The fundamental aim in this unusual and striking design was to create something that would remain timeless and unaffected by the design trends that emerge and shift through time. To achieve this, emphasis was made on the surface transitions, creating lines that were neither sharp like contemporary designs nor as round as the classic yacht silhouette. The design was conceived to blend the two together in perfect geometric harmony. Although the design is a total of 63 metres long she embodies an extraordinary set of proportions that would usually be realised on a yacht of 80-100 metres. This is thanks to its entire main deck being embedded swiftly and smoothly into the hull.
16 Luxe Et Al
The design was completely orientated around the owner. Perhaps the most significant elements are the full-deck master cabin windows that rise above as wings, ingeniously allowing a balcony to slide out from underneath the cabin floor. This feature enables the owner to reach the sea without any contact with a guest or member of crew. It also means one can disembark the yacht and board the tender to indulge in a splendid open air environment without ever actually leaving the master cabin. At the rear there is a pool with an extended sunbathing area and a beach club with a transformable platform. The front of the vessel features a helipad that when not deployed can be folded underneath the deck, not cluttering the large open areas. The helipad and flybridge are covered with solar panels meaning the performance demand on generators is reduced making her greener than her competitors.

The Personification of a Truly World Class Lounge VIA Business Class Lounge by South African Airways Winner at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 Airport Lounge / Terminal

South African Airways passengers can now enjoy a stylish new domestic departures lounge: the VIA Lounge at OR Tambo International Airport, winner at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 in the category Airport Lounge/Terminal. Following months of extensive refurbishment, the new facility has been appropriately named VIA lounge, as the lounges are a transition point for travellers for their travel via the airport to the destination of their choice. The idea was that every new SAA VIA lounge would offer a uniquely different experience, drawing on the culture and cuisine of that particular region. The new lounge experience at OR Tambo affords travellers the opportunity to relax, unwind, work or even socialise in a stylish and comfortable environment that incorporates classic contemporary lines that drew on African earthy tones to compliment the SAA identity. This inviting lounge also makes use of design textures that delivered a premium quality experience and a welcoming space that was both a home away from home and an exclusive club.
“ Switch concluded that visitors to the lounge wanted a mental state of security from cleanliness all the way through to a warm greeting and easy wayfinding. It was their assumption that airport lounge design can go wrong when function follows form and the customer is alienated. ”
Instead of a formal reception, the public space and the reception area are integrated to form an approachable ‘meet and greet’ helpdesk. This transitional space reflects the start of the journey and SAA’s strategy in its service orientated approach whereby a visitor is guided towards the Platinum or Premium lounge. The interior environment was designed to create an open plan space that not only connected the traveller intuitively to the vast airport apron with interleading areas and large window panels, but also allowed them to be immersed in their own world of privacy with alcove highback pods and multiple power points backed up with up-to-date world class technology. With the focus being on the traveller being away from home, personal comfort zones, and a variety of seating arrangements for different personality types were introduced. From comfortable single seater chairs and ottomans to siesta chairs, stone walls, wood finishes, different weaves, textures and the genuine leather touches gave the space an impression of a truly international African feel. VIA Lounge features ample and comfortable seating areas, fresh cuisine options, a rotating art gallery showcasing South African artists, a Junior Pilots children’s area, runway views and highspeed internet. Soft leather bench seating with wooden mobile coffee tables perfect for laptops, enables travellers to quickly keep in touch with the world with their technology of choice, watching the world go by on the latest state-of-the-art LED TV or simply enjoy a quiet magazine read. In high contrast to the finishes in the lounge, the food and beverage area was designed with a deli experience in mind, offering quality, local and international cuisine. This area had to cater for high volumes of people so Thai food counters and islands were set against Moroccan inspired mosaic tiled floor displaying fresh and well presented food and the combination of African Ojet on the shelves against clean white metro tiles creates and truly international feel. The flow from the deli area was picked up in the dining area adjacent to the deli. Attention

to details was captured in bespoke hand crafted marble tables with hand turned, lathed wooden legs. The lounge design was completed by Switch, an award winning Johannesburg-based agency. They initially embarked on a domestic and International audit and through their findings they developed the conceptual design approach. Focusing on what was missing in airport lounges the areas highlighted for particular attention included the levels of service, comfort, longevity of design, and most important of all the human touch. Switch concluded that visitors to the lounge wanted a mental state of security from cleanliness all the way through to a warm greeting and easy wayfinding. It was their assumption that airport lounge design can go wrong when function follows form and the customer is alienated. Within their design, it was most noticeable that all materials had to be durable and needed to introduce a more distinct African flavour to the environment. The lounges were designed to be more relevant to customer’s business and lifestyle environments and Switch embarked on the journey to create a world class design, comfortable, contemporary and classic that would ensure longevity. As with all airport lounge build or refurbishment projects, the VIA lounge project held many challenges for the design and project teams. These included limited access to site during demolition and construction phases, airside security requirements and the stringent requirements of the landlord who understandably takes into account a fully operational terminal with thousands of passengers departing every day. The VIA lounge is a critical component in enabling South African Airways to deliver a world class African experience through warm hospitality. As the lounge is situated in the Domestic Departures Terminal it forms a critical component in the seamless business and platinum travellers journey as they utilise Johannesburg’s Oliver Tambo International Domestic Terminal as a hub for further travel inside of South Africa. That said, the intention to roll out the VIA lounge concept to other major airports in South Africa is there, with Durban and Cape Town obvious contenders. Gaby De Abreu, Executive Creative Director of Switch said, “We succeeded in creating a truly modern African Business Class Lounge with local relevance and global appeal.” The new domestic lounge is the perfect addition to SAA’s unique international arrivals lounge, ideal for passengers arriving from the UK who are connecting to a domestic flight. The international arrivals lounge offers customers the opportunity to freshen up and take a shower before making the short walk to the domestic terminal where, after clearing security, passengers can relax or catch up on work prior to their domestic connection. As the traveller sits comfortably in a grand repo chair, feet on a footstool, they can look out onto the concourse, sip a cappuccino listening to their wi-fi enabled ipod, surrounded by local artwork hanging from the walls. A discerning traveller will take note of details such as the johannesburg cityscape cutouts in the metal tables and the engravings on Zulu mama chairs and the studs in the soft luxurious classic leather upholstered bar stools. They would appreciate that this truly wonderful eclectic mix of African, contemporary and classic styles, overlaid with superior service, personifies the brand of a truly world class lounge.
Creating a Rival for the Modern World The Challenger by Maksym Shein Winner at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 Private Jet Concept Design

