Last month’s seventh annual International Yacht & Aviation Awards brought about intrigue and excitement in an industry as broadly diverse as it is design-rich. We have therefore dedicated two issues to the 2017 winning projects, this being the first of two issues. This year, more than 10,000 of you cast complete and verified votes over a four week period, creating the most fair, objective and communicative event of its kind. Our aim here is quite clearly to engage an industry and this year’s figures illustrate we are doing
just that. In turn this not only creates objectivity it also offer a unique form of PR unlike any other; a form that is targeted and penetrates the niche sector in which we all work. This month we get a chance to look in detail at those awardwinning projects as voted for by industry professionals such as yourselves. Enjoy Until next month Joanne

It is a rapidly growing segment. How long have you worked in this sector? 20 years What other sectors do you work in? Luxury residential Renowned and prestigious retail International, best-in-class hotels properties (e.g., Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, St. Regis, Waldorf-Astoria) If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects. We did a great deal of work on the $3.5B Wynn Palace Cotai (Macau, China) For this project, we worked with esteemed designer Roger Thomas to create a series of custom designs. This property was truly the crowning achievement in Roger’s career and he couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome. Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. I am so pleased that the next generation of family members collaborate with me here at Maya Romanoff. My son-inlaw, David Berkowitz, is our Executive VP and Head of Creative. He has been at the company for more than 15 years and mentored under Maya. I work with David and his team on all product development. We do most product development work ourselves, 20 Luxe et al
but designers very often approach us with a product idea for a hotel, yacht, home, private jet, or office. Sometimes they have a design that we need to interpret and other times they ask us to interpret a feeling or motif. Regardless of their specific needs, our team works together with the designer in a collaborative manner. The result is an original, handcrafted surfacing material that will transform their client’s space into something truly special. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? I work harder! (Laughs.) Creativity is the backbone of the company, and we need to constantly reinvent ourselves to maintain the promise of our 50 years of design leadership, execution, and artisanship. Even in some really challenging economic conditions, we survived and actually expanded our disciplines. We hand-paint, block print, and silkscreen and utilize outrageous materials like silk, gold leaf, mother of pearl, and canvas. I also work along side of my son Michael, who is the President of the company, and my daughter Jennifer Block, who runs our East Coast operations. We have a level of trust and understanding that just doesn’t exist in many places. Working within the Superyacht/Aviation sector must be different than domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? No, just that the orders are smaller! (Laughs again.) Regardless of the size or type of execution, we create environments for designers who want the best of the best for their clients. This is the same whether we are working on a plane, a powder room or hotel suite.
Maya Romanoff is the largest manufacturer of handcrafted wallcoverings in the United States. For almost 50 years, our Chicago artisans have incorporated materials including glass beads, gold leaf, seashells and wood creating beautiful luxury surfacing materials. Both collections utilize the ancient Japanese tradition of weaving ultra-thin Paulownia wood onto a flexible paper backing. Maya Romanoff modernized the manufacturing to incorporate die-cutting, allowing unlimited design options. Ajiro wood veneer wallcoverings have the ability to turn corners and wrap columns making this product an attractive alternative to costly millwork. The Paulowina wood is a fast-growing and renewable resource that contributes to the important environmentally sound element we always strive for. All our Ajiro designs are beautifully stained in 15 hues and hand-finished in our Chicago studio. Following the contemporary look of the original chevron pattern, Ajiro, Grand Scale Chevron expands the design with 15-inch wide stripes that perfectly transform large spaces into spectacular settings. Ajiro Coffers is hand-inlaid wood veneer set in a parquet frame. Ajiro, Grand Scale Coffers is now more than doubled in size from the original to accentuate bigger landscapes and soaring ceilings. www.mayaromanoff.com

CYBER SECURITY IN THE SKY SATCOM DIRECT
Which sector do you specialise in? Connectivity/Communications Does the Private Aviation market make up an integral part/large percentage of your business? Yes, absolutely. Our core business focuses on private aviation, though we do also provide solutions to other sectors, such as military/ government. How long have you worked in this sector? Satcom Direct is proud to be celebrating its 20th year of business in 2017. Myself personally, I have been in business aviation for 5 years, and prior to that worked at Inmarsat and the Cisco Channel. What other sectors do you work in, if any? As previously mentioned, we do have many military/ defence clients around the world, including Head of State aircraft in over 20 countries. SD also provides land mobile and maritime communications solutions for operations in areas with connectivity limitations such as remote locations, large scale events, and disaster recovery. How do you feel technology being incorporated into design will develop in the coming years? Technologies in the cabin, cockpit and flight operations continue to advance, and are being applied in new ways. Building technology into design creates a seamless experience, and that is becoming the expectation for passengers, flight operations and crew alike. As these technologies develop, so too do our solutions that coincide with them, and 22 Luxe et al
ultimately what we are aiming to do is provide the same experience in the air as you have on the ground with regards to communications technology, with a seamless transition. And in addition, we are using technology to synchronize the flight department with the aircraft. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? Our focus is on the customer. Our customers drive our innovation, and we are able to provide custom solutions for the specific needs of our clients. We are a privately held company, so we are agile, innovative, and we move quickly to keep up with the demands in the industry. We also go beyond just providing the services, we are committed to supporting them and ensuring that we deliver and exceed expectations. We have a 24/7 technical support team that is the best in the industry, and they are monitoring services constantly so we can proactively address any potential issues that may arise. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/ affected your work in recent years. In the satellite area we are seeing enormous innovation. There are more players coming in to both the satellite and the air-to-ground (AtG) communications segment, and more technology is coming along all the time to enable aircraft to receive broader bandwidth from satellites. Greater bandwidth enables us, on the value-added services side, to more with that data pipe as well. Twenty years ago, it was just about getting data to and from the aircraft.
Satcom Direct (SD) is a leader in global communications. For 20 years, SD has driven technology innovations in both the cockpit and cabin. The company specializes in inflight communications, information and entertainment solutions. With one of its latest technology advancements, Satcom Direct is now bringing security to the sky with the first airborne private network. With broad bandwidth connectivity to the aircraft, cyber threats become a very real danger that need to be protected against. With VIP passengers working with commercially sensitive information, passing data between the aircraft and their various office locations, cyber security in the air becomes vital. SD Cyber Security solutions give operators more protection and control of their internet traffic. Utilizing its unique private network capabilities, SD can apply a combination of technologies that encrypts data going to and from the aircraft. The SD Private Network gives operators the ability to apply their corporate IT protocols to make the network onboard the aircraft operate as an extension of their corporate office. With privately owned data centres that are directly connected to their satellite operations, SD is the only company in the industry that can offer a full, endto-end, military grade cyber security network for clients. Today, business aviation is about more than getting passengers from point A to point B; it’s also about making that time as productive as possible, as secure as possible. SD proprietary value-added services also can be applied to improve data speeds, create seamless transitions between ground-based and airborne communications networks and filter unwanted data transmissions to and from the aircraft. www.satcomdirect.com

