This issue we are taking a closer look at some of the winning projects for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2016. The Awards, which were held in Venice at the end of May, are now in their sixth year and celebrate the best in design, from a design rather than technical perspective. Personally I very much like the fact that the awards and projects span two so intrinsically linked but very different industries – yacht design and aviation.
with winning projects featured in both issues. This month, we also talk to some of the key designers on a global stage who are shaping the superyacht industry and ask them their views on design directions - and we look ahead to The International Superyacht Design Awards at the end of September 2016 and the focus on innovation and direction in interior schemes for yachts. It is an exciting time in the industry and over the coming months Luxe et al will focus on the key elements of the design process and offer clear directon, endorsement and focus. It’s time we as publishers focused on the components of our projects, celebrated design directions and made great leaps forward in design terms and real terms. Until next month,
The projects can be seen in detail both this month and next month,

Argo Navis Yacht Design is an ambitious specialist design, engineering and consulting company, dedicated to re-launching Greece’s maritime expertise, developing an enviable range of vessels that compete with the world’s elite. Their latest design and development, Horizon 70, was the winner in the category of Concept Design up to 40M at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016. Horizon 70 is developed with an intention to offer remarkable style and impeccable design. It’s a synthesis of modern, sharp lines and elements of a timeless evocative look, such as the sheer line dropping down towards the stern. This concept aims to offer the same spacious areas that are usually found on 80-foot yachts. A sizable swimming platform, broad aft stairs, huge sun-bed, cockpit area that can easily accommodate 12 people and forward seating area with automatic shade are just some of the features that make this vessel outstanding.
“ Horizon 70 is developed with an intention to offer remarkable style and impeccable design. It’s a synthesis of modern, sharp lines and elements of a timeless evocative look, such as the sheer line dropping down towards the stern. ”
Side windows run all along the side of the hull, offering astounding views from each cabin. The ceiling of the main saloon contains a skylight of 10 square meters providing natural illumination. All areas with windows and glass have fully automatic blinds for total coverage if so desired. Accommodation is divided into three main sections: a full beam master bedroom with en-suite, an entrance lobby and main saloon offering standing height of 2.4 meters, crew quarters are placed at fore end and are completely separated from guest premises. The yacht is equipped with a bespoke tender of 4.6m stored underneath the sunbed. It can take up to 5 adults for a quick shore transfer or it can be utilized for any kind of water sport; deploying and recovery is made via aft platform lifting mechanisms. The very top of the yacht’s hardtop holds a pair of solar panels, offering sufficient power for mandatory systems such as bilge or fire alarm even if the boat is abandoned for a time. VOLVO delivers the complete propulsion system; triple engine installation combined with IPS technology, giving outstanding capabilities and performance. Horizon 70 is top coated with Alex Seal metallic paint as a standard, so no compromise is made on aesthetics. Putting safety first, the designers have even implemented the radical change of replacing the traditional steering wheel with a single joystick, fully capable of maneuvering, hidden under the console. Experienced captains and mechanical engineers were involved in the design

process from day one, over-seeing the mooring arrangement, helm console ergonomics, machinery spaces and layout, ensuring that real knowledge was applied. The team behind this notable engineering and intricate design, Mr. Haythem Macki (Chairman and Founder Sapphire Marine Group SMG) and Mr. Dusan Antic (Partner and Head of Design and Engineering AYD) are well-experienced yachtsman who are always ready for innovative ideas. Antic believes that Horizon 70 is defining a new segment in the leisure market, where future yacht owners are getting great value, including “superyacht” features, at a reasonable cost. Indeed, offered cabin height, sizable corridors, and spaciousness are not usual for 60 and 70 footers. Describing Horizon 70 in a few words, Antic said: “Design and style defined by function”. Sapphire Marine is not one to compromise on quality. All materials are supplied from well-known vendors, mostly in Europe. Interiors are completely produced in Germany and sent over for final installation. Meanwhile, electrical systems, cabling and other components are shipped from Slovenia. Complete surface treatment and the final topcoat process are entrusted to a well-known UK company, and are completed on site. The final production of the yacht takes place in Oman, at Sapphire Marine facilities. Horizon 70 will be certified by DNV-GL as a vessel of design category B: ‘Offshore.’ Chairman of the company Mr. Macki feels very confident about the project: “We are very excited to have an opportunity to build a masterpiece like Horizon 70. With inhouse expertise we gained through many successful projects for the Navy and Coast Guard, and great support of our sister company Argo Navis Studio there is no doubt that the final product will be a great success.” The team’s collective skill-set enables bespoke solutions from conception to delivery. The software used encompasses naval design, finite element analysis, tolling and prototyping that facilitate outstanding quality design output, meticulous accuracy in measurements and renowned results. For Argo Navis the absolute priority is to bring Horizon 70 on the water and hand it over to the owner. As per schedule they are planning sea trials and final handover in Q2 2017. She will be navigating in the south of France and the west Italian coast.

Brunella Pignatiello Chief Executive Officer, Solido Interior Design
What projects are you currently working on? A concept project for luxury apartments in Hangzhou, China
believe that my work intends to create each time new and exclusive settings, with a chic and luxurious atmosphere that ensures aesthetics and functionality at the highest level.
A renovation of a 15th century building included interior design of its luxury apartments, Piazza Borghese, Rome, Italy
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements.
What projects have you recently completed? • • •
Interior design for a private villa in Capri, Italy Interior design Private Residence at Via Condotti, Rome, Italy Interior design for an executive office at Piazza di Spagna, Rome, Italy
Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Interior design orientation is now focused on the design of a discreet and handcrafted luxury, characterized by the great quality of its products. In my opinion interior design should be considered as a tailored suit to be defined in all its precious details.
• • • • • • •
Care of the owner’s needs and desires Organization of space Study of functionality and aesthetics Attention to environmental impact Reaching the maximum result Insertion of new technologies Push the design beyond the functional aspect to create extraordinary atmospheres.
What products/services could you not live without when designing? In my projects, the label “made in Italy” is always exalted. It is the key element that combines products and services, led by our professionalism and creativity, craftsmen and Italian companies are spokesmen and architects of our style.
Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? Wide and bright spaces. Tight mixture between internal and external. Harmonious but sophisticated lines. Trends going forward? I do not believe in fashions and trends, I
Any final thoughts? Research, liability, design and innovation are fundamentals in our job. Solido Interior Design is oriented to the internalization and spread of its work, away from passing trends and styles, but close to timeless elegance.

