Edward Albee reviewing a script.

Edward Albee S U G G E S T E D

Playwright Edward Albee has defined modern American theatre with four decades of provocative, controversial and brilliant plays. A three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner, he has been called “the greatest living playwright” by The New Yorker. Albee is perhaps best known for his 1962 drama, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It won both the Tony and New York Drama Critics Circle Awards and is widely considered a classic of American contemporary theatre. In his lectures, Albee describes the power of the arts as a catalyst for change. He believes that art should be dangerous, that it should reveal all of our shortcomings and complacency — hopefully inspiring us to live our lives more fully. Albee’s other groundbreaking plays include The Zoo Story, A Delicate Balance, Seascape, Three Tall Women and The Goat or Who Is Sylvia, which won the Tony Award. He is a Kennedy Center Honoree, was awarded the National Medal of Arts, and received a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre. Albee had three plays produced in New York during the 20072008 season: Peter and Jerry with Bill Pullman; a revival of his one-act plays, The American Dream and The Sandbox; and Occupant, about Louise Nevelson. His play, Me, Myself and I, opened at the McCarter Theater in January 2008.

Elizabeth Alexander delivering her poem at the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Elizabeth Alexander S U G G E S T E D

Poet, essayist, playwright and Yale professor Elizabeth Alexander recently made history as the fourth poet to compose and deliver a poem at a presidential inauguration. Immediately following Barack Obama’s inaugural address, Alexander’s oration echoed through the streets of Washington D.C. as millions listened worldwide. Joining the ranks of other celebrated honorees Robert Frost and Maya Angelou, Alexander’s task was even more historic as America welcomed the first African-American president into the White House. The daughter of a civil rights advisor to President Johnson, she has come full-circle having recited her poem, “Praise Song for the Day” on the same Mall where she, as a child, witnessed MLK deliver his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. A long-time advocate of the arts as a part of our civic dialogue, she has said, “Poetry is not meant to cheer; rather, poetry challenges, and moves us towards transformation.” Alexander’s collections of poetry, which explore issues of race, gender and politics, include American Sublime, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Antebellum Dream Book, The Venus Hottentot, and Body of Life. She has been published in the Paris Review, American Poetry Review and The Washington Post and she has appeared on The Colbert Report, CBS News and PBS’ The Newshour. Alexander has taught literature and creative writing and read her poetry across the United States and abroad for over twenty years. In July 2009, she will assume chairship of the Department of African American Studies at Yale University. Her awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Alphonse Fletcher, Sr. Fellowship for work that “contributes to improving race relations in American society.”

Called a “born communicator and effective proselytizer for music” by The New York Times and a “lively entertainer as well as a powerhouse musician” by The San Francisco Chronicle, Alsop has spent a lifetime dedicated to music. She began playing piano at 2, violin at 5, entered Julliard pre-college at 7, decided to become a conductor at 9, and at 16 entered Yale. In 1991 she made her professional conducting debuts at the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic where she continues as a regular guest conductor, along with the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony. Winner of Gramophone’s “Artist of the Year” award, Alsop was the first conductor to be named a MacArthur Fellow. In 2006 she was the only classical musician invited to attend the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Alsop has been profiled in TIME and named one of “America’s Most Powerful Women” by Newsweek. She can be heard regularly as a commentator on NPR’s Weekend Edition program, “Marin on Music,” BBC’s Radio 3 and XM Satellite Radio. Avraham Burg S U G G E S T E D

