The Winner’s Issue is always an exciting issue, as projects are revealed and we get the chance to take a closer a look at some of the winning schemes from this year’s International Design & Architecture Awards. For me this is made all the more interesting this year by the sheer scope and diversity of the selected winning projects: from Belgravia townhouses to Australian beach houses and contemporary design schemes in Indonesia to more traditional projects in the U.K.

from The International Product Awards as voted for by yourselves, readers and industry professionals, which are a great mix of innovation and style.

We have also taken a closer look at winners

Some good news for you too - from next month you will receive two magazines design et al and Luxe et al as a separate issue, rather than a back to back title. This means two magazines for the cost of one, but more than this it means more innovation, design news, direction and industry insights into the super yacht and aviation world as well as the interior design sector. Until next month

As a modern property with cool lines, this Palm Beach retreat has been transformed into a contemporary and comfortable vacation home. Undertaken by Florida-based Allison Paladino Interior Design, this is an example of utilising a creative touch to produce a groundbreaking project. Rewarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, Allison Paladino claimed the Living Space Award for North / South America with this Palm Beach property. To achieve the wishes of the owners for this contemporary project, Allison set out to design crisp clean lines and warm transitional style all while staying practical. By taking the original floor plan from chopped up and dated to a redesign of open, informal spaces without corridors or hallways, Allison has created a home where families could all be together.

“ To achieve the wishes of the owners for this contemporary project, Allison set out to design crisp clean lines and warm transitional style all while staying practical ”

Wood-accented armchairs from Carriage House and Holly Hunt’s round walnut occasional table highlight the living room’s neutral palette, and shape the perfect conversation grouping to relax in and enjoy music played from the grand piano. Neutral soft colours flow through the house – from the soft greys in the dining room to the cream decor in the living room, highlighting the clients’ colorful modern art collection. This flowing theme continues in the spainspired master bath fitted with a custom banquette, cushioned in gray faux cashmere, providing the perfect place to relax and regroup. The pristine living room is centered by Nancy Corzine’s glass-top cocktail table. Donghia’s Murano glass lamps lend a touch of sparkle and cast light upon Allison Paladino’s custom-designed rug. The wool loop and silk design gives a subtle pattern, texture and immense luxury. In the family room, the Donghia sectional sofa clad in velvet sunbrella fabric, invites a perfect view of ‘Midnight’, an oil painting by Joseph Steiret. The family room backs up to the kitchen and breakfast room, which creates an open space where the family can spend quality time.

The furnishings throughout the home have transitional lines to add a warm and a cosy feeling while retaining a sophisticated atmosphere. This 8,000 sq ft contemporary vision lies juxtaposed to the more traditional Mediterranean villas in the area. This makes for an extremely creative and out-of-thebox property. The open floor plans of the common spaces are threaded together with a warm neutral tactile palette that gives a great backdrop to the clients’ dramatic art collection. As a great house for this family with 3 children, there is plenty of space to entertain. The master bedroom suite including a gym, large dressing area, bedroom and bath have a riffcut pearlized oak that creates warm ambience. Every space has wonderful views of the zen like pool area. Four guest suites separated from the main living areas are private and allow guests to hideaway. As an internationally renowned company, Allison Paladino Interior Design have added to their reputation by winning the Living Space Award for North / South America at the ID&A Awards 2014. Speaking about design et al and her success at the ID&A Awards 2014, Allison added: “I have always been a huge fan of design et al magazine. Their pages are always graced with not only fabulous design projects but it is also a great resource for unique product. I’ve been lucky enough to have editorial of my work published by them. It is a huge honour to win their prestigious award for Living Space – North / South America. The global recognition and exposure that will come with this award is outstanding for any design professional.” As a highly competitive category, winning the Living Space Award for North / South America demonstrates the scale of achievement for Allison Paladino Interior Design. design et al look forward to the future projects from the US interior design company. As a beautiful and elegant residence with 15,500 square feet, Furzecroft incorporates international inspired interiors to blend both classical and contemporary elements. The vision for this magnificent project was to create a new build classical mansion with beautifully restrained luxury interiors. Exclusively designed by international renowned Consero Design, Furzecroft was a winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. The property claimed the Residential £10million plus (project value) Award at the event on 12th September in London. Set within the picturesque grounds of St. George’s Hill, Weybridge, this property has a great continuity of design throughout with little compromise given the large proportions.

“ The vision for this magnificent project was to create a new build classical mansion with beautifully restrained luxury interiors. ”

The brief was to manipulate the space within the stringent planning constraints to create an elegant flow to the interiors. Much focus was placed on the proportion and architectural details of the internal space. Emma Saffin, Managing Director of Consero added: “By getting the bones of the house right so to speak, it then enabled us to focus on the other essential elements which are to be expected in such a luxury property.” As well as the usual grand entrance hall, dining room, drawing room and his and her master bedroom, Consero were also instructed to create a luxury cinema room, wine cellar, bar, swimming pool/spa and gymnasium. All of the elements required to create a multimillion-pound property. In addition, the Surrey-based company also incorporated state-of-the-art technical elements within the design, which prospective wealthy buyers would expect to see. Designed as a development project, Furzecroft did not have a specific end user in mind. This modern mansion is styled to appeal to a wide range of prospective buyers. The impact of this on the design has created a classic elegance within a modern home, which would allow those in search of a luxury property to imprint their own

