With just weeks now until voting for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2016 opens, I can scarcely believe another year has passed so fast. In 2015, more than 8,500 of you voted for these awards, which are really engaging an industry.
Over the coming months we would like to really look in detail at the vital components that make up an interior scheme, whether it be for a super yacht or aviation interior scheme, our newly launched ‘Luxe et al Recommends” area of the issue will look closely at the recommendations of those in the industry, but more than this, over the coming months we will expand this area to look at key directions, inspirational schemes and innovations in much greater detail. Why? Q uite simply because we are a design magazine and this means right down to the very last detail of the very last light switch.
We have dedicated this issue and next month’s issue to this year’s short-listed contenders. We will be taking a sneak preview at some of this year’s schemes, from power yachts to concepts aimed at the future, and from private aviation to interior schemes over the coming issues we will share all with you.
I am looking forward to personally bringing a complete design title to the yacht and aviation sector. Your input as always is most welcome. Until next month Joanne

Yacht and Aviation News Ferretti Group Celebrate with their biggest yacht in the Custom Line Series In celebration of Ferretti Group’s Custom Line 20th anniversary, the Italian builder unveiled its plans for the Navetta 42, launched the new Navetta 37 and announced future plans for the Custom Line semi-displacement series at this year’s Miami International Boat Show. The 42-metre Navetta 42 is the first Custom Line ship over 300 GT and is set to be launched in 2018. The new ship is designed by Rome based Studio Zuccon International Project under the guidance of the Ferretti Group’s Strategic Committee and developed by the inhouse Engineering Department. The semi-custom yacht will offer plenty of space over four fully customisable decks including a spacious owner’s suite on the main deck and a versatile lower deck suitable for four VIP or five regular suites. The separate crew area can accommodate six crew, with a private captain’s cabin located next to the bridge on the upper deck. The stern area will offer a beach club at sea level, providing plenty of relaxation space and a side-opening garage, perfect for water toys. Five different engine options are available for the 42, with a transatlantic range of more than 3,000-nautical miles at an economical cruising speed of 10 knots. According to the yard, the well-designed layout of the new Navetta 42 “will ensure the most efficient organisation of on-board flows, offering total privacy for the owner and the guests, and great freedom of movement for the captain and the crew.” The Custom Line Navetta 42 will be the biggest yacht in the series, which also includes the Navetta 37, the Navetta 33 Crescendo and the Navetta 28.
Etihad Airways “The Residence” VIP – Factory Design The world’s first and only totally private, luxury three room suite on a commercial aircraft. Set over 125 sqft, offers lounge, bathroom and bedroom. Etihad Airways stated its ambition to be the ‘Best airline in the World’ and outlined a vision for the project that would build on their success and continue to redefine airline travel. This meant that the airline wanted to disrupt the status quo in the industry and create a unique guest experience that would reflect the exciting vision of Abu Dhabi. After a global pitch, Etihad Airways asked three agencies to work together to deliver their challenging ambition. The EDC - Etihad Design Consortium - was created bringing together three companies, Acumen Design Associates, Factorydesign and Honour Branding. Factorydesign was tasked to design the passenger experience and cabin interior such as galleys, lavatories and passenger destination zones. EDC was asked to develop an overall vision for the aircraft based on the airline’s successful ‘Inspired Service’. The vision was to bring the individuality and exclusivity of a ‘Luxury Boutique hotel experience – that embraced Arabian modernism’. The Residence is the first ever VIP product proposition on a commercial aircraft. There are three dedicated ‘solid state’ zones : Lounge/ Bathroom/ Bedroom just like an exclusive hotel room and is certified for two people - an unprecedented travel experience. The Residence has a completely enclosed, private double bedroom. It has a bedside table with two personal storage drawers and also a full length wardrobe. The most spectacular feature is probably the layering of adjustable mood lighting. A fretwork-inspired mood light along the length of the bed is combined with a ‘dappled-light’ projection on the curved ceiling and an under bed mood light. Together these provide an enchanting ambience. Also there are three separate and unique colour schemes with unique table marquetry and carpet designs for each.

Officina Italiana Design Shortlisted in the International Yacht and Aviation Awards Power Yacht 25-40m with Riva 88’ Florida The 88’ Florida is, like many of its predecessors, the result of the close cooperation between Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee, the Group’s Engineering Department, and yacht designer Mauro Micheli, the co-founder, together with Sergio Beretta, of Officina Italiana Design, which exclusively design Riva’s entire range. All décor solutions explicitly draw inspiration from late 80s-early 90s atmospheres, paying tribute to some iconic Riva yachts of those times, like the Bahamas - the first to be pencilled by Mauro Micheli: the yacht is pervaded by is a warm Mediterranean style, which the Italian designer himself summarized using the term vintage, reinterpreted in a contemporary mood. The spiritual heir to the Riva Bahamas, the Riva Florida is a revolutionary yacht because it marries the open and coupé concepts in one effortless package, thanks to its simple but effective Convertible Top system. Premiered in spring 2015, it has magnificently sporty, streamlined lines which brilliantly complement the convertible superstructure concept. The original windows running along the hull draw plenty of light into the interior and together, with the silvery livery, create a line that accentuates the Florida’s raked sleekness. The ‘Convertible Top’ patented system makes the 88’ Florida truly one of a kind in the entire yachting sector because of the innovative system that harmonizes two sporty souls on-board one single yacht: an exclusive Ferretti Group patent that has been installed for the very first time on this craft. This yacht personifies style, elegance and technology combined with impressive power and speed. An open and a coupé: two souls, entwined in one single, spectacular yacht.

