, natural history curiosities and much more, all carefully handpicked from the heaving tables of the legendary flea markets of Paris. With its purple velvet couches, glittering chandeliers and mysterious atmosphere, there is absolutely nowhere better to enjoy elaborate and elegant French pastries, macarons and mousses. The design works because the design team have done their homework before they started drawing, so that all aspects of the interior are based on the same story, the same concept. The design forms a coherent whole, which in turn contributes to an impressive guest experience that won’t be soon forgotten.

This is a hi end Indian restaurant with a new concept of open show cooking and with large robbatta grill sponsored by Chivas Regal. The Madhu’s restaurant is a long running traditional Indian restaurant in based Southall. The owner decided to create a new concept restaurant promoting healthy cooking with a new large open cooking area which includes a large robatta grill Tandoori oven and costume made cooking devises. Approached by the Owner, Nous Design took onboard the vision in order to design and procure this hi end luxury vision and turn it into reality. This restaurant has bespoke features such as the unique bar and private dining rooms sponsored by Chivas Regal, bespoke furniture such as the unique sizes of tables to enhance the guest’s luxury experience, and more intimate banquette seating area. The design is built around the guest experience and all the features and items are produced to take that experience to a new level.
The design for Nobu in Monaco was inspired by the incredible and almost uninterrupted views of the sea.
Photography: Ram Singh Studio
It is almost as if the restaurant is floating above the water. The colours are ever-changing. During the day, the pale blues of the sky are divided from the deeper blues of the sea by the line of the horizon. At night, the blackness is dotted with twinkling stars and the lights of passing boats. Martin Hulbert Design felt it important to make the most of this feature. The design team introduced large blue mirrors to bring the view inside and, by means of these reflections, make the space seem even bigger and lighter by day and richer by night. The colour scheme throughout utilises this same palette of blues. The line of the horizon is replicated in the mirror behind the bar. A sculpture of thousands of steel rods that hang from the ceiling in an abstract grid right through the restaurant was inspired by the coral reef that still lies in the water underneath. Given that this is Nobu, it is no accident that the finished work may also convey to diners the appearance of thousands of chopsticks. Guests enter Nobu via an enormous bar containing a pyramid structure on which bottles are arranged and up-lit. The restaurant itself is equally spacious. It includes two slightly more intimate dining areas screened by semitranslucent sheered curtains. All the furniture is bespoke; the tables were designed specifically for Nobu, with care taken to understand how they would best fit with the operation of the restaurant.

Aleenta Phuket is a multiple award-winning resort on a 20km deserted pristine beachfront, pioneering a laid back but sophisticated “barefoot luxury” concept for free spirited travellers. A key component was to establish the resort as a fine dining destination with a high-end gourmet outlet to be called The Edge and a roof top Chef’s Table experience as well as the creation of a long infinity pool. This spacious restaurant is an exquisite dining destination located just steps away from the lambent sands of pristine Natai Beach. It is here where Executive Chef Alex Bitterling and his kitchen team combined their epicurean passion and philosophies to provide diners and guests with an eclectic yet sumptuous collection of dishes that best typifies what a “Forward Thinking and Contemporary Cuisine” is all about. The design embraces AHMS Hotel’s key philosophies of Outdoor Living-IN, creating a space and environment for guests to relax in 5 star luxury while enjoying the natural pleasures of the location.
The Shilla Seoul, set amid 23 acres of private wooded parkland in the centre of the South Korean capital, is part of the Samsung empire. “In addition to having an astute business mind, the client also has exquisite taste and wanted everything to be the absolute best,” says Remedios, “The relentless pursuit of perfection that has made Samsung the world’s leading electronics company, is also evident in the attitude to The Shilla.”Remedios Studio was commissioned to oversee the redesign of the forty-year old flagship and landmark, a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World consortium. The hotel is synonymous with quality and great service and wanted to maintain this reputation while appealing to a younger demographic, and without losing its existing, loyal clientele. The client wanted the redesigned hotel to be sophisticated, but not trendy or edgy. Remedios’ solution, therefore, was to reinterpret traditional Korean values and create a refined, urbane hotel that was modern, but timeless. He likens The Shilla Seoul today to Hermes: contemporary, yet classic with traditional values. Following the success of The Library bar and lounge on Level 1, Remedios was asked to replicate the atmosphere in the hotel’s 243-sq-m (2,616-sq-ft) Executive Lounge on Level 23. For this exclusive space, Remedios has created more of a penthouse feel, using tinted mirror, bronze, leather and tactile fabrics such as velvet and boucle in a palette of greige, claret, tan and black. To best enjoy the breathtaking, panoramic views of Seoul and Namsan Mountain through the floor-to-ceiling windows, he has designed a series of living rooms around a central open fireplace, offering a sense of privacy to all. Surrounding the main living areas are four meetings rooms seating between eight and 14; a computer den; a library; a dining area; and a bar.