personality on this mansion. An impressive achievement for Consero, is that all of these elements were executed within both budget and timeline restraints - a testing challenge, but a rewarding one too. The house has a magnificent double volume entrance hall with sweeping staircase and glass roof cupola: designed to impress. The hall provides access to the double drawing room, 18 seater dining room and kitchen and breakfast room, all overlooking the rear garden and grounds. Each of these rooms has French doors opening onto an extensive paved terrace, allowing for indoor-outdoor entertaining and dining. Winning at the ID&A Awards 2014 with this beautiful property is a fantastic achievement. Managing Director, Emma Saffin added: “Good Design needs to be celebrated! The ID&A awards are a wonderful opportunity to do this.” By winning the Award for the Residential £10million plus (project value) category, Furzecroft has truly been celebrated as an outstanding project. As a prestigious property development company, the design world eagerly anticipates upcoming projects from Consero Design. Founded by Robert Osborn, Steven Glover and Director Jason Lawrence, Consero Design is a luxury developer, project manager and design house that creates exceptional private residences in the world’s most exclusive addresses. As a multi-award winning company, Consero have a portfolio of luxury properties valued at over £1billion across prime real estate in central London and the Home Counties. At present, the Surrey-based company has £300million worth of property under construction. design et al are delighted that the ID&A Awards continue to bring the world’s best designers together under one roof year after year. As a unique and special occasion in the designer’s calendar, the ID&A Awards has expanded at an unprecedented rate since its conception in 2010. We look forward to the outstanding design and talent on display at next year’s event.

“ We believe this house really does push the boundaries to their limit and will truly make a wonderful home. Bespoke pieces of furniture, full height glass wine coolers and a tiled bathroom designed to assimilate flowing water cascading down the walls, just to name a few. ”

As a property situated on one of Belgravia’s most premium roads, 1.61 London completed this complete reconfiguration and renovation of a corner house on a quiet mews. As one of the most renowned design firms in the UK, 1.61 London has transformed an ordinary, modern, house into a beautifully designed, and detailed home.

against old. Modern influences set against 500 year old sculptures. We believe this house really does push the boundaries to their limit and will truly make a wonderful home. Bespoke pieces of furniture, full height glass wine coolers and a tiled bathroom designed to assimilate flowing water cascading down the walls, just to name a few.”

This Mews in Belgravia has been widely appraised by the design world – at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014 in September, the property received two Awards. The event, which was held at the Hurlingham Club, saw 1.61 London claim the Living Space UK Award as well as the Residential £5million plus (property value) Award.

As the winner of the Living Space UK Award and the Residential £5million plus (property value) Award, Alex was delighted with the way this project has been received. With thousands of votes cast from the world’s leading industry professionals, Alex and his team have been acknowledged for their unique and innovative approach to design.

With each area perfected individually, each section not only resonates in its own beauty, but also creates, as a whole, a harmonious, flowing design throughout. The client’s passion for collecting antiques, art, wine and sculpture only adds to the exquisite styling. The design needed to incorporate and enhance these areas by returning to what made these pieces wonderful in their time and interpreting it in a modern way. One such example was the main reception room wall. This was designed to have backlit onyx vertical sections, sitting either side of a triplet of antique mirrors, with works of art hanging from them. This area acted as the perfect juxtaposition between ancient pieces of art, beautiful in their own right, and modern design. Thus bridging two worlds with two time differences and forging them together in this new modern, harmonised design fusion. The theme developed by 1.61 London allowed to incorporate all these beautiful existing pieces with the design ebbing and flowing with impact and resonance where needed. This gave the client’s collection items a platform to take stage where needed, but where lacking, the design to steps up and influences the aesthetics. Director, Alex Christou is incredibly proud of this project. He said: “What we have outlined only scratches the surface in describing what a fantastic project this house in Belgravia is. There are stories to tell in each area of new

Speaking about the influence of the ID&A Awards, Alex added: “As in any industry, it is important for interior design houses to have a respected platform to showcase their work and to have the best of it fairly critiqued and recognized by their peers. design et al is one of these respected forums.” “Winning two Awards against such reputable competition, demonstrates the creative flair that 1.61 London instills in each project that it chooses to take on. The Awards are a celebration of a year long journey from first creative sparks to final implemented features.” “These Awards affirm that courage will triumph, the best designs are those that do not succumb to taking the easy choices. It is in innovation and making the difficult choices that people distinguish themselves.” The quality of the projects on display at the ID&A Awards this year was outstanding. As an event, which continues to expand each year, design et al hope to welcome all previous entrants, and of course new companies to the Awards in 2015. 1.61 London’s continual drive for aesthetic perfection is at the core of every project undertaken. With experience in both residential and commercial property development, the award-winning company transforms once tired spaces into the height of luxury. With meticulous care and detail, making design is not just an art, but also a science.

“ My main inspiration for the design of this house was the breathtaking unique view of the bush valley - peace and close to nature. ”

Set close to Sydney on 582 square metres of land, Hunters Hill is a beautiful duplex property situated opposite Lane Cove National Park. The property is a 4-level semiattached residence, containing 4 bedrooms, study, 2 living areas & 3.5 bathrooms.

for the Sydney-based company – the site is very steep - almost 10m difference between top and bottom. The intricate bushfire protection system in the area also contributed to an interesting design process and overall design.

