ME Dubai welcomes Azza Al Qubaisi as its Artist in Residence
Zaha Hadid and is part of ME Dubai’s efforts to highlight the contributions made by Emirati women to the nation’s growth.
Azza Al Qubaisi is a self-represented contemporary Emirati artist, and a fierce advocate of all that is homegrown and sustainable. She is known for taking risks and experimenting with metal and natural materials, showcasing her bravery and outspoken nature. Her takeover of ME Dubai’s The Atrium encompasses the unveiling of “Dune,” a largescale sculpture inspired by sand dunes and their never-ending and shifting sand patterns and will reflect and complement the fluidity of the interior space of ME Dubai, which was designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid. In keeping with this year’s Emirati Women’s Day theme of “Inspiring Reality… Sustainable Future,” Azza’s latest sculpture is made of rusted mild steel, which gives it an earthy hue and sandy texture, and it mimics the lightness of the sand by containing light within.
One of Zaha Hadid’s last projects, the Iraqi-British designer’s first hotel, ME Dubai, represents a strong connection to the culture and women of the Arab world. Designed in Hadid’s signature curvaceous style, the interiors of the hotel note inspiration from the golden sand dunes of Dubai and her famous intensely futuristic architecture.
Azza Al Qubaisi’s Dune will compliment ME Dubai’s architecturally inspiring venue, a testament to Hadid’s unique design style and will symbolise the endless beauty, serenity and tranquillity of sand dunes as it moves in conjunction with the curves, sharp angles and bold materials of the hotel.
MEDubai, the only hotel in the Middle East designed completely inside and out by Dame Zaha Hadid, continues to set the bar on the local art and culture scene with the announcement of Emirati contemporary artist and entrepreneur Azza Al Qubaisi as its Artist in Residence. Launched in celebration of Emirati Women’s Day, this creative collaboration will see Azza Al Qubaisi’s stunning sculpture, Dune, adorning the hotel’s The Atrium by
Azza Al Qubaisi enthusiastically commented: “I’m delighted to be bringing a piece of my creativity to one of Dubai’s most beautifully designed hotels – ME Dubai. As an artist, I feel honoured to have my artwork displayed in such a beautiful space, designed by Arab artist Zaha Hadid, which is a testimony to my heritage and culture, and honours Arab women artists. As a symbol of artistic talent and female representation, I can identify strongly with ME Dubai. In celebration of Emirati Women’s Day and to commemorate trailblasing women in the UAE who continue to empower others, Zaha Hadid’s spectacular architecture and interior design of the hotel are the ideal complements to my sculpture, Dune.”
Guests visiting ME Dubai will also be able to witness four additional captivating sculptures by Azza Al Qubaisi on display in the gallery space, including Abjad 1.1 (Ha’a), Noon Al Nisswa, Star, and a scaled-down version of the Dune, all of which tells a distinct story. Azza’s stunning artwork will be on display at ME Dubai until October 31, 2022.

Stickman Tribe brings local culture and cheer to the W Hotel Dubai Lobby Lounge & bar
Stickman Tribe created the designs for the lobby lounge and bar for W Dubai Hotel. The design firm was commissioned to create a narrative that would be consistent and conveyed throughout the hotel. They carefully curated the lobby lounge and bar at the W Dubai Hotel to reflect the local atmosphere.
The W Hotel Lobby Lounge & Bar has been redesigned to reflect the vibrant culture and landscape of Dubai. The regional flair transforms the space into a lovely tapestry. The space is divided into three
areas — brought together by a central hub — and welcomes guests to the halqa of Mina Seyahi, a mystical bazaar, in the style of traditional story circles or “Al Halqa.” Guests can enjoy a cocktail or a meal in the lobby bar and lounge while immersed in a fantasy world. Cheeky, playful, passionate, and hypnotic adventures create the ideal atmosphere for the space.
Stickman Tribe chose motifs reminiscent of local magical folklore when redesigning the space.

Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ) has delivered their second facility for the group, following the successful launch of the Ladybird Early Learning Centre Dubai in 2016.
The new Ladybird Nursery Al Barsha marks the third campus in the city for the group, which
includes Ladybird Nursery JVC Dubai, and the second designed by GAJ.
The scale of the classrooms is governed by the age groups which in turn defines the placement of sizes of various elements in the teaching rooms. The youngest children are placed nearest to reception for ease of access for buggies, while the one to twoyear-olds have their wing with an internal garden and links to the
“The skill of role playing is an important part of learning through a child’s environment, and this is reflected in our interiors,” said Jason Burnside, partner at Godwin Austen Johnson. “We have created a landscape in the main play areas that features symbols of familiar objects such as houses and fences with modular cutouts of free-standing buildings adding tangible elements to the scenery.”
Open classrooms and shared learning spaces throughout the nursery create a sense of unrestrained and boundaryfree environment while the abundance of natural daylight through skylights and the large, glazed façade helps promote an optimum learning environment for both children and teachers.
Walls and adjoining facilities are kept to a minimum to encourage flow and avoid inhibitory barriers and additional innovative learning and social spaces have been created within the nooks and corners of the building. Small, coloured pods in the shape of small houses, have been added as storage spaces. From the initial point of entry fixtures and fittings are appropriately scaled to children’s height and appeal to their interests – a low counter in the reception area child-sized sinks and toilets and low shelving in the classrooms were all designed in keeping with the behaviour and user experience of the children.

In conversation with CHRISTOPHE GOURLAN, CSO, Hansgrohe Group, about the brand's recent participation at The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia, sustainability, new offerings, and long-term focus on Eco products.
This was Hansgrohe's first appear ance at The Hotel Show. How impor tant is visitor and client feedback for your company’s R&D for future developments?
It is indeed our first time here at The Hotel Show, and the feedback has been extremely positive. It has been almost three years since we engaged like this face-to-face at a showcase, and so it’s great to connect with our customers and hear their opinions and gauge
their reactions. Our products are designed to offer a water experience, and the best way to demonstrate this is through physical interac tion, enabling them to see, hear and touch – it’s a true sensory exploration.
There is a strong emphasis on sus tainability, and Hansgrohe ensures that the design and manufacturing of products are water-efficient without compromising aesthetics. How do you accomplish this combination? Water is life and our passion. We create inspir ing moments while protecting this precious element. In doing so, we take responsibility for people and the environment - for our planet. Sustainable thinking and action are deeply rooted within the Hansgrohe Group. As early as the 1980s, long before "sustainability" was on everyone's mind, the son of our founder Hans Grohe, Klaus Grohe, made environ mentally conscious thinking and action the maxim of Hansgrohe. And as early as 1990, Klaus Grohe said: "Climate change is not in the distant future, it is a reality. The whole of society must contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. We are setting the course today for the day after tomorrow."
At this year's Hotel Show at Riyadh International Convention & Exhibition Centre, HANSGROHE, a luxury sanitaryware specialist, displayed a full range of products under its AXOR and Hansgrohe brands.

With its brands AXOR and HANSGROHE, the Hansgrohe Group, based in Schiltach/ Southern Germany, enjoys a reputation as a leader in innovation, design and quality within the bath and kitchen industry. Founded in 1901 in the Black Forest, the company gives water form and function with its faucets, showerheads and shower systems. The 120-year history.
Hansgrohe was the first manufacturer in the German sanitary industry to publish its own sustainability report (2005), the water- and energy-saving EcoSmart technology (2007), the energy-saving CoolStart technology (2012), and the water-saving spray type PowderRain (2019).
Creating inspiring moments and water experiences means offering the best inclass comfort and usage of our products. A bathroom, being a place of relaxation where we spend more and more time, means that superb design is essential. Hansgrohe products offer great design and user-friendly shower solutions.
What did you showcase at the show? Briefly explain their key features.
All of our novelties from both our Hansgrohe and AXOR brands were showcased.
For Hansgrohe: Vivenis, Finoris, Vernis (with Ecosmart and CoolStart features).
For AXOR: AXOR One, AXOR Citterio, AXOR Edge, AXOR My Edition
AXOR offers the ultimate in personalisation, allowing unique customisation and the event allowed us to demonstrate this concept of individualisation. We are very keen to fully embrace the multiple challenges and pro jects that Saudi offers as it grows into a significant destination for tourism and commerce.
What excites you the most in the industry today and why?
People are spending more and more time in the bathroom. It’s no longer limited to a place where we jump into a shower to wash ourselves, but has become a place of relaxation, pampering and serenity where we can either invigorate ourselves for the day ahead or choose to unwind and relax. In recognition of this evolution, our strategy is to offer a holistic solution where design and performance work hand in glove. Our product portfolio is not just limited to faucets and accessories, but has expanded into shower and drainage systems, as well as ceramics, where great aesthetics and function combine, and we will introduce other elements too in the forthcoming months.
What significance do touchless, water-saving, and energy-saving products have for the brand?
more effective than being able to demonstrate face to face in a physical setting the combination of innovative design coupled with advanced technology.
How important is it for Hansgrohe to understand customer culture and values before introducing products in a specific region such as the Middle East?
It is really important. We may be a global operator, but learn ing about and understanding the local culture and adapting out technicalities, features and modus operandi to the market is essential. A key example is our stringent adherence to SASO (Saudi compliances) and ESMA (UAE compliances), and we are careful to consult with our local partners on the nuances of business etiquette and consumer behaviour so as to ensure appro priateness and alignment.
important it is to conceive designs and manufacture products that accommodate this progression.
In addition, with AXOR, our continued collaborations with outstanding designers, such as Barber Osgerby and Antonio Cit terio ensure consistent inspiration and limitless creativity. Originality coupled with a solid reputation for precision manufacture and the highest quality materials remains the ideal combination for exceeding expectations.
The Hotel Show must have given you some insight into the KSA market. How do you intend to expand in this area?