Vittorio Garroni Carbonara President, Garroni Design What projects are you currently working on? We are currently working with Jeanneau Leaders: fast motor boats and yachts, and Jeanneau NC Class: sedan motor yachts. We are also the architects for some Jeanneau Sun Odyssey Deck Saloon sailing yachts. Besides Jeanneau and Prestige, Garroni Design works also for Cruise and Mini-Cruise Vessels design, for custom yachts and superyachts.A major project right now is a project with the worldwide Hotel Yachts organization. For 25 years, Garroni Design have been the leading architectural designers for several brands of the French shipyard Bénéteau Group, including Prestige Motor Yachts and Prestige Yachts. What projects have you recently completed? Two new Prestige motor yachts have been introduced in the market in the last months: the Prestige 680 and the Prestige 630, the smaller brothers of the Prestige 750 and winner at the IY&A 2015 Awards. A number of Leaders, fast motor yachts, have entered the market during last 12 months: Leader 36, Leader 46 and the Leader 40, 2016 model. Regarding custom yachts, the Margot Sailing Yacht 45m is actually under completion and the Lucy 30m Sailing Mini-Cruiser is under development. Other projects are still confidential. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? For all the serial boats we currently work with the various Bénéteau Group production plants all around Europe; most of them are along the French Atlantic coast but others are in Poland
and, in Italy, there is the Monte Carlo Yachts shipyard producing some of the PRESTIGE Yachts. For Margot SY the Polish Conrad Yachts shipyard was involved.
Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Superyacht ownership is more and more demanding, not in terms of seagoing qualities but in terms of operational flexibility. As an example, the extreme destinations are becoming so popular that ice-class or capability of bearing ice-toys are now a must for the new concepts; doesn’t matter if realistically the yacht will not exceed the Mediterranean.
Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? The owner of our current project is always dreaming in excess: any inspiration urges new fancies that the designer must turn into constructive reality. Usually it turns into an exciting adventure but sometimes imagination exceeds feasibility.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. Identity, style, function, technology, and satisfaction.
And key trends that we should be aware of? Communication: design, to be successful, should sail on a strong media identity.
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. I love simplicity either for the outward appearance and for the interior ambience. The real capability is to keep the simplicity even in a complex or complicated organism. What products/services could you not live without when designing? The environment of my design studio, the people and the ambience. Most of my crew, including my son Camillo, grew with me while I was teaching yacht design at the University; after so many years we are totally and completely a team, and the newcomers quickly absorb such an atmosphere. My office is located in an historical garden: I couldn’t create it, but I selected and shaped it. Any final thoughts? Do you know why sea cruising is becoming more and more popular? As you leave the mainland you also disconnect from life’s problems and you can enjoy the real pleasure of relaxation. Designing boats and ships is closely aligned to cruising.

Dusan Antic Head of Design and Engineering / Founder / Partner, Argo Navis
What projects are you currently work on? I am mostly occupied with Horizon 70 which we are working on for Sapphire Marine. The yacht is carrying a small tender that, despite the pocket dimension, is giving us a hard time. Beside Horizon 70 that is well under production we are developing two new models that should complete HORIZON line. The entry model will be a 50 footer, based on a concept of a daily cruiser. The successor of HORIZON 70 will be a 100 footer based on semi-displacement hull with a goal to offer long range voyage at a reasonable speed and with highest efficiency.
What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Artofkinetik: Luxury powerboats Cosmo Explorer: Explorer superyachts Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? It is quite difficult to advise on specific direction because in many cases it is the Owners who have a huge influence on the design itself. I wouldn’t say that specific direction can be defined but what I definitely believe is that presence of windows, skylights, and any sources of natural light will be pushed to the limits in terms of size.
What projects have you recently completed? Not so recently but worth every mention is an iconic Hedonist 63ft yacht. On that specific project I was chief naval architect taking care of each detail at the highest end. Although the launch was back in 2010, where we stole the show in Cannes, I am still taking inspiration from that remarkable yacht. Other than that, my very favourite completed project is I Nova, a 153ft Explorer Yacht. There, I was owner adviser, production manager and quality control supervisor for two years. It was such a demanding project where the yacht was loaded with so many features, toys and options. Our running project Horizon 70 is actually a big reason for highlighting those two projects. It’s a 70 foot boat with many superyacht features and is inspired by the two aforementioned projects. Apart from those we have developed a line of sport fishing boats for Sapphire Marine starting at 32ft and going up to 45ft. Sea trials are scheduled for Q3 2016.
Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? Naval architects and engineers are pushing the boundaries of hull efficiency. Therefore, implementing twin or multihull forms, as well as some other unconventional shapes. It will be a difficult task to merge eye catching design and unconventional hull shapes in a single whole. No doubt it will be a challenge. Trends going forward? ECO friendly arrangements are a huge trend, mostly in terms of ship propulsion systems. Therefore, the presence of enormous glass surfaces hiding solar panels underneath is inevitable. The marine sector will definitely follow the car industry in terms of alternative sources of energy. Electric propulsion is fantastic in all aspects; the system is very quiet, there is no pollution, the speed regulation and manoeuvrability are excellent and finally you are able to cancel the engine room completely as such. As it sounds too good to be true, the problem of energy storage still remains.
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. One of the great yachts engraved in my memory is Feadship Musashi. Taking a closer look at the interior, at first sight you will notice a ship structure exposed. Of course the frames are coated at the highest spec but there are absolutely no decorative coverings. With this smart trick a designer can gain an unobstructed clear window area and a greater interior detail such as a ship frame. Amazing. What products and services you could not live without when designing? I would say the associates: having a great team next to you, giving you a real joy and inspiration. On the other side, I would really find difficult doing so many design iterations and tests without having great software at our disposal.
Any final thoughts? It is interesting that the size of the yacht does not play such an important role these days, contrary to the past. Not so long ago there was an unofficial competition all about the size and who will order and deliver the biggest yacht, but these days, it’s more about who will deliver the “smarter” yacht. Having said that I am mostly pointing to efficiency, ecology and space utilisation. Don’t you believe that Steve Jobs could not afford more than an 80 meter yacht? But just look at that masterpiece loaded with so many features… Feadship Venus is perfection indeed.

