It is very exciting to see Luxe et al as a complete magazine in its own right this month. This is the first copy of Luxe et al in this format, as you know it was launched in April 2011 as part of design et al, in line with the first International Yacht Awards hosted by design et al at The Savoy Hotel in London. Since this time Luxe et al has grown in significance being part of design et al as a back to back issue four times a year initially, increasing to six times a year in 2014.

readership and distribution of design et al, it will now be published as a bi-monthly complete magazine. Our aim is to concentrate on design and innovation in both the yacht and aviation industry on a global level.

We thought however that it was now time to stand alone, at least in terms of pagination. So although Luxe et al will enjoy the established

Best,

This issue we are looking at the interior and exterior design of some of the key yachts at Monaco 2014, with particular reference perhaps to their interior schemes, as well as some of the projects short listed for 2015, in both yacht and aviation categories for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards. This is an exciting time for us all and I do look forward to sharing more with you next issue.

Yacht Industry News

Mangusta 165 E The latest flagship of the Maxi Open Mangusta fleet by Overmarine Group made her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show - the Mangusta 165 E is currently the fastest Open Maxi Yacht in her category, measuring 50m in length and able to reach a staggering speed of 40 knots. The Owner, in fact, requested the Mangusta lines be interpreted in a more aggressive, ‘muscular‘ fashion. In perfect synergy

with the designer Stefano Righini and the shipyard’s design department, a number of important aesthetic-structural issues were carried out: a new side window on the main deck, a unique pane of glass and a restyling of flybridge perimeter, creating a truly powerful and aggressive stern. The on-board volumes are highly impressive and the yacht offers a top performance, which provides not only energy and stability but above all comfort. In sync with every Mangusta, this yacht features entirely bespoke and customised interiors. With the level of personalisation

even greater than in previous models, the amount of materials found on-board is an incredible feature alone. The Mangusta 165 E features over 15 different kinds of wood, coloured veneers and lacquering, at least 10 different kinds of marble, amongst which the highly prestigious Blue Tiger Eye, shagreen leather, as well as glass, motherof-pearl, onyx – truly innovative aesthetic solutions. The meticulous attention to detail found on this yacht is difficult to find on-board a model of this size. She really is a new starting point for Mangusta.

CAKEWALK As the flagship superyacht of New York-based Derecktor Shipyard, 85.6m CAKEWALK is the largest volume yacht ever constructed in the United States. Elegant and an imposing presence on the water, she was a breathtaking sight at the Monaco Yacht Show. Internationally renowned Tim Heywood was responsible for the cascading decks and sweeping lines of her much-admired exterior. The classically themed Elizabeth Dalton interior adds a sense of grandeur that befits her impressive size and 2,998GT of volume. CAKEWALK sleeps up to 14 guests, with six luxurious ensuite guest cabins leading off a long hallway on the main deck, and a whole deck dedicated to the Owner’s suite. The exclusive Owner’s deck offers ultimate privacy and comprises an expansive master suite with his and hers marble bathrooms, study/lounge, gymnasium and day spa. A grand spiral staircase and an elevator link the four deck levels, providing easy access to all areas of the yacht. She features extensive exterior decks beautifully set up for al fresco dining and relaxing in ultimate comfort. The expansive sun deck features a bar, choice of dining tables, jacuzzi and plenty of sun loungers. Her tenders and toys are housed in a full beam climate-controlled garage, with large gullwing doors opening on to the water from port and starboard. CAKEWALK takes centre stage anywhere she cruises – she is iconic and powerful with immense proportion.

Equanimity Oceanco’s 91.5m Equanimity – Latin for ‘aequus’ meaning balanced and ‘animus’ meaning spirit or internal state is aptly named; from her exterior to her inner core, she is perfectly well balanced. Equanimity has the distinction of being the industry’s first superyacht designed and built to be fully Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) compliant. Her chic clean exterior styling is the combined work of Oceanco and Andrew Winch Designs. The breathtakingly beautiful interior is also the incredible quintessential touch of designer Andrew Winch. The inherent oriental-inspired themes yield a montage of sumptuous materials such as wenge, gold leaf, bamboo and marbles creating an opulent and soothing ambiance that complements the Owners’ Chinese origins. Equanimity provides luxury accommodation

