IMPOSSIBLE IS JUST A DARE. At Embraer, we find inspiration in the greatest of challenges. The creation of entirely new aircraft, and categories. And the inclusion of technology previously unavailable in aircraft this size. The better way. The efficient way. The unconventional way. You see, we’ve never been ones to settle for the status quo. And we’re looking for those who share a similar mindset and are willing to act upon it. Because we believe for those who do — doing the impossible is just the beginning.
Rethink Convention.

Ocean Alexander have always celebrated their sense of adventure with unorthodox collaborations in pursuit of building safe and beautiful boats. This sense of cooperation extends back to the very beginning of the company, when the unlikely duo of Taipei businessman Alex Chueh met Seattle-bred naval architect Ed Monk, Jr., on Washington’s Bainbridge Island in 1978. The two men recognized in each other a similar vision, and shortly set about turning out a high-quality line of yachts built in Taiwan. The boatbuilder’s latest creation, the Ocean Alexander 112’, is the jewel in the crown of Ocean Alexander’s evolution and is another example of the success Ocean Alexander achieves when they think outside the box.
“It’s common for many builders to keep design and engineering in-house to save on costs amongst other reasons. We feel this line of thinking prohibits them from building the best boats possible. If all of the ideas are contained within a sector, it becomes harder to think outside of the box. ”
The Ocean Alexander 112 Tri-Level Motoryacht is a culmination of decades of yacht-building experience with worldrenowned marine talents at the top of their fields. The 112’ is designed by Evan K. Marshall, naval architects based in london, widely recognised for his custom designs of several megayachts. While the engineering was completed by Gregory C. Marshall, award-winning architect based in Victoria, Canada. Her interior design was handled by the Italian Roberto Lottini, and her electrical work was done by US based Polaris Marine. Richard Allender, Director of US Operations said, “It’s common for many builders to keep design and engineering in-house to save on costs amongst other reasons. We feel this line of thinking prohibits them from building the best boats possible. If all of the ideas are contained within a sector, it becomes harder to think outside of the box. By building these relationships with the world-renowned designers and firms, we are creating ideas through collaboration that are innovative and the will set the bar higher in the industry.” “When you step on board the Ocean Alexander 112’, you’ll see the difference for yourself. We’ve taken our alliance with Evan K. Marshall to a different level. The new 112’ lets light pour in, opens interiors in entirely
16 Luxe Et Al
new ways and beautifully reflects how owners and their guests really use a boat: for privacy, luxury and intimate entertaining.” The new 112’ Tri-Level from Ocean Alexander features five staterooms including a fullbeam master on the main deck, very rare in a boat of this size. The full-beam master has a large seating area along with a spacious vanity as well as a small night-head for the owner’s’ convenience. The master head, located forward, has a full-sized Jacuzzi tub with separate shower and his-and-her walk-in closets. The full-beam master will be a private oasis for the owner and will be very hard to find in this grand style on other yachts of comparable size. This yacht will also include formal dining with seating for 10 along with al fresco dining on the aft deck with the expansive table and settee. The crew quarter arrangements allows from four to six, depending on the configuration. The skylounge provides an additional living/entertaining area with seating for 8-10, a game table and opens to the immense boat deck. Exterior settees and Lounge Pads provided by Sunbrella. The boat deck, being one of the largest found on this size, includes an oversized bar, bar taps provided by Dornbracht, an enormous settee and table along with a hot tub. With all of these amenities, it still maintains a generous floor area for ease of access to all areas on the deck. The pilothouse forward has side doors leading out to a Portuguese bridge to help facilitate docking and provides panoramic views. The Bridge deck and sun deck provide enormous space and possibilities for entertainment for the owner and their guests. The 112 accommodates 10, owner/guests and six crew in its original configuration, but Ocean Alexander have made it highly adaptable to the way the owner prefers to entertain. A few simple adjustments in the salon can change the full bar from circular seating to a big starboard view. However you see it, the new 112 is a bright new star in the firmament of megayachts.

