Tchaikovsky’s most colorful symphony, the Fourth, packs a wallop of belting good tunes, toe-tapping rhythms and vivid orchestration, combined with fatalistic tragedy and balletic grace… and of course the famous pizzicato movement.

With Raymond Leppard on the podium, Mozart and Beethoven’s compositions could only sound more authentically precise if the composers were conducting over his shoulder. An exceptional level of grace, dignity and artistry is brought to Mozart’s 25th piano concerto by Orion Weiss.

Mahler’s Fourth Symphony paints a musical portrait of those matters he continually wrestled with: questions of existence, of what happens after death, of what lies behind the everyday, surrounded by the poetry and world of the fabled “Wunderhorn.” Barber’s centennial tribute includes his famous tear-jerker Adagio and peacefully serene Knoxville.

If this isn’t heaven in a concert hall, then here’s as close as it gets! Holst’s spectacular space journey embodies the mystical voices of the planets. Fleisher

Leon Fleisher, among the greatest pianists of our time, was suddenly limited to playing with only his left hand. But he refused to let this affliction stop him from championing the one-handed repertoire. One such work is Ravel’s Left-Hand Concerto which often makes one hand work hard enough for two. It was inspired by a pianist who lost his arm in the first World War.

Often compared to Harry Connick, Jr. and Michael Bublé, singer, pianist and composer Tony DeSare brings his signature sound to the best American pop music from Harold Arlen to Chuck Berry to Prince. He’s got a style all his own with his refreshing, jazzy interpretations of songs to swoon over, such as They Can’t Take That Away From Me, You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To and Kiss. Take an Emerald Isle journey in true Celtic style with dancing, bagpipes, theatrical staging and music, featuring an impressive cast of performers. Seven-time Tony Award nominee Bernadette Peters has wowed audiences with show-stopping Broadway hits and captivating performances on the big screen and in concert. The journey begins with some home cookin’ and musical Americana. Copland gets the dance going with music from Rodeo. Still’s pioneering work gives a symphonic dimension to the blues, inspired by Dunbar’s dialectic poems. Gershwin incorporated a wealth of blues and jazz idioms into Porgy and Bess, which he considered to be his finest work.

Tempt your taste buds with an assortment of Zakuski (that’s Russian for appetizers) and explore music of the Russian soul with Borodin, Mussorgsky, Glinka, RimskyKorsakov and sweet melodies of Tchaikovsky with JSO violinist Ruxandra Marquardt. Imagine you’re rubbing elbows in the imperial court of the Tsars as they were entertained by such spectacular ballets and operas.

Set sail on a Nordic adventure with a smorgasbord of delicacies and music from Scandinavia. Enjoy Grieg’s soundtrack to the fantastic folklore and raucous satire of Peer Gynt with actors and vocalists, Sibelius’ mythical swan song on the Tuonela featuring the JSO’s Claudia Minch, and the heroic anthem that inspired patriotic fervor and ultimate triumph for the people of Finlandia.

Hungry for Hungarian? From middle Europe, infused with healthy doses of paprika, arose some of the most infectious music. Liszt’s wildly animated (literally) Hungarian Rhapsody sets the stage, along with his sensual Mephisto Waltz and famous tone poem Les Preludes. And we have Bartok and Kodaly to thank for combing the countryside and gathering the definitive collection of pure Magyar folk melodies.

A few sips and you’re an irresistible Casanova! Nemorino is down and out – dead-end job, hardly noticed by the ladies, and hopelessly in love with Adina, who’s indifferent to his yearnings. But she’s not indifferent to the yearnings of Sergeant Belcore. (There’s something about a man in uniform.) Poor Nemorino hardly stands a chance until huckster Dr. Dulcamara whips up an “Elixir of Love” (really, it’s bad Bordeaux) that makes Nemorino the go-to guy for some serious loving. Make it your pre-Valentine’s date night – a comic opera with lovable characters, wonderful arias, beautiful sets and dazzling costumes. Fully-staged opera in two acts. Now that we’ve stuck that in your head, you'll have to finish the song. One of Gilbert and Sullivan's wittiest and most comical operettas invades Jacoby Symphony Hall. It’s a close encounter of the friendly kind when an alien drops in to visit the Jacksonville Symphony. Schnoodle, who comes from the distant planet Schnarp, leads kids through a concert that explains how the different instruments in an orchestra work and how they interact. Wear your costume! Experience the magic of the holidays by taking a ride on Chris Van Alsburg’s The Polar Express. This timeless tale of a boy who still believes makes every child always hope to hear the ringing of Santa’s bells. As images from the book are projected onto the stage, the words of this Caldecott Medal-winner come to life through the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, chorus and narrator. We’ll also ring in the season with a holiday sing-a-long! Young twins Azizi and Aziza work together to outwit a gruesome monster and bring peace to their village. Based on a traditional African folk tale, the young audience is swept away to a faraway land of dark forests, vast plains and spooky swamps. The rhythms of Africa, powerful music, beautifully carved masks, singing and movement create an exotic atmosphere and tell a thrilling tale of family unity and courage. Experience the power of teamwork as the sights and sounds of America’s pastime come alive. The Jacksonville Suns team up with the Jacksonville Symphony to show kids the importance of working as a team. Get ready for a brand new baseball season with selections from Casey at the Bat, narrated by Suns owner Peter “Pedro” Bragan, and many more tunes inspired by the great sport of baseball.

Frequently Asked Questions Where should I park at the Times-Union Center? Subscribers to Masterworks, Fusion, Passport, Plugged In, Family or Pops Series can purchase series parking vouchers for the garage adjacent to the Omni Jacksonville Hotel for only $20 for the entire season. The Times-Union Center is a multi-use facility and two or more events often occur simultaneously. We strongly advise that you allow ample time for parking. For more information on parking, and to see a parking map, log on to www.jaxsymphony.org. Is there handicapped seating available? Handicapped and wheelchair-accessible seating are only available through the JSO Box Office, by phone at (904) 354-5547 or in person, and cannot be purchased online. Our Box Office is happy to assist with special seating arrangements for persons with disabilities. What if I arrive late? Latecomers are seated after the conclusion of the first work on the program. Patrons who leave the hall during the performance will not be reseated until after the completion of the piece, and there will be no seating break during any work. At the end of intermission, bell tones will signal you to return to your seats. Please show courtesy to the performers by remaining at your seat (applauding, of course) through the final ovation. May we bring children? Children ages five years and over are welcome at all symphony concerts. Children of all ages are welcome at Family Series concerts, First Coast Nutcracker, Youth Orchestra and Young People’s concerts. Every child over the age of one requires a ticket and supervision at concerts in Jacoby Symphony Hall. What was I thinking? Cameras and recording devices may not be brought into the concert hall. We appreciate your cooperation in avoiding conversations/talking during concerts.