AXOR, a luxury brand, collaborates with some of the world's leading designers to create unique collections that are meticulously crafted with superior materials and finishes. The Hotel Show featured a wide range of innovative products.
What challenges does the company face as a German brand expanding into international markets like Saudi Arabia?
We are a world-wide group with over 5,500 people employed, so our approach is entirely global but we are careful to combine this with a local touch; we know that this is a real consideration for ensuring our success in this region. For example, all our products sold in Saudi are of course SASO compliant, and we offer special products dedicated to specific needs.
We do care passionately about water and energy conservation. All our thinking, from production to sales, is guided toward how to improve water usage. Therefore, offering water saving solutions, such as electronic touchless mixers, water saving technology (ecos mart), energy saving technology (CoolStart) is a key focus and priority for us.
What steps are you taking to educate customers about new technology and innova tions?
We fully recognise that teaching and informing our partners and customers about new technologies is very important. We create and execute insightful global brand campaigns to educate end users, and we regularly instigate and direct training to our customers so that they are constantly abreast of new developments and innova tions. The Hotel Show has been the ideal vehicle to impart our expertise in this – there is nothing
Who are your most impor tant clients, and where do you want to be more visible in the Middle East?
Our key markets are Saudi, Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan, and the UAE. This is where we foresee the biggest growth drivers, with strong potential devel opment around the region.
Where do you see the future taking you, especially with regard to expansion plans and the direction of your company?
We will be implementing a con sistent product portfolio shift over the next few years where the focus is on Eco products. The greatest lever for saving water, energy and thus reducing CO2 emissions is to reduce water consumption over long periods of time, to be ulti mately sustainable. Our aim is to do this without compromising the outstanding and original design on which we have forged our reputa tion over the past 121 years.

SHE’S Got It!
CLAIRE SPRING, GENERAL MANAGER OF INC SOLUTIONS UAE, HAS EXPLORED VARIOUS INDUSTRIES, FROM MEP TO CONSTRUCTION TO FIT-OUT, AS SHE SHARES HER JOURNEY AS WELL AS INC'S VISION AND FUTURE PLANS.
I've only worked for three compa nies in my 20 years of experience. This has influenced me to believe that employees should not be required to leave a company to ad vance and move up. I am very sup portive of employees' advancement within a company and encourage my team to express their progres sion goals so that we can all work together to achieve them. Working for a forward-thinking, one-of-akind company like INC allows us to provide this type of advancement to our employees.
Also, because I was so young when I started in the industry, I am passionate about hiring young talent and providing them with the support and opportunities they need to grow within the company.
Why did you choose construc tion? What led you to construc tion?
How has your early start in your career shaped you in your current role?
Over the last 20 years, I worked my way up through many different sectors from MEP contractor, and construction, all the way to fit-out, design, and build. Throughout my career, I've covered various areas from education, healthcare, hospi tality as well as commercial. Having gained experience through these many roles in such sectors has given me a broader knowledge of the wider industry.
Discovering construction at a young age and knowing right away that I wanted to stay in this indus try meant I could concentrate on my personal development and pro gression. Over time, I evolved into someone who was willing to take risks and put myself in challenging situations in order to achieve my goals. Now that I am in a position of leadership, I am deeply committed to the growth and advancement of my team.
As a child, I had no desire to work in the construction industry! Con struction, on the other hand, has always been a part of my family, as both my father and brother worked in the industry. I suppose there was always a chance it would find me.
At the age of 18, I landed my first job with one of London's largest MEP contractors. I would say that working in this sector in London was a huge learning curve and a difficult time. Nonetheless, I knew right away that it was an exciting industry to work in; it was both social and rewarding.
I was just so happy to see some thing being created and built right in front of your eyes. This is the type of industry where once you're in, you're in for life.
What has been the most surprising part of being a woman working in construction?
It's not something I often consider now, as the industry has positively evolved since I began 20 years ago. The industry is much more inclusive. However, back then, I
20 Woman in power
DESIGN MIDDLE EAST | OCTOBER 2022
won't deny it was tough. As a young woman in construction, you had to find a way to be heard above the stereotypical older, male generation. Staying committed, dedicated and loyal to the business helped. I found that the more supportive I was to the people around me and the stronger we worked together as a team, the more I would get back. I also believe that having a good mentor to work for is always beneficial.
What is the biggest change you have seen in the field since you started?
Like all sectors, the construction industry has seen a huge step forward with regard to increased technology and smarter ways of working. There are a lot more automated systems and online tools available in our industry to make the entire design and construc tion processes smoother and more efficient. But I believe that within the commercial office sector specifically,
it’s the shift to see offices not only as a place to work but also as a place employees enjoy coming to, meeting with colleagues collaborating and being creative.
Employers take much more interest in employee well-being when design ing office space now than they did previously. We are now designing the office around the employee's needs and not the business's needs. Office design is also more about flexibility for the future than ever before. We are no longer focusing just on what works now but on what will work further down the line and designing flexible spaces that can be adjusted to man age change. Offering clients designs that are flexible is key now.
You changed your career path from construction to fit-out in 2014; how did that happen?
Throughout the years, I've shifted roles from a large-scale MEP contractor to
immense construction projects all the way to the fast-paced world of the fit-out. For me, moving from traditional contracting to design and build was the most refreshing change. Contrary to the larger and longer construction programmes, I thoroughly enjoy the fast pace of the interior design and fit-out world. In this industry, we are regularly winning and delivering many more projects. It's exciting to work in the collaborative realms of design and build where teams work much closer together on the details. This is some thing I enjoy witnessing. >>>

