Estate Villa in Nurai, Abu Dhabi This luxurious house situated in Abu Dhabi has spectacular views of the Abu Dhabi skyline and each room takes maximum advantage of this. The brief was simple, to create a “luxury family home” on this wonderful island. To cater to the needs of a large family we had to make sure that the furniture would not only be beautiful but also hard wearing. We upholstered all the furniture downstairs in outdoor fabrics for ease of maintenance and practicality. An amazing house in a stunning location!

It is that seasonal time of year when we apparently consider major changes and purchases in our homes, such as kitchens and bathrooms. So like every other home interest magazine who has conducted their research we dutifully feature our seasonal kitchen and bathroom feature this issue. The reality is, of course, that as many of us are designers, architects or employ designers and architects to work on such matters, we will be considering kitchens and bathrooms throughout the year. So for 2015 you may see a break with our traditional pattern of features in line with consumer spending patterns and more on

a basis of innovation in design whenever it arises. I am very excited to tell you that from November design et al will no longer be a “back to back” magazine with Luxe et al. No, we are not losing the yachts and aviation, Luxe will become a bi-monthly title so for 6 issues each year you will now receive a copy of design et al and Luxe et al. Elsewhere we continue to feature short-listed and award-winning projects as decided and determined by you, our readers, and next month the first of our winner’s issues will be published featuring some of the 2014 Award winning projects from the recent International Design & Architecture Awards. Until then, Joanne

hotel awards–the winning projects Hotel Am Steinplatz Submitted by: bost group berlin Winner of the Hotel 50-200 Rooms Award Built in 1907-08 by the famous Art Nouveauarchitect August Endell, the construction is valid as an extraordinary historic building. Since 1917 it was one of the favoured hotels in Berlin and celebrated its first period of prosperity in the twenties. After many different uses it was rebuilt from 2010 and reopened in December 2013. The public area of the hotel is arranged on the ground floor such as the main entrance with lobby and reception, restaurant and bar, boarding rooms and smokers lounge, public toilets and back office. The guest rooms are located on the upper floors 1 to 5 - every room was individually designed in relation to the existing architecture, some of them even with original stucco. There is one suite on the 4th floor and two Spa Suites on the 5th floor. The Spa and gym area is located on the 5th and 6th floor. The 6th floor has been added in close cooperation with the preservation order. In the so-called ‘roaring twenties’ many celebrities, artists, and foreign aristocrats living in exile in Berlin, met and celebrated in this hotel. Photographer: Lucas Müller

Topping Rose House Submitted by: Champalimaud Design Winner of the Hotel Under 50 Rooms Award Eight years in the making, Topping Rose House is eclectic, classic and clean, maintaining a strong sense of the natural beauty and sophistication akin to the Hamptons. The historic 1842 estate, named Topping Rose House, has been transformed into a luxurious destination inn. The property features an acclaimed restaurant and bar, 22 bespoke guest rooms and amenities including a wellness centre. Guest accommodations include luxury suites that have been configured within the historic mansion, twelve new guest cottages and three modern studios within a contemporary addition. A refurbished 19th century barn serves as a studio for private events. The suites are adorned with Tolomeo bedside sconces and custom-designed iron chests. Within the cottage suites, beds are crafted from reclaimed wood with custom upholstered headboards. Colour and pattern are used to create bold accents. Lime green and blue Madeline Weinrib rugs complement graphic pillows from John Robshaw Textiles. Black Windsor chairs pair with midcentury tables, befitting the inn’s origin with a contemporary look and feel. The design seamlessly connects old and new worlds, blending contemporary and traditional elements that emphasise comfort, luxury and the original antique appointments of the property. Luxury accommodations in historic buildings are rare on the East End of Long Island, and The Topping Rose House is no exception; the property is one of the only 5-star hotels in the Hamptons.

Ballyfin Hotel Submitted by: Purcell Winner of the Hotel Suite Award Ireland’s finest Neo-classical house, Ballyfin, was transformed through conservation and repair into an exquisite and comfortable country house hotel. The design brief was to restore the house with great sensitivity and a strong understanding of the estate’s significance and refurbish it to serve as a five star hotel followings years of dilapidation and its former use as a school. As part of the restoration, the interiors at Ballyfin have been sympathetically restored and reinvigorated. The brief was to create the impression of an Irish country house from which the family had just departed, leaving behind all that previous generations had accumulated over the years, including souvenirs from the Grand Tour and design inspirations acquired when travelling abroad: Ballyfin should be comfortable, stylish, discreet and Irish, with layers of history to be unravelled and enjoyed.

hotel awards–the winning projects Coworth Park Spa Submitted by: Purcell Winner of the Spa Hotel Award Having created a luxury 21st Century country house at Coworth Park, the Dorchester Collection required a unique eco luxury spa. The spa emerges as a sculptural form from the natural landscape, blurring the edges between built and natural form. Facilities are arranged on two levels: a lower level with pool and gym, and an upper entry level containing the changing rooms, treatment rooms, lounges and café. Carbon neutrality is the future for all modern designs and Coworth Park Spa is leading the way in the hospitality industry as an environmentally-advanced estate. Spa facilities are naturally energy intensive due to the high heating requirements, lighting levels and environmental requirements of the various treatment facilities offered.

L’Apogée Courchevel Submitted by: L’Apogée Courchevel Winner of the Ski Hotel Award L’Apogée Courchevel is the latest masterpiece in the Oetker Collection, recreating the finest European hospitality for which it is renowned.

Benoît Violier Restaurant de l’hôtel de Ville By Cittolin Polli & Associés SA Winner of the Restaurant Award

Renowned architect and interior designers Joseph Dirand and India Mahdavi created every element of the interiors from the rooms to restaurants, the private chalet to the chair by the fireplace. They have produced a chic, contemporary design that is soft, comfortable and luxuriant. India Mahdavi has worked around the world on residential, hospitality and scenography projects and has established a reputation for her fresh and colourful approach. Together with Joseph Dirand they merged to create a unique style for L’Apogée Courchevel, which relates more to the language of a château than a chalet. In design they found the perfect balance between contemporary and historical reference that is ‘authentic yet not nostalgic’. Joseph Dirand is renowned for his hyper-sophisticated and architectural style. He found L’Apogée Courchevel a generous space and also felt clearly that it would be more of a home. This is transmitted in the design which is intimate and comfortable, with cosiness and warmth that corresponds with being in the mountains. The world’s most enthusiastic skiers and their families will have the finest ski holiday imaginable.

