Looking forward to the annual Monaco Yacht Show 2015 we have this month, taken a closer look at who and what will be there in terms of yachts, designers and indeed their innovative concepts. With so much change on a global level, so many challenges from all perspectives not least technological, this is an exciting time in design terms. Our aim moving forward is to bring you the best in design terms from both the world of yacht and aviation design. We cannot or will not attempt to look at technology in great detail, as a title that concentrates on design, this is really where our strengths lie From a design perspective I see the world of both super yacht and private jet design

currently as diverse in part and dare I say it I little unremarkable in part. It is time I feel to promote, expose and celebrate great style , schemes that heighten the senses and offer inspiration to all. Do I sound arrogant or opinionated saying this? I hope not, I speak to designers who are frustrated by their clients limitations and are striving to create exciting design schemes in a somewhat safe market place. I feel it is our job in the role of design publishers for both the yacht and aviation industry to promote good design, that pushes boundaries, limitations and excites both the mind and the senses. You can look forward to an exciting year ahead .. Until next month Joanne

Award-winning designers Raymond Langton and team have once again impressed the industry with their latest collaboration. Heesen Yachts' M/Y Ann G debuted earlier this season to abundant admiration from observers and critics. Whilst the yacht's own architecture and build is true to Heesen's excellence and uncomprimised standards, the bold interiors chosen by Langton and his team create a wonderfully unique and memorable ambiance. A striking first impression for those stepping on board is created by the bespoke Art Deco style chandelier extending over two decks that is framed by the open-tread stairs. The main salon is a perfect area for entertaining guests with an intimate seating area adjoining the bar of Macassar and backlit onyx. The room also includes an elegant dining area with an extending Macassar dining table featuring an inlaid art panel and a feature artwork by Based Upon on the forward bulkhead.

10 Luxe Et Al

The guest accommodation continues the contemporary Art Deco theme, with Macassar, stainless steel, leather and parchment, and a unique palette of artworks and fabrics distinguishing each of the four guest cabins. The owner's suite, located forward on the main deck, features a private office, large full-beam bedroom and bathroom flanked by his and hers changing rooms. The bedroom is accented with artistic touches such as fabric artwork, and intricate deco motif inlaid into the foot of the bed, and geometric stone mosaic artwork in the bathroom. On the bridge deck, the sky lounge is a more informal, intimate atmosphere with the Macassar architecture of the room contrasted by parchment wall panels and opulent fabrics, framed with windows on three sides filling the room with natural light and offering

panoramic views of the seascapes beyond.

ensures Ann G is a striking and entirely unique vessel.

When discussing this bespoke design project Jason Macaree, of Reymond Langton discussed the process, 'The client came to us with a strong vision and high expectations; we proposed a design based on his brief of a bold, modern interpretation of Art Deco style. Characterised by rich Macassar, accented with stainless steel details, the design instils a luxurious, refined atmosphere, with warming touches of backlit white onyx, soft tactile leather and bespoke fabric artworks.' Macaree said.

The yacht is not without contemporary influence however as the lower deck beach club is designed as a multi-purpose space dedicated to relaxation, with space for gym equipment, steam room, bar and seating area. The main woods in this area are elm panelling and teak flooring to create a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

Despite the somewhat brave selection of tones, textures and materials for this design the overall effect is one of expensive elegance as opposed to being brassy or gauche. The design works well to create a rich ambience, inspired by world travel and a passion for fine style. The use of dramatic tones and multi-layered textures

Ann G is an entirely unforgettable motor-yacht. A perfect example of a vessel that exudes the strong individuality of her owner while keeping the family feeling that characterises all yachts delivered by Heesen. Powerful and aggressive in styling she also exudes extremely refined design elements and the exterior lines that have been beautifully and perfectly crafted by Heesen in house expert aluminium welders. Ann G is guaranteed to be one of the most talked about aspects of Monaco this season. www.heesenyachts.com

The Monaco Yacht show is one of the most prestigious events in the industry's calendar, alongside The International Yacht and Aviation Awards. Just as certain events and locations are intrinsically synonymous with the Yacht business, there are a select few names which are consistently associated with the industry. When such names collaborate on a project, the result instantly commands attention. Designed by the famous Tim Heywood for her exteriors and with interiors by the increasingly successful Laura Sessa, Event is the very first hull of Amels 199 Limited Series vessel. A particularly promising project, Event is the result of a long and successful collaboration between Imperial and the renowned Amels shipyard, built with winning-awards projects and strong partnership. Furthermore the dual-design team of Heywood and Sessa ensures Event lives up to her name and is a substantial showpiece. This 60-metre super yacht boasts, as main feature, an incredible scimitar bow which gives her a incomparable behavior while cruising. Imperial's team managed and implemented in her entire construction process whilst being entrusted as the owner’s representative, at his request. The yacht's build was supervised during every stage by Imperial's expert teams and their efforts were rewarded when the yacht won a World Superyacht Award last year. Her roaring layout includes a touch-and-go helipad on the bow, a unique beach club leisure deck with sauna or a custom LIMO tender similar as the vessel with a scimitar bow too, also designed by Tim Heywood. As a special feature, her circle windows enhance the natural light on board. Laura Sessa created a bespoke interior design for Event's 6 staterooms, full-beam Owner suite, and the entertainment spaces. Event comprises accommodation for 13 guests and 17 crew members. The overall ambiance of the interior design is an incredible and warm atmosphere with rare amenities designed by most of the major handcraft suppliers in the world. Event is testament to the great minds, intelligent insight, excellence of experience and substantial style of the talented teams which brought her to life. In this case, Monaco is the event but Event is the star. www.imperial-yachts.com

The Ultimate Showpiece Imagine by Fraser Yachts

30 Luxe Et Al

Luxe Et Al 31

Imagine is already well known to the esteemed hierarchy of the industry. The ground-breaking yacht cut an imposing figure on the scene thanks her substantial size of 65M and the design collaborations with two industry heavyweights, Tim Heywood and Andrew Winch who informed the exterior and interior aspects respectively. Her generous proportions do not negate her grace upon the water and her contemporary, cult status does not compromise the traditionally refined brilliance of her craft. Imagine’s status as the ultimate show-piece and entertainment venue was cemented with a luminous debut season spent hosting parties for the elite social set during the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival. A deliberately designed party yacht with the substance and sensibility of a private, privileged setting.

Imagine has a displacement hull with a longitudinal skeg in the aft sections. The hull is equipped with a Voith inline bow thruster, driven by a 180-kW electric motor, and a Quantum Marine stabilisation system operational both at sea and at anchor, configured as two pairs of lateral fins positioned in the central sections, with an electro-hydraulically controlled drive system. Imagine’s engine room contains two Caterpillar V16 CAT 3516C TTA C – HD rating turbodiesel engines, each with a total cylinder capacity of 78.00 litres, equivalent to 4,765 cubic inches, and maximum power of 2,682 BHP. Her performance rating is equally impressive, with a top speed of 17 knots and can maintain a cruising speed of 15 knots, while at the economy cruising speed of 13 knots, the yacht has a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

The sleek lines of the exterior design and the palatial volumes of the interior styling make this yacht one of the industry’s most imposing and infamous. The crucial aspect of her enviable reputation however is that she delivers on every level; from style to substance, functionality to fun, durability to design; size and significance. It is this depth of character that truly defines the excellence of Imagine, the jewel in the already glittering crown of premier yachting firm Fraser Yachts.