Woman in power
INC Group has completed projects in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa with great success. This has enabled them to provide their clients with a definitive high-end solution via a guaranteed innovative system and process.
In your role, how important are leadership skills?
At INC there are two key elements of our DNA: We are passionate about what we do, and we care; not only about our clients but also about our employees. I believe that it’s essential to show that the leadership team genuinely cares about the success of the employees and the business while demonstrating our own passion and excitement towards the work we do. This goes a long way in building and shaping an inspiring workplace. I believe in leading by example, and that means allowing myself to have a good work-life balance, while still being dedicat ed to the business. This encourages the team to do the same.
How are you finding the fit-out field in the region?
What is lacking, and what can be done to improve it?
Over the years, the UAE has seen some stunning new commercial offices coming to life. For example, Dubai Design District, DWTC One Central and of course the stunning ICD Brookfield. The attention now needs to turn to the older buildings in Dubai. I think we need to now focus on upgrading some of the previously popular areas to keep up with the competition.
What techniques and methods are you focussing on at INC that could be game changers in the future in the fit-out industry?
INC is still one of the very few true Design & Build compa nies within the UAE. We have the largest in-house design team for a company of this nature in the region. While this is not unique around the world, within this region, it truly allows us to not only support our clients directly on D&B Projects but also the Design Consultants within the mar ket that we work with. Quite often, we are a true exten sion of their design team and genuinely offer that extra
collaboration to our joint clients on traditional projects.
At INC we also pride ourselves on looking after our clients long after they occupy their space. We truly focus on the After Care aspect which is something that is often overlooked by others. We have a full aftercare team with a firm process and system in place dedicated to keeping our clients returning to us again.
What are some exciting projects that you're currently working on?
We have actually just completed the third FitnGlam gym in the UAE. They are a revolutionary gym within the UAE that focuses on female empowerment. Considering INC is a female-led organization, we are very proud to have completed all three of their gyms.
Another project we are proud of is the Cloud Space office in Abu Dhabi. They are a pioneering brand that offers flexible workplace solutions aimed toward creating inspiring coworking spaces to fit just about any work style. Our scope of work on this project included the full MEP services, bespoke joinery items, and full installations of AV/IT, specialised lighting, furniture, and flooring, we are very proud of the final outcome. We are excited about Cloud Space’s expansion to Dubai and look forward to completing more projects with them.
How do you envision your future with the company?
I am extremely proud of the success INC has established over the years in the UAE. I feel fulfilled to have found my role here and been part of such an exciting time for the business.
Although our roots are firmly on the ground here in the UAE, the INC business continues to expand with the es tablishment of the INC Group. I am excited to see where we go next, and of course where this also takes me!.

