This month we are concentrating on some of the short listed projects for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2016. The Awards Ceremony will once again be held in the inspirational setting of Venice, surely one of the most magical cities in the world. The event will, however, be a two day event. On Thursday 19th May there will be a drinks reception and VIP/ Sponsors dinner to celebrate design et al’s tenth anniversary and then on Friday 20th May we will hold The Awards Ceremony. Over the coming months you will see, and get the chance to take a closer look, at more of the short listed projects for 2016, both in the aviation and yacht categories.
I am delighted to formally announce a slightly new direction that we will be moving in over the course of the next twelve months.; as you know we are design publishers, we look at aesthetics rather than technicalities, our perspective has always been quite clear. Well we are taking this a step further, we are going to take time to look closely at the very structure of these design schemes, the areas within the project and components of the design. We aim to offer innovation and inspiration to offer ideas, endorse key new looks, services and products, to raise standards and to breathe new life into interior design schemes. We will show you a little more over the coming months.
Best, Joanne

Lucy by Garroni Design Lucy 26m Motor Sailor designed by interior designer Vittorio Garroni, is a modern blue sea multipurpose ketch rigged sailing yacht designed for ocean cruising and exploration grand voyages suitable both for hotel yacht charter operation and for private owner use. The sailing yacht has twin engines, shallow draft, high capacity fuel and fresh water tanks. Its ultimate equipment, easy handling and ability to run under sails make her a unique long range yacht, responding to highest cruise standards in full comfort and total safety. Regarding the comfort of living on-board, interior layout of the yacht has been designed in respect of higher standing charter operation requirements or Owner’s expectations. The space is organised on 3 accommodations decks. The modern saloon and living room area accommodates a spacious dining area along with a relaxing sofa and a stylish bar counter. The main upper deck has a luxurious and relaxing sun bathing area along with an outside dining area. The lower deck holds three en-suite double bedrooms with a deluxe shower that converts into a sauna. This design is an innovative yacht typology which gives a sailing yacht the same comfort of a motor yacht. The motor sailor has a GRP hullmoulded long keel, mixed system structured based on transverse frames supporting longitudinal. Its strengthened transverse frames are used in a way of masts and keel based portals are there to support the masts. Bow section is separated with a collision bulkhead. The engine room is situated under the living room with separate watertight bulkheads.

Green by Mural Yachts Green is a fully aluminium yacht designed with electric propulsion configured to MCA LY3. Mural yachts have developed this for a client who is environmentally conscious but likes to live in ultimate luxury. The entire upper deck belongs to the owner with plenty of open deck space. Glass surrounds the upper structure and a sliding glass door entrance provides almost a 360 degree view. The sliding glass roof above the master bed provides the owners with the pleasure of outdoor sleeping with indoor comforts. There are several locations on deck to enjoy the outdoor scenery and weather. The upper deck has a large open area to enjoy the fine dining in the open weather. A more sheltered area is provided in the main aft deck. Guests can sunbathe on the back main deck and the owners can enjoy their private deck on the front upper deck. Plenty of space is provided on the front of the main deck for guests to enjoy a casual drink or simple meals. This is also the perfect place to enjoy the sights whilst cruising around. The open uncluttered teak deck also provides an additional feeling of comfort. An Opacmare transformer system allows for easy access to the sea from the swimming platform. The large battery banks on-board allow for up to 6 hours cruising at 10kts ensuring extremely silent running. The modern lines complement the modern propulsion technology. Open deck spaces are joined with stanchions instead of closed bulwarks to open up the yacht and provide a high level of connection to the sea.
VIA Lounge by South African Airways South African Airways Passengers can now enjoy a stylish new domestic departures lounge ,the VIA Lounge,at OR Tambo International Airport. Following months of extensive refurbishment, the new facility has been appropriately named VIA lounge, as the lounges are a transition point for travellers for they travel via the airport to the destination of their choice. VIA Lounge features ample and comfortable seating areas, fresh cuisine options, a rotating art gallery showcasing South African artists, a Junior Pilots children’s area, runway views and high-speed internet. In the lounge travellers will discover a sophisticated and welcoming space with subtle, earthy tones that complement the SAA colour palette and aircraft interiors. The plush seating fabric and texture create a link between the platinum and business lounge experience, while the visual language and local food expertly served by the VIA lounge crew celebrates the city of Johannesburg. Whether passengers need to work or want to relax before their next flight, the VIA lounge offers a relaxing and stylish option to enjoy. “The lounge will offer a fantastic pre-departure experience displayed through warm hospitality that has become synonymous with the SAA brand,” said Sylvain Bosc, SAA Chief Commercial Officer. “Whether they want to relax or work before a flight, the lounge is the perfect place to do this,” Bosc said. The lounge design was completed by Switch, an award winning Johannesburg-based agency. The new domestic lounge is the perfect addition to SAA’s unique international arrivals lounge, ideal for passengers arriving from the UK who are connecting to a domestic flight. The international arrivals lounge offers customers the opportunity to freshen up and take a shower before making the short walk to the domestic terminal where, after clearing security, passengers can relax or catch up on work prior to their domestic connection.

