President’s Message What a long hot summer we have had. Hopefully it will be over soon and we can start getting in gear for a very successful symphony season. Of course we, the Guild, are a very important part of this season. You will be asked by many to help out with our Guild projects. I hope you will say yes when asked. I hope you are planning on attending as many concerts as possible because that is the main way we can support the Jacksonville Symphony. Our first gathering will be the Fall Membership Coffee. Pam Nelson and her committee have been hard at work planning this. Please come and bring a friend. We always need new members. Our first luncheon will be in November. We have combined the Friend's luncheon and the holiday luncheon. Bonnie Ennis and Anita Geiger are in charge. There will of course be more information on both of these items in this newsletter. We want to welcome our new co-Guild coordinator Catherine Grossholz. She and Sherrie are doing a wonderful job in the office. In closing we want to remember Betty Boyer and Taffy Rogers. They were such supporters of the Guild putting in endless hours throughout their membership. Let us look to them as inspiration for what we, the Guild, can accomplish. Pat Manko, Guild President

Ways And Means Welcome to our 2011 – 2012 Guild season! We’ve been diligently working through the summer to bring new fundraising ideas to our group, and we don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Who doesn’t love a mystery? We’re holding a Mystery Raffle and will begin to sell tickets in January 2012 for the drawing at our annual June luncheon. The prize will be a surprise to all! The spring of 2012 will see the return of Rhapsody on the Runway, with a cocktail party and runway fashion show featuring the gorgeous clothes of Jacksonville fashion designer Linda Cunningham. We are delighted to present an all-new evening of pleasure and entertainment. Stay tuned for details on this exciting event as they evolve. And what else is new and exciting for the Jacksonville Symphony Guild? It’s the “Social Register”, and you will definitely want to be a part of it! Briefly, the “Social Register” will consist of a series of events this season from January through June, with each event hosted by individuals or groups willing to in-kind the cost of the party. You may invite friends, neighbors, Guild members who will, in turn, pay a nominal amount to attend. The monies collected from the guests will be the net proceeds to The Guild. The parties cover a wide and varied array of entertainment. We have plans for an ice cream social; a cruise and cocktail party aboard a boat; a brunch; a mah-jongg get-together; a high tea and tablescapes; a bluegrass bar-b-q; a garden party; an off-shore charter fishing trip; an outing to the Suns baseball game; a safari at White Oak; an elegant dinner, just to name a few. Are you hooked yet? The party ideas are endless, and you have probably already thought of one you would like to host, either by yourself, with a friend, or with a group. This concept has been extremely successful for several of the Guilds nationwide, and in some instances their major annual fundraiser, as it has evolved over many years. However, this is our first year, and we hope you will support it with your ingenuity and creative talents as you perhaps formulate your own event. In time, we hope the “Social Register” will become synonymous with the Jacksonville Symphony Guild! Now that you have some insight into our up-coming fundraising thoughts for 2011-2012, we welcome your in-put and suggestions. Please bear in mind that the success of each event is dependent upon the support and participation of our Guild members, our Symphony staff, and the Jacksonville community. We’re looking forward to working with everyone and to an exciting and successful year! VOLUNTEER --- TO OFFER OR GIVE OF ONE’S OWN FREE WILL. Allene Groote, Ways & Means

Eleanor King “Thank You” message to the Guild Dear Guild Members, It was a great and grand surprise when I learned of the tribute to my fundraiser for the Eleanor H Kind Tuition Scholarship which benefits the was emotional: awe, pride pleasure, and humility surged within me. I challenge to express my gratitude. However, it does seem fitting for a benefit the young and I am pleased to be such a vehicle.

97th birthday with a JYSO. My response knew it would be a tribute to the old to

Special appreciation is due to our shining stars, Mary Jeannette Howle and Eleanor Hughes, whose fertile imaginations created the “97” plan and to President Pat Manko who encouraged them. Pat also with vim led the Guild Members at the annual luncheon in the telephone singing of “Happy Birthday” to me. This rendition greeted and cheered me when I returned from a three week visit with my son, Ray, who was recuperating from open heart surgery. All of this started me thinking about my long association with the Guild and brought to mind another Guild benefit. In 1962, I chaired the POP concert celebrating the Centennial of the Civil War, James Christian Pfohl, conducting and Annette King, Guild President. It was held on the terrace of the old Prudential building with good weather (praise God) and we made $1200.00. May the “97” benefit do as well!! The Guild does exquisite work as it nourishes the cultural opportunities with music in Greater Jacksonville and membership is a privilege. I thank you, thank you, dear members for your care, concern and contributions! “And so my heart within me fills, as the scholarship fund refills.” Sincerely and with Appreciation and Best Wishes, Eleanor H King

