WELCOME, WEEKEND HOUSE KIDS from Barcelona, Spain. Sisters, owners, and business women, Irina and Cristina Gonzalez started their Weekend House Kids dream in 2018. While new to the DLK growing collection, Weekend House Kids has been met with nothing but adoration. Inspired by nature and contemporary art, each collection is filled with natural hues, bold prints, and the occasional splash of color. With a comfy, over sized silhouette, and unisex design, their garments are sure to withstand the test of time, trends, and tough love while allowing kids to be kids. Their Autumn/Winter 2020 collection, THE ART OF INTUITION pays tribute to the first female art collector in history, Peggy Guggenheim. She was a woman who without understanding art, but thanks to her great intuition, collected works of the best contemporary artists in history. The AW20 collection is a walk through the different aspects of her life, from her figure as an icon to her pets and her beloved city of Venice.
BEHIND T HE SCENES owners, Irina and Cristina Gonzalez were gracious enough to give us the inside scoop on all things WHK Weekend House Kids is still a small and growing business. Aside from being the owners, what role do you play? Irina: I’m the general manager and handle production. Cristina is the designer and art director. Between the two of us and our suppliers, we manage it all! Why did you decide to focus on children’s clothing? We definitely took an interest in children’s fashion when we became parents! We love it because there aren’t any limitations! You can imagine anything and everything and design every garment as a cartoon piece. My sister and I decided to create Weekend House Kids because we like comfortable and easy clothes (not to mention easy to clean). We like clothes that make us and our kids feel like we’re living in a weekend house the whole year. Why did you chose to focus on sustainability for your collections? It was a must when we started WHK. We believe in sustainable production AND consumption. For us, it’s not just the use of organic cottons and other sustainable or recycled materials. It means working with manufacturers close to us also - all our suppliers are within 2-3kms from our office. It wasn’t easy to get it all set up, but we worked together so that we could bring our customers 100% fair trade garments.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your collections? Cristina: As the designer, I’d have to say the arts. I’m very influenced by the big masters of contemporary art. If you could only choose one print or color from your collections to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be? For us, we would choose navy blue, and if we had to chose a print, it would probably be Cuca, a drawing from our first collection, dedicated to one of our dogs. What is most important to your own wardrobe, texture or color? Color first then texture. Do you have any old clothes you cannot throw away? The classic Burberry trench from the 80s! I bought it 10 years ago! Do you have a favorite luxury fashion house or designer? Jil Sander and Loewe! They both have phenomenal designs! I love their oversized silhouettes and their play of monochrome pieces. If you could choose any profession besides fashion, what would you choose to do and why? Landscaper or any work related to nature! Literally anything that allows me to stay in contact with the beauty of this amazing world we live in!