Maksym Shein’s The Challenger is celebrating their win in the category of Private Jet Concept Design Award in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016.
“ The service areas of the cabin are subtly differentiated by an accent of colour and contrasting materials. In addition to this, the service areas are separated by floorto-ceiling light panels in a bespoke design. ”
The premise of this concept evolved following considerable research of the business class sector of aviation and in particular aircraft used for the carriage of less than 10 passengers. This sector of the industry is well represented by the many successful products coming from the industry’s leading companies. Maksym Shein saw this as a further challenge, to find a worthy and yet, to date, under-used aircraft in order to create an innovative product. Based on these findings they concluded that the choice for this project would the USSR aircraft Antonov-38, and they intended to prove that this aircraft could be a rival in the modern world. The basis for the interior design would be a contemporary look. All aspects of the aircraft were considered during the process with special emphasis being placed on the cabin size, the desired technical equipment and of course the design had to reflect the certification requirements. Given that this aircraft was design for business travellers, the interior colour palette was established to reflect this, and therefore features a calming greyscale. The surface space of the cabin is separated by panels of mahogany; the greys and browns complement each other, giving the plane an elegant and sophisticated finish. The service areas of the cabin are subtly differentiated by an accent of colour and contrasting materials. In addition to this, the service areas are separated by floor-to-ceiling light panels in a bespoke design.

A notable feature is the unique shape of the bar, the galley and wardrobe. This is radial and provides an attractive and functional space for the passengers and an improved, more comfortable working environment for the crew. Continuity and fluidity is achieved as the ceiling panels connect all zones of the cabin. In the passenger’s section the central ceiling has additional radial panels that extend to the front and rear doors. The purpose of this unique ceiling plan is that it not only enhances the contemporary design of the jet but also serves as an increased safety feature, the ceiling panels markings provide clear directions to the front and rear entries and emergency exits. An additional safety feature is the hallway floor lighting scheme which is reminiscent of an airport taxiway centerline. Its function is much similar as that used to land an aircraft: in this setting it clearly directs passengers to the safest way to exit the aircraft. The cabin comprises eight business class seats, and each passenger has full access to the inflight entertainment (IFE) system. Additionally, provision has been made in the design for ample personal space for sitting back to read newspapers or magazines. As many business journeys are completed over a number of hours the crew have the opportunity to serve lunch or dinner. This re-design allows each passenger to enjoy the experience whilst also providing a positive working environment for the crew to complete their tasks to a very high standard. This concept jet is all about passenger convenience and comfort, and ultimately the private flying experience. Keeping passengers entertained was one of the main focuses of the concept. The safety and comfort of the passengers was at the forefront of the designer’s mind in the concept stage and throughout the implementation.

Convinced that good is never really good enough, Embraer Executive Jets started with a clean sheet of paper to design the Legacy 450, stablemate to the record shattering Legacy 500. The result: a new cutting-edge corporate jet that transcends all others in the mid-light class and winner at this year’s International Yacht and Aviation Awards in the category Private Jet Design. It is truly a remarkable union of technology and design offering digital flight controls with full fly-by-wire, the largest-in-class stand-up cabin, and class-leading stowage capacity and speed. It’s the kind of aircraft that emerges from not listening to conventional thinking – and instead, redefines what’s possible. The Legacy 450 isn’t an old jet dressed up in a new model number; it is a real game changer for the business jet industry. The interior design takes the high technology capability of the cockpit into the cabin zones. A blend of state of the art technology and meticulous, detail oriented craftsmanship makes it a modern, comfortable and user friendly environment.
“ Legacy 450 also performs extraordinarily well. Travelling at Mach 0.83, the Legacy 450 is the fastest mid-light corporate jet in the air. ”
This jet is a flawless union of technology and design. Optimally placed windows and ergonomic seating are only the start; the very latest in user-friendly features complement the Legacy 450’s stylish and comfortable interior. Large glass panels in the valence sections feature touch screen control and information monitors that merge modern styling with improved ergonomic function as well as reliable redundancy. Storage zones on the side ledges open like jewel boxes, framed by complex shaped machined accents. Floating surfaces allow for tasteful separation of materials that are crafted in the spirit of individually tailored elements chosen by the owner. With its ergonomic design for enhanced comfort, the Legacy 450 provides an experience which is a new definition of luxury and a feeling of freedom. The interior finishing is exceptional with areas of customized personalization. The modern interior design incorporates simplicity, transparency, light, and serenity to convey a feeling of sensual elegance. The luxurious use of the bespoke leathers by industry leaders Townsend Leathers, in particular the Classic Cowhide Taupe and Taj Cowhide Maroon, further enhances the sense of detailed styling throughout the project. Innovative interior finish materials create unique solutions for customers, such as stone flooring in wet areas and stone countertop. The project allowed a new look towards introducing innovative technology with regard to user interface, as well as manufacture and assembly methods and maintaining a comfortable, high luxury environment. The use of GD&T principles within the design create a perfect fit and finish quality and allow for maximum accessibility, thereby reducing assembly and

