will always be an investment of life’s currency. Save it, spare it, there is nothing quite like the luxury of having time on your side. An elegant and timeless craft, the art of horlogerie, represents that luxury. CURIO Magazine translates this intricate watchmaking process into a series of artful conversations between you, our dear readers and these timeless creations. Every brand has its own story; a carried philosophy that makes it stand on its own. This is the point of our inspiration for this issue –for every issue. More than a curated timepiece journal, we conceptualized, designed, and produced to make every page a narrative to captivate your interest and perhaps bring this skillful practice into a better, brighter light of wider appreciation. Timeline Group had imagined this publication to become a visional timepiece of its own. With a number of features being presented, this editorial platform highlights the tremendous prestige and pride in owning these sophisticated pieces all interpreted in their distinct uniqueness, worth, and beauty. Alongside the admired trademarks, we introduce personalities who embody their brand narratives –individuals who practice good sportsmanship, pursue their passions, and exude character that aspires to make a greater change. As much as there is a wide array of conversations within this publication, Curio features each individual timepiece in vibrant portraits that captures creativity, craftsmanship, and passion. We hope that you will enjoy reading our custom magazine as much as we have enjoyed producing it.

For as long as anyone could remember, Torres had grown to love basketball. At the age of seven, it was his early introduction to the sport that led to a years’ rapport of training, dedication and commitment. Everyone knew he was meant to play in the court –including himself. It’s what he had grown to be passionate about. From his fresh solid stint in the La Salle Greenhills Junior Blazers, to his position as point guard of the De La Salle Green Archers, Torres’ stellar performance has made him a respectable rookie and game changing addition to the varsity team since 2012. His active lifestyle, versatility, and dedication raised him to become not only a good basketball player, but a committed teammate and an example of sportsmanship. Torres’ character makes apposite as No Curfew’s brand ambassador. And while he continues to aspire for greater opportunities, the emerging point guard will continue to rise within and outside the court. As one of the new faces of the No Curfew Watch Store, Torres will represent many modern and stylish watch brands such as Appetime, Wize and Ope and Alessi, etc.

Raised and cultivated by multiple walks of history and tradition, the Philippines is known for its seasonal and visually stunning array of festivities inspired by past events, ethnic culture and religious beliefs. Charge It We live in a digital and technologically connected generation. Photographs, internet access, and emergency numbers are all available in a single tap. It’s inevitable that gadgets reinsure your convenience at hand. Be sure to charge your cellphones, Ipads, and digital cameras the night before the event to guarantee your devices’ life span during the festivities.
04
Commode Commotion Let’s admit, restrooms make the biggest of differences in any situation. If the festivities are held outdoors, most chances are portable toilets will be available. Be sure to check the venue for any restrooms nearby within or closest to the main area since they tend to be cleaner. Alcohol, baby wipes and compact toiletries go a long way in case of emergencies.
05
Be Dressed for the Occasion Comfort is key. Weather-appropriate clothing is elemental in tropical countries especially in times when the climate can be challenging to predict. Note that in Mindanao areas, you should dress conservatively. Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in and bring a light jacket in case of colder temperatures when the sun sets.
06
Immerse in Culture Culturally diverse, it’s important to adapt to local customs and accept local differences. With ethnically divided groups, each region has its own distinct traits and traditions. Knowing them beforehand will be factor to your experience as you interact with them during your stay.
07
Every Step Counts Sturdy footwear is a valuable asset in the Philippines. Rain or shine, investing in a good pair can be very useful especially when wandering in different islands as there are lesser modes of transportation in the rural areas. On the brighter side, travelling on foot isn’t only cheaper but it gives you more time to appreciate your surroundings.
02
07
Finding Your Own Personal Space Anticipation comes with great preparation. It’s an undeniable fact finding a good parking space (or having one in general) can make a difference in your festival experience. From time, climate and venue, these details will become important factors as to what you have to prepare for. No doubt, the earlier you are the better chances there will be for getting your own spot.

Wine and Dine Festivities In the Philippines, local festivals are never a complete celebration without food in hand. Although most venues offer food stalls and drinks, be mindful that coming prepared can save you from a lot of stress and time from overtaking hungry customers and long lines. Don’t forget to try festival specialties either. The Philippines is made up of 7,107 different f lavors you have yet to discover.

