Awards season is almost upon us at design et al and with it the excitement of the summer ahead. In 2103, The International Design & Architecture Awards grew at an unprecedented rate, meaning that for 2014 we had to divide categories and create an Awards specifically for International Hotels & Property. So, with voting opening midMay and remaining open until 13 June, this is your chance to take a peek into some of the world’s most glamorous and inspiring hotel design schemes and, more than that, actually have your say - decide who you would like to win a category and cast your vote. From this point we will move to The International Design & Architecture Awards – certainly one of the most significant events in the design calendar these days. Although applications do not open officially until July, categories
were closing as early as January this year, simply due to the volume of applications and level of applicant. This is truly the most exciting Awards I have been involved in; the size and scope of the event today and its rapid growth have been incredible. The work of the designers and architects remains, once again, inspirational. I am looking forward to sharing the projects with you throughout the remainder of 2014 and into 2015, but again the winners remain totally in your hands. Voting opens in August 2014, we will of course let you know more details closer to the time. So, talking of inspirational projects, this month we have selected schemes that look at and symbolise design at its best from a range of perspectives from the traditional manor house, to a classic London townhouse, a more contemporary apartment and the technological splendour of the home cinema. Best, Joanne

Shortlisting Luxury Categories: Senosiain Architects, Amoeba House Senosiain Architects have been shortlisted for the ID&A Awards 2014, with their project Amoeba House entering the Architectural Glasshouse over £150,000 category. Overall, this is a prime example of the new era of an Organic House with a great view to a golf course. The project is located within a private dwelling complex, with a golf course, surrounded by the lush vegetation of the area and located at just 120 kilometres away from the city of San Paulo. The land is privileged, since it faces to the fairway and has the ideal orientation to the north. Moreover, a requirement of this site is that all buildings should be located as ‘islands’ at the centre of a chosen piece of land and there are no fences allowed in their adjacencies. www.arquitecturaorganica.com 14 Design Et Al

Staffan Tollgard Design Group are shortlisted for the ID&A Awards 2014 Staffan Tollgard Design Group have been shortlisted for the Residential £1 – £2.5 Million (Project Value) Award in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. The project is a dramatic modernisation of a handsome family home, together with David Gibson Architects, has resulted in open-plan and intersecting living spaces that hinge on the striking sculptural staircase. Repeated architectural and decorative refrains of glass, natural and stained wood, large format ceramics, together with contemporary lighting features create a bold and inviting home. With a young family (with twins on the way), the clients wanted the interiors to reflect their fun family life and their love of design. “We were engaged to provide a full interior design specification for this renovation of an existing family home. We began work a year ago with the project in fully-fledged construction: a challenging time-line for all parties concerned. With the architectural design of the house under control with David Gibson Architects, the clients wanted a full
interior design specification comprising materials, finishes, bathrooms, lighting, joinery and all furniture and soft finishings” explains Staffan Tollgard, Design Director, Staffan Tollgard Design Group. The clients wanted to make the most of the space that the new house would afford them: a huge open plan living area would be used for entertaining and movie nights with the kids; a family kitchen would see regular gatherings of 10 and more. The dining room needed to seat as many as possible and be linked with the living room beyond. Taking inspiration from the architect’s creation of double-height spaces in the entrance area the designers created a lighting design with Moooi’s Raimond pendants taking centre stage. Visible from the first and ground floors they are functional, modern sculptures: sleek and minimal, adding to the ‘red thread’ of linear geometry that runs through the house. The bespoke joinery was one of the most successful aspects of the project. Inspired by the clean geometry of the staircase we designed joinery for every room in the property, including the dining room, the client’s favourite room. www.tollgard.co.uk
Seqoya are shortlisted for the Residential £2.5 – £5 Million Plus (Project Value) Award London based Seqoya have been shortlisted for the Residential £2.5 - £5 Million Plus (Project Value) Award in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Hyperion is a luxury duplex penthouse totaling 3,400 sqft on the roof of an existing building in St John’s Wood. Hyperion’s design was built on the principle that nothing within the penthouse should ultimately detract from the breathtaking views and the warm luxurious interiors should work to create a relaxing home that’s a joy to live in. To enhance the open & liberating penthouse feeling we maximised the amount of glazing used. Utilising floor to ceiling glazing enhanced this feeling and also emphasised the great 2.9m ceiling heights. We wanted the core of the apartment to be stunning, warm, spacious and light. The double storey ebony Macassar and bevelled mirror wall cladding produced a dramatic effect around the perla beige marble-clad elliptical staircase. Ebony Macassar wall cladding was carried through to the drawing room and a dark grey stained sycamore used for the joinery in the dining room. www.seqoya.co.uk