Submitted by: Studio K-7 Designs Category: Restaurant Project Name: Wah Marathi Location: Seasons Mall, Pune, India Interior Designer: Studio K-7 Designs Completion: September 2013 The décor was based on the concept of creating a sense of nostalgia in the local patrons’ minds subtly; without letting the cultural overtones completely overpower the space. The base for the styling was chosen to be contemporary; with certain elements lending the nostalgic touches – to create an overall delightful fine dining experience. With simplicity as the primary guiding factor, an earthy look was chosen and splashes of bold colors were introduced through various elements such as traditional local artifacts, displays and merchandise. An engaging play of light and shade – with a cleverly designed lighting pattern enhances the divine experience generated through organic components like wood and stones. The overall experience though quite emotive, showcases Indian/Maharashtrian culture and philosophy ingeniously; without compromising on the functional and visual factors. The restaurant does its bit towards the underprivileged sections of Maharashtrian society, by displaying and selling home made Indian spices. The most important design decision was to use Eco friendly, indigenous materials and traditional construction techniques. Exposed brick work with wire-cut bricks and creative use of brick-bonds is a highlight in the central portion of the restaurant. Two long walls separating the two sections are clad with horizontal strips of wastage from wooden planks, Plywood and raw wooden slices; in an attempt to recreate the effect of dry stone masonry and random stone masonry on the compound walls of Maharashtrian villages. The raw wooden logs cladding on the counter wall is symbolic representation of ancient stone masonry structure in rural India and particularly in Maharashtra. The flooring in leather-finished black local stone (Cudappah) is reminiscent of old Dravidian architecture.

A multiple award-winning resort on a 20km deserted pristine beachfront, pioneering a laid back but sophisticated “barefoot luxury” concept for free spirited travellers. Pioneering and multiple award-winning Aleenta Phuket-Phang Nga Resort was seven years old. The resort had aged well due to its highly developed maintenance programme supplemented by a sustainable approach to its original design that meant that its erosion as a high quality retreat escape for sophisticated travellers remained was minimal. What had changed though was that the resort had suffered as a result of its own popularity. The level of return guests was extraordinary but what had happened was that these guests had grown up and had families. So while they remained the free spirited thinkers that attracted them in the first place to Aleenta’s brand of off the beaten path, “barefoot luxury” secret beach escapes, they now had children in tow. So key to the brief was to create family facilities that would not be the standard offering – but that fitted with the spirit of the brand. So importantly there was a need for innovation in the Children’s Club as well as ensure there were a wide range of learning and fun activities that would engage the children. Not a computer game in site. The other key components were to establish the resort as a fine dining destination with a high-end gourmet outlet to be called The Edge and a roof top Chef’s Table experience as well as the creation of a long infinity pool. As the guests had grown up they had also become more sophisticated and lovers of fine food as well as more health conscious. The focal point of health was Ayurah Wellness Centre – that blended the famed and ancient holistic skills of local therapists with a medical component with treatments including oxygen therapy and anti-aging therapies. Additional renovation work at Aleenta will include new decking throughout and a new and expanded Galleria Aleenta, a yoga studio and gym with cross training equipment.
An Integrated Beach hotel blending perfectly into its lush tropical site of 120 hectares and offering a wide variety of accommodation types and amenities. The brief was to exploit to the maximum the unique features of the site which comprises of 2 distinct beaches separated on one side by a small mountain going down to sea and on the other side by flat land with huge areas of protected mangroves. The resort had to offer a unique experience to its guests by the careful planning of the wide variety of accommodation types and amenities while at the same time keeping the site unspoilt in its natural beauty. The use of natural materials (timber, stone, thatch, granite…) and water features was an important condition to achieve the desired result. The spectacular views offered by the site had to be exploited to a maximum in the laying out of the buildings. Privacy in an exclusive hotel being an important issue, had to be addressed carefully in the design process. The following amenities were agreed upon during the initial design process: 184 Junior suites with a Main building laid out in 4 clusters each with a large swimming pool all overlooking the south beach. A conference centre, Fitness centre and kid’s club were to be adjoining the main building. 12 no Beach villas, 12 no Family villas, 10 no Spa villas and 40 Senior suites were to be placed on the north beach part of the site together with 8 no Hillside villas and a Presidential villa on top. There would be 5 Restaurants and 6 common swimming pools in the resort. Finally a Spa village had to be located between the south and north beaches.

‘If you love nature, you will love Kilindi’.
A sophisticated luxury oceanfront boutique hotel with the essence of nature as inspiration. The spectacular sunsets and beautiful surrounding beaches were where the drawing board began for this luxurious boutique property on Poipu Beach. The Ko’a Kea is an oceanfront hotel & resort, with its name meaning “white coral” nature was the true inspiration for the design- from the colours, to the textures, to the shapes. The 121 guest-rooms are the modern beach getaway; with subtle & sleek furnishings and crisp, fresh colours and each with remarkable views creates a retreat unlike any other- or a “little taste of heaven” as it has been described.
Kilindi Zanzibar, comprising of a series of white-domed Pavilion guest rooms all set in 35 acres of lush tropical gardens, is a rarity in the world of luxury boutique hotels. Originally designed for Benny Andersson - one of the members of the 1970’s pop group ABBA Kilindi is a true blend of the very best of diverse cultures to be found in Tanzania and on its adjacent island of Zanzibar. Kilindi achieves the perfect marriage between Scandinavian minimalism and the dramatic architectural overtones of Middle Eastern heritage, whilst encouraging an open, ‘back-to-nature’ ambiance throughout. Kilindi’s ‘open-to-nature’ approach provides the true essence to any stay and crafts a private, intimate and ‘barefoot’ appeal that so many crave. If you love nature, you will adore Kilindi.
The marrying of the interior and exterior really brought these spaces to life. The fresh look of the rooms, while remaining subtle and modern, brought the beauty of Poipu Beach into each guest-room. Through working with the entire team (owner, contractor, vendors), we were able to achieve a beautiful concept, and very cohesive design – as our philosophy at Tandem is: design is a product of minds working or occurring in conjunction with each other (IN TANDEM). Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel is an award-winning 5-star family resort, located at the beach and in the middle of a natural park. The unique location and position, within a natural park, at the beach with stunning views over the port of Sagres, on Portugal’s unspoiled western Algarve coast, were the starting point for the project. The aspirations for Martinhal were for it to look like it had grown organically, hence the architects wanted to ‘touch the ground lightly’, draw attention to the land and capitalized on sea views. The solution was the creation of series of simple low-rise buildings (beachside cabins at the hotel are wrapped in natural timber) that have been crafted from local materials using modern construction techniques and geometric forms to reflect the local vernacular style and merge into the landscape of the resort’s pristine beach location and the national park. Also collaborating on the project were Lisbon based landscape architects Biodesign who are renowned for their ecologically sound practices. Their concept follows the principals of Conran & Partners - Recovering the landscape and coupling environmental awareness with functionality and aesthetics, particularly in relation to the coastal landscape system. Homes are integrated within the site, preserving as many of the natural areas as possible with the implementation of an indigenous planting programme. Inspired by the surrounding dramatic beauty of the unspoilt Western Algarve, Michael has created clean and bold designs for Martinhal that join modern sophistication with relaxed comfort. He sought to capture a sophisticated, low-key, intimate and artistic mood through the use of muted tones and local natural materials, such as cork, cane and stone, making the interiors elegant, modern and timeless, with comfort and quality as central themes.