Explorer Yacht Storm, a Darwin Class 107, is the glorious product of a collaboration between shipbuilders Cantiere delle Marche of Ancona, Italy, Exterior Designer: Hydrotec – Cantiere delle Marche, Naval Architect: Hydrotec - Cantiere delle Marche, and the Interior Designer: PFA & Partners srl Pierluigi Floris Architetto and Aldo Ferraro, for an owner who intends to be at sea for four months of the year with his family. This refit was extensive. The project involved many customisations required by the expert ship-owner. Great attention was been paid to the crew quarters that are furnished following the same theme as the VIP areas, for a total of four cabins on board.
“ The build of this yacht was exciting in every respect: the synergy between shipowner and crew, the goals shared by them and the whole design team, and the driving force created by a common passion for the explorer ship and the quality of the construction details has created a very special ship. ”
The already spacious areas were designed and re-proportioned in height, exceeding the already excellent standards that are the norm for all explorer yachts in the Darwin Class. The interior height allowance was increased to 2,18m (very unique for a 100foot superyacht) and consequently, all of the doors and windows were revisited to accommodate the new height. The interior decor and style is characterised by a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with the use of walnut wood tones, wallpapers, leathers and other luxury materials used to create an inviting ambience. The Owner’s stateroom received particular attention and is spread over the entire beam of the yacht. Here a highly original solution for connecting the sleeping area with the bath and the dressing area has been created. In the main deck is located the living room which is particularly large, thanks to the fact that the yacht is 7.70 meters wide, and which connects to the dining area with kitchen. The kitchen is an informal area, also for the ship-owners. It is incredible in size, comparable to kitchens in yachts of 45/48 meters long. The lounge of the main deck is spacious and light, particularly abundant in this environment thanks to large windows, which are decorated with full-length curtains like in a normal luxury house. On the upper deck is the hall, designed primarily for entertainment and equipped with a large “L” shaped sofa and handmade chairs. At the bow is the great handmade helm, characterised by a curved dashboard that follows the line of the windows, with three comfortable pilot armchairs. Aft there is a
24 Luxe Et Al
sofa, to enjoy the expansive view afforded from this location of the ship, during the navigation experience. An unexpected and very interesting feature is the presence of a radio room adjacent to the bridge, which is particularly unusual for boats this size. While keeping all the features of the pure Darwin Class style, this 102’ features a series of unique customisations, both in regard to function and design. One of the new features is a fully-equipped gym area in order for the owner and the guests to be able to keep up with the daily routines even out at the sea. Careful attention was paid to the layout of the garage, which is equipped for and designed to hold a variety of water toys and transportation vehicles, as well as host a complete diving centre. Pierluigi Floris - PFA & Partners chose refined combinations: the walnut wood and the panelled walls, with either fabric or leather covers. The result is a boat with a classic maritime mood, obtained through the style for the combination of colours and fabrics and through quality materials, processed by skilled craftsmen who have perfected the boat like a tailored suit. All of these components evoke the Italian design which informed the entire interior design scheme. The build of this yacht was exciting in every respect: the synergy between shipowner and crew, the goals shared by them and the whole design team, and the driving force created by a common passion for the explorer ship and the quality of the construction details has created a very special ship. There is a perfect balance between its operational and leisure functions. Darwin Class 107 yacht has absorbed all the updates introduced on the new Darwin 86 and 102 boats, which include a more balanced longitudinal profile for a more contemporary style, the increased window surface, lowered gunwale for a closer contact with the sea. From the technical point of view, the Darwin 107 is the direct development of smaller models and takes into account the feedbacks from the navigation experience of the six preceding models that have already sailed thousands of miles, robust in their design the Darwin Class are built for long range cruising and ocean voyages.

“ Every single space, furniture and accessory has been redesigned following handcrafted methods and using the finest materials in a combination of functionality, class and style. ”
EIGHT was launched in 2005 and her refit represents a true accomplishment for Rome based Solido Interiors. She was designed by CRN’s Engineering Department in collaboration with the international design studio Nuvolari Lenard, who has taken care of the exteriors. The vessels spreads over four magnificent decks, offering accommodation in one sumptuous master stateroom and five VIP suites, hosting up to 12 guests and a crew of 8. The refit of 46 metre EIGHT was designed to accomplish the owners’ dreams and desires; the brief was to create a layout that would allow the enjoyment of wide and bright spaces, in order to ensure a close connection with the external environment. The owner was smart and very clear of their requirements, with a passion for technology and innovation, and a strong bond with the sea, considering it to be a boundless field of exploration but a familiar and friendly place at the same time. Spaces have a contemporary and original décor, leitmotif of the different areas, characterized by extremely clean and harmonious lines but, at the same time, powerful and sophisticated, in the clever combination of wood and fine leathers, glasses assembled with inner copper foils, metal finely processed and rare marbles. The interiors perfectly flow with the exterior areas, and provide dynamic, yet complete continuity between the outside and the inside. Some areas have been completely redesigned, taking down some of the walls and partitions to enlarge each area and bring in light and more liveability. The deck area aft of the main saloon provides a comfortable leisure area, boasting four dark grey sofas with red profiles and a coffee table. From here, a sliding glazed door invites guests into the comfortable main saloon. Three large sofas are placed around a large and elegant carpet and two coffee tables, where guests can comfortably socialise or unwind. A double-face Samsung 78’’ concealing TV divides the living area from the large round dining table seating up to 10 people for a more formal dining experience. All windows have been enlarged, letting plenty of natural light flood this area and highlight the combination of the warm shades of walnut on the walls and the cream shade of the furniture. The master cabin, situated on the main deck at the bow, is a masterpiece of sobriety and simplicity, reflecting the style that pervades the entire yacht. The Owner’s apartment is preceded by a cosy business area, where the
34 Luxe Et Al
Owner can work enjoying maximum comfort and privacy. The use of soft colour shades, that range from hazelnut brown to cream and alternate in the fabrics, the furniture, and throughout the vessel provide luxurious warmth. The bathroom too features a skilful play with colours, interspersing warm oak wood and the dark colour of the mottled stone of the bathtub with hydromassage and chromotherapy. The bathroom is also fitted with a ‘his & her’ double sink and a shower box. The electrical darkening glass system guarantees maximum brightness and privacy at the same time. An elegant internal staircase with leatherlined steps leads to the lower deck, which hosts the comfortable guest area and the crew quarters. The fitness area, which was previously found to port, has been replaced by an additional cabin, which joins the other 3 located on the same deck. The main changes at the stern have involved the garage, which has been widened so as to fit the Owner’s tender, a Castoldi 23’, and which, once the tender has been launched, can be turned into a large beach club. This area is now even more enjoyable and also features a shower area, with the shower head in the ceiling and the shower mat on the deck. The flooring has been replaced to ensure continuity with the warm shades of the outdoor teak. At the aft of the upper deck, a wide sky lounge is furnished with two comfortable L-shaped sofas that make this area ideal to enjoy dinner with a magnificent view over the sea, thanks to the large rectangular table seating up to 10 people. In the indoor salon, a wonderful C-shaped sofa stands opposite a concealing up-and-down Samsung 75” TV. The refitting in this area has involved the enlargement of the windows, allowing more natural light in flood in and offers a breathtaking view of the sea. An external staircase takes guests to the sundeck, a fabulous area where life in the open air can be enjoyed to the fullest and featuring a round table in polished teak with eight satin teak chairs in the middle, ideally dividing this area into two separate ones. Indeed, two large sunbathing areas and two awnings with carbon poles have been positioned on the sundeck: the first is at the extreme stern and features one single rectangular sunpad in dark grey fabric with red profiles, as well as two polished teak round tables; the second area, at the bow, shows the result of a more extensive refitting – a Teuco hydromassage tub. The sunpad and the entire sundeck are protected by handrails with steel and glass uprights.
On the sides of the central table, a flat screen TV, an ice-maker, a refrigerator, and a barbeque complete the furnishings. The forward structure where navigation lights were previously installed has been replaced with a removable carbon mast that has been installed slightly closer to the stern. An accurate lighting design was installed throughout to transform, improve and add value to the various areas and to the surrounding structure. Everything helps to create a perfect continuity between natural and artificial, external and internal, domestic and marine dimension, in a place where the owner is left to establish his own boundaries. Eight interiors are characterized by chromatic, neutral, plain tones, which create the relaxing atmosphere that reigns on the decks, giving uniformity to spaces and emphasizing the search for minimalism and sophistication that led all the choices in the project implementation. EIGHT represents the balance between functionality and luxury, tradition and innovation. Its success arises from a shared passion, love, and working with people on the same wavelength. Carlo Nuvolari from Nuvolari Lenard said “EIGHT was a fortunate project which we built at CRN. It is part of the ‘Magnifica’ class, which was built in a few units. We were asked to design a timeless boat but not timeless because ‘classic’ or ‘old’ style. I believe EIGHT shows to have a beauty that is not related to her age. The matching between superstructure and hull is completely achieved in this design. This ‘matching’ is what we always carefully look for when designing a yacht and what is dictating its success or its debacle. It is imperative for Nuvolari Lenard that the yacht is a ‘unicum’; not just a hull with some superstructure on top. Hull and superstructure must ‘talk’ together. The balance and proportions must be there or you will have a yacht, not a ‘nice yacht’”. Every single space, furniture and accessory has been redesigned following handcrafted methods and using the finest materials in a combination of functionality, class and style. The uniqueness of the project has proved to be successful in the match between past and future. The use of natural light, wood, fine-quality leather, and other bespoke materials have transformed EIGHT into a truly spectacular vessel. The collaboration of CRN, Nuvolari Lenard and Solido Interior Design have created a timeless object away from passing trends and styles.
Refit which Creates Balance and Improves Performance Seven Sins by Balk Shipyards