LASVIT Captures the Essence of Water in Luxury Glass LASVIT’s recent presentation at the Monaco Yacht Show made it clear that both their bespoke installations and designer lighting perfectly complement the interiors of cruise ships and luxury yachts. Bohemian crystal adorned palaces, chateaus and grand theatres for centuries, but LASVIT is the Czech manufacturer of modern-day luxury glass, blending traditional techniques with contemporary design. Their expansive lighting sculptures can be seen in the lobbies of five-star hotels, hideaway resorts, fine restaurants and boutiques worldwide. Although most of their work is custom-tailored for particular public spaces and private residences, LASVIT also collaborates with world-renowned designers including Daniel Libeskind, Campana Brothers, Arik Levy and Nendo for their designer lighting collections. Fascinated by the possibilities of this exclusively hand-made production, designers come to the Czech Republic to work with LASVIT’s master glass-makers. Glass is processed in its liquid form and its translucent and reflective qualities uniquely embody the essence of water – from bubbles, ripples and waves to ice. One glance at LASVIT´s portfolio reveals that their design vision and expert craftsmanship are best able to capture both the essence of water and our imagination.

“ The favourite key aspect for the project is Maegan’s very linear interior. With joinery in horizontal grain quartersawn limed oak and a walnut sole throughout, it creates a spacious and welcoming yacht with a wonderfully open and airy feel ”
Oyster’s 825 brief was to create a worthy successor to the highly successful 82, providing elegant superyacht luxury for six guests, with suitably appointed galley and crew areas enabling a full ‘six star’ service without compromise to her performance, whether global cruising or racing, always strictly adhering to Oyster’s world renowned reputation for strength and seaworthiness whatever the conditions. Oyster Design would employ the latest 3d technologies to optimise available space within the sleek, easily driven hull from Humphreys Yacht Design, maximising the standard layout of en-suite owner and guest accommodation in three double cabins aft, whilst providing independent quarters for four professional crew to run the yacht discreetly. Abreast of the trend towards lifestyle orientated yachts she would feature a large, full width saloon, with the feeling of light and space further enhanced by a state-of-the-art sidesliding glass companionway and Oyster’s trademark triple Seascape windows giving unique views to the horizon when seated. Seamlessly integrating the intricate systems of a high quality modern vessel, with painstaking attention to sound mitigation and unobtrusive service access, would ensure the owners’ enjoyment of the yacht. The owners’ brief for Maegan built upon Oyster’s standard 825 design, generating a global cruising yacht with unrivalled race performance and a highly specified interior befitting a true superyacht, within a highly contemporary minimalist theme. However, minimalist was not to imply any form of discomfort, so careful use of colour and fabrics would enhance the interior ambience, along with touch screen controlled lighting and air conditioning systems. The favourite key aspect for the project is Maegan’s very linear interior. With joinery in horizontal grain quarter-sawn limed oak