Exclusively designed by Tobola Architects, this innovative project was recognised at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. In a very competitive category, Tobola were announced as the winning company in the Residential £1-2.5million (property value) Award.

Even though the property faces south, Hunters Hills is still very bright. The corridor running in the middle of the house is filled with natural light. Natural cross ventilation used in the house minimises the use of air conditioning, even during hot Australian summer.

Aneta Tobola, Director of Tobola Architects was fascinated by the spectacular views, which surround the duplex. “My main inspiration for the design of this house was the breathtaking unique view of the bush valley - peace and close to nature.”

Breathtaking bush valley views located in front of house is captured even in master bedroom located at the back of house. Almost every window frames beautiful views of bush national park.

By framing the surrounding view with large glazing in living room, Aneta has managed to capture bush views in almost every room of this house. By using Mother Nature, natural light and natural ventilation are vital themes in this project. Revealing her own personal design style, Aneta always utilises a natural touch: “In my design I use carefully what Mother Nature has given us for free – natural light and natural ventilation. In my projects I’m borrowing light, reflecting light and aim to create houses wisely.” With a wonderful glow of natural light and no dark corridors, she draws on her person style. The high ceiling in living room (almost 7m high) has added the ‘Wow’ factor to the interiors and contributed to cross ventilation throughout the entire house. Timber cladding of the elevation has been carefully studied and is a soft transition between bush located opposite and a very modern building. The vision was to create a house with a pleasant space to live in and experience surrounding nature on the daily base. The project did present a difficult challenge

BELOW: The Safari Collection by The Silk Gallery Category: Fabric

The Heron is one of the most prominent new skyscrapers in the financial heart of the City of London. As part of a large construction the main reception area was fitted with floor to ceiling White Lip and Black Lip Four Sided Crazy Pattern Mother of Pearl Wall Panels. This material gives and exquisite finish and really reflects the exclusive luxury of the building for a great first impression. The use of simple black and white colouring but with the lustre and glisten created by Mother of Pearl results in making the space feel large and open, perfect for a reception area. The Mother of Pearl is naturally and responsibly sourced to minimise impact on the environment. It is also extremely durable and wipes clean, perfect for a busy reception.

Inspiration for The Safari Collection was the result of a trip in January 2014 to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. This unique African landscape with its prodigious wildlife and unique floodplains left a lasting impression. Walking through these vast plains, the game viewing is spectacular. The designs “Elephant” and “Giraffe” attempt to show these animals

as they appeared in the wild – majestic but utterly at peace with their surroundings. The herds of Zebra roaming the land are depicted in “Stampede”. Hippos weave their way through the papyrus swamps cutting swirling trails, hence the design “Delta trail”. These waterways are home to hundreds of lilies on which brightly coloured kingfishers can often be found – hence “Water lily”. And finally, “Jungle Fern” and “Fan Palm” are reminiscent of some of the over 5000 species of flora to be found in this region.

Medusa by Alfred Johnson Category: Table MEDUSA – This bespoke biomorphic dining table pays homage to Greek mythology whilst infusing super-modern biomorphic language. Based on a request by a client for a one of kind dining table, Medusa evolved from a sketch and was developed into interconnecting fluid lines that combined the biomorphic integrity of its presence practical use. With the ever intertwining fluid shapes, each perspective of Medusa gives a new depth to its form. Manufactured in medium density fibre with a double layer of fibreglass exterior, it can be customised in colour to meet the client’s requirement. The key aspect of Medusa is its unique approach towards enhancing the dining experience and pushing the boundary between art and everyday life. Medusa as a product that has elevated the approach to furniture and modern living. The venture towards biomorphic original design intent for the Medusa Dining Table shows the translation of almost surreal conceptual language into art inspired products.

Shear Table Lamp by Bert | Frank Category: Lighting - Lamp This Shear Desk Lamp is a highly functional task lamp with styling inspiration taken from the 1930’s. The brushed finish on the inner shade produces a softened warm light. Crafted from brass and turned steel this lamp is built to outlast its owner. The Shear Table Lamp comes in Brass or Chrome, with colours options of Matte Black and Matte Old English White. An in-line switch is located on the flex. Bert Frank items are designed to oppose the throw away culture we live in today and are built to last at least as long as you will. During this time they will age and mature with you. The brass will soften and darken (unless you don’t want it to and treat it to a little polish) and any knocks or scratches it may pick up over the years will add to its story. Bert Frank take a huge amount of pride in designing and manufacturing all of their own products in house in the UK to the highest possible standard. They don’t cut corners and never sacrifice on quality. Bert Frank also offer custom colours and finishes and will even make your own designs for you.