The celebration involves an array of ethnic costumes, performing rituals and street dancing to the rhythm of the parade. La Naval de Manila Sto. Domingo, Quezon City 2nd Sunday of October This festival revolves around a carved ivory image of the Blessed Virgin Mary of La Naval, a gift given to the Dominican Fathers back in the late 1500’s. This nine-day novena is held at the Santo Domingo Church culminating with a religious procession.
Pintaflores San Carlos City, Negros Occidental November 3-5 Considered as one of the most colorful festivals celebrated in the Visayas, Pintaflores is a thanksgiving celebration of man and his environment featuring plentiful body art, dance dramas, and vibrant street dances. It is coined from two cultural activities, the Nabingkalan Tattoo Festival, where it was inspired by the word pintados meaning the “painted ones”, and the Dances of Flowers. Helubong Festival Lake Sebu, South Cotabato 2nd week of November Recognized for its diverse culture and scenic attractions, Lake Sebu is South Cotabato’s premier destination, home to our local dream weavers
Binabayani Festival Olongapo, Zambales Last week of November This celebration commemorates the battle between the Aetas and the Christians through an interpretive dance called “Binabayani”. It is a Sambal word meaning “bravery” and it is usually performed at the town plaza on the 30th day of November for the public to witness.
DECEMBER Sinadya sa Halaran Festival, Roxas City 1st weekend of December The Sinadya sa Halaran Festival is a joint celebration between the city of Roxas and the province of Capiz. It is a cultural and religious event in commemoration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, who is also the patroness of the city of Roxas. The festivities boast visually grand activities such as fluvial parades, lighted river floaters and a striking pyrotechnic display. Meguyaya Festival, Upi, Maguindanao 2nd week of December From being a quaint town to becoming a first class municipality in Maguindanao, Upi is a community composed of Christians, Muslims, and the Teduray people. The Teduray are considered to be one of the major non-Islamic ethnic groups of Mindanao. The Meguyaya festival is a thanksgiving festival not only to bring these diverse groups together but to promote and preserve Teduray culture.
JANUARY Sinulog Festival, Cebu City January 15 Sinulog in Cebu is one of the biggest annual festivals celebrated in the Philippines. It is a feast in tribute to one of our first historical conversions toward the Roman Catholic faith. It is also in honor of the Child Jesus, Santo Niño de Cebu. The celebration usually lasts up to nine days before the third Sunday of the month, and it is a grand celebration with one of the largest street parades and parties that could last the entire day. Bayluhay Festival, San Joaquin, Iloilo 3rd week of January Reflecting the Ilonggo’s historical and religious themes, the Bayluhay is a commemoration anchoring on the first Barter of Panay and the exchange of Malay-Aeta culture. These rituals are common rites of passage that evolved from the war dance or dinapay that was once practiced to superstitiously ward off evil. The celebration is also to venerate the landing of the ten Bornean Datus in Panay when the inhabitation of the Malays started surrounding the archipelago. Dinagyang Festival, Iloilo City 4th week of January An Ilonggo term for “revelry” or “merrymaking”, Dingayang was coined by the concept of the Sinulog and Ati-atihan festival. It dates back to the 1960’s when a replica of the image of Santo Niño was first brought into the San Jose parish. It wasn’t until a decade later when the festivities progressively grew into a more colorful affair when authentic Ati tribes would perform their native dances. Be sure to watch the performances from the grand stand.

The paper giants measure from up to ten feet and are four to five feet in diameter. The street event finishes in a fluvial procession in Laguna de Bay amidst revelry that continues until the image is brought back to its sanctuary.
Giant Lantern Festival San Fernando, Pampanga 3rd week of December The Giant Lantern Festival is an annual festival derived from a Christmas tradition during the Spanish colonial era called “lubenas”, which is a procession of saints lit by lanterns. The lanterns are created by each barrio from bamboo and other locally available materials. During the nine-day novena before Christmas, these parols are paraded around each barrio and then brought to the town church before the midnight of Christmas Eve.

With colorful masked street dancers and upbeat music, Masskara is one of the biggest and most popular annual events up to date in Bacolod City.

For several years, Mitch has dedicated her time and wins in order to support both local and international organizations. Whether it’s through winning gold by the reins or reaching out to children in different nations, Michelle is the paradigm for modern Filipinos in these transitional times. Here, we get to know her side of what it’s like to balance time between the philanthropy and profession.

With all these achievements and charity works, what else would you like to venture in? I would love to open a cafe someday. I think it’s something I have wanted and have been pushed to do for a while, but I’ve been too afraid to jump in as yet. I would also like to help the equestrian sport in our country, and build it up to be more accessible to others. We have a LOT of talented individuals in the Philippines, and I would love to be able to help showcase their talents. And then, of course, I would love to have a family of my own too –eventually.