Facheris Design Shortlisted for the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 Concept over 40m Creating a subtle accord between generous dimensions and a fresh profile, Facheris Design has created the Aqueous 120. Utilizing design in its purest state, the process was a study of form commenced by hand with planning and ideation sketches in the same manner used in car design and styling. The proportions and aerodynamics of the design were then assessed through modelling to achieve a silhouette which is the driving force behind the passion and emotion of the super yacht. An impressive 400 square meter after deck offers a large infinity pool, a retractable awning covering part of the deck and a double lounge seat and bar. Integrated are two large garages holding two 11 meter limo tenders, a jet ski and additional leisure equipment to enhance the ultimate yachting lifestyle. The forward deck includes a large sun pad and jacuzzi, long considered integral features for on-board relaxation. A notable design feature is the transformative capacity of the sun pad, which can be turned into a helicopter landing pad. The concept promotes a modern use of materials with glass featuring prominently throughout the superstructure and hull, maximising the amount of natural light permeating each cabin, as well as the salon and entertainment spaces. This expansive visibility creates a synergy between the interior and exterior worlds. Furthermore, the Aqueous 120m will be powered by an environmentally responsible hybrid propulsion system, which will result in fewer emissions. The connections between all the typical elements of a superyacht are integrated into a unique profile that does not compromise the interior volume.
Sea Shadow by Splinakis Ship Design Splinakis Ship Design have been shortlisted for a Concept over 40m Award In The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016. The main target of the Sea Shadow concept design was to study, develop and reach a solution suitable to offer large and comfortable spaces for guests, both on the indoor private and common areas and on the outdoor spaces. To reach the target, Splinakis Ship Design adopted the idea, already investigated in a previous design, to use the lower deck as free-board deck, so that the 4 guest cabins located on the lower deck have a dedicated common balcony with foldable bulwark possible to be used as beach platform. The outdoor common areas have been designed to offer as large space as possible suitable to accommodate all guests without generating a feeling of a crowded environment. The elements that guided the Sea Shadow’s interior design were the search for comfort and a sober and elegant style. This has been obtained with the use of clean lined furniture and warm natural textures of wood, leather and fabrics. The juxtaposition of these warm materials against the coolness of steel, marble, backlit onyx and glass, creates a modern, understated but luxurious feel . All of these elements are tied together by the clever use of lighting which illuminates the space with a soft cosy hue. The two designers, Simona and Andrea, met by chance, after more than twenty years, in a shopping centre, deciding, within minutes, to cooperate in yachts and ships design. This is their first joint project: a challenge, a bet.

AMELS continues its revolution in yacht building continues with the introduction of the innovative 57.70 metre AMELS 188 (970 GT) to its Limited Edition range. The nearly century old Dutch luxury yacht builder’s completely new superyacht joins the 55 to 83-metre Limited Editions range, now with six unique designs all built to the absolute highest AMELS quality.
“Our clients have been tremendously excited about this yacht,” he says. “If you look at the 55-metre AMELS 180 and the 60-metre AMELS 199, they are both unique and very successful designs. The 57.70-metre AMELS 188 fits perfectly between these two yachts, bringing something entirely new to a market segment that we have traditionally show leadership in.”
This is its first hybrid offering combining advanced solutions including hybrid electrical power with the modern elegance. AMELS 188 has been designed to reduce operational costs and environmental harm, the yacht’s hybrid propulsion works in tandem with a heat-recovery system to reuse energy on board.
Each model within the range has its own identity, and within the concept of The Limited Editions the customer may choose the interior designer to create their own individual vision of yachting at the highest level, bringing the unique vision of each owner to life. For the AMELS 188 the design duo of Reymond Langton were invited by AMELS to create their vision of the yacht’s impressive interior styling. Convinced by Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton’s reputation for attention to detail, their stunning design concept surpasses all expectations, renewing constantly with living, breathing spaces that invite the customer inside. Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design said of the new project, “It’s challenging, because we’re used to designing for individuals. Have to look at design in different ways when designing for a [semi-custom] product.” She describes the interior concept of the AMELS 188 as having some areas of calm, some with drama and a contemporary but not cold motif. The interiors are distinguished by a spacious beach club, a full-beam owner’s suite, and a wellness centre with a gym, a sauna, and a Turkish steam shower.
The concept behind the Limited Editions was for the customer to buy into the creation of their own personalised yacht at whichever stage suited them.
“ Tim Heywood’s Philosophy of ‘form and function’, which fitted perfectly with AMELS approach to provide an excellent solution whilst always encouraging innovation. ”
AMELS handle the time consuming technical aspect so that the client can enjoy focusing on the interior design, working with the interior designer of their choice. The AMELS building process is a result of a wealth of experience from generations of workers dedicated to producing an excellent product. The joy of their craftsmanship is evident to the customer in the finished product. Using tried and tested engineering construction processes, the Limited Edition range are created to a higher quality, with lower technical risk and have a significantly faster delivery time than a fully custom-built yacht. Widely acclaimed as the master of exterior design, Tim Heywood brought his philosophy of ‘form and function’ to the project, which fitted perfectly with AMELS approach to provide an excellent solution whilst always encouraging innovation. The Limited Editions have taken this signature for design and have long bows and low superstructures which answer the functionally requirement but then with a form of muscular feminine style. While she carries forward the familial look of the Limited Editions line-up, Heywood pointed out tweaks such as moving the hand rails and guardrails outward aft, which makes decks look grander, and adding windows in the aft door, which “makes a big difference when cruising as gives more light [to the interior].”