Please Welcome Please welcome Catherine Grossholz as the Guild Co-Coordinator. Catherine and Sherrie will be job sharing. They are working on developing a schedule that will insure that the Guild office is covered and continues to be a support for the Guild and Symphony projects. Catherine recently retired from Bank of America, is a member of MOCA and a new member of The Guild. She enjoys crafts, sewing, gardening and reading. Jacksonville has been her home since 1972 and she lives in the Arlington area. She looks forward to working with and assisting you in meeting the Guild's mission "to further awareness of music and music education and to create strong community support of the JSA through fundraising projects."

Did You Know Did you know there are over 1000 churches in the Jacksonville metro area? It would take a draconian effort to contact someone from each of these churches. The Guild can help! The Guild will partner with the JSA Marketing Department to spread the word of our Michael W. Smith concert on Tuesday, December 20 at 8 pm. Michael W. Smith is one of today's most acclaimed contemporary Christian artists. His heartwarming performance of holiday favorites is sure to delight the whole family. Giving Bill Cosnotti (JSA Sales and Marketing) church contact information will lead to group sales. This is one of the ways we will help to raise money to meet our Guild goal. Any leads on churches with a church contact person that Guild members give to Bill Cosnotti that turn into sales will be credited to the Guild! Some churches are very small and we thought it would be most efficient to contact the larger establishments and the ones that our staff, musicians and support associations (GUILD) know. We need to know a contact person to see if it is possible to spread the word to the congregation. Bill has a discount coupon that he will send to the contacts you give him that illustrates the Special Church Group Offer and he will include a description of the concert. Please contact Bill at 356-0426 with any names, referrals, questions or suggestions on how to spread the word. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sherrie Calvert Webb

Regular or Decaf? Before each of the Coffee Concerts volunteers from the Guild serve coffee/tea/cookies to those attending. This is a fun time for us to visit with each other while preparing the refreshments we’ll be serving plus having the chance to serve the Symphony goers. The Guild provides cookies and Fazzini Coffee kindly supplies the coffee and tea. Brownies from the volunteering Guild members are always appreciated. From past experience we expect to serve between 600-900 guests attending. Letters have been sent to members and we appreciate your volunteering.

JSYO Fall Concert The JSYO will have its Fall Concert November 13th at 5 pm and we would love to see all of you in Jacoby Symphony Hall...The Guild is such a huge support of our talented young musicians, and with more than 260 in our 6 orchestras this year, the concert is sure to be something special! GUILD FRIENDS AND GUILD HOLIDAY LUNCHEON The Guild Friends and Guild Holiday Luncheons are being combined this year. The date for this spectacular event will be November 17, 2011 at Hidden Hills Country Club. Rich Ridenour is planning another special program for our entertainment and we will be honoring several of our past presidents. There will be Nutcracker merchandise available to get everyone’s Christmas shopping either started or finished. Mark this date on your calendar as you won’t want to miss this special luncheon. As a further reminder, invitations will be in your mailbox in October. Bonnie Ennis and Anita Geiger, Co-Chairs

2011 Nutcracker Boutique Think Holidays!! It may be only September, but the Nutcracker Boutique is gearing up for a fabulous and festive season. Most of our merchandise has been delivered and is patiently waiting in our warehouse. You will be absolutely delighted with this year’s selections. We will bring a sampling of our Boutique merchandise to the Guild Holiday Luncheon scheduled for Thursday, November 17. Save room on your Holiday gift list for our beautiful items! Like last year, there are four performances of the Nutcracker – Friday, December 16 through Sunday, December 18. We’ve had a great group of faithful Guild (and friends) volunteers who help at this event but we can always use more. There are opportunities at each performance to set-up and arrange the boutique and/or to sell our merchandise. The Nutcracker Boutique is one of our major fund raisers and offers a unique opportunity to get into the Holiday Spirit. Please contact Naomi Karkanen at 762-7762 if you are interested in volunteering or have any questions. Let’s make this our most successful Boutique yet!!

R.A.K.E.’s (Random Acts of Kindness) Taking part in a R.A.K.E. is a wonderful way to get to know the Symphony musicians. The Guild presents 4 R.A.K.E.’s a year as well as a luncheon in the Spring. Since they are random acts and the purpose is to surprise the musicians with treats for one of their breaks, the date are not published. If you are interested in helping to provide food and serve at one of the events call the Guild Office – 358-1479.