for 26 guests in a variety of flexibly configured staterooms— a magnificent master suite, three VIPs, three doubles and two twin staterooms. She has ample accommodation for 28 crew to cater to all the Owners’ and guests’ desires. The grandeur of the spa and beach club is complete with sauna, hammam, experiential showers, plunge pool and multi-faceted beauty salon. The spa area leads on to a fully equipped gym and Pilates studio that can be extended through a fold down platform at sea level, creating an indoor-outdoor wellness area that is unequalled afloat. Providing a new benchmark in superyachtbased aviation, the upper deck boasts a fully certified helipad in accordance with CAP437 regulations as adapted for the PYC. Equanimity is steel hulled with an aluminium superstructure and is able to achieve top speeds in excess of 20 knots.

MOGAMBO Launched by the Germany-based shipyard Nobiskrug, the 74m custommade superyacht MOGAMBO was built in cooperation with the renowned UK based designers Reymond Langton Design – responsible for both the interior design and exterior styling. As one of the standout yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show in September, she has a very sleek and sporty aesthetic exterior. Her look is powerful and slightly masculine, with a two-tone color scheme of medium grey and snow white. MOGAMBO’s interior provides a taste of African culture. The contemporary and calm architecture is combined with organic shaped furniture and completed with a very detailed lighting concept. The enormous deck spaces feature extensive sun bathing and relaxation areas on all

decks. The sun deck provides a spacious gymnasium providing a unique view over the sea with the adjoining Jacuzzi. The large aft bathing platform with the adjoining beach club –with a spa and beauty area - is the favorite place for those who love to be right on the sea. Amongst many others, the high ceilings are an outstanding feature on this superyacht. This is emphasised by the large full-height windows, allowing daylight to glisten through the interior giving a spectacular clear view of ocean waves. The extensive use of nonstructural GRP elements in the superstructure give the superyacht outstanding exterior shape and keep the weight of the vessel to a minimum, thus adding to the seaworthiness of the vessel. MOGAMBO achieves an outstanding overall performance with a maximum speed of 17.5 knots by two MTU main engines with 1,760 kW each.

Solandge Solandge – the stunning 85m superyacht from Lürssen was showcased at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. Taking centre stage in Port Hercules, she is a prime example of Lürssen’s outstanding capabilities. Delivered in October 2013, Solandge is an iconic vessel built for pure family yachting pleasure. She is engineered for self-sufficiency during extended voyages on the high seas and highly equipped for whatever she may face. Exterior Designer Espen Oeino has given Solandge exceptionally harmonious proportions and generous spaces. Despite her stately dimensions (length: 85.1m; beam: 13.8m) and the accommodation of the full scope of the owner’s wishes, her lines remain sleek and elegant. A dark blue hull further highlights her graceful and dynamic flair. Interior designer Aileen Rodriguez has created a highly luxurious atmosphere with classical touches and a contemporary backdrop. A special mix of rare and strikingly beautiful materials provides Solandge a unique and exclusive style. When entering Solandge through the main entrance into the wooden floor and onyx inlay floored foyer, you are instantly captured by the golden “Tree of Life” – a lighted sculpture where more than 1,200 points of light act as tropical rain drops that bring coloured glass flowers to bloom. The tree is approximately 16 metres (50 feet) high and covers the entire height from the tank deck up to the bridge deck. Solandge represents the very latest in high-end luxury cruising. With a highly experienced crew she will, without doubt, provide the ultimate experience to remember.

Further Shortlist Success for Esenyacht in the IY&A Awards 2015 Esenyacht have achieved further shortlist success in the International Yacht & Aviation 2015 with GLORIOUS shortlisted for the Sailing Yacht Interior Design Award. The brief was for a gentleman’s sailing yacht that would combine elegant and spacious living with the external facilities to enjoy the pleasures of the sun and the sea by day, and the warm Mediterranean evenings and nights at anchor or in harbour. The owner wanted a more traditional interior than the exterior might suggest, with soft wood tones offset by pale fabrics to create interiors that would be cool and bright by day, and warm and welcoming after dark. Subtle lighting and

high-gloss woodwork were also to be used to create a feeling of sensual luxury. The owner also wanted to make the most of the craftsmanship available at Esenyacht across the full range of natural materials and specified the use of highquality detailing to enhance the classical ambiance down below. As a sailing yacht the external areas were particularly important. Here the owner sought a number of areas suited for different needs, ranging from a protected space at the main deck level to a spacious area uncluttered by sail controls where he and his guests could relax when both at sea and in harbour. For this, good views of the surroundings were also a requirement. www.esenyacht.com