With such significant mechanical prowess it is incredible to consider that the aesthetic aspects of Imagine are as imposing. The ultra-modern and sleek exterior design draws the eye on account of the muted monotone motif of the grey hull and high-gloss white of the superstructure. This colour-scheme expertly marries contemporary chic and timeless elegance. It is clear the informed intelligence of the Tim Heywood design team has been executed with excellence across Imagine’s superior exterior.

Comprising 7 luxury staterooms, an expansive sun-deck complete with spainspired facilities and a range of on and off-board entertainment available, Imagine lives up to her name by inspiring all manner of idealised pursuits. Imagine, in essence, encapsulates the most desired elements of luxury yacht ownership.

In keeping with Heywood’s trademark artisan approach to architecture, Imagine is gifted grand, swathing lines, a sculpted shape and graceful curves befitting of her feminine epithet. The external design is determinedly athletic but the strong, robust nature of the shape is complimented by the gentle beauty of the design’s overall impression.

The largest vessel to be built by Dutch shipyard Amels, Imagine quite literally pushed the limits of imagination within the industry. Furthermore Amels are worthy of extended praise at having articulated such aspirant architectural ambitions into a remarkable reality.

In contrast, the interior aspect of Imagine utilises a more classic styling than the contemporary nature of the exterior suggests. A stately, noble ambience informs Imagine’s interior, with fine, traditionalistic furnishings maintaining an impressively refined elegance.

The new mega motor yacht is built from high-resistance steel for the hull and light aluminium alloy for the superstructure. Equipped with the finest and most substantial of the industry’s machinery and instruments, Imagine is as impressive in the engine room as she is on-board.

The overall effect is one of confident calm. The interior design is entirely understated safe in the knowledge that the statuesque nature of the vessel speaks for itself. Renowned designer Andrew Winch was commissioned with overseeing the internal aspect of the Imagine project.

Winch is admired across the yacht design business for his creativity and keen understanding of the demands of the design brief. In this instance, his association with Imagine has produced a truly striking style story. Muted matte bronze tones, soft, honeyed marble and gentle wood grains combine to create an atmosphere of authority without aggression. The inclusion of bespoke materials and refined, worthy textures such as refined granite and rare stones ensure the design is suitable for the yacht’s robust size but warm enough to make a welcoming impression. The overall ambience is one of astute abundance and sophisticated indulgence, without ever being impractical, over styled or unauthentic. Aside from the large and spacious saloons and hotel-suite sized VIP staterooms Imagine also features a deeply unique beachclub style sundeck. The generous bathing platfom enjoys maximum sun exposure whilst the considered layout of the loungers and cushions is influenced by the style of a luxurious private beach. Additionally, Imagine features several key details which further set her apart from any yacht which came before. A stunning and futuristic glass-walled lift enjoys a central location at the heart of the yacht, connecting all four decks as a fun but functional show-piece. The aforementioned sun-deck comprises an entire entertainment and leisure complex including a spa pool, separate pool with swim-up bar, sauna and fully equipped gym. Imagine is a world apart from her rivals and continues to excel and impress without challenge. Having more in common with a commercial cruise ship than traditional superyacht; Imagine has reset the standard for the industry. To have achieved such an imposing yet understated design across the exterior and internal aspects is testament to the skill and synergy between the collaborating design teams and this yacht is definitely one of Fraser Yachts’ finest acquisitions. Imagine is a truly exceptional creation in both concept and reality; a future legend enjoying her time in the spotlight. www.fraseryachts.com

With interior design from the Genoa-based Garroni Design, the PRESTIGE 750 is born of the same values that constitute the DNA of PRESTIGE: a passion for innovation and a timeless design. Award Winner at the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015, Garroni Design competed with the PRESTIGE 750 for the Power Yacht up to 25 metres Award and Interior Design Award – Power Yacht. The flagship of the PRESTIGE motor yachts, the P750 was built at the Monte Carlo Yachts Shipyayd – Bénéteau Group, in Monfalcone, and at just under 23-metres has been conceptualised for fuller enjoyment of life at sea, with exceptional exterior living spaces, from the extra-large swim platform to the spacious cockpit and generously sized flybridge. The layout affords privacy as well as safety and ease of movement on board.

“ The PRESTIGE 750 is as elegant as an Italian, seaworthy as a French sailor, and more liveable than any other boat in its category. ”

Renowned Italian naval designers, Vittorio and Camillo Garroni, have combined their talents with J&J Slovenian naval architects and the Prestige Yachts technical office to create a truly exceptional motor yacht. The PRESTIGE 750 is as elegant as an Italian, seaworthy as a French sailor, and more liveable than any other boat in its category. When compared with another boat of equal size, the Prestige is bigger. The master bedroom is unrivalled in size in comparison to yachts in her category. The master features a lounger, desk, walk-in wardrobe, large shower and a double-wide single sink. The salon provides room for 8 people on luxurious sofas, which also big enough to host a small party of friends for late night drinks. Up on the flybridge is the perfect area for outdoor entertaining. A large settee and table allows the owner and friends to enjoy a barbecue under the soft-touch retractable sunroof. At the bow, enjoying the sun is a must, with forward facing seating for six people and a sun pad for ultimate relaxation. Created by an international team, the PRESTIGE 750 fulfils expectations of a much

larger yacht. Conceived by a collaborative effort from French engineers, Italian designers, American and Swedish engine manufacturers, and an American naval architect, the 750 is created by the most talented individuals amongst their fields. They worked together in a continual quest for quality. New and powerful innovations from the automotive industry allow for a dependable and high-performance experience. This quest for the best talents, skills and tools, wherever they may be found, encourages openness and innovation, and continually improves performance. Established over 20 years ago, the Prestige range of motor yachts immediately found its audience. Passionate and demanding, Prestige owners sought to realise their lifelong dreams aboard an exceptional, refined motor yacht that was built to last. The brand’s success was founded on a few simple concepts: all living spaces on one level, 360° panoramic views, an independent owner’s suite. By combining these concepts in just the right way, the art of Prestige was conceived. Garroni Design, established in 1971 by Vittorio Garroni, Ph.D. Architect, has produced a variety of marine projects, as well as mansions, corporate offices, hotels and restoration of historical palaces. Vastly experienced and highly respected within the yachting industry, Prof. Vittorio Garroni, has taught design, engineering and naval architecture. He also founded the Yacht Design School of La Spezia at Genoa University. On receiving the award Vittorio Garroni commented ‘A splendid evening in Venice; a city I adore. My mother was Venetian and Grandfather taught me secret hints about this splendid city. I was enthusiastic about being shortlisted for the Awards, getting the opportunity to revisit my beloved city, whilst meeting an extraordinary editorial organization and spending an evening at the stunning Cipriani. Winning my award with one of my latest designs was the highlight.’

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms?

son and his studio partners are experiencing the same. A wonderful life!

There are many design trends, in relation to the market they are targeting, the social position of customers and to its cultural roots. Generally speaking, Euro/American and Japanese cultures move from simplicity (minimalism) towards a more structured peaceful refinement. Arabs and Chinese, which never met with minimalism, remain on locally inspired decorative trends.

How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2015 and beyond. Garroni Design is an Italian design team and, even though participated by multinational team members and associates (from Europe to Middle and Far East) its cultural basis remain typically Italian, shared by the renaissance heritage, the unique environment and a deep knowledge on contemporary opportunities. So, our five themes are: style, refinement, culture, environment and technology.

The IY&A Awards is rapidly growing in the specialised environment, both for customers and professional. Interesting to monitor. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? Going on with my exciting work while sailing my boat, alone with my wife, in the wonderful Med seas. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself… The car you drive? Any rental car, all over the world; unfortunately it’s difficult to find a nice Ferrari.

And key trends that we should be aware of?

Your favourite place to travel to in the world?