A Splash Of Luxury by Light IQ Category: Lighting - Scheme Client wished for a fun filled space that the whole family would use. Dramatic enough to pull the children away from the TV and grown up enough for the parents to entertain. The dramatic architecture required a lighting scheme to compliment and enhance the space with enough impact to draw the family from the comfort of their main residence. The exterior lighting had to be subtle enough to sit quietly within the the forest setting, thus the idea of an Asian lantern with kinetic movement started to develop. The sculptural qualities of the build are accentuated with tiny up-lights. Linear underlighting of the exterior steps create the sensation that the pavilion ‘floats’ on the man made pond. Discrete light fittings were tucked in to the eaves to light the balconies and prevent the black mirror effect at night. The creation of the pond / mini lake was to reflect our dramatic ‘lantern’ at night reinforcing the sculptural

silhouette and the drama of the lighting scheme. Low hanging fibre optics over the pool were used with colour and a sparkle wheel. This ensures a subtle movement, which is reflected across the dark surfaces at night. Decorative glass panels are optimised by both natural light during the day and artificial light at night adding a decorative element and soft colour to the space. The volume of light required for the overall ambience was created by the introduction of a skylight set at the back of the room. This is then subtly light with LEDs at night so that it does not become too dark. The second form of ambient light was working within the structural framework of the beams. Linear LEDs were recessed between the beams. LEDs were used throughout to ensure the lighting scheme was driven by energy efficiency, drama and low maintenance. A pre set control system ensures each member of the family has their own preferred light setting, this can be controlled both internally within the building as well as from the main house.

Designed for an international company in the heart of Dubai, this boutique and chic office features a luxurious VIP area and boardroom. The suave interior is the work of the luxury interior design firm Casa Forma. This exquisite Dubai office was the winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Casa Forma added to their collection of accolades by winning the Office Category. Located on the 22nd floor on the principle Sheikh Zayed Road, this resplendent and luxurious office was completely reconfigured to incorporate over 20 staff and a luxury VIP waiting area.

“ Casa Forma as a company doesn’t have a particular design style or formula because we deliver truly bespoke design to each of our clients incorporating their lifestyle and individual personality into our interior and architectural design scheme. ”

The scheme shows international flair that incorporates accents of Middle Eastern culture and traditions. The use of reflective finishes such as mirror, glass, bronze, high gloss rosewood and ebony have a playful effect on the lighting. With beautiful views throughout the office, this really is a luxurious work setting. The versatile layout allows for free flow, but can be transformed for privacy by means of pocket doors and a secret jib door in the panelled wall, between the public and work area. This allows the space to be very open and light, with lines of sight between the different areas. All the furniture and finishes were designed by Casa Forma; to further accentuate the feeling of luxury, timber borders and bronze trims are inlaid in the stone floor and around diamond shaped mirrored wall panels. The meticulous attention to detail continues with the bespoke bronze handles and saddle stitched leather shelves. All the AV and much of the MEP has been considered, so it is incorporated into the design giving a very clean, modern and elegant solution. This office emanates luxury, practicality and functionality - the key principles behind Casa Forma’s design concept and strategy. As a prestigious honour for any interior

design company, Faiza Seth – founder and CEO of Casa Forma was delighted to compete in the ID&A Awards. Faiza said: “The awards increase awareness of quality design that has been produced over the year, and really encourages creativity and allows recognition of design talent.” She added: “The ID&A Awards are unique because the award is judged by both industry experts as well as by potential clients. The mixture of both allows the awards to recognize a firm that has both technical expertise and creativity but at the same time is commercial and appeals to their target market.” The bespoke luxury, which adorns this Dubai office, is a prime example of innovation at its best. As the winner of the Office Award at the ID&A Awards 2014, we hope to see more outstanding projects from Casa Forma at the ceremony in 2015. With a busy year ahead, the London-based company is currently working on in excess of 20 projects both within the UK and Internationally. Faiza revealed that they are set to design a five-star hotel close to the main financial centre of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as well as a sea front penthouse in Lagos. Casa Forma are also strengthening their position in India working on a host of new projects. Offering an international luxury design service for residential, commercial and hospitality properties, Casa Forma have a world-class team from the fields of decorative and architectural design. Speaking to design et al about her own personal style, Faiza said: “My personal style is contemporary classic with a touch of Art Deco which I feel is sophisticated and timeless.” However, she added: “Casa Forma as a company doesn’t have a particular design style or formula because we deliver truly bespoke design to each of our clients incorporating their lifestyle, and individual personality into our interior and architectural design scheme. One of our main focuses is to incorporate timelessness and luxury into each of our designs and for Casa Forma, luxury isn’t about the label or price tag - it’s about beauty, craftsmanship, and quality.”

“ Working with some of our favourite Artisans allowed us to design beautiful bespoke pieces, specifically the marble and metal inlaid floor in the entrance hall is our own design, the pattern is unique and personal to us and this is very satisfying.. ”

Experienced interior designer, Deborah Bass, established Base Interior in 2010 to provide clients with a creative and professional interior design service. At the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014 this service was recognised with the team taking home the Residential £1-2.5 Million Award for the Interior Design of their project, Orchard Court. Deborah comments: “Base Interior is quite a young interior design practice so winning the ID&A award was a fantastic boost for our team. We are using the winning logo on our website and marketing literature with pride.”

interior of his room to become a warm, gentleman’s study space with a singularly ‘British’ feel.

The winning project, a lateral 4000 sq.ft central London apartment, required complete internal renovation to create a unique family home for the overseas client. The client’s aim for this, one of their many overseas homes, was to create a family home which was very much ‘of its place’. They wanted to feel that it was a true London home and this led the interior design. A business man and his wife, along with their 9 year old son, would be using the apartment. As well as space for entertaining friends and guests, it was important to have staff facilities.

