This has to be one of my personal favourites, the annual issue of The World’s Most Glamorous Homes, now in its eighth year, gives us all the chance to look back and select our favourite projects of recent times. As always, the projects are as varied in design style as are their creators. One person’s definition of a “glamorous home” is not another’s; I personally think of a 1930’ s Mayfair townhouse, with an Art Deco inspired interior scheme, sumptuous fabrics and flooring, a distinct air of decadence and comfort combined with original features, when I think of “glamorous homes”. This era to me defines glamour, but this is of course just my personal taste. When I asked my husband the same question, he considered the question

for a few seconds before suggesting his definition was “a vast apartment, very contemporary, clean, simple, large terraces and balconies overlooking Sydney Harbour”. Clearly we are at odds over our next home then, never mind the location! With broad spectrums and ideas in mind we aim to cover a range of schemes from the contemporary urban space to the period manor house, with everything in between covered too. I love the variety and scope of schemes this year, each and every one designed by a short-listed interior designer in recent Design Awards; some are winning schemes, but all are unique and distinctly individual. I do hope that The World’s Most Glamorous Homes 2014 gives you a little inspiration, offers some escapism, and a chance perhaps to immerse yourself in a series of homes from throughout the world. Best, Joanne

Honky achieved double success in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013 with both of their winning projects located in the new Trafalgar One development, overlooking London’s most famous square. Their Lateral Apartment won the ‘Residential £2.5 - 5 Million plus’ category whilst the Penthouse Apartment was successful in the ‘Residential £10 Million plus’ award. Both apartments have been created within the shell of the historic Canadian Pacific building, directly overlooking Nelson’s Column and the National Gallery, the only residential properties in London with a Trafalgar Square address. The bespoke development, by London developer BMB, includes four lateral apartments and one duplex apartment- the Penthouse. This Penthouse apartment is set over two floors and is one of the most remarkable property locations in London, ideally located for the theatre district, opera, galleries and restaurants as well as the rest of the city.

“ unlike the Lateral apartments, the penthouse provides the ultimate party pad ”

The design consultancy, Honky, was set up in 2001 by Christopher Dezille, who has worked in interior design for over 15 years and has achieved great success in the industry. Starting with the ‘International Property Awards Best Contemporary Apartment’ in 1999, Chris added to his achievements in 2001, winning Best New Designer in Practice and Best Contemporary Residential Interior at the Design & Decoration Awards. Since 2002, Honky’s work has been published every year in the Andrew Martin Review “Featuring the World’s Leading Designers”. For this project, the design needed to give the Penthouse apartment some differentiation between the Lateral apartment downstairs. In order to achieve this, the client requested some more colour, but wanted to maintain the Honky tonal design and sophisticated colour schemes familiar in their work. Chris comments, “unlike the Lateral apartments, the penthouse provides the

30 The World’s Most Glamorous Homes

ultimate party pad”. The hallway/entrance area invites one in from direct lift arrival opening straight into the apartment. Light flow is maximized once again with large windows on both sides and a skylight atrium above the staircase. Bespoke elements in this apartment include a slatted timber partition in the hallway/ entrance area. Chris explains, “this is simply to act as a separation between entrance and formal living areas while maintaining transparency without using translucent materials.” Small gaps in-between vertical profiles filter natural light and provide visible references of the living area and exterior view as one enters the apartment from the elevator. Flashes of artificial light also filter through the tops of the profiles across the ceiling and floor on both sides. Hand picked stones line the bathrooms while hand woven carpets cover bedroom floors. Dark stained oak joinery elements and detailing run throughout the whole space with concealed, warm white lighting details. Introducing dark bronzes and tonally contrasting fabrics maintain the sophistication and elegance while visually brightening the scheme. As a duplex, the apartment includes two large reception rooms, one facing St James’ Park, the other, the kitchen/breakfast and living room, facing Trafalgar Square itself. In addition to these rooms, there is also a study area and four bedrooms. Living areas including the study area are located on the lower level while on the upper level are two bedrooms, the guest suite and the master suite. In order to fully appreciate some of the best views of London, the apartment has not one, but two terraces, one on each floor, with the south terrace boasting the best views of Trafalgar Square. With all of his projects Chris infuses creativity, professional expertise, perfection and refinement, and this award-winning penthouse is certainly no exception.