Yacht Carbon Offset Naturally, many of those who own or enjoy a superyacht love the natural and marine environment and are passionate about having minimal impact. So, with the current focus on the response to climate change, there has never been a better time to consider greenhouse gas emissions. Yacht Carbon Offset offers a practical, effective way to counteract greenhouse gas impact whilst preserving cruising freedom. No onboard equipment is required: Yacht Carbon Offset calculates CO2 emissions based on the fuel quantity used, whether for a full season or a single trip, and for any yacht, classic or new, motor or sail. Emissions are then counteracted with equivalent greenhouse gas reductions achieved by independently verified green energy projects. The offset payment – typically less than 2 eurocents per litre of fuel - financially supports the green energy project and in exchange, the emission reductions are allocated to the yacht, with a Certificate showing exactly what’s included. Transparency is essential, so Yacht Carbon Offset has a fully-documented procedure which is regularly audited to maintain Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification. Clients can if they wish select individual projects for support, and can extend the scope of their personalised programme beyond the yacht to include associate flights, shore power, or indeed other aspects of their luxury lifestyle. Perfect for today’s more eco-aware yachting families and for high profile guests. www.yachtcarbonoffset.com

Regardless of the demanding conditions at sea and specific design realization requirements that raise the standards for a responsible approach to the safety of the installations, PRECISOA’s vast experience allows there to be no limitations to any ambitious project. Their work is evident in the designer light fittings for some of the most luxurious cruise liners in the world – The Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean International, or private yachts, one of which be is the longest superyacht in the world. An example of PRECISOA’s work can be seen on the luxurious yacht Queen Mavia where the Main Salon, Master Stateroom, Main Dining Room and Main Foyer are decorated with charmingly gleaming ceiling and pillar light fittings and decorative cut glass tiles, this design is repeated on parts of the ceiling and the lights themselves. The voluptuous shapes of the light objects are set into golden tones that brilliantly underline the decks’ overall luxury. Moreover, as with every customized light fitting, the project for Queen Mavia was of course meticulously tested for endurance of the objects, for example against high waves’ impact, higher speed of the yacht or air humidity. www.preciosalighting.com

In July 2015 Cruiser Yachts launched their flagship Cantius 60’. The project was a partnership with Facheris Design in collaboration with De Basto Designs. The design brief for this project was to offer exceptional space, layout, comfort and performance in a design unique from previous cruisers models. The client was looking for a modern, aggressive, euro-styled look that would maintain interior spaces and ergonomics. The design allowed for large interior spaces without compromising the overall proportions of the profile. The full beam master stateroom is possibly the largest in class with a total deck space of over 244 sq. ft. (23 sq. m), and contains a king size bed, something that is not always possible in boats even of this size. The headroom is full standing height for the entirety of the cabin, innovatively, it was not necessary to drop the deck between the stringers in order to provide that, and as a result, the entire master cabin deck is on one level.
“ The yacht’s design features sophisticated and luxurious appointments….. The result surpasses a sporty, affluent yacht. ”
Below deck, the accommodation of the new Cantius 60 measures over 39’ (11.9 m) from the crash bulkhead forward to the master stateroom’s aft bulkhead, separating it from the engine room. When standing at the helm, once again have full height headroom is realised, and the large wind-shield and side window offer expansive visibility. The Cantius 60 has no fewer than five entertaining venues including the graceful bow with reverse crescent seating, port and starboard sun lounges, and room for two tables for cocktails. Furthermore, a large salon amidships with a U-shaped settee with a large sofa opposite that can easily seat six to eight people. This original, optimized design functions so well because it allows interior volume, space and maximum visibility while still achieving the sleek exterior lines of a modern cruiser. The design philosophy behind the Cantius 60 is to do everything with ease. Rather than pack as many features as possible into this new yacht it has been designed to focus in gracious dimensions. The yacht is laid out and opened up to allow for maximum comfortable living. Boarding by the stern, port and starboard steps lead into the cockpit yet still leave abundant space for the u-shaped seating across the transom. Here is the perfect spot for outdoor dining and entertaining with a high gloss table and electrical sunshade over the area. Expanding on this space, the full glass bulkhead into the salon has a port side partition that lowers electrically to create an island kitchen effect complete with 2 bar stools. Privacy is also an important element. For private outdoor relaxation the Bow Lounge area features a wide forward facing bench seat as well as loungers with reclining back rests and a sunshade that can cover the area to add comfort.
38 Luxe Et Al
Light coloured wood flooring and trim offer easy maintenance but as the same time is warmly welcoming. Daylight simply floods into the boat, due to the design opening up the area ahead of the helm, which allows the lower level to remain bright and open. The helm appears to float within this space. Heading forward is the VIP Cabin which has a nearly full size queen berth, easily accessible from either side, with expansive glazing overhead and I the hull sides, as well a luxurious feature of a walk-in closet. The Master stateroom is full beam with a king sized bed and the cabin functions more like a private living area with mirrored bulkhead, very large windows with opening ports, generously sized ensuite head with private shower stall and the additional feature of translucent door and wall panels which allow the light to flood in. The cabin also benefits from the addition of a built-in coffee machine, refrigerator ad café style seating on the starboard side. Fabrics for the interior were supplied by Ultrafabrics. Luiz De Basto of Basto Design commented “The Cantius 60’ interior was designed with the comfort of the owners and their families and friends in mind. First, we made sure the ergonomics are generous and the overall layout was well resolved and appropriated for active cruising and living on board. There are two options, for 2 or 3 cabins, both with a full beam owner’s cabin amidships. Then we went on to design an interior with a clean and geometric tendency, contrasted colours and rich textures in the woods and fabrics. Finally the accessories such as light fixtures and door knobs were selected to match and enhance the geometric feeling. The result is an exquisite living space, feeling surprisingly larger than other 60 footers. Colours are used to define the interior spaces through monolithic volumes and shapes which are enhanced by a light and dark palette using natural wood and fabrics. Not many colours or prints, just an accent colour. Details like the stairway and bathrooms give us the opportunity to fashion them as design statements. We are pleased with the dedication and respect of the yard to the project and the Cantius 60’ great interior is the evidence of the effort of the experienced professional team involved.” Matt VanGrunsven, Director of Marketing for Cruiser Yachts International said “The yacht’s design features sophisticated and luxurious appointments through the collaboration of our engineering staff along with Facheris Design on the exterior and De Basto Design on the interior. The result surpasses a sporty, affluent yacht.” Facheris Design, having achieved shortlist success in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016, is led by President Patrizio Facheris, he said proudly of the project “ A production yacht that succeeds in creating a seamless fusion of comfort and style that appeals to a large market”.