Which sector do you specialise in: High End (Luxury) Residential and Super Yacht Is the Superyacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, it accounts for about 3040% of our projects How long have you worked in this sector? About 5 years What other sectors do you work in? High End Residential accounts for about 70% of our activity and we sometimes work in the Luxury Hotel sector. If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects. This year we completed a gypse wall panel similar to the photo, 60 square meters of straw marquetry for another project and we also recently delivered 3 very large circular canapes. We are currently working on an art deco project that includes straw marquetry, parchment and horn panels. Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. My company makes furniture and we also make our own finishes. For the yachting sector we can supply freestanding furniture or just the finishes in the form of panels. Normally our client is the designer but sometimes we are contacted by the shipyard, or the fitting company, it depends on how the projects are organized. But normally our finished are specified by an interior designers and in the beginning there is a bit

of collaboration between us and the designers to adjust the technical details so that they are in harmony with the aesthetic. I think there is not one process or one way that we work on the yacht projects and that is very interesting, In any case we adapt to the client’s needs for each project. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? Our wide range of art deco finishes, we developed the use of gypse and horn and we are the only workshop that works with gypse. We also have the largest straw marquetry workshop in the world so we are able to work on very large projects. Our team is capable of responding to more technically complicated projects and we also understand very well the luxury market and the attention to detail required by our clients. Working within the Superyacht/Aviation sector must be different than domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? Yes, I find that the Super Yacht sector required a superior level of quality and attention to detail. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/affected your work in recent years. Computer aided drawings and of course the internet, sometimes the 3-D renders we receive are so good I can’t tell if it is an actual photograph or not. But in the end, our finishes are all still made by hand in our workshop, the techniques and savoir faire having been passed down through generations of French craftsmen.

When Amer Yachts Shipyard decided to create something unique, the collaboration between the parent company Permare, which includes Amer Yachts, and Volvo Penta resulted in the award winning Amer Cento Quad, the largest superyacht to be powered by four Volvo Penta IPS propellers. This project to adopt the IPS engines in a superyacht proves that it is possible to significantly reduce consumptions, air emissions, noise and vibrations whilst guaranteeing maximum interior space and supreme manoeuvrability. Their success at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 follows earlier success at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016 where the Amer Cento Quad was awarded the ‘Most Innovative Yacht’. Innovation in the new engine layout, the first superyacht of its size to be equipped with 4X Volvo Penta IPS 1050 engines, has truly impressed the industry. The yacht has a group 2 of counter-rotating propellers, with a total of 7 blades and a cruising speed of 23.5 knots. Amer Yachts wanted to give the flooring the same high criteria of innovation, high quality, and respect for the environment. Amer Yachts chose cork for the exterior decks and a vintage teak for the interior floors, for two main reasons. Firstly for the beauty of the design and secondly for the high functionality and technicality. The cork was chosen for its lightness and its excellent insulation. It is 100% waterproof and rot proof, it has high mechanical resistance properties, it does not need yearly maintenance, it provides a pleasant tactile sensation when walking barefoot on it and has thermal and acoustic insulation properties. The biggest challenge for Amer Yachts was to bridge the gap between providing the utmost luxury whilst maintaining a low maintenance flooring which is kind to the environment. Stazo Marine BV were used as a key supplier for the cork deck, chosen by Amer Yachts as they are considered to be excellent marine professional artisans. 34 Luxe et al
The naval architecture and external design of Amer Cento Quad was completed by Massimo Verme and compromises of a GRP hull. The innovative interiors were designed by Stefano Tini. The yacht can accommodate 10 guests with its 5 passenger rooms. It has one master room, two double rooms and two twin rooms. On the main deck the saloon has a warm décor with custom designed furniture, all the woods used are smoked oak. The extendable lunch table in polished steel and crystal was made by Riflessi. The chairs for the lunch table were designed by Bonaldo and combine warm leather with modern polished steel. Vintage teak flooring was chosen for the interiors of the yacht for the best functionality and the most luxurious design. The flooring is environmentally friendly and is made out of regenerated, recycled teak from houses built on the island of Java dating back a 100 years. The stairs leading down to the guest cabins are made with a combination of polished steel and vintage teak. An equilibrium between modern and warm classic. The success of this new launch is built on its predecessor Amer 94 Save the Sea, and innovations such as the award winning cork decks for the exterior, reducing the weight of the boat considerably, have been applied to Amer Cento Quad. The exterior space offers several areas for sunbathing and relaxation. Key features include a spa pool on the flybridge and a hardtop bimini, which provides shade for the upper helm station and surrounding seating. The main-deck saloon features two L-shaped sofas and a separate dining area, which provides seating for six around a large dining table. These external spaces can be customised to meet the client’s requests with options for a swimming pool or jacuzzi. The collaboration with Volvo Penta has exceeded expectations. Clients who want comfort, luxury and a smooth performing super yacht, with exquisite manoeuvrability, quietness of propulsion, the possibility to sail at low displacement and a good cruising speed, have it all in Amer Cento Quad. The boat will be delivered next year. The sale confirms the success of the cooperation between the shipyard and Volvo Penta in developing highly innovative products, an added value that combined with Amer’s custom tradition makes these boats really unique. Amer Yachts has great plans for this award winning vessel, from 2018 the

