CONSTRUCTING GREAT DESIGN.

MY DESIGN PROCESS In the past, I thought design was about making things look good. I still do, but after designing for awhile I learned it is much more than that. I believe great design begins with a strong, structured foundation. My design process is, after thorough research and concept development, to structure my designs in the simplest form possible. A simple, functional design foundation. Once my designs have a strong foundation, I allow the target audience to dictate the design style, carefully preserving the design structure. This process greatly enhances the overall user experience. I use tools to aid my design process, including: drawing inspiration from real life, sketch books, mind maps, site maps and wireframes for web and mobile design, and photography.

The world is full of inspiring objects that can be used in design. I often use real-life inspiration when creating identities. The process shown here is of an identity I did for Buck Camo. I sketched the buck using simple shapes and refined the shape through many iterations.

All of these tools help to build that strong design foundation I mentioned previously. I allow the target user to dictate the style of the design, but it’s important to me to throughly understand the user and keep the user in mind throughout the entire process. PARADISES OF UTAH | High-end Real Estate
Paradises of Utah is a Real Estate company that specializes in selling high-end homes all over Utah. Their services are geared mainly towards home owners who are looking to sell. The homes must have a value of at least $300,000 and pass a broker’s inspection. They market to their target audience using modern design elements and advanced technology as key selling points. Virtual Glass is one of those advanced technology products used exclusively by Paradises of Utah to market their listings. It is a Corning Glass display that runs Paradises of Utah’s app, allowing potential buyers to view virtual tours of homes from the listing’s front yard. The app requires visitors to sign in, both securing a seller’s home and capturing all leads that view the virtual tour. All virtual tours are filmed by professionals employed by Paradises of Utah to ensure the best quality virtual tours possible. The company’s main goal is to become the leader in high-end home sales after only their first year of existence.

NIKE | Divide. Conquer. Repeat.
When it comes to Lebron James, you either love or hate the guy. Unless you’re from Cleveland, then you loved him, hated him, and now you love him again. I, on the other hand, have loved the guy since day one. In my opinion he is the best player in basketball today. He is also arguably the best dressed player in the game. I am a huge fan of his shoe line, and wanted to create a series of posters and t-shirts that capture the essence of Lebron and his shoes. I illustrated three of my favorite Lebron shoes and created a campaign based off of those three shoes called Divide, Conquer, & Repeat. I created a poster and a t-shirt for each of the shoes.

The posters are simple because they were designed based off of the Sachplakat style of poster. I stuck with that style for each poster and t-shirt design (which is featured on pages 20-21).

CAMP SITES | Camp Site Sharing
There are lots of amazing camp sites out there, but it is hard to find one without trial and error or speaking with someone who knows the area. Not anymore. Camp Sites is an app I designed to allow users to share their favorite campsites with others. A user can search for camp sites near their current location, see the activities available at each site, plan their meals, schedule a camp site, and invite friends to camp with them. The style of the identity, the branding, and the app have an organic feel and utilize outdoor photography whenever possible. The natural feel of the product is meant to appeal to avid campers and outdoorsmen which are the target audience. The purpose of the app is to inform users of the best camp sites in their area and influence more people to enjoy the great outdoors.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE | Scary Fun Running
Run For Your Life is a sound-based fitness app. It is a game based off of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) in which you are guided by a narrator that is trying to keep you from getting caught by a number of different things that are chasing you. The first game mode is zombies and later game modes include bulls, cops, and natural disasters. A user can unlock achievements, track statistics, set goals, and control how far or how long they run. Tracking statistics is very important to the target user so I thought of new ways to track statistics. The Apple Watch offers great new technologies that can be used to enhance user experience. I’ll discuss those more on page 36. The purpose of the app is to make HIIT more enjoyable.

