Edward Albee Playwright Edward Albee has defined modern American theatre with four decades of provocative, controversial and brilliant plays. A three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, The New Yorker has called him “the greatest living playwright.”
Suggested Topics: An Evening with Edward Albee
Readings by Edward Albee
Albee is perhaps best known for his 1962 drama, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It won both the Tony and New York Drama Critics Circle Awards and is widely considered a classic of American contemporary theatre. His first play, The Zoo Story, opened in 1959 and tells the story of a drifter who acts out his own murder with the unwitting aid of an upper-middle-class editor. The play effectively gave birth to American absurdist drama, and Albee was immediately hailed as the leader of a new theatrical movement.
Special Program:Available for residencies
The State of Theater and the Arts in America
Albee’s groundbreaking plays explore the most intimate aspects of our society. A Delicate Balance, Seascape, The Death of Bessie Smith, and Three Tall Women are just a few titles that illustrate Albee's passion for examining features of our lives we might not always recognize. In his lectures Albee describes the power of the arts as a catalyst for change. He believes that art should be dangerous, that it should reveal all our shortcomings and complacency -- hopefully inspiring us to live more fully. "The job of the arts, " says Albee, "is to hold a mirror up to us and say: "Look, this is how you really are. If you don't like it, change." His play The Goat or Who is Sylvia won 2002 Tony Award for best play. He is also a Kennedy Center Honoree, was awarded the national medal of Arts, and received a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theater in 2005. Albee had three plays produced in New York during the 2007-2008 season: Peter and Jerry with Bill Pullman; a revival of his one-act plays, The American Dream and The Sandbox; and Occupant about Louise Nevelson. His most recent play, Me, Myself and I, opened at the McCarter Theater in January 2008, and had its off-Broadway debut in the fall of 2010. It garnered as much controversy as it did admiration among theater critics and audiences.
"Witty and intelligent...his passionate defense of the arts spurred a standing ovation." - University of Missouri Columbia
This spring, the Arena Stage Festival at The Mead Center for American Theater honored Albee with 26 staged readings of every play he has produced since the late 1950s, as well as their 2011 American Artist Award. Albee is the 2011
recipient of the prestigious Edward MacDowell Medal for Lifetime Achievement.

Elizabeth Alexander Poet and Yale professor Elizabeth Alexander made history as the fourth poet to compose and deliver a poem at a presidential inauguration. The daughter of a civil rights advisor to President Johnson, she came full-circle reciting her poem “Praise Song for the Day” on the same Mall where she, as a child, witnessed Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. In 2009, Alexander became chair of Yale University’s Department of African American Studies where she also serves as the Thomas E. Donnelley Professor of African American Studies. She will explore “African American Arts Today” during the Spring 2012 DeVane Lecture series at Yale, a featured course open to both students and the general public. Alexander’s collections of poetry and essays, which explore issues of race, gender and politics include American Sublime, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her most recent book, Crave Radiance: New and Selected Poems (October 2010), is her first retrospective volume. Her work was selected and published in Caroline Kennedy’s poetry collection, She Walks in Beauty: A Woman’s Journey Through Poems (April 2011). A graduate of Yale and Boston University, she holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania. Alexander was the very first recipient of the Alphonse Fletcher Sr. Fellowship for work that "contributes to improving race relations in American society and furthers the broad social goals of the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954." Her other awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, two Pushcart Prizes, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. She was featured on the PBS 4-part series, Faces of America, tracing her family lineage back some 37 generations all the way to Charlemagne, first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Alexander has also appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, PBS NewsHour, and The Colbert Report. A long-time advocate of the arts as a critical element of civic dialogue, Alexander once remarked, “Poetry is not meant to cheer; rather, poetry challenges, and moves us towards transformation.” She recently chaired the National Book Awards for poetry. Her upcoming projects include delivering the Toni Morrison Lectures at Princeton University in 2013 and a Library of America anthology covering 300 years of African American poetry.

Maziar Bahari Iranian-Canadian journalist and documentary filmmaker Maziar Bahari was arrested in Tehran while reporting on the 2009 presidential election protests and held in solitary confinement for most of his 118 days in captivity. He was accused of “masterminding the coverage of the Iranian election by the Western media” and being a spy for the Mossad, the MI6, and the CIA. Bahari has been a correspondent for Newsweek for over 10 years, covering Iranian economic, political and cultural life. Soon after protests erupted over charges that President Ahmadinejad had stolen the vote, he was picked up by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard and sent to Evin Prison, which is notorious for torturing political prisoners. He was repeatedly beaten and forced to give a false televised confession. After international pressure mounted and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed interest in his case, he was released on $300,000 bail. Bahari's riveting memoir, Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival, was published by Random House in June 2011. The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart has optioned it for a feature film.

