Cygal Art Deco – Handcrafted Timeless Classic Furniture Yachts offer an exciting and always welcome challenge for Cygal Art Deco. Matching the technological advances in this visionary industry, with its ever pushing limits, is their goal on every project. Staying true to the finest traditional techniques proves helpful when even the modern technologies fail to achieve a desired design proposal. Many of their products still rely on organically figuring out new ways to manipulate material manually rather than the use of machines. Craftsmanship, attention to detail and unparalleled service are at the heart of their business ethics. This has enabled and encouraged their successful collaborations with leading yacht design firms worldwide. Cygal Art Deco make it their mission to provide customers with the best service. This is only possible through their collective enthusiasm; pride and attention to detail that are implemented by the team. Marcus inherited the passion for Art Deco from his father, Peter Cygal. Building on a great foundation, he now carries on in the second generation, remaining true to the company philosophy of passion and perfectionism. “Sometimes we will spend days on finding just the right tone in the wood to match the interiors. That means hundreds of samples, changing colours until we have a perfect fit. We start from the inside out - always in close relationship with the client.” - Marcus Glomb www.cygal.com
Grafton Furniture Grafton Furniture is a custom upholstery and cabinetry design lab and production facility located in Miami, Florida since 1964. They work with interior designers and trade professionals on residential, commercial and marine spaces. Being near one of the marine capitals of the world, it is only natural that interior designers who specialize in yacht decor utilize their furniture tailoring capabilities for luxury motor crafts. As yacht interior design now sets standards that match its residential equivalent, the need for those custom styled interiors to remain marine unique does not alter. Elegant choices of wear-resistant fabrics and precision cutting of cabinetry is required more than ever to achieve the desired look. With marine interiors the size and scale of each piece is critical for maximum use of the space, so incorporating hidden storage compartments into the main salon furniture is a very efficient design solution. One such example is the incorporation of Grafton Furniture into an interior scheme by Ari Loar Interiors. Ari uses neutral fabrics with contrasting wood that is aesthetically soft and soothing. If the incredible views from the port and starboard windows to the open seas were removed, the interior could be that of a residential client. In Grafton’s newly renovated design lab, they are able to cater to the designers by providing a place to discuss dimensions, choose elegant and functional textiles, wood species, finishes, and even the customized feel of cushions that provides the perfect, unique interior cruising experience. www.graftonfurniture.com

MSB Design MSB Design, a Sogeclair Aerospace company, uses precision engineering expertise to create hi-lo tables, crystal, china and flatware inserts, and increasingly tailored stowage items for personal devices. The robust and functional tables incorporate slim pedestals, a carpet pinch beauty ring ensuring the table fits stylishly to the cabin floor and optional shrouds converting existing shapes to an elegant oval finish. In addition to the manual models, electric pedestal versions can be operated by Bluetooth to change the table’s height from anywhere in the cabin. MSB also offers electric tables with up to four synchronized pedestals for larger dining spaces. “We’ve designed our tables to be incredibly reliable. They are extremely solid with an intelligent infinite locking feature. This removes concerns about the product breaking if someone is leaning, sitting or sleeping, no matter which height it is set at,” says Shannon Gill, Business Development Director MSB Design. MSB also produces bespoke sets of foam inserts in which to store fragile valuables. Each insert is made of lightweight but strong, high-density foam which is perfectly cut to match the contours, surface and shape of the dishes, glasses, and cutlery, in addition to the dimensions of the cabinets and drawers where the dining ware is stowed. A variety of finishes are available to reflect corporate colours, logos, interior styling or branding. www.msbexpertise.com
J. Robert Scott – The Ribbon Coffee Table J. Robert Scott, Inc. the luxury home furnishings manufacturer was founded in 1972 in Los Angeles by Hall of Fame designer Sally Sirkin Lewis, Founder and President. The company was born out of Ms. Lewis’ desire to provide her clients with contemporary, well made furnishings that met her uncompromising standards of quality and beauty. Her understated, signature style has become known as ’California Design’. J. Robert Scott can modify any of their existing items or create an entirely new piece, tailored to the specific needs of their clientele: ”If it can be drawn, it can be made.” It is not unusual to see skilled craftsmen, many of whom have been with Ms. Lewis for more than 20 years, hand sewing the edges of a sofa or patiently applying gold leafing to a console with a squirrel hair brush. The techniques used are the traditional construction methods that date back to the Renaissance, these talented craftsmen are truly modern day artisans. The Ribbon Coffee Table is a sculptural stainless steel and glass design by Sally Sirkin Lewis. Originally the base was drawn in an “M” orientation, however once the prototype was completed, they realized that the fluid curves of the shape would be much better reversed in the “W” position. The mirror-like high polished stainless steel creates reflections of random areas in the room, and due to the openness of the base, it does not impose on the space. It is a true example of the J. Robert Scott design philosophy of “furniture as an art form”. The Ribbon Coffee Table is 60” (153cm) wide by 20” (51cm) deep. www.jrobertscott.com

Which sector do you specialise in? Corporate, General and VIP aviation markets Is the aviation and/or yacht market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, the aviation market has been an integral part of Garrett Leather’s success. Garrett Leather works hand-in-hand with aviation designers throughout the world to develop new colors and products that meet exacting aviation industry requirements. We offer several products that have been developed specifically for the aviation market. The most widely specified products are treated during tanning to meet FAR requirements, so the leather may ship immediately to our customers. How long have you worked in this sector? I have been working in the Aviation sector at Garrett Leather for the past 20 years. Which other sectors do you work in? In addition to the aviation and yachting industries, Garrett Leather also works in residential, corporate and hospitality design, automotive restoration, furniture manufacturing, and motor coach interiors. Can you please give details of recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/ participation in these projects? Garrett Leather received numerous requests for a product that would
work well in contemporary designs. We began with a pallet of soft gray and taupe in a matte finish and used this as the basis for developing our Flight collection. Working closely with our tannery, we added the benefit of passing the 60 sec vertical burn to give customers peace of mind when specifying Flight for part 135 aircraft. Trends/design directions moving forward... Customers appear to be moving toward the use of more texture. Colour choices may still be traditional and more subtle, but adding a bit of texture offers a nice transition on the lower sidewall. Rik O’Hanlon-Smith,
Managing Director, Passmore of Colchester Ltd
Which sector do you specialise in? Yacht Upholstery. Is the Superyacht market an integral part of your business/ large percentage of your market? Yes, very much. We opened our Southampton workshop to be perfectly situated to work closely with a major customer’s yard on the south coast. We provide upholstery for their 80 to 120ft superyachts, which has become a large part of our business. How long have you worked in this sector? The family run business was founded in 1960 by my grandmother, whose maiden name the company still uses today. Starting out with domestic retail stores in Colchester and Ipswich, we entered into the marine market in 1978. Following significant success in the yachting sector Passmore left the domestic market in 1988. I joined the company during my father’s time at the helm in 2001 What interesting projects have you worked on recently? We have recently introduced an exclusive new mattress for the yacht market in conjunction with Vispring, the luxury bed and mattress manufacturer. This has been very popular, we have just fitted out five superyachts with them, for which we have had extremely positive feedback. In terms of products on the bench at the moment, we have been working closely with Hardy Marine on their new 62’ motor
yacht. This upholstery project has been a collaboration between us, Chris Lock at yacht design agency Synolo Design, and an owner just as passionate as us. It has been great fun and we look forward to its launch next year. We have also just started working on upholstery ideas and samples for Oyster’s new 118ft sailing yacht in build at the moment. We hope perhaps another interior award will be awarded to Oyster Yachts for this stunning new build in a year or so. Watch this space… How is working in the Superyacht sector different than the domestic and commercial markets? One major difference is working to the various industry codings on the yachts. This can be challenging dealing with the various different regulatory bodies and their individual specifications, especially when using domestic upholstering fabrics. How have technological advancements influenced your work in recent years? We always look to advancements in the materials we purchase and ensure we are consistently up to date with the latest innovations in fabrics. Any trends/design directions moving forward... Trends come and go, for example leather, which can be ‘in’ one year and ‘out’ another. We certainly are coming out of a decline in leather use at the moment, with Garrett’s ‘Distressed’ range, currently one of my favourites and popular with clients.