and a walnut sole throughout, it creates a spacious and welcoming yacht with a wonderfully open and airy feel, benefiting from judicious use of painted panels and careful fabric selection to add contrast and interest to a minimalist brief from a very knowledgeable and design literate client. Centred on the superb views offered by the Seascape windows, the saloon’s ‘lifestyle bias’ is further enhanced by a clever concealed galley door and sliding panel arrangement offering the opportunity to instantly switch between an informal family orientated open plan living area, and then in the evening, to a more intimate saloon isolated from the galley for comfortable and sophisticated entertaining. The Ocean Air blinds and soft furnishings bring the interior together combining the luxurious feel with the upholstery on the furniture from Passports of Southampton. As for the exterior, the LED lights from Ocean LED give Maegan a modern approach and show off the boats finest assets at night fall. CEO of Oyster Yachts, David Tydeman, said , “Maegan was built for the two shareholders behind Oyster Yachts and Mrs Marja de Pundert, wife of one of them, worked closely with our Senior Interior Designer Marcus Wright. Marja had never worked on yacht interiors before yet had a very clear focus on what she wanted. We’re delighted that her efforts are being recognised through the awards.” The designers fully believe that the design works well due to how it demonstrates Oyster’s ability to build a Lifestyle type of vessel without turning their backs on their core values and reputation of high performance seaworthy blue water sailing yachts. It shows that the company is eager to tailor the boats to the specific requirements of individuals; none of the 885s and 825s built so far are the same.

The unveiling of the MCY 105 coincided with Monte Carlo Yachts’ five year anniversary and the 32-metre flagship is the most tangible exemplification of the company’s vision and the best expression of Monte Carlo Yacht’s iconic, timeless style and the naval allure of its collection. The MCY 105 is the largest in the MCY collection and the boatyard’s distinctive trait of creating spaces only available on megayachts is particularly evident. The interior spaces on-board the MCY 105 are incredibly voluminous. The large Portuguese deck at the bow and the flybridge with equipment and living space are unmatched in its class, while the unique and ergonomic Raised Pilot House gives maximum comfort to the master cabin - located on the main deck - that features full beam and giant full-size windows.
“ Featuring the MCY collection’s iconic design elements such as a perfect balance of the hull and superstructure, the MCY 105 is the result of a painstaking attention given to proportions, the inherent dynamism of the lines and to every single detail, no matter how small ”
Featuring the MCY collection’s iconic design elements such as a perfect balance of the hull and superstructure, the MCY 105 is the result of a painstaking attention given to proportions, the inherent dynamism of the lines and to every single detail, no matter how small. The MCY 105 is elegant and instantly recognisable and the imposing bulwarks and high bow award the boat with the naval allure so distinctive of the timeless MCY style. This is the first MCY over 100’ and she follows the exterior styling and aerospace construction methods pioneered in the company’s four earlier models which range from 65’ to 86’. Several years ago MCY commissioned the internationally-known, award-winning design team of Carlo Nuvolari & Dan Lenard to create the “MCY Look”. It had to be distinctive, yet not ostentatious or contrived. The N&L creation was tested first on the MCY 76 over three years ago, then on three other models from 65’ to 86’ (19.8 m to 26.2 m) that have been introduced in the meantime. In just four years MCY’s four models have shaken up the fiberglass megayacht industry like nothing that has come before. By creating a distinctive look that was not too radical or fashion conscientious and one that was anchored in practical motoryacht function accented with classic design cues, yet was obviously modern, MCY captured the imagination of discerning yacht buyers all over the world. Once again the builder offers virtually unlimited customization possibilities within the confines of its exterior shell. In terms of external styling the brief was for something timeless, a Future Classic. The MCY 105 lines from Nuvolari and Lenard are distinctive and sophisticated, always concluded, nor superstructure nor hull shapes are prevailing: they logically match. The novelty of the MCY 105 lies in the beauty of a decisive approach which can soften once on the sea: the right choice for a yacht which can be relied on for top-level nautical performance and which looks to offer
34 Luxe Et Al
elegance in every detail. MCY 105 stands out for her smooth lines and the high bow. From distance the profile looks deceptively low – the horizontal bands of dark windows and white superstructure draw out the horizontal planes, fooling the eye. The bulwarks are sensibly higher than the current fashion and the overhanging side deck is wide and gives good coverage from the elements. From a quay or tender alongside, however, what stands out is mass. The foredeck is truly class leading, and Portuguese bridges such as these are normally reserved for mega yachts. In the interior, the living room fulfils all the promise of the external spaces and increases in a succession of luxurious living areas. The comfortable feeling comes from a balanced connection between tradition and the best use of the decorative materials that Italy has to offer. The whole interior can be customized combining a sophisticated palette of woods, stones and fabrics. The full beam owners’ suite offers spectacular panoramic views through full-size windows to both sides. The warm décor underlines the very convenient and contemporary overall look and makes one feel very comfortable indeed. MCY uses an aerospace monocoque structural concept, the hull and the deck provide most of the vessel’s strength, thus reinventing the structural bulkheads and flooring with innovative materials. This allows the builder to be able to offer customers virtually any interior layout that they want. A secondary advantage of this construction concept is that high, longitudinal stringers can be reduced, allowing the actual living spaces to be lowered somewhat in the vessel giving her a more sleek profile. It is usual for a boat of this size to take from one to three years to complete and due to the average number of man-hours needed, typically 100,00, they are also terribly expensive. Because of MCY’s monocoque design the interiors of its boats are built in modules outside the hull on the shop floor where the craftsmen can attack all four sides of a project at once with tools and materials easily at hand. Not only is critical work done faster, it is also done better because the installations are not done in confined spaces. Wiring and plumbing is designed to be “plugand-play”. This all results in a tremendous savings in human effort. MCY says that the 105 can be built with just 40,000 man-hours. When buying 100’ (30.5 m) boats the buyer knows what they want: a master cabin on the main deck, a raised pilothouse and Portuguese bridge, lots of large entertaining spaces, and a yacht on three decks not on four, in order to minimize climbing. The Mote Carlo Yacht and N&L design collaboration has been able to incorporate all of these requirements - and many others - into a yacht that is low, sleek and graceful-looking, a real triumph.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? Designs are getting more and more technological. More flexible multifunctional spaces when it comes to arrangement on yachts. As for exterior styling designs are becoming more and more organic and glass as a material is becoming more and more utilised. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond.
• • • • •
Efficient hull design Environmental considerations Functional design Clean uncluttered design Innovation incorporation of new technologies
What projects are you currently working on? The 46m will start construction around mid November so busy getting everything ready for that. At the same time still developing the 37m Project Green. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Listen to the demands of the client and then don’t over complicate it. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Try to take one day at a time and try to remember one way or another things get sorted out eventually.