The restaurant l’hotel de Ville from chef Benoit Violier was the object of a transformation based on a new concept which refers to awakening of the 5 senses. The restaurant L’hotel de Ville from chef Benoit Violier was the object of a transformation based on a new concept which refers to awakening of the 5 senses. The first architectural approach was to create the maximum available volume in this belle epoque house. This included enhancements to the ceilings to the periphery of the rooms including works to allow natural light to highlight the composition of the facade while revealing the quality of the interior volume. The feeling of space and openness is thus maximised. Different shades of brown amongst other colours were chosen and used throughout, from the stucco walls to internal finishes, bringing a feeling of comfort and a soft light. These natural colors are associated with chocolate brown which, for its part, will give this interior a chic and modern look. The wood used was elm which is an excellent wood to bring a natural feel to the finish.

hotel awards–the winning projects Silks Restaurant Submitted by: Michael Fiebrich Design Winner of the Restaurant Within A Hotel Award Silks Restaurant, located in the Crown Metropol Hotel in Perth, Australia is 8000 sq feet with 240 seats, including a sky-lit sunken dining area, semi-private dining areas, 5 private dining rooms on two levels and a custom wine room. With a menu based on traditional Cantonese cuisine but specialising in fresh produce from Western Australia, the goal was to create a space with the regal elegance befitting of the Silks brand, while bringing a fresh and contemporary approach to the interiors. The oval main dining room features an intricate back-lit feature ceiling, hand-painted with traditional Chinoiserie patterns in parchment, ivory and gold, but the main event is a collection of dramatically scaled, custom vases, using traditional Chinese designs commissioned in sparkling Italian glass mosaic tiles.

St Regis Osaka Submitted by: GA Design International Winner of the Lobby/ Public Areas/ Lounge Award Blending Japanese design and Western architectural details, the new St. Regis Osaka embraces the rich heritage of the St. Regis brand. The brief was to create a hotel in keeping with Colonel John Jacob Astor IV’s vision for a new style of luxury with interiors that reflect the atmosphere of a luxurious private residence more than just a hotel. Evocative colours and lighting were used to play with the concept of moon and sun which runs throughout the hotel; the guests experience different ambiances as they experience the different spaces and levels of the hotel. The guest’s journey through the St. Regis Hotel begins with the moonlight setting of the entrance hall, which was created using a combination of silver leaf, alongside reflective surfaces. The dramatic combination of bronze and dark marble flooring with the crystal tree as the centre piece creates a real sense of arrival. Japanese timber screens adorn classically detailed stone portals leading through to the concierge and elevator hall. In keeping with the theme of Moon and Sun, on entering the lift at entrance level the lighting tone gently changes as the lift rises from the cool moonlight glow opening to a bright sunlight tone at the reception level above. Arriving at the spacious 12th floor Reception Hall guests enjoy a calming view over a private Japanese garden terrace positioned high above the city. The Reception and Lobby Lounge evoke the brightness and power of the Sun.

W Guangzhou Fei Submitted by: A.N.D. / Nomura Co. Ltd Winner of the Bar/ Club/ Lounge Award FEI is a bar lounge in the first W hotel in Guangzhou, China. A large cubic space with 18m each side which floats in the façade and whose three sides are all glazing was given to the design team. They transformed the large cube into a bar lounge of three layers (1000sqm approx.) which is covered by soft organic lighting skin with constant and organic modification – as if it is an aurora. The team created two design concepts to transform the glass box into the bar. The first concept is to cover the massive architectural and structural glass opening with soft organic lighting skin which is new in the world. The skin of innumerable fiber optics controls colour and speed of flash, it sparkles with constant modification. Also, the team managed to light up the whole wall with minimal numbers of light sources by a highly minute method of mixing the fiber and finishing gut. It is low cost & high performance. The lighting sources are placed inside of the ceiling, so it is easy for maintenance.

The restaurant of L’hotel de Ville from chef Benoît Violier has been transformed based on a new concept, which aims to awake the five senses. Situated in the beautiful Lausanne suburb of Crissier, the restaurant’s interior was exclusively styled by renowned design firm, Cittolin Polli & Associés SA. Recognised for its innovative design, the Benoît Violier Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville was announced as the winning project in the Restaurant category at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2014. The event, which was held at the prestigious Hotel Cipriani in Venice, saw internationally renowned designers fly in from across the globe. The Restaurant category was very competitive, with a total of 9 projects all hoping to clinch the Award.

“ I don’t have a personal style. Architecture and design are responses to a complex and natural environment that evolves over time. ”

The first architectural task that Cittolin Polli & Associés SA outlined was to create the maximum available volume in this belle epoque house. Enhancements were made to the ceilings and work was also carried out to expose natural light, highlighting the composition of the facade. By revealing the quality of the interior volume, space has truly been maximised. The different shades of brown amongst other colours are present throughout the interior and were specifically chosen to achieve a contemporary look. The stucco walls and internal finishes bring a feeling of comfort and provide a soft light. These natural colors are associated with chocolate brown which, for its part, will give this interior a chic and modern ambiance. Elm wood – renowned for its strength and quality was chosen to convey a natural aura to the finish. With a certain warmth and friendliness associated with elm wood, guests of the restaurant are ensured a welcoming and home-like environment. The furniture was especially imagined to a bespoke and

exclusive standard – designed to be subtle, serene and above all functional. The kitchen is designed to the highest quality and features brushed stainless steel with a vast array of new technical installations. It was enlarged by 48m2, creating the much needed space for chefs to carry out a premium service. Patrick Polli, CEO of Cittolin Polli & Associés SA believes the IH&P Awards play an important role, as it demonstrates the high level one has to achieve to be recognised. Speaking to design et al about his own personal design style, Polli highlighted that it is more important to adapt to design, rather than a ‘personal style’. He added: “I don’t have a personal style. Architecture and design are responses to a complex and natural environment that evolves over time.” As the winning project in the Restaurant category at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2014, Benoît Violier Restaurant de l’Hôtel is truly worthy of the outstanding appraisal received from the design industry. Keeping in the spirit of nature, this project is at the forefront of groundbreaking designs and is a prime example of innovation at its best. Based in Switzerland, Cittolin Polli & Associés SA is a design firm with an outstanding reputation among clients and fellow designers. CEO Patrick Polli and Director Stefano Cittolin are the duo behind their exceptional portfolio of projects. Kitchens

MAIN IMAGE: Birchwood by Inspired Design Ergonomic, functional, practical and efficient, was the design brief provided by the client. Over a period of two years, the client and the designer (Nicola O’Mara) sat down and went over all the fine details that were required for this hand made kitchen. Together, they looked into the varying ways in which the client would use the space and they successfully zoned in on one design. There would be an area in which to work, read, relax and eat, and a specific area in which to cook. Both which would work together and flow into each section. The utility room, was accessed from the kitchen; a place in which larger items could be stored and a place to laundry. The layout was reconfigured so that the outlook was towards the woodland outside, the door was moved so that it was easily accessible from the bar

area, and would be beneficial for entertaining. Once the correct usage of the space was agreed the client and designer moved onto the textures and materials. Strong white, dark walnut , stony greys with a shot of colour was the outcome. One of the main features was the handmade solid wood slatted doors; they create soft warm tones, texture and body. This was then coupled with the strong white Silestone worktops, and white glass splash backs. All the cupboards were operated using a push latch motorised system, as well as the dishwasher, recycling bins and drawers. All the appliances were chosen on functionality and energy rating. The overall design, is sleek, clean, stylish as well as soft and warm with a hint of zing. www.id-inspired-design.co.uk