Sanlorenzo Spa Compete for the Power Yacht 25-40 Metres Award in the IY&A Awards 2015 Sanlorenzo Spa has been successfully shortlisted in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015 with Sanlorenzo SL118 “H1” in the Power Yacht 25-40 Metres category. The exterior and interior were designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design with the interior designed in collaboration with architect Margherita Casprini. This 36.5m yacht demonstrates the purest Sanlorenzo style, enhanced and strengthened with cutting edge features and designed according to her owner’s requests and needs. In the outlook of an extended renovation of the planing hull range, Sanlorenzo found it necessary, also for customer demand, to create a new and larger flagship, with more spaces and more advanced solutions. The yacht is a semi-wide body in the front part, but with the volumes exceptionally well integrated in the profile of the boat. Sanlorenzo adopted many sophisticated technical innovations, such as the lifting salon windows – an exclusively automotive concept so far – that allow a natural interior/exterior relation to better enjoy the seascape from a salon that becomes a terrace. The helm station on the half deck, is a concentrate of ergonomic advanced solutions with the four individually standing control system screens, and the navigator corner as on a commercial aircraft. www.sanlorenzoyacht.com

With an overall length of 80m, megayacht “Chopi Chopi” is the largest pleasure vessel ever built by CRN Yachts. Streamlined with soft lines, she has a light and airy environment, which allows the Owner to relax immediately after stepping on-board. As one of the largest yachts ever built in Italy, Chopi Chopi was launched in 2013 at CRN’s Ancona-based shipyard. She is the 129th hull built by CRN, which surpassed the previous record of 72m set by “Azteca.” The new flagship is the outcome of the integration of different skills and the fruitful cooperation between the CRN Engineering team, in charge of naval architecture, and Studio Zuccon International Project – the design firm responsible for developing her soft lines and interior layout. Upon specific request by the Owner, interior designer Laura Sessa meticulously designed the beautiful interior and furnishings. Conceived as a family house, Chopi Chopi epitomises and develops further the distinctive features, innovative character and soul of a CRN yacht. As seen in Port Hercules at the Monaco Yacht Show in September, she stands out for her immense spaciousness and a direct visual contact with the sea.

“ She is a perfect balance of classic and contemporary style, elegance and refinement with an original touch added by the use of various precious materials. ”

She is a perfect balance of classic and contemporary style, elegance and refinement with an original touch added by the use of various precious materials (wood, marble, leather, metal). At 80-metres – Chopi Chopi is a considerable size with an indoor floor area of 1,000 sq. m and an outdoor area of 800 sq. m. The interior by Laura Sessa has the utmost comfort and functionality not only for the Owner, but also for the crew. Indoor, the main deck is entirely devoted to guests and features a day area and a night area, ideally divided by the central lobby. Leaving the cockpit behind, a glazed door leads into the main salon - a pleasant, incredibly bright and spacious room furnished with four small armchairs by designer Eero Saarinen and four custommade sofas symmetrically arranged along the longitudinal axis. The wide side glazing lets through plenty of natural light, while the four sculpture-lamps designed by Hervé Van der Straeten add an artistic touch to artificial lighting. In the central part of the yacht is a large, modern-style circular lobby in pickled oak wood, which connects all decks thanks to a spacious glass lift and a stylish, imposing spiral staircase fitted with LED zenith lights and a backlit ergonomic handrail. The night area is located towards the bow and includes six double or twin ensuite VIP cabins plus a business room that, if necessary, can be converted into an additional guest cabin. This area is characterised by a careful colour selection, whereby every guest cabin comes in a specific shade. All cabins have dark stained maple and natural maple furniture,