Vice President Aircraft Interiors, F. LIST GMBH Which sector do you specialise in? I am responsible for the aircraft interior branch of F/LIST’s operations as well as Business development and sales for Yachts and Luxury Residences. Are the Superyacht and Aviation markets an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? At the moment, these are our primary markets. How long have you worked in this sector? I have worked at F/LIST for almost 16 years now. Before that, I ran my own company in the business of individual home furniture. F/LIST itself has been in the yachting business since 1997 and in aviation since 2004. Which other sectors do you work in? Another segment apart from Yachting and Aviation is the furnishing of Luxury Residences.
F/List - Beyond the Surface F. LIST GMBH, from Thomasberg, Lower Austria, is a global manufacturer of high-class interior for business and private jets, mega yachts and luxury residences with more than 690 employees. Passion, reliability and visionary spirit determine every step of this Austrian family business. The services range from planning and development to engineering and manufacturing of the exclusive interiors. Galleys, cabinets and linings finely crafted by F/LIST adorn more than 1000 jets worldwide. Among other innovative products, F/LIST has gained worldwide recognition for their exceptional real stone and real wood floorings. Finest natural materials are processed to create exquisite floors which add a sophisticated and luxurious touch to business and private aircraft cabins. But F/LIST products are not merely objects of beauty: they are expertly engineered to surpass the strict requirements of the aircraft industry that demand extreme resilience, durability, nonflammability, soundproofing and, above all, weight reduction.
What interesting projects have you worked on recently? One of our latest, very exciting projects was the outfitting of the first Boeing BBJ 787 Dreamliner in cooperation with Kestrel Aviation Management, for which we supplied the floorings, stone veneers and stone furniture. Working within the Superyacht and Aviation sector must be different than the domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? This is indeed true because in our sector, every single project is unique, even in the near-series production. In the commercial sector, the main goal is to
create an environment which is appealing to most people – in private aviation and yachting you cater to the exclusive demands of a single or a handful of individuals. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced your work in recent years. The internet of things, mobile entertainment and thus new standards in terms of in-flight entertainment have been a major driver in the establishment of our joint venture INAIRVATION with Lufthansa Technik, which produces state-of-the-art inflight entertainment systems which blend seamlessly into the furniture provided by F/LIST. Rich Ruggeri,
Co-Owner Scott Group Studio Which sector do you specialise in? Aviation and Superyacht Are the Superyacht and Aviation markets an integral part of your business / large percentage of your market? Absolutely. Our business has grown exponentially by building relationships and working with the aircraft OEM and completion centres and marine designers worldwide. These valued, global partnerships have provided us with invaluable knowledge and understanding as to how to meet the demands of aviation and yacht clientele. How long have you worked in this sector? 25 Years What projects have you worked on recently? Although not in the aviation market, we were tapped once again to do the current administration’s Oval Office and state dining room rugs for the White House. It’s an honour, really. Not only were we humbled to take on such an important project but it’s one that everyone at Scott Group Studio took pride in. Other favourite projects include our ongoing work with designers who are responsible for some of the worlds most elite, couture retail brands and designer’s homes. We know our rugs enhance and complement the high-end experience demanded from the clientele who encounter these environments. How is working within the Superyacht and Aviation sector different than the domestic and commercial market? It’s different, yet the same. Although the aviation and super yacht sector works at a different pace than the residential and commercial sector, the

expectations remain the same. The challenge is to deliver the same fine quality in a shorter amount of time. What technological advancements do you feel have added specific value to your work? Our team at Scott Group Studio is always in a mode of constant improvement. We know how important immediacy and visually articulating our design is to our end user. To that end, we provide high end renderings for all our projects as well as quick turnaround samples. Any trends/design directions moving forward… Textural patterns have been very popular in both the aviation market as well as the work we do in residential design. Often at times designers would like to use a pattern in a way that doesn’t feel too overwhelming in an interior but still adds some interest. We have been developing new designs that have a softer and more subdued look, mixing patterns with multiple textures, creating layered and nuanced designs. We have also seen some very unique and personalized interiors. The ability to customize and personalize luxury items has been a huge trend in design, from fashion to interiors. Final thoughts I’m always intrigued and energized about “what’s next” in design and materiality - staying forward focused. It’s so important in our line of work to know what resonates with our designers and what’s buzzing right now in the industry. Demonstrating how we can incorporate the most luxurious fibres like silk, cashmere, and merino wool in our designs while also delivering a one of a kind piece is extremely fulfilling.
Scott Group Studio At Scott Group Studio, it starts with an idea, a vision. With head-up display and enhanced vision capability, the Longitude facilitates eyes-up flying. The spacious cockpit incorporates easier access and an ergonomic design that fully focuses on crew comfort and efficiency.
“ The spacious cabin of the Citation Longitude, with its double-club configuration, allows for the most legroom in the super-midsize class. ”
In October 2016 Cessna Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., announced that its Citation Longitude will exceed initial performance targets with improved range and payload for this revolutionary super-midsize business jet. Further establishing the aircraft’s anticipated leadership in its segment, the Longitude has achieved an improved range of 3,500 nautical miles, an increase of 100 nautical miles, and full fuel payload of 1,600 pounds, an increase of 100 pounds. “These performance enhancements for the Citation Longitude are a direct result of our industry-leading engineering processes that allow us to meet our program milestones and exceed our customers’ expectations,” said Michael Thacker, Senior Vice President of Engineering. He added “Increases for both range and payload on the Longitude will bring even more value to our customers, particularly for popular non-stop routes, including New York to Paris, London to Dubai and Singapore to Sydney.” The spacious cabin of the Citation Longitude, with its double-club configuration, allows for the most legroom in the super-midsize class. The fully berthable seating, designed specifically for this new larger-cabin line, has levelling and panning ability, giving passengers maximum comfort. Natural light is in plentiful supply, with 15 large windows positioned for optimal viewing. The forward wet galley, finished in fine hardwoods, has plenty of room for food preparation. Cabin service is enhanced by hot and cold water, generous cold storage, and large supply cabinets and can accommodate an espresso maker and a microwave oven.

Inflight accessible baggage compartment allows for easy access to belongings. There are six bespoke interior finishes available to customise the cabin further. The Black Edition Interior commands attention with a strong confident flow, espresso toned veneers, luxurious satin black leather and mesh textured embossing. The Carnegie Interior Collection is inspired by the storied history of the legendary theatre; this interior marries rich chenilles, finely woven piques and a trio of smooth leathers. Hyde Park Interior is comprised of sleek sophisticated lines that are inspired by deep blue silhouettes emerging from nature’s spectrum of silver mist. Silver Frost is a neutral palette of platinum blonde silks, luxury leather, and plush textures, which naturally marry with silver abstract patterns in a distinct, bold scale for a modern re-invention of nature. The Bisque Interior Collection mirrors craftsmanship from worlds past, subtle fabric textures and classic neutrals replicate the details in the hand thrown pottery. And finally, The French Roast Collection is an effortless take on a contemporary colour scheme; this collection bestows warmth and high style. From Oyster Yachts - the UK’s most successful builder of large series produced cruising yachts - comes the Oyster 825, providing a “superyacht experience” in levels of style and comfort for the owner, who still enjoys sailing the yacht himself with family and friends yet wants the balance of supporting his sailing with a professional crew. Available in both Deck Saloon and Raised Saloon versions through Oysters Custom and Refit in Southampton, the 825 features Oyster’s latest striking and contemporary styling, first seen with the highly successful Oyster 625. Clear deck lounging areas and larger hullports with ‘Seascape’ windows are among the features of this innovative new breed of Oyster yacht. With clean and easily driven hull lines drawn by Humphreys Yacht Design and detailed styling and engineering developed by the Oyster Design Team.
“ a global cruising yacht with unrivalled race performance and a highly specified interior befitting a true superyacht... ”
The Oyster 825 is a powerful yacht that covers up to 250 miles per day on long passages without drawing breath. From every angle she is refined and elegant. Just as at home safely exploring the world’s oceans as cruising the Costa Smeralda, the Oyster 825 is designed for the owner who seeks adventure and performance but with the peace of mind of safety and every comfort to hand. The spacious, ergonomically planned cockpit comfortably and safely separates guests from sail handling, whilst the huge areas of flush deck, both forward and aft, provide the perfect spot for sunbathing and entertaining. The design process began as Oyster’s 825 brief was to create a worthy successor to the highly successful 82, providing elegant superyacht luxury for six guests, with suitably appointed galley and crew areas enabling a full ‘six star’ service without compromise to her performance, whether global cruising or racing, always strictly adhering to Oyster’s world renowned reputation for strength and seaworthiness whatever the conditions. Oyster Design would employ the latest 3D technologies to optimise available space within the sleek, easily driven hull, maximising the standard layout of en-suite owner and guest accommodation in three double cabins aft, whilst providing independent quarters for four professional crew to run the yacht discreetly. Abreast of the trend towards lifestyle orientated yachts she would feature a large, full width saloon, with the feeling of light and space further enhanced by a state-of-the-art sidesliding glass companionway and Oyster’s trademark triple Seascape windows giving unique views to the horizon when seated. Seamlessly integrating the intricate systems of a high quality modern vessel, with painstaking attention to sound mitigation and unobtrusive service access, would ensure the owners’ enjoyment of the yacht. The owners’ brief for Maegan built upon Oyster’s standard 825 design, generating a global cruising yacht with unrivalled race performance and a highly specified interior

