Buildings are experienced through section. It is through section that the qualities of space are formed, light curated and forms expressed. In my design of the NC State Graduate School + Poole College of Management Building, large skylights and atriums scattered throughout the project give hierarchy to spaces of pause and interaction. These spaces allowed for a seamless integration of universal design and accessibility with the overall design intent. Circulation between the 3 volumes occurs where they converge, in the form of a ceremonial staircase and centralized elevators which are adjacent to a voluptuous, light filled atrium. The design minimizes corridors, instead users circulate through dynamic open office spaces to access classrooms, offices and other programs. Movement through the various spaces is centralized, direct and transparent, but more importantly it is shared by all users regardless of how they journey between them.