TOPOS Design Studio is an architectural boutique design firm, founded in 2005 by Alan Fan. Involved in various projects in Singapore, Dubai, China, Doha and Portugal, the studio was set up with the simple premise of achieving refined architectural and spacial expressions through modern contemporary design language. TOPOS aims to redefine spaces, forms and experiences through a philosophy of sheer timeless elegance. These unique design responses are always applied in the area of architecture, consulting and interior design. By shattering preconceived notions of standardisation and revolutionising the concept of spacial identity, TOPOS challenges the daily environment and individuality where space and form reside.

“ Adopting a stylistic and ‘nonfashionistic’ approach, every TOPOS project is unique in its characteristics and distinctiveness. ”

Adopting a stylistic and ‘non-fashionistic’ approach, every TOPOS project is unique in its characteristics and distinctiveness. Every design addresses the reactive environment by creating a distinctive aesthetic envelope that unifies the juxtaposing elements. TOPOS’ award-winning project, Sunset Residence, is a perfect example of this approach. Situated in a secluded cul-de-sac, this private family residence can be found in the fashionable area of Bukit Timah in Singapore. Winner of both the ‘Asia-Pacific Residential £1-2.5 Million’ Award and the ‘Architectural Glasshouse (over £150,000)’ Award at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013, Sunset Residence is a beautiful and understated piece of bespoke and holistic architectural design. By collaborating closely with clients, TOPOS generates authentic design solutions and artistic judgement that satisfy the distinctive needs of each project while paying attention to the details, scale and proportions of the design. This special process constantly evolves to generate a thorough design solution with strong spatial identities that meet the clients’ project needs both locally and overseas. Design Director and Founder of TOPOS, Alan Fan, summarises the design concept for Sunset Residence as: “proportioned, timeless, tailored elegance”. The quality of light and the form on the interior spaces were key to the design of this project, which is evident from the generously proportioned lounge and the double height dining area of the first floor. These grand rooms offer fantastic spaces for the family to congregate and enjoy time together. The second floor of the property is dedicated to the private realms of the users and a relaxing alternative lounge away from the main

36 The World’s Most Glamorous Homes

family area. A comprehensive aluminium louvre system, across this floor, aids in sun shading, so as to minimise air-con usage as well as to offer exclusive and spiritual privacy against the surrounding properties. The modest entrance façade gently invites you through into the stunning pool area which reveals the U-shaped plan of the building. Fan comments: “My favourite aspect of the project, which is the key feature, has to be the pool. It is the central feature of the project and can be seen from every room of the house. The U-Shape design of the building allows the pool to be extremely private.” This form, as Fan explains, allows for seclusion as well as views of the pool area from virtually every room in the two-storey house with fantastic ventilation through full height sliding louvre and glass doors. This is helped by the orientation of the residence to make full use of the day and night prevailing breeze. The simple no fuss architectural language of the house is further accentuated by a 4 tone colour palette to not only highlight the form, but also to allow the client’s stunning pieces of furniture to take centre stage. This unpretentious approach in keeping to the natural and simplistic setting of the built environment has led to a refined and elegant feel to the spaces, worthy of the esteemed client. The project has been finished beautifully, with Bianco Carrara and Molton Brown Marble used for the living, dining and kitchen areas, and bush hammered and flamed Kur Grey Granite for all outdoor and external walls. In the pool area, arguably the focal point of the entire project, a blue turquoise mosaic has been used together with Burmese Teak Timber, which can also be found throughout the bedrooms and corridors of the property. As Sunset Residence shows, TOPOS Design Studio creates architecture and interior design that challenges the imagination, taps into hidden desires and heightens aspirations within the spatial conceptual element. The TOPOS Design Team is extremely passionate about design and the creation of innovative ideas, allowing the company to expand their levels of skill and experience. They redefine spatial elements to give identity and meaning whilst enhancing the lives of their clients. Their open-ended approach demonstrates adventurous, sustainable and technological dexterity. Ultimately, their desire is to deliver a unique, elegant and timeless design through unforgettable experience, exceeding the client’s expectations.