RAED DIBS, CEO of Interiors UAE discusses the furniture industry, bringing international brands to the UAE, and plans for future growth.
You have over two decades of expe rience in the furniture industry. How does this help you in your current position at Interiors? Having worked in the furniture industry for over two decades, I am well aware of how vast the field is and how quickly things change - everything from new fabric and leather colours and textures, wood colours, designs, and manufac turing techniques. As CEO of Interiors, I push my team of experts to continue delivering products that represent our brand value of curating and delivering the latest designs made of high-quali ty materials to our customers. It is our

responsibility in retail to import new products that appeal to our customers' tastes, present them properly, market them to the appropriate audience, and deliver a seamless experi ence while keeping customer satisfaction as our top priority.
In your field, how important is innovation and quality?
An essential part of our business is presenting new products to customers while keeping up with the latest styles and colours. As a team, we make sure to attend the important fairs and exhibitions that take place around the world, such as Europe and the USA, to keep up-to-date with the latest trends and deliver this to our customers.
You've brought over 50 international furniture brands from Europe and the United States to the UAE. How do you manage this, and how has it impacted Interiors' market position?
When it comes to new brands, we have a company policy of always looking for new designs while remaining loyal to our suppliers and treating them with integrity. This policy enables us to constantly introduce and deliver new prod ucts from various brands while avoiding brand competition. Interiors is the only company in the UAE that offers classical, new classical, contemporary, and modern designs at a wide range of prices, allowing us to satisfy a wide range of clients.
In today's world of digital technology, where shopping is just a click away, how important are brick-and-mortar retail stores?
Although digital technology and e-commerce are develop ing at a very fast space for accessories and small pieces of furniture, customers still prefer visiting the brick-and-mortar stores for bigger sets, collections and full room renova tions before making the investment. This is for a number of reasons, such as checking the comfortability of a sofa, chair or mattress, the exact colour as well as the actual size. Since launching our e-commerce platform in 2021, the web site has not only attracted customers virtually but has also brought them to our stores so they can be sure that this is the product they want to buy.
What is the latest collection by Interiors you are most excited about?
The Giorgio Collection, which we carry, is an Italian luxury brand. Their new introductions at the June Milan fair drew a large audience and a positive response. We have also begun offering Theodore Alexander, a new brand from the USA with very unique designs.
What is the way to succeed in this competitive market full of e-commerce websites and start-ups?
Continuous change for the better, adaptability and resilience are the key steps to the success of any company, coupled with excellent customer service - making life easier for the end-users.
What are the challenges you often come across in this business?
Some of the challenges include the frequency of job changes in the younger generation of staff, local manufacturing by competitors and imi tation designs of our brands for a lower quality and price. Something we experienced during the pandemic was a shortage of stock due to irregu larities in the international supply chain.
Who are your majority of clients?
Our clientele is made up of a mixture of all na tionalities. However, a large percentage are main ly locals looking to outfit private residences. We also deal with architects, interior designers, prop erty developers, and real estate agents as well as corporate accounts for commercial projects.
Is there anything new you want to bring to the table?
We should be prepared for and start catering for generation Z as they will be the new generation of buyers with a wider disposable income.
What are the plans for the future?
We are very excited about our upcoming expan sion plans - we are opening two new showrooms in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain before the end of this year. We continue to strive to deliver our unique products and stellar customer service to more areas in the UAE.

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) was built to transform the possibilities of today into the realities of tomorrow.
Ithra does this by providing year-round, purpose-driven programming that enriches, educates and inspires. Tanween, Ithra’s flagship creativity festival, connects change-making creatives and innovators with global subject matter experts to expand ideas and opportunities firsthand, and nurture creative potential in an inspiration-fueled environment.
Tanween, Ithra's creativity season, em powers creatives and the creative sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and beyond by serving as a global hub for knowledge shar ing, increasing interest in innovation and the industry, developing local talent and creative professionals, and providing exceptional visitor experiences.
The festival focusses on the cultural and creative industries (CCI) – which include pursuits in arts, science and design – that have become a vital force in accelerating human development. Tanween empow ers people to take ownership of their own development and stimulate the innovation that can drive inclusive sustainable growth.
Ithra emphasises talent development as vital
to unlocking the potential of the creative and cultural economy in Saudi Arabia, the region and beyond. Tanween bolsters this endeavor through a series of programs highlighting the opportunities a creative career can bring, connecting talent with opportunities and providing resources to support the develop ment of both individuals and the industry at large.
Every year, Tanween takes on a theme delving into an aspect of the creative process where cultural audiences and creative consumers can discover the potential of an artistic career and mindset. The festival re affirms Ithra’s role as a leading advocate for the power of creativity through high-quality insight and original content creation by pro viding talks, workshops and masterclasses, exhibitions, installations, performances and screenings.
Tanween launched in 2018 with the theme “Disruption: A Creative Response to Change”. In 2019 the festival explored “Play: A Key ingredient to Creativity”, while in 2020 the festival took on a hybrid physical-virtual model due to the Covid-19 pandemic to examine “The New Next: Crea tivity to the Future”. The theme for Tanween 2021 was “Tools: Build the Creativity”, while Tanween 2022 highlights “Collaborate: Sym phony of Creativity”.