This luxurious tri-level 41m Heesen Yacht was launched in April 2005. In 2015, when it came time for a re-fit Heesen called on its Dutch neighbour Balk Shipyard to complete the job. This was the sixth collaboration between the two companies. This refit has been one of the most complex that Balk Shipyard has ever undertaken. And yet, it only involved around a third of the actual yacht. It is believed that no other yard has ever attempted to remove a bow section in order to extend the yacht by nearly two and a half metres. Seven Sins’ bow was cut off and replaced by a completely new bow of 15 metres, which added 2.3 metres to the yacht. When Seven Sins came to the Balk premises, her new bow was ready to be attached. It took six men an entire month to attach the new bow to the existing hull and it fitted perfectly.
“ It is believed that no other yard has ever attempted to remove a bow section in order to extend the yacht by nearly two and a half metres. Seven Sins’ bow was cut off and replaced by a completely new bow of 15 metres, which added 2.3 metres to the yacht. ”
There was more to the refit than just adding a new bow. Within the interior of the bow Balk built four brand-new crew cabins, multiple storage areas, a crew mess and a laundry. Everything was prefabricated and fitted in the hall, then taken apart again in order to get it on board. The extension added a total of 2.3 metres to Seven Sins, giving her a total length of 43.60 metres. Balk’s dedicated paint division ensured that Seven Sins looked as good as new when she left the yard. An interesting project by any standards, the fact that Seven Sins also had to comply with the new Large Yacht 3 code by the time she was relaunched speaks volumes for the expertise required and the enormous cooperation between all the many parties involved. Frank Laupman of Omega Architects said “Seven Sins was 40m and extended to 43m at the bow. The owner wanted to update her exterior to contemporary proportions. We wanted to update her exterior with an extended foredeck, and pleasing overall proportions.” “The extended hull length, as a result, brought the fuel consumption down by 15%. Extra interior space in the bow is always a benefit appreciated by the crew. And last but not least: her top speed increased from 13 to 14.5 knots. The owner loves his yacht, which charters in the Caribbean.” “Designers at Omega Architects, naval architects at Van Oossanen Naval Architecture and the builder Balk Shipyard closely collaborated, making Seven Sins a great example of what the Dutch can deliver together.”
40 Luxe Et Al
Seven Sins is now more in balance. Her former bow was relatively small compared to the yacht itself. She now has a bulbous bow which allows her better fuel consumption and better overall performances. Her brandnew bow makes Seven Sins look better than when she was first launched in 2005. The owner and her architects had always had mixed feelings about her previous bow, feeling that it did not have quite the right aesthetic feel for a yacht of Seven Sins’ calibre. After the rebuild process was completed, the yacht offered a great deal more space for the crew, water and storage. The interior design features beautiful semi-gloss cherry wood panelling and a teak and ebony parquetry floor, whilst Makassar furniture adds an exotic touch. From stepping on board via the aft deck the spacious main saloon, fitted with comfortable sofas and tables, also offers a bar area as well as a sitting area incorporating a 50inch Plasma TV screen. The open dining room can seat 10 guests comfortably around the oval table. Ten large side windows allow an exceptional exterior sea view throughout. The circular foredeck owner’s stateroom includes a study with internet connections and printer, a walk-in dressing room, bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and separate large marble shower and toilet. The atmosphere of the master suite is fresh and harmonising beige, maple and cranberry themes. Two full beam VIP, plus two comfortable twin staterooms, all with en suite shower and/or marble bathrooms, complete the accommodation. The upper deck interior saloon has an Oriental feel and can be used as an extremely comfortable cinema saloon with 60” plasma TV. Lunch or dinner can be taken either on the upper deck (table for 12) or on the Jacuzzi sun deck (table for 10), which is also equipped with sun pads. All tenders are stored in the garage which houses a sauna. Cutting of the bow was a key aspect of the Seven Sins project. It was exciting and frightening as well. Daan Balk CEO, of Balk Shipbuilders commented: ‘The moment we finished grinding through Seven Sins and I could see the wires and pipes of the stateroom suspended in mid-air, it reminded me of that moment when you come home and find the dog has trashed the entire living room!’ Furthermore the end result is just astonishing and puts Seven Sins to a whole new level.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? In my opinion, environments should be comfortable, cozy, and supported by new technologies. In addition to Luxury, I truly believe that with contemporary design we are looking for a psychological well-being, in order to feel that “want to come back” sensation. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. • Environment and innovative materials • Class and elegance • Technologies • Research • Style And key trends that we should be aware of? I believe that following trends is interesting in order to see how societies taste is moving. However, I prefer to get inspiration from the personal style that the future house-owner has. Moreover, I think that every expression of art may be constructive for the realization of a project. What projects are you currently working on? Today I am working on various projects: • Renovation of a 15th century building included interior design of its luxury apartments. Piazza Borghese, Rome-Italy • Interior design for Private Residence at Via Condotti, Rome- Italy • Interior design for Executive office at Piazza di Spagna, Rome- Italy • Concept Project for luxury apartments, HangzhouChina • Interior design for Private Villain Capri- Italy If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Personally, I draw inspiration from my clients, therefore I suggest to enter in their personal lives, as well as to understand what they like and why. These are generally the first things I do when I want to start an outstanding design scheme. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Fortunately, among women’s main characteristic,
42 Luxe Et Al
Solido Interior Design Chief Executive Officer
there is a natural sense of organization, which helps to match job and personal life. Furthermore, when I travel, whether for business or leisure, I try to involve my family because I believe that comparison is a great source of inspiration. How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? IY&A awards are very important because give the opportunity to join the competition and possibly being awarded for the hard work. They also give the motivation to improve. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? My primary aim is to complete the projects I am working on, in order to be able to undertake new ones. It should be exciting design a new yacht from the beginning. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself: The car you drive? Bmw i3 eco friendly. Technology looking after Planet. Your favourite place to travel to in the world? I love all the sea places. Your favourite hotel? “ The choice of materials was driven by the owner’s desire to totally relax on board in natural, low-key ambiance with a hint of tradition. ”
The yacht was delivered in 15 months, which is a great success of the boatyard. During the hot works and steel construction, each sections of the interior were manufactured and assembled at the mock-up area which saved at least 5 months from the construction period. The choice of materials was driven by the owner’s desire to totally relax on board in natural, low-key ambiance with a hint of tradition. Particular attention was paid to the upholstery detailing and textiles. A combination of linen, alcantara, and leather was used throughout the yacht. Bombardier’s Challenger Completion Centre in Montreal is an ultra-modern facility that boasts the highest quality and breadth of expertise, technology and fabrication methods. The centre is equipped with advanced 3-D design software, including texture mapping and pattern flattening, and a modelling and digital animation program for industrial and interior design. It is here that the new cabin design for the Challenger 650, inspired by Bombardier Business Aircraft’s new product design language, has been created. The Challenger 650 aircraft redefines the ‘ultimate in-flight experience’. Its widest inclass cabin has been completely redesigned to offer even greater comfort and productivity – a superior creative masterwork inspired by the design of the Challenger 350 aircraft featuring attractive fluid lines and luxurious comfort, industry leading wired and wireless connectivity as standard, new levels of control and infinite flexibility in its work and dining areas.
“ Passengers experience exceptional seat width, taking advantage of the large cabin cross-section; they provide a roomy 22” in-seat cushion, a full-width integrated headrest and an intuitive single latch system which allows the passenger to effortlessly track in all direction and swivel 360º each single seat. ”
The Challenger 650 is a masterful expression of high-end design, craftsmanship, form and functionality. Superior aesthetics, ergonomics and technology unite to engage passengers at every conceivable touch-point in the reengineering of business aviation’s widest cabin, almost six inches wider than the closest competitor—promoting productivity, enabling enjoyment or taking comfort to another level to ensure better rest en route. The Challenger 650 aircraft’s new in-flight experience results in great part from a more efficient use of personal space. Every opportunity to leverage the width advantage and elevate passenger comfort—working, dining, or relaxing—has been seized and to a stunning effect. The cabin itself has a spacious interior; this has been achieved through ergonomic and intuitive features. The stunning new seat design is a beautiful contribution to ultimate comfort. The refined design is contemporary and blends perfectly with the cabin’s more fluid lines. Passengers experience exceptional seat width, taking advantage of the large cabin cross-section; they provide a roomy 22” in-seat cushion, a full-width integrated headrest and an intuitive single latch system which allows the passenger to effortlessly track in all direction and swivel 360º each single seat. The style has been meticulously developed to offer a contemporary yet timeless look and ergonomic leg-rests for more comfort. Additional features include the well-integrated side-ledge touchscreens, the side-deployable tables that optimise space and offer proper placement of firsthand passenger touch-points (e.g. cup-holder and cabin system interface). The inclusion of these features was paramount however