maintenance cost. The Legacy 450 is the only jet in its class to replace conventional controls with full fly-bywire technology; a pilot’s dream cockpit. This technology enables a smoother, more natural feeling flight by translating the manual input from the pilot electronically rather than mechanically. Electronic fly-by-wire systems increase the number of control surfaces that can be actuated simultaneously. This allows for maximum performance and control while reducing the pilot’s workload and creating a smoother flight for passengers. Additional flight envelope protection also increases flight safety. The Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 fly-by-wire system has received a prestigious Flightglobal Achievement Award in the Innovator of the Year category 2010. The flight deck is a comfortable and elegant advanced design which features a darkand-quiet design philosophy, large displays, and improved ergonomics and space to reduce pilot and crew fatigue. With sidestick controllers, a cleaner cockpit and better view of displays is achieved. There are also optional pilot sliding tables: two working surfaces add extra space in the cockpit with more storage capacity to improve comfort and productivity. The optional Embraer Enhanced Vision System (E2VS) further relieves pressure on the pilot while boosting their situational awareness. Legacy 450 also performs extraordinarily well. Travelling at Mach 0.83, the Legacy 450 is the fastest mid-light corporate jet in the air. It can take off and land on short runways, giving access to more airports worldwide. Incredibly, the aircraft can climb directly to 43,000 ft. (13,106 m.) in only 22 minutes, departing from sea level with maximum take-off weight. The Legacy 450’s flight altitude is 45,000 ft. (13,716 m.) At 6-feet (1.83 m.) tall and 24-feet (7.32 m.) long, with a flat floor, the Legacy 450’s cabin is the largest in its class. Two centre club seats fully berth to create beds, for undisturbed sleeping during the flight. The other seats, available with optional heating and massage, swivel and offer lateral and forward movement. The Legacy 450 seats a total of up to 9 passengers. Seats are also available with optional lumbar adjustment, leg rest and flexible wing. Foldable tables open flush with the side ledge, increasing the usual table surface area. This impressive craft offers unparalleled luxury for the epitome of flight experiences. An on board refreshment centre even provides a microwave oven and coffee brewer. The Legacy 450 is the only mid-light business jet with an optional wet galley. The wet galley features hot and cold water with a large ice drawer and optional crystal, china and silverware. The Ovation® Select ™ Cabin Management System gives full HD video, optional surround audio, Apple TV, and a wide range of connectivity options including 3.1 Mbps high-speed data and Wi-Fi connection.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? In general terms I feel design is increasing exponentially in its value to customers and manufacturers. More and more OEM’s equal each other out in technical and manufacturing capabilities and therefore find the primary differentiator is design which enables the character and personality of their brands to stand out. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. 1) Hide technology components that clutter the environment.

veneer and more trimmed surfaces in areas like bulkhead covers. This provides a more home-like environment. Then make sure they feel they have designed the interior instead of you. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? The field of design allows most designers to live personal and professional lives that blend. It is very important to shut off the work side of your mind but often the fun at home and with family involves sharing the ideas in both directions. However, empowering employees to help manage projects enables for work life balance.
2) Recyclable or sustainable materials. Still relevant. 3) Bio mimicry 4) Discrete personalization sandbox zones that “Wow” the customer when used. 5) Exoskeleton design. And key trends that we should be aware of? There are exciting developments in window systems and how we consider the external environment inside the aircraft. What projects are you currently working on? We have found much success in our Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 interior designs and due to this we are pushing this DNA into all of our products. Though I can’t specifically state which projects I have running I can say they are exciting and will break through what we consider aircraft interiors to be today. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? From an industrial design standpoint create canvases that allow the customer maximum material application diversity. From an interior design point of view I would present the customer with multiple design trends so as to gauge interest in novel vs. traditional schemes. Less

“ The owners input was to create an interior, which reflects the clear lines of the exterior design. The interior should be cool but relaxed and welcoming. Our aim is always to create spaces where people immediately feel comfortable and are not afraid or overwhelmed by to many different materials, colours or to much gloss and shine. ”
Silver Fast is the fourth and most recent superyacht built by Australia’s premier luxury yacht builder: Silveryachts. She is the most advanced, eco-fuel efficient vessel in the ground-breaking Silver series. Designed by Espen Oeino, one of the world’s most famous yacht designers, Silver Fast retains the super-sleek contour and unique hull lines of her much-prized predecessors but with a striking new all dark silver paint. At 77 metres (252.6 feet) with a top speed of over 27 knots in optimal conditions, Silver Fast is the world’s largest and fastest aluminium motor yacht with conventional propulsion in terms of length-to-speed ratio. Silver Fast is also the fastest long range cruising yacht: 4,500 nautical miles at 18 knots and 6,000 nautical miles at 14 knots with an already proven capability to effortlessly complete long passages in every sea state. She is capable of crossing the Atlantic at approximately 22 knots cruising speed, which is a record breaking performance. Silveryachts were extremely proud to have been entrusted to build and deliver a superyacht as stylish, high in performance and technically impressive as Silver Fast. The collaboration of the skills and guidance of designer Espen Oeino and interior designer Andreas Holnburger of Vain Interiors has achieved a fantastic result.
as one continuous line, thus emphasising the simplicity of the design and the overall length of the vessel”, said Oeino. Andreas Holnburger, the interior designer for Silver Fast said, “The owners input was to create an interior, which reflects the clear lines of the exterior design. The interior should be cool but relaxed and welcoming. Our aim is always to create spaces where people immediately feel comfortable and are not afraid or overwhelmed by to many different materials, colours or to much gloss and shine. Design is not just about impressing. “We always try to see the spaces we create as overall spaces with a certain theme. This is reflected in a well chosen colour scheme and all materials have to have a correspondence in another area as well. We would never change the materials for the bathrooms for example. If we have to make the Owners bathroom “richer” we would use more marble or bigger basins, for example.” He continued to say, “The colour palette was quite reduced on board. We used a lot of natural finished materials, contrasting with polished surfaces.”
Eepen Oeino has said he believes that the design works so well because the external appearance of a yacht is to a large extent determined by its internal volumes and the distribution of these. In the quest for speed alongside low energy consumption and therefore efficiency, the volume distribution of Silver Fast is arranged along the length of the vessel, rather than vertically, and therefore transversally for stability reasons as is the case with most yachts today.
The leather in warm grey and chocolate brown was natural toned anilin leather, which gets a very nice patina after a while. The wall panels where either covered with matt varnished teak or painted with a multilayered silver lacquer. Some cabins are fully covered with chamois leather. The floors, partially, and the stairwell are covered with handmade leather tiles, the rest of the floors are covered with hand woven silk carpets in warm grey with a craquelee pattern in the main salon. The ensuites have very smooth velvet sanded Corian wall panels and the floors and shower pans are made of dark brown polished Emperador marble.
“We feel that the objective has been met as most people seem to agree the external design is rather timeless. One specific feature is the sheer line which runs from the stern (top of the bulwark) all the way up to the bow
Some accessories were designed some accessories like door handles, porthole covers, leather tassels, tables, desks etc. especially for Silver Fast, but to get an overall look we used the same materials, leathers etc, as we used