“It is always great to be challenged with your work, and with such a large volume of space, this was one of the most interesting challenges that we have been faced with”. The challenge Karen Howes of Howes & Rigby is referring to here is St. Saviours House, winner at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013 in the eagerly anticipated ‘Residential £20 Million plus’ category.

“ It is always great to be challenged with your work, and with such a large volume of space, this was one of the most interesting challenges that we have been faced with. ”

An 11,000sqft house in the heart of Knightsbridge, this house was designed for a private client to the highest specification by design company Howes & Rigby. The company itself is a ground-breaking partnership between international awardwinning interior design practice, Taylor Howes, and leading property developers, Rigby & Rigby. The CEO of Taylor Howes, Karen Howes, and the CEO of Rigby & Rigby, Steve Rigby, both agree that this partnership offers clients unrivalled design experience. Catering for the burgeoning HNWI (high net work individual) market in London, clients will be able to entrust Howes & Rigby with every detail of their property journey, from acquisition and planning, to design and build. Each stage will be dealt with by an in-house team, from locating a suitable property, down to the plumbing and joinery, making it a unique enterprise in the London luxury market. “There is nothing better than watching the pieces of the puzzle, seen through from start to finish, coming together to create such a spectacular result”, Steve remarks. “This project was also a great chance to be able to use a large number of specialist finishes and be more experimental with our designs”. When Howes & Rigby initially acquired the Knightsbridge property for a client it was originally 8,600sqft and had been severely compromised by a somewhat haphazard conversion in the early 1990’s. The team knew, however, that it could be re-developed and totally re-designed to fulfil their client’s own specification. The property has since grown by some 3,000sqft due to the

44 The World’s Most Glamorous Homes

acquisition and excavation of a neighbouring mews house, which also provides three offstreet parking spaces. The accommodation in the mews house, that now connects to the main residence, provides three large bedroom suites and a large gymnasium in the basement, complete with interconnecting sauna, steam room, shower rooms, a separate treatment room and a juice bar. Steve explains, “for this project, the client was looking for a retreat-come-resort feel – at once opulent but also practical for a family with four children”. As such, the brief and budget were uncompromising. “The £300,000 circular glass elevator ascends to a roof terrace on the second storey, which is situated next to a fabulous teenager’s bedroom suite with a loft-like study above.” There are three further suites in the main house, including a sumptuously serene master bedroom. There are no fewer than 32 screens throughout the property including a curving ‘nine-in-one’ set up in the media room. As a full turnkey scheme, the property has been dressed down to the bed linen. Of the project, completed in October 2012, Karen comments, “we are pleased to be able to say that we completely met the client brief in keeping a calm but luxurious environment; a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle that is found in the heart of London. The client wanted a boutique hotel home in the heart of Knightsbridge and they are absolutely thrilled with the result!” For Howes & Rigby, The International Design & Architecture Awards are a great way to showcase their work as Karen explains, “it is always great to receive recognition within your industry for your work, particularly when it is something that you have worked so hard on and are very proud of. It is great for the team to know that their projects are being put forward for awards and that their passion and hard work is being acknowledged by others outside of the company”.

Situated in the heart of the beautiful Surrey countryside in Kingswood, Burford House is a six bedroom modern home designed and furnished for family living. The exquisite interior, exclusively designed by the renowned Alexander James Interiors has a perfect balance of classical and contemporary elements. This outstanding property was a strong contender for the Residential £2.5-5 million Award in the International Design and Architecture Awards 2013 at the Hurlingham Club in London. The objective for the Reading-based design practice was to specifically design and implement a complete solution for turn key family living. The client required a sophisticated and elegant scheme reminiscent of London grandeur, whilst offering appeal to each generation of the family group.