Tanween is designed to celebrate, explore, and inspire the creative process through connection.
From Disruption and Play to The New Next and Tools, Tanween returns to deconstruct, explore and redefine the creative process under its latest theme: Collaborate: Symphony of Creativity.
Understood across many terms – teamwork, partnership, synchronicity, consortium, cooperation and connection – collaboration describes a united journey with an end goal in mind. Measured across the Tanween frame work, collaboration describes a symphony, a choir, a chorus of creative voices working in unison across industries, ideas, interests, cultures and passions to transcend limits and boundaries.
Collaboration requires the ability to reflect, to ideate, to share and cooperate in the pursuit of creative endeavor. At its core, Tanween exists to bring people together in an ecosystem of creativity – where people of different interests, expertise levels and ages can connect, share knowledge and learn. The theme of “Collab orate” looks at who can collaborate, what can they do together, what can they create better together rather than apart. How do we collabo rate with our environment, where can we find a sense of harmony combining different design aspects and elements? How can collaboration across different industries pose solutions to es tablished challenges? A unity of concepts, from people to places, to ideas and environments, collaboration is an underrated tactic and tool that can help us unlock our creative potential and bring forth the creative industries of to morrow led by the innovators of today.
Across three weekends, filled with talks and panels, exhi bitions, networking sessions, masterclasses, keynote addresses, demonstrations and more, Ithra empowers creatives and the creative in dustries to reflect on the value of teamwork and of uniting concepts to create something greater together.

Here’s the brief on the Tanween Challenges Exhibition
GRAPHIC DESIGN / ALKHOBAR AL SHAMALIA IDENTITY CHALLENGE
A historic neighborhood that is not only much-loved by its residents but central to the identity of Al Khobar city, Al Khobar Al Shamalia has become a focus for investment and regeneration efforts. The 2022 Tanween Graphic Design Challenge asked participating teams to create a new visual identity for the district – one that celebrates its unique character, balancing the old and the new, while resolving the need for new and improved signage and wayfinding. Challenge participants benefited from an in-depth familiari zation program that introduced them to Al Khobar Al Shamalia, its residents and industry professionals working in the district.
ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN / CARDBOARD PAVILION CHALLENGE
The design of pavilions has been synonymous with architectural ex ploration for many centuries. Free of the functional, technical and material constraints often associated with more permanent buildings, pavilions are the ideal opportunity for material, concep tual and structural experimentation. By creating unique spaces where peo ple can enjoy themselves, socialize and interact with their environment, pa vilions allow architects and designers to test big ideas on a small scale. The goal of this challenge was to encourage architects and interior designers to create a sustainable, demountable and iconic structure that would become a traveling landmark using a single mate rial – cardboard.
PRODUCT DESIGN / ABLUTION ERGONOMICS CHALLENGE
As every Muslim knows, wudu is the ritual act of physical and spiritual cleansing performed before prayer. As a result, every mosque has space set aside for wudu, but it can be uncomfortable, environmentally wasteful and often pays little or no regard to accessibility. The Tanween 2022 Ablution Ergonom
Tanween brings a transformative experience, the latest industry insights, emerging and established talent and the opportunities for them to connect.
ics Challenge asked emerging creatives to devise an innovative and more user-focused design solution for wudu that looks to a future in which mosques are not only more inclusive but also increasingly sustainable.
FASHION DESIGN / BIOTECH FASHION CHALLENGE
The fashion industry has a problem: overproduction, overconsumption and the rise of fast, disposable fashion are not only environmentally disastrous but contribute to entrenching social inequality, with disastrous results. The Tanween Biotech Fashion Challenge invited designers to create a unique garment that explores the potential of new biomaterials, digital fabrication techniques and business models. The aim is to turn heads on the high street or the catwalk while creating a more sustainable future for the industry, consumers and the planet. The winning entries will also be showcased at Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week.
INTERACTIVE DESIGN / AR ARTWORK CHALLENGE
This year, Tanween invited artists, designers and developers to explore the concept of migration through the medium of a limited-edition artist’s print that combines traditional media with augmented reality (AR). Inspired by Ithra’s latest landmark exhibition, Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet ﷺ, which celebrates the Prophet’s
journey from Makkah to Madinah, the challenge welcomed interpretations of migration in its broadest sense –physical, mental and spiritual, as well as animal and human.
Tanween, Ithra’s flagship creativity season, is designed to celebrate, ex plore and inspire the creative process. Since its inception, Tanween has con nected change-making creatives and innovators with global subject matter experts in an inspiration-fueled envi ronment to nurture creative potential, share ideas and redefine what creativ ity means in a changing world. Since 2018, Tanween has hosted more than 75,000 participants, and welcomed over 200,000 visitors – in person and virtually.