Respect and appreciation of cultural diversity.

After visiting all the most renowned resorts, mainly for work, I am recently experiencing the extreme North and South, interesting destinations for my beloved clients.

What projects are you currently working on? Garroni Design expertise ranges from the ship design to yachts, frequently digressing in automotive and architectural planning, mainly for mansions and resorts. Garroni Team is currently designing for a number of motor yachts, an over 100’ deep sea sailing yacht, cruise vessels in the horizon, recreational vehicles and the refit of an historical renaissance palace, which is also the company’s seat.

Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? I attended the Cala di Volpe, Costa Smeralda, from the very beginning, in the 60s, and still frequently mooring in the bay, facing the pier. The place that gives you the most energy?

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

My office, as we are continuously discussing the new deals.

Simplicity and efficiency, with style.

And the place that enables you to totally relax?

A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life?

My boat, with my wife and dogs.

Sharing diversities is the typical designer’s work. Diversities in his proper lifestyle and working environment is natural for a designer. I spent 40 years sharing my life between university teaching in Europe, but not only, and working in the world, mainly in the Far East. It keeps you young! Now my

The Award winning ENTOURAGE is a 47m tri-deck motor yacht custom launched by Admiral (The Italian Sea Group) in 2014. The interior design came from the boards of Canadian based Dragana Maznic, in collaboration with William Alder, Admiral Centro Stile, Nancy Regier and Chiara Graneroli of rd&a Studio. Its interior concept was born from numerous years of study and an effort to respond to a complex and challenging demand; to design a temple that welcomes, embraces and transports to another dimension. Dragana Maznic stated that their quest was to produce “a sea goddess that declares perfection in all aspects”. They had a clear mission statement to achieve this “Inspiring open concept interior spaces that are imposing in their proportions yet feel intimate and welcoming. Blur the transition from interior and exterior spaces; shower the interiors with an abundance of natural light and create unobstructed views”. The interior takes its cue from the strikingly contemporary, elegant exterior and infuses it with visual and tactile materials and finishes. The design strikes a balance between cutting edge and lasting appeal, between classical elements of luxury and modern sophistication. ENTOURAGE accommodates twelve guests in five cabins, with owner’s suite. The two VIP and two double guest cabins are located on the lower deck, and can be transformed into a triple bed cabins when required. These cabins are a styled in quiet shades which are brought to life with the remarkable artwork of Vinicio Momoli, who finds inspiration from the secret spots of the Mediterranean Sea, sun and music. Other artworks include Moss & Lam courtesy of Tatar Projects, and Michael Dweck courtesy of Izzy Gallery. The owner’s suite is located forward on the main deck with king size bed, own huge bathroom, office, walk-in wardrobe, private gym and a sauna. Also on the main deck is the spacious main saloon with dining and lounge area, here guests are immersed in luxury experiencing the perfect marriage between light and dark, gloss and matte, cool and warm, hard and soft combined with a rare indulgence

in highly reflective material which offers intricate reflections to entertain the eye. Precise colour schemes are used throughout the yacht to create various moods. Subtle hues of aqua that reference high clear skies and deep azure Mediterranean seas are repeated to create a feeling of serenity and calm. Neutral tones of dove white ash, sophisticated taupe oak, and rich macassar ebony act as a backdrop to colour accents to ensure that ENTOURAGE is nestled in perfect harmony with its environment. Seductive fur and mohair furniture, silk, wool and linen area rugs by Jan Kath and Kashtall, high gloss macassar walls, platinum leaf ceilings, back-lit white onyx stairs, testa di moro leather case goods, unique slabs of regal Nero Portoro and Calacatta, enchanting Tonelli mirrors, celebrate luxury on all levels, evoke opulence and make ENTOURAGE a place of private splendour. All furniture, main suppliers being Latitude Nord and Avant Scene, is free standing, remarkably comfortable and consists of signature pieces by Antonio Citterio, Patricia Urquiola, Roberto Lazzeroni, Limited Edition Cassina, Giorgetti, Minotti and Flexform, complemented with Jan Kath custom silk rugs, Ross Lovegrove and Tom Dixon and Artemide lighting, and unique artwork produced for ENTOURAGE by Vinicio Momoli. Custom vanities, millwork and cabinetry were designed with obsessive attention to detail in collaboration with Admiral, and linens by Claudia Barbari. Accessories and towels supplied by Interni Now. Guests are permitted to luxuriate in their surroundings on expansive obstacle free decks with 270-360 degree views that remain uninterrupted by interior furnishings or fixtures. Oversized windows maximise natural light, and again in collaboration with Admiral, sliding doors and a fold down balcony on the starboard side, which creates a terrace to enjoy the nights at anchor, were introduced on the Second Deck. These design features enable seamless transitions between indoors and outdoors. On the Upper Deck is found a huge sundeck area, the size of which is normally only found on much larger yachts, partly overshadowed by the hard top and featuring

a bar corner, a large spa plunge pool, large table for ‘al fresco’ dining and of course sun bathing areas. The careful and considered choice of furniture and finishes here take a traditional concept and give it a decisively contemporary look without nostalgic influence, such as: B&B Italia woven Abaca coffee table, Patricia Urquiola/B&B Italia woven oversized day beds and hand-made crochet rug, sun pads and lush sectional by Paola Lenti. The design has created a place of complete retreat and relaxation. This space is also directly connected to the aft beach club, which is obtained by opening the transom door. This area is also connected to the garage where all the toys including kayaks, bicycles, paddleboards and a Seadoo, can be found. The launching system for those is provided through a crane which launches and lifts the tenders through a side opening port. This custom full displacement yacht is equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system which reduces roll motion effect and results in a smoother more enjoyable cruising experience. She features ‘at anchor stabilisers’ which work a zero speed to increase on board comfort at anchor and on rough waters. With a cruising speed of 12 knots, a maximum speed of 16.3 knots and a range of 6000nm from her 779900litre fuel tank, she is the perfect combination of performance and luxury. On receiving her award Dragana Maznic said ‘The IY&A Awards have been a phenomenal experience; they are a huge reward for many years of dedication and great passion, and I am very touched by all of the support from all those who voted. From the first moment, I was inspired by the Awards, and by design et al’s organised effort to elevate the level of design across the Yacht and Aviation industries….and to raise the benchmark. The entire process has been a pure pleasure.’ ENTOURAGE embraces and manifests opulence in every detail, object and accessory, with timeless styling. She is a remarkable masterpiece that provokes a spontaneous sense of well-being, where you can find and refresh your energy or get lost and indulge in visual pleasure. The end result exceeded everyone’s expectations.