Activist and political leader Avraham Burg has been a leading figure in Israeli politics for over 20 years. The youngest speaker in the history of the Israeli Knesset (19992003) and a staunch supporter of peace in the Middle East, Burg has been referred to as “one of the best speechmakers in politics.” Despite having grown up at the heart of the religious Zionist movement, Burg has led the way to a more liberal reconciliatory approach to the Middle East conflict; “All of my life I’ve been an activist of the peace camp ... I’m ready to go a very long way to bring people together from dialogue to acceptance and than compromise.” In a bold move, he became the first speaker to invite his Palestinian counterpart to address the Israeli Knesset. In his book, God is Back (2006, Hebrew), Burg explores the critical need for separation of religion and the state. He warns that an increasingly large sector of Israeli society disdains political democracy. In his most recent book, The Holocaust is Over; We Must Rise from Its Ashes, (2008, English) he argues that the Jewish nation has been traumatized by the Holocaust and has lost the ability to trust itself, its neighbors or the world around it. Burg has written for The Guardian and the International Herald Tribune and appeared on CNN’s Crossfire and CBS’s The Early Show. Currently, Burg is leading a British-Israeli investment company that attracts funds to strengthen businesses in Israel.

Author of Marley & Me John Grogan was a columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer when he wrote a column saying goodbye to his incorrigible 13-year-old Labrador retriever, Marley. When hundreds of messages flooded his inbox and voicemail the next day, John recalls, “That’s when I knew I had a bigger story to tell.” The story became Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog, his book about what a misbehaving dog meant to his family. A touchstone for people worldwide, the book grew into a runaway #1 New York Times bestseller with more than 3 million copies in print in 30 languages. Made into a movie starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, the book is now part of Grogan’s engaging and inspirational conversation about family, loyalty, optimism, and what really matters in life. Grogan has been featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, CBS’ The Early Show, National Geographic Channel’s The Dog Whisperer, and in The New York Times, USA Today, and People magazine. In his popular appearances he shares what his mischievous dog taught him about patience, constancy and acceptance, “that commitment matters and that ‘in good times and bad, in sickness and health’ really means something.” Grogan’s latest New York Times bestseller is The Longest Trip Home. Publishers Weekly called it “a hilarious and touching memoir of his childhood.”

Writer, novelist and professor Jamaica Kincaid skillfully and elegantly tempers the boundary between poetry and prose. With her books and novels, including Annie John, Lucy, At the Bottom of the River and A Small Place, she has carved out a unique and cherished place in the American literary landscape. Kincaid’s literary “voice” is deeply rooted in her experiences as a child in her native Antigua. Growing up under the colonial rule of England instilled in her a tragic, yet often-ignored perspective. Says Kincaid, “I never give up thinking about the way I came into the world, how my ancestors came from Africa to the West Indies as slaves. I just never forget it. It’s like a big wave that’s still pulsing.” Kincaid won the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts for her first book, At the Bottom of the River. Her award-winning book, A Small Place, inspired the 2001 documentary, Life and Debt, about the impact globalization can have on a developing country. Kincaid is at work on a new novel, See Now Then. A visiting professor at Harvard University, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2004.

Louise Leakey excavating a fossil from the Turkana Basin in Kenya.

Louise Leakey S U G G E S T E D

Paleontologist, conservationist, educator and National Geographic Explorer-inResidence Louise Leakey is the youngest member of the famous Leakey family of fossil hunters in East Africa. With an adventurous spirit and unwavering focus on the advancement and understanding of human origins, she has spent much of her life leading expeditions into the remote badlands of northern Kenya. From these groundbreaking forays, Dr. Leakey and her team have yielded some of our deepest insights into what it is that makes us human. Her team, The Koobi Fora Research Project, has made discoveries that have shaped modern thinking on the journey of humanity over the past 4 million years. One of the most publicized discoveries, Kenyanthropus platyops, challenged the straight-line story of human evolution. From her earliest childhood spent among the nomadic desert people of Lake Turkana, Leakey has developed a deep attachment to the wildlife and cultural heritage of northern Kenya. Today she draws on her scientific background in human origins to work with the local communities in building a future for this region in a dramatically changing world. Having developed a state of the art research center in the Turkana Basin, Leakey has gained a unique perspective on the protection of the desert environment in Africa. She was recently selected to participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos, the aim of which is to understand the problems and risks the world faces in the future.