This “one-of-a-kind” resort combines beach casualness with modern details using neutrals with accents of spanish moss, shell tones and corals. Sonesta Hilton Head Resort is a modern coastal interpretation of the South Carolina Lowcountry and Hilton Head Island, combining the casualness of the local architecture and textures of the landscape with streamlined architectural details. The five-story concrete building was a full renovation of the Public Space Areas and Model Room, 340 Guestrooms, Guest Baths, Guest Corridors, four Hospitality Suites, five Suites, Public Restrooms, renovation of the Ballroom, 20,000 square feet of Meeting Rooms and the Pre-function areas. The neutral overall spacial envelope includes fresh colour tones of white, sand, sea grass, warm grays of Spanish moss, shell tones and inspiring pops of coral. Words that help describe the feel of the spaces are: casual elegant charm, natural, weathered coastal landscaping of low shrubs, marsh grasses, palm trees, shells, elements such as birds, and sea grass. The inspiration was to take common things from the surroundings, give them a contemporary edge, and use them in unexpected ways. For instance, the lamps are made of driftwood and much of the porcelain tile is inspired by the wood planks of the board walk. Guests enjoy friendly southern hospitality, breathe in fresh sea air, see lots of beautiful sunsets and relax. This is a place to have a reunion, a wedding, a conference, a family vacation; a place to eat fresh seafood and local vegetables. This is a beach hotel that people will want to return to, where the relaxed elegance that the guests desire pairs beautifully with inspiration from the location.

The design team used a more sophisticated tone on tone palette for the Golf hotel with a ‘younger’ selection of colours for the Capo Nord hotel as this is a family hotel. Golf hotel is formed by 22 suites on a single floor level, divided in two wings. The plan is organic and follows the shape of the land. The suites are hexagonal in shape, therefore this shape was used as a design reference. The inspiration was simply the lagoon colours of light blues and greens. The leaves motif is inspired by a typical water plant of the area. Some of the lamps are inspired by the fishing activity on the river Po. The design team used eco products, such as taps, paints, leed certified tiles. The key aspect of the project was the freedom to work with contemporary material and design collections creating discreet and comfortable interiors. The design works especially well as it reflects the island’s amazing atmosphere and colours. Photographer: Beppe Raso

Club house is a renovation project of an entire floor in a sky scraper.
Unique accommodation surrounded by nature.
12 kinds of facilities were planned to entertain and comfort guests, including a bar lounge with American pool table, a library and a bedroom. Simultaneously these needed to achieve both fine quality and originality. The design team’s given space was 60m x 22m, a massive but long and narrow floor plan. A core back yard was structurally located in the center of the floor, which created a long and narrow space, with the long hallway separating the floor into two different sections. A.N.D. / Nomura Co.Ltd began the project by zoning 12 facilities. They planned similar facilities nearby, making a clear separation between private and public areas, and recreated the narrow corridor as an inter-sectional space. White and dark brown were used for the ceiling and unique materials were specified for the wall to bring out a dynamic space within the limited ceiling height. Since the original interior design was plain, introducing eyecatching and hand-crafted materials was very effective to renew the impression. A variety of unique materials were chosen such as the hexagon tiles with Chinese tea pot texture, a layered leather door and Uzukuri walls; Japanese traditional wood-grain finished walls. Despite the fact that this is a Chinese project, precise details and high quality finish were requested just as Japanese craftsmen usually deal with. Some materials were eventually made in Japan for technical reasons, however all other productions were realised in China throughout continuous meetings with Chinese craftsmen for sample makings and design supervision.
A spacious residence divided in two floors. On the ground floor the living room has a cosy fireplace to share a drink and some special moments together, seats and sofa’s, luxury bathroom with own private sauna. A tree is growing in the middle going up to the second floor. The branches of the tree will hold the “nest” where the bed is placed. The jacuzzi situated on this floor also. Lying on the bed or while enjoying a relaxing bath in the jacuzzi you can overlook the unspoiled nature all around you. The residence sits comfortably in a special place high up on the Iso Syöte hilltop (432m) with a splendid 360 degrees free view to all directions. Walls and even the roof are made of glass. At any time there is the connection with nature, a free view over surrounding hills and forest and into the sky. A unique chance to admire the midnight sun in summer or a million stars and the dance of the Northernlights in the sky in winter. Even when you are lying in bed or relaxing in your private jacuzzi you will be able to be impressed by the nature on offer.