Project
The design, like many of Fu's other works, conveys a purity of form as well as a strong sense of intimacy and warmth.
THE INSPIRATION
The spa has been designed to evoke the spirituality of the East within the context of the hotel's Art Deco history. Fu was inspired to take this approach after visiting traditional Japanese temples and Zen gardens in Kyoto. Rather than imitating these specific aesthetic traditions, Fu has imagined a unique contemporary experience that promotes a genuine sense of mindful ness and balance, heavily influenced by Asian design influences.
THE JOURNEY
The spa’s architecture invites guests to experience a series of highly articulat ed spaces that play with proportions and, more importantly, light and shade to create an immersive experience. Each vista is carefully considered with windows that subtly frame each view. Upon entering the foyer, guests are greeted by a full-height cast glass
screen created by Irish artisan Eoin Turner. The texture of the glass evokes the silhouette of a bamboo grove or reed beds, leading visitors into the rotunda, a meditative, dimly lit cylindrical space with a suspended Japanese glass artwork by Victoire Bourgois. Falling water trickles down the installation, creating a multisensory environment with soothing sound and visual elements. Guests then enter another circular space adorned with a solid limestone counter, alongside a ceiling illuminated by a halo of light glowing from above. The spatial tour continues through a 12m-long tunnel with a slanted wall on one side, embel lished with a grid of strong shadows cast across the ceiling. On the other side is a linear glass opening that looks onto the indoor pool. This

Bonsai trees are also featured extensively in the connecting passageway to accentuate the sense of nature throughout the spa.
“WELLNESS IS THE FOCUS OF THE DESIGN OF CLARIDGE’S SPA. THIS DEMONSTRATES A MORE GENERAL SOCIETAL TREND TOWARDS LOOKING AFTER THE WELLBEING OF OURSELVES AND THE ENVIRONMENT. THE NOTION OF 'LUXU RY' IS ALSO EVOLVING TO BECOME MORE HOLISTIC, INCOR PORATING CONCEPTS OF WELLNESS. FOR ME, THIS IS ALL ABOUT CREATING AN ESCAPE THAT CELEBRATES MINDFUL NESS, AND IS PURE AND BALANCED.”
The use of natural elements, such as solid French limestone, natural oak, and water, emphasises the sense of authenticity that lies at the heart of Fu's personal aesthetics
visual connection to water, light and shadow creates the impression of a subterranean micro-climate. The corridor leads to a series of private
changing pods, each complete with private showers and amenities.
The main pool area serves as the spa's focal point. The pool is framed by two rows of limestone-clad columns and a magnificent multi-vaulted ceiling. Personal cabanas, set back from the water, provide private spaces to relax.
A Scarpa-inspired low wall appears to cut into the pool, with a mini water fall protruding from one side. Another installation of interlock ing oak posts adorns the threshold marking the entrance to the treat ment area. Inspired by the silhouette of bamboo forestry, the spaces are suffused with a sense of calm and meditation.
Each of the seven private treatment salons provides the ultimate urban retreat. Each treatment chamber is lined in full height oak panelling that conceals all equipment and is purposefully pure to allow for mind and body rejuvenation.

on this project, I immediately said yes because I quickly sensed that 81 Designs shares similar craft values and craft preservation endeavours as mine. My work would not be possible without the mag ical work of the potters I work with here in Mo rocco. As such, a lot of what I do revolves around collaborations as pieces are handled by several hands throughout the process. When I learned about the work 81 Designs is doing with Tatreez, I was very keen on collaborating on my pieces in a similar way. I was interested in creating ceramic pieces that would act as a sort of shared canvas.”
“The pots were created by a group of seven potters and assistants and myself with an aim to leave space for pattern work in the form of Tatreez. I wanted to share a bit of what I do with these women by inviting them to explore patterns through the art of Tatreez on my pots. Using clay as an embroidery support meant a lot of careful planning and meticulous handling during the
pottery-making stages. It also meant that we would have to push the boundaries of Tatreez by exploding cross stitches and working on different scales. The result of this 'Autumn Harvest’ is a series of intricate, earthy coloured, ceramics created by a group of artisans in Morocco and embroidered by Palestinian refugee artisans in Lebanon,” she continues.