With the ‘London’ brief in mind, Base Interior were inspired to highlight and incorporate Art Deco features into bespoke treasures such as the reception room vitrines and mirrors. Similarly, working with ‘based upon’ to create bespoke artwork pieces with a London ‘edge’ was fantastic for the team, the process of choosing the patina, curve and shades to compliment the interior proving very successful.

“The clients are very kind and generous”, Deborah remarks. “It became evident to us that the most important element of the owner’s life were his family and friends and we tried to reflect this with the interior.” The apartment, in its previous state, was very dilapidated and the rooms and corridors gave the feel of a rabbit warren. In allowing Base Interior to devise a new space plan the team created a simplified layout with interconnecting spaces and wide corridors. The final space plan composed of entrance hall; corridors; cinema room/ study; reception room; dining room; kitchen, master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe; three further bedrooms each with en-suite shower rooms; utility room; two staff bedrooms; a staff bathroom and plant room. The master bedroom, complete with ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardobe, was designed to be as tranquil as possible to create a spa-like environment after a long exhausting trip – to be able to black the bedrooms out to allow the residents to sleep peacefully was an important factor. There was also a possibility that the son would eventually study in London so this led the

For the interior the design team chose to showcase some of London’s Artisans, creating a warm family home that would be welcoming and inviting. Deborah comments: “Working with some of our favourite Artisans allowed us to design beautiful bespoke pieces, specifically the marble and metal inlaid floor in the entrance hall is our own design, the pattern is unique and personal to us and this is very satisfying.”

A key aspect of the project was to bring light into the entrance hall. The natural light from the long elevation of deco sash windows floods the apartment and the interconnecting spaces take advantage of this. The new space plan that was devised and the furniture arrangement allow the apartment to flow and enhance the sense of space. The view from the property is outstanding, overlooking one of London’s finest garden squares, the idea of framing this view and bringing some organic lines into the interior was again a great source of inspiration. The design works well because the apartment is inviting. Sometimes a newly renovated apartment with beautiful interiors can be intimidating but knowing this was to be used by a family and its guests, Base Interior were careful to avoid creating a gallery and instead created a home. Reflecting on the success of this project, Deborah comments: “Working with the owners of 21 Orchard Court was so enjoyable, to gain input from all the family and to be able to tailor the property to their exact needs resulted in a beautiful and practical home. Returning to the apartment when the family is in residence and seeing them enjoy their home is the most satisfying experience and makes the interior design and project coordination role truly rewarding.”

“ The design firm’s vast experience in both residential and commercial projects in and around Asia has indicated that design boundaries are only limited by the human imagination. ”

Driven by the passion and desire to excite the sensory experience of the human emotion, Genius Loci was born in 2002 with a young but experienced team dedicated to extracting the inspiration from the “Genius Loci” of every individual space it has to offer. Unique to this philosophy, the meaning of design stretches far beyond just providing the ultimate design solution, but also embraces the element of experience within each space. The design firm’s vast experience in both residential and commercial projects in and around Asia has indicated that design boundaries are only limited by the human imagination.

from space to space, reflecting the experience moving almost like a gentle breeze. The overlapping of spaces and voids allows cross ventilation through convection without much need for mechanical help.

It is with this formula that the firm set about designing their project, H Residence, proud winner of the Residential £5 Million Plus (Project Value) Award at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Alex Bayusaputro and Benjamin Kim, Genius Loci’s Creative Directors, were delighted to be collecting the award presented to them at the Hurlingham Club, London in September. Benjamin comments: “The Awards are a showcase and a platform to allow design to transcend to areas only the mind can imagine”. Alex agrees: “It allows an opportunity to stretch and share the boundaries of design across the globe”.

The pool was kept at the back of the property. With well-manicured trees and lush tropical greens, this section of the villa unfolds for an experience closely related to nature. Deep pockets of covered walkways lead onto the next wing which houses the family and the gym. This allowed full inward and very private views back into the pool area, enjoying the openness and relationship with nature. Privacy was important to the owners, as they entertained often. Members of the family wanted to have enough pockets of spaces to stay private, without the guest wandering into the wrong quarters. Even granny has private living quarters within her bedroom suite and her very own private meditation garden.

The project, H Residence, is situated in East Java Indonesia, Sidoarjo. The owner and family, who were very well travelled, knew the kind of environment they wanted to call home. This villa is a modern yet tropical environment and the key challenge was how to produce a large property and transform it into a more “human” and liveable space. In the vast 40,000 sq.ft built up area, the journey begins with a formal drop off area. A chauffer provides a celebrity welcome, whisking away the owner’s car and taking it to the basement garage. The walls of the residence are cladded with large panels of travertine marble and matched with a pair of majestic hand-crafted textured copper cladded doors, echoing a touch of local Indonesian artistry culture. Upon entering the property, details start to unfold through a screen, with a formal and grand hall awaiting the guest. Set in a double volume space, the grand hall provides a sense of awe and timber lattice heightens the experience of the volume, filling the space with warm smells of natural timber. Minimalist marble was opted for to keep the space feeling open; slowly extending outwards towards the back of the house, where the swimming pool is located. Most materials and furniture are of a light palette and in sync. The soft colour flows

The tropical weather attributed to a large patio and covered link ways. These further blurred the boundaries between the interior and exterior spaces, something which is evident as one is seated in the grand hall, simultaneously able to experience the cool colours of the pool and the lush tropical garden, with the setting sun as its backdrop.