"What happened to me,” says Bahari, “really symbolizes something bigger than me – the shift from a clerical state to what is increasingly a military dictatorship. I was maybe unlucky to be able to explore some of the darkest sides of the Iranian government, the revolutionary zeal, and the corruption. But I was lucky to be able to come out and talk about it." An Iranian court sentenced Bahari in absentia to an extended flogging and more than 13 years in prison on various charges, including conspiring against national security and insulting the supreme religious leader. His documentaries have covered a variety of subjects: Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany (The Voyage of The Saint Louis), an Iranian serial killer (And Along Came A Spider), AIDS in South Africa (Of Shames and Coffins), and Iraqi children detained in military prisons ( Children of Abu Ghraib). A retrospective of his work was organized by the International Documentary Film Festival, and The ILEX Foundation honored him with the Award for Excellence in Iranian Cinema. His latest film is Iranian Odyssey. Bahari's story of resilience in the face of repression were the subject of a 60 Minutes segment and a Newsweek cover story. He has appeared on Fareed Zakaria GPS, The Daily Show, and Charlie Rose.

Avraham Burg Political leader, author and activist Avraham Burg has been a prominent figure in politics for nearly 30 years. The youngest speaker in the history of the Israeli Knesset (1999-2003) and a strong advocate for peace in the Middle East, Burg was the first speaker to invite his Palestinian counterpart to address the Israeli Knesset as well as the Dalai Lama. Burg’s career in public service began as a Peace Now activist during the 1982 protest movement against war in Lebanon. Burg then served as an advisor to Prime Minister Shimon Peres on Diaspora before becoming a senior member of the Israeli Labor Party. First elected to the Knesset in 1988, Burg built an impressive legislative record before resigning in 1995 to serve as the Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel. As Chairman, he oversaw the immigration of nearly half-a-million Jews into the country and helped recover Jewish property taken during the Holocaust. Despite having grown up in the religious Zionist movement, Burg advocates a progressive approach to the Middle East conflict that begins with reconciling the past to make the future more promising: “All of my life I’ve been an activist of the peace camp…I’m ready to go a very long way to bring people together from dialogue to acceptance and than compromise.”

Burg’s worldwide bestseller, The Holocaust is Over; We Must Rise from Its Ashes, (2008, English) argued that the Jewish nation has lost the ability to trust itself, its neighbors and the world because of the Holocaust. Burg uses his own family history – his father was a Holocaust survivor – to inform his innovative views on what the Jewish people need to do to move on to live in peace with their Arab neighbors and feel more a part of the world at large. Burg’s newest book, Very Near to You: Human Readings of the Torah, is slated for publication in 2012. Recently, he launched an online community in support of Very Near to You that encourages people to debate and discuss the role of the Bible in the modern world. Burg is the Chairman of Mifalot, the largest sport for development and peace social project in the Middle East. Burg’s articles have appeared in The Guardian, the International Herald Tribune, he also blogs regularly for The Huffington Post.

Carol Gilligan Psychologist, professor and novelist Carol Gilligan is best-known for her groundbreaking book, In a Different Voice, which Harvard University Press described as "the little book that started a revolution." In naming her one of the 25 most influential Americans, TIME magazine said Gilligan's work "changed the voice of psychology," forcing us to take into account the differences between men and women, boys and girls. Published in 1982, In a Different Voice made women and girls' voices heard in their own right and with their own integrity for virtually the first time in the social sciences. Translated into 17 languages with more than 800,000 copies in print, it transformed the way we think about gender, human development and moral behavior. Following her research on women and girls' development, Gilligan studied young boys and their parents and explored impasses in man-woman relationships. Her work continues to inspire political debate, new research, and initiatives in policy and education.

Gilligan's novel Kyra was described as a “deeply emotional and a thinking person’s love story” by The San Francisco Chronicle. Her play, “The Scarlet Letter,” co-authored with her son, is a re-visioning of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic. In her latest book, Joining the Resistance (April 2011), Gilligan reflects on the evolution of her thinking. The central conviction of her work today – and the central thesis of this book – is that the requisites for love and citizenship in a democratic society are one and the same.

Joe Klein Columnist for TIME and bestselling author, Joe Klein is one of America’s best political journalists, known for his provocative and probing analysis of events in our nation’s capital and abroad. His weekly column, “In the Arena,” which covers national and international affairs, won the National Headliner Award for best magazine column. A veteran of 10 presidential campaigns, Klein has been praised for his “dogged reporting, a thorough, subtle grasp of issues, and a clear-eyed, compelling style.” In an age of "armchair columnists," he insists on reporting the facts for himself, traveling to war zones overseas — including frequent trips to Afghanistan, Iran and the Middle East — and on campaign buses at home, in search of the truth. He is the rare political junkie who loves the intricacies of policy-making, has extensive sources not only in the U.S. Government, but throughout the world, and is at home as much in Damascus as he is in Des Moines.