while all bathrooms are lined in Perlatino Europa soft cream-colour marble. Wellness and fitness is an immense feature onboard Chopi Chopi. The extreme aft area of the lower deck is entirely devoted to wellness and fitness. One of the most distinctive innovations, largely appreciated by the Owners of all CRN steel and aluminium vessels, can be found in this area: the beach club. The hydraulically operated stern hatch opens up to be converted into a large (over 70 sq. m.) beach by the water, fitted with tables, loungers, and a shower. The pursuit of the utmost wellbeing continues indoor, where a small gym and a spa with sauna and massage room can be found. The spa features a Finnish sauna, a Turkish bath and a shower, all clad in carved alabaster marble, while the outer areas are in scratched Oregon Fir with lacquered finishes. Oregon Fir is also the wood chosen for the massage room floor, where it alternates with lacquered white staves. The Owner’s deck, located above the upper deck is completely private – almost a vessel within the vessel – totalling a floor area of 190 sq. m. and allowing to enjoy cruising in the utmost privacy. A large outdoor cockpit is located aft and furnished with small armchairs and a large built-in sofa, all by Glyn Peter Machin. This area can be converted into a helipad, which can only be accessed by the Owners and relatives via the lift connecting the lobbies on the various decks. Situated in a classical location, the master bedroom is at the extreme bow, offering unrivalled and glorious panoramic views of the sea. It opens onto an external deck fitted with a large Jacuzzi, sun pads, sun loungers, and a table to enjoy pleasant, intimate breakfasts. On the port side of the corridor is the spacious master bathroom in Perlatino Europa cream-colour marble, fitted with two washbasins with mirrors that conceal two portholes, as well as a large shower box and a bathtub. Just like the guest cabins, the C-shaped master suite is characterised by an ad-hoc colour shade selection: pickled oak wood harmoniously matches with the bright and yet soft shade of white, further enhanced by the indigo details of the curtains and cushions. The sun deck, which can only be reached using the lift, is a true ‘oasis’ for perfect relaxation in th open air. This 90 sq. m. area hosts, aft, a dining area with a table sitting twelve people, a barbecue, and the bar unit with alabaster marble top and, forward and sunbathing area with Jacuzzi and large sun pads. Unlike other outdoor areas found onboard, the sun deck is characterised by light, white and beige, colour shades. Chopi Chopi will reach a cruising speed of 15 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. The cruising range at a speed of 12 knots is 6,000 nautical miles.

Designed to turn heads, the breathtaking 181 ft/ 55.4m custom motor yacht Turquoise was built in 2011 by Proteksan Turquoise with exterior design by Dubois Naval Architects. Under her new owner, Turquoise has undergone a considerable interior refit in 2014. Her luxurious, contemporary interior was conceived by the award winning team at H2 Yacht Design who have been successfully shortlisted with this design for the Power Yacht Refit up to 30 metres Award at the fifth annual International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. Jonny Horsfield, Founder and Design Director of H2 comments: “The yacht was in good nick, but it was just extremely plain. It was a kind of blank canvas onto which we could create a warm, luxurious interior that would be timeless”. H2 was established in London in early 1994. Whilst the team are now involved in new-build yacht projects as well as residential projects, during the early years of the business they worked almost exclusively on yacht refit projects which gave them a broad experience of working to strict time frames in different design styles with varying budgets. During this period H2 built an enviable reputation amongst the yacht community for being the refit design experts. M/Y Turquoise’s interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 staterooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 3 double cabins, and 1 twin cabin. She carries 12 crew on board to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Elegant styling, beautiful furnishings, and sumptuous seating from The Sofa & Chair Company feature throughout her living areas to create a tactile and comfortable environment to relax in. Turquoise’s new owner approached H2 Yacht Design through a broker. The owner’s request was to refit M/Y Turquoise with a more plush look inspired by M/Y Talisman Maiton. Also designed by H2, the clients had chartered M/Y Talisman Maiton a few times and loved how she worked. The yacht was designed for charter as the owners were avid charterers prior to this purchase.