“ an outstanding example of luxurious interior design ”

Burford House carries luxurious fabrics and glossy furniture, which creates a contemporary yet opulent feel to the drawing room for formal entertaining. This is in contrast to the industrial and musical themes that inspired the children’s games room, thereby providing spaces for everybody’s enjoyment.

Burford House is an outstanding example of luxurious interior design. A family purchased this property soon after a short period of marketing with all furnishings included. The excellent portfolio demonstrated by Alexander James Interiors is down to a talented team of designers. As such, Creative Director Stacey Sibley says her design inspiration can come from something as simple as wallpaper, fabric or a lamp; however she has been attracted to one particular regional style in the United States recently, the distinctive American New England Beach style. In reference to way in which design is moving in general terms, Sibley added: “I think people are looking for comfort and practicality; it’s not just about the latest trend it’s also about longevity.”

To create character in this spacious modern house, feature wallpapers and custom modern artwork were applied to each room. An innovative feat is the way in which the approach added focal points and warmth within the grand entrance and landings; other design schemes could have so easily presented a cold and uninviting atmosphere in these areas. Each space within Burford House is adorned in bespoke pieces featuring extensive specification.

Sibley believes The International Design & Architecture Awards are a vital way of garnering recognition from the design world. “The ID&A Awards recognise achievement within our industry. Whilst acclaim and positive response from our clients is important, the ultimate accolade is the recognition that comes from those people that truly understand the challenges we all face in our work.”

The large open plan kitchen is a place for the whole family, with breakfast and dining areas and as well as a spectacular orangery – a space to enjoy the stunning garden. Perfect for summer relaxation, the garden features cushioned wicker sun loungers and a French grey wooden sun house, which sits across the luscious green lawn.

The acclaimed design practise is currently working on a large contemporary residential property in Surrey, as well as a furniture collection.

The luxurious master-bedroom suite is situated on the first floor and features its own bathroom, dressing room and private terrace. The challenging design of the master suite was given depth by the use of an eglomised mirror four-poster bedstead. Alexander James Interiors utilised a careful use of matching palettes and warm tones having to compromise on the scale of the furnishings.

52 The World’s Most Glamorous Homes

The children’s bedrooms show real personality and fun, with feminine and masculine touches from infusions of fuchsia on the soft white palette and Trompe L’oeil galvanised steel wallpaper – a design theme which Stacey Sibley, Creative Director at Alexander James Interiors believes will prove to be a key design trend in the near future.

Alexander James Interiors has worked with some of the UK’s leading property developers and has provided award winning show house interiors and furnishing solutions. With a seamless and highly personalised service, the company are renowned for designing beautiful interiors for private individuals. As demonstrated with Burford House, Alexander James Interiors will maximise the potential of a home and introduce bespoke designs which are tailored to individual requirements.

With views over London’s Hyde Park, this contemporary four bedroomed luxury penthouse apartment by LINLEY was the winner of the Residential £5 million plus category at the international Design & Architecture Awards 2013.

“ we could go that extra mile with this apartment, experiment and push boundaries with combinations of pattern, colour and texture, and we had enormous fun in doing so! ”

LINLEY had already completed two show apartments for Northacre at the Lancasters by the time they took on this project; both apartments had sold successfully, so Northacre were more flexible with this new brief and the team were encouraged to just have fun and integrate a playfulness and sophistication into the design. They created a light, liveable and comfortable space, for a modern, young audience, with a sense of fun and a love of life. The buyer would be sociable, but would also enjoy cosy, intimate evenings in: the dining room with the rock crystal chandelier is perfect for special dinners, whilst the media room, with the large sofas, and the TV incorporated within the LINLEY bespoke cabinet, caters for the perfect night in. Charlie Robertson, Director of Interior Design at LINLEY, comments, “we could go that extra mile with this apartment, experiment and push boundaries with combinations of pattern, colour and texture, and we had enormous fun in doing so!” LINLEY applied a bright and fresh colour palette throughout so that the spaces flow seamlessly; soft tones form the canvas onto which the team peppered accents of contrasting vibrant colours, all of which complement the colours of the changing seasons; the exterior playing an influential role on the interior design. “Each room boasts a unique luxurious look, from playful and sophisticated to sleek, chic and tranquil, but all timeless in style,” Charlie comments. “The apartment showcases the finest furnishings and materials to cater for the tastes and lifestyles of discerning clients. We created a nurturing home that feels safe, comfortable and easy to live in.” LINLEY could be bold and daring with this project and had fun introducing an eccentric and quirky essence to the design. The team used bright accents of colour in each room