When a yacht is named ‘IN LOVE’ it is clear from the outset that the design will require attention, affection and appreciation. The winner of the 2015 International Yacht and Aviation Award for Interior Design in the Sailing Yacht category was Su Marine’s ‘IN LOVE’ and the project was something of a match made in heaven. Su Marine were personally requested by ‘IN LOVE’s owner to build a comfortable sailing yacht based on our successful collaboration, ROXANE. His brief was for a more compact version of that yacht, capable of operating with a smaller crew. The Su Marine team were ardent in their desire to balance the demands of perfecting the interior design aspects of the vessel with the technical specification for top-level execution. To improve sailing performance, Su Marine refined the hull lines and introduced a fin keel carrying a big bulb. Draft is moderate at 3.60 m enabling IN LOVE to cruise the Mediterranean bays and islands without much hindrance. A ketch rig with beautifully detailed Dökar aluminum spars, nitronic rod standing rigging, Navtec hydraulics, Bamar hydraulic furlers and lazy jack – full batten on main plus mizzen gives controllable wind power to a crew of three. There are three crew cabins for a total complement of six. Spacious engine room house two generators as well as a 600 hp Scania engine turning a Bruntons Varifold propeller. With this set-up she burns 60 litres per hour cruising at 10 knots whilst pushing full throttle guides her to 12 knots easily. Construction was carried out with the best Su Marine old world craftsmanship, but using epoxy laminating technique for every structural component; the actuality of which blends new and traditional techniques for an unrivalled conception. Su Marine took care to ensure longevity and durability were guaranteed and many of IN LOVE’s components were carbon reinforced such as the deck house beams in order to achieve this. Best seasoned iroko, mahogany and teak timbers were imported to produce an extremely strong and serviceable structure which upheld the yacht’s superior insulation characteristics. Sleek superstructure, fore and aft cockpits, caprails and deck furniture were all finished in varnished Burma teak sitting lusciously on oyster white AwlGrip painted topsides which served the dual purpose of being both fashionable and functional. IN LOVE’s interior aspects were styled in a modern light coloured fashion by European design heavyweight Jean Guy Vergès. Vergès challenged conventions by utilising a range of tactile textures and specialist surfaces for an entirely original effect. Stained lati and oak veneers, swathes of Spinneybeck leather and suede panels were complemented by custom made leather and stainless steel hardware; the idea of extravagant softness and robust strength. His designs for the bathrooms areas continued to employ

effective contrasts with light emprador marble forming main design and details such as the basins carved from rich black marble alluding to the depth of waters below. Whilst the Su Marine team were instrumental the bulk of the design and installation, the owner contributed a stunning element of the yacht’s leisure scene. He gifted the boat with a rich central entertainment system including a hidden TV behind the helm seat for watching a cinema classic under the stars; surely a dream for any yacht proprietor. The initial design IN LOVE was to be very flowing and simple; no sharp corners, large volumes of open space and unrestricted areas which maintained aspects of privacy for all guests. The private suites were designed to be particularly spacious which makes ‘N LOVE particularly unique for her class of sailing yacht. Another of IN LOVEs most attractive qualities is the unmatched amount of external deck surfaces available to guests, encouraging them to relax and socialise whilst enjoying the beautiful vistas. The owner requested that the interiors of this boat be designed in a very contemporary style and Su Marine were able to tailor their concepts to not only fulfill this desire but surpass every expectation of it. Contrasting with the external design of the boat, which is inspired by the classic 1930s sailing yacht, the result of the modern influences creates an elegant mix between the two worlds; timeless elegance and modern excellence. Consequently, one of the biggest compliments IN LOVE’s design team received was that they had managed to reflect the owner’s personality and lifestyle within their creation. In seeking to unify the various influences of the contemporary and classical styles, the design team sought to incorporate aspects of old maritime elements and redesign them in a very modern way yet maintaining the classic appeal with of-the-moment finishes and updates from the cutting edge of today’s yacht design. A colour scheme was implemented for all aspects of the design portfolio, with particular focus on the use of light and shade. The lighting scheme incorporated soft, fading colours from; cream to beige and light greys. These tones contrasted with the darker wood and white lacquers veneers used throughout ‘IN LOVE’ and the use of natural materials were complimented by the gentle shades. The result was an interior of a elegant simplicity; promoting comfort, relaxation and serenity. Such ambiance was consciously continued to the hard-furnishings and architecture of the boat.Clean, uninterrupted lines and muted, soft designs of the furniture create a continuity of ease to the eye from all points of the boat. The unique mix of wood and leathers with Turnstyle hardware accents brings a very comforting feeling to ‘IN LOVE’s journey and her guests will feel very at home

in their splendorous surroundings. A motif inspired by Asian “Bas Relief” art was styled to become the focal point of the private suite and fitted to the wardrobe doors before being enhanced with mirror trimming; a truly stunning example of artistic architecture. The design was replicated on the suites’ doors as a ‘logo’ for IN LOVE with which to cultivate Zen feeling to the interior aspect of the sailing yacht. Ceilings were finished in panels made of Spinneybeck leather, with delicate detail revealing the depth of the design process. The ceiling panel stitching edges honoured classic French leather craft brands which maintains the elegance of the European romance with luxury marine living. The staircases were guided by the same leather paneled walls to continue the design from ceiling to floor which were enhanced by elegantly shaped hand railings in wood and polished stainless steel stanchions bringing finery to even the most functional of installations. The marble bathroom stone was imported from Turkey in a soft-grey Emperador style and mixed with Black Toros stone for the bowl of the washbasin to bring a masculine and solid feel to the entire design. The bathroom was finished with dark oak taupe wood trimmings and accents of the Zen doors from the private suite. Finally the cabinet doors were complimented by the same wood and black stone as the washbasins in order to unify the entire design. The effect was one of absolute style and luxury; a perfect epitome of IN LOVE herself. High quality fabrics brands such as NOBILIS , JIM THOMPSON, PIERRE FREY and SACHO were appointed for ‘IN LOVE’s soft furniture elements and decorative lamps from CONTARDI with their modern and artistic design were installed to compliment the yacht’s fine fixtures and fittings. A centralized entertainment system was installed to fulfill the demands of guests leisure time whilst also ensuring IN LOVE was a practical and purposeful place for her owner to spend time. SU MARINE with their knowledge and expertise were the only team trusted to enhance IN LOVE and bring her to her full potential. Their high quality production and execution of each task using state of the art technologies won much praise from the owner and industry insiders. SU MARINE were able to meet all aspects of the design brief and deliver a beautiful sailing yacht which rivals any in her class. IN LOVE’s design includes a wealth of delicate details and elements of elegance both internally and externally which are stunning, comforting, beautiful and practical. Such skill and artistry was richly praised and worthy of a prestigious award this year and those in the know will surely be looking forward to any future collaborations from this company.

It has been an incredible year for European brand Sarp Yachts, culminating in two of their stunning designs being nominated in separate categories for this year’s awards. It is testament to how highly they are regarded by the industry that both of their designs were crowned winners. The award for ‘Concept over 40m’ went to ‘Sarp 46’; an eponymous and exquisite design worthy of being this year’s number one and baring the company’s prestigious name.

dark bronzes, silvers and grey stained ash veneer. This theme is extended throughout the yacht for complete continuity. Organic, marine animal inspired shapes dominate the design with flowing curves and sleek, suave finishes which feel entirely at home on the sea. The ambiance is one of sophistication and elegance, interwoven with clean simplicity of a design that results in an inviting, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

Sarp were tasked with creating a motoryacht which would stand the test of time. The intention for the design was to give character to the vessel in every possible setting she may sail to. For this her lines had to be full flowing, well-proportioned and fresh; contemporary chic is the essence of the Sarp 46 concept.

Large screens feature in the main saloon entrance with petrified patterned leaves set between sheets of clear glass which allows natural light to thrive in the heart of the yacht. Wall finishes are a balance of wooden planks and pewter coloured slubby silk wall paper, creating an indulgent contrast of textures with stunning effect.

For the internal aspect of Sarp 46, the company worked in partnership with the chief designer at Adam Lay Studio. The privately owned design company excels in the designing of unique and specialist superyacht interiors. For over a decade, Adam Lay Studio has worked tirelessly to establish a truly international clientele and to select only the world’s best shipyards to work with on each design. Established in 2003 the multiple award-winning boutique interior design company based in Hampshire, England still favours a handson and personal approach to all of their collaborations and Sarp liased with the company director himself throughout the entire design process. Adam Lay oversaw each design and instillation decision for the Sarp 46 motor yacht and it is for perhaps this exact reason that the concept embodies such a liveable and individualised spirit.