Meave Leakey S U G G E S T E D

Paleontologist and zoologist Meave Leakey is the standardbearer of a distinguished family of paleoanthropologists who have dominated their field since the beginning of the 20th century. Her life-long search for clues about our past has led her to every corner of the remote, windswept semi-deserts of Kenya’s Lake Turkana Basin. Over the last four decades, the Koobi Fora Research Project, which she currently codirects with her eldest daughter Louise, has unearthed much of the evidence behind our current understanding of our past. Dr. Leakey is presently focusing on the origins of our own genus, Homo, and the emergence of Homo erectus, the first human ancestor to move out of Africa. In 1999, 2000 and again in 2007 the project made sensational new discoveries of early Homo that, as National Geographic put it, “challenge the straight-line story of human evolution.” The announcement of these discoveries was featured in Nature and The New York Times. Leakey is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence in recognition of the 50-year relationship between “the National Geographic Society and the Leakey family dynasty of pioneering fossil hunters.” She is also a Research Professor at Stony Brook University and a Research Associate of the National Museums of Kenya. A masterful storyteller, Dr. Leakey conveys the importance of studying our origins in the context of the modern world with vivid images, real-life stories and provocative questions.

Paleoanthropologist, political advisor and environmentalist Richard Leakey has been making international headlines for more than 40 years. Son of the famous Louis B. and Mary Leakey, he has been credited with some of the most significant fossil discoveries in history and was named one of TIME’s 100 Greatest Minds of the 20th Century. He is the author of over 100 articles and books including Origins and Wildlife Wars: My Fight to Save Africa’s Natural Treasures. In his 1995 book, The Sixth Extinction: Patterns of Life and The Future of Humankind, Leakey examined the five great catastrophic extinctions in the history of the planet. Written well before our increased environmental awareness, Leakey stressed how human beings are dangerously reducing biodiversity, damaging eco-systems and possibly precipitating the next major mass extinction, which could number humans amongst its victims. Now a Professor of Anthropology at Stony Brook University and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London (FRS) in 2007, Leakey convenes the Stony Brook World Environmental Forum and the Human Evolution Symposiums and Workshops. Leakey has served as Director of the National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service and as Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet in Kenya. He is Chair of The Turkana Basin Institute at Stony Brook and Transparency International-Kenya and recently founded WildlifeDirect, an online service that supports conservationists and allows anyone to play a role in the survival of the world’s most endangered species.

Her recent credits include An Unfinished Life, Slipstream, Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, Two and a Half Men, Happiness and the TV movie, Elvis. Manheim’s social activism has included working with the disabled, the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood. A skilled raconteur and eloquent speaker, he understands important issues and events in all of their complexity and how they impact our lives. Meacham is responsible for all day-to-day editorial operations of Newsweek and has written many cover stories. His bestseller, Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship, explored the fascinating relationship between the two leaders who piloted the free world to victory in World War II. Time declared it “masterful,” and The Washington Post proclaimed it “a memorable achievement.” His most recent New York Times bestseller, American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House (Nov. '08), won the Pulitzer Prize for biography and was cited as an “unlikely portrait of a not always admirable democrat, but a pivotal president, written with an agile prose that brings the Jackson saga to life.” His previous book, American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation, was also a New York Times bestseller. USA Today said it “provides an enlightening look at how the founding fathers discovered ways to tame but not extinguish the fires of faith.” A member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a “Global Leader for Tomorrow” of the World Economic Forum in Davos, he has appeared on such programs as The Charlie Rose Show, The Today Show, The O’Reilly Factor and The Colbert Report.

