Let’s look at some specific elements in your work. For example, the posters for the Seine‑ Maritime Summer Festival in Normandy in the late eighties… Where did you get the idea for the graphic?

From the name “Festival d’été”. There were three typographical signs which interested me in conceiving the logo: the accent on the “é”, the apostrophe, and the period. I wanted to play with the three elements as if they were actors, dancers or musicians on a stage. The yellow, the grey and the red reminded me of a theatre stage when seen from above.

Did they appreciate this somewhat radical poster?

It was a little complicated, shall we say. The programmers liked it, for sure. But the audiences were a little surprised, they were used to— for dance anyway—seeing an image or a photo of a dancer on the poster, and for music, it needed to be a violin or something… I decided I needed to step away from this very literal interpretation.

Finally, let’s look at the poster for the 2015–16 season…

This year I decided to go in the opposite direction: having created or designed the letters for the previous seasons’ posters, I thought it would be interesting to use an existing font, Akzidenz Grostesk Neue—for its strong theatrical graphism.

You only see letters, a profusion of letters, as if they were fighting to survive, to stand out on the paper…

Yes, the letters overrun the space of the printed surface, almost saturating it: overlapping, bumping into each other, like a troupe of actors electrified by the stage, by the performance.

Their general placement, which seems arbitrary and intuitive, was in fact painstakingly shaped and balanced. The letters’ closeness creates a game of shapes and counter‑shapes, drawing them toward abstraction.

It’s a poster of great purity and simplicity.

That’s what I wanted: like the truth onstage, each sign reflects its most primitive identity: a spot of blue, green or red—together they create white light. And again, using a palette which brings us back to Sonia Delaunay.

What they had in common came from the two bodies of water framing Europe, like two wide horizontal parentheses: in the north, the Baltic Sea, in the south the Mediterranean. The festival’s title was in fact “Baltique-Méditerranée”. When I realized that the two bodies of water surrounded our enormous continent, I tried to show that on the actual surface of the poster, I wanted to show the letters on the periphery of the poster.

The word Baltique is on the top, like the corres‑ ponding Sea. Yes. At the beginning I had inserted waves in the central space but it was too obvious —so I chose that immense central space, like the vastness of the sea, but also the blank page faced by the writer, its inspiration, the idea of unknown territories…

To find my own concept I had no idea where to begin. I soon realized that the shawl could not be covered with a jumble of letters. If a poster is a flat image, one which has no reverse side, a Hermès scarf is above all an object. If the silk was printed with letters, they would show through on the other side, it would be a problem. I tried various ideas, working with the title of the book, the writer’s name, excerpts of the text… I didn’t like any of it, until I realized that inside the book there is a true structure. Barthes was interested in structuralism, so it was clear that he must have supervised every single detail of the layout of his book: the notes in the margin, the footnotes, the sizes of the different letters, the blank pages. The composition of the paragraphs was his first creation!

PHILIPPE APELOIG Born in Paris in 1962, Philippe Apeloig trained at the École supérieure des arts appliqués Duperré and at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (Ensad). After doing an internship at Total Design, in Amsterdam, he was hired by the Musée d’Orsay at the age of 22, to further implement the visual identity created for the Museum by Bruno Monguzzi and Jean Widmer. In 1988, he went to Los Angeles to work with April Greiman, a pioneer in digital design, and in 1993 he was invited to the French Academy of Art in Rome (Villa Medici).

In 1998, Philippe Apeloig moved to the United States for a period of five years, becoming a faculty member at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. He was also the curator of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography. He was the artistic director of the Louvre from 2003 to 2007, conceiving visual identities, posters, editorial lines, animations and experimental typography distributed by the Swiss Foundry Nouvelle Noire.

In 2014 he was the subject of a retrospective at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, and then in 2015 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Le premier travail graphique qui compte pour toi, c’est ton mémoire de stage chez Total Design, à Amsterdam ?

Oui. C’est l’agence qui m’a formé, qui m’a vraiment ouvert l’œil — et ce n’est même pas moi qui ai eu l’idée d’y postuler. Lorsque j’étudiais aux arts appliqués, j’avais pour professeur un merveilleux calligraphe nommé Roger Druet.

Il m’a initié à la typographie. Quand est venu le temps de chercher un stage, je ne me voyais pas, comme les copains, atterrir dans une agence de publicité et passer mes journées à accomplir des roughs. 3 Quand commence ton premier travail de graphiste ?