This was to help give the clients the same treatment they received previously, but in a new refreshing interior. Several changes were also made to the design in order to recreate certain areas of Talisman Maiton. The owner liked the office in Talisman Maiton, for example, and wanted this to be recreated for Turquoise, so H2 Yacht Design replicated this. The spaces, both exterior and interior, have been designed to accommodate as much human interaction as possible, creating a nice family atmosphere. The sun deck, for example, with its oversized spa pool that comfortably accommodates 12 people, offers a huge, sinuously curving relaxation area that is paved with sun pads, as well as a bar and L-shaped settees under the shade of the radar arch. The sun deck also had a major layout change, reducing the unnecessary sun bed space by adding a dining table and a bar opposite with the BBQ moved up to this deck also. In the main salon more storage was added as well as a bar, meaning a lot of joinery work had to be done during the refit by MVS Interior Contractors. This included a bar, storage, dining room feature wall, and the partition between the salon and dining area. The exterior layout of the main deck aft, which has been described as the ‘Nikki Beach area’, has been changed into an exterior cinema and lounging area. Turquoise’s impressive leisure and entertainment facilities are one of her key aspects and make her the ideal charter yacht for socialising and entertaining with family and friends. The refit was done in Italy, Genoa at Amico. Amico worked on all exterior changes and MVS & Associates were the interior contractors. As a team, the designer, yard, contractor and client have produced what anybody in the industry would consider unattainable, with M/Y Turquoise delivered in just 6 months.

“For me a design should have ‘legs’ and stand the test of time”, says Jonny. “In recent times many clients have been persuaded into extremely fashionable interiors that are not as functional Not only did the clients love how Talisman Maiton operated, but as they could be. In reality, I look forward to refitting them in the they also loved the crew, so some ex Maiton crew were brought in. next few years!”

The luxury 56m motor yacht GALAXY, built by Benetti in 2005, underwent a comprehensive refit in 2014 of the interior accommodation with modifications to the exterior in order to give a 5 star charter experience.

“ The IY&A awards promote the importance and value of good design in the enrichment of quality of life, giving suppliers, manufacturers and designers an opportunity to express their talent, celebrating individuality and originality on a prestigious platform that is synonymous with excellence. ”

Designed by Stirling & Co Designs, with feature marble by ShellShock Designs, the project has been successfully shortlisted for the Power Yacht Refit up to 30 metres Award in the fifth annual International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. Jonathan Kern, CEO of ShellShock Designs comments: “design et al has a reputation of inspiring readers with exposure to new and innovative designs. The IY&A awards promote the importance and value of good design in the enrichment of quality of life, giving suppliers, manufacturers and designers an opportunity to express their talent, celebrating individuality and originality on a prestigious platform that is synonymous with excellence.” The new owner of GALAXY wanted to build on her successful charter reputation by injecting a bright, fresh, youthful and contemporary spirit into her original high gloss timber interior. The new design was conceived to give her a new identity with a less formal interior suited to a younger and more relaxed lifestyle for groups of friends, whilst doubling as a chic party vessel for high profile events. As well as providing a neutral backdrop for his 20th Century art collection, the owner felt the calm sophisticated atmosphere needed dramatic focal features to offset the rich monochromatic textured surfaces. This includes feature marble by ShellShock Designs as well as pieces from key suppliers such as Crystal Caviar and Dudgeon Sofa. After waking up with the sun flooding through the new wide windows, the owner can enjoy breakfast in the panoramic upper deck dining room, surveying the view and planning the day: Relaxing in the mart chairs in the bright upper deck lounge, al fresco lunch in the shade on the new wired glass table, sunbathing on the helideck, descending

in the glass lift to change for cocktails at the backlit onyx bar, dinner illuminated by the warm glow of the stunning agate wall, snuggling up in the new curvy chaise longue in the owner’s cabin portholes looking down at the fish in the sea attracted by the new underwater lights 5m below, watching a movie enveloped in surround sound in the new Nikki Beach-styled private cinema, ending up on the sun deck again for a night cap under the stars at the underlit glass bar by the Jacuzzi. The design concept adopted the approach of inserting new features into the existing interior to add both interest and functionality. New white marmorino window surrounds in all areas complemented the existing maple and walnut while reflecting natural light into the interior. New inbuilt window seats maximise connection with the water giving panoramic views out. A new internally lit onyx bar on the main deck provides a new meeting point for guests (as well as a discrete host station for crew during parties) offset by an astonishing eyecatching backlit black agate wall behind the new dining table, created by Stirling & Co Designs using Black Agate supplied by ShellShock Designs. The observation lounge was re-orientated to look out - not in - and provide a haven of tranquility that can be transformed into a private cinema at the touch of a button. The use of new materials and products in the new modern interior creates bright, comfortable, flexible spaces allowing effortless change in use and mood from family to party mode by day or night supported by hugely improved service provision by the crew. Subtle changes introduced in the refit of a yacht can not only dramatically change the appearance and identity of the interior, but also radically improve the quality of life, enhancing the enjoyment of all on board by adapting the service culture to suit the ever changing needs of owners and guests.