Phase one of Las Verandas was opened in March 2013 with six luxurious villas, the Palapa Bar and two guest pools. Phase two will include five more villas, 30 rooms and suites and Las Pergolas, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant.
The Hotel residence sports a mix of mid-century modern and contemporary style.
Las Verandas is just off the Caribbean coast of Honduras on the island of Roatan. The hotel and Villas provide accommodation for the discerning guest who is accustomed to world class water activities and golfing. The exterior features of white plaster and mahogany trim are repeated indoors with travertine floors and a colour scheme inspired by local weavers. Island white is a dominant textile as seen in all tropical environments; accents in brilliant hues of hibiscus reds, purple, and yellows are used throughout the property. The dĂŠcor is a reflection of the lush island surroundings. Las Verandas captures the essence of Roatan with its deep blue skies, white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, and sunset views.
The owners travel from China to New York often and wished for a place to stay that felt more like home. This private suite at The Lombardy Hotel was remodeled and redesigned to fit their design taste but also appeal to other potential guests renting the suite. It was important to the clients that the space be comfortable, practical and durable but also beautiful. With that list, Burgos focused her energy on creating a harmonious layout with the practical functionality that was pleasing on the eyes. The overall colour palette is composed of soft neutrals from the natural wool area rug and beige walls in the living room to the satin white wall tiles and linear stone beige floor tiles in the bathroom. Pops of colour are introduced throughout the space through fine art photography, colourful custom made soft furnishings, such as the window treatments and pillows and glassware accents. Generating custom soft furnishings was very important to creating the cozy home-like feel. The design offers everyday functionality in a relaxed and appealing environment, which is exactly what travelers require.

Submitted by: ADR s.r.o Category: Hotel Residence Project Name: Velaa Private Island Maldives Location: Noonu Atoll, Republic of Maldives Interior Designer: ADR s.r.o., Mimolimit s.r.o. Architect: ADR s.r.o. – Petr Kolar, Ales Lapka Completion: 2013 Velaa Private Island lies in the Indian Ocean waters off the shore of the Maldives, north of the capital Male. Guests can take their pick of 48 villas of various sizes and layouts situated right on the beach or overlooking the lagoon. The island offers a bonanza of social and sports activities, including several restaurants. The brief was to design a private island which will stand apart from the common hotel resorts in the area. ADR were not to develop a regular hotel, albeit with all the luxury and amenities one could think of – they were to create a place for select clientele, to come by invitation only, and spend ‘Private Moments’- whether these be culinary delights, sports, or moments of relaxation, or just doing nothing at all. All that wrapped up in perfect service. All guest villas have sufficient privacy and adequate private beach space; each villa has its own pool and access road. The architecture for the island, through its design and the experiences it offers is truly unique in the Maldives context. The design, architecture, interiors, materials and accessories chosen serve the purpose of instilling peace, relaxation and privacy, ensuring guests feel they are in the Maldives and not in a ‘city hotel’. The design used largely traditional materials and technologies, tastefully and functionally supplemented with modern elements. ADR were careful to strike a balance between privacy and a ‘feast for the eyes’ through humble, yet meticulously executed architecture combining tradition with modernity and surprises with familiarity. ADR also sought to minimise the negative footprint of the resort operation on the environment by promoting the restoration and development of the natural resources on the island and its surroundings, especially under water.

Submitted by: Chitwa Chitwa Category: Hotel Design Award - Africa Originally a private family bush retreat, Chitwa Chitwa has been operating as a safari lodge for the last 20 years. It has undergone a complete re-structuring in 2009 and was launched as a luxury safari destination. The idea in the re-construction was once again based on space. Chitwa Chitwa now has one of the most spacious common areas and probably among the biggest viewing decks in our industry. From a decor perspective, the opportunity was taken to expand and emphasise an aspect which has always distinguished to Chitwa and that was to break away from the typical bush/safari/common colonial styles to a more global style which infuses contemporary pieces, contemporary art and photographic prints with a discerning colonial touch.

Zilwa Attitude is not only an encounter with the Mauritian people but also an experience of the Mauritian art de vivre by the sea, Zilwa Attitude is sharing simple and genuine moments and going back to basics. Built on 15 acres of land, protected from the trade winds, Zilwa Attitude offers a breathtaking view on the 5 islands of the northern coast. The hotel boasts 4 beaches and two small and private islands. The hotel pays tribute to the national heritage: Mauritian writers, painters, architects and craftsmen. The 214 rooms have been customised and designed to meet the needs and expectations of each guest; in each category the rooms have their own identity and personality. They also pay tribute to the national heritage. Written on the walls are ‘sirandanes’, Creole riddles. They are fun, poetic and full of wisdom. The paintings are inspired by the Mauritian writer and painter, Macolm de Chazal. Guests are able to discover his major works, among which are the simple and almost real, colourful boats painted with gouache. The cushions are a reminder of his poetry, with themes taken from the sky and sea- an invitation to faraway lands. All of these elements remind us of the cultural heritage of the island and give the rooms a strong Mauritian identity.