The second level boasts the owner and immediate family’s private pad. Each of the suites gives an immense amount of privacy and communal space at the same time. Often with a large property, spaces are huge and not of an intimate scale. This Villa proves that large villas can still have heart-warming nooks and hide-aways. The architecture can be seen fully integrated and woven into the interior spaces. A natural play of lights and material textures reflect the different moods of the villa. Screens are used in large quantities to shield away the sun’s glare whilst still letting soft light in. All in all, the project needed to be simple and opulent but with subtle details. Whilst tropical, many of the private spaces are intimately dressed up, which is in contrast with the heavier local tropical concepts widely seen in this region. In the span of 12 years, Genius Loci have placed their flags with projects in cities such as Malaysia, Surabaya, Bali, Jakarta, Beijing, Shanghai and Cambodia. The design direction of the firm remains focused on exploiting the fullest potential “Genius Loci” of every space, while achieving the clients’ needs and desires. The team is confident that its design is able to speak for itself.

Completed in Spring 2013, this Victorian Villa by Cochrane Design was voted as the winner of the Bathroom Award in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Sean Cochrane, who has now achieved success at the Design Awards for four consecutive years, comments on their significance within the industry: “The ID&A awards are highly important in promoting a designer’s talents. Recognition and respect is gained from peers and this type of exposure opens doors to a wide and strong client base.” This award-winning bathroom is part of a Victorian Villa situated on Clapham common for which Sean redesigned all 9,500 sq.ft of the property. Within this the client requested his and hers dressing rooms and bathrooms.

“ The brief for this room that belongs to the lady of the house was that it had to have an ‘Effortless Elegance’. Timeless elegance envelopes you as you walk through the mirrored double height doors and the palette is welcoming and luxurious.. ”

Sean describes his signature style as “a seamless blend between the traditional and the contemporary, creating a crisp comfort.” He continues: “My work and design style is very much influenced by my travels in Asia and particularly South Africa, where I lived for two years.” The brief for this room that belongs to the lady of the house was that it had to have an ‘Effortless Elegance’. Timeless elegance envelopes you as you walk through the mirrored double height doors and the palette is welcoming and luxurious. Sean has brought a thoughtful approach to the functional use of the space with particular attention paid to the mood that this room evokes. He believes that the direction design is moving towards is “functionality wrapped in beautiful design”. From the marble floor beneath your feet to the crystal chandelier, you are immediately aware of the exceptional craftsmanship and materials that have been carefully selected to create this room. The stunning symmetry on three sides comes from the clever use of practical and beautiful fixtures and fittings. They have been applied to great effect creating a composition of order and calm in the room. Through the large sash window the view over the leafy common can be enjoyed from the marble bath. Light is bounced around using three large mirrors seamlessly inset into the panelling. The natural light brings out the luminous quality of the marble that has

The Winners Issue 2014.indb 91

been used on the counter, splash back, bath, shower and floor; all stunning examples of a classic material, Carrara marble, being applied in a practical and beautiful way. The deep buttoned circular seat in the centre of the room transforms the space by encouraging you to stop and be still outside the traditional use of a bathroom. Whether to reflect or pamper one’s self, the seat typifies the luxury of its surroundings. All the cabinetry, stonework and furniture within this room has been specifically commissioned and designed by Sean. The exacting standards applied here are Cochrane Design’s trademark and with this bathroom you are experiencing luxury that has been thoughtfully considered in every detail. The design and execution of this bathroom evokes permanence and quality, making this a bathroom with style and substance. Sean Cochrane founded his leading design practice in 2004, specialising in exclusive properties and dealing with all aspects of architecture, co-ordination, construction, interior design and dressing. Interestingly, Sean had an unsual route into interior design and architecture. “My first business, a tree surgery practice, brought me into the world of landscape designers and architects”, he explains. “This fostered in me an appreciation of how external and internal space can enhance living which is evident in many of my current projects. I then established a real estate company which successfully targeted simple and cost-effective renovations of flats in London. This gave me invaluable experience of working with planners, contractors, architects and other building professionals, and gave rise to a detailed understanding of project logistics. It also created a vast database of professional contacts which I still draw on today.” Since founding the company 10 years ago, Cochrane Design has grown from strength to strength, with the design practice currently working on a number of large projects in Mayfair, including a complete reconfiguration and refurbishment of a substantial town house in a classic, timeless style with a hint of art deco. Additionally the company is working on phase two of a large luxurious hotel refurbishment in Ibiza and are at the finishing stages of the complete restoration of a majestic Victorian family home in Essex.

Woadden Nash was set up in 2011 bringing together the skills and experience of its directors Sarah Woadden and Chris Nash to create a highly experienced team of professionals collectively able to offer the best service to the interiors market. Three years later their teams and services have expanded further, allowing them to have the in-house skills to deliver their highest service yet. Their designs have received much praise this past year, with their projects Lagoon and Evening Hill both successfully shortlisted in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Evening Hill went on to win the award in the Residential £10 Million Plus (Property Value) category.

