THE INTERNATIONAL YACHT & AVIATION AWARDS 2013 So here we are already in our third year of The International Yacht & Aviation Awards and I am proud to say a year that has undoubtedly produced some of the world’s finest projects not just in super yacht design, but also sailing yachts and aviation. Last year we asked what you, as professionals in the industry, wanted from an Awards Ceremony; everything from the categories you would like to see, to the location of the awards. In fairness, the vote was divided between London and Miami as a venue for the awards, with London just creeping ahead as the favourite - hence our decision to hold the ceremony once again right here. At your request we have introduced additional power yacht categories and, for the first time, awards for sailing yachts too. However the most extensive growth this year has come from the requests for an increasing number of awards in the aviation sector. Last year, as you will remember, we launched slowly into this sector with just one private plane category; this year there are 6 awards in total for private jets, commercial aviation, aviation lounges and concept categories too. For us this is an exciting development, we will, for 2014, continue to listen to you and as publishers and award hosts to work for and with you to celebrate the best in yacht and aviation design on a global scale. I do hope you enjoy seeing the 2013 short listed project, they will of course be profiled in future issues of design et al and Luxe et al in much more detail. The client was looking for a modern, sleek look, along with some very unique features.
Tango is an exceptionally creative and innovative yacht in terms of both the exterior profile and the interior styling and layout.
Combined with a full width owners suite, MY Vicky boasts a fixed balcony amidships; a distinctive H2 design feature.
The yacht has a contemporary twotone exterior. Her muscular looks are combined with signature lines that bring additional elegance to the profile.
The combination of large soft curves combined with sharp creases creates a shape definition more reminiscent of car styling. These curves wrap over the balcony and flow aft . The strong black and white graphics of the profile and uninterrupted window lines are part of the sleek Italian design language that appealed to the client.
The brief was to ensure maximum volume within the available dimensions. The enormous interior space is quite remarkable, and was made possible because of the inside / outside enclosed area on the main deck aft. www.feadship.nl
www.h2yachtdesign.com
20 The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2013
The client’s brief was very clear; ‘create the most impressive yacht of its type’. A huge challenge when we consider the many stunning and impressive yachts in this 80-90m size range. MY Nirvana had to be extremely functional and aesthetically impressive. Her superstructure is restrained in a functional sense, creating a mature, robust form that evokes strength. Her swept back funnels and wings contribute to create a sleek silhouette that complements the curvaceous and distinctive hull lines. www.samsorgiovannidesigns.com

Musashi boasts a long aft deck for two large tenders and a style completely different from other yachts.
Lyana is a sixty meter vessel with an attractive profile, emphasized by her blue hull and white superstructure colour scheme.
Project description: The exterior styling of Palladium was to be like no other. The goal was to produce a timeless design; non-confrontational, yet elegant and revolutionary. The styling also had to encompass a functional interior with plenty of natural light. The flowing lines have been carefully styled; the main styling feature is the upper deck balconies and atrium. The balconies overhang the vessel to eliminate encroachment into the interior. The interior showcases minimalistic walls, ceilings and floors covered in earthy materials. The furniture was styled to emulate the exterior of the yacht, with flowing yet functional lines. www.michaelleachdesign.com
The brief was to create a smaller but aesthetically more elegant sister yacht of the owner’s current yacht. Musashi was to provide the ultimate experience of light and spaciousness for the owner and guests. The yacht provides both light as well as sufficient privacy for the guests onboard. Her many curved windows are truly something to behold.
Lyana’s design represents a symbiosis between the exterior and the interior, characterized by colour play and chiaroscuro. Macassar ebony was chosen for the décor of the stunning main salon (flooring, furniture and the lower part of the bulkheads), while Anigrè is used in contrast for the upper part of the bulkheads.

The accommodation for up to 12 guests is formed by 4 cabins located on the lower deck, a split level VIP suite come 2nd Owners suite at the front of the main deck and the master Owners suite forward on the upper deck, both with a 180° sea view.
Clean and long lines give Lady Britt a timeless yet modern profile.
She has a maximum speed of 16 knots and an oceanic range of 4,800 nautical miles at 12 knots.
Designed for an experienced owner, the yacht had to cater for his large family and friends. The owner was very involved in the project, visiting the yard on many occasions. With an impressive six guest cabins on the lower deck, it fulfills this requirement and provides ample space for guests.
The sumptuous classic interior uses fine Italian marble, onyx, Madrona burl wood, gold leaf, mother of pearl and Marieux crystal – achieving maximum visual impact.
Of particular note is the incredible sauna on board, which boasts direct access to the sea.