Amer Yachts celebrated a triumphant night as winners at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 held in Venice on the 19th May. Having been shortlisted in three different categories, they were delighted with their win in the category of best Flooring. For Amer Yachts their success represents an appreciation, by their industry peers, of the innovative work that Amer are so proud of, and they are honoured to share their success with the entire team of workers and suppliers that have made such a vital contribution to the success of this project.
ultimate Italian Charter Experience will be available on board Amer Cento Quad, named Seataly on launch. This Italian boat with Italian flag and crew, Italian food and drink, and Italian art and craft onboard to delight, will visit spectacular Italian destinations for sightseeing, shopping, wine and truffle tasting and much more. The shipyard will keep on investing in innovation to reach ever better performances and “green-oriented” products with reduced consumptions and low air emissions. IPS drives, introduced on the market more than a decade ago, mean for yacht owners a reduction by 30% in fuel consumption, compared to traditional drives. They are currently working on a new navigation system, their ethos of respecting the sea will be paramount in this development. Amer Yachts believe the design works so well because the yacht is highly technological and innovative in her engine system (less pollution and small oil consumptions), which inspired innovation throughout her development, whilst combining luxury with respect for the environment. The Amerio family, owner of Permare Shipyard, build yachts under the brand Amer Yachts. The family have a real passion and respect for the sea, that has been handed down from generation to generation. 2017 is a truly exciting year for Amer Yachts with their recent win at the awards, two new vessels almost ready to be launched and their plans to break another record with the largest superyacht to be powered by IPS up to 24m.

This year’s International Yacht & Aviation Awards saw Nordhavn’s Lacey Kay as the worthy winner of the Power Yacht 2540M category.
The fuel capacity remains the same, although slight gains in fuel burn are likely due to the N96’s longer water line. The displacement is also virtually the same.
Lacey Kay is the second hull in the Nordhavn 96 series of explorer yachts. The Nordhavn 96 bridges the gap between the 86 and Nordhavn’s 120foot megayacht. The 96.98ft Nordhavn 96 expedition motor yacht was built by Nordhavn in China at their Xiamen shipyard and she was delivered to her owner in 2016.
This new model was achieved by the relatively easy procedure of extending the mould of the Nordhavn 86, PAE use this method as it is an efficient way to give a customer the additional space they are seeking without the drastic cost of building an entirely new hull. Nordhavn has employed this method of thinking with several of its other models including the N52 (based on the N47 hull), the N60 and 63 (based on the N55 hull), the N68 (based on the N64 hull) and the N76 (based on the N72 hull), and the approach has been a hugely successful one.
A huge selling point for Lacey Kay is the fact it maintains megayacht styling, luxury and the capability to travel the world, all within a manageable 30 metres. Scott Cole, of Ardeo Design, was responsible for the interior design of the project. The owners of the yacht previously had a Nordhavn 76, which had exceptional global-cruising capabilities. The client wanted a boat that could host more friends and family, with added interior and exterior entertaining areas, an additional VIP stateroom for guests and an enhanced Master Suite. Jeff Leishman and his team created a world-class cruising vessel of exceptional quality and capability, with a luxurious interior that mimics those of mega yachts for the highest level of comfort imaginable, no matter how remote their itinerary and a boat that is still able to be managed with minimal to no crew. She is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86 and incorporates a 10-foot cockpit extension that allows for space in several areas of the boat including below decks in the crew area and lazarette; at main deck level in the cockpit and saloon; on the pilothouse deck the upper master stateroom; and an even more capacious flybridge.
42 Luxe et al
The Nordhavn 96 makes it possible to have access to the luxuries of a 100-foot boat for a smaller boat investment. The saloon and galley measures 43 feet in length and the combination of wheelhouse, captain’s cabin and sky lounge measure almost 34 feet in length. She includes a vast, full-width owner’s suite in addition to the captain’s cabin, three guest staterooms with ensuite heads, plus the spacious crew wing which comprises a roomy cabin and head aft with exterior entrance. A laundry and utility room are also provided. The luxurious and functional interior was created by Scott Cole and is finished with fine hardwoods, walnut wood panelling, beautiful mouldings and raised panels combined with stone floors, granite countertops, the finest hardware, lighting and fixtures. The flybridge on Lacey Kay features a superyacht spa pool and cocktail bar, while the foredeck is dedicated to tender storage, with enough room to house a Caribe RIB and a centre console tender.
“
“
LUXURY AND THE CAPABILITY TO TRAVEL THE WORLD, ALL WITHIN A MANAGEABLE 30 METRES.
Nordhavn’s favourite aspect of the project was achieving the owner’s desires for an upper-level master suite spanning the full deck’s width, including a private, walk-out aft deck/balcony; and a full-width VIP guest cabin forward. The heavy full displacement hull has a sea kindly motion and stability to maintain comfort in even the roughest conditions that the yacht will routinely encounter. The added range will allow extended cruising time in the most remote areas of the world with concern for fuel. The yacht’s hull design, combined with the lush interior, means staying on board for any length of time under any conditions is a pure pleasure. In this project, as in all of their projects, PAE recognised how much design and thought goes into the creation of a semicustom/custom yacht. There are so many aspects to consider from the capability and safety of the boat, to meeting the owner’s’ specific criteria and making sure engineering and aesthetics harmonise with each other. In Lacey Kay they have clearly met their objectives. This is the second year that Nordhavn have attended the awards in Venice and their appreciation of their unexpected win against such notable competition was expressed on their return to the US. When asked about the importance of the awards Jim Leishman, the VP of PAE/ Nordhavn said “The industry recognition for excellent design is very important and this award will serve to help the buying public with their decision process”. As for future plans, Nordhavn will continue to build additional 96 models with varying interiors and decor which are quite different from the Lacey Kay.

