Introduction Creation stories vary wildly from one culture to the next, from myths and legends, to organized religion, to simple folk tales. So we decided to write our own. We set out to create a series of myths and folktales explaining the creation and formation of different objects, animals, and experiences. Creating stories to explain why things are the way they are, and where they came from. Each story is an exploration, a style of its own, drafted from it’s creators mind. In Egyptian mythology the world started out as a chaos of churning water, known as Nu. Out of Nu came the air holding up the sky above the earth with the sun and moon moving along its body

Viracocha is the great creator god in Inca mythology. Viracocha was one of the most important deities in the Inca pantheon and seen as the creator of all things, or the substance from which all things are created, and intimately associated with the sea. 2

At Tropos Incorporated, we begin creating clouds by figuring out how many clouds the Earth will need, what type they should be, and where they need to be sent. Dedicated statisticians, meteorologists, and scientists in the Tropos’ Research Department work out how to put the right clouds in the right place at just the right time. Once it is determined how many of each type of cloud is needed, we begin our cloud making process in the laboratory. In the Tropos labs, cloud chemists produce the basic structures of the clouds. These specialized scientists have spent a lifetime perfecting just the right combination of water molecules, dust particles, air temperature, and wind to create the amazing array of clouds we see today. 5

After the basic structure of each cloud is ready, it is sent to Product Testing. In the Cloud Test Chamber, these rookie clouds are tested for cloud opacity, precipitation volume, color, thunder volume, and atmospheric buoyancy. During product testing, one of Tropos’ daring Cloud Testers puts their life on the line to make sure the clouds are safe for atmospheric use. Each Tester works very closely with the Product Testing Supervisor to ensure each cloud’s precipitation, shadow, and thunder are just right, and record the results in the Tropos cloud database. If any rookie cloud fails to pass Product Testing, it is sent back to the laboratory to work out the kinks. Once a cloud passes the product testing stage it moves on to Manufacturing.

Once in Manufacturing, the basic cloud structures really “gather a head of steam”. Each cloud needs to build layers and layers of water molecules or tiny ice crystals depending on how high in the atmosphere it needs to go. In the huge Manufacturing Hall, professional Cloud Technicians carefully add each layer of water molecules and just the right amount of dust to the primary cloud’s base structure. The finished clouds are then sorted and sent by huge pipes to the Distribution Units.

The final step in the creation of clouds is distribution. The assembled clouds are pumped from Manufacturing to the Distribution Units. This is where the clouds are released to take on the different cloud forms that we see. Like water flowing through the nozzle of a hose, the diameter of Tropos’ cloud-stacks determines the shape and density of the clouds, and the altitude at which they will settle in the sky.

Based on Tropos’ success in the cloud market, we hope to provide changing precipitation, varying temperatures, interesting cloud patterns and astounding sunset colors for centuries to come; making the lives of Earth’s residents a little more interesting.

Kirsten E. Benson Tropos Incorporated: Supplying the World’s Clouds Since 1903 I am inspired by the ability of a designer’s to suggest a new perspecitve on how others view the world. I am still a child at heart; and enjoy finding inspiration in the ordinary small things in life, as well as awe in the grand things. I relish my childlike imagination and hope to rekindle this whimsical creativity that is often lost with age. The inspiration for this story was the view of the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant coolant tower while driving to NC State from home. The view of the vapor from the tower mixing with the clouds prompted the thought: “That looks likes it’s a cloud factory!” When the opportunity arose to write this creation story, it was a perfect chance to indulge my inner child. I hope this inspired your inner sense of wonder and that you enjoyed my story. 12

Tyler Brown Annahilation: A Creation Story This story was influenced by my love of cartoons and comic books. While I’ve worked on a number of art and design projects previously, this is my very first multi-page comic. The main idea explored is contrast. The contrast of comic book blood, guts, and gore directly meets a typical cartoon world highlighting the usual differences between the two in (hopefully) an entertaining and unexpected way. Though I’m relatively new to storytelling, I’m finding it to be a very fitting form of expression. With it, I’m able to worry less about saying something grandiose with my artwork and instead just try to make something fun and entertaining. www.tylerraybrown.com 22

Lauren Caddick The Creation of Guac Lauren is a senior Park Scholar majoring in Art and Design and minoring in Film Studies at North Carolina State University. When not in the studio, she enjoys working as a Scenic Artist at University Theater, making short films, and finding treasures. Brandon Crews Evolution of the Drum This story was an exploration of a cubism inspired visual style. I wanted to let the visuals tell the story and create motion throughout each page with the foreground and background working together. As the story progresses the visual style evolves from straight cubism to from my own more polygonal 3D visual style. My background is in 3D modeling and animation, yet this was an interesting change with bringing this into 2D digital painting. 42

Terror swept through the water and all the fish scrammed, as up from the depths streamed an oozing black strand.

It now seemed quite likely that their peaceful home, would ever be shrowded by this dark unknown. 47
But fear slowly subsided, the fish settled back. The terror of the strand all oozing and black, now seemed rather needless, for ‘twas nutrient rich. And it swirled through the water good for all the fish.

They gained bright rich colors, new plants started growing. Alive was the ocean all swirling and flowing. The danger averted, much to their relief. And that was the start of the very first reef.