“ The result is a sculptural floating home with elegant and dynamic areas, where style meets function, aerodynamics, on board comfort, ergonomics. Every detail is designed to harmonize with the aesthetic theme of the yacht ”
Fincantieri, leading western shipbuilding group, and Pininfarina, standard-bearer of the Italian design for 85 years, introduced the “Ottantacinque” concept of a latestgeneration luxury mega yacht. “Ottantacinque” will be a cutting-edge mega yacht, 85 meters long, 2,460 gross tons, with 5 decks, each of which featuring technological solutions and exclusive interior fittings. A key feature of this outdoor space are the twin pools located on the main deck raised almost flush with the side bulwark. These are complete with an elevated sun bed offering uninterrupted views of the sea. Boasting adjustable bottoms, the depth of the water can be altered or raised entirely to provide an open platform of 160 square metres for parties and entertaining. An infinity Jacuzzi is located on the owner’s deck aft, along with another Jacuzzi on the owner’s deck forward, while the bridge deck accommodates a helipad. Fincantieri has also shared renderings of the yacht’s interior showing open plan living spaces with a bar, dining and living area all located in the main saloon. Large ceiling and side windows also offer panoramic views from all key living spaces. One of the stand-out areas of the yacht is the beach club, much larger than the average at more than 170 square metres. The transom and various side doors open outwards, creating platforms out over the sea and bringing natural light into the space. The pool above allows natural light to fall over the bar, albeit with a constantly rippling turquoise tinge. The area leads into a large spa and even a dedicated diving station. Two tender garages offering space for a limo tender, chase boat and two jet skis are located on the lower deck. Accommodation is for 14 guests across six double cabins and an owner’s suite with further cabins for 19 crew and staff. The entire project is a merge of simplicity and functionality, innovation and style, elements which mark the assets of both companies and which are the pillars of the idea of Technology of Beauty.

“Ottantacinque” is the ambition of creating an Italian mega yacht, technologically advanced, with essential lines, comfortable and of absolute beauty: a meeting of excellences, able expressing creativity, luxury and Italian manufacture to the utmost. After Destriero, “Ottantacinque” is the new result of the partnership between the two groups, both acknowledged world-wide as champions of the Italian industry and culture. It aims to be a strategic added value for both companies in the mega yacht segment, requiring extremely high quality and productive capacity levels. Fincantieri has channelled significant resources in this market niche, gaining important results starting from the creation of Fincantieri Yachts, the Group’s dedicated business unit. Counting on Fincantieri’s 230-years’ experience in shipbuilding, the company’s yacht unit offers unparalleled levels of design, style, reliability and quality in building vessels over 70 meters. The Pininfarina Group has been operating in the marine sector since the Sixties, leaving a lasting mark of its style on countless projects, from “one off” models made for special customers, to design activities of topsides and interiors for limited or wider series, both sail 2 and motor boats, offering technical and aesthetic solutions inspired by the automotive world, which represented something original in the marine sector. Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, stated: “We already are among one of the few mega-yacht builders managing all the business activities, from sales to the product life cycle. Now, thanks to this stunning project, resulting from the partnership with Pininfarina, not only we enhance our position in the sector with the highest industrial level collaboration, but also we are an Italian real point of reference in a market that, as all luxury niches, highly demands the capacities and taste of our country”. Giovanni Romano, Head of Fincantieri Yachts, stated: “We worked hard to establish ourselves on the market, thanks to the quality of the yachts we built to date,
acknowledged unanimously as top-of-therange and to the development of new high quality products which meet the needs of owners who demand boats below 100 meters. To this end we worked together with the best designers to create unique products in terms of technology, aesthetic taste and potential lifestyle on board, flexible enough to be shaped according to the clients’ requests. “Ottantacinque” is the result of an excellent teamwork, in which both our company and Pininfarina have demonstrated to be perfectly in tune while developing the concept”. “A custom-built model of the sea, in line with Pininfarina’s natural vocation in creating exclusive projects, combining tradition with innovative solutions. This is how our design team conceived the collaboration with Fincantieri Yachts” Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman of the Group, commented. “The result is a sculptural floating home with elegant and dynamic areas, where style meets function, aerodynamics, on board comfort, ergonomics. Every detail is designed to harmonize with the aesthetic theme of the yacht”. The ambition behind this new concept is to mix cutting-edge technology with style and creativity. “We had the idea of creating something special and unique from Italian creativity on one side and with technological capability on the other side,” explained Marco Mazzu of Fincantieri. “The technology allows the designers to create the shapes they want while still offering the level of luxury owners expect on board.” “We’ve been asked by a number of owners about creating yachts of the highest quality below 100 metres, so we think there is definite potential in the 80 to 90 metre market,” said Marco Mazzu of the concept. “This is a yacht for people who want the best in terms of quality and lifestyle. We need to re-focus the industry on products that reflect dreams, but in a way that those dreams can be realised. That is what we aim to do with this concept.”