on the wall panels for example. All the upholstery and chairs are from Italian furniture companies, as they have the best experience and expertise in comfortable seating. As we did the design concept for the exterior furniture and the design for the exterior bars as well, we tried to get the connection from indoor areas to exterior areas. The colour of the hull itself even reflects the grey colour scheme from the interior or vice versa. On Silverfast, we had not so much input designwise from the owner and could achieve a modern international style, with a lot of nice details, like the leather handles, leather covered wardrobes, handpainted silver panels etc. As we did not have to much input at the beginning it was quite interesting to develop the design concept.” SILVER FAST is the culmination of some 15 years of collaboration and dedication between the Hanseatic Marine, SILVER YACHTS team, SILVER FAST’S Owner and his designers. Over 550,000 man hours were invested specifically in the build of SILVER FAST to ensure the yacht met the very high exacting standards set out by the Owner and his designers in the project brief. The Owner challenged the yard to improve comfort levels from the already high standard of Smeralda. Light weight aluminium construction can challenge some yards in this area, yet comfort and performance has been the yard’s DNA since inception. The technical team set to work, drawing from significant databases of noise and vibration data from trials, then applying state of the art technology and selecting high performance equipment and systems, and the result is the most comfortable yacht in the Silver series. The triumphant SILVER FAST has benefited significantly from the Owners vision and commitment towards achieving constant improvements in the design, build and operation of the vessel, as well as his support and encouragement of SILVERYACHTS to take the same approach.

The unveiling of the MCY 105, the largest to date, coincided with Italian shipbuilder Monte Carlo Yachts’ five year anniversary, and the 32-metre flagship is the most tangible exemplification of the company’s vision, of Monte Carlo Yacht’s iconic, timeless style and the naval allure of its collection. Monte Carlo Yachts are now also celebrating as the Winners at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 in the category of Interior Design: Power Yacht. Featuring the MCY collection’s iconic design elements such as a perfect balance of the hull and superstructure, the MCY 105 is the result of a painstaking attention given to proportions, inherent dynamism of lines, and to every single detail, no matter how small. The MCY 105 is elegant and instantly recognisable: the imposing bulwarks and a high bow award the boat with the naval allure distinctive of the timeless MCY style.
“ In addition to its lavish interiors and sculpted exteriors, the beauty of the MCY 105 is its short, sixmonth build time, made possible by its advanced construction methods. ”
This yacht is the largest in the MCY collection The boatyard’s distinctive trait of creating spaces only available on megayachts is particularly evident here. Created by the design team of Nuvolari & Lenard with the active input of her Hong Kong owner, MCY 105 follows the exterior styling and aerospace construction methods pioneered in the company’s four earlier models. This has allowed the Italian yard to build to precise tolerances and this translates to extra square footage throughout the yacht. The yacht’s interior exhibits a contemporary flair and the interior spaces onboard are voluminous. The large Portuguese deck at the bow, and the flybridge with spacious and stylish living space are unmatched in its class. The unique and ergonomic raised Pilot House gives maximum comfort and the sense of space extends down backlit alabaster stairs to the 484 square foot master suite, which is located on the main deck. The overall impression of the master suite is one of space and light; this is enhanced by large floor-to-ceiling windows. This splitlevel suite at the bow is more like a spacious apartment than a cabin, with the upper level bed illuminated by a broad skylight. Brushedgrey-oak surfaces are paired with nubuck and African leathers inlaid with bronze. The bathroom suite is divided by a fabric panel, instead of a solid wall, providing privacy without impeding the sense of openness. Warm brown Tabaco Wave, a natural stone from Brazil, covers the floor