El Secreto is a barefoot luxury couple oriented resort. An idyllic place for Honeymooners, Wedding Anniversaries, Proposals or Special Family Reunion Getaways.
For a luxury boutique hotel like this side, the selection of materials and FF&Es are of great importance to dictate how the guests would touch and feel the space. The hotel is comprised of a rich a palette of materials and finish to create a distinct icon in the heart of Washington.

This new 18-story boutique hotel consisting of 249 keys is located at the corner of Park Avenue South and 29th Street.
A hotel tower “like no other.” Modern-yet-warm, comfortable and upscale, this hotel tower is a need breed of design in the hotel category.
The hotel’s base consists of honed and polished dark granite framing sections of three-story glass curtain wall. Above the third floor, the facades are bronze coloured metal panels and floor-to-ceiling windows. The corner of the building features a 150-foot tall glass column containing colour changing light emitting diodes. While the materials are contemporary, the colour of the façade blends with its neighbours during the daytime. At night, the corner glass column brings a touch of color and excitement to the neighborhood. The lobby of the hotel is a dramatic three-story space with a herringbone black and white granite floor, oversized plum coloured chandeliers and fireplace, and Venetian plaster walls. The ground floor also consists of a 10,000 sf glassfronted restaurant, bar, and retail space. The third floor houses 3,500 sf of pre-function and ballroom spaces, as well as a spa, fitness room, sauna, and hair salon. The typical hotel floors have generously proportioned guestrooms and corner suites, many with balconies, four-post beds, comfortable seating and work areas, with pops of color such as the fuchsia drapery. The guestroom spa-like bathrooms include glass tile walls, a trough sink, and separate glass enclosed shower and soaking tub. The hotel’s duplexed Presidential Suite includes a two-story high living room with glass curtain wall, a covered outdoor terrace overlooking Park Avenue, a master bedroom suite on the upper level, and the flexibility to connect to two additional bedrooms from the main living space.
The design of the Platinum Tower at the Hard Rock Biloxi in a simple phrase? “Like no other.” The unique concept for these guest rooms was to be unlike any other “typical” guestroom. The spectacular views were what the design was centred around, so we turned the “typical” room 90 degrees and created a space with views along the entire room. The modern-yet-warm, masculine-withsoft-touches mix is really what elevates the design, giving that “Hard Rock edge” while creating a comfortable and upscale atmosphere for the guest to enjoy their stay. Luxurious finishes, contemporary pieces, and avant-garde art make this tower a fresh & exciting addition to the Gulf, and to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi.

Rottet Studio was commissioned by Loews Hotels and Resorts to renovate the Loews Regency Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The goal was to keep the hotel’s pleasant, happy vibe while adding a layer of sophistication reminiscent of classic New York. The Grand Suites are inspired by a singular cultural icon, Marilyn Monroe, with a New York perspective of her influence on style and pop culture from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Suite 1620, also known as The Glamour Suite, is an interpretation of what might have been Marilyn’s Park Avenue pied a terre and how we imagine she lived at the heyday of her celebrity glamour in New York City. Influenced by the flowing lines and soft, indirectly-lit planes of Streamline Moderne, the living room features a continuous cove light ceiling and a Wenge-clad wall behind the 55” Electric Mirror TV that flows down into a waterfall-edge entertainment cabinet below. The custom carpets are an updated take on the neat, tailored lines of tufted upholstery and the chic, leopard print couture of the era. In the bedroom, a pink leather, diamond-tufted headboard softly glows at the edges and throughout the suite there are touches of polished nickel, wood, silver, Lucite, leather, softly-colored velvets, marble, and lacquer. The Loews Regency had many different room types within the hotel and each one required intense individual attention in order to best renovate it and optimise the look and feel for the guest.
The ancient Cloister of the nuns of the order of St. Claire has been converted into an icon of the city of Cartagena and a reference within the country within luxury hospitality, ever since it was selected as one of the 10 legendary hotels of the Sofitel hotel chain on a global level. Originally built as a convent in 1621, the Sofitel Santa Clara is a legendary landmark in the heart of Cartagena’s walled city. Transformed into a luxury hotel in 1995, the Sofitel Santa Clara, unique in style, combines the allure of history with local hospitality and the art of French savoir-faire. Mixing Colonial and Republicanstyle architecture with modern comfort, the hotel features gourmet cuisine, exceptional service, a world-class spa, meeting facilities and state of the art technology for events, conventions and weddings. The hotel boasts 123 beautiful guestrooms, 19 of which are suites. Distributed along a Colonial and Republican wing, the stylist guestrooms overlook the Old Town, the Caribbean Sea as well as the hotel’s poolside and interior courtyards. The Colonial suites, tastefully renovated and located in the 17th century Colonial wing, combine historical charm with modern comfort with views to Cartagena´s walled city and are fully equipped.