Andrea M. Danchi “The Reef” This story is a myth about the creation of the very first reef. The premise of the story is actually psychological. When something dark and unexpected happens to us we tend to panic and lose sight of the good things in life. We become convinced that the immediate darkness following the “disaster” will shroud our lives forever. Just like the nutrient rich liquid that comes up from the ground in this story and ignites the life necessary for the beautiful reef to grow, often the darkest moments of our lives shape the most beautiful parts of our character. Out of the darkness often come the best and most rewarding times in our lives. It is my hope that this story reminds you to look for the positive in every situation and to wait patiently for the light that follows the even greatest darkness. 52

The Jackalope’s Antlers Mark Farris is a twenty-two year old human male. He attended the NC School of Science and Mathematics, then went to UNC Asheville for a year before getting bored and transferring to NC State, where he is, at the time of this writing, a junior/ senior. He has a wide variety of shallow interests, which makes him an expert at very little except crosswords. He can often be found in studio making ‘art’ or outdoors looking at things. He does not 62

In the far reaches of the north, nestled in a valley surrounded by frigid winter mountains, there was a village. This village, the only source of light in all of the northern region, was held captive by a mysterious Beast which dwelled within the mountains. The Beast had long, oily hair that it would use to construct tangled webs around the mountains. These tendrils of hair would reach out and snatch deceased souls as they traveled heaven. The beast would take its captured prey and devour them whole, its mouth glowing from the presence of the consumed souls in its body. The souls, unable to reach the peace of the afterlife, existed in agonizing turmoil. Their screams echoed throughout the landscape, bringing misery and devastation to those in the small, snowy village who felt they could do nothing to help their deceased loved ones. One villager decided to rise above the helplessness the rest of the village inhabitants felt towards the gluttonous Beast and left to embark on a treacherous journey to find and kill it. After traversing the mountainous labyrinth for what seemed like weeks, the Villager stumbled upon one of the Beast’s webs and freed the souls that were tangled within it. Sensing a disturbance to one of its traps, the Beast revealed itself to the Villager, bent on stealing its prey back. The two battled until the Villager was able to pierce the stomach of the Beast and release all of the souls which were trapped within it. Upon the Beast’s death, all of the souls which were trapped in its webs were released, able to finally find peace in the afterlife. On their return to heaven, the souls gathered in the cold, dark sky and put on a mesmerizing display of dancing lights to show their gratitude to the Villager who saved them. On nights when the moon is hidden and the air is crisp with the scent of coming snow, the souls return to rain down a beautiful display of light to show their eternal thanks to the brave Villager.

Stephen Lindberg How Did Jonny’s Fingers Get So Long? Jonny is just trying to enjoy himself on the weekend. Is that too much to ask? It seems every time he gets one second to himself, it’s non-stop about the fingers. “The fingers, again?” Jonny ponders to himself (on an almost-weekly basis). Life’s hard when you’re the son of a retired circus freakshow. The kids at school will never let him live it down! He’s getting really angry these days, and I’m kinda worried that something is gonna put him over the edge! We try our best to keep sharp things out of his reach whenever one of his so-called friends feels like making a joke at his expense. 102

Josh Malchuk What Happened to the Woolly Mammoths? I am a student in NC State’s School of Design. Although I don’t see much of a stylistic or technical correlation within my breadth of work so far, one way my work reflects me is that I enjoy making people smile. I enjoy creating pieces that are playful, clever, or silly. This varies depending on what medium I’m using, but I mostly enjoy drawing with pencil or pen. Digitally, I love working in illustrator because I am intrigued by the versatility of vectors and stylized simplicity I get with the program. Being a student in the College of Design, I have had some great opportunities to experience other fields of design aside from art. I have gained a much better appreciation for and understanding of graphic design and would love to have a job that marries my 112
love for illustration and typography post-graduation.

Lynn Masters Why Are Barn Owls White? Illustration has always been, and I suspect always will be, a form of escape for me. The creation and development of a separate little world in which creatures and patterns and shadows flourish is something that constantly occupies my thoughts. This story is an indulgence in my favorite modes of illustration: pen and ink and charcoal. Referencing the styles of Maurice Sendak and Jon Kenn, I sought to fill each page with an atmosphere unique to the story of the Barn Owl’s transformation into a forest guide. 132

Jillian Ohl Creation of a Night Creation of a Night was inspired by the rituals that girls go through during the whirlwind process of getting ready to go out with their friends. As girls we often place much of our self-worth in our physical appearance along with believing that “the better I look, the better night I will have�. When in most cases the reality is far from that. Girls just wanna have fun, but just give us at least two hours before hand so that can happen. About the Creator: I am a illustrator/designer originally from Winston Salem, NC. I enjoy all of the lovely things in life such as ponies, peonies, and puppies. I find inspiration from popular youth culture, nature, and fashion.

Emma Ptak Beauty Beauty is about the journey of one young woman who, like many, is told by the media that surrounds her that she is inherently not good enough. From the covered mirror at the beginning of this story, indicative of her displeasure with herself amidst these messages about beauty, to the uncovered mirror at the end, her journey is one of recognition (I am being brainwashed) to realization (I am losing myself in these messages) to rejection (I am going to turn off these destructive messages) to reclaiming (I am powerful and beautiful as I am). 182

Christopher Rinehart Wailing of the Wraiths: The Origin of the Pipe Organ Wailing of the Wraiths tells the story of an innocent wanderer who becomes hypnotized by a melody they hear out of nowhere. They get drawn to the music’s origin in a sort of trance. When they finally arrive, they realize that the music is billowed through the throats of thousands of deceased. By that time, however, they have already departed from their sanity and have become obsessed with holding power over this choir of corpses. The previous musician who drew the wanderer in gives up their seat at the keys and takes their place among the corpses, adding yet 192