60 The World’s Most Glamorous Homes

- in the kitchen they added a bright orange splashback to the dark wooded units and lined the back of the chairs with the same colour. In the master bedroom navy blue was chosen to outline certain features, such as the striking bed head and piping on the day beds. The glamorous bespoke bedhead in the master bedroom was designed by the team, using the finest fabrics and despite the low ceiling this worked remarkably well and is a modern take on a canopy bed. Burgundy was chosen for the dining room, and black and mustard yellow to add to the opulence of the second bedroom. LINLEY clad the stair well wall with strips of clear mirror and incorporated emerald green strips for fun and character. The team also enlarged a black and white photograph of the loggia of the Palace of Versailles to cover the entire back wall of the kitchen. This elongates the space and provides a dramatic background to the orange accents in the contemporary kitchen. Geometric patterns are seen throughout the apartment, for example the zig-zags on the bespoke chair backs in the dining room, and the maize pattern on the blinds in the media room, which work well with the faux pony hair black walls. Charlie feels that the reason this design works is because it is so unique. “It is very different to what we have done before. We had great fun working on this project and we feel that this is reflected in the design.” 2013 was the first year LINLEY entered the awards and Charlie explains why they are so important to the design company. “The International Design & Architecture Awards are important to us because they are so highly regarded in the Interior Design world; LINLEY supports high profile competitions such as this, as they encourage originality and innovation which fuels the industry and prevents stagnation. Designer Alison Paladino describes the architecture of this 1930’s Palm Beach house as “Art Modern’, with very clean lines and structure. The house dates back to 1936 but over the years it had unfortunately lost some of its original charm. “When I embarked on the project it contained lots of ‘flexi glass’ and shiny black granite floors which made it very sterile, cold and severe”, she explained. “I just didn’t think that it worked at all so it was time to rip it all out. The project was long and extensive and my aim was to warm the house up a little, soften some of the harsher lines and generally make it a little more inviting,” she explained.

“Furnishings and finishes were chosen to reflect the simple architectural lines, with pieces chosen from France, Italy, China, England and America.”

Alison worked closely with her client who she described as “the sort of client that you love to work for, a dream client that trusts you implicitly.” It was a major renovation project which involved moving the staircase - which was a huge undertaking - creating a separate study in what was part of the master bedroom, renovating all the bathrooms and the kitchen and creating the pavilion room. Alison describes her style as “clean and organic.” She has a passion for beautiful woods and keeps her schemes minimalist so that the beauty of the wood shows through. She favours simple monochromatic interiors, the deco period being her favourite as it is more classic in style than any other era. The first stage of the project was to select materials for the construction of the floors, work on the kitchen and bathroom design, move the staircase and work on the cabinetry. At this stage Alison draw up a furniture plan to ensure that all wiring would be tailored to the clients needs, with electrical access and lighting in all the right places. Once this was complete it was time to turn her attention to the furnishing and fabrics. “I