“ We were appointed at the very start to work alongside the build team to fully specify and detail all aspects of this family home. The brief was to create a truly bespoke design that reflected the personality and lifestyle of this busy young family. ”

A magnificent fully bespoke luxury family home which benefits from direct and private water frontage, Evening Hill is located in Poole, Dorset. Director Sarah Woadden explains: “We were appointed at the very start to work alongside the build team to fully specify and detail all aspects of this family home. The brief was to create a truly bespoke design that reflected the personality and lifestyle of this busy young family.” The house had to provide many solutions for the clients. As well as quality daily living spaces, they had a formal dining and drawing room which was designed to offer a more luxurious and decadent feel for occasional use. The entire lower ground floor was to be used for recreation and relaxation which was achieved with a stunning indoor pool, gym, sauna, cinema, bar, and games room. The mood was changed dramatically with a change of pallete here to achieve a moody and relaxing atmosphere, commensurate with its purpose. The six bedroom suites were individually approached, with each child’s room carefully reflecting the personality of its owner. The master suite was designed to be a haven away from daily life (and the kids!). This was achieved with a private sitting area complete with tunnel fire, affording a connection through to the master bathroom, a key feature of which was the bespoke mirror mosaics. One of Woadden Nash’s favourite aspects of the project is the formal sitting and dining room. The interconnection of the two spaces works very well hidden in part by bespoke glass and metal frames, which provide both privacy and a visual connection of the two sides of this room. The selection of colours and textures have achieved a design that will

serve the clients for many years. Looking at this award-winning project, Woadden Nash have certainly met their brief to achieve a luxury house brimming with personality and character, providing an exciting and supremely comfortable home for a busy modern family. On their project’s success at the International Design & Architecture Awards Ceremony 2014, held at the prestigious Hurlingham Club in London, Sarah comments: “It is wonderful to celebrate and congratulate the work and efforts of individuals and companies who are seeking to move design forward. It is always an amazing feeling to be nominated for an award and even better when you pick up first prize!” What is evident from this project is Woadden Nash’s passion for providing exquisite, truly bespoke interior design and outstanding service for their clients. The team offer a comprehensive interior architecture and design consultation service, from brief through conception to finishes and execution, working closely alongside clients in order to realise their dream spaces in the residential, commercial, retail or hospitality sectors. Through their talented and experienced mix of interior architects, technicians and designers they convey their designs using mood boards, samples, 3D models, CGI’s and detailed drawings in order to allow for clarity between the team and the clients and seamless integration with contractors. The team are not only an interior architecture and design service, but they also provide dressing and styling, whether the client wants a fresh look on an existing or new property, wants to fully furnish a holiday home, or is a developer wanting to maximise the impact on a show home. Woadden Nash are also working alongside some of the best craftspeople both locally and throughout Europe to design and manufacture bespoke furniture and cabinetry, unique to their client’s scheme and concept. This can range from handmade bespoke sofas and sideboards that enhance a living space, through to metamorphic, multifunctional furniture that can blur the lines of spatial design. Much more than just an interior design company, Woadden Nash’s fresh approach delivers a fully coordinated service, bringing together highly skilled, experienced experts to create a luxury environment in their client’s own true style.

Built between 1824 and 1836, Myddelton Square is one of Islington’s oldest and most heritage rich garden squares, steeped in history and forming an integral part of the New River Estate which brought fresh water to the capital. It is also where you will find G&T London’s award-winning project, 58 Myddleton Square, which took home the Regeneration Award at the fifth annual International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Gal Adir, who founded the company with Tania Adir, comments on their success: “The awards celebrate all that is good about the built environment, rewarding outstanding design that stands out and exceeds expectations - something that G&T London strives to do with all of its projects. The unique judging format means that work is presented to and judged by a wider audience who are not necessarily industry experts, which we feel is important as it offers a more balanced perspective.”

“ The project called for the total restoration of a Georgian townhouse, transformed to create an opulent family residence which combines period elegance with contemporary features. ”

The project called for the total restoration of a Georgian townhouse, transformed to create an opulent family residence which combines period elegance with contemporary features. G&T London sought to return this magnificent Georgian townhouse back to its former glory and raise the bar for luxury living in Islington. The largest and last house to be built on the square in 1836, number 58 had since been divided up into apartments before being used as a commercial office, gradually deteriorating into a state of disrepair. G&T London has worked with Coffey Architects to create a design which sympathetically respects the traditional Georgian proportions, while also recognising the ways in which space should be structured by the needs and desires of modern life. The addition of modern features and contemporary technology results in a design that seamlessly bridges past and present. G&T London wanted to return the house to its original use as a single family residence, retaining its period features whist adding contemporary design elements, technology and the finest globally sourced materials. Detailing and exceptional levels of fit and finish were central to the design brief. To achieve this, G&T London assembled an expert team of refurbishment specialists, including carpenters, decorators and ironmongers to breathe new life into the house. Original sash windows, ornate