David Tydeman, CEO Marcus Wright, Lead In-House Stylist Oyster Yachts What projects are you currently working on? David: Oyster currently has 5 yachts in build: 3 more Oyster 825’s like Maegan, a special enlarged saloon 885-08 and the first Oyster 118. All are very different interiors, bespoke for their owners with all their styling and interiors being developed by Marcus working with the clients. What projects have you recently completed? David: Oyster 885-04 & 07 and the first two Oyster 885’s to be built with a Raised Deck, both styled internally by Marcus. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Marcus: Generally we handle most things in house, working closely with our partners for things like upholstery in order to keep abreast of trends and new materials. For the larger projects we do occasionally work with lighting consultants, acoustic specialists and the like. This additional input, and lessons learned in the bespoke superyacht world, tends to come in very handy throughout the range and we find many of the desirable qualities of our larger boats trickle down to the entry level Oysters. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Marcus: It seems as though Owners are keen to have a sanctuary from the heat of the midday Caribbean sun, with the increasingly popular placid schemes of muted and somewhat de-saturated base colours (often livened up with judicious use of accent colours in loose items of upholstery). The move towards these calm and almost bleached moods mean we are often asked for special wood finishes, and this represents a particular challenge to our joiners and finishing departments; increasingly the trend has been towards non-natural wood colours with pale driftwood like finishes being particularly popular. The problem is that trees don’t actually grow in those colours! We will always use the finest quality natural timbers and veneers, and have invested a great deal of time in achieving some beautiful limed finishes which knock back the full intensity of the wood colour while enhancing the natural beauty of the grain, and we are satisfied will
meet our standards and can confidently offer with the Oyster warranty. Owners are keen to achieve a more domestic standard of living when afloat. We carefully source high quality materials which would look more at home in a boutique hotel, but will still stand up to the rigours of passagemaking on a serious bluewater yacht; long gone are the days of vinyl covered seats just because they need to cope with wet oilskins! And on the larger yachts, this move towards ‘high end residential’ design tends to see feature items of furniture appearing to be freestanding rather than built-in. Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? Marcus: More and more Owners are asking for a more bespoke yacht, with greater choice and more opportunities to customise. It is a rewarding challenge to design a range of ‘standard Oyster yachts’ which can then be tailored to suit an individual. Owners are much more design aware and want to be able to select a variety of interesting fabrics and finishes, specify particular fittings and adjust the layout to suit their family’s needs. As we design and engineer the yachts fully in 3D aerospace engineering software, and cut all the joinery with the latest computer controlled robotic machinery, we are able to move quickly to vary the stock design a great deal to fully satisfy a discerning yachtsman’s particular requirements. The same can be said for the interior design itself; with a little fine tuning and careful material selection, a model in our range must be able to satisfy customers with traditional ‘seamanlike’ values one day, and then still appeal to an enthusiast of ultra rigid minimalism the next. Trends going forward? Marcus: We see movement towards much lighter, thinner elegant sections in contemporary furniture design, items being very clean, minimalist and thin edged with very rectilinear forms, contrasted by more informal and softer looking upholstery. It’s crucial that we carefully distil these design elements into something which is practical, safe and robust enough for life afloat without losing those aesthetic qualities. We have a tremendous reputation for serious goanywhere yachts for proper sailors and cannot just blindly follow fashion.
What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. Marcus: My favourite yacht so far has been Maegan; she’s probably the yacht I’d buy for myself! It was a particularly satisfying project as she was designed in conjunction with an Owner who is very much a design fanatic herself with a very focused view of where we were going; so under a very watchful eye and a tight brief, it was always going to be a highly successful project. The fact that she has been nominated for an interior design award is a testament to the success of this collaboration. The yacht has a very coherent scheme throughout in horizontally grained quarter sawn limed oak, with a walnut contrast band detail and an unusual but strikingly clean quarter sawn walnut sole. The bulkheads are split at dado height with white painted panelling to keep the cabins and corridor light and airy, with white leather upholstery in the saloon having the same effect. In order to avoid it all getting a little too white, we used a taupe lining material for the central overhead panels in the saloon and in the hull sides. It is all set off with carefully selected (expensive) rectangular light fittings which help to emphasise the minimalist feel without becoming overly hard or industrial looking. A key feature which was highly successful was the sliding partition and flush stowing door between the galley and saloon; the Owners are very social people and were keen that the galley became part of the entertaining space, rather than being ‘crew only’, however, it is easily closed off for more formal dining. What products/services could you not live without when designing? Marcus: Tracing paper and Magic Markers for a quick sketch; it’s far too easy to worry about the millimetres in accurate CAD design work before getting the overall concept clear in your head, and one can end up getting lost in a bit of ‘watchmaking’ in a little corner instead of dealing with the bigger picture. www.oysteryachts.com

Martin Corgo Creative Director, Corgo Design
What projects are you currently working on? At the moment we are lucky to be working for a private client on a 30M carbon fiber monohull with a modern and masculine look. A 55M concept is almost done to be presented in the boat show season as the opening of our European base studio. And finally the Argentinean Studio continue to work in the design of production of motor yachts up to 24M, that’s remains one of the strongest points of the team. What projects have you recently completed? The second unit of the Segue 26M was recently finished and the third unit will be delivered late this year. Of course, the INARA concept was presented at the IY&A awards in May. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? We worked mostly with private shipyards and their contractors. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Interior design in superyachts is following an evolution in terms of luxury experience for the owner, which can be seen in the integration of new technologies, lighting and materials. Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? I just find it interesting to see how the luxury car design is increasingly affecting the design, style and colors in the superyacht industry. Trends going forward? I think of myself as someone trying to ignore the trends to find new ideas and ways to develop them. However, sustainability is certainly a trend that affects us everyday and we have to follow it. What products/services could you not live without when designing? I could not survive in design without paper and a bic, but technology is something that gives you the power to see and create all the ideas inside of your mind, so you can show and present them without compromise. Any final thoughts? I think that in Yacht Design, as in every design field, the aim is to listen to the clients with a clear mind, just to be able to create something that reflects their emotions.

Generally speaking, the design of yacht interiors is becoming more modern and sophisticated, certainly, but with renewed intensity on comfortable, flexible layouts. Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? I enjoy mixing materials, and implementing the use of new lighting technology and interesting colors. Trends going forward? Big windows, more use of glass and a layout flexible to the owners’ needs. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. All my favorites centre on the use of strong architectural elements which define spaces, as well as contrasting colors and materials. What products/services could you not live without when designing? Mauro Micheli Chief Designer, Officina Italiana Design
What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? Design moves and develops with the time. Designers, as well as artists, often anticipate the future with their visions and their creations. That’s why their work is fully understood years after their creations. Let’s wait and see… Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. Infinite lines; no quick solutions. Balance in shapes. Irony. A realistic approach. Contemporary art, as a vision on future times. Good design never expires. And key trends that we should be aware of? Environment protection, as a general awareness everybody must take good care of. Useful creations, in order to avoid mere selfreference. What projects are you currently working on? We are working on different boats for Riva and Sanlorenzo, in the range from 30 to 160 ft, as well as four new models. They will go on water in 2016, among them a 100 ft Riva and a 78 ft Sanlorenzo, both with flying bridges. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Simple lines with attention to detail. Creations must not go out of fashion quickly. The more the lines are simple, the more the design is strong. Less is more, in other words: it seems so ordinary and banal, but it’s not! It’s really the major effort of my daily work. A designer’s work is so diverse. How do you manage to hold down a career and a life? The designer is a job like all the other ones. Everybody deals with daily difficulties in managing work and life though I never saw career and life as two different and counterpoised things.
The name of the company that I founded 25 years ago with my associate Sergio Beretta is in fact OFFICINA ITALIANA DESIGN (Italian Design Workshop) to stress the attention on design as a form of work.
How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? I like to share my projects, in which I strongly believe and to know which kind of reactions they cause. It is always a good method to stay grounded. The final judgement is always given by the market but the competition itself is very exciting and a great incitement!
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? To see on the water the boats we are currently working on and to see them appreciated by many customers. That’s the main satisfaction of our daily work.
Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself: The car you drive? Range Rover Vogue Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Italy Your favourite hotel? Grande Bretagne, Athens Favorite Restaurant? Ledoyen, Paris And Bar? Bar del Palazzetto under my home, with Gianna and the baby. The place that gives you the most energy? Greece And the place that enables you to totally relax? Eleuthera island in the Bahamas Your favourite food? Pasta aglio, olio, peperoncino e gamberi And drink? Red Italian wine Anything else interesting? Art.

