XENITH REACH S H O U L D E R PA D XENITH & CCS SPONSORED STUDIO Xenith Reach focuses on improving mobility for skilled positions. Hearing that Athletes have to alter their game because of safety gear, exemplifies its impact on the game of football.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

Designing safety for the football athlete from head to toe.

AT H L E T E S I N S I G H T SYDNEE KOSAK Defensive Back & Receiver Xenia Tornado’s, Butler County Bronco’s (Semi Pro). “I definitely feel the most restriction in the upper body. With shoulder pads you often have to force the flex.”

KEY INSIGHT Defenders take advantage of a players equipment and will drag them down by anything they can easily grasp. The athletes arm motion is limited to only being able to raise up to shoulder height. This can be seen in the image on the right and bottom left. Athletes currently have no solution to this problem and often say, “its just something we’ve gotten use to it.”

XENITH VELOCITY

BRAND LANGUAGE Xenith has a visual brand language that is unrivaled, focusing on anatomy and creating different approaches to logo placement. This was something I truly wanted to capitalize on as I began to ideate around a final design.

“ T H E Y A R E FA I R LY C O M F O R T A B L E A N D R E A L LY L I G H T.”

“ T H E Y C O U L D B E S L I M M E R I N P R O F I L E .” “ T H E Y A C T U A L LY L O O K D E S I G N E D .”

DESIGN OPPORTUNITY As a designer hearing athletes say, “It’s just something we’ve gotten use to” emphasizes the impact of safety gear on the game. Improving the range of motion in shoulder padding could provide the Xenith team with the edge amongst their competitors.

Free padding is foam padding that adheres to the skin with Kenesio sports tape.

Kenesio tape would adhere the padding to the skin, as seen in this exploded view.

FINAL AESTHETIC DIRECTION

FINAL DESIGN

R E A C H P L AT E S Breaking up the shoulder area allows the athlete to have a wider work range when catching or defending on ball.

SLIMMER PROFILE The profile of the shoulder pad has a smaller footprint and cuts in towards the rib area of the shoulder pad, allowing for the athlete to reach across the chest a lot easier.

FINAL DESIGN

B R A N D L A N G U A G E I N C O R P O R AT I O N Settle cues of Xeniths branding comes from various different surface details that form the X.

T H E H U M A N A N AT O M Y The surface also reflects human anatomy exaggerating the shoulder blades and spine piece to display brand language through the players jersey.

F R E E PA D D I N G & K E N E S I O TA P E Free Padding is accessible padding with a sticky adhesive backing. Free pads are meant to be applied to the skin where ever the player needs protection. Kenesio tape secures the pad in place while allowing the player to have a full range of motion.

R E A C H P L AT E S Reach plates shift as the player moves, working with their natural range of motion. This allows the player to have increased reach ensuring that nothing is restricting them from completing an impact play.

DESIGN BRIEF

DESIGN A MOBILIT Y PRODUCT OR SERIES OF PRODUCTS AIMED AT IMPROVING THE LIFE OF A PHYSICALLY DISABLED INDIVIDUAL, EITHER TEMPORARILY OR PERMANENTLY.

HUGO TREVINO

RARE GENETIC DISEASES

DISABILITY:

Spinal Muscular Atrophy

SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY:

INTERESTS:

Hugo loves hanging with friends, eating out, and going to the movies. Often it can be hard to access buildings and carrying a ramp is not feasible, but he likes to get out normal things.

HUGO’S PERFECT DAY:

A perfect day for Hugo would consist of being able to traverse his environment without any hick ups or running into any unaccessible obstacles. It is difficult for him to reach things, somehow if there was a way his environment could react to him instead of the other way around that would be perfect.

Is a rare neuromuscular disorder characterized by loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting. Often leading to early childhood death.

MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY: A group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.

KEY LEARNINGS INSIGHTS

PAIN POINTS

It can be really difficult, even impossible to do a wheel chair or bed transfer without help.

• Mobility in home, and crowded

It can be hard to live independently when you need assistance to sleep at night, or assistance with making bed transfers.

• Trouble sleeping, often causing ulcers.

environments. • Dignifying struggles ex. Outside misconception of thinking there illness in

Some pay individuals to stay on stand by and monitor their sleeping at night, in case they need to change positions or get out of the bed.

• Mobility products and braces causing more

Depending on the disease most individuals are require to have mechanized beds.

• Often dependent in tasks involving mobility

mental. pain than benefiting the user.

WHATS NEXT?

G R I D D E D P L AT F O R M C O N C E P T SECTIONED DESIGN Figuring out the necessary amount of grids for improved positioning of the user was my ideal focus. Also the shape and size necessary to move a human.

OPERABILITY Focusing on using modalities such as the hand or eyes to track gestures from the user, activating a change in bed position.

GRID IN CONTEXT Showing the gridded platform in context with user. The user can be seen making a hand gesture to adjust the hospital bed.

A R M AT U R E C O N C E P T ARMATURE IN USE The armature can be seen keeping the user from falling out of bed, and aiding them in changing position. Eliminating the need for a nurses assistance.

PROVIDING MOBILITY My vision for the arm was to mainly be a mobility aid for the user, helping them change positions or get out of bed.

FINAL DESIGN PLATFORM FINAL DESIGN I mainly focused on creating a way to keep the user from falling off the bed, which explains the shape and size of the platform. Eliminating bed guards was a major focus of mine due to there intrusive qualities.

SLATTED MATTRESS FOR FLEX The bottom left, and top left sketches exemplify a layered mattress with slatting for flex. This allows the mattress to conform to the shape of the platform.

MORE NATURAL ORIENTATION Griding the platform of the bed into four sections would allow for more natural mobility while still keeping functionality feasible.

THE BIGGER PICTURE The arm and Platform are two systems that would work in cadence keeping the user safe as positional changes occur. Or even as seen aiding the patient in getting out of bed.

ANGLE

I N S P I R AT I O N MINIMAL & ANGULAR Aesthetically, capturing hard angles and seamless transitions will draw out emotion from the end user. Achieving a “skeletal feel for the frame is my focus. These images set the mood for what I want to achieve.

BENJAMIN HUBERT AXYL COLLECTION Benjamin Hubert has collaborated with British furniture brand Allermuir to create a collection made entirely from recycled materials, the A-frame typology and the mid-century wrap-around shell comes together to create a distinctive and innovate chair collection.

D E S I G N O P P O RT U N I T Y I Used Benjamin as inspiration and as an example of the minimal style I want to capture. Stylistically I would like to approach the design more focused on structure. Keeping the materials simple will allow for millennium’s to have that show piece in a home or apartment for a reasonable price.