The crew quarter arrangements allow from four to six, depending on the configuration. Richard Allender, Ocean Alexander’s Director of US Operations, commented, “It’s common for many builders to keep design and engineering in-house to save on costs amongst other reasons. We feel this line of thinking prohibits them from building the best boats possible. If all of the ideas are contained within a sector, it becomes harder to think outside of the box. By building these relationships with world-renowned designers and firms, we are creating ideas through collaboration that are innovative and will set the bar higher in the industry.”

WHY YOU SHOULD BE INVOLVED • The Awards are unique – we engage the global design community and encourage voting from the industry, surely these are the people who count ? • The voting system has grown by more than 400 % since the awards were launched in 2011. This tells us it works. We think this is the best pr you will do this year. • For a vote to be considered actual, it needs to be an individual vote from a unique IP address and individuals need to vote in every category to ensure a fair and objective process. Voters in 2015 took an average of 31 minutes to complete the voting process. This is some serious engagement. • The Awards are supported by Luxe et al, part of design et al. Luxe et al support every shortlisted project with editorial and pr. In 2016 the total value of pr and editorial will exceed £1 million for these awards alone. • In 2015 applications increased by more than 100% on 2014. • The guest list is good. The awards are select, targeted and attract the “right” people. They are not large corporate awards attended by swarms of sales staff. Places are restricted to 200 guests. • The synergy between yacht and aviation design is good, the client profile is similar. The International Yacht & Aviation Awards are the only awards to combine the two sectors.

IRIMARI is a majestic ocean-going megayacht with transoceanic range, featuring all the luxury amenities you would expect on such a yacht and destined to offer ultimate comfort at sea for extended cruising and a most memorable experience.
“ IRIMARI has a stunning bleachedoak and copper-strip interior designed by Focus Yacht Design of Bremen and naval architecture by Unique Yacht Design of Antalya ”
The vessel’s graceful lines and perfect proportions are penned by the ever-talented Espen Øino. They offer an ideal combination of spectacular living spaces whose impressive dimensions are large enough to be visually breathtaking, but yet still allow for berthing at most superyacht marinas worldwide. IRIMARI has a stunning bleachedoak and copper-strip interior designed by Focus Yacht Design of Bremen and naval architecture by Unique Yacht Design of Antalya. She is a full-displacement motor yacht capable of cruising up to 6,000 miles and reaching a top speed of 17 knots. The favourite aspect of the project is the variation of a common design vocabulary in order to achieve spaces which flow into each other and form a sequence with well-matched surfaces. Therefore the different rooms create a calm and inviting
62 Luxe Et Al
environment without ever being boring. The design works so well due to the attention that is purposefully grabbed by highlights which ensure the individuality and purpose of each room. These highlights never compete with each other but appeal with the overall ambiance on board, they are designed to complement and enhance each other. Even the smallest aspects, such as the kitchenware by Miele, can add the finest touches to create an entire look of a room in IRIMARI. As for the upperdeck, beautiful outdoor furniture pieces from Garpa demonstrate their true elegance to create a scenic look on board as well as naval architects Özgün Yachts engineering and exterior outfitting. All of these together truly bring out the wow-factor for IRIMARI. Sunrise Yachts’ President & CEO, Guillaume Roché said: “IRIMARI shows how Sunrise Yachts has rapidly established itself as one of the better and busiest superyacht builders in Europe. Debuting IRIMARI at Monaco Yacht Show will be a very proud moment for us all. We believe that she will definitely impress even the hardest of critics.”