Durant mes études, pour gagner ma vie, je réalisais des illustrations pour la presse : 20 Ans, Cosmopolitain, Télérama… Je ne les montre jamais ! Mon premier vrai travail, c’est la réponse à une annonce en 1985 : Musée d’Orsay cherche un graphiste, besoin d’expérience.

Passons à des éléments spécifiques de ton travail. Commençons avec ces affiches pour le Festival d’été de Seine-Maritime…

D’où t’est venue l’idée graphique ?

Du nom « Festival d’été ». Il y avait trois signes typographiques qui m’intéressaient pour concevoir ce logo : l’accent sur le « é », l’apostrophe, et le point final. J’ai eu envie de jouer avec ces trois éléments comme s’ils se transmuaient eux-mêmes en acteurs, en danseurs, ou en musiciens sur un plateau.

Le jaune, le gris et le rouge me rappelaient, quant à eux, une scène de théâtre vue d’en haut.

Ce travail assez radical fut-il apprécié ? Ç’a été compliqué de faire passer ça.

Aux programmateurs, c’est sûr que ça leur a plu.

Le public, lui, a certainement été déstabilisé parce qu’avant, pour la danse, l’affiche attendue ou souhaitée devait représenter une photo de ballerine ; pour la musique, un violon…

Il m’a semblé primordial de dépasser ce côté très littéral.

Penchons-nous sur l’exposition Cézanne à Aix-en-Provence, qui se tint en 2006 : l’idée était de montrer des peintures de Cézanne à l’endroit où elles étaient nées…

Exactement : en 2006 avait lieu le centenaire de la mort du maître précurseur du cubisme, de cette figure majeure de l’histoire de l’art, que j’admire tant. Indépendamment de la beauté de son œuvre, c’est le personnage qui me fascine par son isolement, son refus de suivre les tendances, et son désir de se développer esthé-

Les couleurs, c’est en examinant la palette de Cézanne. Même si c’est un peintre de la lumière, il y a trois teintes chez lui qui reviennent sans cesse : le vert de la nature, le bleu du ciel, et l’ocre des tuiles provençales. Sur l’affiche, le logo répété, déstructuré, avec ses parties manquantes, me paraissait reconstruire de façon très abstraite sa manière de décomposer la nature selon un système précubiste… En fin de compte, pour l’anecdote, l’affiche n’a jamais été diffusée parce que la Ville d’Aix a finalement demandé une reproduction de peinture !

Observons les affiches produites pour le Théâtre national de Toulouse : le rapport à la typographie ici est très singulier, n’est-ce pas ?

Oui, ce sont des typographies expérimentales.

Penchons-nous, enfin, sur l’affiche de la saison 2015-16…

Cette année, j’ai souhaité prendre le parti inverse : après avoir inventé ou dessiné des lettres pour chacune des saisons précédentes, il m’a semblé intéressant de replacer au centre de l’affiche une police de caractère existante : l’Akzidenz Grostesk Neue —précisément employée pour l’identité graphique du théâtre.

On ne voit que des lettres, un torrent de lettres, comme si chacune se battait pour exister, pour s’imposer sur le papier…

Oui, les lettres envahissent l’espace de la surface imprimée, jusqu’à tout saturer : se chevauchant, se percutant, comme une troupe d’acteurs électrisés par la scène, et par la performance. La disposition générale, qui apparaît arbitraire et intuitive, a été minutieusement façonnée et équilibrée. La proximité des lettres entre elles impose un jeu de formes et de contreformes, faisant tendre le tout vers l’abstraction.

C’est aussi une affiche d’une grande pureté, d’une grande simplicité.

Certaines lettres sont sectionnées… Pourrait-on dire qu’un graphiste joue sans cesse à couper, à abîmer son alphabet, dans le dessein d’effleurer la limite de la lisibilité ?

Un graphiste qui s’intéresse à la lettre, oui.

Leur point commun provenait de deux mers qui encadrent l’Europe telles deux larges parenthèses horizontales : au nord la Baltique, au sud la Méditerranée.

La fête s’intitulait Baltique-Méditerranée.

Lorsque j’ai pris conscience que, physiquement, ces deux mers s’opposaient autour d’un énorme continent, j’ai essayé d’en rendre compte sur la surface même de l’affiche. Je voulais suggérer que les lettres se trouvaient en périphérie.

Le mot Baltique se situe en haut, comme la mer correspondante.

Oui, car le mot vient encadrer une terre.

