GENERATor
Higher Recent flooding in Queensland’s coal rich Bowen Basin region left many mine operations isolated and without power. The answer? Helicoptering in a fleet of Onsite heavy duty silenced generators to ensure productivity was unaffacted by the lack of road access. Onsite generators are all equipped with certified centre lift points that enable them to be dropped in and out of confined areas and regions with limited road access.
Another example of this the adjacent photos of a 200kva Onsite generator being lowered into the foundation of one of Sydneys highest profile residential developments.

Powering Remote Accommodation Camps This issue’s tech talk deals with the opportunities for cost saving that exist when powering remote accommodation camps or villages. Many of Onsite’s customers operate in remote locations where staff accommodation is at a premium and is often delivered via the construction of remote accommodation camps that run on Diesel Generators. ONSITE’S METHOD The intra-day load fluctuations experienced by remote accommodation camps present opportunities for material cost savings in power generation. Essentially, peak load occurs for 6 hours per day on average during shower and meal preparation times in the early morning and late afternoon. Load for the remaining 18 hour cycle is commonly 30%-38% of this peak load.
24 |
Typically a remote accommodation camp with occupancy of greater than 40 persons will produce a peak load of between 2.8 and 3.5 amps per phase per person. As a rule of thumb, regions with an ambient temperature of 40 degrees celcius and above will use 3.5 amps per phase per person as a peak load estimate and 1.3 amps per phase per person as a base load estimate. This estimate has proven accurate within an acceptable margin of error on many sites throughout Queensland, Western Australia and other high ambient locations. TRADITIONAL METHOD OF SIZING AND POWERING SITE CAMP POWER Traditionally camp loads have been estimated by consultants using power assumptions ranging from 5kva (6.95 amps) per person and above. This peak load was then used to determine generator size. One generator of this size was employed to provide prime power and a second standby unit of the same size is used as a standby.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE OF COMPARING TRADITIONAL AND ONSITE METHOD CAMP OCCUPANCY: TRADITIONAL LOAD ASSUMPTION: TRADITIONAL SOLUTION: ONSITE LOAD ASSUMPTION:
100 PERSONS 6.95AMPS PER PHASE X 100 PERSONS = 695AMPS PER PHASE 1 X 675KVA (75% LOADED) GENERATOR RUNNING, 1 X 675KVA GENERATOR STANDBY PEAK 3.5AMPS PER PHASE X 100 PERSONS = 350AMPS PER PHASE BASE 1.3 AMPS PER PHASE X 800 PERSONS = 130AMPS PER PHASE
ONSITE SOLUTION:
3 X 335KVA GENERATORS, 1 X RUNNING 24 HOURS, 1 X RUNNING TO ASSIST WITH PEAK LOAD AND ONE REDUNDANCY
In the above example, a 675kva generator is running 24 hours per day in the traditional solution. The Onsite solution uses an engine half the size to provide the 18 hour per day base load. The fuel savings using this method are significant.

REGIONALROUNDUP

EASTERN

WESTERN SOUTH WEST
NORTHERN
The last 12 months have seen a lot of exciting changes in Eastern Region. The introduction of power products and lighting has gotten off to a flying start and has been matched by the rapid growth of our access products in the Hunter Region.
During the month of October 2010, including the Acquisition of IFCO, both Healy Rd and Lace St branches merged into one. Over the past 12 months the branch has grown not only physically but also financially it has made significant progress.
Our events team have welcomed the addition of crowd control equipment, 16 pan toilet blocks, drink stations as well as power and lighting equipment. Our mining and heavy industrial customers have continued to show us great support and is currently our fastest growing sector.
Over the time of the merge, our team has worked well together to make the new site a productive and safe environment to work in. Having recently signed the lease for the property next door, our site will expand yet again covering close to 45 thousand square meters, and with our rapidly expanding fleet this extra space will be vital for our growth.
The year began with a bang for Onsite in the West with the integration of two business Onsite and Statewide. We have not only managed to get through the integration but we have accelerated our growth well past what was an ambitious budget. It is such a great reflection in the people we have had that have guided the Western Region through this phase. Safety has been a priority and we have managed to role out an integrated Safety program across the region. We have also managed to grow our customer base by over 25%, we have met our contractual obligations with our major customers which has seen the extension of our contracts with Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton Iron Ore. While all this was happening our asset team managed to land nearly $40 million in new assets to help us achieve the outstanding first half to FY12.
Like many of our customers, the floods and cyclones in January certainly presented some challenges for the Onsite team Since then, we have gone from strength to strength, beefing up our Mackay Branch and adding Emerald, Moranbah and Gladstone to our Central Queensland network. Our Surat Branches at Chinchilla and Roma have expanded dramatically as Onsite strengthens it’s commitment to servicing the Surat to Gladstone Gas Corridor. We have also significantly expanded our fleet range to include pumps, skid steers and mini excavators with more products in the pipeline. This year has also seen Onsite Northern create new customer service positionswith the recruitment of highly skill specialists to compliment the very experienced team here in Northern; our capability is certainly growing and we are well placed to meet the demands of our booming market.