What projects are you currently working on? As new build, we are working on a 65M traditional Phinisi and a 50M traditional Dhow, a 66’ fast composite sloop and a 43’ motor boat. As refit projects, we are working on a complete refit of Mirabella III (a 42M sloop), an interior refit on Nero (a 90M motor yacht), and Talitha (an 80M motor yacht). Regarding interior design projects, we are working a new build 59M motor yacht and an 80M VIP lounge on a supply vessel. Our engineering division is now working on two 60M multihull projects as a multipurpose vessel and yacht shadow. What projects have you recently completed? We have recently completed a new top deck for Talitha, honoured with the Best Refit Project 2015 by the International Superyacht Society, and Lamima, a 65M Phinisi built in Indonesia and completed in Bangkok. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Marina Barcelona 92, Futurnautic, Serviyates, Italthai Shipyard and the support of the Cluster Náutico de Barcelona, grouping all the local marine companies and professional offers to work together. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? To more liveable spaces; still luxurious and very well finished, but more focused on the ability to really live on board with less ostentation. Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? I do not really think in key design directions; we use to work with very different customers, different cultures, different points of view, different approaches. We work with all of them, and we sincerely enjoy this variety. Trends going forward? Comfort, design, simplicity, as it is on land. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. The recent ones are very different, but the key common elements are serene atmospheres, true relaxation and comfort. What products/services could you not live without when designing? Natural materials, craftsmanship. Any final thoughts? The best is to achieve these goals with any style, any size.

What projects are you currently working on? 60 Cantius Fly Bridge 54 Cantius Fly Bridge 50 Cantius Coupe
What is your most recently completed project? 54 Cantius Coupe
What companies did you collaborate with on those projects? Collaboration between Cruisers Yachts design and engineering team and Patrizio Facheris from Facheris Design and DLBA (Donald L. Blount & Associates) Navel Architecture marine engineering. Our CNC tooling needs were graciously met by Marine Concepts and Christensen Fiberglass.
Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss? Cruisers Yachts is a production yacht builder so we must meet the needs of a broader base of clientele. In our latest “Cantius Series” we asked for input from our dealers and owners to cater to their needs. Taking that input, we have placed emphasis on single level design allowing for easy transition from one area to the next; on the main level, you will find cooking, dining, and entertainment amenities, below you will find a more private area bathed by light from the atrium above, for the owners and VIP guests. Large glass hull side windows keep the lower living area airy and inviting with unique panoramic views.
Trends going forwards? Some general trends I see going forward, continue to blur the line between interior and exterior. Transform areas using fold down and slide out features, to increase entertainment options, convert use-specific zones into multi-purpose areas. Blending materials is important: glass, steel, stone, wood and leather. We should strive to integrate the ever increasing “smart” digital technology into future designs. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements... Key elements from our Cantius series interior include: • Easy transitioning between living and entertainment areas • 360 degree panoramic views from the salon • Easily transform to open up to the elements. • Clean linear lines and minimal hardware. • Contrasting woods, textures, colors and materials. • Multiple entertainment areas including fore deck cocktail lounge /sun bathing area. What products/services could you not love without when designing? The number 1 tools I couldn’t live without are simply a pencil and sheet of paper. You can substitute digital pens and paper however it all starts with an idea and a sketch. Other tools include 3D CAD software Rhino and digital rendering software KEYSHOT. With the ever increasing tight tolerances computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines are a must.

Margot 45M by Garroni Design was designed for a Western American customer. The relationship of the customer and the designer, Vittorio Garroni, goes back about half a century when they sailed together, on a much smaller boat. MARGOT is a modern ocean range motorsailing yacht designed for demanding customers, capable to sail in all conditions, from tropical to extreme seas, for discovery and exploration voyages. High capacity fuel tanks and ability to run under sails make her truly independent, allowing to easily cross Oceans. The elegant lines of the wide hull, conceived by the deeply experienced Italian GARRONI DESIGN team, gives the interiors feeling of spaciousness and high standing comfort. MARGOT has been built by an experienced Polish shipyard, Conrad Yachts, renowned for modern and classical super-yacht construction.
“ The yacht is outfitted with an advanced sail management system based on a five spreader custom carbon mast and Park Avenue boom with mainsail furler, assisted by hydraulic captive reel winches, allowing short handed control of all sails. ”
The hull and deck are of high-strength welded steel for the maximum resistance in case of collision, for the operational reliability, and ease of maintenance and repair even in difficult conditions. The hull is partitioned by 9 structural stiffened bulkheads, 2 of them enclosing the mast bottom; 7 of those bulkheads being watertight and generating 8 watertight compartments, each connected with remote controlled watertight doors. Welded aluminium is used for superstructures and flying bridge deck to reduce weights in sheltered areas. The sophisticated shape of the edge sheer line, underlined by the wide and full length hull windows emphasizes power and elegance of the yacht offering, from the interiors, spectacular views of the sea and surroundings. The full glazed superstructures accommodates the pilot house and the daytime living areas. The yacht is outfitted with an advanced sail management system based on a five spreader custom carbon mast and Park Avenue boom with mainsail furler, assisted by hydraulic captive reel winches, allowing short handed control of all sails. Passenger and crew interior accommodations are located in two superimposed decks plus an open flying bridge deck. The flying bridge can be covered by a foldable bimini and accommodates port

and starboard side helms, lounges, day bar, sunbathing areas and a small Jacuzzi pool. The main deck outside lounge and dining area is located aft of the main lounge; in the bow area a wide seawater pool has side extendable terraces with foldable ladders to the sea and the second tender garage. The lower deck has an aft sea level foldable terrace for beaching and tenders boarding. The connected beach lounge accommodates a bar, gymnasium and the main tender garage. Crew accommodations include a small lounge plus four cabins for 7 plus Captain. Common day areas floorings are in Oak (durmast) and Wengé wide long stripes parquets, passengers night areas are in high quality woven carpets and ensuite bathrooms are laminated by thin layers of decorative stones coupled with honeycomb stiffener. Fixed and loose furniture of passengers areas are veneered with triple thickness of pickled oak open pore with limited clear lacquered zebrano inlays. Saddled leather panels inserts are used for desk pads or beauty desk lift off lids; highest quality leather and/or stainless steel are incorporated for decorative handles, knobs and cabinets hardware. The interior public areas include a wide stern saloon with bar, while a separate, elevated pilot room overlooks the cinema/ entertainment lounge and dining room area. The owner’s private apartment is on the fore part of the main deck whilst guests are hosted in the lower deck, in four en-suite cabins with queen sized berths convertible to twins. MARGOT was planned for delivery early 2016, she was to stay in the Baltic Sea for a couple of months and then sail to Los Angeles through the Northwest Passage. It is an amazing sea route starting from Newport, Rhode Island, going around Terranova, entering the Davis Strait between Canada and Greenland, then sailing in the Beaufort Sea along the northern of Alaska coast, crossing the Bering Sea and Strait, sailing into the Southern Alaska fjords and reach the western Newport, Oregon, just prior to California home land. For Family reasons the program has been one year delayed and, hopefully, the Northwest Passage will be crossed in 2017. Margot was the Winner at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016 in the category Sailing Yacht.