Au début, j’avais inséré des flots dans l’espace central, mais c’était trop chargé — et j’affectionne désormais ce vide central, qui s’apparente à l’immensité de la mer, mais aussi à la surface blanche de l’écrivain, à l’inspiration, à la terre inconnue…

C’était le seul intellectuel à s’intéresser à l’image ou à la lettre : L’Empire des signes, Mythologies, La Chambre claire… Pour trouver mon idée, je ne savais pas par quel bout commencer. J’ai vite compris qu’il ne fallait pas que le châle soit affublé d’un amoncellement de lettres. Si une affiche reste une image à plat — qui n’a pas de verso —, un carré Hermès est avant tout un objet. Sur une étoffe frappée d’un texte, des lettres auraient été visibles à l’envers, ce qui aurait posé problème. J’ai malgré tout cherché des pistes en découpant le titre du livre, le nom de son auteur, en sélectionnant des extraits… Rien ne me convainquait, jusqu’à ce que je m’aperçoive qu’à l’intérieur du livre, il y a une vraie structure.

Barthes était marqué par le structuralisme, et cela me semblait évident qu’il avait dû intervenir à tous les niveaux de la mise en page de son ouvrage : sur les notes dans la marge, en bas de page, sur les tailles de caractère différentes ou sur les pages complètement blanches, etc.

La composition des paragraphes était sa première création !

Du fait de leur nature « hybride », les chiffres 2, 3, 4 ou 5 ont été les plus compliqués à concevoir.

Avec ce système, nous revenons à la racine des chiffres — à la racine des lettres.

Le sens issu des formes les plus basiques m’a toujours fasciné : le signe typographique, à l’image des sept notes de musique, ne peut naître qu’en présence d’une composition raisonnée de fragments impénétrables.

Je m’y suis habitué tout de suite, parce que ç’a été une délivrance. Avant l’informatique, la composition d’un texte ou le façonnage d’une typographie inédite se révélait tellement compliquée, tellement technique, il fallait tout compter, tout calibrer — et je suis nul en calcul.

Avec l’ordinateur, tout à coup, n’importe quelle typographie devenait modifiable, modulable d’une façon tellement moins contraignante…

Le premier avantage fut donc un gain de temps ?

Une liberté ! Une liberté incroyable : c’était comme un paquet de bonbons avec lequel on pouvait jouer… La créativité reprenait le dessus sur la technique. En revanche, l’aspect négatif de l’informatique est qu’il eut tendance à un peu tout formater, parce que nous employons tous les mêmes logiciels, les mêmes outils. Il y a du pour et du contre, comme partout.

Encore une fois, j’ai essayé de découvrir ce qui était inscrit à l’intérieur même du titre que l’on m’a donné. Lorsque je me suis rendu compte que le chiffre 101 était contenu, d’une certaine manière, dans le mot « ROBES » j’ai trouvé ça extraordinaire. Ensuite, j’ai souhaité que le support évoque la création de la robe, mais pas la robe finie.

Ton travail d’affichiste a fait l’objet d’expositions régulières, dont dernièrement Using Type, au Stedelijk Museum d’Amsterdam — ce qui constitue un beau symbole au regard de ton parcours et de tes inspirations. Pour figurer ta précédente rétrospective (à Aix-en-Provence), tu étais revenu aux fondamentaux de ton art : le vide, la lettre, et la forme. Le tout, comme on peut le voir, fonctionne en noir et blanc. C’est l’aboutissement d’un travail d’épure.

PHILIPPE APELOIG Né à Paris en 1962, Philippe Apeloig se forme à l’École supérieure des arts appliqués Duperré et à l’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (Ensad). Après deux stages consécutifs chez Total Design, à Amsterdam, il est engagé par le Musée d’Orsay à 22 ans, pour mettre en œuvre l’identité visuelle conçue par Bruno Monguzzi et Jean Widmer. En 1988, il part pour Los Angeles travailler avec April Greiman, pionnière du design digital, avant d’intégrer en 1993, la Villa Médicis à Rome. En 1998, Philippe Apeloig s’installe aux États-Unis pour cinq ans. Il est recruté Full time faculty par la Cooper Union School of Art de New York, où il occupe aussi la position de conservateur du Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography. Directeur artistique du Louvre de 2003 à 2007, concepteur d’identités visuelles, d’affiches, de lignes éditoriales, d’animations et de typographies expérimentales diffusées par la fonderie suisse Nouvelle Noire, il fait l’objet en 2014 d’une rétrospective au musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, et en 2015 au Stedelijk Museum d’Amsterdam.