Kensington by Sola Kitchens The kitchen is completely bespoke, and handcrafted in solid wood in Sweden to the exact specifications of the client. The client’s specification was to have a classic kitchen with a modern twist. The layout with three parallel runs of units, in combination with modern appliances and choice of worktops, creates a modern feel to the kitchen despite the choice of quite traditional furniture. The family also wanted plenty of storage and workspace as well as a large seating area at the island. The family has three children and entertain a lot so they wanted a very sociable place. To make the 4.5 meter long island feel lighter we lifted it up on legs and added led lights underneath. We used different worktop material on the island, a marble effect composite on the work area and white stained solid oak for the bar area. www.solakitchens.com

The Brasserie Kitchen by Smallbone of Devizes The Brasserie Kitchen is a new lifestyle kitchen from Smallbone of Devizes fusing traditional handcrafted techniques with a contemporary industrial feel. Three islands of varying sizes each serving a different purpose – teppan plate and griddle, gas hob, prepping and entertaining space replicating the more relaxed lifestyle of modern contemporary living. By combining different workstations, you can prep, chop, wash and cook while talking to family and friends. Every detail has been carefully considered from flat satin nickel plated tab handles on small drawers and u-shaped flat handles inspired by saucepan handles to a stainless steel plate rack with square section bars to a moveable hostess trolley that has been reinterpreted for today’s lifestyle, that comes complete with a warming drawer, which sits against the wall when not in use. The entire design of the kitchen has been carefully thought through, with ease of access to a range of appliances and workstations that work from every section of the kitchen regardless of which zone you are in. This enables multiple people to use the space at the same time. An oversized dresser with open shelving, with deep top cabinets and glass sliding doors negating the need to move items from the worktop in order to open the cupboards. The use of long horizontal strips of pickled oak, chosen for its knots and character, emphasizing the natural and beautiful variations in the timber give it a modern twist that is both beautiful and functional. www.smallbone.co.uk

Mosfilmovskaya St by Architecture & Design by Oleg Klodt The brief was to lay the apartment out into three areas including a large open-plan space (lounge, dining room, and kitchen). The designers were also asked to provide storage space and work these organically into the floor plan of a fairly small apartment. The owners wanted a calm and classic interior. The most challenging aspect in creating the large open-plan space was laying out the kitchen. The design team had to combine the living room, dining room and kitchen so that the overall resulting space didn’t seem clogged with interior items. They went for an overtly neutral approach for the kitchen – a simple white facade, without any handles, with the functional area of the kitchen tucked away in a kitchen island. All the technical features of

the kitchen slot away – even the kitchen tap can fold out of sight, and the extractor hood is built into a stone portal. The stonework on the kitchen surround is made like an elegant panneau – the only decorative element in this part of the apartment. The style of the décor arises from a combination of beautiful objects – different shades of purple and blue intertwine against a monochrome background, ranging from calm to lustrous tones. Meanwhile the upholstery features fabrics with contrasted textures and sheens – including Alcantara, suede, and velvet. The design team took the same approach when selecting the lighting, and juxtaposed different styles of lamps in unusual shapes. The light plaster moldings play off attractively against the C19th oil-paintings in extravagant gilt frames. www.olegklodt.com/en/

Palm Beach Retreat by Allison Paladino Interior Design The client asked Allison Paladino for a kitchen with modern cool lines for their contemporary comfortable vacation retreat. The kitchen, a collaborative design between Allison Paladino and Leeds Custom Design, is clad with white and grey cabinetry, and high end stainless steel appliances. The client wanted the family to gather for casual meals at the custom built breakfast bar. People are living today more casually and its great that this family can enjoy each others company whether in the kitchen or

breakfast room because of the open plan nature of the space. The contrast between the white glass and dark textured cabinetry creates drama that can be seen from many angles of the house including the more formal areas. Several people can prep at one time around the center island, another group can be at bar stools watching the TV in the family room and another group can be at the breakfast table, making this a versatile and kitchen for a big family and guests. www.apinteriors.com

Luxury Wentworth Kitchen by Stephen Clasper The brief was to deliver a kitchen and family area that was completely out of the ordinary – a space that didn’t look like a kitchen as we know it. The designers rose to the challenge and handled every aspect of the scheme, from initial concepts through hand-crafting the fitted furniture to final installation. The design was focused on delivering a unique room with a strong sense of opulence throughout. Their use of special, dyed veneers with dark, high-gloss lacquer and bespoke inset chrome panels provided a highly luxurious feel. The hand-made cabinetry incorporated the latest fitted Gaggenau appliances. Stephen Clasper Interiors designed an island - invisibly supported on a steel sub-frame – that’s striking in the way it is cantilevered. It has a 30mm polished Bianco Antique stone top, glamorous mirrored side panels and it incorporates a raised breakfast bar as well as a spacious preparation area. The designers crafted sliding pocket doors, which reveal a larder storage area lined with carbon fibre panels. The kitchen is a testament to the overall excellence of this prestige home. It functions perfectly, brings a strong feeling of luxury and sets the design and quality standards for the rest of the property.

Upper Park by Boscolo The scope of the project was a complete renovation of the interior in order to bring it up to date and meet the client’s specific requirements. The client has a large extended family living locally and they entertain guests visiting formally and informally on a regular basis with dinner parties. As such the kitchen was a focal point for the brief. The designers are particularly proud of their achievement in responding to the spiritual nature of their clients. They were under strict instructions to avoid using any fabrics and products derived from animal products e.g. leather & ivory. Every item had to be checked with the suppliers to ensure that they complied with their clients’ request. Further to

this, the design focused on an understated theme throughout with the use of a calm colour palette and tactile surfaces that were reminiscent of nature, avoiding any loud colours and patterns. A glass breakfast bar was specified to give the impression of greater space whilst still serving its core function. Two identical drop pendent lights designed by Paolo Lucidi and Luca Pevere for Foscarini highlight the central line of the room and provided symmetry and a sense of balance upon entering the space and the use of large floor tiles enabled the designers to reduce the number of distracting functional grout lines allowing a cleaner finish and drawing the eye to the detail of the surface itself. www. boscolo.co.uk

Keir Townsend: Shortlisted in the Living Space UK Award design et al are delighted to announce that Keir Townsend have been shortlisted in the Living Space – UK Award in the ID&A Awards 2014 with their project in Queensgate, London. The original layout of this apartment appeared uncomfortably small. The layout was changed to create a functional bathroom and an open plan kitchen as an integral part of the living space. ‘Art Object’ wall lights have been introduced throughout the project which improve the lighting overall and help to create different moods for different occasions. A number of decorative features have been introduced into the concept, many of which were inspired by nature, using organic

patterns and natural materials. The simple linear kitchen features reflective doors. Fabric and copper leaf have been laminated into the sheets of glass to add further reflective qualities. The work surface/ island doubles as a table and can comfortably seat 10. The bedroom is full of contrasting luxurious textures. The headboard has panels of leather, glass and crushed velvet. Again the lighting has been carefully introduced to create mood lighting. The luxurious bathroom features bespoke hand painted glass, with chrome taps and wenge inserts, and a cleverly designed bathroom butler provides bathroom storage. The apartment also features a hallway with a feature art display and a a cloakroom with a bespoke recycled glass basin. www.keirtownsend.com