Louise Leakey Paleontologist, conservationist, educator and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Louise Leakey is the youngest member of the famous Leakey family of fossil hunters in East Africa. With an adventurous spirit and unwavering focus on the advancement and understanding of human origins, she has spent much of her life leading expeditions into the remote badlands of northern Kenya. From these groundbreaking forays, Dr. Leakey and her team have yielded some of our deepest insights into what it is that makes us human. Her team, The Koobi Fora Research Project, has made discoveries that have shaped modern thinking on the journey of humanity over the past 4 million years. One of the most publicized discoveries, Kenyanthropus platyops, challenged the earlier theories on the path of human evolution. Whether the fossil can be classified as a new genus, separate species, or unique looking individual is still up for debate. From her earliest childhood spent among the nomadic desert people of Lake Turkana, Leakey has developed a deep attachment to the wildlife and cultural heritage of northern Kenya. Today she draws on her scientific background in human origins to work with the local communities in building a future for this region in a dramatically changing world. Leakey co-directs the state of the art research center in the Turkana Basin where the rigorous process of search, excavation, and paleoecological and geological analysis make it one of the most comprehensive sources of information regarding the origins and evolution of humans.

Dr. Leakey also works with wildlife authorities to preserve the unique flora and fauna of Kenya's remotest National Park and World Heritage Site. Additionally, she is involved with various community projects near the Ethiopian border, in an effort to improve the welfare of people on the National Park boundaries. She was recently selected to participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The aims of the summit revolve around better understanding the problems and risks the world faces in the future.

Meave Leakey Paleontologist and zoologist Meave Leakey is the standard-bearer of a distinguished family of paleoanthropologists who have dominated their field since the beginning of the 20th century. Her life-long search for clues about our past has led her to every corner of the remote, windswept semi-deserts of Kenya’s Lake Turkana Basin. Over the last four decades, the Koobi Fora Research Project, which she currently co-directs with her eldest daughter Louise, has unearthed much of the evidence behind our current understanding of our past. Dr. Leakey is presently focusing on the origins of our own genus, Homo, and the emergence of Homo erectus, the first human ancestor to move out of Africa. Her research focuses on the sites around Lake Turkana which are between 8 and 3 million years old. In 1999, 2000 and again in 2007 the project made sensational new discoveries of early Homo that indicate Ausralopithecus afarensis (otherwise known by the skeleton named “Lucy”) might not be the only species from which the human race descended. As National Geographic put it, Dr. Leakey's findings “challenge the straight-line story of human evolution.” The announcement of these discoveries was featured in Nature and The New York Times. Leakey is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence in recognition of the 50-year relationship between “the National Geographic Society and the Leakey family dynasty of pioneering fossil hunters.” She is also a Research Professor at Stony Brook University and was the head of the division of paleontology at the National Museums of Kenya for over 30 years. A masterful storyteller, Dr. Leakey conveys the importance of studying our origins in the context of the modern world with vivid images, real-life stories and provocative questions. “We are one species that originated in Africa,” says Dr. Leakey, “If we can understand our past, we can better understand our future.”

Richard Leakey Paleoanthropologist, political advisor and environmentalist Richard Leakey has been making international headlines for more than 40 years. He is the author of over 100 articles and books including Origins and Wildlife Wars: My Fight to Save Africa’s Natural Treasures. In 1999 Leakey was named one of TIME’s 100 Greatest Minds of the 20th Century. Son of the famous Louis B. and Mary Leakey, he and his family have been credited with some of the most significant fossil discoveries in history. Along with his parents, wife, daughter, and various other family members they have unearthed Proconsul africanus, Australopithicus boisei, Homo habilis, the footprints of Australopithecus afarensis (otherwise known by the skeleton “Lucy”), and the most intact early human skeleton ever found nicknamed “Turkana Boy"), and is referred to as being either Homo erectus or Homo ergaster.

