Safety Enhancement 3 - Temporary Cycle Track

WHAT

A cycle track is a protected bike facility that combines the user experience of a separated path with the on-street infrastructure of a conventional bike lane. A cycle track is physically separated from motor traffic and distinct from the sidewalk. In situations where on-street parking is allowed cycle tracks are located to the curb-side of the parking lane.

WHY

• Eliminates risk and fear of collisions with over-taking vehicles.

• Reduces risk of ‘dooring’ compared to a bike lane, and eliminates the risk of a doored bicyclist being run over by a motor vehicle.

• More attractive to a wide range of bicyclists at all levels and ages.

BENEFITS

• High impact, high visibility implementation project

• Fulfills an important public desire & goal of Downtown Strategic Plan

DOWNSIDES

• Complex, relatively expensive project with many touch points and engineering needs

• Difficult approval process