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? Technology has profoundly altered the way people live, becoming an integral part of Design and Architecture. We are using the achievements in technology to realize the dream of humanity and are overlapping virtual and real worlds. The ground-breaking generation that reflects the pulse of our time today are the Millennials. Their impact in every sector of our society has been monumental and will continue to change the way we live, create, entertain and work. Millennials’ quest for instant gratification and amplified experiences has had designers revamping aesthetic codes and breaking the rules. Developing new visions for the way we live, imagining lives liberated from convention and trying to strike the right balance between timeless and need for continuous change, has become the norm. We live in a wonderful Global World. However, there is a reaction to globalization and loss of regional identity today, manifested by a need for individuality. Elegant purism is infused with unique ethnic archetypes from different cultures that epitomize personal style and reveal wonderful values. Dark tones, cosiness and comfort are the order of the day putting former rigor and austerity aside. Moody mysterious ambiances offer security and refuge from global uncertainty. Bold textures and materials derived from nature connect with human spirit, stimulate the senses and add softness to the experience. As a result reclaimed materials are creeping into luxury projects striking a tension between raw and refined. Design of objects and spaces is becoming more emotional and sensual. Designers are creating soothing spaces that allow for reflection, visual delight and ability to restore the sense of wellbeing. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design.

• • •
Personalization; creating fascinating blends that give living spaces unique character Seamless world; merging sleeping, bathing and living spaces into one another; blurring the line between interior and exterior spaces Work environments that speak to Millennials : more flexible, shared and adaptable spaces that generate innovation.
And key trends that we should be aware of?
• • • • • • • •
Future of light: Statement light fixture; often they look like sculpture, or they cast lovely light and shadow patterns; Incorporating art into urban reality and everyday life Stunning prints that appear on furniture, photo wallpaper, tableware and everyday objects Painterly rugs: whether it looks like Motherwell or Monet Mixing warm metals; rose gold, copper, black Creating unexpected riskier combinations: pairing contemporary with rustic, pure classic and chic, slick and vintage Retreat to something vintage or nostalgic in contrast to digital world Defining what is essential and having less “stuff”; Clutter free spaces.
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Make purchases that have longevity and quality, that can endure design and are sufficiently well made to last forever, rather than following passing trends. Make sure you fall in love with your design and furniture before proceeding. Life is more beautiful when you wake up to something you love. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Design, Architecture and Art are my greatest
passions; family and special people in my life are my greatest love; nature, music and sport my greatest inspiration. It is a perpetual struggle to keep the balance between the three; however, they are inexhaustible source of my happiness How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? They are incredibly important as they help elevate the design and raise the bar in these industries. The recognition of talent and achievement is a wonderful reward for years of designers’ hard and dedicated work What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? Yacht design has always been a dream due to my passion for the sea. I will definitely focus more on Yacht Design in the next several years, without abandoning my relentless fight for elevating design and architecture in Toronto. My ambition is to keep pushing the boundaries, inspire and challenge people around me to create ground breaking architectural and design statements that will transform our city. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself The car you drive? Audi S4 Midnight Black Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Northern coast of Brazil. Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? Exedra Hotel Nice, France; Milos Restaurant Miami Beach. The place that gives you the most energy? The sea. I am an avid kitesurfer; long sandy beaches along the sea are my absolute heaven. And the place that enables you to totally relax? Remote Islands of Aegean and Adriatic Sea. Your favourite food and drink? Fresh seafood and freshly squeezed veggie and fruit drinks.