“ This timeless interior features a modern balance between classic European flare and traditional designs. The elegant interior has various shades of cream and taupe that contrast beautifully against the dark veneer and hand crafted carpet, which flows harmoniously from tip-to-tail ”
This Airbus A320 marks the 9th VIP interior completed for Comlux America, the Completion and Services center of the Comlux Group based in Indianapolis Indiana, subsidiary company to Zurich, Switzerland based Comlux Aviation Services. This is one of the finest private A320 on the market today, but it can also boast about having one of the lightest weight cabins, which optimizes the overall range performance of the aircraft. Other achievements include an unparalleled noise level measuring a staggering 45.4 dBSIL. The aircraft is licensed to carry up to twentyseven passengers, and has the capability of transforming the VIP areas into individual sleeping compartments which provides guests optimal sleep comfort. With the use of the In-flight System from Rockwell Collins, this aircraft is truly unique. The IFE system displays real time map and flight information and allows the passengers to stream movies wirelessly onto IPADs that are available upon request. This aircraft truly comes equipped with everything a guest might want or need while travelling; no detail was overlooked. The project flourished as a result of the Comlux creatives working with Fiona Riddle, for the collaboration of this beautiful interior. Each piece of this interior was specifically selected to make sure the aircraft is up to the highest standard. The carpets from Tai Ping add a soft elegant touch complementing the rest of the interior.

Chief Designer, Lauri Church, said that the overall design inspiration came from the customer’s needs and wants. “The customer was heavily involved, probably more so than most. The overall flow and usage aspects were exclusively designed for him. Many of the rooms are multi-functional and have the ability to transform the aircraft from having one bedroom to three with queen sized beds,” said Church. “Most of the materials used were guided by the direction of Fiona, the interior designer, and the specific design style that she expected. The overall style can be classified as Modern European. It was very important to her that it be a very warm and inviting environment.” This timeless interior features a modern balance between classic European flare and traditional designs. The elegant interior has various shades of cream and taupe that contrast beautifully against the dark veneer and hand crafted carpet, which flows harmoniously from tip-to-tail. From the moment guests enter they are immediately impressed with the warm and comforting atmosphere of the cabin. It was important to maintain comfort for the customer while serving also as a travelling office. The entire interior comes together for both business and personal needs to create a home away from home for the owner and their guests.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? As design and production tools become more and more intelligent through digitalisation, the reality of things will come closer and closer to whatever we imagine, making our manmade landscape more intuitive, emotional and organic. With regards to luxury I think designers need to strongly reevaluate their approach to this category. The concept of luxury should go far beyond expensive materials and perfect craftsmanship in order to enhance status. Especially in yacht design one should wonder if luxury comes down to being isolated in an air conditioned box, or is luxury about your experience of traveling through nature and landscapes. What is your relation to the ocean around from your vessel? These questions don’t seem to be answered often. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design. Every project requires its particular approach. As a designer I’m not concerned with general themes but project, client, context specific themes. My approach to any theme is as follows: simple and recognisable yet treated in a way that has never been done before. And key trends that we should be aware of? Tjep. commandment number seven: Thou shalt not conform to trends, thou wilt serve thy brothers and sisters by living thy own trend. Reference: http://www.tjep.com/projects/profile/the10-tjep-s What projects are you currently working on? We are designing the visitor center for the European Central Bank for the new head office in Frankfurt designed by Koop Himmelblauw. We are working on the Philips Lighting Application center in Eindhoven, a place where Philips will demonstrate the newest LED technology in a retail environment. We will soon start to work on the Brussels Airport Common Lounge for the new wing. A new restaurant design for Schiphol Airport conceived as art hub. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Start with the big idea and work down slowly towards details. The concept should be formulated in one sentence and understandable for a non-designer. If you have non designer grand-mother or grand-father that would be your reference. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Diversity is what keeps the creativity flowing. You are often at your best when approaching a subject for