Customised to suit the décor in each cabin, satin nickel door and cabinet hardware add a touch of refined sparkle to the calm and comfortable backdrop for the most private and personal region of the yacht’s internal aspect. Honed stone tiles and flooring in the bathrooms compliment the fine Dornbracht tapware and accessories and are enhanced by soft, smooth pebbles laid within the bathroom floor to add further texture and richness to the design.

When describing his creation Lay said, “The interior concept of the Sarp Yachts 46m motor yacht blends loft apartment styling and mountain chalet influences with a combination of high end natural timber and special metal finishes. The aim was to produce an elegant interior interwoven with a clean simplicity of design. Intended to make a sophisticated statement with a strong visual impact, both the shipyard Sarp Yachts and the interior builder Ulutas have put quality of finish at the very top of their agenda to showcase the design in the best possible light.” Taking inspiration from natural materials and textures, the on-board design features open grained planked wooden floors, quality leathers and intricate metal detailing to produce a distinguished colour palette of rich

For the soft furnishing elements, an exhaustive list of the world’s best materials and designers was complied. Minotti sofas, Glyn Peter Machin and Giorgetti chairs were selected to bring maximum comfort and style to the living quarters of the Sarp 46. Superior fabrics by Rubelli, Weitzner, Lelievre, Chase Erwin, Romo, Kravet and Armani Casa complete the interior together with highlights of bright colour, bold graphics and accents for dramatic effect. Intended to make a sophisticated statement with a strong visual impact, the outcome is a wonderful marriage of harmonious and clean lined design combined with subtle textures, tones and finishes that delight the senses by encouraging relaxation and enjoyment. Whilst the Sarp 46 concept was one in which luxury was the primary aspect, three fundamental principles remained paramount to the entire project: safety first, form to satisfy function and maximum use of space. In order to fulfill each of these aspects in their entirety, the design team set out a plan to ensure every element of their design was executed to satisfy the key principles. The yacht’s shape and size was carefully refined

to stay just below the 500 grosston mark whilst the space within was utilised with skill in order to maximise its potential. Steel was the obvious choice for a strong and reliable hull with ample tank capacity; ensuring the Sarp 46 would be both powerful and durable for years to come. The team also opted for epoxy composite to construct the curvy superstructure. This allowed them to save weight from the superstructure and fairing compound without compromising any aspect of her ability . These intelligent but ambitious design decisions became a reality thanks to the diligence and experience of our Sarp’s yard manager Emre Sandan and his team. Under his omnipotent watch, the hull was analysed in depth by CTO of Gdansk using cfd and tank test methods for low resistance and reduced wave profile. Watertight integrity was paramount in the design agenda, hence the incorporation at least two additional watertight bulkheads and cofferdams into the hull structure. Never one to cut corners, Sarp’s team spent many hours honing the styling with 3d design tools. A scale model of the concept was built ahead of plans finalised in order to iron out any discrepancies ahead of the design being approved. Sarps house design and engineering team were in contact at every stage of outfitting to ensure the yacht came together in a carefully planned and perfectly executed manor. This guaranteed a level of quality enviable by even the most established European yards. Whilst building a custom yacht in Turkey is normally very good value for money Sarp were not satisfied with being ‘normal.’ It was simply not enough for them to deliver a feat of design; they desired to make luxury affordable and liveable in a way unknown to most in the trade. Sarp Yachts have set themselves a philosophy to pursue the best of quality and attain the top finish where every euro spent adds something important and elevates the design to better itself each time. The Sarp 46m is a truly exceptional feat of engineering, in addition to being a masterpiece of design. It is clear that every inch of this project was planned and analysed to ensure the finished project was one of unrivalled excellence. All of this considered it is perhaps no surprise that the award was voted as this year’s winner in its category. One can only imagine what brilliance they will offer with each coming year.

This year’s International Yacht and Aviation Awards saw a range of cutting-edge designs and contemporary concepts collect well deserved awards. The industry itself continually strides forward in the direction of creation and newness however there remains a significant desire to improve on the past and bring freshness to dated design.

The observation lounge was re-orientated to look out – not in – and provide a haven of tranquillity that can be transformed into a private cinema at the touch of a button.

ShellShock Designs for Stirling & Co Design were successfully shortlisted for the Power Yacht Refit over 30 Metres Award at this year’s ceremony. Their complete rejuvenation of GALAXY was a much merited project and showcased the talents of their design team to full effect.

The use of new materials and products such as the feature marble by ShellShock Designs in the new modern interior creates bright, comfortable, flexible spaces allowing effortless change in use and mood from family to party mode by day or night supported by hugely improved service provision by the crew.

The design project is a comprehensive refit of the interior accommodation with modifications to the exterior to give a 5 star charter experience. The new owner of GALAXY wanted to build on her successful charter reputation by injecting a bright, fresh, youthful and contemporary spirit into her original high gloss timber interior. The new design was conceived to give her a new identity with a less formal interior suited to a younger and more relaxed lifestyle for groups of friends but doubling as a chic party vessel for high profile events. As well as providing a neutral backdrop for his 20th Century art collection, the owner felt the calm sophisticated atmosphere needed dramatic focal features to offset the rich monochromatic textured surfaces. The design concept adopted the approach of inserting new features into the existing interior to add both interest and functionality. New white marmorino window surrounds in all areas complemented the existing maple and walnut while reflecting natural light into the interior. New inbuilt window seats maximise connection with the water giving panoramic views out. A new internally lit onyx bar on the main deck provides a new meeting point for guests

A Detailed & Bespoke Yacht Refit

M/Y Turquoise by H2 Yacht Design - Winner of the Power Yacht Refit Category at The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015

Luxe Et Al 83

The winner of the 2015 International Yacht and Aviation award for Power Yacht Refit was H2 Yacht Design’s M/Y Turquoise. The fifth annual awards was one of the competition’s most hotley contested and it truly is testament to the ingenuity of the Londonbased design company that they were chosen by industy peers as being the best of a shortlist which featured many stunning designs and represented the awards’ most successful year to date. Designed to turn heads, the breathtaking 181 ft/55.4m custom motor yacht Turquoise was built in 2011 by Proteksan Turquoise. The Turkish firm produce four first-class luxury yachts per year but M/Y Turquoise has become the jewel in their heavily ordained crown. Under her new owner, Turquoise has undergone a considerable interior refit in 2014. Her luxurious, contemporary interior was conceived by the award winning team at H2 Yacht Design. The Refit was completed in Italy, Genoa at Amico. Amico worked on all exterior changes and MVS & Associates were the interior contractors. The collaboration was key to the overall success of the design and a representative for Amico & Co explained the way in which the cooperation between companies helped the design process yield a prosperous and now award winning result; “Amico & Co. had an excellent cooperation with H2 Yacht Design and the company MVS & Associates, and this relationship allowed us to achieve extraordinary results, both quality and time wise. The end result was obtained thanks to the professionalism of Amico, H2 and MVS and to the skill of the workers of all the in-house departments involved.” The design brief for the refit was entirely focused on enhancing the ambience of luxury and indulgence on board. M/Y Turquoise’s new owner requested that H2 Yacht Design refit the yacht with a lavish and plush look inspired by M/Y Talisman Maiton after having chartered this yacht for various social occasions. It was more than good fortune that M/Y Talisman Maiton was part of H2’s own portfolio and therefore the incoming design team were able to approach the M/Y Turquoise project with a wealth of inspirations, suppliers and concepts already freely available. The owners expressed their love for the way in which the Talisman Maiton operated as well as their good relationship with her crew. Upon completion of the M/Y Turquoise refit, some ex Maiton crew were hired to provide the same level of familiar and exemplary service on board the owners’ new, updated yacht.