Etihad Airways has stated its ambition to be the best airline in the world and outlined a vision for a First Class product to build on its success and to continue to redefine and reimagine airline travel. The airline wanted to continue the innovation of its new cabin interiors with the creation of a brand new First Class product for its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet and to deliver a guest experience that would reflect the airline’s now well established reputation for innovation and excellence in intelligent cabin design. Etihad Airways formed the Etihad Design Consortium (EDC) to deliver this challenging ambition. The EDC incorporates four companies: Acumen Design Associates, Factory Design, Honour Branding and Promise Communispace (now C-Space); with Acumen responsible for the design of all seating products. Etihad Airways’ B787 interior is equally as ambitious as its highly acclaimed A380, with the same ground-breaking innovation evident in all elements of the cabin interior, from unique configurations to revolutionary seat designs.
“ A luxurious and highly innovative First Class product, achieved through a revolutionary patent-pending, curved-aisle cabin layout. ”
The B787 First Class product was a completely bespoke design for Etihad Airways, and the challenge for Acumen was to create a product that could match the unrivalled levels of space, features and luxury afforded to the First Apartments on the A380, but uniquely packaged into a product that could be integrated into the smaller, more ‘catalogue’ B787 aircraft.
The seat structure is positioned as far back into the suite as possible to enhance the comfort and give the guest the maximum amount of useable and perceived visual space. The décor and lighting on board Etihad Airways B787-9 Dreamliner is inspired by contemporary modern Arabian design, complementing the airline’s ‘Facets of Abu Dhabi’ design identity introduced in late 2014. First Class guests experience luxurious private suites with a large, Poltrona Frau leather-upholstered seat and ottoman, a personal wardrobe, chilled mini-bar, a 24inch TV monitor and centre seats which can be joined to create a double bed. A professional on-board Chef offers First Class guests a bespoke dining experience, preparing fine cuisine inflight from a pantry of fresh produce. The First Suite is an exclusive and private space, where timeless luxury has been reimagined. Close the sliding doors and enjoy the most personal of spaces. Every element of the journey has been designed to reflect a discerning lifestyle. The Etihad Airways B787 First Class offering serves the growing market need for premium and VIP travel, delivering the relative levels of space, innovative features and luxury provided in the larger First Apartments on the A380. The Etihad Airways B787 First Class is the most highly customised Dreamliner interior in the industry.
Etihad Airways wanted to challenge the catalogue approach by designing a ‘blue sky’ product for First Class with Boeing. This sets the project apart as it is the first time a First Class private suite has been integrated into a B787.
“The ground-breaking, next-generation First Suites, Business Studios and Economy Smart Seats offer a superior level of luxury and comfort and will transform the inflight experience.” Said James Hogan, CEO Etihad Airways.
The ‘standard’ cabin architecture of the B787 is not designed to integrate with a First Class seat layout. The diamond shaped layout of the centreline suites provided the necessary aisle clearances to allow a smooth transition to the galley entrance, maximise the width where it is most important and also give the cabin its patented signature curved-aisle aesthetic - unique in the industry.
Etihad Airways’ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carries 235 guests – eight in First Class, 28 in Business Class and 199 in Economy Class – and offers levels of luxury, comfort, entertainment and inflight connectivity unrivalled in commercial aviation.
The B787 First Suites offer the most luxurious First Class experience in the world. The superior quality materials incorporated throughout, the tapering suites and the forward/aft-facing layout allowed the footprint of the First Suite to be maximised where the guest requires it most: the area around the seated position. Without the tapered profile, the suites would inherently be significantly narrower, with
60 Luxe Et Al
large amounts of space wasted in order to meet the required aisle clearances.
This is the third year Acumen Design Associates have had shortlisted success at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards. When asked how important the awards are within the industry, Ian Dryburgh of Acumen Design Associates said “The awards are a fantastic opportunity to showcase excellent design, grant exposure to the winning designers and offer inspiration to the industry. As voting is open to industry professionals, design readers, clients and customers, the results give rare and accurate insight into the universal perceptions behind iconic designs.”

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? A greater focus on comfort and integrating state-ofthe-art technology with design. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. High-tech, environmentally sensitive products, comfort, digital art, less wires and more speed. And key trends that we should be aware of? Our world is changing rapidly and relying more and more on digital capabilities on every level including the luxury and functionality of interiors. What projects are you currently working on? A Chateau and new Winery Cellars in Provence, Manor Home in Moscow, Penthouse in Singapore, Ranch House in Montecito California, Mansion in Los Angeles, three Apartments in Manhattan, Riad in Morocco, Apartment in Florence, Apartment in Rome, Apartment in Aix-en-Provence, my various product lines. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Always allow the environment and location to determine the design and coloration. A colour or aesthetic that is quintessential New York may not work in Los Angeles at all because of the light exposure and geographical differences. Never follow trend and be original. Always imagine the space twenty years into the future. Will it still be beautiful or passé? Your project will always dictate what it needs so listen well and pay instinctive attention to what it requires. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Balance is very important and variety is key. When one eats just one kind of food you grow bored and even ill. Therefore, the life of the creative person must include equilibrium between work and play. My work and international projects demand much travel from me. Therefore I always combine play with work. I design each day as though it is a room; utilizing balance, playfulness, creativity and focus. How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? While there is ample international talent, an award such as the IYAA provides a springboard for greater

public awareness and exposure for the creative professional. An actor cannot act unless he has an audience and likewise, the creative professional relies on an audience to create and go from strength to strength. In the end, it is not just about recognition, but the beauty of sharing and inspiring others with our work that makes an award such as this unique. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? To continue living and working with dedication and passion. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself The car you drive? When in Provence, a 1967 230 SL Mercedes Convertible. When in New York a Range Rover Sport, when in Rome, a 1969 Alpha Romeo Spider Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Florence, Italy Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? La Colombe d’Or Saint Paul de Vence The place that gives you the most energy? My design studios and art studios And the place that enables you to totally relax? My homes and nature Your favourite food and drink? Belgian Chocolates, French Champagne and Truffles Anything else interesting? I like variety and cannot design or create just in one style. Likewise, my homes are vastly different from one another. I can live and dress formally with opulence and refinement, or simple, minimalistic, informal, rustic or eclectic. I believe it is vital to draw from many different realities in order to express yourself freely. The aspect I enjoy most about my work is that each client and project is entirely different. Like an actor, I take on the part and play the role to my very best capabilities. I listen well, observe and execute creatively according to the script. I am flexible and forever changing and I think it is vital to refresh oneself constantly. Never allow yourself to grow stale for there is too much creative potential and beauty in the world to play the same part over and over.