M/Y Destiny has been a project with a clear focus right from the outset. From the very first briefing, the architecture and design of M/Y Destiny focused on the efficient use of space. The remit was to create a collection of ambient environments for luxury living. With a style that is modern-minimalistic, the use of light and the functionality of the space have been optimised to provide the maximum perception of the internal expanse. This refit was designed to create a new yacht, a yacht which could be really enjoyed at all times and in all spaces. Modern and minimalistic are the keywords of this yacht, where light and functionality are perfectly balanced. Following the brief of the young owners, who specifically asked for an “all-white” yacht, the design approach embodied the term ‘less is more’. The brief of the “all-white” yacht was strongly influenced by the owner’s passion for modern art. As such, the design in part focused on displaying his stunning modern art paintings in the best way, whilst still creating a cosy ambiance. There is a great attention to detail and use of bespoke furniture with a minimalistic style, they perfectly merge and contribute to the harmony achieved in the full project. Custom made for this project are exquisite pieces from Luxury Projects: the ‘waving’ dining table and the ‘glowing’ coffee table in three pieces, these creations are unique art in their own right. The salon, in particular, represents the incredible dimensions of space for a yacht of this size. The cosy salon with the relaxed aft area as well as the custom lounge sofa opposite the new large television, in conjunction with the new outdoor seating area, demonstrates explicitly how Luxury Projects have created continuity from outdoor to indoor. This seamless connection between the outdoor and indoor areas was critical in ensuring that the boat’s new design met the brief. As ever Laura Pomponi would only source from high-end suppliers and on this particular project they included products

from companies including Altraluce, Atelier du Litoral and Flexform. A new innovative lighting system is another key aspect of M/Y Destiny, creating differences in the perception of spaces and surfaces. Using a stateof-the-art LED technique (indirect light combined with strings no more grids of ceiling spots), white colour temperatures were carefully selected along with silver foil ceiling recessed surfaces. An advanced LED System was also used for all new outdoor lights. LP themselves designed the décor lamps and custom made wall light in the owner and guest cabins. The sundeck offers an incredible space, which allowed LP to create different areas for enjoying sunbathing, dining, lounging and relaxing. The design achieved the realization of intimate atmospheres for all the outdoor spaces, a total new layout of the fly, where a new lounge sofa was added facing the newly created dining area. The new entertainment system provided is neatly integrated in the new interior. The owners’ joy and appreciation for the work completed by Luxury Projects was evident as they commented “From all this experience, the best thing was the shock I had when I first saw the job done. I fell in love with Destiny the second I walked into her main deck lounge, not only the work and craftsmanship was perfectly done but specifically how Luxury Projects made the perfect use of each and every room and everything so extremely beautiful and useful at the same time”. Laura Pomponi believes that the success of the project is an absolute credit to the relationship of cooperation, inclusion and complete understanding that Luxury Projects formed with the owner from the very beginning. When that relationship worked so well, the project was set to succeed. The process began with immediate effect when the Luxury Projects team began to translate the conceptual design into working drawings and contractors and suppliers were immediately assigned to the job. The owners entrusted Laura Pomponi
with all outsourcing, as well as onsite management and design choices. As a result, Laura was able to run the project in an astonishing time frame within the planned budget with spectacular results and quality. On receiving the awards, Laura stated ‘We at Luxury Projects are proud and excited about this great achievement. It is a wonderful recognition and reward for all the hard work done by my team and I thank everybody for trusting us and our passion in designing and creating new projects.’ Laura’s other entry into the Awards M/Y Nero was also a deserved winner on the night, ‘Our Clients are extremely happy at the success of their superyachts at the International Yacht & Aviation Awards. Both of the awarded yachts will for sure increase their appeal to the charter market in the Mediterranean at the start of this new season.’ Laura’s workload remains a constant and exciting challenge and Luxury Projects are now busy developing new concepts for several different Superyachts from 58m to 85m for North European shipyards and as well as their new venture into interior design styling for private aviation. From Laura’s perspective and vast experience of high-end interior design of both re-fits and new constructions, the craft of interior design is a continually exciting challenge. ‘It is always a great creativity effort to allow innovative design concepts to be neatly integrated in a new interior.’ Her philosophy behind her creativity is that she considers each project from the perspective of entering the mindset of the clients through simply listening and observing their lifestyle. She realises their visions in term of spaces, functionalities and innovation. For Laura, a yacht has to give energy and pleasure to be lived in, the colours, materials and finishes play the key role in transpiring this. She considers her impressive number of successful refit projects to have always been an opportunity to change the old for the new, adding less to create more. Her signature is to strive to create the unique in a distinctive style which uses the combination of special custom made luxury materials, which are predominantly natural and re-engineered.
ELISABETH HARVEY DESIGN DIRECTOR - JET AVIATION DESIGN STUDIO
What projects have you recently completed?
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond:
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements.
Alongside the above projects, we have just completed an amazing promotional design launched at the European Business Aviation
1. More refined use of interior space and proportion. Bedrooms and bathrooms are extended to be much more than functional spaces, but areas in which to fully relax. Dining and living spaces merge and cooking preparation moves away from commercial aviation, becoming more elegant and multifunctional. 2. The search for ultimate comfort in the air. As flying times increase, so do the requirements for enhanced sleeping, relaxing dining and entertainment possibilities in the interior. 3. Technology and innovation will be enhanced. No longer an add-on to the design at some secondary stage, technology will be integrally designed within the backbone of the interior, and remain predominantly hidden from view. 4. Designing fully with the aircraft in mind. Unlike home and yacht design, exterior parameters are set in aviation. We’re challenged to work with the existing space and create something surprising and unusual with the layout to enhance the experience one has in the interior. This lends scope for optical illusions to come into play. 5. Sustainability takes on a new focus. Whilst our interiors are entirely bespoke and necessarily luxurious, using only the finest materials, all components are respectfully integrated into the interior, with the quality of build and finish giving each aircraft a true longevity that can be appreciated for years into the future.
I find any design which challenges traditional thinking particularly inspiring. Perhaps a good example would be Abu Dhabi’s new Louvre museum designed by Jean Nouvel. For me it is about quality in its highest form, with function and aesthetics achieving a standard beyond the ordinary. With regards to aviation interior design, it is much more than making the space look stylish and attractive; it is about understanding and working with the full potential of the space and enhancing our client’s living experience in flight.
Conference and Exhibition in Geneva. The Jet Aviation Base Design Studio was responsible for bringing to life two diverse, yet complementary design schemes, one for a B787-9 and one for an A350900 aircraft, against the backdrop of showcasing our design process. The highlight of this was a film, created in cooperation with ACA Advanced Computer Art, which shows how we as a Design Studio reach a highly bespoke and custom designed interior, from the very first sketch to final delivery of the aircraft to our customer – every element considered and designed with our client in mind. Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? In the specialized field of private aviation interior design, I see our clientele taking more advantage of the luxury of speed and space in creating the most sophisticated and tailor-made interiors for our clients. It’s a move towards what I call “ultraaircraft” design: the ultimate interiors for our clients in terms of comfort, functionality and luxury. The future is about consolidating aviation design with lifestyle – a discipline which stands proud alongside high-end residential and super-yacht design, able to meet the needs of the most demanding clients with sophisticated design and creative technical solutions, with the highest attention paid to every detail.