the first time. If you stick to one subject project after project it becomes harder and harder to innovate. For me a day at work feels like life, in contrast a day at the beach feels like work. I’m exaggerating but you get my point. As I advance in my career it becomes easier and easier to let go of work to concentrate on quality time with my loved ones. The ambition is still the same but the sense of urgency to ‘get there’ is less dominant as you advance. How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? It’s good to have a quality award specifically geared at Yacht and Aviation design. Recognition via awards is an important validation moment for both designers and their clients. My career was propelled when I won the Dutch Design Awards for the British Airways fist class lounge at Heathrow Airport. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? Be clearer about my position as designer and make choices accordingly. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself... The car you drive? The region I live in Holland is very urbanised so my choice for a car was really a functional choice. The real luxury in Amsterdam is that one takes the bicycle to go to work: fun, healthy, ecological and extremely efficient. The contemporary car that I admire most: the Spyker Venator B6. Your favourite place to travel to in the world? I would say a place untouched by western consumerism such as Namibia. Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? Fogo Island Inn The place that gives you the most energy? Laugardalslaug, Reykjavik And the place that enables you to totally relax? My boat in Friesland, Friesland is a beautiful region of lakes in the north of the Netherlands. Your favourite food and drink? A Lobster at Abel’s Lobster Pound on Mount Desert Island in Maine. Anything else interesting? I collect figurines and display them all in one display in my house. They have absolutely no function, are usually not designed by designers and come from all over the world, it’s my personal melting pot of good and bad taste and I just love to look at it.

“ SILVER FAST is the world’s largest and fastest aluminium motor yacht with conventional propulsion in terms of length to speed ratio. ”
84 Luxe Et Al
SILVER FAST is the fourth and most recent Superyacht built by Australia’s premier luxury yacht builder SILVERYACHTS. She is the most advanced, eco-fuel efficient vessel in the ground-breaking silver series. Designed by Espen Oeino, one of the world’s most famous yacht designers, SILVER FAST retains the super-sleek contour and unique hull lines of her much-prized predecessors but with a striking new all dark silver paint. At 77 metres (252.6ft) with a top speed of over 27 knots in optimal conditions, SILVER FAST is the world’s largest and fastest aluminium motor yacht with conventional propulsion in terms of length to speed ratio. SILVER FAST is also the fastest long range cruising yacht – 4,500 nautical miles at 18 knots and 6,000 nautical miles at 14 knots with an already proven capability to effortlessly complete long passages in every sea state. She is capable of crossing the Atlantic at approximately 22 knots cruising speed, which performance is recordbreaking. SILVERYACHTS is extremely proud to have been entrusted to build and deliver a superyacht as stylish, high in performance and technically impressive as SILVER FAST. The collaboration of the skills and guidance of designer Espen Oeino and Interior designer Andreas Holnburger have achieved a fantastic result.
the overall length of the vessel”, said Oeino. Andreas Holnburger, the interior designer for SILVER FAST said, “The clear shaped dark coloured exterior is represented with the interior design of SILVER FAST. All rooms are clear and modern but yet cosy and welcoming. Subtle contrasts, resulting from different materials and textures, rather than different colours, soothe the eye.” “The matt varnished open grain Teak contrasts with polished metal surfaces, polished marble is completed with velvet finished Corian and plain soft leather is combined with rough woven fabrics. The overall colour scheme in natural tones from beige to tabac and warm grey is accompanied by silver metal painted accent panels, grey coloured mirrors and the natural shine of the silk carpet.” SILVER FAST is the culmination of some 15 years of collaboration and dedication between the Hanseatic Marine, SILVER YACHTS team, SILVER FAST’S Owner and his designers. Over 550,000 man hours were invested specifically in the build of SILVER FAST to ensure the yacht met the very high exacting standards set out by the Owner and his designers in the project brief.
Eepen Oeino said he believes that the design works so well because the external appearance of a yacht is to a large extent determined by its internal volumes and the distribution of these. In the quest for speed with low energy consumption and therefore efficiency, the volume distribution of SILVER FAST is arranged longitudinally rather than vertically; and thus transversally for stability reasons as is the case with most yachts today.
The Owner challenged the yard to improve comfort levels from the already high standard of Smeralda. Light weight aluminium construction can challenge some yards in this area, yet comfort and performance has been the yard’s DNA since inception. The technical team set to work, drawing from significant databases of noise and vibration data from trials, then applying state of the art technology and selecting high performance equipment and systems, and the result is the most comfortable yacht in the Silver series.
“We feel that the objective has been met as most people seem to agree the external design is rather timeless. One specific feature is the sheer line which runs from the stern (top of the bulwark) all the way up to the bow as one continuous line, thus emphasising the simplicity of the design and
The triumphant SILVER FAST has benefited significantly from the Owners vision and commitment towards achieving constant improvements in the design, build and operation of the vessel, as well as his support and encouragement of SILVERYACHTS to take the same approach.