careful design has also ensured that no functionality has been compromised. Passenger Service Units hosting the air gaspers, table and reading lights were integrated in the design philosophy and are an evolution of the “pod” concept introduced in the Challenger 350 and Learjet 70/75. Breaking the linear tunnel-feel of conventional cabin interior design, the grouping of facing passenger seats provides a spacious cabin environment and a roomy bright feel. To complement this novel design, luxurious fabrics and materials were carefully selected to create an interior which enhances the geometry and ergonomics of the whole environment. Cabin elements give a striking look and also enhance the overall cabin feel and sense of usefulness, attention to ergonomics provide the experience and comfort of a superior product while the aesthetics features highlight the richness and the sturdiness of the interior. The only true 12-passenger capability aircraft in its class, the new Challenger 650 offers exceptional stand-up headroom, larger seats, more leg room, a flat floor throughout, and full in-flight access to baggage in an even more comfortable cabin. The passenger will now experience greater freedom and flexibility within the cabin. With a new galley design Bombardier have been able expand the horizon on in-flight dining. Completely rethought, the exquisitelyappointed new galley increases counter space and optimizes appliance placement for new levels of efficiency and productivity. The 72% larger oven can literally halve meal preparation times, of key importance with as many as 12 passengers on board. The Bombardier Vision flight deck provides pilots with a new cockpit experience and unprecedented levels of both comfort and control. Enhanced higher-thrust engines offer increased payload and runway capabilities, shorter take-off field length, allowing more passengers even easier access to more business destinations. With its 4,000 nm (7,408 km) range capability, the new Challenger 650 aircraft connects more key business cities non-stop, consistently flying fully-equipped with 6 passengers between London and New York, Dubai and London, and Sao Paulo to Miami. Bombardier have redefined the ultimate inflight experience, with industry-best overall value, proven reliability and efficiency, and new performance capabilities, the Challenger 650 aircraft is another example of Bombardier’s industry leadership. A better standard equipped aircraft than any other business jet in its class provides customers with everything they need and more. A masterwork of comfort redefined.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? In general terms I feel design is increasing exponentially in its value to customers and manufacturers. More and more OEM’s equal each other out in technical and manufacturing capabilities and therefore find the primary differentiator is design which enables the character and personality of their brands to stand out. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. 1) Hide technology components that clutter the environment. 2) Recyclable or sustainable materials. Still relevant. 3) Bio mimicry 4) Discrete personalization sandbox zones that “Wow” the customer when used. 5) Exoskeleton design. And key trends that we should be aware of? There are exciting developments in window systems and how we consider the external environment inside the aircraft. What projects are you currently working on? We have found much success in our Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 interior designs and due to this we are pushing this DNA into all of our products. Though I can’t specifically state which projects I have running I can say they are exciting and will break through what we consider aircraft interiors to be today. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? From an industrial design standpoint create canvases that allow the customer maximum material application diversity. From and interior design point of view I would present the customer with multiple design trends so as to gauge interest in novel vs. traditional schemes. Less veneer and more trimmed surfaces in areas like