What products/services could you not live without when designing? For me, a soft lead pencil, a graphics tablet, a passion for design and an enquiring and detailed mind are essential to create industry-leading private aircraft cabins. The place that gives you most inspiration? I find that anywhere where I can appreciate both the wonder and force of nature particularly inspiring. That may be sitting with a cool glass of wine watching the sun set over the Mediterranean sea in the south of France, appreciating a fierce thunderstorm at the end of a hot summer’s day in my hometown of Basel or watching as the wide open expanse of the Russian Steppe unfolds beneath me as I fly, for example, from Beijing back to Switzerland.
MICHELA REVERBERI OWNER - MICHELA REVERBERI STUDIO
Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience etc.). I graduated in Architecture in Rome. After ten years’ experience in other architecture studios, of which eight were spent in Luigi Sturchio’s office, I started my own firm. What projects are you currently working on? I am developing a project of an 80m M/Y for Turquoise Yachts, a skyscraper for Vitruvius in Hong Kong and a 7-star resort in Tuscany. What projects have you recently completed? I just completed the refit of 64m S/Y Spirit of the C’s by Perini and the 55m M/Y Quinta Essentia. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? The refit of Spirit was carried out by Compositeworks Shipyard and the construction of Quinta Essentia was carried out by the Italian Sea Group. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Yacht design years ago drew its main references from the sea and projects were mainly founded on the idea the boats were used to cruise the seas. Despite how luxurious they were, architectonical and design choices were relegated to a small pool of aesthetic referring models, extremely identified and definitely limited compared to the aesthetical, architectonical and technological world available for urban projects. The gap between the two worlds was quite clear.
But as it is instinctual to look further, to experience, to contaminate and to be contaminated, to structure and de-structure, overcome and return, I think more and more that yacht design is going towards the overcoming of this gap.
could look forward, considering that since the beginning the choice of the spotlight was generally inadequate.
Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss?
Music and fun. I enjoy doing what I do and I love working with people I esteem and that share my same passion for their work.
A greater awareness of the emotional potential of any projects that are going to be developed, assuming some risks in overcoming rules. All the choices shall tend to a merge and integration with the environment and a much greater respect for the natural elements that the boat will cross. Trends going forward? A wider coherence between the interior and exterior of yachts until a fade between the boundaries. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. I am particularly fascinated in managing potentiality offered by the quantity and dimension of glass surfaces. On Stella Maris, for instance, the dimensions of the windows were amazing and they surrounded the salons on three sides. The project emphasized the verticality of the space, the power of the light, the unusual relationship between empty and full, reinterpreting the diversity and original features of the boat, connecting all elements through a rewriting of rules that govern the arrangement of the spaces and relationship between light and shadow, full and empty. A solution for artificial light had to be found as well at that point, it required a solution that
What products/services could you not live without when designing?
Any final thoughts? I am always ready to face any challenge, without prejudices and preconceptions, in order to achieve projects that look different and I will greatly enjoy. So, a little bit about you: Your favourite place to travel to in the world? All places where I can find new ideas and enjoy my family and friends, but Brazil has a special meaning for me. It is where everything started! All non-places where I can escape in books and dreams. Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? I feel so happy when I spend my time in some boutique hotels in London, enjoying food in good fish restaurants in Paris and bars on the seaside and looking at the sunset with a glass of wine. I must add a special hotel for me, the Dylan hotel in Amsterdam, where I realized the biggest gift I received in my life was arriving and my life wouldn’t be the same anymore. The place that gives you the most energy? Rome, the city where I live. I love it. Despite its several defects, it remains a very sensual city, able to provide big emotions for me.