Category: Hotel Design Award - North & South America Project Name: The Omni Nashville Hotel Location: Nashville, TN Architect: HKS Interior Designer: Looney & Associates Completion: 2013
The Parisian loft apartment-inspired rooms are a package of modern sophistication tied with a vintage bow. Unique details, custom furnishings, wood flooring and whimsical art create these exceptional & distinctive rooms.
The Omni Nashville Hotel is a 793,789 square-foot, 800-key urban hotel featuring 3 restaurants, spa, roof-deck pool, 125,000 squarefoot of convention space and 760-car, below-grade parking garage.
The hotel rooms and suites are reminiscent of Parisian loft apartment with distressed wood flooring and furnishings with vintage luggage motifs. Lighting recalls the French provincial styling with the use of exposed Edison light bulbs or classical opulent crystal chandeliers. Black and white mosaic tiled shower walls act as the canvas for miscellaneous English-French phrases providing a whimsical element. The artwork throughout adds a playful and quirky twist to the overall design. The Parlour & Boulevard Suites evoke feelings of nostalgia of times past. With weathered wood plank flooring throughout and antiqued furnishings, these suites embody “vintage” comfort and luxury. Unique furniture, all custom pieces, lend themselves to the rustic splendour guests enjoy in these spaces – with rich textures and hues of cream and mocha with accents of deep turquoise throughout. These vintage inspired suites have steampunk attitude combined with luxuriousness fit for a king...or queen. Upon entering the Gallery Suite, the senses are greeted from all angles. Above, a glimmering crystal chandelier, ahead, an ornate wall mirror reflecting beauty back at the entering guest; to one side- a beautiful bar glowing from within, and to the other- a plush bed with luxury linens, a beautifully tufted velvet headboard and deep, rich drapery as the backdrop.
The design captures the distinct culture and character of Nashville and its music-centric culture, respecting the past while creating a modern expression. To embody the raw and honest character of the city, the design incorporates natural and regional materials and exposed steel. The 21-story vertical tower serves as a beacon and landmark to the Music City Convention District. HKS incorporated energized streetscapes, designed with a strong sense of human scale, to provide an extension of pedestrian characteristics found in the nearby Entertainment District. The hotel is fully integrated with a 200,000 square-foot expansion of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on three levels. An internal pedestrian pathway provides a seamless connection from the hotel to the Country Music Hall of Fame expansion; situated along the pathway are Nashville-inspired restaurants and retail spaces. The project takes its cues from the city’s urban fabric by incorporating grand sidewalks, native landscaping, vintage lighting and pedestrian-oriented building façades. This hotel strongly reflects its time and place, conceived in a responsible urban manner to engage, interact, extend and enhance the existing public realm.

The architecture and design of the project is integrated with nature; it combines indoor and outdoor spaces by means of a structure with monumental porticoes in conjunction with intimate micro spaces. The guest can enjoy both the close proximity of nature and a comfortable homey feel. The number of positive remarks made by the hotel guests just confirms the success of every step taken as far as interior design and architecture are concerned. Designing for big brands is a challenge, since you have to respect standards while seeking differentiation. Westin Lagunamar’s design is functional and contemporary, showing many traditional Mexican elements, from which DPA draws on. The Mexican style, expressed in textures, colours, and local artisan ceramics meets DPA studio’s long established experience in designing international hotels without losing sight of the culture of each region. Starting with converting some original cacao storage sheds into lodges the brief was to retain the authenticity and evolve a group of lodges retaining the character of the original. The lodges were to be set around a contemporary structure housing a fine dining restaurant, bar and infinity pool overlooking the world heritage site of the famous Pitons. The design uses simple elements made by local craftsmen together with wood and stone from the plantation. The result is a simple and relaxed feel but with an international quality cuisine environment. The key aspects of the project are the simple slatted wood screen theme, the pool, and the blending of the structures into the plantation. The design works well because it has a chilled Zen like atmosphere. It is contemporary and not typical of the area.

A modern interpretation of Bali local building culture; a boutique resort to enjoy quality relaxation in a stylish environment surrounded by natural beauty. Alaya Ubud was designed exclusively by Grounds Kent Architects (GKA), an award-winning company. Different kinds of indigenous materials have been used both structurally and aesthetically resulting in a concept that is attuned to the surrounding environment. There is also a playful use of bamboo throughout the entire property along with innovative examples of island-inspired artistry. DaLa Spa and Petani restaurant at Alaya Ubud have been expertly styled by Moroccan-born interior decorator Zohra Boukhari. The landscape at Alaya Ubud is the work of Made Wijaya, Bali’s very own authority on tropical gardens. He has executed a simple design with random plantings of native Balinese flora together with artistic outdoor elements. It is a concept that does not detract from the gentle beauty of the neighbouring rice terrace. There is no outer fence to hinder the views of this natural setting. Guests can experience the wonders of nature as the adjacent field changes from a rich shade of green to gold with each passing season. Alaya Ubud reflects Bali’s artistic nuance and at the same time meets international needs.
The resort was designed with obvious sensitivity towards the surrounding environment and pays respect to Bali’s rich culture, fine artistry and Hindu heritage. With the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto, an understanding of local culture was all the more important for designers Remedios Studio, as their brief was to capture the cultural aesthetic of Kyoto and 1000 years of artistic tradition in a contemporary setting. Kyoto was the ancient, imperial capital of Japan and is oft dubbed “the Florence of Japan”, due to its rich cultural heritage. Home to 17 Unesco World Heritage sites, Kyoto is deeply rooted in its ancient culture and Kyotians are wary of foreigners attempting to interpret their history. Throughout the urban resort, Remedios pays homage to the traditions of Kyoto and Japan, both structurally and decoratively. As guests transition through the lobby, a series of vistas are framed, creating a sense of theatre and discovery. Eventually, the vignettes lead to the reception area, furnished with low, rectilinear furniture for more of a resort feel, as well as the nearby haute pâtisserie Pierre Herme. Inspiration for the spa came from karesansui dry-rock gardens, reflected in the use of natural materials throughout, looking as if they have been gradually weathered by nature. This has created a type of Proscenium arch, which frames the vista outside and also creates a cocooned stage. A matchstick blind, emulating Japanese sudare screens also helps frame the view. Wood flooring and detailing is light in colour, as one would find in Japanese homes. Sliding doors lead to a classically inspired wet room and dressing area.
The Philippine’s premier integrated destination casino resort, Solaire exceeds expectations and provides guests with truly world-class style, luxury and comfort. Hotel guests are quick to note that this is how a billion-dollar property should look and feel. Towering foliage greets patrons at the lobby’s entrance and ushers guests toward Czech-crafted lightscapes that make crystal seem lighter than air. Italian marble halls mark the journey toward the reception area, while a series of Matthew James high-gloss abstracts provide a tasteful diversion for the quick check-in process. Echoing inspirations both tropical and colonial, this integrated resort creates a look that is at once familiar to its locals and inspiring to its foreigners. Mother-of-pearl inlaid posts, hardwood beams, trademark lattice lintels, blown-glass and steel dividers, and botanical-printed carpets that echo the country’s national flower all serve to create a glimpse of the country’s finest.