Joel Meyerowitz S U G G E S T E D

Photographer Joel Meyerowitz is an award-winning artist whose work has appeared in over 350 galleries and museums around the world. A Guggenheim Fellow, he is the author of 16 books including Cape Light, considered a classic work of color photography. His work took a different turn in the days after 9/11. Through his persistence and determination he gained unlimited access to Ground Zero, creating the only photographic record of the aftermath of the World Trade Center attack. His most recent book, Aftermath: The World Trade Center Archive, features 400 of over 8,000 images, as well as an engaging account of his experience during recovery efforts. “To me, no photographs meant no history,” says Meyerowitz. “My task was to make a record of the aftermath which has embedded itself deeply into the consciousness of all of us in America and around the world.” An exhibit from the archive has traveled to over 200 cities, in 60 countries from Kabul to Lima to Beijing, and a permanent selection will be at the World Trade Center Museum. Early to embrace digital photography while continuing to shoot in film, Meyerowitz believes that “in an image focused world we are all photographers now.” In a new program, he shares selections of audience photography along with some of his own work to illustrate the increasingly blurring lines between professional and amateur photographers. Meyerowitz is an NEA and NEH award-winner, and has been profiled by Nightline, People and CBS Sunday Morning. A retrospective of his 45-year career will be published in fall 2008.

Theater and opera director Jonathan Miller is a “physician and neuropsychologist, a prolific author and lecturer,” wrote The New York Times. “[He] knows more than a little about everything. He combines qualities that shouldn’t be combined in one person: he is both a performer and a thinker.” Miller first gained international prominence with Beyond the Fringe, the 1960 play that redefined the boundaries of comedy, launching a lunatic legacy that has stretched from Monty Python to Saturday Night Live. He has enjoyed one of the most stellar careers in modern theater, directing countless plays (including 11 for the BBC’s Shakespeare series) and over 50 operas at some of the world’s most distinguished venues from La Scala to The Metropolitan Opera. He has written and presented several major series for the BBC and PBS including The Body in Question, a landmark series on the history of medicine and, most recently, A Brief History of Disbelief. His books include The Human Body, The Facts of Life, Subsequent Performances, Nowhere in Particular and On Reflection, based on his lectures. For colleges and universities interested in an extended visit, Dr. Miller accepts occasional one or two-week residencies. His multidisciplinary expertise has made these very popular.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Native American scholar and poet N. Scott Momaday has been referred to as “the dean of American Indian writers” by The New York Times. He crafts — in language and imagery — majestic landscapes of a sacred culture. Named a UNESCO Artist for Peace and Oklahoma’s poet laureate, he is a recipient of the 2007 National Medal of Arts for “introducing millions worldwide to the essence of Native American culture.” Momaday is the founder of The Buffalo Trust, dedicated to the preservation of Native American culture and heritage. He has held tenured teaching posts at UC Berkeley, Stanford University and the University of Arizona. Momaday was the first Native American to be awarded the Pulitzer for his novel, House Made of Dawn. His other awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and the “Mondello,” Italy’s highest literary honor. His works include The Way to Rainy Mountain, The Names: A Memoir, The Ancient Child and a new collection, Three Plays, that celebrates Kiowa history and culture. Behind it all beats the heart of the oral storyteller, keeping alive — in myths and memories — the people persecuted and the land lost. “In the oral tradition,” says Momaday, “stories are not told merely to entertain or instruct. They are told to be believed. Stories are realities lived and believed. They are true.”

Questioning conventional thinking, Ramo puts forth a radical new model for thriving in a world of unexpected change. Prior to entering the strategic advisory business, Ramo was an award-winning journalist and the youngest-ever Foreign Editor of TIME magazine. Alice Schroeder with the subject of her New York Times bestseller, Warren Buffett.