Further Shortlist Success for Foster Lomas in The ID&A 2014 City Space Award design et al are delighted to announce the further shortlist success for Foster Lomas in the City Space Award with the Riverside Penthouse in London. This newly refurbished penthouse is situated on London’s South Bank and boasts panoramic views over the river. The design of this magnificent penthouse
drew inspiration from the client’s travels to the South of France and Morocco and his love of the Art Deco period. These memories and interests helped Foster Lomas to develop a concept for the whole apartment. These influences manifest themselves as subtle echoes throughout the entire apartment. The existing riverside penthouse suffered from a maze of corridors, poor daylight penetration and inefficient use of the available space. By re-planning and completely removing the corridor spaces this has maximised the usable space within the apartment. The
curved geometry of the building has also been embraced to create a harmonious series of flowing spaces. A key feature of the project is the dramatic hanging pod that replaces the original mezzanine. The design of the pod was inspired by 1930’s motorboats, their finely crafted woodwork and flowing elegant forms. This private relaxation space is suspended on just 12 brass tension cables. From the pod you can sit back an enjoy the elevated riverside view towards Chelsea. www.fosterlomas.com Design Et Al 17

This London Duplex Show apartment is situated at The Lancasters with unrivaled views across London’s famous Hyde Park. The world-renowned design studio, Intarya exclusively styled the luxury interior, with a wide appeal for future sale. The property was a short listed project for Intarya at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013.
“ The contemporary influences outweigh the traditional touches to give a fresh, unfussy look with personality and glamour, the perfect balance of old and new. ”
London-based Intarya has been at the forefront of the design industry since 1994, creating spectacular and acclaimed interiors for some of the most discerning and design-aware clients. As an international company, their projects have received high critical acclaim, with projects including town houses, chalets, period buildings and superyachts. Every detail is researched, considered, tailor-made and handcrafted, unlocking the potential and adding value. With a versatile approach, Intarya stresses the need to understand clients to deliver maximum satisfaction. Managing Director, Daniel Kostiuc added: “We are known for truly understanding our clients’ needs, helping them create homes that are beautiful, practical and can be enjoyed for many years. This means that we have a very versatile aesthetic, and are just as comfortable designing a listed house as an uber-cool penthouse. The common thread in all of our designs is our focus on creating sophisticated, timeless interiors with quality as the watchword.” The brief for Intarya was to create a design aesthetic which was sympathetic to the period of the property without succumbing entirely to its Georgian roots, to introduce contemporary, clean lines and statement pieces of art and furniture. It was of utmost important to maximise distinctive architectural details such as the impressive double height ceiling of the Reception Room. With floor to ceiling joinery either side of the fireplace distinctive architectural elements are resurrected. The use of grey stained sycamore in a high gloss finish was chosen specifically to work with the antique mirroring and it adds an important feeling of contemporary glamour. The Duplex features bespoke furniture pieces and accessories from Birgit Israel as well as a large canvas in the Reception by British artist, Jessica Zoob. The upholstered bedstead in the Master Bedroom is from Collection Pierre and Beaumont & Fletcher supplied the room’s statement gilt mirrors. A sculptural vine leaf wall light in the dining area is a beautiful feature that provides the main focus of the room. In a mixture of white and gold metal, its intricate leaves organically grow up the mirrored walling and across the ceiling to create an intimate and romantic area for entertaining. Comfortable curved back chairs in leather with nickel leg
cap details complete the look and perfectly complement the contemporary sculptural brass pedestal of the dining table. Daniel Kostiuc believes the combination of classical and modern themes, as prominently featured in the Master Bedroom, allows the design to work so well. He added: “The interplay of the contemporary and the traditional is a theme that flows through the apartment and it is their subtle balance that makes the design work so well. This is best showcased in the Master Bedroom. On a peaceful backdrop of soft green linen walls, the clean lines of the lacquered and mirrored bedside tables contrast with statement over scaled Rococo mirrors hung above, making their presence truly stand out. Similarly, the sleek bed is tightly upholstered in a crisp ivory fabric, in keeping with the modern dressing table, both of which contrast with a traditional deep buttoned and daintily carved demi-lune stool at the foot of the bed.” Classical themes were an important aspect of this London Duplex, however throughout the apartment an eclectic look was achieved. The contemporary influences outweigh the traditional touches to give a fresh, unfussy look with personality and glamour, the perfect balance of old and new. The International Design & Architecture Awards are an important event for Daniel Kostiuc, stating: “It is important to recognise and reward excellent standards within our industry. It is a great honour to be nominated by an International and well acclaimed awards body.” Speaking about his own inspirations and design style Kostiuc said: I am really inspired by fashion, art and travel. Having a very international portfolio of clients also means that I am exposed to many cultures, their various customs and requirements. This is really inspiring to me, and definitely has an impact on my designs. Intarya are currently working on apartments in Belgravia and Knightsbridge as well as a townhouse by Hyde Park. The Londonbased company have a prosperous year lined up for 2014 with the release of a new furniture line and expanding their markets in South America, noticeably Brazil. Kostiuc added: “We have a number of projects that I am extremely excited about that will be completed in 2014. Our up-coming furniture line, due for release at the end of the year, is also very exciting and a huge step for Intarya. Another very exciting prospect is our branching out into the South American market through our presence in Brazil.” As for design trends in 2014 and beyond, Intarya are predicting the return of bold patterns and colours as well as strong character in design.