befitting a true superyacht, within a highly contemporary minimalist theme. However, minimalist was not to imply any form of discomfort, so careful use of colour and fabrics would enhance the interior ambience, along with touch screen controlled lighting and air conditioning systems. For more than 35 years marine upholstery specialists Passmore of Colchester have furnished the full collection of yachts built by Oyster Yachts. Hill House International Interior Designers, headed by co-founders Helen Bygraves and Jenny Weiss worked alongside Passmore and Oyster to collectively deliver ultimate luxury and comfort fit for a superyacht. The brief was to create a workof-art not only beneath deck but to extend the glamour to the open deck areas and huge ergonomically designed split cockpit. A long standing Hill House Interiors client and avid sailor, the owner of the superyacht, wanted the epitome of the perfect sailing yacht and from the outset involved the designers who consulted on furnishings, finishes and even the final layout. Once the Surrey based award-winning designers had created their interior vision and carefully selected materials, Passmore’s challenge was to bring the nautical extravagance alive with the bespoke furnishings using their expertise and meticulous attention to detail to create aesthetic success. On the large upper deck, the soft furnishings in fabrics by Dedar, seamlessly handcrafted by Passmore adds to the lavish entertaining area. Down below, the complementary colour palette flows in to soft taupes and teals in a collective arena of seating, cushions and window dressings in exquisite fabrics by Kravet and Armani – all handmade in Passmore’s facilities. The master cabin is furnished with a superior carpet in Royal Dove by Sylka and chosen purposely to suit a yacht environment adding a touch of softness to the timber. The strikingly captivating headboard is upholstered in an iridescent anthracite fabric by Zimmer and Rhode. Other fabrics by Sacho and Hermes have been carefully stitched and sewn to complete the dressing, not to mention the leather-clad cabinetry with signature nailing detailing. The designers involved in the project fully believe that the design works well due to how it demonstrates Oyster’s ability to build a lifestyle type of vessel without turning their backs on their core values and reputation of high performance seaworthy blue water sailing yachts. It shows that the company is eager to tailor the boats to the specific requirements of individuals. Oyster Marine was founded in 1973 and has established itself as an international market leader of world-class cruising yachts. With their distinctive Deck Saloon design, Oyster Yachts are recognised throughout the sailing world for quality, comfort and performance.

Unique among the aircraft in the Static Display at EBACE 2016 was the first VVIP outfitted BBJ 787-8, Dreamliner, the pride and joy of project manager Kestrel Aviation Management, completions specialist Greenpoint Technologies, and Pierrejean Design Studio of Paris. The 787 is a carbon-fibre, all-electrical aircraft. Given that Kestrel Aviation were the first to manage the installation of a high-end bespoke cabin in such an aircraft, Kestrel had to become innovative disruptors on this project. The challenge was not only getting the cabin concept right but also ensuring that these concepts were compatible with the unique structural characteristics of the carbon-fibre 787. Much of their experience with installing VVIP cabins on legacy, metal aircraft was of limited relevance to the BBJ 787. An entire new data set would need to be sourced from Boeing to facilitate the design and installation of a high-end cabin on the BBJ 787.
“ Although deceptively simple at first sight, the design gradually stimulates the observer with subtle detail and textures that are well integrated with adjacent pieces to offer an appealing continuum. ”
Some designers offered cabin concepts for the BBJ 787 but many of these were out of touch with the technical realities of this aircraft type. Kestrel Aviation are the first to convert a luxury BBJ 787 cabin concept to an actual luxury aircraft, certificated and ready for service. The BBJ can fly non-stop for 18 hours so passenger comfort was a high priority. The design concept needed to convey a feeling of zen, an oasis of peace, soft earth tones, uncluttered flowing lines with the absence of sharp edges, good control of natural and artificial mood lighting. To the touch, Kestrel and Pierrejean Design Studios wanted a design that felt organic with surfaces that invited emotional as well as physical connection. Noise and vibration were addressed with extensive soundproofing. The design started with their perception of multi-cultural customer expectations; challenging as the end user was not defined! Then they had to reconcile this perspective with the constraints presented by the carbon-composite structure. The aircraft’s complex electrical design and unique software architecture also presented a steep learning curve in the integration of the cabin design and associated systems onto the basic 787 BBJ. Kestrel had total turnkey responsibility for this first true BBJ 787 from original aircraft purchase through cabin design concept and cabin modification to delivery to the end user. This was essential for managing this very complex project which was way more challenging than other wide bodies like the BBJ 747-8. The design concept flows cohesively throughout the cabin with no discontinuity. Although deceptively simple at first sight, the design gradually stimulates the observer with subtle detail and textures that are well integrated with adjacent pieces to offer an appealing continuum. The passenger is carried effortlessly through the cabin without visual or physical obstruction.

This project proves that a cabin can be designed to appeal to Western, Asian and Middle Eastern customers alike. It has subtle cues from each culture that transcend regional stereotypes. The eye of the beholder can interpret those design cues from his individual cultural perspective. This is the unique nature of this design. F/LIST from Austria were asked to supply its wood and stone flooring and stone monument products on the Dreamliner with a custom VIP interior. F/LIST products feature in the entrance and hallway, master bathroom, dressing room and guest lavatory. Kestrel Aviation Management defined the aircraft specification, oversaw the design, engineering, fabrication and installation of the cabin, and encouraged the completion centre, Greenpoint Technologies, to provide F/LIST with the opportunity to supply its bespoke products for the 787 cabin. F/List worked with Greenpoint to develop the ideal flooring and lightweight stone vanity solutions for the aircraft and the results are extremely impressive. F/LIST built the components in its Austrian facility after first templating the flooring at the Moses Lake, Washington completion centre and then later overseeing the final installation of the monuments and flooring at the centre. The impressive 40-passenger interior was designed by Pierrejean Design Studio Paris and includes a forward master suite with bedroom, an expansive lounge area and a guest cabin with first-class passenger seating. All areas feature a palette of neutral brown and grey tones just as the 216 square foot fumed oak F/LIST wood flooring in the guest lavatory, entrance and hallway leading to an open rotunda with dome ceiling. Also featured are F/LIST’s lightweight stone products. F/LIST stone flooring underlines the interior in the master lavatory highlighted by a large dual-sink vanity with real Crema Marfil marble stone veneer. F/ LIST furthermore manufactured the stone cabinets in the dressing room and guest lavatory. Despite the complexity and challenges of the 787, the result represents an outstanding technical achievement for Greenpoint Completion Centre. The 787 is an all-electric aircraft. Its complex electrical design and unique software architecture presented the project with “a steep learning curve.” The aircraft’s cabin alone contains some 26 miles of new wiring, with more than 17,000 terminals which require connection to the electrical architecture without causing power overloads or interference. This Kestrel curated BBJ 787 has set the bar for all future VVIP widebody cabin modifications.

Liz Dalton Founder, Dalton Designs
What projects are you currently working on? Several Residential new construction builds in the Palm Beach area. Plans are also in the works for a new 90’ sportfish we have been contacted about, which I won’t name at this time. What projects have you recently completed? The new 87’ Michael Rybovich Sportfish Persistence, 2 , 130’ refits of Westports, Sarah Beth and Milk Money, 2 custom home residences in a private ocean side country club area in N Palm Beach. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? The shipyard at Michael Rybovich provided all the woodwork on the 87’, we then bring in our own subcontractors to do softgoods, carpet installation, wallcovering, and installation, these companies vary from Yacht to residential. We get most of our referrals from yacht builders and on land from architects and builders and past clients. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? There still seems to be an opening up of spaces or in some cases spaces that can be managed by opening or closing off spaces, be that through clear windows or solid sliding panels. For instance, having a bar, seating area open just aft of the wheelhouse to allow guest to see and enjoy the view while underway, and if the captain or crew desire privacy or quiet it can be closed. The Exterior spaces keep growing to accommodate sports, toys, and dining alfresco. Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? I feel the ultramodern look in yacht design will continue, but feel that there will be a
swing back to more luxury and comfort in furnishings, so they are not so sterile and hotel like. Trends going forward? Still see that there will be clean lines, but perhaps more detail in finishes and mouldings. What products/services could you not live without when designing? Wonderful materials like Perennials on the exterior for seating and upholstery, beautiful textiles from a myriad of suppliers like Cowton and Tout, Brunschwig and Fils, Osborne and Little, leathers from Edelman, Spinneybeck…custom Carpets from Scott for aircraft. And now a little about you: The car you drive? Porche Panamera for fun, Mercedes GLE 350 for work Your favourite restaurant? Echo, an Asian restaurant in Palm Beach for their Palm Beach Roll and Great Ginger Martini Best way to relax? Reading, swimming and walking The place that gives you inspiration? My dreams Ideal holiday destination? Any sunny warm location The perfect drink Good rum on the rocks Final thoughts or words of wisdom You need to stay inspired, be it through design projects, people that move you, places you travel to and go to, but above all look forward and to the heavens, don’t get stuck.