This is a Guest Room Area Renovation project located in front of Kyoto station, Japan. Since Kyoto has been the capital of Japanese culture for more than a thousand years, the design team tried to create a sense of arrival for tourists in the hope that guests could indulge themselves and enjoy the local culture of the old town. The design works so well because it is a marriage of traditional Japanese design with international comfort. The key aspect of the project is ‘OMOTENASHI’, Japanese mind of hospitality.
With a view firmly to the future, the newly unveiled rooms and suites at The Peninsula Hong Kong strengthen a design proposition that redefines the hotel as the city’s newest luxury property, while embracing its unparalleled heritage. In the distinctive, two-bedroomed Marco Polo Suite, a return to colonial-style classicism sets the tone. Elegant, muted dove grey, wood-panelled walls paint a scene of understated opulence. Elaborate cornicing, Chinoiserie-inspired, fin-de-siècle furnishings, and luxurious, embroidered antique silk panels lend decorative flair, set against standout views of Victoria Harbour from the expansive living and dining room. The magnificent en suite bathrooms feature the hallmarks of monochromatic art deco style, with marble inlays, high ceilings and luxurious flourishes. This 206 square metre (2,289 square foot) suite, which commands views from the Cultural Centre to Hong Kong Island, stands alone in its stylistic homage to The Peninsula’s inimitable heritage. Presiding over the hotel’s newly enhanced rooms, The Peninsula Suite on the 26th floor lends itself to a study in architectural harmony, featuring interiors that meld restrained minimalism with pristine elegance and refinement. On entering the suite, a fluid wooden sculpture by Chinese artist Sun Yi welcomes the visitor, as the room opens up to reveal an impressive living and dining area with soaring ceilings adorned by a hand-blown Lasvit Bohemian glass chandelier, artfully suspended as if in flight. An enduring feature of The Peninsula Suite is its own private balcony, affording spellbinding, unimpaired views of Victoria Harbour.

This project is the renovation of an old Western-style hotel located in the heart of Japanese traditional gardens, rebirthed into a contemporary Japanese-style hotel. Shinagawa is a busy city known as the doorway of Tokyo from the Edo period and still remains the same. The design concept was ‘cross & weave’ which was inspired by the prosperous city of Shinagawa where people come and go, and cultures interchange. Over 200 cherry blossoms (called ‘sakura’ in Japanese) are planted in the Japanese garden. The design team’s aim was to create a contemporary hotel using a traditional Japanese method to suit the Japanese gardens. In the centre of the hotel lobby, there is an art wall which is covered by woven steel plates in a traditional Japanese pattern, creating a relaxing feeling for guests. With a dynamic cut-out in the art wall, seasonal flowers are hanged from the top and water overflows from a curved stone basin underneath. For the restaurant, the bar counter was located in the centre, surrounded by table seats divided by a partition wall which represents a grid of Japanese Fusuma door and Tatami flooring. The hallway and restaurant are divided gently by a string curtain which was dyed to look like a Japanese black and white drawing. The unique Japanese space configuration, horizontal and vertical grid line was utilised for the Guestroom design, and then Japanese traditional colours were added to brighten the space. An artwork of bedhead is made with a combination of Nishijin brocade and wooden members produced by craftsmen in Kyoto.
The Ritz Carlton Tianjin is a unique environment that has become a landmark destination for travellers worldwide. The design for The Ritz Carlton Tianjin takes the historic British Concession area in Tianjin as the starting point for its inspiration. Reminiscent of a bygone era, the hotel’s authentic English Neoclassical interiors reflect the port city’s dual heritage, blending a classical European aesthetic with authentic Chinese architectural and decorative elements. The public areas emphasise the fundamental principles of English Neoclassical style: balance, symmetry and proportion. Elements of chinoiserie and a sophisticated decorative arts program distinguish the Ritz-Carlton from other hotels in Tianjin. The lobby, a brilliantly detailed double-height space, has oversized Corinthian columns and a monumental grand staircase to either side. A bespoke Italian bronze chandelier hangs in the centre of the space. The hotel’s 277 guestrooms including 53 suites represent a modern interpretation of an English Neoclassical mansion bedroom. Individual libraries, lacquered mahogany furniture, marble bathrooms and geometric carpet patterns all contribute to the residential feel of the hotel, which simultaneously accommodates all state-of-theart technological necessities, offering guests the highest level of comfort. The Presidential Suite, richly detailed and expansive, feels much like a private luxury apartment. This suite features faux marble columns, oak parquet floors, sumptuous fabrics, a canopy bed, bathroom niche, and an office area with mahogany walls.