The refurbishment of this Grade1-listed Manor House in Oxfordshire was completed in the summer of 2012 and was carried out by London-based interior designer, Janine Stone. The property has been sympathetically restored throughout with several state of the art additions to the existing home, blending seamlessly into the overall scheme. Originally owned by New College Oxford, this 12th Century Manor House had been extended through the centuries up to the1930’s. The Manor House gained superb recognition when it was announced as a short listed project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013 in the Residential £5 million Plus category.
“ The project flows elegantly marrying the historic parts of the house with the contemporary elements. ”
Founded in 1987, Janine Stone has created distinctive homes around the world and employs over 40 full-time professionals across architecture, interior design, build & construction management. Janine Stone has a trademark design philosophy, mixing modern with classic for a truly exquisite effect: “Elegantly crafted spaces in which to relax and live comfortably. The combination of contemporary and classic styles working in harmony to deliver an exciting and engaging aesthetic. I relish being able to transform the ordinary into something quite beautiful. Visualising the space and then imagining how it can be realised, achieving this is both satisfying and rewarding.” The brief for this stunning property was to create a new design to reinvigorate and transform the main family home whilst accommodating the very special elements of the property including a13th Century undercroft and magnificent dining hall. The scope of the project was comprehensive and involved the entire property including the outbuildings. The design has an excellent balance of retaining the historic heritage whilst incorporating cutting edge technologies. With contemporary these elements, it is still sympathetic to the original home, which blends into the fabric of this elegant country house. The contemporary classic decorative treatments given to the master suite, drawing room and bathrooms allows it to be interpreted in their individual historic attributes in a thoroughly modern way.
This Oxfordshire Manor House has an elegant symphony of design and build, working in harmony to deliver an exquisite restoration of a beautiful honey stone manor house set within a bucolic landscape. The project flows elegantly marrying the historic parts of the house with the contemporary elements and significantly improves the use of the space whilst respecting the history of the house. This was achieved by working closely with the local authority’s lead conservation officer and English Heritage to ensure a smooth transition throughout the duration of the project. Janine Stone has been able to recreate and restore this home into a sophisticated property, which is fit for the 21st Century and will endure for the future. Preferring a classical approach to design, Janine Stone also states that listening to clients is key for a timeless design: “I have a preferred style which I call contemporary classic; it’s all about living well and living comfortably in some style. But I passionately believe it is key to listen to your client and really understand how they want to live the space. Their reception to your design is paramount and successful projects make the experience so enjoyable and rewarding.” Speaking about places of inspiration for outstanding design she said: “Marrakech and Tangier for their sheer exuberance of colour and intricately designed and patterned ceramics, mosaics and tiles. Paris and London for some of the very best period furniture and key decorative pieces. Rome and Florence for their cultural riches and extraordinary architecture.” Janine stone is also fascinated by the creative history of 16th Century Florence, The Renaissance, The Medici and the world famous legacy of Michelangelo. Stone also lists the Art Deco period as one of the most creative times in modern history: “The 1920’s – 1930’s Art Deco period was an elegant era combining style, sophistication and craftsmanship with a dash of fun and verve.” The design philosophy of Janine Stone is clearly evident in this Grade I listed Manor House, combining elegant classic with state of the art technology. As a strong contender at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013, the design industry is eagerly anticipating future projects by Janine Stone.

Home Cinema Technology This year’s International Design & Architecture Awards will feature a broad range of home cinemas; here we take a closer look at 2 of them.
The Wave Cinema by The Big Picture Having designed and implemented a number of reference level cinemas we wanted to take this installation to a whole new level looking at dozens of small improvements that would add up to a huge difference overall. Wherever possible there were to be no compromises. Everything was drawn up in detail to avoid mistakes by any trades involved. The Big Picture were presented with the shell of the room with raised seating platform and rack alcove along with air-con system.
We proposed a fully discrete speaker system utilising acoustically translucent screen and stretched-fabric walls. This was to be designed around family of three, with room for friends to join occasionally. The client was new to home cinema. He was undertaking a large, new build, ‘home for life’ project and as such was kitting it out with all 21st century mod-cons. He had been greatly impressed by The Big Picture’s passion for perfection especially in cinema design and as such gave us Carte-Blanche, putting everything in our hands with this
cinema design. He admitted to having struggled to think of a scheme for décor, though expressed a preference to having the very impressive kit on show. Although initial suggested budget was close to £50,000; a little down the line regarding sound, vision and 3D he expressed a desire to get exactly what he had seen and heard during our demonstrations. A key aspect to this project is its staggering performance, with faultless sound reproduction due to the detailed yet hidden technicalities.

