I am very pleased to let you know that, as of this issue, Luxe et al will be a monthly magazine. As you are aware, it was first launched in April 2011 as a back to back issue with design et al and was launched in conjunction with the first International Yacht & Aviation Awards. In December last year it became a stand alone magazine in its own right, to be published as a bi-monthly issue. To move to a monthly title is therefore very exciting for us and a great indication of positive response and feedback from the market. The April issue will be on sale next month, ahead of the annual

International Yacht & Aviation Awards Book of Shortlisted Projects, which will be published in May. With this in mind we have taken a closer look at some more of the projects short listed for this year’s Awards. It is exciting to see so many short listed projects and such growth this year. I do hope that you will be able to join us to celebrate the best in yacht and aviation design, and also the 5th anniversary of The Awards, at The Cipriani, Venice 15th May. For information about tickets or tables please contact us directly: yachts@design-et-al.co.uk Until next month Joanne

LOGICA YACHTS srl Shortlisted in the IY&A Awards 2015 LOGICA YACHTS srl have been shortlisted in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. design et al is delighted to announce the Italian Shipyard will compete with MY LOGICA for the Power Yacht over 40 metres Award. LOGICA YACHTS imagined a navetta-style vessel that was comfortable, quiet and light-filled with a rational distribution of available space — a boat designed to make the most of everything the Med has to offer.

Logica had to be as beautiful as a sailboat of equivalent length, but as roomy and comfortable as three of them. Derived from Brenta Yacht Design studio’s renowned work in sailboat design, the idea behind the yacht’s elegant exterior styling was to import the culture and values of Mediterranean sailing into the world of displacement cruising. She appeals to owners who are genuinely passionate about yachting and the sea. The design brief for MY LOGICA (Logica 147) called for a different set of criteria: comfort rather than top-speed performance and the romance of classic design combined with contemporary

appeal. At the same time, the exterior form had to be as much an expression of its function as it would for a sailing yacht. If you start from the bow and work your way backward, the design has a coherence and fluidity with no surprises or jarring elements. The key to producing a timeless design is taking something from the past and adding something from the future, which is more difficult than it sounds. www.logicayachts.com

Further Shortlist Success for Hampton Yacht Building Co. Ltd. in the IY&A Awards 2015 Hampton Yacht Building Co. Ltd. have achieved further shortlist success in the fifth annual International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. The Endurance 686 LRC Skylounge will compete for the Power Yacht up to 25 Metres Award. The Endurance 686 LRC Skylounge is a beautifully-styled, comfortable motor yacht with an efficient wide speed range; safety at sea; built and finished to a high and luxurious standard. Hampton Yacht Building Co. Ltd. have created a new form of long-range cruising yacht that has the ability to go fast as well as slow, with efficiency comparable to, or better than, other craft that operate in either of those speed ranges. The Endurance 686 is capable of long passages offshore, with safety and sea-kindliness. Stability had to meet the high US Coast Guard standard of commercial passenger vessels in ocean service. At the same time it needed to have a spacious modern motor yacht interior, rather than that of a typical trawler type yacht. Naval architecture and exterior design comes from the renowned Howard Apollonio with interior design from Sandra Roberts. www.hamptonyachts.com 12 Luxe Et Al

Studio Cichero srl Shortlisted for the Yacht Concept Over 40 Metres Award in the IY&A Awards 2015 The 163 mt new concept by Aldo Cichero breaks with the usual strategy in to day’s mega yacht design. It is for its overall design from the aesthetic and functional point of view. The external lines have no reference to other stylistic solution that have appeared on the market. The shape of the aft upper decks with the colouring of the hull and the form of the windows, simulate the dynamic effects of a luminous wake of filaments of a comet. The light plays a dominant role in the design: it combines natural and artificial lights in a unique solution for exterior and interior. There are large openable windows cut into the sides of the hull and the superstructure, which provide an extraordinary panoramic view. This mega yacht has been thought for the pleasure of long voyage and full enjoyment of the nature. Aldo Cichero thought to recreate an authentic exotic garden on board, to give the sensation of being on an island in the middle of the sea. The innovative cube on the flying bridge contains an oasis of tropical plants, inspired by ancient hanging garden with many water games.