had been very much inspired by pieces that I saw in Florence several years earlier,” Alison explained. “When I told my client about al the wonderful things that I spotted there she asked me to go back and bring some over for the project. The trip was so successful in fact, that I subsequently went on shopping trips to France and England to collect seventeenth and eighteenth century pieces.” Furnishings and finishes were chosen to reflect the simple architectural lines, with pieces chosen from France, Italy, China, England and America. Although the pieces are from differing time periods, eras and cultures, Alison stresses that they were selected for their simple elegance - a fact that she feels unites them. They certainly work well together, and the eclectic feel that they bring to the scheme is welcome in such a modern house. Given this mix of new and old working along side one another, Alison has not focused the project on a specific period or style, but has concentrated the main focus on the beauty of wood. She sees this as the character and identity that she has given tot he house. Simple tactile fabrics were chosen and colour was introduced through art. She intentionally kept the palette neutral so that the art would stand out. Her client has a fantastic art collection, which Alison went through and advised on where pieces should be placed. The property horseshoes around a swimming pool and there are three guest bedrooms at the front of the house, all of which overlook the pool. However, Alison’s favourite area of the home is the indoor/ outdoor space, which incorporates a sitting area by the stairs. This area is next to the pool and although it is open on all sides, it is sheltered by a roof. In all the design scheme works extremely successfully, new life and depth has been brought into a classically beautiful framework.

The refurbishment of this Grade1-listed Manor House in Oxfordshire was completed in the summer of 2012 and was carried out by London-based interior designer, Janine Stone. The property has been sympathetically restored throughout with several state of the art additions to the existing home, blending seamlessly into the overall scheme. Originally owned by New College Oxford, this 12th Century Manor House had been extended through the centuries up to the1930’s. The Manor House gained superb recognition when it was announced as a short listed project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013 in the Residential £5 million Plus category.

“ The project flows elegantly marrying the historic parts of the house with the contemporary elements. ”

Founded in 1987, Janine Stone has created distinctive homes around the world and employs over 40 full-time professionals across architecture, interior design, build & construction management. Janine Stone has a trademark design philosophy, mixing modern with classic for a truly exquisite effect: “Elegantly crafted spaces in which to relax and live comfortably. The combination of contemporary and classic styles working in harmony to deliver an exciting and engaging aesthetic. I relish being able to transform the ordinary into something quite beautiful. Visualising the space and then imagining how it can be realised, achieving this is both satisfying and rewarding.” The brief for this stunning property was to create a new design to reinvigorate and transform the main family home whilst accommodating the very special elements of the property including a13th Century undercroft and magnificent dining hall. The scope of the project was comprehensive and involved the entire property including the outbuildings. The design has an excellent balance of retaining the historic heritage whilst incorporating cutting edge technologies. With contemporary these elements, it is still sympathetic to the original home, which blends into the fabric of this elegant country house. The contemporary classic decorative treatments given to the master suite, drawing room and bathrooms allows it to be interpreted in their individual historic attributes in a thoroughly modern way.

This Oxfordshire Manor House has an elegant symphony of design and build, working in harmony to deliver an exquisite restoration of a beautiful honey stone manor house set within a bucolic landscape. The project flows elegantly marrying the historic parts of the house with the contemporary elements and significantly improves the use of the space whilst respecting the history of the house. This was achieved by working closely with the local authority’s lead conservation officer and English Heritage to ensure a smooth transition throughout the duration of the project. Janine Stone has been able to recreate and restore this home into a sophisticated property, which is fit for the 21st Century and will endure for the future. Preferring a classical approach to design, Janine Stone also states that listening to clients is key for a timeless design: “I have a preferred style which I call contemporary classic; it’s all about living well and living comfortably in some style. But I passionately believe it is key to listen to your client and really understand how they want to live the space. Their reception to your design is paramount and successful projects make the experience so enjoyable and rewarding.” Speaking about places of inspiration for outstanding design she said: “Marrakech and Tangier for their sheer exuberance of colour and intricately designed and patterned ceramics, mosaics and tiles. Paris and London for some of the very best period furniture and key decorative pieces. Rome and Florence for their cultural riches and extraordinary architecture.” Janine stone is also fascinated by the creative history of 16th Century Florence, The Renaissance, The Medici and the world famous legacy of Michelangelo. Stone also lists the Art Deco period as one of the most creative times in modern history: “The 1920’s – 1930’s Art Deco period was an elegant era combining style, sophistication and craftsmanship with a dash of fun and verve.” The design philosophy of Janine Stone is clearly evident in this Grade I listed Manor House, combining elegant classic with state of the art technology. As a strong contender at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2013, the design industry is eagerly anticipating future projects by Janine Stone.