Saunders Architecture Shortlisted for the Hotel Under 50 Rooms Award (Global) in the IH&P Awards 2015 Saunders Architecture have been successfully shortlisted in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015. Fogo Island Inn will compete for the Hotel Under 50 Rooms Award (Global). Fogo Island Inn is a five star inn designed by Saunders Architecture for the Shorefast Foundation on Fogo Island, Newfoundland, Canada. The Fogo Island Inn was conceived by the Shorefast Foundation, a Canadian charitable organization established by Zita, Anthony and Alan Cobb, as a building for learnings that have emerged from four centuries of lived experience on the northeast coast of Newfoundland – to help carry the past into the future. It was created to be a cultural and economic engine for Fogo Island, one of Canada’s oldest settlements; created in response to a pressing need to find new relevance for traditional knowledge and traditional ways. The goal was to “find new ways with old things”. Engaging

this cultural and intellectual heritage was a key priority in the design of the building and was a key asset in its construction. The Inn is owned by a charitable foundation and is operated for the benefit of the communities of Fogo Island and Change Islands. The main building is an X in plan with the two-storey west to east volume containing public spaces while the four-storey southwest to north-east volume, parallel to the coast. All 29 guest rooms face the ocean and look onto the fishing grounds that attracted people to this island. Public areas include an art gallery curated by Fogo Island Arts; a dining room, bar and lounge which was recently rated as one of the top ten new restaurants in Canada by Enroute magazine; and a heritage library, and a cinema. The fourth floor roof deck has saunas and outdoor hot tubs with views of the sea. Traditional style “shore” legs are used to support the floors while minimizing the overall building footprint and the impact on the adjacent rocks, lichens and berries. www.saunders.no

“ Every aspect of this large chalet was designed, re-designed and designed again, to deliver the best creative solutions for the client’s requirements. ”

This luxurious and contemporary ski apartment is situated in the beautiful French ski-resort of Val D’Isere. Exclusively styled by Inspired Design, the interior is a picture of modern alpine elegance. Shortlisted at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2013, ‘Les Chocas’ was an excellent project at the event.

the standout feature of this project was designing a 20m long living space overlooking the men’s Olympic down hill ski run. O’Mara added: “We divided this room up into different sections, each area having its own wonderful view of the mountains, whilst enjoying the comforts and warmth of the log fire inside.”

The brief for this wonderful project was to create an elegant, comfortable and individual alpine home, using tactile, textural and contemporary materials. With carefully designed ceiling beams and timber walls, these features helped conceal a soft and delicate lighting design and sound system. Rich oak, slate floors and dark timber panelling and furniture were used in conjunction to the light soft walls and textural fabrics. Every aspect of this large chalet was designed, re-designed and designed again, to deliver the best creative solutions for the client’s requirements.

Overall, the design works incredibly well, which is attributed to an excellent client. Inspired Design and the Owner developed an outstanding working relationship, which conceived the beautiful design of Les Chocas. “We bounced ideas around and discussed the project at depth, working well as a team, which is a little rare nowadays!” explains O’Mara.

The space, functionality and design of each room, was individually planned down to the smallest detail. The chalet features a cinema, a sauna & steam room, an après ski area and a breakfast and formal dining area. The rooms were designed for visitors, which accommodate families as well as office space and bedrooms with luxurious en-suites. The client instructed Inspired Design to approach this ski chalet with a contemporary touch rather than the typical alpine look. This was achieved by concentrating on rich, soft tweeds and woollen fabrics, combining this with sleek glass, metal, timber and organic furniture and materials. As a proud owner of this luxury apartment in the French Alps, the client works, lives and entertains in his beautiful chalet during the whole ski season. Nicola O’Mara – company director and founding partner of Inspired Design, believes

Speaking about the importance of the International Hotel & Property Awards 2013, O’Mara highlighted that the awards provide the chance to expand business and demonstrate work to potential clients. O’Mara said: “I think this is a fantastic opportunity to help promote my business and work along side a prestigious company such as design et al. The award is important to help show clients what can be achieved with hard work and a good designer.” Passionate about good design, Inspired Design balance originality and imagination with attention to detail and an obsession with quality craftsmanship. Established in 1998 by Nicola O’Mara and John Merriman, they undertake projects large and small, classic and contemporary. Their awardwinning portfolio includes ski chalets, townhouses, country homes, penthouses and luxury retreats, in the UK and Europe. As a strong contender at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2013, design et al were delighted to see Inspired Design compete at this global event.

Ski Chalet Bathroom, Japanese Alps by Design Intervention The bathroom has been designed for a British Expat’s vacation retreat in the Japanese Alps. Baths in Japan are not simply functional: they are an indulgence. In Japan, bathing is a intrinsic part of the culture. Baths are for relaxing, not cleansing. The inclusion of a Japanese style bathroom was a key required for the vacation home. The client requested for a significant part of the floor plan to be allocated for a Japanese style bathroom that would be a place to unwind and recharge. A space to relax and unwind is a key theme of this design brief with an inherent Japanese fell. With freezing mountain temperatures outside, the bathroom is designed to be warm and intimate. The brief was to invoke an essence of Japan with a sense of

tranquility: combining warmth with a true zen experience. We used a warm hued timber, with red/orange undertones to add richness to the room. A wood clad ceiling and floor injects warmth in a way that tile never could. Upholstered furniture, accessories and artwork give the room a soft, snug feel. Opting for a pair of tubs allows for more comfort than a single piece for two. Made of wood, which not only invokes a warmer feel but its insulating properties maintains heated water temperature for longer. The windows are dressed with Shoji screens. The tiles are simple but have been laid to reflect traditional Japanese post and beam millwork. This is a perfect place to indulge tired muscles after a long day on the slopes. www.designintervention.com.sg

ABOVE: The Keys by E3 Property Materials within this fabulous development at The Keys in Quinta Do Lago have been sourced from around the world to deliver unique finishes and features. These have been chosen for quality as much as for texture, beauty, rarity and sustainability. The homes have a timeless quality to them, as classical elements have been introduced into the design. The Master Bathroom of this light-filled apartment at The Keys was designed to embody a sense of well-being, where the bathroom becomes a retreat designed to revitalise, pause & reflect. Sumptuous materials were chosen for their luminosity and ability to soften artificial lighting. The floor is an intricate basketweave of opulent calacatta & carrara marbles, providing a soothing underfoot surface which extends into the oversized, all-body enveloping rain shower and into the backlit vanity wall where book-matched slabs give the bathroom status and strength. Mirrors are generously-sized, designed to create a holistic effect by capturing the reflections of the Key Lago lake below and refracting its dappled brilliance around the room. Low Wood by Time & Space London The clients approached Time & Space London to create a personal sanctuary environment in their newly built home, as they were unhappy with their existing bathroom space. The build was to be entirely monochrome and exceptionally clean lined. It was therefore critical that any solution met these parameters whilst also creating a unique space in the home. Creating a personal sanctuary space for the clients was possible due to the large size of the bathroom and it was decided that this should be located with views from the windows of the grounds.