Clear Yacht Interiors Shortlisted in the Sailing Yacht over 30 metres Award design et al is delighted to announce shortlist success for Clear Yacht Interiors (a Clear Group International Company) in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. The US-based interior design company will compete in the Sailing Yacht over 30 metres category with their project – Mari-Cha III. As an iconic sailing yacht, Mari-Cha III arrived at Derecktor Shipyards in Connecticut, for a major overhaul on a variety of items. Clear Yacht Interiors focused on completely transforming the interior wood surfaces, removing about 85% of the interior millwork, as well as designing, repairing, fabricating and installing select joinery pieces, stainless steel elements, stonework, specialty exterior fittings, upholstered items and lighting. The transformation of the interior surfaces included over 6500 hours of sanding, catalysed body filling, fairing,

priming and painting (Imron). The extent of damage on the veneer surfaces (previously wire-brushed and refinished in a white latex paint), lead to the decision of sanding all surfaces down to wood adding thousands of hours of “zen” sanding. Founder of Clear Yacht Interiors, Joyce Clear added: “The client’s main goal was to transform the interior surfaces from a “shabby chic”, dated look to a more contemporary and clean aesthetic.” This labour-intensive work achieved an overall smooth, incredibly deep luster finish with a level of perfection that exceeded expectations. The additional custom joinery, stainless steel, stone, lighting and soft goods speciality work all contributed to a minimalist-oriented design showcasing a fluid, clean décor which purposely reflected the aerodynamic, streamlined and sleek exterior of this record-setting racing vessel. www.clearyachtinteriors.net www.cleargroupintl.com

Award Winning Equanimity The Perfect Balance Oceanco by Equanimity

Luxe Et Al 27

The etymology of the word equanimity derives from the Latin aequus meaning balanced and animus meaning spirit or internal state. The concept of equanimity— internal balance— is both profound and refined. Oceanco’s newly delivered 91.5 metre Equanimity is aptly named; from her exterior to her interior to her inner core, she is perfectly well balanced.

“ The inherent oriental-inspired themes yield a montage of sumptuous materials such as wenge, gold leaf, bamboo and marbles creating an opulent and soothing ambiance that complements the Owners’ China origins. ”

Recently celebrated at both the “Best Yacht of the Year over 82m” at the 2014 World Yacht Trophies and “The Finest New Yacht of the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show”, Equanimity (Y709) has the distinction of being the industry’s first superyacht designed and built to be fully Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) compliant. Oceanco CEO, Marcel Onkenhout, says, “working together with Lloyd’s Register and Cayman Islands Shipping Registry— we designed, developed, engineered and built a magnificent yacht, which will undoubtedly set new standards in the industry.” Measuring 91.5 metres in length with a 14.5 metre beam, her chic clean exterior styling is the combined work of Oceanco and Andrew Winch Designs. Equanimity is steel hulled with an aluminium superstructure and is propelled by twin 4,828hp/3,600kW MTU 20V 4000 M73L engines, enabling her to achieve top speeds in excess of 20 knots. The breathtakingly beautiful interior has also benefitted from the quintessential touch of designer Andrew Winch. The inherent oriental-inspired themes yield a montage of sumptuous materials such as wenge, gold leaf, bamboo and marbles creating an opulent and soothing ambiance that

complements the Owners’ China origins. Andrew Winch added: “Inspired by the Client’s love of South East Asia, AWD looked to the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia for design inspiration. Sourcing a montage of sumptuous materials that include wenge wood, gold leaf detailing, bamboo finishes and exquisite marbles, AWD has created a tranquil and harmonious interior.” Equanimity provides luxury accommodation for 26 guests in a variety of flexibly configured staterooms— a magnificent master suite, with lounge, study and private exterior deck area including whirlpool; three double VIPs suites, three double guest and two twin staterooms. She has ample accommodation for 28 crew to cater to all the owners’ and guests’ desires. The grandeur of the spa and beach club is complete with sauna, hammam, experiential showers, plunge pool and multi-faceted beauty salon. The spa area leads on to a fully equipped gym and Pilates studio that can be extended through a fold down platform at sea level, creating an indoor-outdoor wellness area that is unequalled afloat. Equanimity hosts two Zodiac Fast Rescue Ribs and two 10.5metre custom Hodgdon tenders. Additionally, there is a spectacular 20m² swimming pool with jets. Providing a new benchmark in superyacht-based aviation, the upper deck boasts a fully certified helipad in accordance with CAP437 regulations as adapted for the PYC. The owners look forward to extensive world travel aboard their distinctive luxury vessel.