Alice Schroeder S U G G E S T E D

Bloomberg News columnist and former regulator, CPA and all-star Wall Street analyst Alice Schroeder is the author of The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life, a #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller. The Snowball is a revealing and complete look at the life, wisdom and philosophy of Buffett, from the development of his outlook on the world and the principles he lives by to the business secrets he has never before shared publicly. It was named one of the 10 best books of the year by TIME. Schroeder -- the first analyst to be granted an interview with Buffett and the only analyst with whom he would speak -- went on leave from Morgan Stanley in 2003 to begin researching and writing the book. Recruited for this task by Buffett himself, who values the way she thinks and writes, Schroeder was given unprecedented access -- to his files, family, business associates and massive quantities of his time for interviews and questions. Schroeder began her career as an auditor for Ernst & Young. Before moving to Wall Street as a securities analyst, she worked as a project manager at the Financial Accounting Standards Board, where she drafted some of the most significant accounting rules affecting the insurance industry. Her 54-page report for PaineWebber on Berkshire Hathaway in 1999 was the first comprehensive look at Buffett's company and became a bestseller. She was recruited by Morgan Stanley, where she was a managing director and Institutional Investor's top-ranked property-casualty insurance analyst. In 2008 Ms. Schroeder was chosen alongside Ben Bernanke and Hillary Clinton as one of the "People to Watch" by BusinessWeek. Risk and Insurance magazine called her "one of the most respected -- and unafraid -- thinkers on Wall Street."

The winner of two Peabody Awards and Emmy Awards in every decade since the ‘70’s, he has been named to TV Guide’s All-Star News “dream team.” Using every device he can think of — from teaching the tricks of Enron’s “accounting alchemy” with a magic wand and disappearing dollars to explaining earnings growth with tortilla dough — Solman has illuminated hundreds of economics stories on topics both sober (NAFTA, Cuba, Social Security reform) and light (the workings of the circus and the NFL). In recent years his NewsHour reporting has included a sevenpart series on the rise of China and a series on the business response to global warming. He has taught at Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program and is the BradyJohnson Visitor in political economy at Yale University. This year on The NewsHour, Solman has been doing a year-long series, “America’s Response to Globalization,” exploring the global economic challenges facing the United States, including such issues as the manufacturing renaissance in the Midwest, the export revival in California, the alternative energy revolutioin in Pittsburgh and how to create the next generation of competitive Americans. Addressing everything from cell phone exhibitionism to people walking four abreast on the sidewalk, it was also a New York Times bestseller. Naomi Wolf S U G G E S T E D

Feminist, social critic, and political activist Naomi Wolf raises awareness of the pervasive inequities that exist in society and politics. She encourages people to take charge of their lives, voice their concerns and enact change. Wolf’s landmark international bestseller, The Beauty Myth, challenged the cosmetics industry and the marketing of unrealistic standards of beauty, launching a new wave of feminism in the early 1990s. The New York Times called it one of the most important books of the 20th century. Wolf’s latest book, The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, is an impassioned call to return to the aspirations and beliefs of the Founding Fathers. Wolf shows how events of the last six years parallel steps taken in the early years of the 20th century’s worst dictatorships. All the World’s a Stage: From Exclusion to Inclusion Change, Hope and Equality for Asian-Americans

Tony Award-winning actor B.D. Wong is one of America’s most versatile performers. He plays forensic psychiatrist, Dr. George Huang, on NBC’s Law and Order: SVU. His character, Father Ray Mukada, on the HBO series, Oz, made him a cult favorite. Wong’s impressive list of film credits include Father of the Bride, The Freshman, Seven Years in Tibet and Disney’s Mulan, but it is in the theater that Wong first gained national attention. His Broadway debut in M. Butterfly earned him the Tony Award, Outer Critic’s Circle Award, Theatre World Award, Clarence Derwent Award and Drama Desk Award. He is the only actor to have won all five awards for a single role. In his book, Following Foo: The Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man, Wong recounts the personal drama that he and his partner endured on their path to parenthood — involving a surrogate, an egg from his partner’s sister and identical twins born 13 weeks prematurely and needing months of intensive care. The lessons Wong has learned in order to survive and excel in a vocation fraught with rejection and racism have given him a keen perspective on diversity. Lauded for their resonant and inspirational messages, his presentations address many issues including racial selfimage, Asian-American parental pressure and the “model-minority myth.”