Privacy however still needed to be considered and both shower and WC should not be overlooked. Product storage was also critical. The design is impressive with all elements such as the grey glass selected to match in with the rest of the home. Its spatial layout allows for privacy and much more from the space than had we treated it as a ‘bathroom’. The Sanctuary Space gives the client a special space for themselves which, when combined with the drinks and fridge area provides a unique solution to helping them unwind. www.timeandspacelondon.com

Private Residence by Charlotte Conway Design The client liked the idea of re-creating a ski lodge feel or a Bali spa. He liked dark dramatic spaces, but needed it to be practical, as it was the only bathroom in the property, so needed it to function well, making the most of the space, despite its awkward shape with cut-off corner, and stepped back section. The Samuel Heath Country Bronze brassware, really sets off this bathroom, against the dark textured wood effect porcelain tiles, and pebble mosaics. If chrome had been used, it would have killed the calm and

complimentary tones. By introducing the granite washbowl, solid teak unit, and pebble mosaics, I was able to combine many textures and tone, and even better, were all natural products, plus they were all either waterproof or durable, perfect for a bathroom. The use of pebbles within the shower and bath area was to create a feeling of being in the natural outdoors whilst showering. Once that bathroom door is shut and the rain showerhead is on, you are transformed to another world, and the stress of the day in the busy capital city, are washed away. www.charlotteconwaydesign.co.uk

With a luxury interior and lighting design from Zephyr Interiors, this London Mews house was a full reconfiguration and refurbishment project. This historic mews building was transformed from four flats back into a single home. As a renowned company specialising in the design of high-end residential properties, Zephyr Interiors competed at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013. Short listed for the Residential £1 – £2.5 million Plus Award, this London Mews was a strong project in a highly competitive category.

“ Creativity and passion for beauty, craftsmanship, and the commitment to design excellence is at the heart of everything we do. ”

The key aspects of the project are that it is a boutique style home, great for entertaining friends, with as much open space as possible. It had to be welcoming, not minimalist and detract away from narrow space. Zephyr were tasked with making the basement feel like an intimate dining space where mood lighting was essential – any art work had to suit the space, and all technology is hidden where possible. Without being minimalist, the property features streamlined furniture to utilise space. A double height display case made of bespoke copper bronze metal, Perspex and wood links the living area with the dining area. By creating an imposing focal point in such a small space is able to really draw you into the rooms; it has a great visual impact with unique finishes. This draws attention away from the typically narrow, small internal scale of mews houses and instead interlinks spaces using over scaled bespoke furniture pieces such as the double height display cabinet. The glass screens with shutters allow extra light into the Master Bedroom suite and an illusion of continued space into the stairwell. The bespoke fitted furniture featured in the bedrooms and floor to ceiling bespoke doors ensures the rooms have a larger sense of scale. Everything is designed with meticulous attention to detail, even down to the metal bronze skirting and bronze and brass handles.

Joanna Higgins, Owner and Creative Director of Zephyr Interiors believe the International Design & Architecture Awards are very important in congratulating good design. She added: “The Awards adds excitement and interest into so much of people’s environment whether they are aware of it or not. It’s a tough job to get to it right and, at the end be a success. The amount of detail, time and consideration deserves recognition and praise. I hope it will encourage young talent into the profession – it serves to inspire.” Speaking about the next twelve months for the London-based company, Joanna Higgins is aiming to fulfill an objective by designing a specific commercial project and continue to endorse inspiring prospects: “I want to create value – and that is within my company and for my clients also. I would like to take on a boutique hotel project, continue to grow my business, and as always keep seeking out new things and challenges that inspire me.” design et al is delighted to announce that Zephyr Interiors are currently in the process of designing a number of turnkey projects. Higgins added: “Large scale refurbishments with basements, Town houses, Penthouses that are all very different and interesting. We really like to transform a space architecturally and design wise – keeping the façade and removing the internal arrangement and creating an entirely new space. This is the usual type of project for us, with a complete interior design and decoration service.” Zephyr Interiors specialises in the design of bespoke, luxury residential interiors for both private individuals and property developers, within the prime areas of London. Established in 2009 by Joanna Higgins, Zephyr is a thriving design house where, “Creativity and passion for beauty, craftsmanship, and the commitment to design excellence is at the heart of everything we do.” Based in Chelsea Harbour, Zephyr is highly renowned for transforming interiors, providing a clear voice to clients and an identity that is unique.

Success for Palm Project by Elemento LLC in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014 Elemento LLC’s renovation of a Signature Riviera Mediterranean Villa on the Palm Jumeriah has won the Gulf State Residential £5 million plus (property value) Award. Whilst the clients had few detailed requirements or ultimate aspirations for the project, they had a clear concept of the outcomes they wished to achieve – a calm environment with neutral tones acting as a backdrop for accented details utilizing their favourite colours. It was of paramount importance that the interior architecture created living areas that flowed one to another and were infused with light. Detailed discussion of space planning highlighted specific requirements to meet the differing needs of their two sons; one of the teenagers wanted an area where he could have a degree of independence, whilst the other son had specific needs which required close proximity to his parents.

It was apparent that the clients’ required a design that utilized the panoramic views over The Palm and that great care should be given to designing a home that made the best possible use of their unique environment. Ultimately the clients’ required a design that was vibrant, full of flair with all the qualities of a five star hotel. The entrance expanse incorporates two stunning mashrabiya panels, fitted with LED lighting to create a dramatic evening effect, with a leather encased column erected either side; this eye-catching arrangement is repeated in key areas throughout the house. The lower floor consists of three zones, two of them being the TV Room and, adjacent to it, the formal Living Room. These split-level areas are connected by two open steps running the full width of the rooms and designed to incorporate shelving for books and a ramp. Both spaces are decorated in complimentary styles, colours and textiles to create a flow between the two, but also creating one area for watching TV and the other for reading and conversation. www.elementome.com

Hayslip Design Associates Competed for the Bespoke Cabinetry Award in the IPD Awards 2014 Shortlisted in the International Product Design Awards 2014, Hayslip Design Associates competed in the Bespoke Cabinetry category with ‘A Softer Interpretation of Brutal’. In 2013 Sherry Hayslip designed the interiors for the wine country vacation home of a noted Dallas art collector. Inspired by the Brutalist furniture designs of Paul Evens she collaborated with furniture artisan Michael Stallings to create a cantilevered cabinet that is a softer interpretation of the Brutalist movement. The result is a bespoke piece hand carved from solid walnut. A stylized rose motif is hand chiseled into the top, front, and sides of the cabinet. The underside of the cabinet features a water jetted aluminum panel with the same rose motif, designed to allow the interior LED lighting to glow from beneath the piece. Floating above the cabinet are three pieces of Starphire glass with a polished edge. The cabinet’s exterior is finished with a rusted iron milk paint. www.hayslipdesign.com