bulkhead covers. This provides a more home-like environment. Then make sure they feel they have designed the interior instead of you. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? The field of design allows most designers to live personal and professional lives that blend. It is very important to shut off the work side of your mind but often the fun at home and with family involves sharing the ideas in both directions. However, empowering employees to help manage projects enables for work life balance. How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? Very important due to the deliberate focus on design and its influence on contemporary trends. This organization pushes the status quo and allows the design community access to many new ideas which become tomorrow’s normal. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? To continue to learn from my customers and develop further skills in relevant design trends and technical tools. The focus on non-aerospace applications and their potential use in aircraft interiors. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself: The car you drive? BMW 328 Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Sardinia, Italy Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? Hotel Pitrizza, Costa Smeralda Sardinia, Italy Your favourite food and drink? Bandaras fillet mignon with a Kettle One vodka martini with blue cheese olives. Corona Del Mar, CA

Born and raised in South Africa, Stef-Albert’s world travels and residencies in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Provence, and Italy provide a colourful and diverse palette from which he continuously draws. Whether designing the interior of a luxurious yacht or the expanse of a chateau, his celebrated creativity never ceases to thrill his discerning clients. Stef-Albert Studios is based in Manhattan with satellite offices in Paris and Los Angeles. In this project, Stef Albert executes ultimate luxury and elegance of the highest calibre for the private Airbus 380. Spacious, calm, sophisticated and reflective of success and privilege, this aircraft emulates the mastery of beauty. Owning a private aircraft is a luxury, but owning a private Airbus 380 is most likely the crown jewel of success. To reflect just that, the owners called in the expertise of Stef Albert to conceive ultimate luxury and style for cruising international skies. As a professional who spends a great deal of his time in the air, not a single detail or convenience was left to chance. From custom coloured leather and seating with built-in massage features, to top quality cashmere and wool blend carpeting, exotic wood panelling and state of the art technology, this aircraft is nothing shy of a cruising
dream of bliss. Flat screens projecting art from the owner’s private collection alternate depending on time of day or night. With two spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, a dining room and a lounge with bar, flying is but an extension of the luxury Stef Albert created for the same owner’s homes in five countries. Besides the spacious interior proportions, the design reflects a calm and sophisticated aesthetic. Complete with custom manufactured porcelain, crystal stemware bearing the owner’s family crest, thousand thread-count sheets and gold plated seat belts, all aspects of this project emulate beauty and excellence. The project achieves a sense of tranquillity and spaciousness unrivalled in generic private planes. Stef Albert believes the primary function of design is to make itself invisible, while conveying the taste, and above all, lifestyle of the client. His role as a designer is to enrich the perspective and experience of the client, and to assist in establishing his or her own individual standards of quality living. The true elements of timeless artistry are often overlooked in generic design. Stef Albert’s philosophy on design concludes that beauty and harmony come in perfect alignment once objects and forms are placed in positive dialogue to one another. The quality of materials and finishes applied within a design has a vital effect on the subconscious experience of the senses. It is for this very reason that spaces not only look good but feel equally so. This project has the sense of penthouse living while flying around the globe making it the epitome of luxury.