Delivered in 2014, “Grace E” is a groundbreaking milestone for the Perini Navi Group. As the flagship of the Picchiotti motor yacht line, Grace E is also the largest motor yacht to have been delivered to date for the Viareggiobased Group.

convert to VIP suites through connecting doors. The interior décor is carried throughout the vessel through the use of highly polished ebony window trim framing the natural panoramic seascapes accented by handmade white leather Venetian sunshades.

Following on the heels of her smaller siblings – 50m Exuma and 55m Galileo G, both of which have embarked on circumnavigation voyages of their own, Grace E pushes the envelope of comfort, quality and ecoperformance to a new level in the world of mega yachting.

The wellness deck features over 238 sq. m. of interior and exterior space completely dedicated to wellness and spa activities including a 4 person Jacuzzi, massage room, beauty parlor, exercise arcade, steam bath and Hydrotherapy room with sauna, cold water plunge and jet bath. In addition there is a forward facing observatory lounge overlooking the bow to relax when done at the spa. From the Rémi Tessier design collection are four swiveling sun beds with integrated retractable hoods, two forward of the observation lounge and two aft adjacent to the Jacuzzi.

With a clear design brief, Grace E is contemporary with a warm and casually chic interior. Rémi Tessier has created a highly refined superyacht with his masterful use of material selection, surface treatment and lighting. The highly sensual interior design and assiduous use of space created a layout that is extremely functional yet supremely elegant.

“ Grace E sets a new paradigm in terms of a sensory experience aboard a large motor yacht. ”

The harmony of this palette of natural and sophisticated materials with pure timeless lines produces a relaxing ambiance and allows the Owners’ collection of contemporary Art, especially selected for the yacht to fully express itself and reflect the refined taste of the Owners. The sleek naval architecture is the work of Philippe Briand – under his Vitruvius design concept. Briand was able to deliver a hull with uncompromised efficiency by utilising a maximum waterline length, a low drag underwater hull shape and a powerful and highly economical diesel/electric power plant. The result is a superior and beautiful yacht comfortable crossing the South Seas as she is entertaining guests in Monaco.

There is also a variable speed endless pool situated on the main deck aft with two larger sun pods. The upper deck features over 170 sq. m. of open space evenly divided between an inside saloon and outside deck lounge. The two areas communicate through a massive 8m sliding glass door essentially creating one large open-air lounge. Highlighting the space is a Carrara marble top signature Sushi bar, a huge U-shaped settee, two drop down entertainment display screens, outside dining table, 2 card tables and wraparound sun settee aft. Grace E allows for relaxation in a slightly recessed and therefore protected lounging area adjacent to the aft deck with bar and informal dining. Owners and guests are exposed to wide-open exterior spaces with unencumbered panoramic views of the surroundings.

The Owners’ cabin on the main deck is a grand suite comprised of a total of 90 sq. m. It is finished with sandblasted and bleached Sycamore panels – “polished as if the wind, sand and sea had produced their texture” added Rémi Tessier. The floors are bleached Wenge and features an exquisite silk carpet. Overheads are a matt finished Palladium leaf pattern and Sycamore panels.

Grace E sets a new paradigm in terms of a sensory experience aboard a large motor yacht. She is utterly silent and motion free to the extent you do not realise she has left the dock unless you happen to look outside. The experience continues as you explore inside the yacht and the spaces envelope you with a sense of “Wellness”, both physically and emotionally.

The 12/14 guests are accommodated in 6 additional staterooms. There are two VIP guest cabins on the main deck, 2 king size staterooms and 2 twin berth (with Pullman) staterooms on the lower deck which can

With a range in excess of 7800nm at 12 kts she cruises economically at between 10-15kts with a top displacement speed of 17.5kts. This means she can cruise for months before needing to refuel her 188,000 litre fuel tanks.