“ Passenger comfort was the paramount concern in all aspects of the remarkable design and it is evident that a new standard has been set for commercial travel ”
With each passing year the standard of designs submitted to the International Yacht and Aviation awards become more impressive and exceptional. This is particularly evident from the 2015 shortlist for the Commercial Cabin – Economy / Business Class category. Designers are now pushing the boundaries of what is expected in this market and reshaping the way in which the every day traveller can experience their journey. The 2015 winner of this award is Finnair’s Airbus 350XWB by dSign’s Vertti Kivi & Co. The Helsinki-based team have created a motif which is the first of its kind for a commerical aircraft. Futuristic yet functional, it is not only a marvel to be admired across the entire industry but furthermore, a firm example of the direction in which all aviation design will seek to take as passengers desire luxury for every price range. It is testament to the rich passion of dSign’s team that they were able to create an entirely original concept with which to inspire and inform their design as it was executed. The company rejuvenated the notion of commercial travel by developing their idea Space Alive which focused on the use of light as an active tool with which to alter the ambiance and all round comfort of the cabin for its passengers. A spectrum of lighting shades were programmed to time in accordance with the jets’ flight path. The result is a visual extravaganza which brings a new level of awakening to traditional travel. The light design encompasses the destination and the various time-zones the plane will cross during flight. The aura and culture of the environment above which the plane is cruising is brought into the cabin and surrounds passengers to bring them closer to the world across which they explore. For example. when approaching the Far East the cabin is flooded by warm, rich sunset tones, and when arriving in the Nordic countries the surfaces are lit with the cool, calming colours of Scandinavian sky, from Northern Lights to a clear blue sky. Never before has air-travel been experienced in such a optical, sensory way. As always, aircraft design offers many challenges, the weight of materials and viability for long-haul travel are highly restrictive . To overcome this dSign worked extensively to create a concept which was not only a design archetype but a functional, durable creation. The initial aspect of the project involved intensive research into possible solutions and instillations to
92 Luxe Et Al
facilitate the design. The team were ardent in their approach to sourcing ecologically sound and low-density materials with which to facilitate their vision for the project. Quality was not compromised nor expectation; the design was completed to the highest standard using high-end products for maximum effect. The rebranding of Finnair’s economy and business class cabins was fully-tailored to suit both the demands of the aircraft and the needs of its passengers. In order to maintain a sense of personal identity the main colour scheme utilises a fresh, clean blue and white palette with which to represent the Finnish skies and Nordic landscape. Finnair’s Vice President of Product Development, Jarkko Konttinen, explained the motivation behind the revitalization by saying, “Our aim is to provide a soothing, calming space for our customers, and give them a hassle-free travel experience. The lights, sounds and design of our premises, both on board our new state-of-the-art A350s and in our lounges at Helsinki Airport, all play an important part in this effort, while also communicating our unique Nordic identity.” dSign’s Space Air concept was so well received by Finnair the company commisioned the design to be installed on 11 of its international, long-haul flights with plans to further expand in coming months. At present the first A3050s will be used for the flights serving Shanghai, Bangkok and Beijing, with Hong Kong and Singapore A350 service to be added in 2016. The company have revealed the dSign’s A350 will form the backbone of the company’s long-haul fleet and trademark their luxury, unique style service. The originality and simplicity of dSign’s intelligent use of lighting for the Airbus A350 XWB is the brainchild of the company’s chief designer Vertti Kivi. Whilst it is absolutely a cinematic-esque concept, there are far more functional reasons behind its instillation. With the design proposed exclusively for Finnair’s long-haul flights, the idea was to gently improve passengers’ ability to acclimatise upon landing by easing customers on long-haul journeys into new time zones, destinations and seasons. The dynamic LED lighting system is programmed onboard to gradually recall some 24 different skyscapes as the flight progresses, mirroring light patterns of the rising or setting sun, various cloud
formations, and even the hypnotic dance of Nordic natural wonder of the aurora borealis; the northern lights. In addition to this groundbreaking light scheme, the Airbus A350 cabin also features an advanced pure air filtration system that changes the air in the cabin every few minutes. Draft-free air management, adjustable multiple temperature zones and a lower cabin pressure also enhance the wellbeing of passengers and crew on board; the primary aim of the entire project. Passenger comfort was the paramount concern in all aspects of the remarkable design and it is evident that a new standard has been set for commercial travel. The 297-seat configuration includes 46 seats in Business Class in a 1+2+1 layout, ensuring direct aisle access to all Business Class passengers. The Zodiac Cirrus III seats convert to fully flat beds for maximum relaxation on long-haul flights, while a 16inch touch-screen inflight entertainment system comes programmed with films, TV shows, music and other digital content on demand in numerous languages. Seats in Business Class also come equipped with AC and USB power outlets whilst all passengers have access to WiFi on board. The Economy Class cabin features comfortable Zodiac Z300 slim-line seats with a 31-inch seat pitch in a 3+3+3 layout. At the front of the Economy Class cabin are 43 Economy Comfort seats, with increased width headrests for improved support, highquality headphones and and an extra four inches of leg room. All seats in Economy include an 11-inch touch screen inflight entertainment system and USB power outlets; ensuring even the lowest fare prices benefit from enhanced comfort. In keeping with the aircraft’s nature-inspired design the eco-smart engineering of the A350 also brings more than 25 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and operating cost over the previous generation of aircraft in its class, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of Finnair and its passengers. This design is a true trailblazer for future airtravel and excellence in aviation. The dSign team’s unique, intelligent and creative approach to the project has remastered the way in which commercial airlines operate and the type of experience passengers can expect when boarding a long-haul flight. A truly exceptional design in every sense; this is a landmark design set to inspire future generations.