Creating a subtle accord between generous dimensions and a fresh profile, Facheris Design has created the Aqueous 120. Utilizing design in its purest state, the process was a study of form commenced by hand with planning and ideation sketches in the same manner used in car design and styling. The proportions and aerodynamics of the design were then assessed through modelling to achieve a silhouette which is the driving force behind the passion and emotion of the super yacht. An impressive 400 square meter after deck offers a large infinity pool, a retractable awning covering part of the deck and a doublelounge seat and bar. Integrated are two large garages holding two 11 meter limo tenders, a jet ski, and additional leisure equipment to enhance the ultimate yachting lifestyle. The forward deck includes a large sun pad and jacuzzi, long considered integral features for on-board relaxation. A notable design feature is the transformative capacity of the sun pad, which can be turned into a helicopter landing pad. The concept promotes a modern use of materials with glass featuring prominently throughout the superstructure and hull, maximizing the amount of natural light permeating each cabin, as well as the salon and entertainment spaces. This expansive visibility creates a synergy between the interior and exterior worlds. Furthermore, the Aqueous 120m will be powered by an environmentally responsible hybrid propulsion system, which will result in fewer emissions. The connections between all the typical elements of a super yacht are integrated into a unique profile that does notcompromise the interior volume. Facheris Design have been shortlisted for a Concept Over 40m Award in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016.

Style, elegance, and technology combined with impressive power and speed. An open and a coupé: two souls, entwined in one single, spectacular yacht. The 88’ Florida is, like many of its predecessors, the result of the close cooperation between Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee, the Group’s Engineering Department, and yacht designer Mauro Micheli, the co-founder, together with Sergio Beretta, of Officina Italiana Design, which exclusively design Riva’s entire range. All décor solutions explicitly draw inspiration from late 80s-early 90s atmospheres, paying tribute to some iconic Riva yachts of those times, like the Bahamas - the first to be pencilled by Mauro Micheli: the yacht is pervaded by is a warm Mediterranean style, which the Italian designer himself summarized using the term vintage, reinterpreted in a contemporary mood. The spiritual heir to the Riva Bahamas, the Riva Florida is a revolutionary yacht because it marries the open and coupé concepts in one effortless package, thanks to its simple but effective Convertible Top system. Premiered in spring 2015, it has magnificently sporty, streamlined lines which brilliantly complement the convertible superstructure concept. The original windows running along the hull draw plenty of light into the interior, and together with the silvery livery, create a line that accentuates the Florida’s raked sleekness. The ‘Convertible Top’ patented system The 88’ Florida is truly one in its kind in the entire yachting sector because of the innovative system that harmonizes two sporty souls on-board one single yacht: an exclusive Ferretti Group patent that has been installed for the very first time on this craft.

Meteor by Mural Yachts is a yacht designed in steel and aluminium to fit just under the 500GT with large open deck spaces and world cruising capabilities. It has been designed for family use with the occasional charter in mind. This 46m motor-yacht provides 4 decks of pure comfort. Expansive open spaces were of paramount importance thus large windows have been used throughout to provide plenty of light and give an airy, open feel throughout the interiors. To carry this requirement on the outside, plenty of open deck space is provided on the exterior decks. The sun deck provides a wet-bar, Jacuzzi, bathing platform and 3 distinct seating areas. The back upper deck provides an alternative area for sunbathing on sun loungers and an additional area for outdoor dining. Further on the upper deck seating is provided in front of the wheelhouse to enjoy the time spent cruising. However the best views are available on the crow’s nest. Forward of the upper deck seating there is access to the foredeck which is a large open uncluttered deck which could be used for multiple purposes. Low bulwarks make this deck feel even more spacious. The aft main deck allows for a more sheltered dining setting if necessary. From here it is possible to access the large swim platform which is equipped with an Opacmare transformer system for easy access to the sea. The yacht has very contemporary clean lines. The large windows low bulwarks and open deck spaces allow for constant connection to the sea which is often something large yachts are not able to provide. Mural Yachts have been successfully shortlisted for the Concept Over 40m award.
Sunrise Yachts, based in Turkey, are proud to celebrate the shortlisted success of their recent project Zenith. Zenith is a 70 meter unique shallow draft motor yacht with breath taking shell doors just above the waterline which enables exterior passage between swimming platform up to midship. Her shallow draft (2,95 metres) allowing the vessel to sail pretty much everywhere in the world is rare to find on the range of 70 meter. Detailed naval architecture and excessive tank tests created a highly efficient hull. Sunrise Yachts’ key aspect of large windows is also another feature of Zenith. Shell doors and the idea of using them to walk around the boat up to midship is just breath taking. Moreover, the concept of using micro turbines instead of conventional generators are unique and is a big step for green yachts. The builder’s favourite aspect of Zenith is her beautiful exterior lines and her piano key windows. Styling details have not been compromised; therefore engineering aspects are solved with clever solutions by thinking outside the box. Zenith will compete in the very strong category of Concept over 40m award.