JAY BEEVER VICE PRESIDENT, INTERIOR DESIGN - EMBRAER EXECUTIVE JETS
What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? In general terms I feel design is increasing exponentially in its value to customers and manufacturers. More and more OEM’s equal each other out in technical and manufacturing capabilities and therefore find the primary differentiator is design which enables the character and personality of their brands to stand out. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. 1) Hide technology components that clutter the environment. 2) Recyclable or sustainable materials. Still relevant. 3) Bio mimicry 4)Discrete personalization sandbox zones that “Wow” the customer when used. 5) Exoskeleton design.
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? From an industrial design standpoint create canvases that allow the customer maximum material application diversity. From and interior design point of view I would present the customer with multiple design trends so as to gauge interest in novel vs. traditional schemes. Less veneer and more trimmed surfaces in areas like bulkhead covers. This provides a more home-like environment. Then make sure they feel they have designed the interior instead of you.
And key trends that we should be aware of?
A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? The field of design allows most designers to live personal and professional lives that blend. It is very important to shut off the work side of your mind but often the fun at home and with family involves sharing the ideas in both directions. However, empowering employees to help manage projects enables for work life balance.
There are exciting developments in window systems and how we consider the external environment inside the aircraft.
How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?
What projects are you currently working on?
Very important due to the deliberate focus on design and its influence on contemporary trends. This organization pushes the status quo and allows the design community access to many new ideas which become tomorrow’s normal.
We have found much success in our Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 interior designs and due to this we are pushing this DNA into all of our products. Though I can’t specifically state which projects I have running I can say they are exciting and will break through what we consider aircraft interiors to be today.
54 Luxe et al
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? To continue to learn from my customers and develop further skills in relevant design trends and technical tools. The focus on nonaerospace applications and their potential use in aircraft interiors. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself: The car you drive? BMW 328 Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Sardinia, Italy Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? Hotel Pitrizza, Costa Smeralda Sardinia, Italy Your favourite food and drink? Bandaras fillet mignon with a Kettle One vodka martini with blue cheese olives.
BARBARA AMERIO OWNER - AMER YACHTS
Tell us a little about your background (education, experience etc.). Born in Sanremo, a nice town close to the French border in a strategic touristic area. After linguistic and nautical studies I started my work experience very young in the Permare owned by my family where I grew up and built my position through different disciplines. Essentially specialized in brokerage, and international sales. Now as co-owner with the other family members of an Italian nautical group called Permare including Amer Yachts super yacht building and after-sale services, owning several shipyards in our region. What projects are you currently working on? We are actually working on a one-off 110’unit built for a Russian client who is a great Amer yachts supporter, as this is the third custom boat made for him. The launching will be for summertime and she will attend the next European boat shows. The third 94’ will be the next launching for an Italian client, we are so proud to create her innovative dream boat. As you can understand, a limited production is only for few lucky customers but this guarantees the best of material and labour and a direct line with the ownership, also dedicated after-sale service is provided. What projects have you recently completed? 2016 for Amer yachts has been very successful we have introduced the Amer Cento Quad, after the previous 94’ Save the Sea. We have been awarded during Cannes boat show at the World Yacht Trophies The Most Innovative Boat of the Year in the category 24-40m and our company has gained the title of one of the
100 excellences of the Made in Italy of the year and later nominated by the Foreign office as Ambassador for the Italian design day.. We can say we are satisfied for all energies spent in this amazing Iconic Amer Cento project. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? All comes from the long research in improving Amer performances at the sea. The latest idea shared with Volvo Penta is adopt their IPS engines in a super yacht and obtain the proof that we can deeply reduce consumptions, air emissions, noise and vibrations granting much interior space and much manoeuvrability. What is extraordinary is that clients and captains have responded so quickly motivating us by their increasing interest and positive reactions. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? Tradition, our business has started in 1973 and now three generations are working together pushed by sea and work passion. Strong and solid group where profits are always re-invested in innovation, flexible and fast in reacting and in adopting futuristic vision about nautical world. Great respect for all our workers and suppliers, only a great team could participate in building in harmony unique boats such Amer Yacht models. Do you have any predictions for upcoming trends/design directions? Different approach in respecting the environment with a research in eco-friendly material and components. Additional
glass surfaces, balconies, stern beach platforms to gain panoramic views and recreational and wellness areas. More and more iconic Made in Italy and Art craft on board. After minimal style, wood is back but more natural treated and sophisticated. Boats will become main houses in the next generations. To live close to the sea is healthy. Designers will work on the same boat layout but adapted for different buyers and different seas. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/ affected your work in recent years. IPS system has changed our nautical life, we proudly were the first and now the challenge doesn’t stop. More and more efficient vessels with high comfort on board to maximize the stay at the sea. Stabilizers, domotics, electronics, fins are still evolving each year and can be a one supplier integrated installation. What do you feel are the biggest challenges the super yacht industry will have to face in the future? Hybrid boats, hydrogen boats, foil boats are the future. But first of all we have to protect and save the sea and teach it to the future generations. Fight against Sea pollution is a real priority. What are your current plans for 2017? This year I’m nominated as Design ambassador for the nautical sector to promote Italian design in Middle east countries. I want to improve the collaboration with Universities and Italian design schools for new projects for students for approaching them to pleasure vessels. I’m in the Ucina Association Board.