Shortlist Success for Cochrane Design with a project in the Kitchen Over £100,000 category Cochrane Design achieved shortlist success in the Kitchen Over £100,000 award in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. The brief for the kitchen was that it needed to be suitable for socialising in large numbers. The client wanted this space to be as welcoming and relaxing as the other living spaces in the house. After being stripped back to the brickwork the room has been redesigned using a mix of original features including elaborate cornicing and paneling. Far from being a restoration project the design has restored the elegance of the properties heritage but the layout of the pillar less room is contemporary in its execution. The main kitchen’s impressive scale makes it the undoubted hub of the home. On entry you are immediately aware of the

exceptional craftsmanship and materials that have been carefully selected to create this kitchen. Three floor-to-ceiling French doors flood the room with natural light and in the summer months entertaining can spill out onto the terrace of the landscaped garden. The different zones have been carefully planned flowing seamlessly from one to another. Informal dining and a relaxed lounge area share the space equally. Floor to ceiling cabinets and hanging lights frame the nine metre split level Marble Island with built in sinks and units and a breakfast bar at both ends. The marble splash back is a stunning example of pattern matching creating a butterfly effect that accentuates it’s already incredible natural beauty. It looks more like a work of art than a practical feature. The bespoke cabinetry houses a kitchen that would satisfy even the most demanding chefs, with state of the art appliances and a plethora of kitchen gadgetry to aid all manner of creations. www.ochranedesign.com

Park Royal on Pickering is a 16-storey mixeduse development comprising of hotel and a single office tower. Designed by WOHA Architects - the Singapore-based architecture practice, the hotel is strategically situated at the gateway of Singapore’s Central Business District, between Hong Lim Park and bustling Chinatown.

The crisp and streamlined tower blocks harmonise with surrounding cityscape. With an open-sided courtyard configuration, the ‘wall of buildings’ effect is significantly reduced, which maximises views and daylight into the building. The blue and green glass creates a beautiful patina that reflects the waters of Singapore River.

The unique style of Park Royal on Pickering has garnered excellent appraisal from across the design world. Subsequently, this saw the hotel short-listed at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2013.

Guests can also unwind at a rooftop bar, which offers spectacular 360-degree views of the city skyline. Developer, UOL Group, is committed to making a tangible difference to the environment by making sure that its developments are environmentally friendly. In keeping with this, part of the brief was to create a design that would achieve Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum Award, the nation’s highest environmental certification.

The 367 elegantly furnished guest rooms and suites offer spectacular views of the city and the hotel’s sky-gardens. This flagship hotel features a dedicated wellness floor with a day spa, a 300m nature trail and waterfall walk, an expansive pool terrace, a state-of-the art gymnasium as well as a business centre with full secretarial services.

“ By creating a natural and fresh aura, guests can feel rejuvenated after a stay at Park Royal on Picking. ”

With unique plant-covered balconies and terraces across the exterior, every guest is provided with a stunning garden view from their room. By creating 15,000 square metres of greenery, WOHA has achieved an astonishing feat, approximately doubling the area of the site.

Photography by Patrick Bingham-Hall These green spaces are complemented by the contoured surfaces that make up the building’s podium. Modelled on the topography of natural landscapes, these surfaces break through the glazed outer walls and continue through the reception spaces at ground level. According to WOHA, the design is chiseled to mimic natural landscapes and mountain rock formations as well as that of the contoured padi fields of Asia. The luscious green gardens breaks down the scale of the building. Public areas such as corridors, lobbies and common washrooms were also designed with stepping stones, planting and water features. By creating a natural and fresh aura, guests can feel rejuvenated after a stay at Park Royal on Picking. Overhangs and leafy foliage are used to screen these spaces from the weather and direct sun.

Its site, adjacent to an existing green lung within the heart of the CBD, Hong Lim Park, also gave cue for the development to be a building that conserves and contributes to the greenery within the high-rise city centre. The challenge was posed to WOHA to design a hotel that provides beyond the creature comforts of rooms and amenities, and to create an environment that inspires awe of nature and its surroundings. Established by Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell in 1994, WOHA undertake a diverse range of projects, including apartment towers, luxury resorts, mass-transit stations, condominiums, hotels, educational institutions, and public buildings. WOHA demonstrate a commitment to the implementation of sustainable yet innovative architecture, and within each project, they conceptualise all aspects of the architectural process: master planning, formal architecture, interior design, landscaping, lighting and furniture design. design et al were delighted to see WOHA compete at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2013. As a fantastic project, Park Royal on Pickering is an example of architecture at its best. We look forward to future projects from the Singapore-based architecture practice.

“ Use of natural materials such as wood, glass, concrete and stone add the organic style. Set against these natural textures is an enviable selection of colours, as well as handcrafted elements that create a relaxing aura. ”

Situated in one of the most desirable streets in Kensington, this exceptional and beautiful house has undertaken a complete interior refurbishment. The London-based design firm Darma is behind this spectacular design, which was a short listed project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013. As an excellent competitor in the Residential £5 million Plus Award, Darma continue to receive excellent appraisal for their innovative portfolio of projects.

The refurbishment and redesign of the house included the interior decoration and front house redesign. This was fully stripped down to the basic structure and new steel beams were installed. New flooring, the creation of five en-suite bedrooms, and a modern and efficient under floor heating system were also added. The light and calming atmosphere combined with the superior craftsmanship of Darma, results in a truly unique property.

The client for this Kensington house has a true passion renovating properties to their former glory and selling them on. With the potential to become a lovely and idyllic family home, the client purchased this property and specifically asked Darma to undertake a complete renovation. By having a clear idea of what he wanted to achieve, the client desired a house that was functional and attractive. With an excellent balance of both contemporary and classic elements, there is a running theme of simplicity and uniformity for the basement and lower ground floor area. This accommodates the kitchen, dining and living areas as well as a utility room and fabulous natural oak wine cabinet.

After speaking to Ewelina Chruszczyk, company director about her own personal design style, it is clear this Kensington House follows the trademark design of Darma: “Each project is considered in a unique way, specifically tailored to a clients requirements in order to achieve their perfect environment. However, our style can be described as sophisticated contemporary with the focus on comfort, elegance and quality.”

Warmth, classic and sophistication are the keywords for the ground, first and second floor. The elegant master bedroom features a playful mix of light and dark colours, which creates a luxury ambience. Use of natural materials such as wood, glass, concrete and stone add the organic style. Set against these natural textures is an enviable selection of colours, as well as handcrafted elements that create a relaxing aura. It is quite simply exquisite finishing in even the smallest of details. “The Darma team are fantastic, they can create almost everything from the wood and upholstery, so I only purchased a couple of new furniture and decorative accessories” explains the client. The property comprises five bedrooms (all en-suite) and also offers a wealth of entertaining space including an impressive reception room, leisure area, modern bespoke kitchen/dining room and a wonderful garden.