‘The Spirit of The Emirates’ by Happy Design Studios
Etihad Airways B787 First Suites by Acumen Design Associates

Category: Aircraft Cabin Date delivered: December 2014 Completion centre: Boeing, Seattle Interior designer: Ian Dryburgh, Nigel Lawson, Anthony Harcup
As a part of a national project for the U.A.E, the idea behind The Spirit of The Emirates was to take one of the oldest types of aircraft, the Airship, and utilize it in a way that has never been done before. The Spirit of the Emirates will offer luxury tourist trips for the citizens and tourists departing from the ‘Spirit of the Emirates’ ground station. In suitable weather conditions, the ‘Spirit of the Emirates’ will glide quietly and elegantly at 1500ft over the most impressive landmarks to make the Emirates a true attraction. The distinctive shape of the airship combined with creative minds from Happy Design Studios ensures that the Spirit of the Emirates will make a dramatic impact in the skies of the UAE. The natural form of the Zeppelin makes it easy to appreciate from multiple angles. The design is taken to resemble a sort of flying whale meaning it will be enjoyed regardless of the location of the viewer. Launched by Captain Khaled Ahmed Al-Ansari, the studies for the ‘Spirit of the Emirates’ project began in 2003 with support from Mohammed Bin Rashed’s Establishment for Small and Medium Projects. Later, this initiative received wide support from several national bodies interested in this field in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, including the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority. Spirit of the Emirates therefore will represent the support and combined effort of the government. Happy Design Studio have been shortlisted for the Private Jet Concept Award in the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016.
Acumen Design Associates are literally pushing boundaries with their luxurious and highly innovative First Class product, achieved through a revolutionary patent-pending, curved-aisle cabin layout. Acumen’s design for Etihad Airways’ B787 interior is equally as ambitious as its highly acclaimed A380, with the same groundbreaking innovation evident in all elements of the cabin interior, from unique configurations to revolutionary seat designs. The challenge for Acumen was to create a completely bespoke product that could match the unrivalled levels of space, features and luxury afforded to the First Apartments on the A380; uniquely packaged into a product that could be integrated into the smaller B787 aircraft. Without the tapered profile, the suites would be significantly narrower, with large amounts of space wasted in order to meet the required aisle clearances. Instead, the seat structure is positioned as far back into the suite as possible to enhance the comfort and give the guest the maximum amount of usable and perceived visual space. This sets the project apart, as it is the first time a First Class private suite has been integrated into a B787. The airline wanted to continue the innovation of its new cabin interiors with the creation of a brand new First Class product for its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet and to deliver a guest experience that would reflect the airline’s now well established reputation for innovation and excellence in intelligent cabin design. Acumen Design Associates have been shortlisted for the Commercial Cabin (1st Class) category in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016.

Sea Shadow by Splinakis Ship Design Category: Concept over 40m Length overall: 60m Date delivered: (concept) Interior designer: Simona Cecconello Exterior designer: Andrea Splinakis Naval architect: Andrea Splinakis The main target of the Sea Shadow concept design by Splinakis Ship Design was to study, develop and reach a solution suitable to offer large and comfortable spaces for guests, both on the indoor private and common areas and on the outdoor spaces. To reach the target, Splinakis Ship Design adopted the idea, already investigated in a previous design , to use the lower deck as free-board deck, so that the 4 guest cabins located on the lower deck have a dedicated common balcony with foldable bulwark possible to be used as beach platform. The outdoor common areas have been designed to offer as large space as possible suitable to accommodate all guests without generating a feeling of a crowded environment. The elements that guided the Sea Shadow’s interior design were the search for comfort and a sober and elegant style. This has been obtained with the use of clean lined furniture and warm natural textures of wood, leather and fabrics. The juxtaposition of these warm materials against the coolness of steel, marble, backlit onyx and glass, creates a modern, understated but luxurious feel . All of these elements are tied together by the clever use of lighting which illuminates the space with a soft cosy hue. Splinakis Ship Design have been shortlisted for a Concept over 40m Award in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016. The two designers, Simona and Andrea, met by chance after more than twenty years, deciding to cooperate in yachts and ships design. This is their first joint project: a challenge, a bet, a success.