and shower walls and the stonework is framed by white Carrara-marble stripes. Enclosed toilets are divided by a large his and hers sink. The full-beam VIP cabin measures 333 square feet and is as spacious as many master suites found on larger yachts. One twin-bed cabin, another with triple bunks, and quarters for five crew members (accessed via a separate entrance) comprise the rest of the lower deck. The saloon mingles distressed-teak flooring with distressed-grey-oak walls with none of the wood being artificially treated or finished. Leather and marble accents are used sparingly and create an authentic and natural ambiance throughout the yacht. The flybridge space features a carbon-fibre hard top with a large opening in the centre. This outdoor living area houses two round tables for dining, and an outdoor grill and bar and at the aft end, two large lounges sit in the sunshine. This 753 square foot flybridge is the perfect location to enjoy alfresco dining. In addition to its lavish interiors and sculpted exteriors, the beauty of the MCY 105 is its short, six-month build time, made possible by its advanced construction methods. This approach allows the company to produce precisely built, highly customised superyachts in about half the time it would take other shipyards to turn out a production yacht of this size. Typically, the interiors of most motor yachts of this size are built in situ and over 100,000 man-hours are usually needed to complete the interiors. Due to Monte Carlo Yachts’ monocoque design the interiors of its boats are built in modules outside the hull on the shop floor where the craftsmen can work on all four sides of a project at once with tools and materials easily at hand. Not only is critical work done faster, it is also done better because the installation is not done in confined spaces. Wiring and plumbing are designed to be ‘plug-and-play’ and all of this results in tremendous savings in time and effort. The MCY 105 with its sporty profile and sculpted look is one of the most elegant yachts in the 100-foot range and this combined with spacious interiors, and decor from Hermès and Armani, along with custom furniture from Poltrona Frau, make it the ultimate expression of Monte Carlo Yachts style.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? Design moves and develops with the time. Designers, as well as artists, often anticipate the future with their visions and their creations. That’s why their work is fully understood years after their creations. Let’s wait and see… Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. Infinite lines; no quick solutions. Balance in shapes. Irony. A realistic approach. Contemporary art, as a vision on future times. Good design never expires.
Officina Italiana Design Chief Designer www.italianadesign.it
The name of the company that I founded 25 years ago with my associate Sergio Beretta is in fact OFFICINA ITALIANA DESIGN (Italian Design Workshop) to stress the attention on design as a form of work.
How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? I like to share my projects, in which I strongly believe and to know which kind of reactions they cause. It is always a good method to stay grounded. The final judgement is always given by the market but the competition itself is very exciting and a great incitement!
And key trends that we should be aware of? Environment protection, as a general awareness everybody must take good care of. Useful creations, in order to avoid mere selfreference. What projects are you currently working on? We are working on different boats for Riva and Sanlorenzo, in the range from 30 to 160 ft, as well as four new models. They will go on water in 2016, among them a 100 ft Riva and a 78 ft Sanlorenzo, both with flying bridges. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Simple lines with attention to detail. Creations must not go out of fashion quickly. The more the lines are simple, the more the design is strong. Less is more, in other words: it seems so ordinary and banal, but it’s not! It’s really the major effort of my daily work. A designer’s work is so diverse. How do you manage to hold down a career and a life? The designer is a job like all the other ones. Everybody deals with daily difficulties in managing work and life though I never saw career and life as two different and counterpoised things.
70 Luxe Et Al
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? To see on the water the boats we are currently working on and to see them appreciated by many customers. That’s the main satisfaction of our daily work.
Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself: The car you drive? Range Rover Vogue Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Italy Your favourite hotel? Grande Bretagne, Athens Favorite Restaurant? Ledoyen, Paris And Bar? Bar del Palazzetto under my home, with Gianna and the baby. The place that gives you the most energy? Greece And the place that enables you to totally relax? Eleuthera island in the Bahamas Your favourite food? Pasta aglio, olio, peperoncino e gamberi And drink? Red Italian wine Anything else interesting? Art.

Alessandra Pasqua Design Director of MAG Design Studio (Mecaer Aviation Group) What projects are you currently working on? We are currently working on an array of international VIP interior projects for mediumsize and small helicopters, and a project for a renovation of a power yacht interior. Just to mention one project, we are designing a helicopter VIP interior that includes a lavatory and an ample wardrobe. We are also very busy with an ongoing project within our company (MAG) that has ambitious goals, i.e. integration of design and manufacturing with state of the art technologies in a manufacturing 4.0 project. What projects have you recently completed? We have delivered several Bell 429 MAGnificent and a Bell 525 VIP mockup, as well as various style designs for a mediumsize helicopter and a restyling for a regional jet VIP cabin. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? We mostly work for the main OEMs of the helicopter and the business jet/ general aviation market, meet the final customer on behalf of the OEM. We also co-design with other design studios when they are the final point of contact with the customer. We are partners with Bell Helicopter on two VIP helicopter interior platforms for the Bell 525 and the Bell 429. Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? I see a variety of design approaches. On one hand style designers are moving towards seamless lines and shapes, emphasizing the quality of materials and luxury details, on the other hand there always has to be – and there is – an awareness of the final customer’s lifestyle and needs. This usually translates into a highly customized interior in terms of finishing choices, materials coupling, style solutions, or into special design solutions to cater for the customer’s taste. Very decisive customers would ask for the very same leather, carpet or fabric to be used on all their aircrafts, with the same material board, and for a translation of their signature style. But even if the final design schemes are very luxurious or classical or modern, I still feel that the main trends of style proposals for both business jets and mega-yachts tend to converge on a streamlined approach. The choice of colors and palettes always follows the main trends coming from the fashion sector.
Finally, design studios are trying to integrate in-flight entertainment and state of the art technologies to their best. However, not every creative and technological solution is necessarily appreciated by final customers: we always need to bear in mind that aircrafts fly and the passenger needs to feel safe. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond: In no particular order, these are the fundamental points:
which is congenial to the customer, a place of beauty and comfort, a place where you want to come back to, or a place that energizes your senses.

What products or services could you not live without when designing? In all steps of design the main tools are vital, especially because today’s work is so intense and hectic. For this reason, one shouldn’t to do without a proper 3D modeling and rendering software, to show advanced visualization to customers. Nor should we do without an image editing software and a performing Wacom tablet, able to give an edge to hand sketches, for the first steps of design. You also definitely need a wide assortment of samples, along with knowing how the manufacturing processes work.

Artificial Intelligence, nanotechnologies and manufacturing 4.0: in 10 years’ time the manufacturing of every item we design will be approached in a totally different way, as design will be. And the revolution has already started. I think it is something to bear in mind while we design. New materials are being created, and new ways to use these materials. New possibilities have opened. Always design for the customer, not for an ideal image of what you would like the interior to look like. But elaborate and propose. Think of the person that will live in the space you are designing and what emotions it will convey. Design for comfort. Comfort is achieved thanks to a good balance of various aspects: ergonomic and accessibility design, attention to details, appropriate choice of materials and good lighting design. Keep an eye on design communities and on similar markets: that is where new inspirations come from. Stick to your essential design philosophy, to your design DNA. Be faithful to what your design communicates. Trends and new ideas are only inspirational, they cannot drive the design.
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. I’m in love with Embraer’s legacy 500 interiors and with Achille Salvagni’s yacht interiors and amazing pieces of furniture. Their designs are both rich and essential, the combination of which creates elegance. Moreover, color schemes are chosen with extreme care. This impresses me particularly, because like most people I am very sensitive to colors. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? For both designers and prospective buyers, the main aim would be to create an atmosphere
As a designer please tell us the following... i. The place that gives you most inspiration: Open vistas, like endless green fields and blue seas. ii. The place you can relax: Home. Or a golf course. iii. The most inspirational design scheme/ project you have seen/visited in recent times: A hotel in New York, which has been recently restyled by a famous New York architect: interiors are trendy, essential, full of character. All amenities are integrated in the design. Any final thoughts? Art and design: my ultimate ambition is to collaborate with contemporary artists to create original designs. We’ve already experimented with this type of collaboration on two separate helicopter interior projects, with international artists like the German Claudia Wieser and the Australian Adrian Tranquilli. I would like to continue on this successful path.