Elisabeth Harvey Design Director Jet Aviation Design Studio What projects have you recently completed? We have just completed an amazing promotional design launched at the European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition in Geneva. The Jet Aviation Base Design Studio was responsible for bringing to life two diverse, yet complementary design schemes, one for a B787-9 and one for an A350-900 aircraft, against the backdrop of showcasing our design process. The highlight of this was a film, created in co-operation with ACA Advanced Computer Art, which shows how we as a Design Studio reach a highly bespoke and custom designed interior, from the very first sketch to final delivery of the aircraft to our customer – every element considered and designed with our client in mind. Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? In the specialized field of private aviation interior design, I see our clientele taking more advantage of the luxury of speed and space in creating the most sophisticated and tailor-made interiors for our clients. It’s a move towards what I call “ultra-aircraft” design: the ultimate interiors for our clients in terms of comfort, functionality and luxury. The future is about consolidating aviation design with lifestyle – a discipline which stands proud alongside high-end residential and super-yacht design, able to meet the needs of the most demanding clients with sophisticated design and creative technical solutions, with the highest attention paid to every detail. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond: 1. More refined use of interior space and proportion. Bedrooms and bathrooms are extended to be much more than functional spaces, but areas in which to fully relax. Dining and living spaces merge and cooking preparation moves away from commercial aviation, becoming more elegant and multifunctional. 2. The search for ultimate comfort in the air. As flying times increase, so do the requirements for enhanced sleeping, relaxing dining and entertainment possibilities in the interior. 3. Technology and innovation will be enhanced. No longer an add-on to the design at some secondary stage, technology will
be integrally designed within the backbone of the interior, and remain predominantly hidden from view. 4. Designing fully with the aircraft in mind. Unlike home and yacht design, exterior parameters are set in aviation. We’re challenged to work with the existing space and create something surprising and unusual with the layout to enhance the experience one has in the interior. This lends scope for optical illusions to come into play. 5. Sustainability takes on a new focus. Whilst our interiors are entirely bespoke and necessarily luxurious, using only the finest materials, all components are respectfully integrated into the interior, with the quality of build and finish giving each aircraft a true longevity that can be appreciated for years into the future. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. I find any design which challenges traditional thinking particularly inspiring. Perhaps a good example would be Abu Dhabi’s new Louvre museum designed by Jean Nouvel. For me it is about quality in its highest form, with function and aesthetics achieving a standard beyond the ordinary. With regards to aviation interior design, it is much more than making the space look stylish and attractive; it is about understanding and working with the full potential of the space and enhancing our client’s living experience in flight.
What products/services could you not live without when designing? For me, a soft lead pencil, a graphics tablet, a passion for design and an enquiring and detailed mind are essential to create industry-leading private aircraft cabins.
As a designer, what is the place that gives you most inspiration? I find that anywhere where I can appreciate both the wonder and force of nature particularly inspiring. That may be sitting with a cool glass of wine watching the sun set over the Mediterranean sea in the south of France, appreciating a fierce thunderstorm at the end of a hot summer’s day in my hometown of Basel or watching as the wide open expanse of the Russian Steppe unfolds beneath me as I fly, for example, from Beijing back to Switzerland.

The yacht is carrying a small tender that, despite the pocket dimension, is giving us a hard time. Beside Horizon 70 that is well under production we are developing two new models that should complete HORIZON line. The entry model will be a 50 footer, based on a concept of a daily cruiser. The successor of HORIZON 70 will be a 100 footer based on semi-displacement hull with a goal to offer long range voyage at a reasonable speed and with highest efficiency.
What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Artofkinetik: Luxury powerboats Cosmo Explorer: Explorer superyachts Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? It is quite difficult to advise on specific direction because in many cases it is the Owners who have a huge influence on the design itself. I wouldn’t say that specific direction can be defined but what I definitely believe is that presence of windows, skylights, and any sources of natural light will be pushed to the limits in terms of size.
What projects have you recently completed? Not so recently but worth every mention is an iconic Hedonist 63ft yacht. On that specific project I was chief naval architect taking care of each detail at the highest end. Although the launch was back in 2010, where we stole the show in Cannes, I am still taking inspiration from that remarkable yacht. Other than that, my very favourite completed project is I Nova, a 153ft Explorer Yacht. There, I was owner adviser, production manager and quality control supervisor for two years. It was such a demanding project where the yacht was loaded with so many features, toys and options. Our running project Horizon 70 is actually a big reason for highlighting those two projects. It’s a 70 foot boat with many superyacht features and is inspired by the two aforementioned projects. Apart from those we have developed a line of sport fishing boats for Sapphire Marine starting at 32ft and going up to 45ft. Sea trials are scheduled for Q3 2016.
Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? Naval architects and engineers are pushing the boundaries of hull efficiency. Therefore, implementing twin or multihull forms, as well as some other unconventional shapes. It will be a difficult task to merge eye catching design and unconventional hull shapes in a single whole. No doubt it will be a challenge.
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. One of the great yachts engraved in my memory is Feadship Musashi. Taking a closer look at the interior, at first sight you will notice a ship structure exposed. Of course the frames are coated at the highest spec but there are absolutely no decorative coverings. With this smart trick a designer can gain an unobstructed clear window area and a greater interior detail such as a ship frame. Amazing. What products and services you could not live without when designing? I would say the associates: having a great team next to you, giving you a real joy and inspiration. On the other side, I would really find difficult doing so many design iterations and tests without having great software at our disposal.
Trends going forward? ECO friendly arrangements are a huge trend, mostly in terms of ship propulsion systems. Therefore, the presence of enormous glass surfaces hiding solar panels underneath is inevitable. The marine sector will definitely follow the car industry in terms of alternative sources of energy. Electric propulsion is fantastic in all aspects; the system is very quiet, there is no pollution, the speed regulation and manoeuvrability are excellent and finally you are able to cancel the engine room completely as such. As it sounds too good to be true, the problem of energy storage still remains.
Any final thoughts? It is interesting that the size of the yacht does not play such an important role these days, contrary to the past. Not so long ago there was an unofficial competition all about the size and who will order and deliver the biggest yacht, but these days, it’s more about who will deliver the “smarter” yacht. Having said that I am mostly pointing to efficiency, ecology and space utilisation. Don’t you believe that Steve Jobs could not afford more than an 80 meter yacht? But just look at that masterpiece loaded with so many features… Feadship Venus is perfection indeed.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? In general terms I feel design is increasing exponentially in its value to customers and manufacturers. More and more OEM’s equal each other out in technical and manufacturing capabilities and therefore find the primary differentiator is design which enables the character and personality of their brands to stand out. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. 1) Hide technology components that clutter the environment.
trimmed surfaces in areas like bulkhead covers. This provides a more home-like environment. Then make sure they feel they have designed the interior instead of you. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? The field of design allows most designers to live personal and professional lives that blend. It is very important to shut off the work side of your mind but often the fun at home and with family involves sharing the ideas in both directions. However, empowering employees to help manage projects enables for work life balance.
2) Recyclable or sustainable materials. Still relevant. 3) Bio mimicry 4) Discrete personalization sandbox zones that “Wow” the customer when used. 5) Exoskeleton design. And key trends that we should be aware of? There are exciting developments in window systems and how we consider the external environment inside the aircraft. What projects are you currently working on? We have found much success in our Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 interior designs and due to this we are pushing this DNA into all of our products. Though I can’t specifically state which projects I have running I can say they are exciting and will break through what we consider aircraft interiors to be today. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? Very important due to the deliberate focus on design and its influence on contemporary trends. This organization pushes the status quo and allows the design community access to many new ideas which become tomorrow’s normal. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? To continue to learn from my customers and develop further skills in relevant design trends and technical tools. The focus on nonaerospace applications and their potential use in aircraft interiors. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself: The car you drive? BMW 328 Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Sardinia, Italy
From an industrial design standpoint create canvases that allow the customer maximum material application diversity.
Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? Hotel Pitrizza, Costa Smeralda Sardinia, Italy
From an interior design point of view I would present the customer with multiple design trends so as to gauge interest in novel vs. traditional schemes. Less veneer and more

What projects are you currently working on? At the moment we are lucky to be working for a private client on a 30M carbon fiber monohull with a modern and masculine look. A 55M concept is almost done to be presented in the boat show season as the opening of our European base studio. And finally the Argentinean Studio continue to work in the design of production of motor yachts up to 24M, that’s remains one of the strongest points of the team. What projects have you recently completed? The second unit of the Segue 26M was recently finished and the third unit will be delivered late this year. Of course, the INARA concept was presented at the IY&A awards in May. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? We worked mostly with private shipyards and their contractors. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Interior design in superyachts is following an evolution in terms of luxury experience for the owner, which can be seen in the integration of new technologies, lighting and materials. Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? I just find it interesting to see how the luxury car design is increasingly affecting the design, style and colors in the superyacht industry. Trends going forward? I think of myself as someone trying to ignore the trends to find new ideas and ways to develop them. However, sustainability is certainly a trend that affects us everyday and we have to follow it. What products/services could you not live without when designing? I could not survive in design without paper and a bic, but technology is something that gives you the power to see and create all the ideas inside of your mind, so you can show and present them without compromise. Any final thoughts? I think that in Yacht Design, as in every design field, the aim is to listen to the clients with a clear mind, just to be able to create something that reflects their emotions.