“ The interior design is entirely understated safe in the knowledge that the statuesque nature of the vessel speaks for itself ”
Imagine is already well known to the esteemed hierarchy of the industry. The ground-breaking yacht cuts an imposing figure on the scene thanks to her substantial size of 65M and the design collaborations with two industry heavyweights, Tim Heywood and Andrew Winch who created the exterior and interior aspects respectively. Her generous proportions do not negate her grace upon the water and her contemporary, iconic status does not compromise the traditionally refined brilliance of her craft. Imagine’s status as the ultimate show-piece and entertainment venue was cemented with a luminous debut season spent hosting parties for the elite social set during the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival. This is a yacht with the substance and sensibility of a private, privileged setting. The sleek lines of the exterior design and the palatial volumes of the interior styling make this yacht one of the industry’s most imposing and famous. The crucial aspect of her enviable reputation however is that she delivers on every level; from style to substance, functionality to fun, durability to design; size and significance. It is this depth of character that truly defines the excellence of Imagine, the jewel in the already glittering crown of premier yachting firm Fraser Yachts. Comprising 7 luxury staterooms, an expansive sundeck complete with spainspired facilities and a range of on and off-board entertainment available, Imagine lives up to her name by inspiring all manner of idealised pursuits. Imagine, in essence, encapsulates the most desired elements of luxury yacht ownership. Imagine quite literally pushed the limits of imagination within the industry. Furthermore Amels are worthy of extended praise at having articulated such aspirant architectural ambitions into a remarkable reality. This mega motor yacht is built from highresistance steel for the hull and light

aluminium alloy for the superstructure. Equipped with the finest and most substantial of the industry’s machinery and instruments, Imagine is as impressive in the engine room as she is on-board. With such significant mechanical prowess it is incredible to consider that the aesthetic aspects of Imagine are as imposing. The ultra-modern and sleek exterior design draws the eye on account of the muted monotone motif of the grey hull and high-gloss white of the superstructure. This colour-scheme expertly marries contemporary chic and timeless elegance. It is clear the informed intelligence of the Tim Heywood design team has been executed with excellence across Imagine’s superior exterior. In keeping with Heywood’s trademark artisan approach to architecture, Imagine is gifted grand, swathing lines, a sculpted shape and graceful curves befitting of her feminine epithet. The external design is determinedly athletic but the strong, robust nature of the shape is complimented by the gentle beauty of the design’s overall impression. In contrast, the interior aspect of Imagine utilises a more classic styling than the contemporary nature of the exterior suggests. A stately, noble ambiance informs Imagine’s interior, with fine, traditionalist furnishings maintaining an impressively refined elegance. The overall effect is one of confident calm. The interior design is entirely understated safe in the knowledge that the statuesque nature of the vessel speaks for itself. Renowned designer Andrew Winch was commissioned with overseeing the internal aspect of the Imagine project. Winch is admired across the yacht design business for his creativity and keen understanding of the demands of the design brief. In this instance, his association with Imagine has produced a truly striking style story.
Muted matte bronze tones, soft, honeyed marble and gentle wood grains combine to create an atmosphere of authority without aggression. The inclusion of bespoke materials and refined, worthy textures such as refined granite and rare stones ensure the design is suitable for the yacht’s robust size but warm enough to make a welcoming impression. The overall ambience is one of astute abundance and sophisticated indulgence, without ever being impractical, over styled or unauthentic. Aside from the large and spacious saloons and hotel-suite sized VIP staterooms complete with balcony, Imagine also features a deeply unique beach-club style sundeck. The generous bathing platform enjoys maximum sun exposure whilst the considered layout of the loungers and cushions is influenced by the style of a luxurious private beach with a wide variety of beach set up equipment and water toys, and the benefit of the use of the two tenders, 8.50mt tender Yachtwerft Meyer custom made (in fiberglass), and 8.50mt Limousine tender Yachtwerft Meyer custom made (closed and air conditioned) (in fiberglass). Additionally, Imagine features several key details which further set her apart from any yacht which came before. A stunning and futuristic glass-walled lift enjoys a central location at the heart of the yacht, connecting all four decks as a fun but functional show-piece. The aforementioned sun-deck comprises an entire entertainment and leisure complex including a spa pool, separate pool with swim-up bar, sauna and gym. Imagine is a world apart from her rivals and continues to excel and impress without challenge. To have achieved such an imposing yet understated design across the exterior and internal aspects is testament to the skill and synergy between the collaborating design teams and this yacht is definitely one of Fraser Yachts’ finest listings. Imagine is a truly exceptional creation in both concept and reality; a future legend enjoying her time in the spotlight.