Priestmangoode & The Brand Union Shortlisted in the Commercial Cabin (Economy / Business Class) Category design et al are delighted to announce shortlist success for IY&A 2013 winner, Priestmangoode and The Brand Union. This South African Airways cabin will compete in the Commercial Cabin (Economy / Business Class) Award in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. The brief for this innovative design was to create an interior language to represent South African Airways as a national carrier and, as Brand guardians for the continent, symbolising Africa. Guidelines specified that 80 per cent of the look should be inspired by contemporary South African culture and the remaining 20 per cent from the wider African continent. Following a research visit, Priestmangoode and The Brand Union distilled a plethora of details – from colours to materials, traditional crafts, local fashion and trends, and inspiring interiors – into a concise visual story, portraying expressive pattern, warm tones, and textured surfaces. www.priestmangoode.com www.thebrandunion.com 66 Luxe Et Al

Luis vidal + architects – Terminal 2 “The Queen’s Terminal”

where people can relax, enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and experience the wide range of amenities, services and retail the airport has to offer.

design et al are delighted to announce luis vidal + architects as a shortlisted company in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. The newly opened Terminal 2 “The Queen’s Terminal,” at Heathrow Airport will compete for the Airport Lounge/Terminal Award.

Natural light, acoustics, textures and colors, intuitive way finding and retail and amenities are all elements in which Vidal incorporated into the terminal to enhance the passenger experience. Consistent with many of Vidal’s previous airport designs is Terminal 2’s striking roof, soon to be an iconic image of London. Oriented to the north, it supports the environmental credentials of the building by providing a generous presence of natural light, while also benefiting from a reduction in solar gain and energy consumption.

Founder, Luis Vidal has always thought of new ways to improve airports. He added: “From my very early years at the University, I have sketched, imagined and designed solutions to improve airports; ideas to make these buildings more functional and operational for the airport authorities and airlines; ideas to enhance the passenger experience and make the well being of the passenger a priority.” Designed to be an extension of the city of London, like cathedrals of the past, Vidal intended for the terminal to be a destination in itself—an iconic building

As Heathrow’s most sustainable terminal yet, Terminal 2 reduces CO2 emissions by 40 percent compared to the buildings it replaced and will be the world’s first airport to be awarded a BREEAM EXCELLENT rating for its sustainable building design. www.luisvidal.com

Shortlist Announcement: FG stijl to Compete in the First Class Lounge Category at IY&A Awards 2015 design et al are excited to announce shortlist success for the Dutch architect firm FG stijl in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. Located at Amsterdam’s aviation hub Schiphol, SUMMUM The Private Jet Lounge will compete for the First Class Lounge Award. ‘Summum’ – the Dutch word for “summit” is the perfect name for The Netherlands’ most exclusive private jet lounge. What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? Design includes but is not restricted to aesthetical considerations. First of all it must work. In aviation it more often than not needs to support, if not enable the client’s way of life or doing business.

Lufthansa Technik, Hamburg Aircraft Interior Architect www.lufthansa-technik.com

How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?

What projects are you currently working on?

I think very important. A lot of design work in VIP aviation is confidential and that makes it harder for designers to get public recognition. That’s why it is important to include concept studies. By entering concepts studies designers have a platform to share their information advantage.

A few wide-body jets, plus also the Lufthansa “Superstar” Lockheed restoration project.

How do you relax?

A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Look for projects that you want to do. Passion creates energy.

Play one of my great blues guitars. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? Come up with arresting designs and smart solutions.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2014 and beyond. 1. Light weight Design 2. Economical Design, including easy maintenance

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself: Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Berlin. Miami.

3. Lighting in Design

Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? There are lots.

4. Completion downtime saving Design including certification aspects

The place that gives you the most energy? Relaxing at home with friends and family.

5. Design something you have not done before. Take the risk

And the place that enables you to totally relax? Home as well.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Find out as much as possible what your customer needs. Translate that into a design of lasting value.

Your favourite food and drink? I don’t have that. Anything else interesting? My favourite movie: Blade Runner. I think for designers a ‘must’.