Every aspect of the design is there to enhance video and sound performance and yet the room is simple and elegant – an incredibly relaxing, cosseting and enjoyable environment to be in. Incredible detailed and pain-staking technical design went into the project that makes it stand head and shoulders above most high end cinema design. www.getthebigpicture.co.uk

Five-time winners at the International Design & Architecture Awards, London-based International practice, Casa Forma, pride themselves on tailoring each of their designs to suit each client’s personal taste. The team develop a fully bespoke design strategy which defines the overall look and feel of the space and make sure that the layout works for the client’s lifestyle and maximizes the functionality of the space. “Casa Forma as a company doesn’t have a particular design style or formula”, comments Faiza Seth, Casa Forma’s Founder and CEO. “We focus our designs to suit the needs of each of our clients. Therefore, we offer truly bespoke design tailored to our clients’ lifestyle, personal style, and preferences.”
“ The use of subdued lighting creates a relaxing ambiance. The result is a room that seems to shine in its own light, becoming an icon of studied refinement. ”
The Casa Forma team has a range of skills including interior design, architecture, interior architecture, and furniture design. They take the time to understand the life that fills our environment – what matters to you, your family, their routines – then they shape structures and introduce design details that make living easier, and more enjoyable. Underpinning the decorative aspects of interior design is their expert understanding of the structure of your property. At the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013, Casa Forma’s ‘Canary Wharf’ project reached the shortlist for the ‘Bathroom’ Award. This incredibly glamorous powder room can be found in London’s exclusive Pan Peninsula Residences. Canary Wharf’s interior design scheme demonstrates Casa Forma’s versatility when designing a space to a client’s brief. The project blurs traditional boundaries between living and entertainment spaces. A key part of the entire residence, the Powder Room fuses new technology with natural materials. Manipulated stone slabs with routed indentations have been individually gilded and lit to create a fantastic pattern. The finished space portrays a unique yet sophisticated look. Considering the unusual brief from the client, Casa Forma’s characteristically creative design scheme is a treat for all the
senses. The epitome of both luxury and fun was created, making this apartment a stunning space for entertaining. A strong bold palette was introduced into this private space, using dark colours to create a dramatic club style mood, whilst still having a simplicity to retain sophistication and elegance. Working closely with one of the team’s highly specialised wall-finishes suppliers, bespoke marble cladding covers the walls to set off the piano finish vanity unit. This luxury finish adds richness and texture to give character to the space. The chromatic combination is quite impressive: the Pierre Bleue marble, with its typical dark blue-grey colour, creates a strong contrast with the golden pattern and accessories. Each of the circular indentations on the stone was individually gilded with some being back-lit, which works with the mirrors reflecting the fantastic pattern. In Casa Forma’s view, light is an important design element. The use of subdued lighting creates a relaxing ambiance. Steelman Partners Shortlisted for the Hotel Design Award – Asia-Pacific
Shortlisted: 1.61 London in the £5 Million+ (Property Value) Award
to incorporate and enhance these areas by returning to what made these pieces wonderful in their time and interpreting them in a modern way.
design et al are delighted to announce that 1.61 London have been shortlisted in the ID&A £5Million+ (Property Value) award.
One such example was the main reception room wall. This was designed to have back lit onyx vertical sections, sitting either side of a triplet of antique mirrors, with works of art hanging from them. This area acted as the perfect juxtaposition between ancient pieces of art, beautiful in their own right, and modern design. Thus bridging two worlds with two time differences and forging them together in this new modern, harmonised design fusion.
1.61 London, encompasses what it does in its very name and insigne. It stands for creating perfect aesthetic beauty in interior design across some of the best spaces in London. This is achieved through meticulous care and detail, making design not just an art, but also a science. The design brief was to turn what used to be an ordinary, modern, corner house on a quiet mews, to a beautifully designed, and detailed home that was moulded on their company’s notion. Each area was thought through and perfected individually, so that when each section was put together, it not only resonated in its own beauty, but created, as a whole, a harmonious, flowing design throughout. Added into this was the client’s passion for collecting antiques, art, wine and sculpture. The design needed
The theme formed allowed the designers to incorporate all these beautiful existing pieces with the design ebbing and flowing with impact and resonance where needed. This gave the client’s collection items a perfect platform to sing from where needed, but where lacking, the design to step up and influence the aesthetics. www.161london.com

Shortlisted: Neoklasika with a Moroccan Inspired Home Neoklasika have been shortlisted for the Living Space – Europe Award in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Neoklasika design team has created a holiday apartment in the popular Baltic resort city, Jurmala for a family from Moscow. The design brief for the apartment was to create a Moroccan inspired environment that would be filled with a carefree relaxing ambiance. The 152m2 apartment situated on the top floor of the newly built development is supplemented with a 176m2 roof terrace. Comfortable sitting areas, flowing soft draperies and cushions in vivid colours dominate in the interior to create a refined interior. The colour palette of the apartment was inspired by the sand of
the seashore and complemented by red and brown nuances. Outstanding variety of decorative painting techniques for the walls required a masterful and time consuming work by the artists. The interior is enhanced by Arabic ornaments on the walls and a vibrant stained glass window in the living room. The ambient lighting, deluxe fabrics and natural materials create a cosy oasis. It invites to enjoy a laid-back holiday atmosphere with family and friends after the intensity of the everyday life in one of the world’s megalopolis. Designing the apartment with a reference to Moroccan theme lies in the owners’ passion for Marrakesh that started after visiting this city. The interior was designed to create a harmony between the elements of Moroccan culture and regional colour palettes and design principles. www.neoklasika.lv