Monte Cassino is a Broward motor yacht being refitted at Rolly Marine in Fort Lauderdale. The owner is European and has international business interests and loves the minimal modern French style. The development of this project, due to reach completion in 2016, revolved around an interior refit for a 106ft/ 32.31M Broward, originally delivered in 1990. The previous layout on board the yacht integrated 4 cabins, which poses the first major structural change, as plans for the refit involve transforming two guest cabins into a large Master SR and his and hers Master Head.
“ Clean, functional and minimal design ”
In this major overhaul, all component design schemes are being changed, including; lighting, electrical, appliances, plumbing, flooring, all finishes, woodwork, cabinetry, overheads, loose and fixed furniture, window treatments, stone and marble, glass and mirrors. Also being redesigned are the galley and crew areas, the sundeck and the exterior profile of the yacht. The overall aesthetic of the project is a response to the client’s love of clean, functional and minimal design. This is reflected in the effective layout plan of the main living spaces, and by maintaining a clean colour palette throughout. In working closely with the client and reacting to their needs, the resulting impression is clean and minimal, with a practical use of space. This design is all about the gorgeous wood veneers with minimum colour and functional space. The veneers range from cherry, zebrano, acacia wood flooring and Macassar ebony to name a few. The carpet is white silk and the boat is adorned in white leather panels and furnishings throughout. The bedding is from Pratesi in the white hotel style bedding look. The plumbing and door

hardware is a combination of brushed nickel and polished chrome which is the “jewellery” of the design. The lines of the furniture are geometric and clean. The yacht is being transformed with the most innovative LED lighting and sound system operated on a Luetron control. The appliances are Miele marine with black glass and stainless fronts. The yachts final destination is Africa where is will reside for the owners private use. Karen Lynn Interior Designs was contracted to design and project manage the interior design refit of the vessel. Karen designed all of the interior millwork and feature walls thought and overheads, lighting design and custom furniture and provided all of new layouts of spaces. Karen Lynn Interior Designs provides design/build or fit out services for the complete project from start to finish. She has provided a complete construction drawing package, 3d renderings of five areas, and will coordinate all trades and vendors to turnkey the project from concept to completion. The project is expected to take 8-10 months and will deliver late 2016. The owner is looking for a third yacht at the moment and Karen Lynn Designs hope to work with him on that too. Karen Lynn Interior Designs was established in 2001.They have worked on over 80 Yachts to date ranging in 50-200 feet. They are experienced in all phases of yacht interior design, construction and fit out and have worked in several shipyards in Europe as well as the U.S. They provide project management on all interior refits and new construction as well as full service design packages. When an avid car collector from South America asked for a 36m superyacht concept that reflected his passion and lifestyle, Argentina based Corgo Yacht Design knew it would have to create something different. Corgo Yacht Design received a call from a former client asking for an “out of the market” concept; something new. The remit was that the design should be elegant but sleek, with a mix of classic and modern elements. The challenge for the team was to start to think how a yacht could represent the client and his lifestyle. Several ideas surfaced, however it was the client’s passion for cars, and his large private car collection, that became the focus for the inspiration. The basis for the final design would reflect six criteria - Sophistication, elegance, sleek, modern, clean lines and simplicity. This combination would push the limits of design and imagination, whilst being achievable in real terms.
“ Conceived not as just as a concept but to be a viable yacht, a perfect blend of design and technology. ”
On the exterior design the dynamic visual message begins emphasizing the topsides in order to embody the feeling of a classic sport car. The challenge was to mix those classic models with a modern style, adding accent lines along the surfaces. The hull lines were developed to make Inara’s appearance different from every angle, combining convex and concave surfaces that will finally blend into each other to form an impressive profile. The superstructure was placed far aft and special attention was given to the shape of the large glass surfaces, to achieve the desired Coupé look. Indeed, and by following a main request from the client, the superstructure may look enclosed. In fact Corgo managed to add large glass surfaces and pivoting balconies that allow light to penetrate the main salon and especially the owner’s suite. The windows design provides the interiors with the luxury of abundant natural light creating a relaxed and warm feeling. The deck is divided to accommodate the client’s family’s specific needs; each area reflects a different purpose, and luxury and sophistication are achieved by using neutral colours, fresh fabrics and textures of the highest quality. Forward on the main deck, a wide-beam lounge was designed to allow family
90 Luxe Et Al
and friends to entertain, and easily accommodates ten guests very comfortably. It was also possible to integrate a jacuzzi surrounded by a large solarium. The topsides glass feature enables those seated to feel at one with the beauty of their surroundings. A unique feature of Inara is a glass-covered stern that opens up into a beach club, a private area that includes a wet bar, sauna, day head and large seating areas especially when the platform is deployed. Special attention was given to the lighting design; this would allow the beach club to be a main entertaining area for the family and their guests by night as well as day. The cockpit area is magnificent in its grandeur and provides enough space to accommodate a party of as many as 30 guests without compromising comfort in any way. It contains a large exterior table for all guests for al fresco dining with a wet bar and an inviting solarium to the stern. This superyacht boasts well-balanced large interiors with plenty of natural light. The lower deck was designed to generously accommodate eight guests in four en-suite cabins. The full beam master suite is situated amidships with balconies either side that can be easily extended to open up to the exterior. There is also a full-beam VIP cabin, two guest suites and a space for a spa/gym. The crew quarters will accommodate six across three cabins. Corgo Yacht Design in-house naval architecture designed this 36m yacht to deliver a top speed of 38 knots, achievable thanks to its hull and lightweight construction. In spite of this, special care has been taken to keep the carbon footprint low by using a hybrid propulsion system. As Inara was conceived not as just as a concept but to be a viable yacht, the team had to re-design and re-calculate many times to adjust and to adapt accordingly to the naval architectural requirements and specifications, the desired product would be a perfect blend of design and technology. Inara’s design represents Corgo Yacht Design’s ability to create and develop a design concept that fulfils all requirements and desires hoped by client without compromise.