What is your job title?

Where does the process being and end?

Design Director

We start from the moment we first visit the client and until the yacht is launched; even then we remain in contract for anything else that we can help with as the client starts to enjoy living aboard.

How does working on the interiors of yachts differ from other projects? Yachts require much more detail and integration with its surroundings, being in a restricted space and environment. Also everything is much closer and so people give more inspection to the finishes. What is the most fabulous yacht you have worked on? A 155 meter royal yacht. How did you get into doing the interiors of yachts? Meeting the interior designer John Munford whom mentored me in his studio. What items in a yacht is it essential to splurge on? Sofas’ and special finishes that really define the comfort and special surfaces that create the atmosphere of spaces. Where and how does the process for decorating the interior of a yacht begin? We start by listening to the client’s brief and expression of their vision and influences to understand their lifestyle in order that we try to feel the same expressions as our client when making decisions. The more information and tastes we can identify from our client, the more we can understand their vision and give a holistic approach in harmony with their character. What elements and stages are involved in the process? Firstly a well prepared layout plan and theme boards identifying the style elements. This is followed by preliminary colour sketch visuals to describe rooms before reviewing with our client and making final accurate visuals. At this stage we would also be presenting samples of hardware, surfaces and fabrics’ to establish the colours and textures involved.

34 Luxe Et Al

Redman Whiteley Dixon Design Director www.rwd.co.uk

How common is it to go with bespoke items against out of the catalogue? This varies according to each individual client, but often we have some bespoke items made specifically to link with the yacht because they are so personalized due to their close involvement in the design. What are your five must-have elements/features you would advise for someone to opt for when decorating a yacht? - Use original and natural materials as much as possible. - Include some Bespoke furniture elements and feature walls. - Use a Specialist lighting consultant. - Maximize the light penetration into the yacht through all decks so as not to feel buried in the hull. What design elements would you suggest for creating a stylish interior of a yacht? - Set out the room proportions first of all and work out how to make it exciting. - Don’t make the scheme too overcrowded or you may loose the effect you are trying to create. - Blend colours tonally but add some contrast in places for feature excitement. - Establish a focal point to each room. Lastly, what does luxury mean to you? A relaxing environment with lots of beautifully detailed furniture, surfaces and fabrics that show their craftsmanship. What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? I do not think you can say we follow any one direction. We are inspired and influenced by so many variables including our client own characteristics and desires, let alone each designer’s individual take on everything.

“ A masterpiece of distinctive design, she is an incredible combination of linear tautness and expressive lines, conveying both balance and energy. ”

Once again Overmarine Mangusta have produced a superyacht, the Mangusta 165 e “Moonraker”, worthy of the international acclaim she has received since she made her official appearance at the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show.

of wood, coloured veneers and lacquering have been used, at least 10 different kinds of marble, amongst which the highly prestigious Blue Tiger Eye. Accommodation is provided for the Owner and 10 guests, with cabins enough for10 crew.

“Moonraker” is the 9th yacht of Mangusta 165 series delievered in less than 5 years. This model is currently the fastest Open Maxi Yacht in the world, in her category, measuring 50 metres in length and able to reach even a speed of 40 knots, made possible by the featured engine power train.

Great importance is given to natural light. Five skylights over the dining room table and the new side window, a large single pane of glass, brings copious amounts of light indoors, but also guarantees a breathtaking view and increased perception of space. Guests can enjoy an uninterrupted dialogue with the great outdoors.