On the 14 June 2014, in Marina Di Carrara, a 45-meter Flying Dragon yacht was floated out at the Admiral shipyard. Equipped with 3 MTU engines with a total capacity of 5.265 kW and RollsRoyce Kamewa water jets, the all-aluminium boat will easily reach 27 knots, making any port on the Mediterranean Sea close and accessible. The planing aluminium 45-meter superyacht was revealed in late September at the Monaco Yacht Show and Nakhimov Yachts have been successfully shortlisted with this design for the Power Yacht over 40 metres Award and the Power Yacht Interior Design Award in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. With interior design by Arch. Gian Marco Campanino, Michela Reverberi and Admiral Centro Stile, exterior design by Luca Dini and Admiral Centro Stile, and exterior styling by Dobroserdov Design, the yacht was built at the Admiral – The Italian Sea Group Shipyard in Italy. Sergey Dobroserdov, Director at Nakhimov Yachts and Founder of Dobroserdov Design comments on Flying Dragon’s recent shortlist success: “The IY&A Awards are important because they promote the best achievements in super yachts and aviation, encouraging companies and designers.” The Owner’s brief was to create a fast, modern yacht for world cruising. A big saloon on the main deck, a huge sundeck and a balcony in the Owner’s stateroom were among the mandatory requests. Flying Dragon’s interior layout sleeps up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms, and she is also capable of carrying up to 8 crew onboard. The four guest cabins, which include two twin cabins and two double VIPs, are designed in an oriental style, and are abound with extraordinary varieties of leather and onyx. All four guest cabins are located on the lower deck and are incredibly big for the yacht’s size, each with ensuite bathrooms finished in Carrara marbles. Comprising the full beam of the yacht with large windows and an opening balcony, the Owner’s cabin also features 3 walk-in wardrobes, Technogym in-wall equipment and a gorgeous steam room with aroma and light therapy, finished in precious onyxes. Black marble washbasins, a white onyx tub and shower and a light blue onyx wall make up the master bathroom. The yacht is a great mixture of Italian & Asian style complete with modern technologies. There are mirror TVs and a modern entertainment system with iPad and iPhone control throughout the yacht.

Ideal for socialising, the main deck features large, open entertaining spaces with full-height opening doors on the starboard side. The stern of the main deck and the massive sundeck are furnished with the best deck furniture in the world from Glyn Peter Machin. The sundeck also features a teak ceiling with yin yang logo and includes a very special light design with disco lights and a DJ booth. Key aspects of the project are its big interior volumes, modern Asian-style design and interesting exterior colour scheme complete with a dragon. This memorable dragon logo can be seen again inside the yacht, on the beautiful wall surface behind the meeting table which was created by Based Upon. Sergey Dobroserdov, who is also responsible for the yacht’s exterior styling, launched his design bureau, Dobroserdov Design in Monaco in 2010. The team design custom superyachts over 30 meters in length, and their competence includes exterior design, development of the general arrangement, design of tenders and all exterior components. The design bureau do not create interior designs, but collaborate closely with those who excel in this field, in this instance Arch. Gian Marco Campanino, Michela Reverberi and Admiral Centro Stile. For Nakhimov, the value of any yacht design rests, above all, in its aesthetics. A beautiful yacht is more than just a source of pride for its owner; it is also worth far more than vessels less remarkable in appearance. Therefore, their most pressing task during the design stage is to hone the ship concept and select an appropriate and unique yacht style. In this case, it is the striking metallic blue together with the distinctive dragon logo which sets Flying Dragon apart. Not only creating designs which are attractive, Nakhimov’s experience in the daily operation of super yachts, working with designers and marine architects, allows them to create designs that are also highly functional. In managing the ship’s design, the team strive to take into account the major trends in contemporary super yachting: maximizing personal space, integrating on-board spa and sporting amenities, and addressing environmental concerns. On their ships, beauty is reconciled with sound planning, and the now-fashionable “green” trend has a clear economic foundation. Flying Dragon will be in the Bahamas from December 2014 and Nakhimov will continue to manage the yacht and be its central charter agent. The results of the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015 will be announced at the awards ceremony in May 2015, to be held at the beautiful Hotel Cipriani, Venice.