Left: Yacht Carbon Offset Naturally, many of those who own or enjoy a superyacht love the natural and marine environment and are passionate about having minimal impact. So, with the current focus on the response to climate change, there has never been a better time to consider greenhouse gas emissions. Yacht Carbon Offset offers a practical, effective way to counteract greenhouse gas impact whilst preserving cruising freedom. No onboard equipment is required: Yacht Carbon Offset calculates CO2 emissions based on the fuel quantity used, whether for a full season or a single trip, and for any yacht, classic or new, motor or sail. Emissions are then counteracted with equivalent greenhouse gas reductions achieved by independently verified green energy projects. The offset payment – typically less than 2 eurocents per litre of fuel - financially supports the green energy project and in exchange, the emission reductions are allocated to the yacht, with a Certificate showing exactly what’s included. Transparency is essential, so Yacht Carbon Offset has a fully-documented procedure which is regularly audited to maintain Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification. Clients can if they wish select individual projects for support, and can extend the scope of their personalised programme beyond the yacht to include associate flights, shore power, or indeed other aspects of their luxury lifestyle. Perfect for today’s more eco-aware yachting families and for high profile guests. www.yachtcarbonoffset.com

Oyster Yachts are the UK’s most successful builder of large series produced cruising yachts. The sleek and stylish new Oyster 825 Deck Saloon is an exciting addition to the range of new yachts launched by Oyster over the last two years. Available in both Deck Saloon and Raised Saloon versions through Oysters Custom and refit in Southampton, the new 825 features Oyster’s latest striking and contemporary styling, first seen with the highly successful Oyster 625. Clear deck lounging areas and larger hullports with ‘Seascape’ windows are among the features of this innovative new breed of Oyster yacht. With clean and easily driven hull lines drawn by Humphreys Yacht Design and detailed styling and engineering developed by the Oyster Design Team.
“ From every angle she is refined and elegant. Just as at home safely exploring the world’s oceans as cruising the Costa Smeralda, the Oyster 825 is designed for the owner who seeks adventure and performance but with the peace of mind of safety and every comfort to hand. ”
Developing the latest interior styling now seen on the Oyster 625, 725 and 885, and building on the engineering knowledge gained from the Oyster Group’s successful development of the Oyster Superyachts, the new Oyster 825 provides a “superyacht experience” in levels of style and comfort for the owner who still enjoys sailing the yacht themselves with family and friends, yet wants the balance of supporting their sailing with professional crew. The Oyster 825 is a powerful yacht that covers up to 250 miles per day on long passages without drawing breath. From every angle she is refined and elegant. Just as at home safely exploring the world’s oceans as cruising the Costa Smeralda, the Oyster 825 is designed for the owner who seeks adventure and performance but with the peace of mind of safety and every comfort to hand. The spacious, ergonomically planned cockpit comfortably and safely separates guests from sail handling, whilst the huge areas of flush deck, both forward and aft, provide the perfect spot for sunbathing and entertaining. The design process began as Oyster’s 825 brief was to create a worthy successor to the highly successful 82, providing elegant superyacht luxury for six guests, with suitably appointed galley and crew areas enabling a full ‘six star’ service without compromise to her performance, whether global cruising or racing, always strictly adhering to Oyster’s world renowned reputation for strength and seaworthiness whatever the conditions. Oyster Design would employ the latest 3D technologies to optimise available space within the sleek, easily driven hull, maximising the standard layout of en-suite owner and guest accommodation in three double cabins aft, whilst providing independent quarters for four professional crew to run the yacht discreetly. Abreast of the trend towards lifestyle orientated yachts, she would feature a large, full width saloon, with the feeling of light and space further enhanced by a state-of-the-art sidesliding glass companionway and Oyster’s trademark triple Seascape windows giving unique views to the horizon when seated.
56 Luxe Et Al
Seamless integration the intricate systems of a high quality modern vessel, with painstaking attention to sound mitigation and unobtrusive service access, fully ensures the owners’ enjoyment of the yacht. The owners’ brief for Maegan ,built upon Oyster’s standard 825 design, generated a global cruising yacht with unrivalled race performance and a highly specified interior befitting a true superyacht, within a highly contemporary minimalist theme. However, minimalist was not to imply any form of discomfort, so careful use of colour and fabrics would enhance the interior ambience, along with touch screen controlled lighting and air conditioning systems. The favourite aspect for the project is Maegan’s very linear interior; with joinery in horizontal grain quarter-sawn limed oak and a walnut sole throughout, it creates a spacious and welcoming yacht with a wonderfully open and airy feel, benefiting from judicious use of painted panels and careful fabric selection to add contrast and interest to a minimalist brief from a very knowledgeable and design literate client. Centred on the superb views offered by the Seascape windows, the saloon’s ‘lifestyle bias’ is further enhanced by a clever concealed galley door and sliding panel arrangement offering the opportunity to instantly switch between an informal family orientated open plan living area, and then in the evening, to a more intimate saloon isolated from the galley for comfortable and sophisticated entertaining. The Ocean Air blinds and soft furnishings bring the interior together combining the luxurious feel with the upholstery on the furniture from Passports of Southampton. As for the exterior, the LED lights from Ocean LED give Maegan a modern approach and show off the boats finest assets at night fall. CEO of Oyster Yachts, David Tydeman, said, “Maegan was built for the two shareholders behind Oyster Yachts and Mrs Marja de Pundert, wife of one of them, worked closely with our Senior Interior Designer Marcus Wright. Marja had never worked on yacht interiors before yet had a very clear focus on what she wanted. We’re delighted that her efforts are being recognised through the awards.” The designers fully believe that the design works well due to how well it demonstrates Oyster’s ability to build a lifestyle type of vessel without turning their backs on their core values and reputation of high performance seaworthy blue water sailing yachts. It shows that the company is eager to tailor the boats to the specific requirements of individuals; none of the 885s and 825s built so far are the same. Oyster Marine was founded in 1973 and has established itself as an international market leader of world-class cruising yachts. With their distinctive Deck Saloon design, Oyster Yachts are recognised throughout the sailing world for quality, comfort and performance.

“ Eight represents the balance between functionality and luxury, tradition and innovation. Its success arises from a shared passion, love, and working with people on the same wavelength. ” At the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016, the winner of the Power Yacht Refit Award was Solido Interiors with Eight. This extraordinary yacht is ideal for those who love art, adventure and conviviality, and for those who want to share experiences and feelings with family and close friends, researching and enjoying the spectacular shows offered by the free nature of the sea. It is the perfect result of the passionate work of a skilled and professional team, namely Solido Interior Design - a team of yacht designers and interiors with different talents guided by a single goal: to create a unique means by which living the passion for sea, travel, and discovery, but at the same time a place sophisticated, cozy and comfortable for the family. The strong personality of the project designed by Solido Interior Design, who oversaw the refitting from design to execution, is inspired by the owner’s specific requests; they wanted a layout that would allow them to enjoy wide and bright spaces and ensure a close connection with the external environment. The internal areas evoke a sophisticated and personalized luxury. Precious materials, such as marbles, refined woods, metals, leather twists and blackout technologies help to create a comfortable but highly functional environment. The yacht is composed by four decks and the fly, five cabins for guests, the luxury master suite, and comfortable cabins for the crew. Eight was created in 2006 thanks to the collaboration between the CRN Shipyards of Ancona and the prestigious Nuvolari Lenard International design studio, who designed the hull. Nine years later, it was subject to a total refitting, both of the internal and external layout, developed by Solido Interior Design of Rome, who brought many innovations to the design to make the yacht compliant with the owner’s taste and desires, incorporating values such as beauty, creativity, fine craftsmanship and extreme attention to detail that has always identified the ‘Italian Touch’. The refit of Eight, which is 46 metres long, was designed to meet the brief of creating a layout that would allow the enjoyment of wide and bright spaces, in order to ensure a close connection with the external environment. The owner is very clear of their requirements, with a passion for technology and innovation and a strong bond with the sea, considering it to be a boundless field of exploration but a familiar and friendly place at the same time. Spaces have an original contemporary décor, leitmotif of different areas, characterized by extremely clean and harmonious lines. The energy here is powerful and sophisticated, with a clever combination of wood and fine