From reining championships, family businesses, and volunteering for NGO programs, how do find balance between sports, projects, and family matters? curio
I have always kept a busy schedule because I find that I function77 best that way. With a tighter schedule, one is forced to stay organized. I am fortunate to have USANA Philippines as a sponsor through Team Frontier. The supplements they provide boost my health and energy which makes my busy schedule easier. I prioritize important commitments during the week, and work other things around it. My family is based all over the world (Australia, Hong Kong, Japan); so we keep a chat going on between us as well as time during the week to Facetime or Skype. My parents usually call in the morning and afternoon/evening, and if I’m available, I join them. Otherwise, I call in my own free time; so we see each other quite often.

With several NGOs reaching out towards communities today, how were you able to come across your current organizations like JustWorld and K.I.D.S (Kabataan Inyong Dapat Suportahan) Foundation, Inc.?
78 curio
I came across JustWorld International (JWI) while I was competing. I had been competing very successfully in Australia when I heard about JWI through a friend. When I qualified for the World Championships, I received a message from Jessica Newman, the president of JWI, and she asked me whether I would like to be an ambassador for the foundation. Once I learnt more about what the foundation did and how I could help, I was all in. I’ve been an ambassador ever since. K.I.D.S. Foundation Inc (KFI) was started by my boyfriend, Diether, in 2006. I learnt a lot about it when we first started dating, and I became involved in the foundation’s cause when I moved to Manila. Last year, I launched the KFI charity gala, “Celebrate to Educate”. It was a celebration in lieu of Diether’s birthday (he isn’t big on parties for himself, so he wanted to spend it annually with the less fortunate). Last year, the beneficiary of the charity gala was Bahay Pag-Asa, a juvenile delinquent “hope house”; which was started in Bacolod by my grandparents and the La Salle brothers. We also showcased an extremely talented youth orchestra from Pampanga, which was put together through charitable efforts.

It must be a great privilege to be an ambassador for K.I.d.s. and JustWorld. How does it feel being able to contribute towards communities on a local and international scale?
A lot of the children I have come across have lost their parents either through crime, abandonment, or death; and it is touching to see how much they grow when they are put into a “family environment again -- to see the light come back in their eyes, and see their hope and confidence reborn.

It is a most humbling feeling to know that little efforts put together can make such an enormous difference in underprivileged communities. When you are able to put yourself aside and truly help (physically, and in material ways), you not only learn about the communities you help; you learn a lot about yourself. It is such an eye-opener. I am more thankful, I think, to the individuals I have been blessed enough to meet than they will ever know, because I have grown from the strength they have shown me in their everyday lives. They have taught me to really value the simple joys of life, to let go of the worldly things that one can really live a fulfilled life without; and they have truly emphasized the value of family, communication, and community.

As a woman living in modern times, what do you wish for people to be more socially aware about? I really wish that people were more aware of the importance of family. I have found that marriage is grossly taken for granted in these modern times, and it has somewhat lost its meaning. Perhaps that would be something “old fashioned” I would love to take into modernity. A strong familial foundation is so important not only for the married couple, but also for any children they have and want to bring up as strong adults. The commitment to family sets up an individual for commitments elsewhere; whether at the workplace, sports, or even their own relationships later on. In knowing what family really means, and knowing that there is no “fast food mentality” / easy way out, one might find his/ herself stronger in his/her roots; in their core; and therefore more grounded and able to be more considerate towards others. There is a strong drive, commitment, and will power that comes with confidence in one’s roots and familial tree.
86 curio
I also wish that people could be more socially aware of the VALUE of people; regardless of age, social class, gender, and background. At the end of the day, we were all created in the same likeness, and by an all-loving, all-forgiving, God. I was a little culture shocked when I moved back to Manila and noticed that the underprivileged were more than happy to trade so much for their “15 minutes of fame”. I was baff led by the ridicule of the less fortunate on TV shows; all with the individuals’ full consent. We should be celebrating our countrymen in every way possible; not putting them down through public humiliation and having them think that it’s ok and funny. But that’s my two cents’. Our country is beautiful for more reasons than I can count. It’s surprising to me that so many want to be known as part of another nationality/race, when there is so much we can be proud of in our own Philippine skin. I do believe that the Filipinos need to learn much more about their culture, roots, and traditions, even before colonization. To be educated not only through schools, but also through the media (movies, tv series, and daytime shows) and the home.
If not at the field or engaging in charitable programs, what do you ideally like to do during your spare time? During my spare time I have found myself really enjoying spending quality time with close friends and experimenting in the kitchen on new dishes (my boyfriend loves to eat as much as I do, so I really enjoy experimenting on dishes; and I get a huge kick out of seeing that an experiment has been a success when he likes it!). I always make some time for my first love –the horses. They are my ultimate stress release and happy place, so a lot of spare time goes to quality time for myself and my four legged loves too.