Turquoise’s interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 staterooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 3 double cabins, and 1 twin cabin. Her 12 crew are also treated to improved facilities with increased space within their own quarters. Elegant styling, beautiful furnishings and sumptuous seating feature throughout the refreshed design and her living areas combine soft tactile textures with hard wearing surfaces for luxury and longevity. The interior aspect invokes a tangible sense of relaxation and comfort whilst the design lends itself to socialising and leisurely pursuits with ease. The spaces, both exterior and interior, have been designed to accommodate as much human interaction as possible, to create a nice family atmosphere whilst providing areas of privacy for those wishing to escape the hectic nature of every day life. Turquoise’s impressive leisure and entertainment facilities make her the ideal charter yacht for entertaining with family and friends. The sun deck, with its oversized spa pool that comfortably accommodates 12 people, offers a huge, sinuously curving relaxation area that is paved with sun pads, as well as a bar and L-shaped settees under the shade of the radar arch. Every aspect of the demands of entertaining are catered for from dining, drinking and delighting in a dance or dip in the pool. Whilst the external aspects of the sun deck serve the purpose of hosting parties and exploiting the natural sunlight to its best advantage, the interior design of M/Y Turquoise displays the decadent depths of the design process. The team consulted many suppliers and manufacturers throughout the project, using their enviable list of international contacts to source only the finest elements with which to refresh the yacht’s impressive iterior. Rich, inviting carpets were supplied by UK based firm Arundell Carpets. The idea of contrasting the sleek solid surfaces of the yacht’s exterior with soft, comforting flooring internally was a key component of the desire to create a welcoming sanctuary within M/Y Turquoise. The company specialise in providing furnishings for the yacht industry and their expertise in this field is evidenced by the craft and appearance of the carpet design. Furthermore, London-based interior design firm Porta Romana supplied artistic light fixtures for each of M/Y Turquoise’s cabins. The undulating shape of the Ribbon Wall light sets beautiful soft shadows that lighten and darken the surface finish to create an

inviting and peaceful ambience within the lavish master suite of the yacht. Also in this room is the company’s large Pasteur lamp which is reminiscent of old apothecary bottles for an antique luxury feel. The beautiful crackled glass shimmers in the light and delightfully enhances the homelike ambience of the stunning stateroom. The Nickel Box wall light was personally designed by Ali Milam, one of the company’s senior specialists. A classic, well proportioned about this piece brings elegance to one of M/Y Turquoise’s suites by using the simplicity forms with beautiful material for a perfect, subtle but impressive finish. This design features in all three of the the double guest cabins along with the Droplet lamp design. A delicate beauty of blown glass with two planes of scalloped and polished facets on either side, this lamp is akin to table jewellery; admirable and functional. An elegant neck of gold or silver spun texture sets off the lamp body like a fine piece of adornment, found on one of the M/Y Turquoise’s many trips to the world’s shopping capitals. In the twin room, the dramatic slashes of metal in the Flynn Wall Light are actually made by individually cut and beaten ‘Flynns’, strips of metal, heated in the forge and then carefully bent and beaten into shape. Named after the legendary actor Errol Flynn who played so many accomplished swordsmen. The acute artistry evident within this design encapsulates the level of consideration and care which informed every aspect of this project. The guest room also features the same large Pasteur lamp design as the master suite, which brings a beautiful sense of completion and continuity to the entire design. To have chosen such detailed and bespoke designed elements for even the most practical of installations such as light fittings is the essence of a company which worked tirelessly to ensure the refit proves as impressive as it is successful. M/Y Turquoise effortlessly combines style with functionality; she is both pleasing to look at and to sail. A truly productive project on every level and a winner in every sense, the M/Y Turquoise collaboration was a flourishing success for all parties and H2 Yachts can be immensely proud of what they achieved in this project, in addition to the overwhelming pride of the yacht’s delighted owners.

With each passing year the International Yacht and Aviation awards becomes more competitive as designers and creators push the limits of possibility and expectation. The 2015 awards were particularly impressive given the standard of the shortlist and the calibre of designs. The award for the Private Jet Design was awarded to Niki Lauda’s Global 6000 by Bombardier. The aviation heavyweights exceed every anticipation for this design and the finish is one of absolute excellence, designed with the owner’s personal style and impeccable standards at the fore. After nearly 4 decades since founding his eponymous airline in 1979, F1 hero Niki Lauda’s passion for aviation and the luxury lifestyle only increases. Synonymous with speed, style and success it was only natural that his new collaboration with aviation alchemists Bombardier would be a tangible representation of both Lauda’s life and Bombardier’s expertise. Whilst Lauda has previous experience in overseeing the design and implementation of commercial craft, this venture was an entirely more personal affair.

“ With European elegance and various international influences throughout, Lauda and his team of designers have been able to create a masterpiece of modern manufacturing. ”

Niki Lauda’s Global 6000 epitomises bespoke design. With European elegance and various international influences throughout, Lauda and his team of designers have been able to create a masterpiece of modern manufacturing. Though surely a delightful indulgence for those involved, the purpose of the project was to satisfy Lauda’s practical needs by creating a new addition to his fleet with which he could fly himself to F1 races and fulfil his duties as the non-executive Chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas team. As such, the final concept had to facilitate professional and personal travel with the style and sophistication expected of a threetimes Formula 1 Champion. It is perhaps fitting therefore that the interior furnishings took their inspiration from a classic symbol of business and success; the classic pinstripe suit. Tailored, smart and timeless are just a few of the words associated with the aforementioned fashion staple yet all could apply to Niki Lauda’s Global 6000 and the man himself. Both the interior and exterior designs were orchestrated by Lauda’s life-long friend and designer Hannes Rausch. Rausch’s involvement with Lauda’s aviation projects extends back to the company’s origins and he has been credited with successfully masterminding both the exterior and internal designs of Lauda’s other aircraft.

After collaborating on so many projects together it comes as no surprise to find that Rausch’s eye for detail and exemplary execution of each design task, is completed with knowing consideration for Lauda’s personal taste and aviation needs. Created to answer the needs of Lauda’s hectic but luxurious lifestyle, the Global 6000 is an advanced, comfortable and bespoke business jet which is not only an interior design marvel but remains at the cutting edge of aviation design. With a state-ofthe-art cockpit, fully-furnished cabin and the tranquil sanctuary of its aft stateroom, the Global 6000 seizes the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in style, ingenuity, comfort and convenience – nothing has been overlooked, as per Mr Lauda’s request. Whilst the sophistication and engineering excellence of Bombardier’s influence on the project speaks for itself, the design aspect is a combination of Lauda’s personal taste, Rausch’s flawless execution and their mutual desire for inexhaustible quality for all of their collaborations. “Design is very important to me. I’ve been working with a great artist for some 3040 years now, Johann Rausch. He actually designed many things for me: the Lauda Air logo, the way the airplanes looked, the flight attendants’ uniforms… And I called upon him once again when I sold Lauda Air and started my second airline, Niki. So he knows what he can do on airplanes: paint, color and all these kind of things. He knows about the rules, but he’s still an artist with outlandish ideas. And for my Global 6000 aircraft, he went for stripes all over the airplane. He has chosen an interior which I really like -- it’s different, European in style and certainly not boring! I’m completely happy about it. It’s exactly the way I wanted it. And it works perfectly.” Lauda explains. The project was a true labour of love for all involved but the outcome is a definitive example of uncomprimised, bespoke brilliance. The Global 6000 sets the performance benchmark in the ultra-long range jet category. Created to answer the needs of the world’s most discerning travellers, the 6000 is an advanced, comfortable and luxurious business jet. Providing a travelling experience unlike any other, begins with the Global 6000 aircraft is class-defining cabin width, a determined focus on detail to reflect Lauda’s lifestyle and aviation expertise. Longer seated lengths, optimized cabin humidity, and an environment incomparably quiet in flight the Global 6000 is a true testament to luxury and abundance. Spacious and elegant its cabin is as comfortable as the world’s finest hotels and as unique as the owner himself.