leathers, glasses assembled with inner copper foils and finely processed metals and rare marbles. The deck area adjacent the main saloon provides a comfortable leisure area, boasting four dark grey sofas with red profiles and a coffee table. From here, a sliding glazed door invites guests into the comfortable main saloon. Three large sofas are placed around a large and elegant carpet and two coffee tables, where guests can comfortably socialise or unwind. A double-face 78 inch concealing TV divides the living area from the large round dining table seating up to 10 people for a more formal dining experience. The master cabin, situated on the main deck at the bow, is a masterpiece of sobriety and simplicity, reflecting the style that pervades the entire yacht. The owner’s apartment is preceded by a cosy business area, where they can work while enjoying ultimate comfort and privacy. The use of soft colours that range from hazelnut to cream in alternating in fabrics throughout the vessel provide luxurious warmth. The bathroom too features a skilful play with colours, juxtaposing warm oak wood with the dark mottled stone of the bathtub, which is complete with hydromassage and chromotherapy. The bathroom is fitted with a ‘his and hers’ double sink and a shower box. The electrical darkening glass system guarantees brightness and privacy at the same time. An elegant internal staircase with leatherlined steps leads to the lower deck, which hosts the comfortable guest area and the crew quarters. The fitness area, which was previously found to port, has been replaced by an additional cabin, joining the other 3 located on the same deck. The main changes at the stern have involved the garage, which has been widened to fit the owner’s tender, a large Castoldi 23’. Once this has been launched, the stern can be turned into a large beach club. This area also enjoyably features a shower area, with the shower head in the ceiling and the shower mat on the deck. The flooring has been replaced to ensure continuity with the warm shades of the outdoor teak. At the aft of the upper deck, a wide sky lounge is furnished with two comfortable L-shaped sofas that make this area ideal to enjoy dinner with a magnificent view over the sea, thanks to the large rectangular table seating up to 10 people. In the indoor salon, a C-shaped sofa stands opposite a concealing up-and-down 75 inch TV. The refitting in this area has involved the enlargement of the windows, allowing cascading natural light and a breathtaking view of the sea. An external staircase takes guests to the sundeck, a fabulous area where life in the
open air can be enjoyed to the fullest and featuring a round table in polished teak with eight satin teak chairs in the middle, ideally dividing this area into two separate ones. Indeed, two large sunbathing areas and two awnings with carbon poles have been positioned on the sundeck: the first is at the extreme stern and features one single rectangular sunpad in dark grey fabric with red profiles, as well as two polished teak round tables; the second area, at the bow, shows the result of a more extensive refitting – a Teuco hydromassage tub. The sunpad and the entire sundeck are protected by handrails with steel and glass uprights. On the sides of the central table, a flat screen TV, an ice-maker, a refrigerator, and a barbeque complete the furnishings. The forward structure, where navigation lights were previously installed, has been replaced with a removable carbon mast slightly closer to the stern. Everything helps to create a perfect continuity between natural and artificial, external and internal, domestic and marine dimension, in a place where the owner is left to establish his own boundaries. Eight’s interiors are characterized by chromatic, neutral, plain tones, which create the relaxing atmosphere that reigns on the decks, giving uniformity to spaces and emphasizing the search for minimalism and sophistication that led all the choices in the project implementation. Eight represents the balance between functionality and luxury, tradition and innovation. Its success arises from a shared passion, love, and working with people on the same wavelength. Every single space, furniture and accessory has been redesigned following handcrafted methods and using the finest materials in a combination of functionality, class and style. The uniqueness of the project has proved to be successful in the match between past and future. The use of natural light, wood, fine-quality leather, and other bespoke materials have transformed Eight into a truly spectacular vessel. Finally, in August 2015 this stunning yacht set sail after the prestigious launching ceremony that defined it as one of the most beautiful and precious jewels of the shipyard. The technical characteristics confirm the value of the nautical masterpiece, which stands out not only in terms of aesthetics but also from a functional, performing and safety point of view. The collaboration of CRN, Nuvolari Lenard and Solido Interior Design have created a timeless object away from passing trends and styles, where the elegance of the hull clean lines become a metaphor of a life that shuns excess and superfluous and looks for the essence: the love for sea, beauty, and family.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? Our hunger for new experiences and constant change sets new standards and challenges for interior design. In public multifunctional spaces, where functions vary according to the time of the day, for example, the design has to be strong and flexible at the same time and even adaptable to different mood changes. It is quite a challenge for a designer; you don’t get through with styling only anymore. (On the positive side there is a lot of potential, too.) In our office we have developed a special Space Alive concept to solve these new demands in the most creative and effective way. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. 1. Flexibility 2. Playfulness 3. Play of light and shadow 4. Be Eclectic: play with different styles in an elegant way 5. 3D-printing Any key trends that we should be aware of? We’ve noticed that flexibility, which has always been key issue in yacht design, is in great demand nowadays in all kinds of environments from hotel interiors to work spaces. Interiors must adapt to different needs in different times of the day and situations. The needs regarding both functions and moods vary. Our Space Alive concept will serve these needs systematically, allowing us to adjust the character and ambience of the space to the needs of different situations during the day. The concept was utilized also in the award winning Finnair’s A350 interiors. What projects are you currently working on? We are currently designing interiors of Tallink Megastar shuttle which will be introduced on Helsinki-Tallinn route in