Wildlife Wars:My Fight to Save Africa's Natural Treasures
In his 1995 book, The Sixth Extinction: Patterns of Life and The Future of Humankind, Leakey examined the five great catastrophic extinctions in the history of the planet. Written well before our increased environmental awareness, Leakey stressed how human beings are dangerously reducing biodiversity, damaging eco-systems and possibly precipitating the next major mass extinction, which could number humans amongst its victims. No stranger to controversy, Leakey entered the world of politics in 1994 by resigning as head of Kenya's Wildlife Service to assist in forming a political party in opposition to the country's corrupt government. Initially he was accused by the then President, Daniel arap Moi, of being a racist and a foreigner; despite having been born in Kenya. Surprisingly, in 1999, President Moi appointed Leakey into his cabinet in an attempt to pull the country out of a serious economic crisis. Leakey served as Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet until his resignation in 2001. Now a Professor of Anthropology at Stony Brook University and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London (FRS) in 2007, Leakey convened the Stony Brook World Environmental Forum and the Human Evolution Symposiums and Workshops. Leakey has served as Director of the National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service. He is Chair of The Turkana Basin Institute at Stony Brook and Transparency International-Kenya and recently founded WildlifeDirect, an online service that supports conservationists and allows anyone to play a role in the survival of the world’s most endangered species.
"The event was perfect. He was great. Everyone loved him. It really couldn't have been better. We got a lot of different people that we hadn't gotten before at our lectures and we also sold 200 books. It was terrific!" - Denver Museum of Natural History
In 2011 Leakey served as a consultant on the IMAX film Born To Be Wild, and in Spring 2012 The Sixth Extinction will be adapted into a movie that will be shown in IMAX theaters.

A Guggenheim Fellow and an NEA and NEH award-winner, Meyerowitz was the only photographer to gain unlimited access to Ground Zero after 9/11. Over a span of eight months, he took over 8,000 photographs of what he called "the forbidden city," capturing on film the monumental scale of the ruin as well as the moments of courage, compassion and solidarity during the recovery and clean-up. "To me, no photographs meant no history," says Meyerowitz. "My task was to make a record of the aftermath: the awesome spectacle of destruction; the reverence for the dead; the steadfast, painstaking effort of recovery; the life of those whose act of salvation has embedded itself deeply into the consciousness of all of us in America and around the world." An exhibit from his World Trade Center Archive has traveled to over 200 cities in 60 countries, from Kabul to Lima to Beijing, and a permanent selection will be at the World Trade Center Museum.

"I think it was one of the best evenings we've ever had at the temple. His delivery was absolutely outstanding. Not only are his pictures wonderful, but he just relates so beautifully with the audience. One person said it was a shame we didn't record it because his remarks really are equally as important, we felt, as his photographs. And he's an outstanding human being. I think we were fortunate to have him. I can't say enough about the evening." - Temple Beth-El

In his fiction, Mosley has explored the black experience in America over the past seven decades, beginning with the migration of African-Americans from the Deep South to his native Los Angeles in the post-World War II era and through post-Obama election-era New York City. He has created memorable characters like Fearless Jones and Socrates Fortlow, the sort of "fully formed, complex black men who have been absent,” he says, “from much of contemporary literature.”

His Easy Rawlins detective series began with Devil in a Blue Dress, which was made into a feature film starring Denzel Washington, and included The New York Times bestseller Little Scarlet. He is writing an HBO series based on the debut novel in his Leonid McGill series, The Long Fall; the pilot will be directed by Jonathan Demme. Mosley's third book in the series, When the Thrill is Gone, was published in March 2011. In his nonfiction, What Next: A Memoir Towards World Peace, Workin’ on the Chain Gang, and Life Out of Context, he has examined ways that we can contribute to political, economic, and social progress in America. Sylvia Nasar The first John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Business Journalism at Columbia University, Sylvia Nasar is known for the elegance of her prose and her megabestseller, A Beautiful Mind. A former economic correspondent for The New York Times, she also is the author of Grand Pursuit: The Story of Economic Genius in Modern Times, which has received rave reviews following its release in September 2011. Grand Pursuit is an epic, uplifting account of the making of modern economics -- from Victorian England to modern-day India -- and how the insights of various thinkers transformed the world. Nasar traces the development of a revolution in human thinking that was unimaginable 200 years ago -- the notion that the bottom nine tenths of humanity could escape the age-old sentence of endless poverty and a life of drudgery, that nations could shape their own destinies. The Nation described the book as "a timely reminder of the importance of the so-called dismal science...compellingly written, full of detail and vivid anecdotes, and with a refreshing focus on people rather than prices.” The Economist said, "Grand Pursuit deserves a place not only in every economist’s study but also on every serious reader’s bedside table."

Citing the 2009 bank bailout as an intervention gone awry, Spitzer’s methodical text suggests strategic ways the U.S. government and business world could coexist while initiating real change for both the global economy and public interest. The Booklist review praised his work, saying “This tract returns Spitzer to the original impression he made on the political scene as a scourge of Wall Street.”

Born and raised in the Bronx, Spitzer attended the Horace Mann School before studying at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs. After graduation, he attended Harvard Law School where he served as an Editor of the Harvard Law Review and worked for famed law professor Alan Dershowitz. In addition to his high-profile television career, Spitzer helps run the family real estate business and works as an adjunct professor of Political Science at the City University of New York teaching “Law and Public Policy” to undergraduate students.