This elegant, timeless yacht is at the same time aesthetically enticing and highly functional.
The interiors are clean but at the same time luxurious thanks to the selection of materials and tone-on-tone textures. The floor showcases walnut parquet and limestone while the ceilings are dressed in white leather. This is offset beautifully by the American walnut furniture and walls. Careful study of lighting design, together with a lot of natural light conveyed by large windows, plays a key role in creating an incredibly comfortable and pleasing atmosphere. www.admiraltecnomar.com

As well as being extended in overall length to include a large swim platform and a new bespoke galley, she also boasts a beautiful new sun deck entertaining area - providing the ultimate in glamorous relaxation. The re-design works so well because it provides two totally new entertaining and relaxation areas that enable the owner’s family and friends to enjoy and maximise their time onboard together.
Arianna is the largest 50 meter composite motor yacht at a gross tonnage of 822. Delta was able to take advantage of advanced computer analysis to fine tune the structure on a very specific basis. This allowed Arianna to have both a greater accommodation volume and more capacity for stores but with no more weight and draft than other yachts her length. The owner of Arianna stressed the importance of the yacht being personal and intimate - like a home to his family, guests and the crew.

Axantha II’s aluminium hull and superstructures give her a moderate displacement which, combined with a reasonably sized engine, allow her to reach a speed of 14.8 knots. A consumption of only 110 litres at 11.5 knots offers 6795 miles autonomy.
Mangusta 165 is the fastest composite Maxi Open yacht ever to be built. She showcases a perfect balance of shape, pure lines and a sporty profile enclosed in an elegant, white hull.
The ship, which amounts to no less than 340 square meters of interior arrangements, can comfortably accommodate eleven guests and eight crew members. The interior layouts are made in stained cherry wood while the floors, in either teak or douka, are accented by a wenge edge. Great care was paid to sound and vibration insulation; the sound levels measured in various zones attest to an extremely quiet boat. www.jfa-yachts.com
30 The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2013
The interior design is modern, featuring lines that are sharp and clean without being minimal. Thanks to the decorative wealth of the bleached teak of the cladding and furnishings, the style is contemporary and unique. The yacht can reach a top speed of 38 knots without compromising anything in terms of space, luxury, quality, absence of noise and vibrations and stable sailing. www.overmarine.it

A cruising yacht capable of worldwide voyages for extended periods, sensitive yet powerful under sail and designed to deliver absolute comfort at sea.
The world’s largest carbon fibre sloop by Wally defines sporty luxury at its best.
She is the first sailing yacht of her size to have an almost vertical bow. This feature allows for a greater waterline length, thus making for a considerable improvement in speed both under sail and engine power. Inside, she is extremely comfortable. The sides of the superstructure are transparent, bringing the outside into the saloon. The perfect integration of deck saloon and cockpit create a seamless living area 30m long.
The yacht takes the Wally concept for outdoor living and a clean, exciting design style to the next level - by adding mega yacht luxury and comfort levels. The uncluttered space on board creates a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Streamlined interiors are without excessive ornament or accessories. The first of the new WallyCento class. It is exceptionally rare to find a yacht that is both an exciting and competitive raceboat, and one that can be used for comfortable bluewater cruising.
The classic sheer, bow and stern overhang are proportionate to Simba’s size. A moderate freeboard, classically styled deckhouses, cockpit and skylights together create a timeless atmosphere both outside and inside.
The interior meets the requirements of the Wally box rule. This included the stipulation that the interior make up at least 54% of the overall volume of the hull, with a large master stateroom with en-suite, two guest cabins again with en-suite and a crew cabin with en-suite/day head.
The interior layout shows a full beam aft owners cabin, three guest cabins, a lower saloon, social main deckhouse as well as an aft deckhouse. The crew accommodation is completely separated with double crew cabins, crew mess, galley and a crew deck exit.
On deck, Hamilton achieves the owner’s demand for a sleek, thoroughbred exterior with a guest cockpit separate from the sail handling area.
The yacht is designed with a high righting moment as a performance oriented sloop and will participate in Spirit of Tradition Races.

