Structure Level 2 Connected to protected steel columns, this structural system is based on a 30’x30’ grid, with open web steel joists connecting to each of the beams.

HVAC Plan Chilled Water (Chiller) System - Water Cooled A water loop in the chiller cools air that is circulated by the Air-Handling Unit, while the boiler heats a coil that heats this circulated air when needed. The cooling tower helps to remove unwanted heat through this system. An air recovery ventilator aids in the exchange of fresh and stale air from the outside.

Accessibility In an effort to make this structure available to all, there is a heavy emphasis on making it as accessible as possible. Every person, no matter what their level of ability or disability, should move through the spaces in this building the same way. The strong axis connecting The Oval to the trails and vegetative space on the ground level is intended to be a long and thoughtful walk, causing an individual to feel the large scale of these buildings, and to move toward an open space in nature beyond. I wanted to make sure everyone could go on this journey, no matter which direction of travel. Not only are there stairs, but there is an accompanying ramp for those who need it. At every landing there is a connection between the two, allowing users to determine their own path of travel. 1 - Area of Refuge: Every stairwell has two spaces for an area of refuge, with each space meeting the min. requirements of being 30”x48”, while maintaining the required egress width. 2 - Outdoor ramp becomes part of experience of moving between buildings. Follows 1:12 ratio, and thoughtfully incorporates connection to stairs at the required 30’ landing placement. 3 - Ramp in atrium allows ALL individuals to experience this open space. Follows 1:12 ratio and aligns with outdoor ramp 30’ landing requirements. 4 - Min. corridor width: 63”. ADA Min. Width: 60” 5 - Elevators smartly located in central vertical circulation areas. Door width: 48” (ADA min: 36“), Car dimensions: 86”x75” (ADA min: 80”x54”) 6 - Common work spaces wide enough for tables and passage through, with railing space for anyone to access to view into atrium. 7 - All entries on Level 1 and Ground level to be level with the outside for ease of entry and exit from buildings. 8 All toilet rooms ADA compliant with handicapped stalls and 5’ diameter turn-around allowance 9 - Grad school patio is level with walkways for anyone to access and use.