What projects are you currently working on? Many, but sadly all confidential, as is the way with aviation What projects have you recently completed? Etihad A380 and B787 cabin design, Four Seasons B757 interior What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Etihad, TAG Aviation, Four Seasons and many talented suppliers Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? To infinity, and beyond... Well, not quite, but I think I can confidently say that the days of customising a seat and doing a trim and finish overhaul being satisfactory are over. That having been said, it takes deep pockets to change an entire cabin interior, but as airlines pressurise aircraft and equipment makers to be ever more innovative, they have to respond with being ever more flexible; the customer is always right, and as such you cannot differentiate brand with a simple makeover, and an extra inch or two on pitch. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond: • - The clarity of your vision: who exactly are you designing for? What defines them? - What might be available tomorrow that is
just a dream today. - What will have changed for the passengers in 4 years time at launch. - Consider solutions that have wit as well as technical excellence. - Innovation: now is the time…
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. Etihad A380. At launch, this was and remains the most highly customised cabin interior flying in commercial aviation, and everything we introduced has improved in some way the flying experience for Guests. This effort was egalitarian in that our interest in improving the experience across all classes was echoed by a supportive client and we brought innovation into the aircraft at many levels. Whilst we look very hard at improving the flying experience by technical innovations and clever architecture, we like to try and delight people as well. When you walk along the aisle in First Class, the ceiling has lit panels with a pattern designed to suit the modern, Arabic look of the airline. As you walk past, tiny projectors shine the illuminated pattern on you from the ceiling above. The mind is tricked into a sense that the dappled light is from the lit panels, which are an interpretation of the sun flickering through the leaves of a date palm. It really is a delightful moment when you notice it as you walk through.
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Always, always, always try to think of something that hasn’t been done before, and back it up with a way to do it now.
What products and services could you not live without when designing? Obviously my partners and company, peopled by amazing talent and computers I can’t even turn on, let alone operate. But for myself, a little time out to think and a pen to make scribbly sketches with. As a designer please tell us the following: i. The place that gives you most inspiration: When I am not walking around a city like London, it would be the internet where a virtual walk is always on offer, around pretty much most things. ii. The place you can relax most: On a plane. Or riding a motorcycle. Or building an engine. iii. The most inspirational design scheme or project you have seen or visited in recent times: A sculpture by David Cerny in Prague, of Franz Kafka’s head. This might seem abstract but look at it on Youtube and look at the simple narrative. It has enormous clarity in both its concept and in its implementation. All 45 tons of it. Any final thoughts? The world of aircraft cabin interior design has changed significantly in the past decade as a result of commercial pressures and is pretty much the most exciting place to work now. It keeps us busy and happy, a lucky place to be. However we would quite like to do a luxury yacht if there are any takers?

Tray Crow Director of Interior Design, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation
What projects are you currently working on? As the director of interior design for Gulfstream, I am proud to lead a team of talented designers who are up to the challenge of creating and delivering the world’s finest aviation experience. That means we balance a wide range of projects every day. We may meet with a client to work with them on their design scheme or we may do research behind the scenes, developing interiors that incorporate the latest technology and reflect the future of interior design. We have more than 30 degreed interior designers who collaborate closely with engineering, as well as the furniture and upholstery craftsmen and women to experiment with new ideas. Right now, we are developing final interior styling details for our two newest aircraft, the Gulfstream G500 and G600. We announced the aircraft in 2014 and have been working closely with our customers to ensure the interior exceeds their expectations. During the announcement event at our headquarters in Savannah, Georgia, we debuted a cabin showcase, a full-scale cabin mock-up that reflected the initial interior design for the G600. We spent the next year inviting our clients to see the showcase and gathering their feedback on it. With their input, in 2015 we revealed a new interior that incorporated their design decisions. Overall, the new interior reflects 200 design changes they helped us make. And we’re still not finished. Throughout the summer, the showcase has been travelling to business aviation airports around the United States, so we can continue gathering feedback on it. When the first G500 and G600 aircraft are delivered to customers in 2018 and 2019, respectively, they will reflect the work of countless people – clients, designers and engineers alike – who collaborated to create carefully crafted interior that dazzles and delights Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes?
we are seeing a rise in interiors with more opulence. A focus on detailed accents, whether it be a highly detailed stitch on a seat accent or a metal inlay in veneer, is becoming more prevalent. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? In working with clients, I often advise them to select what they love. Many of our clients spend a significant amount of time in their interiors and they should be surrounded by an interior that delivers the ultimate in comfort, adapts to changing needs during the flight and provides convenient control of the cabin. What products/services could you not live without when designing? I could not live without our employees! I work with a talented and experienced team of Gulfstream craftsmen, engineers and designers who deliver high quality solutions to our clients, making complex concepts and designs seem easy. As a designer please tell us the following: The place that gives you most inspiration: We travel the world extensively meeting with our clientele. It is hard not to be inspired by the varied places we visit. The most inspirational design scheme or project you have seen or visited recently: I recently spent a week in Cape Cod in a friend’s restored Walter Gropius home, and the design is as relevant today as it was when it was built in the 1960s. The way Gropius framed the landscape is masterful, capturing the movement of the shoreline and the tension of the changing tides. There are common elements to timeless designs like his that continue to inspire me and carry over into the designs we cultivate at Gulfstream.

Samuel Heath’s Style Moderne Elegance and glamour redefined, Samuel Heath’s iconic Style Moderne is a highly distinctive collection of taps showers and bathroom accessories inspired by the grace and glamour of the Art Deco period. The elegance of this collection is an authentic reflection of the era yet its individual identity is secured with a modern interpretation. The collection is available in 7 stunning finish options including the recently launched non-lacquered brass which will develop its own natural patina over time. Leaving the brass untreated means that through repeated use and exposure the metal will react to moisture and touch to develop a distinctive character. There are also 3 different control options to choose from: classic lever or cross tops as well as the opulent Luxe. Samuel Heath commissioned bespoke designs from an artisanal glass designer and hence Luxe was born, a stunning collection of individually cut controls which are available in two shapes: a faceted barrel lever and a flat roundel. The complementary accessories, many of which are available in freestanding or wall mounted options, can be ordered with either black or white ceramics. With the Style Moderne collection, Samuel Heath has reinterpreted one of the most dynamic and influential design periods in history. A newly built Georgian style mansion overlooking Barnes Common features Samuel Heath bathroom fittings throughout. Black and white marble bathrooms feature pieces from the Art Deco inspired Style Moderne collection in particular the ‘his and hers’ en-suite bathrooms with Swarovski crystal handles, signifying the opulence and individual charm of the property. www.samuel-heath.com