With some of the wealthiest districts in the world, central London is a highly exclusive place to live. Located in the exclusive area of Belgravia in the Royal Borough of Chelsea & Kensington, this property is interior design at its finest. Styled exclusively by Lawson Robb, this was the second project for this client, which they wanted to create as a principle home. As a shortlisted project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013, Lawson Robb have received international recognition for this beautiful central London house.
“ The design is elegant, timeless and detailed and reflects the requirements of modern day living. ”
Lawson Robb specialise in the creation and production of unique and timeless design solutions for the high-end residential market. Established in 2003, the London-based company provide a comprehensive design service with the ability to offer solutions for all elements of the design process, delivered to an exceptional standard. With both inhouse architecture and interior design capabilities, this allows for an understanding of any project no matter what stage of design development. Lawson Robb tailors to the specific lifestyle requirements of each client or developer’s target market. Creative Director & Co-Owner, Alix Lawson says most clients are just seeking a home, something that is beautiful, practical and enduring: “Design should have longevity and not just follow trends. We like to mix classical, interesting and antique pieces with more contemporary pieces to create interiors that are timeless.” For this Belgravia property the client requested a natural palette, with a sharp focus on comfort and living spaces suited both to quiet evenings and formal entertainment. A radical design approach created a “wellness” space with sauna, steam and gym on the top floor. Alix Lawson believes the company’s ability to understand client’s needs allows the design of this property to work so well: “The design is light and uncluttered with attention to detail. As a company we work closely with the ultra high net worth market so we have an in-depth understanding of their aspirations, cultures, lifestyle and level of detail and quality expected. The design is elegant, timeless and detailed and reflects the requirements of modern day living. The design works in harmony with the existing architecture of the building.” The client loves the classic modern style and mixing interesting finishes and fabrics created a perfect balance. With a true admiration for chocolates creams, tobacco, taupe, the interior design needed to compliment his artwork. As a new build property, it features a classical exterior
and stands as though it has been there for more than 200 years. The existing interior is contemporary and features a classic and modern design that works sympathetically with the existing finishes and layouts. On the third floor two bedrooms and a bathroom were transformed into a wellness/ spa area with a crisp modern and minimalist approach. Steam room, sauna and shower are enclosed and separated with glazed panels and positioned against a hand chiseled stone feature wall. A WC is concealed behind a mirror wall to create space and light. The space is complimented with techno gym equipment and a comfortable day bed. The sliding/folding doors provide a seamless transition to the external terrace, which includes a fireplace. This exclusive property in Belgravia provides an insight into the innovative styling of the Lawson Robb trademark. The design adheres to the personal tastes of the client and is a perfect representation of a property with a classical and modern aura. Alix Lawson stressed the significance of International Design & Architecture Awards saying that the event provides recognition from the industry as well as clients: “The International Design & Architecture Awards give credibility, not just within your industry, but also with clients. It is a huge source of pride, knowing that peers within your own industry feel your work deserves praise and recognition. It is extremely important to be recognised by your peers for your contribution to the design industry.” Speaking about her own philosophy and where her design inspiration comes from, Lawson believes in maximising space with clean lines and natural light – aspects clearly visible in the Belgravia project. She added: “Growing up in Australia really influenced how I view space and connect inside spaces with the outside. Understanding the aspect of properties and working with natural light is key to good design. The team at Lawson Robb are inspired by everything from lifestyle, travel, fashion, culture and nature and constantly keeping our eyes open. We have an international office and also draw on our diverse backgrounds for inspiration.” Lawson Robb are currently working on several projects in the United Kingdom but more recently have been approached to instigate their design philosophy in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the United States. Lawson added: “We are always up for a challenge and pushing the boundaries. It’s been an exciting 10 years and we are looking forward to the next chapter.”

MAIN IMAGE: Chalet Kitchen by LINLEY For this project, LINLEY were asked to provide a kitchen in a private client’s chalet in the Austrian Tyrol. The client had worked with LINLEY in the past and knew that the company had recently diversified into Fitted Cabinetry incorporating Kitchens, Bedrooms, Media Rooms and Wine Rooms. Their brief was to fuse LINLEY’s quality cabinet-making with a contemporary kitchen design in order to complement the use of indigenous materials which characterise the interior of the chalet. Although a new-build, the exterior was designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding architecture and landscape. A key instruction from the client was to incorporate reclaimed Austrian Stone Hearted Spruce which is used as a defining accent in the rest of the chalet. Once selected, the timber was shipped back to the UK to the LINLEY workshop to the excitement of their cabinet makers who have never had to work with timber
quite this ‘characterful’. The natural peculiarities of the material required incredibly careful selection and preparation. In collaboration with the client, it was reworked into this unique design before sending it back to Austria to be installed on site where it was then oil-finished with the grain enhanced by a secret blanching agent that the local joiners shared with the LINLEY team. Locally supplied granite floors and Mystic Grey satino finished granite worktops add a cool contrast to the timber whilst beaten copper splashbacks and glass and steel appliances brings razor-sharp, cool character to the space. Of-the-moment appliances are housed neatly within the units to allow for both elegant and sometimes robust entertaining. www.davidlinley.com