The guideline was to develop an interior that would be luxurious, sophisticated and modern, without being formal.
The client initially wanted to develop a traditional, European style interior. However, with time this changed to a much more controlled, muted, timeless look - achieved with the mix of some traditional carpentry and modern furniture.
The distinctive materials used throughout reveal their beauty upon touch, through the tactile nature of their textures. Over time these materials will develop a rich patina, bringing out the depth of their natural beauty even more.
The final arrangement is undeniably unique for a 70m yacht. The huge spa area on lower deck and the full width amidships owners’ suite behind the bridge are of particular note.
The unexpected combination of the highest quality materials on subtle surfaces, combined with the smooth and sophisticated lines of Smeralda has resulted in the ultimate expression of a lifestyle instilled with timeless beauty.
Similarly, the double height atrium on the main salon is unique within a yacht of this size, adding to the ‘wow factor’ requested by the owner.

The ER175 features three full decks plus the fly bridge, all elegantly incorporated within the aerodynamic superstructure.
Exposé needed to become a hybrid of an explorer and a luxury yacht, incorporating all the amenities associated with an explorer vessel alongside the luxuries of a cruising vessel.
ICON ER175 Submitted by: Ivan Erdevicki Naval Architecture & Yacht Design Inc. Overall length: 53.4m / 175ft
The exceptional 175 ft hull and superstructure are one harmonious, integrated structure with the design focused towards the boat’s efficiency, sea worthiness and overall reliability both for high speed dynamic stability and comfort at sea. The yacht is under 500 GRT and designed to be built as semidisplacement hull and superstructure in aluminium alloy with 31 plus knots speed and the Transatlantic range at cruising speed. www.ivanerdevicki.com
The result is a cutting edge design for a 120+ meter vessel with all possible luxuries for the owner, along with a large enough volume to house tenders, a submarine and helicopters; equipment generally associated with explorer vessels. Central to the whole design was the vessel’s large volume, vast spaces and open plan layout - allowing for interesting spatial relationships and generous living / entertainment areas. www.iconyachts.eu / www.impossibleproductions-ink.com

Project description: There are two primary variations within the design of the RMK 5000 Explorer: the True Luxury Explorer and the Leisure, both of which have a great deal of flexibility to suit both individual client requirements and the tastes of the current market. Designed with modern lines and soft curves there is a smooth, uncluttered look and feel to the design. The full displacement hulls on both designs provide long range cruising thanks to the diesel/electric propulsion package under 500 GT thresholds. Both projects accommodate up to 10 guests and 8 crew, plus the Captain.
Iwana represents a fresh thinking and truly innovative approach to the styling of a 87m superyacht. In order to extend and maximise deck space aft, the hull opens into two fold down, roll out, and wrap around bathing platforms. The platform incorporates part of the aft hull window turning into a partial glass bottomed floor allowing for the observation of underwater marine life and habitats. www.mcdiarmid-design.com

Project description: The idea behind the concept was to emphasise the superb space that catamarans offer, thanks to their large beam, and to arrange this space in a style more commonly associated with motoryachts. Consequently, the design boasts one huge main deck spanning the entire beam and housing dining and lounging areas in both the exterior aft deck and inside the saloon, together creating a seamless, open space (522m2 in total).
ML Power 85’ is a fast cruising catamaran that combines a modern design, excellent performances (maximum speed 27 knots Superior) and a large autonomy at low speed (700 NM at 15 knots, 1000 NM 11 N). The large deck area, cockpit and fly bridge skirts amount to a total surface area of 175 m2. The exterior design is simple, modern and innovative with various integrated elements (flush hatches, integrated windlass) and a number of refined details and materials.
Extended storage space within the Beach Club on the aft will easily accommodate a tender for 9, diving equipment for 8 and 4 sea bobs. Combined with the spa pool on the flybridge, this boat is all about comfort and fun.
Hull and superstructure construction is planned to utilise a high tech composite sandwich infusion process, using glass and carbon reinforcement.

A cruising yacht capable of worldwide voyages for extended periods, sensitive yet powerful under sail and designed to deliver absolute comfort at sea.