Which sector do you specialise in? Bathing – from the hardware of taps and sinks to grooming products and the fragrances we use.
However we are also able to provide a degree of customisation and alteration of our products to suit the specific requirements of naval architects we work with.
Is the Superyacht market an integral part of your business/ large percentage of your market? It certainly has been in the past, we have been in the superyacht sector since I first worked with Jon Bannenberg many years ago. We have supplied many of the world’s best yacht builders, Pendennis, De Vries, Blohm and Voss and more. We are seeing a lot of growth in the sector and a resurgence of interest in our products – especially so in classically styled re-fits.
Our customers also tend to be similar – very demanding clients who want the very best in bathroom fittings – that remains the same whether it be on water or terra firma. We need to be sure that our products exceed their requirements in either application. One element which does differ in the marine sector is that of service – we need to be able to provide service and parts anywhere in the world within 48 hours, which we are always willing to do.
How long have you worked in this sector? Since the early 1980’s Which other sectors do you work in? Primarily high-end residential, but we have also worked on some great projects recently with boutique hoteliers. Working within the Superyacht sector must be different than the domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? With the size of modern superyachts there are not the challenges there used to be. We used to have to be very careful with the size of fittings – both in brass and ceramic ware as space and weight was always a significant consideration. For the larger projects nowadays that is less of a concern.
Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced your work inrecent years. The sea change is the internet and the amount of information and support we are able to provide our customers and end users by that means. Again, the increasing size of yachts has narrowed the gap between products for a household application or one on the sea. Any trends/design directions moving forward... We are delighted that there seems to be a resurgence in interest for classic yachts and even new yachts in a more classic style. We’ve seen some fantastic re-fits and re-builds lately which would be a perfect fit for some of our products – so we are really excited to be working with some amazing yacht builders on those kind of projects.
Czech & Speake London – the creation of tradition, providing the perfect finishing touches to bathrooms Czech & Speake has been one of the foremost producers of luxury bathroom and kitchen water fittings for over three decades. Globally recognised as representing the pinnacle of quality due to use of the finest materials – the sleek lines and perfect proportions lend themselves to a wide variety of decorative styles. They are especially well suited to high end marine applications due to their deserved reputation for longevity and reliability, as well as fantastic after sales support and ability to provide technical assistance almost anywhere in the world. While the range is not especially broad in terms of number of styles – it is very deep. All fittings fit in to one of three collections, each comes in a wide variety of finishes and fitting options. This makes them particularly suitable for fitting in a marine environment where space is often at a premium. Wall mounting and concealed fittings ensure ease of arrangement within compact surroundings. In addition to brass ware Czech & Speake also produces beautifully crafted and practically sized ceramic ware and a full range of bathroom accessories. A stunning solid mahogany seat sits atop a lavatory with a compact footprint to suit the most sumptuous of on-board bathroom facilities. Which sector do you specialize in? Custom door hardware of all varieties, contemporary, traditional and everything in between.
The NANZ Company We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must learn to sail in high winds.” - Aristotle Onassis NANZ welcomed the challenge when their clients first expressed interest in yacht hardware. Their engineers developed a highly resilient product line that defies challenges posed by ocean air and salt spray. The team created products using non-ferrous brass and stainless steel components that are particularly well-suited for use on the high seas. By combining rare earth magnets and pneumatic springs, NANZ created a patented lock with a latching action and a lever operation that are unimaginably seductive. These exclusive mechanisms are engineered for maintenance-free operation and are appropriate for keeping doors and cabinets secured in the most tenacious of tides. NANZ magnet locks are fully concealed when doors are closed and are conveniently non-handed. With adjustable bevel faceplates and modifiable spring tension, the magnet locks appear modern in design, yet historic in appearance. They are an equally perfect fit for both contemporary and traditional projects. To further bolster durability, NANZ provides yacht trim in the strongest available alloys and finishes. They have developed lostwax foundry methods that allow stainless steel products to be created using the same high-quality tooling that they have refined over decades for their cast brass and bronze components. NANZ also offer a collection of PVD finishes complementing any palette. And of course, all of these products and finishes, which have been so successful for use on superyachts, are equally advantageous for coastal residences. Can you please give details of recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/ participation in these projects? Luckily for me as the production manager I get to have my hands in all of the projects that come through the door. Because most of our projects are custom and involve a lot of development, the majority of them are very interesting. But recently we had the challenge of combining organic materials like mother of pearl into door hardware. We used traditional machining techniques to get a level of accuracy with the organic material that has never been done before. While our communications systems are primarily for business jets, the Superyacht and business jet markets are similar, particularly when it comes to the type of clientele. How long have you worked in this sector? I have worked in the aviation industry for more than 25 years, but TrueNorth celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016. What projects have you recently worked on and how were you directly involved? An important consideration for the TrueNorth team and I is the ability to have personality reflected in the technology. When we developed the Stylus Handset, it came from the need to make an inflight phone that combined ease of use and robust functionality infused with style. People have their own personal style and tastes. In the same way that they have their own personal mobile device, we’ve made it easier for them to have a personalised experience with our inflight handset. The Stylus handset is the only truly personalised cabin handset available in aviation. I
directed the look and feel of the handset’s form factor and the user interface to ensure we delivered on the promise we made to our customers. Do you find working within the Superyacht and Aviation sector different than the domestic and commercial markets? Commercial air transport and business aviation markets each have their own unique challenges, but business aviation and private aviation clients are some of the most demanding and discerning clients. They use their aircraft to build their businesses, maintain work-life balance, and to stay effective. They have high expectations and believe that technology should just work. This is how we at TrueNorth feel too. What technological advancements have influenced your work in recent years? Wi-Fi connectivity and all that it enables continues to be a constant inspiration for me. In the age of “the internet of things,” with people always wanting to stay connected, I believe that connectivity is what will power the next big advancements in aviation. Any trends/design directions moving forward... Innovation does not stand still, and people will continue to find new and exciting ways to communicate, be informed, and be entertained. This is the challenge of the future; to continue to grow to keep pace with this technological change.
TrueNorth Stylus Wi-Fi Handset The TrueNorth Stylus Wi-Fi phone—aviation’s most customizable handset—is the latest in airborne telephony. Users benefit from all the advantages of a cordless phone, without any of the headaches. Following in the footsteps of its corded cousin, the TrueNorth Stylus Wi-Fi handset is the ultimate in customizable and features industry leading high fidelity voice with an easy to use interface. The Stylus Wi-Fi phone is sleek, stylish and speaks every language so your clients can configure the phone to suit their needs. By adding texture, a logo, or changing the bezel colour the client’s requirements can be met, and the customer’s cabin design can sing. TrueNorth Stylus phones are designed for performance and style, with the user and the installer in mind. Stylus offers an abundance of smart technology features, which is why more owners and operators of VVIP aircraft choose it over any other handset. Users need never miss a call as a result of a dead battery because Stylus’ smart power management technology automatically powers the phone down when not in use for an extended period of time—improving battery performance while conserving power. Additional smart self-configuration technology means handsets retain passenger preferences, regardless of the handset’s location in the cabin. It charges in the cradle via Power over Ethernet (PoE) or 28V power, and is powered by Nickel-metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries, simplifying certification. Installed with Simphonē Pro and Optelity cabin communications systems, Stylus handsets make inflight calls akin to talking face-to-face, through analog and digital noise cancellation. Its sleek design and myriad of customization options make it ideal for discerning aircraft owners. And the phone’s cradle fits into both TrueNorth’s Simphonē legacy and Stylus corded handset cut-outs offering a simplified upgrade path. Plus TrueNorth’s MyStylus App lets the client make calls directly from their own iPhone for additional convenience. The TrueNorth Stylus handset wins for looks and performance giving users more flexibility in the cabin. www.truenorthavionics.com

Taylor Prosba,
Director, Business Jet Cabin Solutions, Rockwell Collins Which sector do you specialise in? For business jets, Rockwell Collins specializes in cabin management and entertainment systems, wireless content distribution and high-speed Internet connectivity. In more simple terms, I try to make your aircraft experience extraordinary. A seamless blend between your home on the ground or in the sky. Is the Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Rockwell Collins serves many markets in aviation and defence, but I am entirely focused on the business aviation market. This spans everything from smaller corporate aircraft to large commercial aircraft with living space similar in size, look, and feel of a home. How long have you worked in this sector? Ten plus years in Aerospace. I started with Rockwell Collins after spending time in the Marines as an Infantry Officer. I have worked in different sectors during my time with the company, but I find the business I run now the most interesting in terms of new, relatable technologies. What projects have you worked on recently? My role is to identify and structure business opportunities, put the right team in place, and help clear the way for them to execute. Right now I’m looking at executing a strategy to expand into an adjacent market. It’s not a market my business is familiar with, so being able to interact with customers and identify gaps in their current aircraft experiences is exciting. Working within the Superyacht/ Aviation sector must be different than the domestic and
commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? Yes, but every market has shared and unique characteristics with others. The key is to think about how people want to interact with our systems on these aircraft as part of their daily lives. We know they want it to be intuitive, fully integrated with their personal devices, and deliver the services they have in their home. Breaking the problem down with this type of thinking is exactly the mindset that allows us to identify key design characteristics that correlate directly to the user experience and expectation. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced your work in recent years. Not one specifically, but the overall speed of technological advancement of personal devices and how people interact with the world through them is a big driver. Anticipation of this speed of change drove us to develop a system design with the flexibility to accommodate this rapid turnover and advancement of devices and technologies. Any trends/design directions moving forward... The trends in the business jet cabin market mirror the trends being seen on the ground and in your home. Increased proliferation of connectivity systems, at higher speeds and lower costs, are opening up opportunities to increase the entertainment and productivity capabilities on the aircraft. Standard communication protocols are allowing for more integration between personal devices and our systems. We’re consistently evaluating the latest consumer technologies; to anticipate what we think will mature and be applicable in our market space.
Rockwell Collins - Venue™ cabin management system Many business-jet owners are choosing to retain their aircraft longer and are considering updating elements such as the cabin interior. This can highlight obsolescence issues with their cabin management system. Technology continues to evolve, and older cabin management systems cannot keep up. Business aircraft owners need a cabin management system that can meet today’s requirements but also advance at the speed of technology. The Venue™ cabin management system can do this and more, with no compromises. That’s because Rockwell Collins is not only investing in the hardware, but also in the future of in-flight capability and connectivity. With superb design, Venue and their Stage™ content service deliver an exceptional experience to the aircraft cabin with rich content options for entertainment, news, moving maps, games, magazines and more, to make every flight more enjoyable; complete wireless and wired control of the cabin environment; and connectivity capabilities that bring a seamless, swift and reliable flow of data to and from the aircraft Rockwell Collins’ phased approach for upgrading from older content management systems to Venue streamlines the transition. All while minimizing the impact to the aircraft’s structure and interior. When it comes to the design, installation and support of a cabin management system, experience matters. Rockwell Collins has maintained a steadfast focus on the aircraft cabin for more than 40 of their 80+ years in aviation. Rockwell Collins know business aircraft – from flight deck to cabin to flight services and support. This experience combines with their drive to continually advance cabin and connectivity technologies, taking the cabin experience to new levels of capability for customers. www.rockwellcollins.com