Aquarius’ interiors are the work of Autoban & BTA Design, who have transformed the vessel’s internal volume of 300 gross tonnes into a space of beauty. Indoor areas include a spacious fullbeam main saloon featuring large windows and twin fold-down bulwarks on either side, offering excellent views. The fold-down bulwarks are just off the formal dining room and enhance the dining experience when at anchor. With exterior entertainment and relaxation areas being a major focus of the design, one of the most remarkable features onboard is the full-beam, three way-opening aft beach club. With port and starboard fold out sections, an extendable bathing platform and the sundeck featuring a large sun pad aft on the hard top, this stylish beach club can be opened up on the three sides when at anchor. A space such as this is more common on much larger yachts, but Mengi Yay and designer Oğuzhan Güler managed to create a luxurious and well thought out beach environment that sets Aquarius apart from other yachts in this size range. Accommodation onboard is composed of a master suite located forward on the main deck, four guest cabins and four crew cabins suitable for a staff of eight. The master suite is spacious and is found forward on main deck, it is not quite full beam throughout, as two private fixed balconies, one on each side, take

up some of the space. This sacrifice is certainly worth the interior space lost when considering the view and fresh sea breeze that can be enjoyed without having to leave the comfort of the suite. The four additional ensuite guest cabins can be found on the lower deck. The aft bridge deck can be arranged to host a tender or store other water sport equipment and toys. A couple of 1,450hp CAT C32 engines power the vessel, allowing for a top speed of 15 knots. Cruising speed of 12 knots will deliver the maximum cruising range from the 33,000 litre fuel tanks. Autoban’s combination of light and dark wood with beige hues give the interior a contemporary classic feel. This is starkly contrasted with the ultra-modern style of the main bathroom, here Autoban have kept it simple black and white with an ornate marble effect over the walls and the floors making the entire room feel luxurious. The main salon benefits from large windows, allowing natural light to flood the room and further enhance the cosy, warm feeling that Autoban have created in this space. On the upper deck, Autoban have created the ultimate luxury of having a hot tub near the bow of the yacht – this is strategically placed next to a screen where the inhabitants can play their favourite films and truly entertain their guests. Autoban was founded by Seyhan Özdemir and Sefer Çağlar in 2003, they are an internationally renowned firm based in Istanbul, Turkey. Their works range from architectural design, interior design and product design. As interior designers, Autoban respond with sensitivity and innovation to every client project, seeking to understand its history and shape its future without assumption or replication. Autoban celebrate form: they are fascinated by uncommon materials, and common materials used in uncommon ways. They skilfully and instinctively push materials to reveal their full potential. Autoban enhance function, they design for people and for the enjoyment of the environment that comes from its
efficient and intelligent design. There cardinal rules are to design a functional space which will inspire its inhabitants. Autoban creates character rich designs that imprint themselves on the people who enjoy them, and spaces that foster memorable interactions between users. Approaching each project initially as storytellers, their work seeks to understand the character and context of each project. Each element is informed by a uniquely space-centric approach, blending with sophistication, and minimal forms with rich materials. Autoban’s favourite aspect of the project was the generous interior spaces that they were given, this allowed them to create an inner shell which served as the foundation of the design. The success of the design, as evidently appreciated by their industry peers that voted for the project, is that every single item and detail is custom designed for the client and takes into account his lifestyle and way of living. Mengi Yay is one of the most longestablished yacht building companies in Turkey established since 1964 by Ramazan Mengi in Ayvansaray as a small workshop. After Muzaffer Yay became partner with Ramazan Mengi in 1985, they combined their surnames and Mengi Yay was established as the company name. Their main goal is to be recognized as an international and leading Turkish yacht building company in their field. They aim to design exceptional and high quality yachts through understanding the desires and expectations of their clients and leading innovation whilst maintaining a principled and responsible approach.

With great pride The Italian Sea Group have launched their largest motor yacht yet, Admiral’s new 180-foot Quinta Essentia. The yacht’s naval architecture was done by the Dutch firm Vripack, who worked with Dobroserdov Design to create a progressive-looking profile over the full-displacement hull. Entirely made in aluminum, she boasts a gross tonnage of 870 GT. This magnificent vessel can now add the title of ‘Winner’ at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the Main Salon category to its list of achievements. The award winning interior design of Quinta Essentia was performed by Michela Reverberi Studios, based in Rome, who described the ideas behind the design. “The project was conceived from the owner’s desire to build a boat that could evoke all the characteristic elements of Tuscany, a place that the owner particularly loves; he has a property in Tuscany, where they produce wine and oil. The input was to evoke in the project suggestions of that country and activities related to countryside life. The project offered a big challenge, considering the difference of the two natural elements to take into consideration, earth and water, and the unusualness of their combination. I have not emphasised the idea either of the difference, or the break between the elements, but rather the possibility of coexistence. From this consideration, we searched to find a key to access these elements in the marine world and its current aesthetic and cultural configuration that did not lead to the distortion of the element of the sea, but instead, that allowed the coexistence of these two giant protagonists of nature, the sea and the countryside.” The project also had to take into consideration another of the owner’s expectation, the representation of the
70 Luxe et al
four natural elements of which the boat, as a whole and in its synthesis, was to be comprised of, alongside the addition of it’s fifth element — ‘quinta essentia’. It began with the choosing of atypical elements, identifying those that that encompassed a highly significant meaning. “The wine, the glass, the movement that creates the liquid in the typical gesture of the taster when you spin it before tasting it, grapes, vine leaves in their full range of colours available in the different seasons, the colour of the earth, the sky.” Elements were used through the study of certain movement, though not necessarily always as a direct representation but at least as an influence. “The wall of the staircase contains within it the pattern and colour of the representation of the movement of the wine in the glass, which was exaggerated to become a marine wave.” The client’s expectations and desires were addressed and resolved by the adoption of unexpected viewpoints reaching a balance of style with unique, sophisticated and innovative solutions. Traditional yachts often have formal salons and cabins that are hardly ever used, limiting space for different types of entertainment on board. In search for efficiency, Quinta Essentia’s owner created a layout with four different types of activity on the four decks where all space on board is used in the optimal way. Quinta Essentia has a volume of 873 GT, 25% more than her Dutch competitors. The high volume translates not only in more square meters but also in more deck heights. The yacht features huge open and covered deck areas, which creates a balanced space for a relaxed and informal lifestyle. When sitting aft on the main deck, the owner and guests can enjoy a large lounging area overlooking a huge pool. The engine room was moved to the center of the yacht to create a vast Wellness and Spa area on the lower deck aft, featuring a steam room, sauna room,

