THOMAS FAZIO
Dais Nagao Lead Designer/Stylist, Harley Davidson Dais “Dice” Nagao was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Moving to the US to pursue college, Dice eventually ended up at Art Center in Pasadena, California. Post-graduation he moved on to work initially for Honda R&D and eventually found himself at his dream job, Harley Davidson. Since being at Harley, Dice has worked on projects such as the Iron 883, Softail Cross Street, and Breakout Pro. Dice’s sense of design comes from his Japanese background fused with his love for west-coast custom bikes. Through his contribution of the Iron 883 bike, Dice displayed his combination of “Tokyo urban aggression” with “cali customization”. By pouring his love for custom bikes into this project, Dice created a product which gave the consumer the freedom to personalize––a “blank slate” bike. Dice’s true passion for motorcycles lies in performance. He showed this early on in his career with Harley, working hard to develop a performance based model for a discontinued line. This bike eventually went into production, sold well, and led to the team’s latest innovation. Dice’s most recent project is the 2020 Low Rider-S. An update on the classic from 1977, this bike navigates the legacy of the HD brand while adding modern technology and trends. The Low Rider-S improved upon Dice’s original performance innovation model. This bike draws from the past while adding elements of modern trends. In terms of Dice’s work, I am a big fan of his thought process, passion, and skill. I like his process of pulling from the past while adding modern innovations and trends. This is especially crucial at a company like Harley Davidson where the brand is that the forefront of the designs. I admire Dice’s passion as well. Early on in his career at HD, he worked hard to present ideas he was passionate about, and remained persistent to push things into production. Finally, I’m a fan of his skillset. I like the style in which he sketches and renders. His sketches are precise and clean yet very lively and playful.

CONVERSE
Converse is a brand that has been through the past two decades with me; like many, the iconicity of the all-star and Chuck Taylors has worked its way into being a cultural piece. Seeing how the basic everyday high-top was worn by every kid I knew in middle school now being used as a closet essential for fashionistas is truly interesting. The range in types of people who wear converse is extremely wide; the colorways and manipulation of form can provide appeal to any type of person whether that be a minimalist or an over the top street wearer. Their design direction is so eyecatching and the way they display their merchandise through graphics and video animation is phenomenal. Another element of Converse that keeps the brand on its creative grind is the collaborations; gaining a designer’s perspective which is then applied to the brand language of converse gives way to a unique product. I personally attained a recent collaboration piece from Feng Chen Wang and converse, and the way the shoe’s upper and outsole are distorted creates the illusion of the shoe being in the process of transforming. Converse also allows its consumers to have a hand at creative expression by having a customizing option: from picking the color of the upper to the platforms of the shoes to the material itself. There is truly something for everyone of any age. The performance of the shoe doesn’t have the same rigorous expectations such as basketball shoes or cleats which gives it more freedom for casual wear. This is a company that I feel I would truly learn a lot from and gain many avenues of experience; my interests in the color and materials path become heightened when I look through converse’s catalog of shoes and merchandise.

JENSEN
I found this designer serendipitously on instagram. A great platform for many artists and designer who want to share their craft in a quick and eye-catching fashion. Jensen’s work looked so different from the usual renders and sketches I see for shoe design. Many of the sketches and illustrations he does are not crazy photo-realistic in style but that’s what drew me to them in the first place. The expressionistic sketching style of layered colors and shapes give me inspiration to attempt more unique stylization to my drawings. The proportions and the variety of style provides an interesting challenge to the table. I want to be able to experiment with the way I sketch in a way that pushes the perception of designing a new product. Jensen works as a senior footwear designer at Reebok and has developed many sneakers that have made it to market; he also has a plethora of regular product design projects such as digital consumer electronics which contrast remarkably with his instagram feed. I think pushing yourself as a designer in new ways is the only thing ensures growth in skills.

HENRY BUILT Henry Built is an American kitchen system designed with the intent to raise the standard of what it feels like to live with and be surrounded by everyday products in the home. Henry Built strives to bring greater joy in the most common living spaces of a house through an untraditional approach that not only brings the user a more pleasurable experience, but actually finds a way to make that experience even more effortless and natural than before. Founded by Scott Hudson in 2001, and launched in Seattle, the young company began prototyping kitchen and living units that create the ideal combination of integrated product system I am extremely inspired by the design goals set by the company. Twelve design goals in fact, that push them to continuously evolve their designs, better understand their customers, the unity they strive for in their products and environments, their natural and beautiful looking designs, design to withstand the test of time, and so on. This is both realistic and ambitious to me beacause although these are simple design objectives that we all strive to reach as designers, I find it ambitious to always be reaching to meet twelve goals. I think this is a fanastic way to end a project knowing you have accomplished all twelve of these goals. This is truly the tell of a great product and keeps Henry Built at their roots for what their original design intent was and is. I think their most innovative and intriguing designs are the ones that play with space and challenge to make use of all small and large spaces throughout the house. Hidden panels, adjustable shelving, concealed storage, and integrated furniture truly sets their work apart from other systems I have seen in the past. The final thing I love about Henry Built products and systems and push myself to have in my designs as well, is the next level of beauty and sophistication in a modern space. While still feeling very warm, inviting, and intuitive, Henry Built managed to accomplish the one thing that I believe designers will always struggle with. Timelessness.

GAURI NANDA Gauri Nanda is a Product Designer in New York. She is 34 and her most known invention is the ‘Clocky’. Clocky is the alarm clock that runs away from you when you wake up in the morning so that you’re forced to get up. Another toy she invented that is sold in places like Walmart and Amazon, is Toymail. Toymail is a way for parents or even grandparents to stay connected to younger kids without cellphones. It’s a small animal toy that connects to WIFI and it’s a way to send and receive voice messages in a fun way to keep in contact. I enjoy her designing because its colorful and ‘cute’ and always playful. Gauri, designs for children and adults but uses the same style which I really love. Her designs, although adorable, also have purposes or create connections for people. She has not designed recently or even keeps up a presence on social media but the interviews/designs she has done I still enjoy. I first learned about her in this book my sister bought me for my high school graduation called “In the Company of Women” and the way she portrays herself and her positivity is really something I look up to. Gauri owns up to mistakes she’s made which is nice because she feels real. Gauri Nanda is her own boss and is the CEO of her company and it is very hard for women to make it to these higher places but as a woman of color as well, she’s an inspiration. She is not only honored for her designs but her mind and is constantly asked to speak at multiple colleges. She speaks on how she puts a lot of emotion into her designing and she’s always fun and honest, she is not this overly-professional person which is hard to find. Although, product design is a fun field, sometimes women have to portray themselves as more professional to be taken seriously but she has never even considered changing her style. Also, she says she eats two breakfasts a day and that is also something I can get behind.

IDEO is a global design company, creating positive impact through design. IDEO is a community of designers, entrepreneurs, engineers, teachers, researchers, and more. I find this community and consultancy to be a vey admirable company because they look at design though a very human centered and collaborative lens. IDEO designed the first mouse for Steve Jobs in 1980, making a more easily manufacturable component that’s still used in virtually all mechanical mice produced today. I admire how long IDEO has been in the design field, and that they are still trying to push the boundaries of product design. Their design process is very straight forward, working in teams, conducting qualitative research and quantitative analysis, synthesizing the research, observations, and learnings and developing themes all before starting the ideation process. This company has projects in many different fields, making the day to day work interesting and fresh.