Simon Orrell - Bespoke Creations Exquisite custom-made accessories including tissue boxes and trays, wastepaper baskets and pen holders are the finishing touches that will give all cabins a personal touch. Using unique and rare surfaces such as shell, shagreen, parchment, Simon Orrell Designs has a reputation for creating beautiful contemporary pieces from materials that other craftsmen find challenging. ‘Our clients are very excited by our new collections of shell accessories – kabebe, black lip, mother of pearl, hammershell, tiger brown lip and cowrie to name just a few. Shell offers an iridescence that makes it very attractive and opulent, but also offers variety since different shells lend themselves to different treatments,’ explains Simon. ‘Cowrie, for example, can look spotted like a leopard – which is one effect – but sand it flat and the surface metamorphoses into a veiny pink marble. Hammershell can be tinted and we do a lot of accessories in various bespoke hues. Black lip shell is very exotic and sophisticated; we recently provided half a dozen tissue boxes for a superyacht in this rich, masculine finish.’ Another favourite finish with the marine world is shagreen, the skin of a ray, which is elegantly textured in its natural form, but can also be dyed to suit a cabin’s decorative scheme. www.simonorrelldesigns.com

The concept of a business jet created through a collaboration of Mercedes-Benz Style and Lufthansa Technik was first presented at the EBACE trade show in Geneva in 2015, where the level of media attention this topic received was astonishing. Numerous customers also expressed considerable interest in this revolutionary design. However, the discussions at this time revealed a fundamental doubt as to feasibility. To answer these doubts Lufthansa exhibited a product in which all elements of the design study have been realised without compromise at Monaco this year. They have created all the necessary prerequisites for building and certifying this aircraft. This means that they can start taking orders effective immediately. The collaboration of Lufthansa Technik and Mercedes-Benz Style was an ideal partnership with the aim to apply the design language of sensual purity and the high standards of modern luxury and aesthetics that characterise Mercedes-Benz with Lufthansa Technik’s expertise in the area of VIP aircraft. The aim of the collaboration was to unite innovate design and technical competence.
“ ...a completely new space concept that goes beyond conventional cabin space design, by radically throwing old-fashioned aircraft cabin design precepts overboard. ”
The resultant product offers exclusive customers around the world an interior design concept that leaves nothing to be desired. That begins with the ultimate in technological sophistication. The very finest of what is currently possible in the areas of technology and digital communication has been integrated. This is complemented by the ultramodern cabin innovations from the product portfolio of Lufthansa Technik, for example Life Cooking. And finally, innovations from the MercedesBenz automotive world have been adapted to the aircraft. This is particularly apparent in the “black panels”, which are formally inspired by the latest Mercedes-Benz dashboard design. They join with the floating lines of the furniture and feature electrically-controlled sun shading as well as a real-time passenger flight information display – tailor-made to the customer’s wishes. However, the unique design of the cabin is the feature that most decisively impresses and resonates with customers. There is an immediate sense that this is more than just a means of transportation. Rather, it conveys the cool, trendy atmosphere of a lounge or loft such as one would expect to find in every global metropolis – be it Shanghai, Dubai or Paris. This reflects the lifestyle of the target group: modern jet-setters and global citizens. The Mercedes-Benz Style Aircraft is designed and built to enable them to forget the rigours of travelling. Lufthansa Technik calls this aircraft revolutionary as they have developed a completely new space concept that goes beyond conventional cabin space design, by radically throwing old-fashioned aircraft cabin design precepts overboard. This enables passengers to experience the Mercedes-typical modern luxury in all its aspects, because the design is both emotional and intelligent – in other words, “hot” and “cool” at the same time.

They have developed an interior design that clads the entire space in a spiral, a DNA helix. The dynamic, spiral spatial allocation creates new, separate zones without the typical aircraft-type arrangement of seat and wall elements. The individual space zones flow into each other, so that the entire interior “feels” like a single organic unit. This novel spatial impression is further enhanced by the strong interplay of contrasts in materials, colours and illumination that is so characteristic of Mercedes. This ultra-modern cabin concept offers numerous possibilities for customisation and differentiation, to fulfil customers’ personal desires. This relates to layout variants, the technologies and systems used as well as diverse colour and material worlds. The Mercedes-Benz Style Aircraft was developed on the basis of the latest generation of narrow-body private jets from Airbus and Boeing (ACJ320neo and BBJ MAX), which can already be ordered. They offer a cabin length of at least 25 meters. In principle, however, the Mercedes-Benz Style Aircraft is available for all Airbus and Boeing models. The VIP aircraft, which could seat 150 passengers in airline configuration, is designed for 16 VIP passengers. The entrance area in the front features a welcoming, open entrée, a kitchen (galley) for live cooking and a séparée as well as a VIP bathroom (lavatory). In the aft part of the cabin a separate entertainment zone has been combined with the en-suite private area. The open design of the bath- and bed room is a distinct feature conceived around a free standing shower with transparent side walls. The luxurious king size bed is highlighted by the concave shaped and upholstered head wall. The Mercedes-Benz Style Aircraft stands out clearly from conventional private-jet designs and architecture in many ways; it will grab the attention of those who have a great affinity to exceptional design. On account of its revolutionary design combined with future-oriented technologies from both the aviation and automotive sectors, this aircraft is nothing less than a “moon shot” in the private jet segment. This aircraft closes the gap from traditional modernity to the air travel of the future. It showswhat is possible when one takes rationality and understanding to the highest flight level of intelligence and emotion. It defines a new era of private air travel. Lufthansa Technik is one of the world’s leading providers of technical services for commercial and corporate aircraft as well as VIP and government aircraft. In addition to maintenance, overhaul and repair, Lufthansa Technik also offers special services such as the completion of customised aircraft cabins. In the area of VIP aircraft, Lufthansa Technik has over 50 years of experience in the development and installation of technically and aesthetically high-end solutions. To date, the VIP & Executive Jet Solutions Division of Lufthansa Technik has modified or completed over 100 short-, medium- and long-haul aircraft.