BACKCOUNTRY.COM | 2014 Gear Guide Publication
One of my favorite companies is located right here in Utah. That company is called backcountry.com. Backcountry.com focuses on outdoor sports, clothing, and gear. They are experts in the industry and are quickly growing on a national level. Every pair of sunglasses I own, plus about 80% of my clothes, were purchased from backcountry.com. Even though I wish I could keep them a secret, I also want others to know about this awesome company. I came up with a hypothetical publication for backcountry.com. The November issue I designed was a gear guide. The publication contains spreads about who the company is and what their values are, gear reviews, and advertisements. I wanted the guide to look professional, yet feel edgey and break a few rules which are characteristics backcountry.com shares.

Backcountry.com boasts a mountain goat as their logo. Mounatin goats are strong and resiliant. I wanted the structure of each page to be just as strong as a mountain goat and as edgey as the rocks that they climb.
by Toni Johnson by Toni John
Cody Townsend: “The goat, much like men, can seem out of place in the mountains, but somehow, even with their gangly characteristics and mysterious nature, they thrive in the biggest, baddest, and gnarliest mountains in the world. Unlike deer, bears, and birds, goats go high into the mountains and stay there—through thick and thin, blizzard and storm, season after season. They truly represent the toughest of mountain creatures.”

He’s on my skis, poles, expedition notebooks, cases, fuel bottles, and, of course, water bottles. He’s a studly little dude and doesn’t seem to mind when one of his horns or legs gets ripped off—he just keeps going strong. He’s a perfect ambassador for the outdoors as he’s tough, reliable, sure-footed, and swift, just like the company he represents and the environment he thrives in. The backcountry.com goat has become synonymous with having fun in the outdoors, and when I see one on a car, I know a kindred spirit is inside.”
Pip Hunt: “You can relate to the simplicity and power of the goat. It’s an animal that’s more accessible, one that you’re more likely to see in the mountains. The goat is for everyone.”
44
Shaun Raskin: “The mountain goat has the unique ability to survive and thrive in the alpine environment. Strong, graceful, and seemingly playful, these hoofed beasts congregate on shear rock faces, mountain tops, and the most rugged mountainous locations. Their presence is a welcome sight to any mountain traveler, a symbol that you’ve made it to the rough and wild lands, that you’re progressing on your path. You, like the goats, excel in the wild spaces of our world, choosing to live among the harsh climates, open to Mother Nature’s whim. The goat and you are one, sharing in a commitment to mountain living, to traveling and exploring the natural folds of our Earth together and rejoicing in all of its wonder.”

TASKO | Task Management App
Tasko was born from the idea that there were no attractive task management apps on the market. While I no longer believe that is true (i.e. Wunderlist), I wanted to design a more simple and attractive task management app. The target audience consists of designers, art directors, and project managers. Tasko is an iOS8 app and was designed to feel like a native iOS app. I wanted the app to feel sexy and inviting, while still maintaining user-friendliness. Other task management apps on the market offer more features than necessary, so I decided to keep Tasko’s features to the bare minimum. The main features are the task list, the calendar, and the ability to set alarms and notifications.

WE ARE | Anti-Bullying Group Project
We Are is an anti-bullying campaign aimed at shining a spotlight on our connection to other people and creating a space to reflect on how our personal actions affect these people. Whether you have been a victim of bullying, know someone who has been bullied, or have been the bully yourself, we are all connected to this issue in some way. We Are emphasizes that the solution to the problem of bullying starts with each one of us. As individuals, we can choose to treat people well and encourage others to do the same. We Are was a group project in which each member of the group created their own mini anti-bullying project. Each project was based off of a word that could fill in the blank in the phrase: “We are _______. The words we chose were united, connected, worth it, human, and in control. Because each project turned out quite different from the others, I designed a website to unify all of the projects. The website became a platform for others to be able to add their own project to the anti-bullying movement. My individual project contribution was an app I designed to be a safe, social platform where victims of bullying and former bullies can share videos of their stories and offer support to one another through comments.