The innovative Sport Hybrid Collection is the ultimate dream for young, sea-loving enthusiasts and has been hot news since its presentation to the market. The semidisplacement all-aluminum yachts range from 25m to 65m and are powered by hybrid propulsion. Coupled with the aerodynamic light-weight hull, this system enables the yachts to run on generators at low speeds ensuring low environmental impact. Combining new, vibrant lines and cuttingedge design, the collection embodies a fresh and dynamic approach to yachting enhanced by spacious interiors and fantastically versatile open areas. The Sport Hybrid collection expresses Columbus Yachts’ approach of enjoying the sea while caring for the environment. As the first Hybrid boat of her kind, this all-aluminum yacht combines new lines and high technology whilst respecting the environment. The aim of the 40m sport hybrid yacht is to provide owners with a fast and sporty yacht without renouncing the comfort, elegance and style of a mega yacht. The sleek aggressive lines are designed to merge seamlessly with the environment
and work harmoniously with the interior. Sport indicates the high performance of the vessel, being equipped with two MTU engines and incredibly efficient hull lines she reaches 23 knots and easily cruises at 18-20 knots. The revolutionary hybrid propulsion system offers a new quiet and efficient way of yachting. With this green approach the owner can cruise slowly with the main engines switched off, transforming this high performance yacht into an incredibly quiet, fuel efficient and graceful superyacht. The addition of the folding balconies and beach club offers owners direct contact with the surrounding environment. The favourite key aspect of this project was the progressive exterior design. With it being entirely environmentally conscious, this yacht outsets the rest. Being said, Hydro Tec feel as if this helps the design work so well because she brings two different yachting approaches into one experience. Bringing the combination of high speeds and long range. With the addition of progressive styling and technological advances really makes this yacht a success in all categories.