Milan Rakic Founder & CEO, Aviation Resource Group What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? My feeling is that design is moving in a clean, simple, organic direction. While daily life is very fast paced, we find our customers are responding to environments that evoke a calm, harmonious experience. With cabin design we consider the natural environment at 30 thousand feet and design the interior to balance with nature, not to distract from it. Name some themes to consider when approaching design. Form/Function: There are many new technologies we are incorporating into aircraft cabins and want to blend into the environment without creating any unnecessary distractions. Keep it useful and simple. Nature: Blending natural elements while working in a modern design. Balance: Balancing the client’s needs while creating a design that complements and enhances the space. Breaking the Rules: Moving away from traditional finishes and moving into something unexpected and elegant. And key trends that we should be aware of? In terms of private aviation design, lighting is becoming an important feature in regards to interior upgrades and design retrofits. With the introduction of LED lighting into the aircraft cabin we are able to further enhance the mood of the design by using different temperatures of light. What projects are you currently working on? We currently have a Falcon 900 in full refurbishment: exterior paint design, installation of winglets, complete new interior, as well as wifi and other cabin management enhancements. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Keep it simple. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Design is more my passion and not my core business (which is purchasing and selling private aircraft). When I get to work with a design project it is a form of stress release which adds a much needed balance to my life. That and the fact that my wife Teresa is very much a part of all of my design decisions brings a personal aspect and balance between my work and personal life. How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? I think it is a high honour to be selected and recognized by an international design panel in our category. Specifically for us, it provides a unique opportunity to showcase a niche part of our business internationally and make connections in different fields of design. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself... The car you drive: I am a car guy, I love cars as much as airplanes – I am currently driving a Porsche Cayenne S & Ferrari 458. Your favourite place to travel to in the world: Any place which I have never previously visited. Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar: Hotel is “The Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca NYC” and the bar in the hotel drawing room is definitely my favourite hotel bar. The place that gives you the most energy: New York City And the place that enables you to totally relax: Skiing in Vail Colorado. Your favourite food and drink: Without a question Pizza and a great glass of red wine. www.aviationresource.aero

Elisabeth Harvey Design Director Jet Aviation Design Studio What projects have you recently completed? We have just completed an amazing promotional design launched at the European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition in Geneva. The Jet Aviation Base Design Studio was responsible for bringing to life two diverse, yet complementary design schemes, one for a B787-9 and one for an A350-900 aircraft, against the backdrop of showcasing our design process. The highlight of this was a film, created in co-operation with ACA Advanced Computer Art, which shows how we as a Design Studio reach a highly bespoke and custom designed interior, from the very first sketch to final delivery of the aircraft to our customer – every element considered and designed with our client in mind. Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? In the specialized field of private aviation interior design, I see our clientele taking more advantage of the luxury of speed and space in creating the most sophisticated and tailor-made interiors for our clients. It’s a move towards what I call “ultra-aircraft” design: the ultimate interiors for our clients in terms of comfort, functionality and luxury. The future is about consolidating aviation design with lifestyle – a discipline which stands proud alongside high-end residential and super-yacht design, able to meet the needs of the most demanding clients with sophisticated design and creative technical solutions, with the highest attention paid to every detail. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond: 1. More refined use of interior space and proportion. Bedrooms and bathrooms are extended to be much more than functional spaces, but areas in which to fully relax. Dining and living spaces merge and cooking preparation moves away from commercial aviation, becoming more elegant and multifunctional. 2. The search for ultimate comfort in the air. As flying times increase, so do the requirements for enhanced sleeping, relaxing dining and entertainment possibilities in the interior. 3. Technology and innovation will be enhanced. No longer an add-on to the design
at some secondary stage, technology will be integrally designed within the backbone of the interior, and remain predominantly hidden from view. 4. Designing fully with the aircraft in mind. Unlike home and yacht design, exterior parameters are set in aviation. We’re challenged to work with the existing space and create something surprising and unusual with the layout to enhance the experience one has in the interior. This lends scope for optical illusions to come into play. 5. Sustainability takes on a new focus. Whilst our interiors are entirely bespoke and necessarily luxurious, using only the finest materials, all components are respectfully integrated into the interior, with the quality of build and finish giving each aircraft a true longevity that can be appreciated for years into the future. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. I find any design which challenges traditional thinking particularly inspiring. Perhaps a good example would be Abu Dhabi’s new Louvre museum designed by Jean Nouvel. For me it is about quality in its highest form, with function and aesthetics achieving a standard beyond the ordinary. With regards to aviation interior design, it is much more than making the space look stylish and attractive; it is about understanding and working with the full potential of the space and enhancing our client’s living experience in flight. What products/services could you not live without when designing? For me, a soft lead pencil, a graphics tablet, a passion for design and an enquiring and detailed mind are essential to create industry-leading private aircraft cabins. As a designer, what is the place that gives you most inspiration? I find that anywhere where I can appreciate both the wonder and force of nature particularly inspiring. That may be sitting with a cool glass of wine watching the sun set over the Mediterranean sea in the south of France, appreciating a fierce thunderstorm at the end of a hot summer’s day in my hometown of Basel or watching as the wide open expanse of the Russian Steppe unfolds beneath me as I fly, for example, from Beijing back to Switzerland.