Velaa Private Island lies in the Indian Ocean waters off the shore of the Maldives, north of the capital Male. Guests can take their pick of 48 villas of various sizes and layouts situated right on the beach or overlooking the lagoon.
Located downtown in Singapore’s prestigious financial district, situated on the beautiful Marina Bay, Westin Singapore Features 305 Guestrooms and Suites, 4 F&B Outlets and the Westin Heavenly Spa.
Inspired by nature, the design concept reflects the brand design standards in a modern setting. Streamlined décor featuring materials that are textural interpretations of landscape imagery sets an elegant and stylish tone for the whole hotel. The guest’s first experience is the dramatic ground floor drop off lobby with its triple height space infused with subtle (tone on tone) contemporary flower motif appearing to float above the Concierge desk. The Guest is greeted to a palette of harmonious nature inspired colours throughout the hotel. The lobby, meeting rooms, ballroom, corridors and guestrooms are of rich yet neutral colours. We have ebony and rosewood against colours with grey casts, the look is luxurious yet not inconspicuous. In contrast, we have the Daily Treats, Guest Dining Hall and the Westin Heavenly Spa, wherein the palettes are very light, calming and natural. These are the public spaces where the guests are nurtured and inspired. One the project’s key aspects has to be the hotel main lobby at level 32. With breathtaking views of the city this is a first of its kind in Singapore and is destined to set design standards for sky lobbies. At Level 3, the guest is gently introduced to the Pre-function and Ballroom areas. Whilst still encouraging a relaxed feeling, these areas exude a rich environment of dark timber, striking marbles, intricate mirror detailing and giant contemporary chandeliers. The white multi faceted archways as you arrive on level 3 are designed to create an ‘anti’ space before entering the Pre-Function proper.

Reconfiguration of 91 guestrooms to 82. 10 special themed suites, a roof top terrace, cooking school and spa were added. The design direction was to restore and improve this iconic property without losing the existing atmosphere. The key count was reduced to create 5-fixture bathrooms and to add a variety of suites. All new MEP systems, state of the art waterproofing system of the foundations to prevent aqua alta, hi tech and BOH upgrades to modernize a 500 year old building. Interiors respect the history of the Gritti and the city of Venice. They pay tribute to the numerous famous patrons and celebrities that continue to frequent the hotel. A new roof top terrace commands panoramic views of Venice while a new Spa is operated by Aqua di Parma. The historic Gritti Cooking School was revived. All FF&E was designed custom for the Gritti and produced in the Veneto by Italian craftsmen. We did a thorough restoration and upgrading of the property without losing the romance and ambience of the old Gritti that was its charm. The design work respects the history of the building and Venice all while offering guest various design experiences because of the numerous suites. This was a very special and exceptional project that was immensely complex. There were extreme factors starting with working in Venice to respecting the historic fabric of a 500 year old building with a celebrated history all while bring it into the 21st century.

Having created a luxury 21st Century country house at Coworth Park, the Dorchester Collection required a unique eco luxury spa. The spa emerges as a sculptural form from the natural landscape, blurring the edges between built and natural form. Facilities are arranged on two levels: a lower level with pool and gym, and an upper entry level containing the changing rooms, treatment rooms, lounges and café.
This project is the transformation of a 70’s building into the most up-to-date expression of the Crowne Plaza brand. The challenge was to take the dated hotel interior within the architectural shell of a 70’s Belgrade landmark building, transforming it into a relevant and current expression of the Crowne Plaza brand. The 416-room hotel also needed to reassert its position as a meeting place for Belgrade high society. Generous concrete and glass architectural spaces had to be celebrated, but also infused with warmth to create a welcoming atmosphere in line with guests’ expectations. The interior had to achieve the perfect equilibrium between character and timelessness. The solution was an injection of character through the contrast of iconic furniture and 70’s art with bold contemporary flourishes. The design of the social meeting areas e.g. bars and restaurants evoke both individuality and comfort. Through the introduction of bespoke furniture, rooms and suites acquired an intimacy evocative of an exclusive boutique hotel. The project blurs the boundaries between boutique and business; successfully embracing the immense scale of the building, whilst also creating a comfortable residential environment.

L’Apogée Courchevel is the latest masterpiece in the Oetker Collection, recreating the finest European hospitality for which it is renowned. The forest location is pretty and views are simply stellar. Relax by the open fire or on the terrace in Le Comptoir de L’Apogée, come in from the slopes to the resident lounge and warm yourself with hot chocolate. L’Apogée Courchevel offers stylish good living at its effortless best.

Hotel Design Award - Europe
Submitted by: Stylt Trampoli Category: Hotel Design Award - Europe Project Name: Stora Hotellet Umeå Location: Umeå, Sweden Interior Designer: Stylt Trampoli – Creative director: Erik Nissen Johansen Architect: Stylt Trampoli – Creative director: Erik Nissen Johansen Completion: February 2014 A grand hotel with a saltwater-stained past, where the seafaring heritage of the town is made visible in a unique experience in a unique place. The project is located in the port town of Umeå, northern Sweden, hard by the Baltic Sea and at the end (and the beginning) of thousands of seafaring routes.
