PART 1: ATLAS OF COLUMBUS LANDMARKS

PART 2: URBAN IDEAS FORUM

BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

In its 44 year history, Columbus Landmarks has produced numerous studies and reports that have highlighted critical buildings, sites, and neighborhoods which are worthy of extra efforts toward preservation. As part of an advocacy initiative over the last few years, we’ve inventoried all of these reports into one cohesive geographic database, what we’re calling the ‘Atlas of Columbus Landmarks’. We’ve compiled the highlights of these reports into this summary document, and we’ve also created an online interactive web map. Additionally, we’ve included various historic resources such as sites on the National Register of Historic Places or sites listed on the Columbus Register of Historic properties.

In thinking about the future of historic preservation, Columbus Landmarks has created an initiative called the Urban Ideas Forum. This is meant to generate input from our members and the public about the types of sites that should be included in our advocacy efforts and might be future sites to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We believe that hearing from many perspectives will inform us in creating a more prosperous future for Central Ohio through preservation.

We believe this Atlas provides a holistic view of the historic resources of Central Ohio and will be an incredible tool for our members and for allied professionals. The ‘Atlas’ will be a living document and we anticipate adding more information over time.

Moving forward, we will continue to add sites to our Atlas that are generated through the Urban Ideas Forum. These sites may become places that we advocate for through our Most Endangered Sites lists and other initiatives, or they may be included in future educational and event programming. Overall, the goal is to have the entire community shape the conversation around historic preservation and quality new design.
