EVERYWHERE
Since the beginning of Design Friends, one of our ambitions has been to present the diversity of design through its many and varied disciplines.
With this in mind, we are very happy that Lottermann and Fuentes (Photography Design — D), Super Terrain (Graphic Design — F), Eike König (Art Design — D), Christopher Noelle aka Tofa (Light Design — A), Dennis Hinze (Sports Product DESIGN IS
In a multicultural place like Luxembourg we are used to living and working together with different nationalities, but even here, the cultural background of the region has a strong influence on the codes of visual expression.
To give us a holistic view of the creative world in which we live, it’s important for us to reach out and embrace the many possibilities which design allows. Through more than 60 conferences and events, Design Friends has brought us together with guest speakers who hail from 15 countries, active in 25 disciplines.
Thanks to our contact with these artists and designers, we’ve all had the opportunity to discover new aspects of design and to learn more about disciplines we are very familiar with. There’s great pleasure in being surprised at what others make with the same materials we use every day, seeing common problems solved in uncommon ways. From this we gain a cross-cultural insight into the nature of creativity.
Design — D), Klasien van de Zandschulp (Interactive Design — NL) have all accepted our invitation to come to Luxembourg, so that we can continue to share our passion and exchange ideas on trends and traditions.
Documentary films about designers or design themes from all over the world are another anchor point for the Design Friends programme. Having organized our own film related events for many years, we began collaborating with the organizers of Luxembourg City Film Festival 6 years ago. Their expertise, enthusiasm and industry connections open a whole world of choices for us. Our cinematic programming reflects this expanded horizon.
Happily, entry to our conferences remains free for everybody who loves design. This is possible because we can count on the support of our long-term partners and our members. We would like to thank them warmly for being the strength which brings us together.
Enjoy discovering the Design Friends programme. And, if you like what we do, let’s meet at one of our events and talk about becoming a member ;-D

LOTTERMANN AND FUENTES
Nada Lottermann and Vanessa Fuentes’ strong childhood bond set the foundations for their successful, joint career in photography. Their distinct photographic style was shown in the Galerie für Moderne Fotografie in Berlin and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. In their exhibition, entitled “PING PONG”, they present playful pictures that were often spontaneously, yet precisely, executed.
For various clients as Dr. Hauschka, Item M6, Sisley, Closed, Vogue, Cartier, Lacoste, Lala Berlin, & Other Stories, Wolford and more they work, live and laugh together. And with magazins like FAZ Magazin, Stern, GQ, Monopol, Die Zeit they are bonded with ongoing portraits and stories.
“We shoot with an analog flash or use daylight to have this intimate feeling of being part of the vibe. We are flexible to change the angle of the shoot as we shoot with 2 cameras and 4 eyes and we don’t have big light construction. The pictures always look familiar. The portrayed like good friends. Probably also because a photo session with Lottermann and Fuentes is more like a meeting with old acquaintances. Somehow, however, the images emerge. Each time differently and in a different way. But always with the same familiarity.” Nada Lottermann and Vanessa Fuentes

Noir Néon, vue d’exposition, le Bel Ordinaire 2022SUPER TERRAIN
Super Terrain is a graphic design collective run by Quentin Bodin, Luc de Fouquet and Lucas Meyer, founded in 2014, based in Nantes and Marseille.
Super Terrain work on posters, visual identities, books, websites, scenography and signage. They produce work which is always sympathetic to context, taking into account both physical form and intended use.
This busy French studio brings together many disciplines, partnering regularly with photographers, writers, printers, web developers and makers. Working with these diverse skills, they offer clients a careful blend of savoir-faire to build a shared vision and a trust-based relationship.
Their production process often takes inspiration from practical design skills. For example, involving classic printing techniques, innovative lighting rigs and larger installations. But the ST collective is equally at home in the digital realm, producing video and interactive works which carry over some of their obvious love of ‘real’ hands-on creative expression.
Alongside their commercial work, Super Terrain continue to build an artistic practice. Through creative residencies and self-initiated editorial projects they develop works which explore the nature of the artist-designer’s tools, of images and their reproducibility. These experiments refine and extend the studio’s graphic design practice in the realm of story-telling.
Artistic freedom and creating work with meaning beyond income or likes.

CHRISTOPHER NOELLE AKA TOFA
From his career as a bike trials pro rider he learned early to see things from another point of view, a different perspective. Imagination and the search of thrill remained in every project that followed up since then. Today he looks back on 20 years of experience in Lightpainting photography and projection art and still finds new challenges as a creator.
Noelle mapped the Brandenburger Tor, worked with a robot on realtime generated Lightpainting at Ars Electronica and used surface reflections of a Porsche for its unvealing premiere. You can say that Christopher really lives multimedia art. For his latest project he invented the Holo-Painter — a tool that allows the fusion of fiction and reality by combining projection, photography, motion graphics and real surrounding.
If you sum up his compendium, the full spectrum of multimedia opens up from photography to film, to animation and motion graphics, to illustration and calligraphy, to painting and mapping projection, to sound design to NFTs, to typography to sculptures — for the artist it is a permanent evolving cycle, continuously triggering new ideas like a perpetual motion machine. >

VECTOR SCRATCH PAINTING, 2022 Using a pen plotter to scratch precise vector graphics into fresh paint.
> The interaction of human, space and machine and the associated transformation process between the analog and digital world are the core themes of his work and studies. On the creative side, Noelle is bringing science and art together and by the conversion of robotics, motors and machines to artistic useable tools he creates astonishing results.
Painting with light is based on imagination and a clearly structured sequence of actions, it’s about taking control of the sources. Besides control, errors and imperfection are also essential components of the creative process. “Sometimes the clean result is less impressive than the one where I tumbled upon an obstacle in the darkness.” Noelle also painted his studio black so he can work in the dark during the day.
Noelle’s talk at Design Friends will take you on a journey from darkness to the light at the end of the tunnel, opening new perspectives of how to be and stay creative.

KLASIEN VAN DE ZANDSCHULP
Klasien van de Zandschulp is an Amsterdam-based interactive artist and creative director at studio affect lab. She designs story-based and participatory experiences, blending digital/physical and online/offline interactions. Her work explores sensory design, embodiment, rituals, augmented realities, human interaction and (radical) thoughts around our daily technology consumption.

The Luxembourg City Film Festival 2023 will take place from 2nd until 12th of March 2023. This year will be the sixth time that Design Friends has been a partner for this event. Our co-presentations so far have included, “Big Time” (about Barke Ingels’ architecture) in 2018, “Rams” (about life work of Dieter Rams) in 2019, “Design Canada” (about Canada’s heritage of graphic design) in 2020 and “33 words about design” (about design in Russia). Then, in March 2022, we showed “Mau”, a documentary that follows the unlikely story of design visionary Bruce Mau and his ever-optimistic push for massive change, at Utopia cinema.
The programme of the Luxembourg City Film Festival 2023 will be published later this year, so, for the moment, only the ‘date to save’ is known — Wednesday, 08/03/2023. Until the film selection is announced, we have the pleasure of anticipation!
You can find more details about the 13th edition of Luxembourg City Film Festival very soon on their new website: www.luxfilmfest.lu