2017. Our company was invited to bring in fresh entertainment ideas and design its restaurant and public areas. To entertain its 2800 passengers during the two hour journey we decided to design several different types of experience islands that suit the needs of different kind of customer groups and ease the navigation on board. Special attention was paid to the smooth customer flow. The lounges can be easily modified to suit the needs of the groups of different sizes. We have just completed designing Hilton Tallinn Park hotel in Tallinn which is the first foothold of the Hilton hotel chain in the Baltic countries. It’s been a huge project. The hotel building of 26,500 square metres and accommodates 220 rooms of different categories, along with 4 restaurants, a spa, gym and conference centre. Our company is responsible for the interior design of the whole building. Last year’s major project was cabin design for Finnair A350 Airbus which won at The International Yacht & Aviation Awards in the Commercial Aviation: Economy/ Business Class category. Apart from the new cabin interiors, we also designed the interiors of Finnair’s Schengen and non-Schengen lounges at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in order to give a unified Finnair customer experience. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Dream big, aim high and stick to your initial vision despite the numerous compromises that are part of the design process! The role of the designer is to make sure that the end user gets the experience she or he deserves. At the end it is worth the trouble and benefits the business of the client. A designer’s work is so diverse. How do you manage to hold down a career and a life? Family comes first but they know that design is part of my life. It is hard to imagine life without work and design challenges. I love them both.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? Successful projects like Finnair and Hilton give you so much energy and hunger for new great design challenges. We have so many ideas and are constantly looking for partners to join us for the next crazy design adventure either in the sea, air or land. The bigger the better. So, a little bit about you: The car you drive? Mini Cooper & BMW X5 Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Bora Bora, Tahiti. Our over-water bungalow was great! Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? Mandarin Oriental by Patricia Urquiola, Barcelona. The place that gives you the most energy? In July 2015 Cruisers Yachts launched their flagship Cantius 60’. The project was a partnership with Facheris Design in collaboration with De Basto Designs. The design brief for this project was to offer exceptional space, layout, comfort and performance in a design unique from previous cruisers models. The client was looking for a modern, aggressive, euro-styled look that would maintain interior spaces and ergonomics. The design allowed for large interior spaces without compromising the overall proportions of the profile. The full beam master stateroom is possibly the largest in class with a total deck space of over 244 sq. ft. (23 sq. m), and contains a king size bed, something that is not always possible in boats even of this size. The headroom is full standing height for the entirety of the cabin. Innovatively, it was not necessary to drop the deck between the stringers in order to provide this and as a result, the entire master cabin deck is on one level.
“ The Cantius 60 has no fewer than five entertaining venues including the graceful bow with reverse crescent seating, port and starboard sun loungers, and room for two tables for cocktails. ”
Below deck, the accommodation of the new Cantius 60 measures over 39’ (11.9 m) from the crash bulkhead forward to the master stateroom’s aft bulkhead, separating it from the engine room. When standing at the helm, once again full height headroom is realised and the large wind-shield and side window offer expansive visibility. The Cantius 60 has no fewer than five entertaining venues including the graceful bow with reverse crescent seating, port and starboard sun loungers, and room for two tables for cocktails. Furthermore, a large salon amidships with a large U-shaped sofa opposite that can easily seat six to eight people. This original, optimized design functions so well because it allows interior volume, space and maximum visibility while still achieving the sleek exterior lines of a modern cruiser. The design philosophy behind the Cantius 60 is to do everything with ease. Rather than pack as many features as possible into this new yacht, it has been designed to focus in gracious dimensions. The yacht is laid out and opened up to allow for ultra-comfortable living. Boarding by the stern, port and starboard steps lead into the cockpit yet still leave abundant space for the U-shaped seating across the transom. Here is the perfect spot

for outdoor dining and entertaining with a high gloss table and electrical sunshade over the area. Expanding on this space, the full glass bulkhead into the salon has a port side partition that lowers electrically to create an island kitchen effect complete with 2 bar stools. Privacy is also an important element. For private outdoor relaxation the Bow Lounge area features a wide forward facing bench seat as well as loungers with reclining back rests and a sunshade that can cover the area to add comfort. Light coloured wood flooring and trim offer easy maintenance but as the same time is warmly welcoming. Daylight simply floods into the boat, due to the design opening up the area ahead of the helm, which allows the lower level to remain bright and open. The helm appears to float within this space. Heading forward is the VIP Cabin which has a nearly full size queen berth, easily accessible from either side, with expansive glazing overhead and I the hull sides, as well a luxurious feature of a walk-in closet. The Master stateroom is full beam with a king sized bed and the cabin functions more like a private living area with mirrored bulkhead, very large windows with opening ports, generously sized ensuite head with private shower stall and the additional feature of translucent door and wall panels which allow the light to flood in. The cabin also benefits from the addition of a built-in coffee machine, refrigerator and café style seating on the starboard side. Fabrics for the interior were supplied by Ultrafabrics. Matt VanGrunsven, Director of Marketing for Cruisers Yachts International said: “The yacht’s design features sophisticated and luxurious appointments through the collaboration of our engineering staff along with Facheris Design on the exterior and De Basto Design on the interior. The result surpasses a sporty, affluent yacht.” Facheris Design, having achieved award winning success in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016, is led by President Patrizio Facheris, he said proudly of the project “A production yacht that succeeds in creating a seamless fusion of comfort and style that appeals to a large market”.