A masterpiece of distinctive design, she is an incredible combination of linear tautness and expressive lines, conveying both balance and energy. Her on-board volumes can be compared with a 3 deck yacht of the same size. Working seamlessly to produce this ‘evo’ aesthetics (evolution) dynamic design was the designer Stefano Righini and the shipyard’s Design Department. The impact of the yacht viewed from the stern is truly remarkable. The new structure has been lengthened by approximately one metre and a half making it possible to integrate the large divan and the steel handrail perfectly into the superstructure, creating an effect of lightness and sleekness. The inclusion of the grill reminiscent of a supercar enhances the drive dynamic. With its strength and power “Moonraker” loses none its luxury or comfort. Process control, the excellence of the composite structures used, soundproofing, vibration control and ergonomic layouts, everything has been studied in painstaking detail in order to guarantee quality, excellence and well-being on board at high speeds. Stepping on board you are transported into a sophisticated world of fine materials, lacquering and colour: over 15 different kinds

The ceilings, featuring an innovative led bar lighting system, are mother-of-pearl white lacquering; the elegant wooden parquet is made of smoked oak painted custom grey and the side walls are white leather. The furniture is all customized and lacquered night blue and black matched with customfinished pama wood, whilst the lunch table is rosewood which has been painted. The interior volumes are echoed by the truly incredibly outdoor spaces which are ideal for the owner and his family for relaxing in real comfort: the stern cockpit opens with a lounge area that can be protected by an awning and is separated from the dining area with a unit with a retractable TV clad in artic white marble. At bow, there is a real Mediterranean lounge club with cushions and jacuzzi, that can be protected from the sun with an awning, plus a large sunbathing area. Overmarine added: “The Owner requested the Mangusta lines be interpreted in a more aggressive, ‘muscular‘ fashion. He had a clear vision, expression of his personality and wishes which the shipyard, with its in-depth experience in building dreams, has been able to turn into what can only be described as a truly unique yacht.”

In December 2010 Finot-Conq Architectes won the internationally contested challenge to respond to the Owner’s design brief to create a superyacht with proportions that would set it apart from todays’s 100 footers landscape. With more 40 years of experience and numerous race victories and design awards to their credit, Finot-Conq has more than 40,000 boats built from their designs all around the world. Their designs are innovative, reliable, fast and beautiful.

“ The pinnacle in the design vision was a 360° panoramic view to the sea from the dining room and saloon. ”

The challenge was to provide first class accommodation for 12 guests and 3-4 crew, with at least 16sqm for the owner’s cabin and ample headroom throughout, in a very fast yacht. The aim was that the cockpit should also be able to host a party for at least 50 persons. And the yacht should sail very close to her maximum speed at a comfortable cruising heel angle of 12° or less, with a sail optimized for the Mediterranean light airs. To attain this goal the yacht is a real “Open” typed boat, with a wide chined hull. The lifting keel allows a deeper draft while sailing. The boat is entirely made of carbon, with Nomex interiors, to keep displacement at a minimum. The mast rises to greater than 46 metres above the waterline, and features runners that allow for a square-top

58 Luxe Et Al

mainsail. Lateral waterballasts, of more than 9 tons each side, increase the boat’s power and limit the heel. The helm is well balanced and reactive; the boat accelerates with the lightest puff. The pinnacle in the design vision was a 360° panoramic view to the sea from the dining room and saloon. This guest cockpit just aft of the low deckhouse allows guests enjoy smooth cruising in elegant Italian style. The owner’s and guests cabins (all but one) are located in front of this saloon. Aft, there is another guest cabin, a technical compartment, the galley, and a comfortable living area for the crew, with a mess, two cabins and two bathrooms. The interiors were built by Maxi Dolphin and designed by Pierre Forgia/Finot Conq, are best appreciated within the main saloon that is light, cool and minimalistic. The monochrome colour scheme is contemporary with vibrant red accents. The unique styling is continued throughout creating a strong sense of character. The result is a bold sailing yacht that is light, powerful and stylish, an impressively fast vessel that has not compromised on on-board comfort or handling capabilities. It has comfort and luxury as it’s core, this is a superyacht of excellent quality and finesse.