Private Residence by Brayer Design The brief was to create a contemporary kitchen design that incorporates a dining area and separate relaxing area. The house is traditional with exposed wooden beams and lead light windows. The room doesn’t benefit from lots of natural light so it was important to keep the design as bright as possible. There are 3 internal doors, a separate opening with a staircase, two windows and French doors leading to a courtyard that had to be incorporated whilst maintaining clean, unfussy lines. Any materials used within the design had to sit comfortably with the existing windows and architecture of the
house. The clients are a young family of six so it was important to create areas for cooking, eating and relaxing with many people moving around the space. The eating area is used every day by the whole family so it was important to make it comfortable, convivial and separate from the main cooking area. Because of small children, chairs were preferable to stools for the dining area. The key aspect of the project was the juxtaposition of a minimal design with clean lines that sits amongst a traditional house with lead lights windows. www.brayerdesign.co.uk

Mosfilmovskaya St by Oleg Klodt The brief was to lay the apartment out into three areas including a large open-plan space (lounge, dining room, and kitchen). The designers were also asked to provide storage space and work these organically into the floor plan of a fairly small apartment. The owners wanted a calm and classic interior. The most challenging aspect in creating the large open-plan space was laying out the kitchen. The design team had to combine the living room, dining
room and kitchen so that the overall resulting space didn’t seem clogged with interior items. They went for an overtly neutral approach for the kitchen – a simple white facade, without any handles, with the functional area of the kitchen tucked away in a kitchen island. All the technical features of the kitchen slot away – even the kitchen tap can fold out of sight, and the extractor hood is built into a stone portal. The stonework on the kitchen surround is made like an elegant panneau – the only decorative element in this part of the apartment. olegklodt.com/en

RIGHT: Foscote Manor by Sims Hilditch Foscote Manor is a stunning Grade II Listed Jacobean Estate in Buckinghamshire, surrounded by idyllic parkland. The designers were tasked with taking a dark, austere property full of orange oak panelling, 80’s paint and wall finishes and an array of ugly interior features and transforming it into a light and airy, elegant country home. Up to the minute home technology, power showers, a beautiful new kitchen and plenty of room for the clients 8 children to play were all high on the list of priorities. The house was in need of complete modernisation and the designers aim was to preserve the patina of the past, whilst seamlessly mixing in a modern aesthetic to create a more comfortable and elegant family home. As with all of their heritage projects Sims Hilditch wanted to celebrate the historic interior features of the property whilst carefully and respectfully updating the elements that were tired or outdated. www.simshilditch.com

Anna Casa Interiors is the ultimate design destination for the most luxurious interiors brands from around the world. The culmination of the intuitive creative vision of owner and director Anna Dodonova, Anna Casa Interiors caters to London and Europe’s most discerning clientele, offering a wide range of stunning furniture, lighting and accessories alongside Anna’s personal interior design service to help you truly transform every room of your home. Competing in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013, Anna Casa Interiors’ Knightsbridge Apartment reached the shortlist for the Residential £5 million plus award. Commenting on the awards Anna remarks: “To me, any recognition of talent and passion surrounding design and architecture is very important. Admiring an individual’s skills and personal work is such a huge compliment and to even be nominated is such a wonderful honour”.
“ From sand touch wallpaper and glass beads to fine studded curtains, the different textures featured throughout the apartment give all the spaces depth and character. ”
The location and views were a big inspiration for the design of this London project. The aim was to make the most of the London view and create a harmonious, contemporary design that complemented this view. The inspiration was also based on Anna’s signature style of blending contemporary design with glamour. “I like to work with neutral schemes”, explains Anna, “the most important thing is not to overdo the design scheme – try to keep it simple.” The apartment was designed for a family of four. The children are twins and live away from home. They wanted their rooms to be similar but at the same time have individual details to suit their personalities. Anna was faced with a brief of changing the interior layout whilst ensuring the apartment remained spacious. Anna changed the apartment layout by completely opening the entrance area and installing a walk in wardrobe and guest bathroom. There is now also an open-plan living and dining room space. On entering the apartment, you are greeted by a practical, open and bright space leading to the living room area. Anna felt it was important to make the entrance feel as inviting as possible as it sets the tone for the rest of the house. The large mirror which is also a clock, is a great statement piece and it reflects light making the entrance area feel and look wider. The sand textured wall paper with the vertical lines in the entrance area, corridor and the living room create the illusion of higher walls and ceilings. The white shiny textured ceramic floor tiles were laid out in a diamond pattern as it also helps the room look bigger. The lights and lamps in the entrance highlight the furniture finishes and build the atmosphere. Leading on from the entrance the living room is very bright with tons of natural light during the day and the city’s light flooding into the apartment in the evening. The sofas are located in the middle of the room and face the fireplace, making the space feel cosy
and intimate. You can get a view of the whole room with the library located to the left and dining room to the right of the living room area. The cream leather sofas add to the light effect. The sofa design is practical and comfortable as the back can easily be adjusted for more back support. The coffee table has an onyx table top finish which matches the sofa shade. Anna worked with stone to add another level of texture to the room. For the window treatment, Anna didn’t want to overload with too much fabric so she used just enough curtain to give the room the cosy yet light feel it has. The dining room is next to the kitchen and overlooks the whole living room. The glass dining table with matching dining chairs gives the space a clean and modern feel. Anna adds: “The idea was not to block the space but make it look as easy and light as possible”. The master bedroom is all about ultimate comfort and complete luxury. Anna’s vision was to make it a personal sanctuary whist ensuring that style wasn’t compromised. The lights give the room just the right amount of drama and mirrors widen the space. The soft textures and fabrics on the bed and carpet make the master bedroom warm and inviting. Anna wanted to ensure that each bedroom was created with its own identity. Both the master bedroom and family bedroom have slick lines and similar dressing tables but the different wallpapers and bed linen in each room gives both spaces their own personality. The luxurious and soft bed linen and curtains make the rooms effortlessly cosy. Anna keeps it simple with special touches and slick shiny chrome finishes throughout the apartment. A key aspect of the project is the way in which Anna made the space look so much bigger than it was before. With the clever use of lighting and mirrors, Anna has created the illusion of higher ceilings and larger rooms. The design works well because it is timeless and should never look dated. Anna comments: “I like to design timeless schemes that people don’t tire of quickly. I also like to mix different styles that work together. I love working with cream and ivory shades, these are my favourite. You can then mix any colour in and the effect is always very bright in your house. Especially in London, when most of the time it is grey.” The apartment is filled with a bright energy and a flow of light from room to room. The white and ivory colour palette is complemented by the use of accent colour accessories. Anna used shiny lacquered finishes on some of the surfaces and the best quality fabrics and leathers. From sand touch wallpaper and glass beads to fine studded curtains, the different textures featured throughout the apartment give all the spaces depth and character.