LINE,
which designed the architectural lighting for the hotel public spaces such as the lobby, Irish pub, restaurants, and common areas, chose warm white 2700 Kelvin colour temperatures to create a warmer and more friendly atmosphere in the overall lighting scenario. The emphasis on architectural elements and the interaction of various materials with light, which are among the main ideas of the lighting design concept, created a holistic and perceptual difference in many points throughout the project. The entire lighting system is designed to be controllable and dimmable, taking into account the variety of different functions and purposes of usage at various times of the day.
One of the most important factors to consider when designing the interior lighting of the Cullinan Golf Resort Hotel is maintaining the highest level of glare control and eye comfort while providing adequate light levels in the lobby gallery space. While the decorative pendant lighting fixture that spans the gallery space appears to be an object, the double narrow

Inspired by the most magnificent diamond ever discovered, Cullinan Belek redefines luxury by providing comfort, a gastronomic experience, and extraordinary entertainment through its elegant and sophisticated rooms in various segments, private white sand beach, and restaurants.

beam angle downlight fixtures hidden between the wooden lamellas on the ceiling provide a level of illumination on the floor.
The architectural accents in the other restaurant types with different architectural language located in the exterior part of the hotel are supported by lighting, and the general lighting of the restaurants is provided indirectly with a soft light effect. The exterior illumination of the Galapagos Club, an organically formed architectural structure, stands out magnificently.
Galapagos Club operates as a snack bar during the day and as a club at night. To support the organic form, concealed linear lights in different layers and under steps in the space highlight the entire architectural structure while also providing general illumination of the space with reflected light from the floor.

Kristina Zanic Consultants designed the UAE's newest five-star hotel in a modern style that celebrates local heritage. This summer, the Palace Beach Resort Fujairah welcomed its first guests with interiors that offer a modern interpretation of the traditional Arabian fortress. Eagle Hills, the developer, commissioned the interior design studio to create the interiors for the hotel, which is managed by Emaar Hospitality Group. Eagle Hills, the developer, commissioned the interior design studio to create the interiors for the hotel, which is managed by Emaar Hospitality Group. The scope of the project included the design of 167 rooms and suites, an all-day dining restaurant, a kids' club, a gym, meeting and function spaces, and an outdoor pool terrace.
The vision was to create bright and airy spaces, with uninterrupted perspectives and fresh marineinspired colours drawn from its beachfront setting.
“Our aim was to convey a style that speaks of understated and

relaxed luxury, based on a ‘less is more’ approach”, says the studio’s CEO Kristina Zanic. “We wanted the guest to experience an overall sense of lightness and freshness within a sophisticated setting.”
The palatial architecture and the lobby's double-storey height heighten the sense of scale and openness. It creates welcoming spaces with open, airy layouts and an almost residential feel, inviting guests to relax and enjoy the ocean view.
The designers preferred a minimal approach over the traditionally elaborate style of the region.

Design associate Annika Broemmer explains: “Arabian design is famous for its craftsmanship and elements like mashrabiya screens, arches, metallic sheens and geometric patterns. We wanted to use these defining elements but present them in a simpler more modern appearance.”
Geometric patterns derived from the region's design vernacular and applied to flooring, walls, and furniture finishes create visual interest throughout the interiors.
In the main lobby, funky oversized lacquer floor lamps blend in with the classic mother of pearl inlay in the Moroccan side tables. Large oriental rugs take on a more modern appearance thanks to their tonal neutral palette, while a dramatic feature light overhead alludes to the local fishing industry's fishermen's nets. A mezzanine walkway inspired by fortress architecture is adorned with a minimal glass balustrade to maintain visual flow.
In other areas of the property, arches in furniture take on a taller, simpler silhouette than the classic Arabian arch.
The fortress theme continues in the kids' club, where castle-like play structures are available. Lanterns set in niches in the corridor walls guide guests to their rooms, with rooms adhering to the overall palette and minimal approach..

The resort's contemporary art collection includes photography and abstract paintings with local motifs and Arabic calligraphy, and bronze geometric screens in the restaurant offer a modern take on the traditional mashrabiya.
“ARABIAN DESIGN IS FAMOUS FOR ITS CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ELEMENTS LIKE MASHRABIYA SCREENS, ARCHES, METALLIC SHEENS AND GEOMETRIC PATTERNS. WE WANTED TO USE THESE DEFINING ELEMENTS BUT PRESENT THEM IN A SIMPLER MORE MODERN APPEARANCE.”