Social by Aim Altitude is a concept in which the entry space removes the ideas of galleys in this section of the aircraft and moves them to the rear of the aircraft. This then leaves a larger welcome space for a ‘super’ business class environment to occupy, promoting the idea of ‘continuous comfort’ and ‘sophistication’. This piece was conceived as a three-segment design strategy, for the Hamburg Aircraft Interiors show 2016. The concepts focused on a scaled generic wide-bodied aircraft, promoting the transferability of the schemes into today’s popular aircraft platforms, A33040 & B777 to name just two.
“ Social allowed Aim Altitude to explore how creating enlarged communal areas would benefit and enrich the business class customers’ flight experience. This informal area soon developed into a super business class zone, one that is becoming ever more popular in the commercial sector. ”
AIM Altitude’s ‘in house’ Industrial Design team wanted to illustrate how versatile and important the entrance to the aircraft can be to passengers and airlines. Reinvigorating the magic of flight, impact, cabin ambience, branding reinforcement and over all ‘wow’ factor were major considerations when creating the differing styles. AIM Altitude designs, engineers and manufactures an array of products from galleys to bespoke bars and social areas for this specific entrance area. Therefore the team conceived the range of three scenes to demonstrate their current ‘concept to completion’ thinking. This was the last scheme in the set, but demonstrated the ‘what-if’ scenario. What if…the traditional galley area and functionality was removed and replaced with a new idea of increased social interaction. How would an airline react to giving more back to the passenger rather than harbouring more precious bodies in seats? Social allowed Aim Altitude to explore how creating enlarged communal areas would benefit and enrich the business class customers’ flight experience. This informal area soon developed into a super business class zone, one that is becoming ever more popular in the commercial sector. Oversized central sofas, upholstered in the finest cream leather, draped dramatically around a blending walnut framework. The contrast between ‘hard and soft’ and ‘light and dark’ made the sculpted seats powerful visual forms. Double tonal stitching and edge piping was used subtly to detail the sofas, reinforcing their elegant craftsmanship. Contrast pillows and splashes of bright geometric colour gave the sofas the fresh burst of contemporary living that made them inviting and comfortable.
92 Luxe Et Al
The central zone features an interactive table. This could be used to see vital flight data, view a web page or simply place a drink on. USB ports, head-phone jacks and cocktail tables were all supplied to make working, relaxing or socialising with friends as comfortable as possible. This thought process was then used to style a common design theme across the outboard areas. Door 2 became home to two facing oversized single seats, the intention being that they would qualify for use as ‘Cabin Attendant Seats’; a novel idea compared to the standard unattractive CAS often seen in this area. On the opposite outboard area Aim Altitude introduced café-style tables around which people could congregate. Often stretching one’s legs on long flights is just what the passengers want; standing or leaning is a very popular activity whilst flying, so this area caters for that. Dramatic lighting is a key feature to change the dynamics of the cabin. The team looked into various effects but a successful one was edge lighting. The strip-lighting effect allowed them to frame the blending shapes, emphasising the dramatic forms that had been created through the seat transitions. A clean, crisp white LED was used to promote the idea of modern freshness and refinement. The schemes were designed and modelled to be used directly in an Virtual Reality Environment. For the show the public were asked to step into the designers’ heads and explore these concepts, not only in 2D but in 3D. The users were given the experience to choose a scheme and then submerge themselves in an inflight scenario. This was the best way to convert the design intent into a real-life situation without actually leaving the ground. Through allowing the designs to infuse with the virtual cabin, AIM can portray a ‘finished’ product impression, months or often years before the physical plane could see service. This technique is now being developed and used further and will become a common phase of the project milestones. Social and the other schemes will be used as a VR demonstration experience within AIM Altitude’s new facility in Bournemouth, Dorset UK, and is the winner of the Concept Cabin Award in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2016.
5 Minutes with Tim Fagan Company Position within company Website What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? I think the overall trend in luxury design is in the art of creating complete and unique experiences, rather than simply designing products. Understanding and anticipating user needs through their interaction with the aircraft is critical in creating the perfect cabin experience. From correct ergonomics, aesthetic beauty, fit and finish, and attention to small almost-hidden details that might be discovered only by the client - these are increasingly significant considerations that can be a competitive advantage in the market. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond. A strong theme in business aircraft is the increasing demand for technology – not tech ‘gadgets’, but technology that seamlessly supports the passengers in their daily tasks. For example, Bombardier is the first OEM to offer worldwide high speed Internet connectivity to match the worldwide range of our Global aircraft. The Bombardier WAVE system allows passengers to stream content, stay connected, speak with friends and loved ones - exactly as if they were at home or in the office. We feel this is an example of the right type of tech implementation: quietly embedded capability that lets you go about your lifestyle without compromise. Another key element is attention to detail. We are often inspired by other luxury segments - such as fashion, automotive design, and architecture - that help us find opportunities to provide a deeper and richer experience. For example, designing the sound and feeling when you close a car door can deliver a much more satisfying experience than simply the visual beauty of the vehicle. Luxury auto makers have done this for years and we have employed these principles with the Challenger 650 aircraft and the Global 7000 aircraft. There is so much opportunity for sound and tactile feedback to reinforce the luxury visual experience on our products and create a more emotional connection between aircraft and passenger. The overall theme for our design team is delivering uncompromised experiences. This means starting from a vision of how the product should work, how it makes the user feel, what experience it should deliver - then working backwards to find the technical solutions and details that will deliver that experience. On the Global 7000 aircraft for example, we carefully researched and tested through prototypes the best dining experiences, the perfect sleeping environment, the most comfortable seating geometry. Maintaining this vision sets the

requirements, both functional and visual, for the design, engineering and fabrication of the aircraft. What projects are you currently working on? I am currently working on the development of our Global 7000 aircraft. The Global 7000 is a game-changing aircraft that will define a whole new category for business jets. The Global 7000 is the first and only purposebuilt four-zone aircraft in the world, and it will deliver unmatched performance, flexibility, and comfort. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? For successful aircraft interior design, the key is to understand our customers as much as possible: their tastes, how they intend to use the aircraft, the important city pairs they will be travelling between, their typical travel schedule, the passengers typically aboard and the in-flight activities (the mix of working, resting, family, entertaining). Is it a corporate aircraft, a private owner, or a fleet or charter operator? As transportation designers, our task is to gather these important points - connect the dots and rationalize them into a unified design proposal that fits perfectly our customers’ functional requirements. Like a well-tailored suit: beautiful, functional, and conveying the owner’s sense of personal style. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? The key to easily achieving the right balance in my opinion is to really enjoy your work! As a designer I am motivated by interesting projects, designing around technical constraints, the need to solve problems while delivering an exceptional user experience. If you love your work, then balancing one’s professional and personal life becomes easy to manage! How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? These are significant awards in our industry that continue to grow in importance. While many of the technical challenges are different between jets and yachts, the design principles are similar - as is the expectation of excellence from our customers, who are the most discerning in the world. Luxury transportation is a very specific design discipline and awards like this allow us to acknowledge excellence in our design community, and a chance to be inspired and keep current on the latest trends, materials, technologies, designs and ground breaking projects.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? The Challenger 650 aircraft has just successfully entered into service. Obviously the key priority in product development this year in Bombardier Business Aircraft will be to continue the Global 7000’s development towards first flight, and in parallel to continue to meet the customers of the first production aircraft for completion specification. The design concept is complete, and the current phase is as an Industrial Design team is working with engineering, fabrication, and installation teams all the way through to the delivered product, to make sure that we preserve and consider the customer experience in each small detail. Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself... Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Obviously I’m not the only one who feels this way, but I absolutely love visiting London. It is such an incredible combination of modern and historic, and a visually fascinating city. A day spent walking around London allows you to eat good food, feed your art and design craving, and refill your reservoir of inspiration. There is such a sense of ambition and striving in the city. Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? Most of my most memorable nights out have been with friends at a pub. A good pub or tavern will let you feel completely welcome and at home, and can be found in most cities in the world! I love Le Germain hotel, located in the lower Old Town of Québec City. The place that gives you the most energy? I get energized when visiting museums and art galleries - in these spaces and looking at the diversity of the ideas, you can sense that human creativity and intellect is really limitless. And the place that enables you to totally relax? I look forward to summer at the cottage and camping in Ontario. A quiet lake, canoeing, fishing, friends and family, a fire at night. Anything else interesting? I was a co-designer of the Olympic Torch for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. Another inspiring Bombardier project I had the chance to be a part of!

“ The builder and the designer have incorporated the classic style of a gentleman’s motoryacht into the strong and solid lines of a contemporary luxury yacht, capable of cruising absolutely anywhere to the delight of her guests. ”
MCA compliant, RINA classified motoryacht Olde Salt has a steel hull with a 7M beam. She was delivered within 15 months, which was a great success for the boatyard. With the advantage of having all workshops inhouse such as carpentry, mechanics, paint, electric and a dedicated mock up area for the yacht interiors Aegean Yachts were able to reduce the construction period by at least 5 months. All the interiors of Olde Salt were manufactured and assembled at this mock-up area while the hot works and steel construction were ongoing on the yacht. Each interior section was assembled on the yacht after completion of the hotworks. The choice of materials was driven by the owner’s desire to totally relax on board in natural, low-key ambiance with a hint of tradition. Her elegant interior features ivory toned super glossy wooden panels, oak floorings, fine Italian soft furnishings in white and large windows, allowing ample natural light throughout the yacht. Particular attention was paid to the upholstery detailing and textiles. A combination of linen, alcantara and leather was used throughout the yacht. Two generous outdecks host multiple relaxation, sun lounging and al-fresco dining areas for family and friends. The variety of exterior areas and seating corners become social magnets for people to break off into smaller groups as desired. Two large dining tables placed on the main and upper decks offer spectacular views during an alfresco meal. Both tables can seat