Chruszczyk endorsed the International Design & Architecture Awards, stating: “I think the ID&A Awards is very important as recognition of talent and achievement for future of our business.” As a strong project in the Residential £5 million Plus Award, design et al were delighted to see Darma compete in the Awards. The event has become an important date on the calendar for designers across the globe. Darma can reveal that the company is currently focusing their projects in the UK’s capital, where the design firm is working on several of residential projects across central London. Chruszczyk added that they are planning to expand and oversee the launch of a new business venture: “For next twelve months, we are planning to grow the business and we have plans to lunch our own furniture range, which will include soft furniture.” Established in 1999, Darma has endured outstanding success. Today, the Londonbased company now consists of over 30 specialist and experienced craftspeople. Renowned for their high quality and meticulous approach, design et al look forward to future projects from Darma.

“ Twilight is a powerful performance cruising yacht with a stunning open plan, split level living area. The upper saloon offers an uninterrupted panoramic view.. ”

The first Oyster 125 Flybridge, Twilight is a powerful performance cruising yacht with a stunning open plan, split level living area. The upper saloon offers an uninterrupted panoramic view. The yacht was commissioned to represent the very latest in global performance cruising. Capable of ocean passages with good performance, but nevertheless having large volume, this yacht is a very good cruising boat. At the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014, Oyster Yachts was successfully shortlisted with Twilight for the Sailing Yacht Award. With a view to series production, Oyster Yachts brought together one of the best teams of internationally recognised designers, engineers and consultants to research every aspect of the overall design concept, structural specification, engineering and interior design. For over two years this team, including Dubois Naval Architects and RMK Marine, optimised the Oyster 125. This huge input of expertise, goes way beyond that invested by any individual purchaser due to both time and cost. This significant investment has created a truly class leading superyacht. RMK Marine delivered the OYSTER 125 Flybridge version to the Client of Oyster Marine in the beginning of May 2013. The yacht is packed with domestic systems and carries a full range of hotel equipment contained in the engine room. Superyacht quality suppliers were used in the build of this yacht, such as the air conditioning plant supplied by Dometic, Galley equipment by Miele, Sewage treatment plant by Ecomar, and marine fridges by Penquin. In comparison with other typical Dubois designed sailing super yachts, all domestic related equipment, with the exception of the galley fridge compressors and the boilers is located in the engine room in addition to the normal ship systems, such as the fire and bilge, fuel systems, etc. To fit all this equipment into the engine room has been a challenge and this could only be achieved by full 3D modelling of all equipment and pipelines. The drive system of the Oyster 125 is common to similar systems found on other Super yachts and is provided by a Caterpillar C18 engine and a Hundestedt four bladed propeller system. “A flybridge yacht at 125 feet (38m) is new to the design world”, comments Ed Dubois,

Founder of Dubois Naval Architects. “The flybridge offers excellent visibility when sailing the yacht and a private area when not sailing, i.e. when at anchor. The saloon area is very large and one could be forgiven for thinking one was stepping on board a much larger yacht. The composite construction has been very well executed and all in all we are delighted with the result.” This exceptional Oyster superyacht offers accommodation usually associated with 50 metre plus designs. Ed continues: “Our office has now designed many yachts of this size and it is from this base that Oyster approached us for the design of the Oyster 125. The challenge was to allow the flybridge to offer both the benefits but not detract from the overall appearance of the yacht. We hope we have achieved this.” From the outset the Oyster Marine Interior Design Team’s aim was to style a classic teak interior, which would be comfortable and easy to live with for long distance cruising or simply partying at the dock, and which would reflect the owners long standing history with Oyster as its founder and his early preferences with a whole range of classic smaller Oyster yachts owned by him during the last 20 years. Given the history of the Owner with Oyster, a focus on practicality and seamanship and a ‘yacht designed by sailors for sailors’ was essential. Joinery detailing had to include practical handholds and soft radiused corners, function as always would be paramount as it is on all Oyster yachts. It was a pleasure for the team to work with Dick Young, employed by the Owner to complement the Oyster team’s work, and who added contrasting oak, soft fabric panels and enhancements to the interior layout. Crew accommodation would follow the general colour theme of the guest areas, however floor and worktop colour and material choices would be lead by the need for ease of maintenance and practicality. The interior design process ran concurrently with the structural and engineering aspects of the design, at all times the need for ease of access to all systems throughout the yacht was paramount. This mixture of engineering effort by RMK Marine and Oyster together with Naval Architecture by Dubois culminated in a performance Super Yacht – The Oyster 125 Flybridge.

“ Zahraa has a muscular exterior, with classic and captivating external lines – in line with the values of Admiral Tecnomar. She also features unique space optimisation for a 30-metre yacht, charming lines, sophisticated interiors and stunning lighting system. ”

Launched by the Italian ship builder Admiral Tecnomar – The Italian Sea Group, Zahraa is a sleek 30-metre superyacht from the Tecnomar Nadara range. She is designed exclusively by Tecnomar Centro Stile and features highly personalised specifications from top to bottom. On the 9th May 2014 at London’s prestigious Hurlingham Club, Tecnomar’s Nadara 30 Zahraa was an excellent competitor in the Power Yacht over 30m Award at the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014. Admiral Tecnomar’s other outstanding yacht, Cacos V was the winner of this category. With a unique ambience, Zahraa is a standout yacht in her class. The new luscious bronze hull provides a sportive look, but still retains luxury like no other. She features lowered bulwarks and the extra-large windows, which allows maximum natural light in the main deck and all Guests’ cabins. Zahraa has a muscular exterior, with classic and captivating external lines – in line with the values of Admiral Tecnomar. She also features unique space optimisation for a 30metre yacht, charming lines, sophisticated interiors and stunning lighting system. The main aft deck features an al fresco dining area, which is conveniently designed close to the large aft swimming platform. The fore deck is the perfect sunbathing area where guests can relax on large sun pads around a luxurious Jacuzzi. The impressive exterior deck space allows guests enjoy the sea breeze air in pure relaxation, without compromising inter space. With two double guest cabins, one VIP and the Owner’s suite aft on the lower deck, Zahraa can accommodate up to 8 guests. The sleeping quarters boast immense quality – all of the guest suites have modern and warm design schemes, which compliment Zahraa’s bold personality. The Owner’s wishes were straightforward and meticulous. He desired an elegant yacht that was contemporary, but not too modern, as he expressed a particular desire for classic elements. The interior features a warm and welcoming design scheme with large open spaces – an area where Admiral Tecnomar have triumphed. The Owner asked for ultimate comfort especially in the saloon, where large bespoke sofas are set on either side - an area the Owner uses frequently for