Tray Crow Director of Interior Design, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation
What projects are you currently working on? As the director of interior design for Gulfstream, I am proud to lead a team of talented designers who are up to the challenge of creating and delivering the world’s finest aviation experience. That means we balance a wide range of projects every day. We may meet with a client to work with them on their design scheme or we may do research behind the scenes, developing interiors that incorporate the latest technology and reflect the future of interior design. We have more than 30 degreed interior designers who collaborate closely with engineering, as well as the furniture and upholstery craftsmen and women to experiment with new ideas. Right now, we are developing final interior styling details for our two newest aircraft, the Gulfstream G500 and G600. We announced the aircraft in 2014 and have been working closely with our customers to ensure the interior exceeds their expectations. During the announcement event at our headquarters in Savannah, Georgia, we debuted a cabin showcase, a full-scale cabin mock-up that reflected the initial interior design for the G600. We spent the next year inviting our clients to see the showcase and gathering their feedback on it. With their input, in 2015 we revealed a new interior that incorporated their design decisions. Overall, the new interior reflects 200 design changes they helped us make. And we’re still not finished. Throughout the summer, the showcase has been travelling to business aviation airports around the United States, so we can continue gathering feedback on it. When the first G500 and G600 aircraft are delivered to customers in 2018 and 2019, respectively, they will reflect the work of countless people – clients, designers and engineers alike – who collaborated to create carefully crafted interior that dazzles and delights
Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? While neutral interiors still tend to prevail, we are seeing a rise in interiors with more opulence. A focus on detailed accents, whether it be a highly detailed stitch on a seat accent or a metal inlay in veneer, is becoming more prevalent. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? In working with clients, I often advise them to select what they love. Many of our clients spend a significant amount of time in their interiors and they should be surrounded by an interior that delivers the ultimate in comfort, adapts to changing needs during the flight and provides convenient control of the cabin. What products/services could you not live without when designing? I could not live without our employees! I work with a talented and experienced team of Gulfstream craftsmen, engineers and designers who deliver high quality solutions to our clients, making complex concepts and designs seem easy. As a designer please tell us the following: The place that gives you most inspiration: We travel the world extensively meeting with our clientele. It is hard not to be inspired by the varied places we visit. The most inspirational design scheme or project you have seen or visited recently: I recently spent a week in Cape Cod in a friend’s restored Walter Gropius home, and the design is as relevant today as it was when it was built in the 1960s. The way Gropius framed the landscape is masterful, capturing the movement of the shoreline and the tension of the changing tides. There are common elements to timeless designs like his that continue to inspire me and carry over into the designs we cultivate at Gulfstream.

Adam White Creative Director, Factory Design
What projects are you currently working on? Many, but sadly all confidential, as is the way with aviation What projects have you recently completed? Etihad A380 and B787 cabin design, Four Seasons B757 interior What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Etihad, TAG Aviation, Four Seasons and many talented suppliers Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? To infinity, and beyond... Well, not quite, but I think I can confidently say that the days of customising a seat and doing a trim and finish overhaul being satisfactory are over. That having been said, it takes deep pockets to change an entire cabin interior, but as airlines pressurise aircraft and equipment makers to be ever more innovative, they have to respond with being ever more flexible; the customer is always right, and as such you cannot differentiate brand with a simple makeover, and an extra inch or two on pitch. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond: •
The clarity of your vision: who exactly are you designing for? What defines them?
•
What might be available tomorrow that is
just a dream today. •
What will have changed for the passengers in 4 years time at launch.
•
Consider solutions that have wit as well as technical excellence.
•
Innovation: now is the time…
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. Etihad A380. At launch, this was and remains the most highly customised cabin interior flying in commercial aviation, and everything we introduced has improved in some way the flying experience for Guests. This effort was egalitarian in that our interest in improving the experience across all classes was echoed by a supportive client and we brought innovation into the aircraft at many levels. Whilst we look very hard at improving the flying experience by technical innovations and clever architecture, we like to try and delight people as well. When you walk along the aisle in First Class, the ceiling has lit panels with a pattern designed to suit the modern, Arabic look of the airline. As you walk past, tiny projectors shine the illuminated pattern on you from the ceiling above. The mind is tricked into a sense that the dappled light is from the lit panels, which are an interpretation of the sun flickering through the leaves of a date palm. It really is a delightful moment when you notice it as you walk through.
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Always, always, always try to think of something that hasn’t been done before, and back it up with a way to do it now.
What products and services could you not live without when designing? Obviously my partners and company, peopled by amazing talent and computers I can’t even turn on, let alone operate. But for myself, a little time out to think and a pen to make scribbly sketches with. As a designer please tell us the following: i. The place that gives you most inspiration: When I am not walking around a city like London, it would be the internet where a virtual walk is always on offer, around pretty much most things. ii. The place you can relax most: On a plane. Or riding a motorcycle. Or building an engine. iii. The most inspirational design scheme or project you have seen or visited in recent times: A sculpture by David Cerny in Prague, of Franz Kafka’s head. This might seem abstract but look at it on Youtube and look at the simple narrative. It has enormous clarity in both its concept and in its implementation. All 45 tons of it. Any final thoughts? The world of aircraft cabin interior design has changed significantly in the past decade as a result of commercial pressures and is pretty much the most exciting place to work now. It keeps us busy and happy, a lucky place to be. However we would quite like to do a luxury yacht if there are any takers?