The brief of the project was to challenge current thinking and propose something a little different but not just a fantasy. It has to be credible and relevant, yet provoke discussion. The intriguing idea of removing the windows from the cabin is compensated by using existing or very near future flexible screen technology to display the exterior environment on the inside surfaces of the cabin via external cameras. This presents new possibilities for the exterior design, being free of windows allows for a svelte and elegant aesthetic treatment. See a film of this concept here: https://vimeo.com/78458486

Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge
Cathay Pacific – The Bridge
Reminiscent of a living room environment, it is a reassuring yet familiar space for passengers to settle in comfortably. The new lounge features warm colours, timber flooring and luxurious carpet, with natural sunlight filtering through the floor to ceiling windows. Black granite, oak slat walls, black tiles and oak timber create a warm environment. Burnished brass panels and aerofoil louvres, together with bronze walls accentuate the understated elegance in the dining and bar areas, while the use of Corian claddings adds a touch of modern simplicity.
The brief for Turkey-based Autoban was to offer Turkish hospitality at its highest in a relaxing and contemporary atmosphere. Seventeen-foot high spherical pods divide the space into sections while maintaining open views. Each pod has a specific purpose such as library, restaurant, tea garden, screening room, kids playground, and they are organised in order of passenger priorities. The lounge features a series of bubble-like portals creating a second shell within the existing shell of the airport. This substructure brings the airport to a human scale and adds warmth to the space. www.autoban.com.tr

Morph
Seat Concept
Remodelled to bespoke standards, the design sets a benchmark for comfort, living space and customisation. The typical flat seat back has been re-sculpted with a wraparound headrest shroud evocative of mid-century lines. Panels and armrests are fitted with fibre optic lighting and the patent-pending design gently illuminates the aisle floor. Adding an extra dimension to long-haul travel, key features include: business class inspired styling, cradle recline position, optimised knee space, fibre optic lighting, Italian leather and a branded decorative trim.
The concept named Morph has been designed to allow passengers choose the amount of space they pay for and to provide a better fit for more travellers. Adapting to the changing needs of each individual passenger, Morph is still a standard product and serves as an innovative alternative to standard seating arrangements on commercial aircraft today. Morph is a revolutionary product for travellers. By increasing comfort levels and adapting to people’s needs, it does not reduce the airlines capacity in any way.

The overriding philosophy was to optimise passenger wellbeing, to replicate the sense of comfort experienced when entering a top end hotel and to tie in with modern needs by providing the best in technological facilities. The brief from Emirates President, Tim Clark was to create something unique following the brand launch for the A340-500. The project features a brand new look and feel with improved features. Re-launched with a sophisticated and contemporary aura, the design matches that of our First Class lounge at Hong Kong International Airport. There is transparency between interior and exterior, interplay of levels, handsome triple height atriums and treatment of the yacht as a proper transportation machine communicating the structure internally and externally, as well as a direct relationship with the sea.
In order for powering predictions to be realistic a preliminary weight estimate was calculated. Initial investigations placed the vessel at approximately 80 tonnes displacement. This value allows the vessel to reach target speeds, which range from 30 to 35 Knots, depending on weight loading.

The design is based on its character: sharp and inspired by wild sea life, sophisticated as its performance, impressive as comfort and joy of living on the sea.
The goal for this project was to develop a yacht with flat surfaces and more monolithic proportions, allowing the use of LED- embedded glass panels on a large portion, if not the entirety of the yacht’s superstructure.