Flying Reimagined Etihad Airways “The Apartments” First Class Cabin by Acumen Design Associates

66 Luxe Et Al

Luxe Et Al 67

68 Luxe Et Al

Luxe Et Al 69

It has been 5 years in the making, and with greatest commitment to cabin interior product design made by any airline in the world, Etihad Airways have created a groundbreaking product which redefines all classes of flight.

EDC was asked to develop an overall vision for the aircraft based on the airline’s successful ‘Inspired Service’. The vision was to bring the individuality and exclusivity of a ‘Luxury Boutique hotel experience – that embraced Arabian modernism’.

It began in 2008 when Etihad Airways embarked on a search for a leading design agency partner to design the future cabin interiors for their new fleet of A380 (and latterly B787) aircraft.

Since the development of the seat-to-bed products in the mid 90’s, little has changed to transform the basic layout and approach to first class suite design. First Class products are mostly forward facing seats with furniture built around them – usually configured as a 1:2:1 twin aisle layout on a wide bodied aircraft.

Etihad Airways have always stated its ambition to be the ‘Best airline in the World’, and outlined a vision for the project that would build on their success and continue to redefine airline travel. This meant that they wanted to disrupt the status quo in the industry and create a unique Guest experience that would reflect the exciting vision of Abu Dhabi. After a global pitch, Etihad Airways asked three agencies to work together to deliver

“ These new living spaces will raise the inflight product and service standards to their highest level yet in commercial aviation and alter air travellers. ”

The First Apartments come equipped with an adjustable 24-inch flat screen TV, which can be viewed from the armchair or while relaxing in bed, together with a vanity cabinet with ample lighting and space for personal effects, a chilled drinks cabinet and a wardrobe.

– James Hogan, President

their challenging ambition. The EDC – Etihad Design Consortium – was created bringing together three companies, Acumen Design Associates, Factorydesign and Honour Branding. Acumen design was chosen to design the on-board seating across First Class, Business and Economy. Factorydesign was tasked to design the passenger experience and cabin interiors such as galleys, lavatories and passenger destination zones. Honour Branding’s role was to coordinate the project and interface with Etihad. They were also to advise Etihad on the innovation process and define strategy for the concept work.

70 Luxe Et Al

Fundamentally, the single aisle (1:1) of ‘The Apartments’ is completely unique and different to any product that has gone before, with real room-like proportions, offering a separate seat and bed without compromise to either, and corridor of floor-space allowing dynamic passenger movement around the suite. This provides the passenger more choice in how and where they relax, eat, sleep and even entertain other guests. A particularly special item in the First Class suite is the bed. It is 80.5” long and 26.5” wide and is entirely separate from the seat. It is covered in Poltrona Frau Leather, with dress cover stitch-detailing, jointly developed with their Ferrari interior designed Luca Bellomari and his team. Its function is spectacular as it doubles as a two piece divan style sofa when the suite is in lounge-mode yet powers down using a custom designed mechanism into a flat-bed for night time. It is an industry first in all of these ways, and is a fundamental element in the success of the suite design – it even doubles as a powered ottoman for the seated passenger.

In 6 of the 9 suites, the passengers can even open up the suites into doubles creating a spectacular space. The increased storage space has allowed the overhead bins to be removed and pave the way for the highest privacy walls in the sky – giving the unique architectural feel to the cabin. James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ President and Chief Executive, said: ‘These new living spaces will raise the inflight product and service standards to their highest level yet in commercial aviation and alter air travellers’ expectations of inflight comfort and luxury forever.’ It is an un-rivalled First-Class space and experience. Flights started to operate from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow from December 2014.

“ The balance between the 5 colours and the perfect fading effect. The homogeneity between the vertical lines on the drift and the powerful horizontal design featured on the engines. ”