business. In the saloon, there is also a bar in backlit onyx, a huge seating area and, perhaps crucially and somewhat remarkably, noise is non-existent. Federica Lo Franco of Admiral Tecnomar, added: “The brief for comfort took precedence for the client over any other need.” Zahraa has a wealth of standout features, however when asked of her favourite aspect, it seemed clear Federica believes it is her overall versatility. “The surprisingly spacious outdoor areas for relaxing and conviviality; the cozy and comfortable main saloon featuring a glamorous bar corner in backlighted onyx, the two modern design leather sofas and the full beam Owner’s cabin. Although the Nadara 30 Zahraa was not the eventual winner of the Power Yacht over 30m Award at the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2014, she was an excellent project along with the winner of the Award, Cacos V – the other outstanding superyacht from Admiral Tecnomar – The Italian Sea Group. Speaking to design et al at the Awards Ceremony on the 9th May, Federica Lo Franco added that the IY&A Awards recognise excellent achievement in the design industry: “We strongly believe and invest in design. Our shipyard has an in-house Centro Stile with more of 10 designers at an Owner’s disposal - the International Yacht & Aviation Awards represent an important achievement for designers. We hope to have a new 145m project listed here next year!” Zahraa is a beautiful example of a yacht with traditional and classical features. Her interior has a contemporary ambiance, which provides an insight into the potential future design of superyachts. Lead by Giovanni Costantino, Admiral Tecnomar – The Italian Sea Group is an internationally renowned shipyard, which invests heavily in design, technology, research and development. The Group represents two fleets: the Tecnomar fleet and the Admiral fleet. Both have different values that add a new dimension to the Admiral Tecnomar – The Italian Sea Group. The Admiral fleet has an elegant and prestigious tradition, whereby the Tecnomar Fleet brings a sportive performance and technology with no compromise.

The lounge is designed by the

Terminal 2, with a total area of 22,000 square feet. The design project for the United Club and United Global First Lounge at Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 2 began with a clear focus: to creatively and responsibly deliver distinctive, stylish and state-of-the-art airport lounges”. The architect approached the project as a hospitality assignment, designing a series of spaces that offer customers many opportunities to feel at home while travelling by creating distinct and comfortable spaces. Using timepieces throughout to represent detail and precision, the lounges are shaped into three zones; the United Club, which includes signature furniture pieces, vintage aviation artwork and sculpted organic

renowned architect, Ricky Liu, and represents a nation with exquisitely fine culture. The façade of ‘Plum Garden’ has a “Moon Gate”, transformed from traditional circular shape into an oblong gate that looks like a peach (Tao) pronounced homophonically as ‘Taoyuan’ where the Lounge is located. The massive painting “Jade Mountain in a Sea of Clouds” of Master Junbi HUANG as well as the caisson ceiling elevate the exuberance and importance of the reception lobby. Ricky Liu outlines six main themes that illustrates the main conceptualisation of the design and the goal of the implementation: 1. Boundless Presentation – Promoting Chinese Heritage with an accent of Taiwanese culture to the world. 2. Heart-warming Hospitality – Marketing

installations and private phone booths; Shower Suites, featuring high-end spaquality shower and restroom facilities; and the Global First Lounge. With unobstructed views of the tarmac, the lounge culminates in a modern English Tea Lounge with a replica Big Ben-style clock and a wine room. www.scb.com

SR Technics Shortlisted in the Private Jet Concept Design Award design et al are delighted to announce SR Technics as a shortlisted company in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. Created by Eric JAN, Head of Interior Design at SR Technics, ‘Innovative Cabin Solution’ will compete for the Private Jet Concept Design Award. The aviation industry has been conservative in the modernisation of private aircraft design. From the organisation of space through to the construction of the interior, VIP aircraft have traditionally been set up in

a standard layout. SR Technics have created a layout and concept that enables owners to make 100 per cent use of the usable space, 100 per cent of the time. This product brings together advanced smart solutions that reconsider traditional layouts to enable optimisation and flexibility of space; turning the ordinary into extraordinary. SR Technics’ highly competitive pricing and significant reduction in the green completion time, by up to a third compared to the industry norm, the new cabin solution offers value that has not been seen in the industry to date. It is time to rethink narrow- body interiors as they are not suited to today’s needs. www.srtechnics.com

Shortlisted: Peugeot Design Lab to Compete for the Private Jet Concept Design Award in the IY&A Awards 2015 design et al are delighted to announce shortlist success for Peugeot Design Lab in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. The innovative design is highlighted by a strong and distinctive visual identity. The HX1 jet concept is notable for its sleek body profile, terminating in the jet fighter inspired integration of the turbines. Continuing the theme, the tail plane is divided into V-tail stabilisers, mounted at 45°, which creates a unique signature in this segment of the jet. Integrated into the leading edges of the wings are powerful, state of the art LED lighting systems. The lightweight interior was created with luxury and optimised ergonomics in mind. With a modular design and intelligent seating system, it is possible to adapt the interior to comfortably accommodate 14 business class passengers or create an 8 seat VIP lounge. www.peugeotdesignlab.com

Acumen Design Associates Shortlisted for the Concept Cabin Award with Viva – a new business class seating concept Acumen Design Associates has achieved further shortlist success once again in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. The new business class seating concept, Viva will compete in the Concept Cabin category. Viva is a patented, high-density, lay-flat, all-aisle-access business class seat-layout designed exclusively by Acumen. The design combines in-line and angled seats to give an unrivalled density and passenger offer. As a prominent consultancy in the premium aircraft interiors industry, Acumen have designed many cabin interior products for airlines and manufacturers alike. With a thorough knowledge of the opportunities for innovation within the existing marketplace, “Viva” was designed in-house as a speculative project to the following brief: to create the most space-efficient lay-flat business class cabin with individual aisle access for every passenger, whilst maintaining a truly premium seat offer. A high density product means more passengers, so the design had to be lightweight in order to counter the increased weight. From a passenger standpoint, it was important to deliver class-leading space, with the high-end, yet simple and intuitive amenities. Lastly, in order to be commercially flexible, the underlying layout and structure needed to be adaptable enough to cater for every wide body air-frame type, and be easily customisable for the airline. acumen-da.com

Esenyacht Shortlisted for the Sailing Yacht over 30 metres Award in the IY&A Awards 2015 Esenyacht have been successfully shortlisted for the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. GLORIOUS will compete for the Sailing Yacht over 30 metres Award. GLORIOUS is a magnificent cruising ketch for 8 guests boasting sumptuous interiors characterised by exquisite workmanship in

wood and marble. The design brief was to create a comfortable warm water cruiser that combines a modern exterior with a warm, hospitable interior. She also needed to be easy to manage with a versatile sail plan that could be managed by a small crew. The owner wanted a more traditional interior than the exterior might suggest, with soft wood tones offset by pale fabrics to create interiors that would be cool and bright by day, and warm and welcoming after dark. Subtle lighting and high-gloss woodwork were also to be used to create a feeling of sensual luxury. The owner also wanted

to make the most of the craftsmanship available at Esenyacht across the full range of natural materials and specified the use of high-quality detailing to enhance the classical ambiance down below. As a sailing yacht the external areas were particularly important. Here the owner sought a number of areas suited for different needs, ranging from a protected space at the main deck level to a spacious area uncluttered by sail controls where he and his guests could relax when both at sea and in harbour. www.esenyacht.com