Shiree Darley CEO/Founder, Darley Interior Architectural Design What projects are you currently working on? • Business and First Class Lounges for Dubai International Airport: we have been very privileged to have been Dubai Aviation’s preferred Designer for numerous areas of the Airport over the past 7 years. • A wonderful project in Saudi Arabia which includes four 5 Star Hotels based on Four Seasons Standards – the location is Madinah. Inspiration for the interior design direction is drawn from the natural elements that make up the serene landscape of the historic city of Madinah, using the four towers provided and basing the theme of each tower on the imagery brought about by four rivers – one of water, one of milk, one of grape and one of honey. • High-end Residential Villas on the beautiful golf course at the Anahita Resort, Mauritius. These will have a sublime sea view when complete! • The Anahita Resort Spa, to be operated by Thermae, will features a design based on the Tea Ceremony which is part of the traditional history of Mauritius. • Executive Offices for Telesure – the head office of the largest Insurance Company in South Africa • Some high-end residences in Johannesburg, South Africa. What projects have you recently completed? Concourse 4 at Dubai International Airport – this new building is to accommodate the increased number of passengers arriving at the airport since the introduction of the A380 and includes Lounges, Business and First Class Lounges, Dining Areas and Quiet Rooms. There is also an Automated People Mover which transports passengers to the main terminal and Passport Control. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? • Dar Al Handasah Architects – we have a wonderful relationship with them and have worked on projects with the Beirut, Dubai and India. • Alteo Property and Hospitality • Macbeth Architects and Designers • D’Unienville & Associates • Arup Sigma • Hooloomann & Associates Ltd • Betts Townsend Project Managers
Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? Travelling, though very exciting, can often be stressful. The travelling experience starts from the moment one enters the airport. DIAD believe that the more streamlined the experience is, the happier the traveler will be. This means connectivity, freely available wireless, easily accessible amenities and facilities and logical interactive Way-finding to maximize the flow of passengers creating a sense of calm and comfort for the traveler. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. The utilization of sustainable and ecoconscious materials and construction methods 1. Selecting and specifying local materials, furnishings and shop-fitting to reduce our carbon footprint; air freight and shipping costs, for example. 2. Fast-tracking the design process to be able to provide our clients with the necessary information, expediting construction and implementation to minimize development finances. 3. Less fuss and frills by focusing on elements within the design of spaces that address the individual’s logical, physical and functional needs and their emotional needs resulting in a holistic experience. 4. The careful and clever incorporation of products and technology within interior spaces that allows for easy adaptability and therefore the best possible long-term outcome. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. The design scheme that the DIAD team have put together for the “Milk” Hotel Tower in Madinah is gorgeous. It is such a beautiful combination of a delicate, soft, tone-ontone colour palette set against a backdrop of detailed paneling and mosaic inlays, with soft ambient lighting and the cooling sound of trickling water-walls. It is a relaxing respite from the desert journey of the pilgrims. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Make sure you do the necessary research to gain a thorough understanding of your client and through their brief and requirements
(including budget) design the spaces to accommodate the human factor. Apply a sense of logic to every space but explore unique and novel, although functional spaceplanning and design detailing for the interiors. What products and services could you not live without when designing? Our design team is crucial of course, but we do rely heavily on the available IT technology including AutoCAD, Revit, In Design and Illustrator. Then as most of our projects are international, the speed and capacity to transfer information around the world is imperative. As a designer please tell us the following: i. The place that gives you most inspiration: For every project DIAD designs we find inspiration from the surrounding landscape, local fauna, flora, culture of the people and their lifestyles. We always aim to introduce a sense of identity relative to the project location and love to showcase the artwork and craftsmanship of the local talent. ii. The place you can relax most: At home in our beautiful indigenous garden surrounded by our array of birds and animals which include dogs and horses. iii. The most inspirational design scheme or project you have seen or visited recently: The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi: the detail is exquisite and the construction “unites the world”, using artisans and materials from many countries including India, Italy, Germany, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, Malaysia, Iran, China, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Republic of Macedonia and United Arab Emirates. More than 3,000 workers and 38 renowned contracting companies took part in the construction of the mosque. Natural materials were chosen for much of its design and construction due to their long-lasting qualities, including marble, stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics. It was built by the Italian company Impregilo.

Katharina List-Nagl CEO, F/List What projects are you currently working on? We are currently working on four interior projects for mega yachts in Europe as well as programs for narrow- and wide-body aircraft, for customers like Bombardier, Embraer, Fokker, Pilatus and many more. Since 2004 we have delivered more than 1000 interiors for aircraft all around the globe. What projects have you recently completed? As we are bound by nondisclosure-agreements, we cannot publish project names or their owners. But we can reveal the completion of a 156m yacht in May of this year with a finishing space of around 6000 m². The business aircraft projects are actually programs that have terms for around 7 years. In that period of time we deliver up to 400 aircraft interiors of one type. In addition, we delivered our famous stone products and wood floorings for a Boeing 787 completed at Greenpoint near Seattle that was presented to the public for the first time in May during this years EBACE (European Business Aviation Convention) in Geneva. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? All yacht interior projects are operated in cooperation with our former sister company List General Contractor (LGC). F/LIST develops, engineers and produces all the furniture and metal components while LGC acts as turnkey supplier for the whole interior package including stone, glass, fabric, leather deliveries, amongst others.

For Aviation projects we deal with many different partners like FACC, Danzer and Böhlke as wood veneer suppliers etc. Where do you feel private jet design is going in terms of interior schemes? Every area in the world has its preferences regarding design. F/LIST is only “consultant partner” for design, as customers specify their business jet together with the aircraft manufacturer and yacht customers are working closely with famous yacht designers. We advise customers and designers regarding materials and technical constructions. But our main focus is to manufacture whatever the customer desires: mostly unique, very exquisite and very sumptuous desire, at that. Whether driving, flying or sailing, we develop an affinity with our carefully chosen means of travel. They don’t just get us from A to B, they also move us emotionally. Designers of these highly desirable modes of transport specify only the very best components throughout the construction process and they don’t compromise when it comes to the coating which will give their creation the aesthetic appeal that it deserves. They want a coating that is available in any color, including custom finishes, that has the durability to withstand the rigours of any environment, anywhere in the world; they want a coating that can be applied to any material, produced by a manufacturer operating at the forefront of coatings technology; and they want a product that can be bought with the complete confidence that only an unmatched global track record can bestow. These coatings are all available from one source: AkzoNobel Specialty Coatings. www.akzonobel.com
IMPOSSIBLE IS JUST A DARE. At Embraer, we find inspiration in the greatest of challenges. The creation of entirely new aircraft, and categories. And the inclusion of technology previously unavailable in aircraft this size. The better way. The efficient way. The unconventional way. You see, we’ve never been ones to settle for the status quo. And we’re looking for those who share a similar mindset and are willing to act upon it. Because we believe for those who do — doing the impossible is just the beginning.
Rethink Convention.