Designed to deliver ultimate comfort, speed and range, the Bombardier Global 5000 is unrivalled in its class, with exceptional cabin space, technologies and aesthetics. This particular aircraft, is a Global 5000 with a striking and unseen livery, exclusively developed and designed by Happy Design Studio. As winner of the Private Aviation Design category at the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014, this livery design further enhances the Global 5000’s reputation as a graceful aircraft with outstanding levels of performance. Based in the eastern French city of Strasbourg, Happy Design Studio is the conception of CEO and Founder, Didier Wolff. With a portfolio which extends from private jets to commercial aircraft, the studio has also completed designs for military jets and helicopters. The extraordinary livery of this Global 5000 provided the ultimate aircraft design and painting challenge for Happy Design Studio. The whole exterior design concept is born from a ceramic tile detail which compliments the aircraft’s interior and luxurious table ware set. As one of the most complex designs painted onto an aircraft today, the search for a workshop to take on this challenge was vitally important. Didier added: “Finding the right paint workshop to take up the technical challenge was a key aspect because there has never been a livery of this kind painted in such a short time frame. Grounded time had to be no more than 6 weeks and no less than 10 were required to perform the task.” With paint supplied by AzkoNobel, the livery is comprised of 5 colours each supporting a fading effect from the front door to the last window – the aircraft reveals its design details only when approaching for boarding. A series of 150 vertical and 6 stripes set from 6mm to 3 cm, coat the entire body gracefully appearing from window to window, from white to full colour. The engines stand

with the same striping and fading effect but features a horizontal design, with absolute precision shaping the lines around the irregular barrel form of the nacelles. Asked about why the livery works so well, Didier stated: “The balance between the 5 colours and the perfect fading effect. The homogeneity between the vertical lines on the drift and the powerful horizontal design featured on the engines.” Didier concedes the aviation industry is a rather mild, conservative and shy business, so he was delighted to take on a project which provided such freedom – the Bombardier Global 5000 livery. “When such a freedom is given to a designer to create what even paint experts state as impossible at first glance, recognition of such creativity and audacity is essential to help change the minds for all owners and constructors, to show how design has a full field of existence also on the aircraft exterior appearance.” After successfully winning the Private Aviation Design category at the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014 with this innovative livery, Happy Design Studio have demonstrated their immense capabilities in aircraft exterior design. In reference to the IY&A Awards, Dider said: “The bar is set high between participants and most of the short listed projects are really inspiring me. The International Yacht and Aviation Awards are an opportunity to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with a different family of talented designers.” Happy Design Studio are currently working on a selection of designs which are all highly confidential. Didier hopes to continue with the design of unique and unseen livery designs: “I aim to extend Happy Design Studio France’s creations and services towards the most audacious, free and even eccentric clients.”

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms?

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

My feelings are mixed.

Find the story and stay with the theme. Don’t get caught in the web of evolution design if avoidable.

1) In general terms there seems to be an excessive focus on keeping up with cabin management control systems and inflight entertainment. This leads to point in time design and engineering. Far too often the environment is compromised by unsightly devices that look sophisticated today but are old tomorrow. 2) Another trend is timeless environmental design which adapts to new technology without compromising the aesthetic ergonomics of the cabin and its precious materials. This #2 being my preference. Name key themes to consider when approaching design in 2015 and beyond. Comfort – It’s about the customer and how they feel in the cabin. Comfort is physical and subliminal. Timeless – Create spaces that won’t look old in 5 years. Personalized – How the interior is setup with maximum flexibility to interchange materials and configurations.

A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? If you can make a career out of what you love to do then it becomes easier; however, a work life balance must be maintained. Family and spiritual interests must come first and then the rest falls into place. Often easier said than done but clearly a mission for me to focus on. How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? The International Yacht and Aviation Awards are an important avenue for design recognition and exposure. To be recognized by industry experts is an honor that all appreciate. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself The car you drive? 2002 Toyota Sequoia, Saving $$ for the car I really want.

And key trends that we should be aware of? Work Life / Private life overlap. Personal and work life are becoming one for those whose travel needs necessitate a private jet. In this way it is vital that the two are allowed to coexist at all times. What projects are you currently working on? Unfortunately I am not at liberty to say specifically what is being covered at this time. However, there are several unique projects like Skyacht One and Boat International’s Lineage that keep us moving the pin further ahead.

Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Laguna Beach CA. The place that gives you the most energy? The place that gives me the most energy is Southern CA. The feeling of endless optimism and passion for life make it an addicting place to be. The sense of environmental protection is also an important factor in keeping fresh with ideas. And the place that enables you to totally relax? I don’t relax – Just ask my wife.