The WIDER 150, a sleek, modern, avant garde tri-deck super yacht. Constructed entirely in aluminium, the elegant silhouette of the WIDER 150 was created by Fulvio De Simoni in collaboration with Tilli Antonelli and the in-house WIDER design team. The WIDER 150 is unique in her ability to provide a number of luxury features only usually found on a larger vessel. She boasts three spacious decks for guests to enjoy. She has a 90-meter-squared beach club, a 7-meter swimming pool and a 32-foot tender, among other impressive amenities. The WIDER 150 is able to accommodate up to 11 guests. A 75-meter-squared master stateroom with a 4-meter-squared sea terrace is located on the main deck; four additional guest staterooms are located below deck. All guest rooms have en-suite staterooms. As with Wider 42’ continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces was an issue of the utmost importance and the interior areas were managed more freely, focusing on attaining the greatest integration between the yacht and the surrounding environment, with a style that follows no fashion trend, characterised by clean lines and taut, smooth surfaces. All Wider projects feature a moment of design magic, and on the 150 a section of foredeck raises up at the touch of a button to become a light yet robust roof protecting a properly equipped lounging area. The massive skylounge will be a favourite place for guests to enjoy. The interior is contemporary and luxurious. A balcony forward from the master stateroom is located on the main deck and sea-level balconies open around the swimming pool at the transom. Good spatial planning like this is a feature on the Wider 150, from the open-plan saloon on the main deck to the saloon on the upper deck.
Turkish shipbuilders Sunrise Yachts are celebrating the shortlisted success of IRIMARI, a majestic ocean-going megayacht with transoceanic range, featuring all the luxury amenities expected on such a yacht and destined to offer ultimate comfort at sea for extended cruising and a most memorable experience. The vessel’s graceful lines and perfect proportions are penned by the ever-talented Espen Øino. They offer an ideal combination of spectacular living spaces whose impressive dimensions are large enough to be visually breathtaking, but yet still allow for berthing at most superyacht marinas worldwide. IRIMARI has a stunning bleached-oak and copper-strip interior designed by Focus Yacht Design of Bremen and naval architecture by Unique Yacht Design of Antalya. She is a full-displacement motor yacht capable of cruising up to 6,000 miles and reaching a top speed of 17 knots. The collaboration worked so well using a variation of a common design vocabulary in order to achieve spaces which flow into each other and form a sequence with well-matched surfaces. Therefore the different rooms create a calm and inviting environment without ever being boring. The design achieves its potential as the attention is purposefully grabbed by highlights which ensure the individuality and purpose of each room. These highlights never compete with each other but appeal with the overall ambiance on board, they are designed to complement and enhance each other. The unique and one-of-a-kind interiors of Iwana derived their inspiration from the slick and timeless design of the exterior. As a vessel beyond contemporary standards, it carries an impressive art collection and custom furnishings of the highest quality. Every detail designed and manufactured by Stef-Albert Studios, it meets the impeccable standards of the discerning owner. With groundbreaking surface materials and finishes, luxury and beauty is all the eye meets from top to bottom. This project is now celebrating success in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 in the category of Concept over 40m. Iwana has an overall length of 87m / 288ft and a 15m / 49ft beam. She has a berth capacity for 16 guests in 8 cabins and crew of more than 20. “I wanted to create the ambience of an exclusive nightclub whilst simultaneously merging the expansive exterior waters and skies.” said Stef Albert. Whether the owner entertains lavishly or prefers the privacy of the breathtaking master suite, the IWANA raises the bar as a one-of-a-kind design. From the moment guests step on-board, sophistication and elegance rule. Walk down the elegant, winding master staircase – or take the alternate method of transport, the vessel’s well-appointed elevator – the guests will instantly time-warp into a chic-meetscomfortable atmosphere. Surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with ample natural light, the expansive dining room has two main focal points: a monolithic wall adorned in a customized light-weight faux marble with gold inlay, and the incomparable beauty of Mother Nature’s enchanting horizon views. Most impressive about this luxury yacht is its unique flooring and wall surfaces. Created and developed by Stef Albert, these are produced through a modern version of a 17th-century technique, “Scagliola,” which combines seline, glue, synthetics and natural pigments to imitate marble and other hard stones without excessive weight.
In July 2015 Cruiser Yachts launched their flagship Cantius 60’. The project was a partnership with Facheris Design in collaboration with De Basto Designs. Now Facheris Design are celebrating shortlisted success in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 in the Power Yacht up to 25m category. The design brief for this project was to offer exceptional space, layout, comfort and performance in a design unique from previous cruisers models. The client was looking for a modern, aggressive, eurostyled look that would maintain interior spaces and ergonomics. The design allowed for large interior spaces without compromising the overall proportions of the profile. The design philosophy behind the Cantius 60 is to do everything with ease. Rather than pack as many features as possible into this new yacht it has been designed to focus in gracious dimensions. The yacht is laid out and opened up to allow for maximum comfortable living. Colours are used to define the interior spaces through monolithic volumes and shapes which are enhanced by a light and dark palette using natural wood and fabrics. Not many colours or prints, just an accent colour. Details like the stairway and bathrooms gave the opportunity to fashion them as design statements. The result is an exquisite living space, feeling surprisingly larger than other 60 footers.
Iwana guarantees the ultimate experience of modern yet timeless sophistication of balance, beauty and rhythm.

Oyster Yachts brief was to create a worthy successor to the highly successful 82, providing elegant superyacht luxury for six guests, with suitably appointed galley and crew areas enabling a full ‘six star’ service without compromise to her performance. The result is Oyster 825 - Maegan which has been shortlisted for The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 in the category Sailing Yacht. Whether it be global cruising or racing, Maegan is always strictly adhering to Oyster’s world renowned reputation for strength and seaworthiness whatever the conditions. Oyster Design employed the latest 3d technologies to optimise available space within the sleek, easily driven hull from Humphreys Yacht Design. This maximises the standard layout of the en-suite owner and guest accommodation in three double cabins aft, whilst providing independent quarters for four professional crew to run the yacht discreetly. Abreast of the trend towards lifestyle orientated yachts she would feature a large, full width saloon, with the feeling of light and space which is further enhanced by a state-of-the-art side-sliding glass companionway and Oyster’s trademark triple Seascape windows giving unique views to the horizon when seated. Seamlessly integrating the intricate systems of a high quality modern vessel, with painstaking attention to sound mitigation and unobtrusive service access, would ensure the owners’ enjoyment of the yacht.
Argentinian based Corgo Yachts’ INARA boasts a sophisticated, elegant, sleek profile with modern, clean lines and a simple design, inspired by studying sports cars from the client’s private collection. For the exterior design, emphasis was placed on the topsides in order to embody the feeling of a sports car, adding accent lines along the surfaces. The hull lines were developed to make INARA appear different from every angle, combining convex and concave surfaces that blend into each other to form a stylish profile. The superstructure was placed far aft and special attention was given to the shape of the large glass surfaces, to achieve the Coupé look they were after. Though the superstructure may look enclosed, there are windows and pivoting balconies that allow light to penetrate the main salon and the owner’s suit. The exterior is divided into four areas, each with a different purpose. Forward on the main deck, a wide-beam lounge area was added and includes a full-glass Jacuzzi. Glass features heavily on the balconies to ensure that views out to sea are not interrupted when you are sitting inside. A glass-covered stern opens up into a beach club, an area that includes a wet bar, dayhead and large seating areas both inside and out when the platform is deployed. Corgo Yacht Design have been shortlisted for a Concept up to 40m award in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016.
Maegan’s very linear interior defines its beauty, with joinery in horizontal grain quarter-sawn limed oak and a walnut sole throughout. This creates a spacious and welcoming yacht with a wonderfully open and airy feel, benefiting from judicious use of painted panels and careful fabric selection to add contrast and interest to a minimalist brief from a very knowledgeable and design literate client.