The monolithic nature of the design has resulted in a very elegant and dynamic design. There are four well-appointed staterooms below, a formal dining area, galley, salon and helm station on the main deck level, with three distinct outdoor gathering spots at the aft deck, foredeck and Flybridge. The thoroughbred hull form leaves no doubt that this yacht has achieved the targets set. The yacht’s lavish interior allows all thoughts of the aggressive characteristics to melt away.

Developed by Giulini Ben Brahim Design & Engineering as the firstday cruiser in its size, First Koot offers wide exterior and interior open spaces. The theme of large spaces is continued outside as well: the transom is open to the water and only three steps divide the cockpit from the large swim platform. The upper front deck, dressed in teak, completely unobstructed, becomes an extensive and comfortable sun tanning area. First Koot features a ‘V’ shape planing hull with variable deadrise angle. She can reach a cruising speed of over 30 knots with a nautical mile range of approximately 300.

finot-conq ARCHITECTES Compete for the Sailing Yacht Over 30 Metres Award in the IY&A Awards 2014 finot-conq ARCHITECTES have been shortlisted for the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014. NOMAD IV will compete for the Sailing Yacht over 30 metres Award. Upon first look, it is quite obvious that this boat is a bit on the radical side of the 100’ playing field, with proportions that are quite different from most 100’ cruising yachts out there. That was to be expected from the extremely simple design brief that the owner gave the designer at the beginning of the international architects’ contest that led to the project. She was to be the fastest cruising 100 footer in the world. The operative word here is, in fact, “cruising”: How do you pack first class accommodation for 12 guests and 3-4 crew, with at least 16sqm for the owner’s cabin and ample headroom throughout in a very fast yacht ? The cockpit should also be able to host a party for at least 50 persons. And the yacht should sail very close to her maximum speed at a comfortable cruising heel angle of 12° or less, with a sail plan optimised for the Mediterranean light airs. www.finot-conq.com

From the finest fabrics and materials all the way through the complete outfitting of this project no details were spared. Beginning from the custom exterior to the interior of this yacht, the opportunity for YachtNext has been profoundly rewarding. Some of the materials used on the project consisted of: Custom silk carpets, designed pattern marble/glass stone foyers, imported Smokey
quartz backlit bar, high gloss sapele in 2 tone finish with Polish Nickel inlays, custom designer furniture. The process for this yacht began with the General Arrangement and Exterior Styling. YachtNext’s 3D renderings of the interior enabled the owners to approve the concept & design intent. The design brief for this project was inspired by a relaxed family atmosphere: Each stateroom was designed to transform into additional sleep arrangements and includes a bed conversion into a playroom (queen bed to sofa). Also, twin beds were to transform into a queen bed for guests. The owners’ cabin was to be fully equipped with a full 26’ beam walk in closet. www.yachtnext.com

Y.CO have been Successfully Shortlisted for the IY&A Awards 2014 with OCEAN PARADISE Y.CO have been successfully shortlisted for the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014. OCEAN PARADISE will compete for the Power Yacht over 40m Award. Ocean Paradise is 55m of unbridled luxury, where the senses of sea, air and light combine in the funkiest of forms. The vision of the owners was to think outside the box of conformity to bring the elements of light and the sea into the interior. Large windows and un-obstructed views of the sea, with open light spaces were key. The interior had to be contemporary but cool as well. Funky, Fun and functional. The fabrics and materials from the marble to the cushions all had to engage the senses, sight and touch. Where possible every effort was made to open spaces to give an uncluttered but still comfortable feel. The aim was to have an interior that
people felt comfortable to be in. Clever use of spaces was needed to ensure that storage requirements of the crew were met, whilst not compromising the interior design. Clean lines of the interior with the panelling accented by LED lighting gives the feeling that everything was floating. RGB LED lights were also used to help set the mood in the cabins and salons. Stitched leather panels were desired for the cabins and main stair case, where the stitching styles of Lamborghini, Ferrari classic, Chevy are seen. The fun element to the design extends to the exterior where the brightly coloured cushions and poufs shout out comfort. The exterior brief was to keep the funk! Carbon fiber bars and DJ table keep the decks looking racy, whilst the loose furniture can all be arranged as desired, including a hidden 12 seat table on the sundeck. The upper deck aft has many carbon fiber features including a glass and carbon table with skylight into the main salon, as well as a carbon fiber bar. www.y.co

This issue is all about the contenders for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014. Now in their fourth year, they have grown considerably in recent years and this year short-listed projects are amongst some of the most inspirational, forward thinking and evolutionary in the industry. We have profiled each project, for every category, as yet uncertain of winners at the time of going to print, as that decision as you are aware is down to you via our online voting system. This is your opportunity however to learn more about the projects; if you are one of the thousands of voters who have voted each week you will be aware of the schemes competing. If you have
missed out on the opportunity to do this, this year, we will of course be back in 2015 with a larger awards programme, increased categories and more inspirational projects for you to take a look at and consider when voting. Next issue we will be able to tell you a little more about the winning projects for 2014 in each category and we will of course then be featuring them in more detail over the coming months.