fireplaces, intricate cornicing, decorative cast iron railings and historic chimney pieces were painstakingly restored to the highest level of craftsmanship. The subdivided rooms of the property were opened up, while the rear of the house has been transformed by a carefully planned glass rear extension. G&T London also sought to dispel the myth that Georgian properties are draughty and take a long time to heat up. To achieve this, a commercial style heating and hot water system was installed, while a Savant home control system allows full control of the house’s audio, video, lighting and heating via four removable wallmounted iPads. A key aspect of the project is the ‘floating’ Swiss SkyFrame glass extension which has completely transformed the rear of the property. Due to planning restrictions, a creative design was required to extend the house in the desired way. Light now floods in at all levels, right down to the basement through the walk on glass floor in the kitchen. During the warmer months the rear sliding doors can be opened up directly onto the decking and garden, creating the perfect space to entertain and unwind. The design has also been considered with usability and flexibility in mind. Should the prospective buyer wish to, they could convert the additional living room space (currently a piano room) into another bedroom, making use of the bathroom across the hall way. G&T London also opted not to use inbuilt fixtures for the gymnasium and cinema rooms, allowing potential for these to be used as staff accommodation or home office space, utlising the separate entrance at the front of the house. 58 Myddelton Square also enjoys a garden and secure garages for parking, a combination rarely found in Zone 1 of the capital. Each and every G&T London project is uniquely exceptional, bar one common thread – they are all a product of the dynamic vision, passionate zeal and absolute refusal to settle for anything less for which the company has become renowned for. Thanks to the unbridled dedication and astute flair which G&T London founders Gal and Tania Adir apply to each of their projects, the team has built up a stunning portfolio of elegant and boldly contemporary homes; a feat not only appreciated by their clients, but also the industry at large as demonstrated with this award-winning project.

Exclusively renovated by the luxury interior design firm Boscolo, Upper Park is a Tudor style detached house with 5-bedrooms, 2500sqft of space and a south facing rear garden. Situated in Epping Forest, Essex, a complete renovation of the interior was undertaken to meet the client’s specific requirements. Upper Park was recently announced as a winning project in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. The ceremony was held at London’s Hurlingham Club on 12th September, where Boscolo claimed the Bedroom Award. The Owners of the property are active members of a spiritual movement called Radha Soami, which encourages humility throughout life. Their religious and spiritual beliefs are a core part of their daily rituals and were an important feature in the response to their brief. The clients expressed a desire for a timeless, luxurious space and a design that was sensitive to elements of their faith. The challenge for Bosoclo was to create a luxurious and elegant feel, without being ostentatious.

“ The clients expressed a desire for a timeless, luxurious space and a design that was sensitive to elements of their faith ”

The aim for the award-winning master bedroom was to create a calm tone in which Boscolo achieved particularly well. The use of a palette of warm greys combined with elements of contrasting dark wenge wood finishes added an additional layer of elegance. With spirituality and nature as a running theme, Boscolo aimed to draw aspects of this into the materials and finishes in the bedroom. The intention with the lighting layout was to create multiple layers, which offer the opportunity for different moods. As part of a well-considered lighting plan, Boscolo opted for square trim-less recessed downlights. The choice of white internal casing for the downlights further aided the requirement for a clean ceiling finish. The positioning subtly highlights key features and areas within the room. The modular contemporary built-in Presotto wardrobes with pietra silver shine handle inserts are understated yet intriguing. The textured stone handle inserts with a metallic effect, resembling lava, which features on both the wardrobes and chest of drawers, reflects the natural theme throughout the bedroom. A faux leather headboard was specified for an element of luxury. It was important that faux leather was specified as Boscolo were under strict instructions to avoid using any

fabrics and products derived from animal products due to the clients spiritual beliefs. The headboard was outlined with a wooden border, which was stained with a wenge effect finish to match the freestanding furniture. With zinc fabric for the cushions, they feature a bookmarked marble effect, tying in with natural theme and engaging with the bark-effect bedside lamps and grooved wenge bedside tables. Without compromising the integrity of the design, the aesthetic qualities of the products were in line with the spiritual beliefs of the clients. The attention to detail ensured that all items were primarily functional but also appealed to its users senses. The successful balance of tranquil colours combined with the layered lighting scheme creates a calm and relaxing ambience required of a bedroom. Winning the Award for the Bedroom category, Ravi Lakhaney – founder and principle of Boscolo was delighted with their success in the ID&A Awards 2014. As an extremely fulfilling project, he was pleased to be rewarded and hopeful that the exposure will increase the company’s reputation on an international platform. Ravi added: “This project was exciting, challenging and profoundly satisfying. It reflected the taste, lifestyle, experiences and aspirations of our clients. The details were as critical to this project as the larger canvas. This award in particular is of great significance to us as, for the first time, it has enabled us to compete at an international level. Winning this award adds further credibility to our boutique brand.” Boscolo are currently undertaking a complete refurbishment of a two-bedroom apartment in a mansion block located in St John’s Wood. Lakhaney also revealed that they are working on a Grade I Listed Edwin Lutyens house in Hampstead. This project poses a unique challenge to design a space, which works on a functional level for a modern lifestyle, whilst respecting the existing design. As a high-end architecture and interior design company, Boscolo provide a complete and tailored service, covering each and every aspect of a project. Revealing his own personal style, Lakhaney added: “High end without being ostentatious. I stay away from chintz and loud colours. My style, in fact Boscolo’s style, is all about the detail. We generally opt for an understated look and let the attention to detail speak for itself.” By claiming the Bedroom Award at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, Upper Park is an outstanding project. design et al look forward to the future projects by London-based Boscolo.