“ A magnificent top deck sleeping area offers spectacular panoramic views from the forward wraparound windows, while an impressive bathroom and dressing room complete the experience. ”
Coral Ocean, delivered by Lürssen in 1994, is widely acknowledged as one of the defining masterpieces of the late legendary designer Jon Bannenberg. Much admired and often imitated, the 72.5-meter yacht sports exterior lines and an interior styling that are as fresh and contemporary as the day she was launched. She is elegant, luxurious, sleek and understated all at once. Coral Ocean’s main deck salon takes the form of an amazing Polynesian beachhouse style interior. Natural materials such as wood, rough marble and shells set the tone for the interior styling, which is underscored by African and Asian features. Colorful highlights dance across a neutral palette of creams and browns from the main salon to the formal dining room and the informal upper salon. Spectacular ethnic artwork decorates the yacht’s interior while well placed uplighting intensifies the “beachhouse feeling”. The main salon features a comfortable and well-appointed seating area for cosy evenings. In addition to its burr oak furniture, the salon holds handmade fractured and polished glass tables of special Italian design. There is also a video projector and a retractable screen. For an al fresco experience, the side shell can be opened up so as to create a balcony over the sea. The formal dining room lies forward of this salon. The walls of both rooms are made from tree bark, silver leaf and burr birch. The dining room’s two round tables can be connected to form one large table by inserting a piece of the wall paneling between the tables. Direct access makes service easy. In total, twelve guests can be accommodated on Coral Ocean – a VIP suite on the upper deck, four guest suites on the lower deck and the owner’s deck on top. Arranged around a central hallway flooded with natural light from the main deck’s skylight, the lower guest suites offer the ultimate in comfort and tranquility. Each cabin has a different color theme and its own en-suite bathroom. A hand-tufted virgin wool New Zealand carpet depicting breaking waves enhances the “beachhouse feeling”. With direct access from the lower deck guest suites, the gym and spa complex (which
90 Luxe Et Al
includes a steam room) offers the perfect place to unwind. Access to the sea can be made from the adjacent swim platform located farther aft. Coral Ocean was one of the first yachts whose interior featured a dedicated spa area – a sensation at the time but now considered a standard feature on most yachts. The VIP suite on the upper deck has an en-suite bathroom and spacious dressing room. These rooms and the adjacent private study look out over expansive sea views. In addition to its function as a study, this room also serves as a TV lounge. Different types of wood accent its styling. Burr birch wall panels complement an oak parquet floor and the furniture from burr oak and parchment. Graceful mahogany handmade chairs pair with the owner’s glass desk. The AV furniture is custom-made from actual drift wood and designed by an English artisan. Similarly styled, the upper deck salon which is located aft of the main staircase, is supplemented with elephant headgear from India. Two seating areas encircle granite beach style tables custom made from drift wood and concrete. The crown jewel of the yacht, the owner’s suite, is located on the top deck and extends to the upper deck. It is the epitome of private luxury. A magnificent top deck sleeping area offers spectacular panoramic views from the forward wraparound windows, while an impressive bathroom and dressing room complete the experience. The huge skylight above the bed is a design highlight. For full enjoyment of the panoramic views, the bed is electrically adjustable in height. Decorative feathers from the ancient Inca period grace the room and round off its harmonious styling. The top deck lobby has a remarkable item of furniture. An old slot machine with its own special coins decorates this room with wall panels made of eucalyptus. From the top deck to the main deck, a beautiful bronze sculpted waterfall adorns the yacht’s staircase. To access the sundeck, which features a pool with a counter current system, guests cross through a patio, which has a view into the pool.
The distinctive profile and deck plan of Coral Ocean, with her magnificent signature staircase, epitomises outdoor living at its very best. A lavish top aft deck with a barbecue bar and a generous socialising area create a space for enjoying lunch, a casual dinner or a cocktail evening. The sumptuous upper aft deck is designed for a more formal dinner and has three tables, which can be connected to form one large dining table for up to twelve guests. Sliding side windows protect the deck from the wind and allow for extensive use of the external space. Aft on the main deck are two specially built 8.6-meter yacht tenders with Yanmar 315-hp engines – one in a limousine style and the other “open” – along with several Jet Skis. The aft area of the main deck can also be converted to a party space for up to 80 guests. Two more tenders can be found on the upper deck forward of the bridge – a Zodiac Ribo 450 rescue boat and a BSC Open 60 RIB, as well as two personal watercraft, the Sea-Doo GTX Limited iS 260. The wheelhouse mainly uses leather and oak as styling materials. Adjacent to the ample state-of-the-art bridge lies the captain’s accommodation. For crew members, there is a large crew mess next to the galley and pantry on the main deck, as well as accommodations (15 cabins) on both the lower and main decks. In addition, the lower deck offers a vast space dedicated to laundry and storage – with walkin refrigerators and freezers. Powered by 2 CAT engines of 2,864 kW each, she reaches a top speed of 17 knots and has a range of 6,000 nautical miles. During her last refit the AV/IT system was updated to the latest standards. The yacht owners have maintained her in a pristine condition throughout the years and she has been a regular visitor at the Lürssen facilities for maintenances. The final product is an immaculate timeless masterpiece.

SottoStudios/LA, established in 2004, is an experiential design and brand studio that is frequently tapped to invent or revitalize products as multi sensory “experiences”. In ‘placemaking’ too many times it is left in the hands of architects, yet places are more than architecture, they are lifestyles that require a more macro approach. There was a need to form a firm that went beyond one discipline and do it well. Senior Disney “Imagineer” Eddie Sotto, saw the need to break down those formal barriers of architecture, marketing, and design by combining them in a single shared process that delivers the “wow” seamlessly. This deconstructed process of working more holistically, along with using emotion as the core of a sensory driven “system of experience”, led him to form his own studio to accomplish this.
“ SottoStudios introduces SkyRanch concept with the determination to respond to the trend of luxury being more bespoke, relaxed and casual. ”
SottoStudios introduces SkyRanch concept with the determination to respond to the trend of luxury being more bespoke, relaxed and casual. The origins of the concept are based on the convictions that if a yacht could fly, why not think bigger? SottoStudios questioned everything about what luxury was and came back with “complicated simplicity”. Luxury should be frictionless and more casual. Capture the solitude and privacy, the romance of the wide open spaces. And after all, aren’t the skies the last frontier of privacy? They saw an opportunity to really create something elegant, but relaxed. Enter SkyRanch, the ultimate escape in the sky. This concept was designed to respond to clients changing needs with interchangeable elements to the seats allowing for easy customization to suit the requirements of taste and comfort of each client. Sotto Studios were inspired by the layering of European saddles and came back with modular seats, surrounded by hand engraved controls, bleached woods, woven leather, inlaid horn, English wool and other rich materials that soothe to the touch. SkyRanch is a state of mind, so the design can be adapted to a variety of aircraft and is bespoke to each client. Each customer can work with Sotto Studios and the completion centre to deliver the “wow” that is sought after. Sotto Studios are used to it. SottoStudios have entered the SkyRanch design featured in Embraer’s Flagship Lineage 1000e, with the exclusive giant portrait window that fits the concept seamlessly, into the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the Concept category. In this design scheme the beauty is in the simplicity and elegance of bleached woods, inlaid horn, soft wool, light gray leather and open air. The light Aspen colour scheme is just one of the choices available in the SkyRanch collection. Hermes “burlap” inspired wall coverings acoustically respond to keep the peace. Design should not exist

for its own sake, and on SkyRanch One Sotto Studios strive to select finishes and design details that tell a composite story every time they are encountered. With exclusivity assured they promise that “If it’s in a catalogue, it’s not on board”. That seamless continuity is what experiential design is all about. From the Bison horn Beer tap and faucet, or inlaid onyx counter that sets off the galley, to the bleached wood and soft mood lighting throughout, the story is there but never gets in the way. In fact SkyRanch is more than a state of mind, it’s a blank canvas. SottoStudios can adapt the design to any aircraft or refit. The modular seating concept allows infinite combinations. They visualize everything in 3D first to explore every option. The talented team at Lightbox brings the ideas to life in a way that goes beyond renderings, they are so real, they’re slices of life. Eddie Sotto is a Renaissance creative professional and entrepreneur with a proven track record in entertainment design that spans 30 years. Sotto’s strength lies both in ideation and team based execution, skills he honed as Senior Vice President of Concept Design at Disney’s Imagineering division, where he ran his own concept development studio. His portfolio at Disney alone contains $500m in built projects ranging from “E-Ticket” Attractions and retail, restaurants, web and mobile technology, including digital architecture like ABC Times Square Studios. Born in Hollywood, Sotto’s cinematic style is largely self taught by having motion picture Production Designers and Disney’s original artists as his mentors. Theatrical design runs in the family as well, with his grandfather being a scenic and portrait artist at MGM and his Aunt Marilyn Sotto, a Costume Illustrator/ Designer at Paramount and Universal, eventually landing with Eddie at Disney to design costumes there. Sotto’s obsession with experiential design thrives on creative continuity and detail, be it emotional or architectural, to make each project unique. Trained in the Disney process born from film, Sotto treats each client as a “script” to be emotionally mined, distilling that “wow” that engages the consumer and then designing to deliver that deeper connection on every level. The craft of using design to deliver emotion was something he perfected under the direction of many of the original artists and set designers that worked with Walt Disney, the master of “experiential design.”Sotto uses his “design follows desire” process to transform products, places and brands and as you see, we have many examples of solving to browse. SottoStudios is comprised of a winning team of professionals that are “cast” to each unique assignment. They are a high focus, boutique firm that only takes on select assignments that they hope are “hard fun.”