treatments room, relaxation room and side balcony. The Wellness & Spa area is directly connected to the swimming platform aft. Above, on the upper deck, lies the lofty main saloon with an indoor/ outdoor area for alfresco dining. The top deck presents a spacious gym with massive windows and a jacuzzi to relax outside. One of Quinta Essentia’s luxuries has to be her beach deck. The entire full beam aft section of the lower deck has been dedicated to wellness and watersports. Here guests can be treated in an on-board massage room, sauna and hamman. After which, guests are led onto the 45 square metre swim platform where sunloungers and cocktails await. A custom tender was designed to match the style of Quinta Essentia and safely transport her guests in luxury to port. The tender is launched through a hull opening forward on main deck. The yacht is equipped with an Auxilia Hybrid System, zero speed stabilizers which can operate when anchored and a touch and go helipad. Quinta Essentia can accommodate twelve guests in six suites, with convertible lower deck staterooms able to be converted from a four to six cabin layout. With accommodation for 13 crew members, Quinta Essentia can provide a perfect yacht charter experience. The award-winning result aboard Quinta Essentia is an interior décor that is surprisingly feminine and delicate for a yacht with such a sporty exterior profile.

IT HAS A TIMELESS, INVITING, COSY FEEL DÉCOR.
Silver Fast is the fourth and most recent superyacht built by Australia’s premier luxury yacht builder Silver Yachts, owned by Guido Krass. She is the most advanced, eco-fuel efficient vessel in the ground-breaking Silver Series. Designed by Espen Oeino, one of world’s famous yacht designers, Silver Fast retains the super-sleek contour and unique hull lines of her much-prized predecessors but with a striking new all dark silver paint. At 77 metres (252.6ft) with a top speed of over 27 knots in optimal conditions, Silver Fast is the world’s largest and fastest aluminium motor yacht with conventional propulsion in terms of length to speed ratio. Silver Fast is also the fastest long range cruising yacht – 4,500 nautical miles at 18 knots and 6,000 nautical miles at 14 knots with an already proven capability to effortlessly complete long passages in every sea state. She is capable of crossing the Atlantic at approximately 22 knots cruising speed, which is a record-breaking performance. Silver Yachts are now also celebrating success as winners at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category Power Yacht over 60m. The design criteria was to create a boat with exceptional performance, tremendous range and very capable seakeeping. Espen Oeino created a semidisplacement shallow draught design that adopted the lightweight slender concept. A high length:beam ratio has traditionally been the route to high speed which when incorporated with an easily driven hull provides the benefits of greater efficiency and excellent seakeeping. The build process was kept simple – conventional shaftdrive, welldesigned systems and large technical spaces. Silver yachts are subtle, shapely low-profile darts, distinct in their class by being low, narrow and very sleek. Clearly influenced by executive jet aircraft design with a rounded raked fuselage-like superstructure, the all-aluminium construction is simply finished with a single dark shade of
78 Luxe et al
metallic silver. The design also achieves a further comparison with aircraft design with its lightweight properties. The gross tonnage of under 1,000GT is half that of some yachts of comparable length, in part due to the aluminium honeycomb construction of much of the interior, but also because of the paredback beam and height which means there is physically less yacht. Designed by Vain Interiors of Germany, the interior of Silver Fast has a matte finish throughout. With a colour palette of greys and browns and dressed with white framed monochrome prints, accompanied by silver metal painted accent panels, grey coloured mirrors and the natural shine of the silk carpet. All surfaces are chosen to get a nice patina which will become even more beautiful in time. More than using extremely rare materials, the real luxury with this interior are the furniture and details based on the team’s design and perfectly executed by European manufacturers. There is a gentle sense of masculinity in the design. Staircases are clad in stitched mid-grey leather matched by the handrails, and carpets are of grey silk. It has a timeless, inviting, cosy feel décor. There are three levels for guests to enjoy. Four guest cabins are located on the lower deck with three spacious VIP cabins situated up and towards the front, and then the owner’s suite is on the owner’s deck at the front. The main salon is a cool space and features a sliding glass panel that closes off the library from the main space. The sundeck is an ideal, private space. The Jacuzzi comes with a carbon fibre cover it can also be used as a dance floor. This deck also includes a bar, custom fridge and a TV, and there is also a built-in barbeque and additional storage, with seating at the front. There is a horseshoe sofa around two tables. Loose Paola Lenti furniture adds a little flexibility and colour. The next deck down is entirely for the
owner’s use. The master cabin is vast and offers expansive views through the forward windows. An indoor sunpad, accessed up a few steps, sits forward of the berth. To the rear of the deck is the owner’s lounge, with sliding doors opening onto a private terrace. A staircase links to the VIP guest accommodation on the main deck. Eight crew cabins are found on the lower deck, along with the rest of the guest accommodation: four large en suites. Two further crew cabins are located on this lower-deck guest space. A steam room, sauna, massage area and hairdressing station surround an area for exercise. The sloping aft wall, the transom of the yacht, rises to reveal the large teak-laid swim platform complete with more Paola Lenti furniture. The key feature of the design is the long expanse of glass that extends along the majority of the upper deck. When desired, the air-conditioned interior can be exposed to the exterior by retracting the floor-to ceiling windows. This space overlooks a large working deck, which is home to a couple of large tenders, launched and retrieved by crane. Above this deck is another large open space, which can serve as a secondary helideck, while a Jacuzzi is concealed under the mast structure. Silver Fast has benefited significantly from the Guido Krass’ vision and commitment towards achieving constant improvements in the design, build and operation of the vessel. Whatever is required of this yacht it can deliver, be it cover distance, cruise slowly, explore off the beaten track, sail into Monaco or entertain friends and family.