Private aviation has long been the benchmark for luxury, high-end travel. For this reason aviation architects continually seek new and ever more impressive ways to facilitate the needs and desires of their customers. With each passing year design templates are submitted across the industry which inspire much admiration and competitiveness. As a result the feats of engineering excellence now present in the most affluent areas of private aviation are truly original and pioneering. One such example of this aspirational innovation is epitomised in the 2015 winner of the International Yacht and Aviation for ‘Private Jet Concept Design’. ‘Belvedere’ by Macaer Aviation Group Spa (Mag Design Studio) explores augmented reality and a new approach to the flight experience. The Belvedere concept entirely regenerates the blueprint for private aviation. The sleek, streamlined and futuristic design represents the way forward for aviation by creating an on-board environment which rivals the world’s finest residences for luxury, style and comfort.

“ A particularly arresting aspect of the MAG design is the installation of an on-board fitness area equipped with state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment... ”

Passengers will experience a unique and privileged view of the external environment and dynamic panorama to make the in-flight ambience one of total sensory fulfilment. Mag Design Studio concept effectively opens the sky to it’s passengers in a way which has never been seen before.

Each VIP seat has two dedicated extractable tables and removable supports for electronic devices which ensure the Belvedere can be used for business and leisure flights equally. Whilst the Belvedere’s creative aspects are entirely original one of the most individual elements of the design is the electrochromic windows, exclusively designed and patented by MAG studios, disguised behind adjustable Louvres. This design offers an unrivalled view of the external vista; stunning sunsets, incredible cloud patterns and azure skies are the natural backdrop for the Belvedere’s seamless flight. Passengers will enjoy their flight like never before, in the literal heights of luxury. A particularly arresting aspect of the MAG design is the installation of an on-board fitness area equipped with state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment encouraging passengers to overlook the traditional in-active experience of commercial flight and instead arrive at their destination feeling energised and healthy. The impressive fitness area separates the VIP area from the master suite. This spacious bedroom area features a king size bed, dressing area and an en-suite lavatory equipped with a shower.

Upon entering the aircraft, a spacious galley can be found. This area includes several amenities and storage compartments; near the galley is an attendant’s seat, lavatory and access to the cargo area. This layout separates the jet’s living quarters from the functional, staff areas to ensure passengers can experience an uninterrupted flight with respect for their privacy at all times.

When the aircraft door is open, the master bedroom enjoys the view of a small terrace, equipped with chairs and tables for an outdoor lunch; a completely new concept for any aircraft. The inclusion of an external terrace epitomises the limitless nature of the MAG Design Studio’s approach to this project; no idea was considered too improbable, no standard too high. The terrace design was achieved thanks to the team’s extensive research and expertise in selecting a specific aircraft type and doors layout with which to facilitate their architectural aspirations.

The VIP area is equipped with four adjustable armchairs, enclosed in two spacious shelllike ledges which reiterates the emphasis on discretion and personal space which informs the core aspect of this design. To allow multiple passengers to travel in comfort together, four additional seats are available to create a modular sofa effect, much like the seating found in contemporary homes.

The Belvedere’s colour scheme and materials utilise a modern palette based on the tones visible in the sky. Ranging from white to lucid blues with white leather upholstery adding a luxurious tactile texture to the futuristic finish. Sleak wood trims in stained gray with a glossy coating enhances the texture of the grain and maintains the contemporary nature of the impressive design.

Whilst The Belvedere is an example of entirely modern manufacturing and current design, there is a definite sense that the on-board ambience is one of ‘a home away from home’; comfort, entertainment and enjoyment are the foundation of this magnificent jet’s arrangement.

In it’s entirety The Belvedere is an elixir of design, aviation and architectural brilliance. By challenging the conventions of traditional private travel, MAG Design Studio have redressed the balance between achievement and ambition. The design delivers on every level from style to substance, power and privilege.

The upper Passenger Service Units (PSU) are equipped with LED accent lights, reading lights and storage areas. The MAG Design Studio team have utilised the space available on-board to expert effect with intelligent storage solutions and innovative lighting

ideas which creates attractive ambience which is neither too bright nor too light.

Once again the bar has been raised with expert skill by a driven team of talented designers, the likes of whom are sure to inspire a future of concepts which seek to match and surpass this year’s winner.

The Story, History and Character of Hong Kong The new Qantas Hong Kong Lounge by Sumu Design in collaboration with Caon Studio and Hewshott International.

Following on from the success of their Qantas Singapore Lounge, Sumu Design were once again invited to design the new Qantas Hong Kong Lounge. In collaboration with Canon Studio, Sumu Design created an inspiring space which surpassed the limitations of the initial design brief. The project also saw the Sumu team work with PDM International Hong Kong who provided the essential local support for the project. Qantas’ brief was to reflect a new boutique style concept representing Hong Kong through its design, and taking cues from the design developed for the Qantas Singapore Lounge.

“ The project was the accumulation of knowledgable, intelligent collaborations between Sumu’s Design Team, Caon Studio and high-end technologies firm Hewshott International. ”

Hong Kong is the perpetual Asian city: a fluid, swiftly evolving metropolis surrounded by stunning wilderness. It is a vibrant, vertical city split by an expanse of water and surrounded by clam and nature. Hong Kong also represents both a vital business gateway and a home away from home for a large international business community. This was the concept and vision that influenced both the planning and architecture of the lounge, in which the Qantas Hong Kong lounge became a metaphor of Hong Kong. Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula are represented by the bar and dining areas which capture the vibrancy, movement and interaction of people. These elements are surrounded by the calm and relaxed atmosphere of the lounge areas. The lounge areas in turn represent the natural landscape and beaches that surround the built-up zones of the city. The verticality of Hong Kong is embodied within the building’s large steel structures. The structures are used to break up the 120m-long, 2,000 sq. m site, creating intimate, private and secluded spaces for customers. These structures reference the steel signage structures fixed to the sides of buildings within the city area. Meanwhile the canopies pay homage to the city’s side streets where small eating houses and stalls provide privacy and escape from the bustling city while still remaining connected to the action. Hong Kong is a narrow lounge stretching 120min length. It is located within the open cabin of Hong Kong Airport with views of the apron and surrounding terminals. It is bathed in natural light, creating an open outdoor feel. The project was the accumulation of knowledgable, intelligent collaborations between Sumu’s Design Team, Caon Studio and high-end technologies firm Hewshott International. When discussing the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge their Group CEO Peter Hunt emphasised the level of detail involved in the company’s critical contribution. “Hewshott International was an integral part of the team dealing with the acoustics and audio visual design. The location and shape of the lounge, and few horizontal surfaces, meant the traditional home of ceiling speakers was absent, nonetheless, control and clarity was essential. The revolutionary use of flat panel, low profile speakers

provided a consistent quality of sound, but also minimised spillage into the general concourse, whilst retaining the clarity and volume that makes this space work exceptionally well. Hewshott has developed a strong pedigree in premium airport lounges with a number of commissions across the world.” he said. Hewshott International’s technology ensures passengers are provided with the best in entertainment and information services. This integral element of functionality and purpose informs the entire project with substantial success. The design is an inspiring use of space and creativity but the primary focus of the project maintained the understanding of passengers’ need for comfort and service in such an environment. This is also reflected in the very high customer approval rating the lounge has received since opening. The design intelligently encapsulates the story, history and character of the city. The rawness of the streets and old architecture is represented by the raw concrete finishes on the floor, bar and tables. This is juxtaposed against the use of premium finishes such as leather, silver grey stone, timber veneer, timber textured floor tiles throughout the lounge – representing the new modern day Hong Kong. The finishes used within the lounge represent the traditional, colonial and modern aspects of the city whilst the materials and architecture of the lounge create a sensory and visual snap shot of people’s experiences during their travels through Hong Kong. The aforementioned use of hard materials such as concrete, stone, tiles and steel serve a dual purpose of adhering to fire regulations within the airport. Every material/finish, piece of furniture, equipment and accessory was required to have fire load calculations done on the material make-up of each item and the combination of each item, either individually or as a group setting. The fire loading not only influenced the finishes used within the design it also impacted on the layout and planning of the lounge. A project of this scale is never without complication and the design team were faced with some challenging health and safety requirements throughout the process. The fire regulations within Hong Kong airport meant the team were confined to using materials with low combustible properties. Inspiringly however, Sumu Design’s team were able to turn this limitation and to their advantage, in order to meet the brief of “representing Hong Kong through its design.” The design therefore is a project of all round excellence having expertly interpreted the design brief to create a stunning space of distinguished artistic and architectural brilliance. Hong Kong has much to offer residents and tourists and it is befitting that the Qantas Hong Kong Lounge represents this fine city with such quality.

Canadian Ambience Maple Leaf Lounge by Dialogue 38, Winner of the First Class Lounge Award at The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015 Luxe Et Al 107

In a large, transient space such as an airport a designer is faced with many complex considerations. Often the greatest challenge is being able to create a design of substance and significance for a place which, by its very nature, is vast, busy and inconsistent. However, for the right designer this offers an enviable opportunity to showcase their skills to an entirely international audience.

headphones and individual satellite TV screens, high-speed internet and USB ports. Furthermore the lounge also features extensive entertainment and hospitality facilities including spa-inspired showers with oversized shower-heads and in-shower music, a cooking station where a chef will prepare meals to order and a fully stocked bar specialising in Canadian beer.

The Air Canada Business Class Lounge at Heathrow Airport is a fabulous example of international design being utilised in a personalised, considered fashion to have intelligent impact. As the flagship airline of its namesake, Air Canada proudly seeks to represent the nation with style and unrivalled service. It was essential therefore that their Business Class Lounge would embody these values and be an authentic reflection of Canadian culture.

The combination of these first-rate facilities and beautifully crafted furnishings work in harmony with Dialogue 38’s design motif to both impress and entertain on every level. 2Loon’s contribution, by way of artistically articulated furniture, compliments and completes the design with finesse. Each installation serves a purpose both visually and functionally but perhaps the most impressive piece is the sixteen-foot business centre conference table. Hand-crafted from walnut trees originally planted by settlers in Southern Ontario in the early nineteenth century, this table represents a tangible link to shared heritage.

The renowned Toronto-based Dialogue 38 were commissioned for this project on account of their intrinsic knowledge of the Canadian identity and their obvious design expertise. They are responsible for the timeless interior and significant success of the space.

“ Whilst the design is itself incredibly impressive, Dialogue 38’s team were meticulous in their approach to utilising the space’s architectural advantages to their best effect. ”

From the outset it is evident that the lounge is infused with native sights and textures for a true reflection on the country. Maple wood and cross-cut Eramosa marble are used to create drama and warmth throughout whilst furniture and artworks by Canadian artists are displayed throughout the lounge. Hospitality and service areas present guests with a range of areas to work, or simply relax and refresh. The maple wood and Eramosa marble are emphasised by the dramatic lighting which is specifically arranged across the design. The upscale lounge feels open and airy while providing private zones for travellers to relax. During the project Dialogue 38 collaborated with fellow Tornontonians, 2Loons; a bespoke furnishings firm. Company represenative David Wieler spoke about the authentic nature of the project and the way in which their designs paid hommage to their home nation. “2Loons is an innovative supplier of soft seating and solid wood products that feature all-Canadian design, development and production. Arising from the frustration from a lack of affordable local alternatives, the principals of 2Loons developed these collections to address the need for Canadianmade, customizable products with a modern design aesthetic.” he said. In addition to the impressive design aesthetic and charming Canadian ambience, the lounge also features the best in entrainment technology and facilities. These include a specialist Quiet Zone, comprising fully reclining chairs, noise-cancelling

110 Luxe Et Al

Whilst the design is itself incredibly impressive, Dialogue 38’s team were meticulous in their approach to utilising the space’s architectural advantages to their best effect. The lounge benefits from a bank of bay windows running the length of the west wall, which gives passengers panoramic views of the runway. The glass structure ensures natural sunlight fills the space with ease and maintains a beautifully bright ambience throughout. In total the space measures 700 square metres but Dialogue 38’s design ensures the substantial volume is not overwhelming by divising individual zones for passengers to enjoy depending on their requirements. The business hub is segregated to ensure private, focused work can take place. The private meeting room and individual work pods facilitate a range of business engagements whilst the bank of desks allow laptops and tablets to be connected, whilst there are state of the art PCs available. The bar and bistro area is also separated from the central lounge area to allow passengers to enjoy a private space to have their refreshments. The main lounge also offers smaller socialising zones within the expansive space, which permits passengers the freedom of choice regarding how they spend their time before boarding. The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge is a truly exceptional project on many levels but the way in which Dialogue 38, together with 2Loons, have been able to create a truly authentic space which represents the strong identity and culture of Canada with class. A space which reflects the natural beauty of Canada and provides everything passengers need to refresh and refuel in a familiar and relaxing environment.

Inspirational Dutch Design that has transformed passenger experience in Schiphol Airport. Amsterdam based designer Frank Tjepkema and his company Tjep are enjoying their success as winners of the Retail Space Category at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2015, held in Venice on May 15th 2015. Founded by Frank Tjepkema in 2001, Tjep studio has garnered a reputation for delivering outstanding creative work across a broad field of expertise that includes award winning interior, architectural, product, furniture, visual and jewellery design. It is their ability to fuse together peerless design with accomplished expertise in the latest production techniques, which appeal to both the commercial and cultural clients seeking unique and original design perspective. Work from Tjep is part of permanent collections exhibited in major museums around the world on numerous occasions, including the Museum of Art and Design, New York. Based on this reputation, Tjep was specifically selected to design a prominent area of Schipol airport, in Amsterdam. The Area, lounge 3, features a restaurant (Bread), cheese counter (Say Cheese) and a flower shop (House of Tulips/Aviflora). The three basic product categories these concepts represent are strongly rooted in Dutch culture. The flower shop for Aviflora became a glass canal house that elevates and descends over a small market display. Every morning a hydraulic system lifts up the house and the contents is spread out to form a small market. The glass house represents the production source (Holland is the country of greenhouses) and the canal house represents the possible destination for the flowers. This combination of references makes it possible to avoid obvious clichés. The new plaza is a leading and inspiring space with an atmosphere that has a strong link with the Netherlands. This important landmark allows for a unique experience for passengers at Schipol Airport. As a measure of the success of this project the turnover of this concept, as well as the Bread and Say Cheese concept, has doubled as compared to the concepts that used to occupy the exact same location previously. Tjep’s success at the awards was achieved by the appreciation for the design by professionals across the Aviation sector, and Frank’s enthusiasm for his unique creation.
