This is the magic we see with our eyes and in your eyes, the Design Middle East Awards 2022, held on November 11 in Dubai, saluted the true gems of the architecture and design fields.

The awards recognised the top architects and designers in the region. We exceeded all expectations, and we can't thank you all enough for your constant support and encouragement.

It's amazing to see how we make new friends every year, in addition to our loyal patrons, and how we're expanding our design family and cheering for each other under one roof.

Our December issue includes all of the night's highlights. It's a keeper's edition with memories to last a lifetime.

CK Architecture Interiors expands to Abu Dhabi, with plans to enter Saudi Arabia in 2023

CK Architecture Interiors, a vertically integrated design and build boutique specialising in the creation of opulent living and working spaces based in Dubai, has announced the opening of a new 5,000sqft. showroom and experiential centre at the St. Regis Residences on Saadiyat Island.

The new showroom was officially opened by Turkish film and television actor Engin Altan Düzyatan and Cem Kapancioglu, founder and managing director of CK Architecture Interiors.

CK Architecture Interiors provides bespoke design and build solutions for luxury residential, commercial and hospitality projects and has previously designed and built two signature villas located on Dubai’s ‘Billionaire’s Row’ in Palm Jumeirah. It is currently working on four other ultra-luxury villas on Dubai’s ‘Billionaire’s Row’ that are due to be handed over in Q1 2023.

With the new experiential centre, clients in Abu Dhabi will get a first-hand feel of the design capabilities and high-quality materials used in luxury projects as well as view 3D mock-ups of previous projects in an enhanced lifestyle setting.

“There is now, more than ever, a greater need for design and build specialists in the Abu Dhabi market,” said Kapancioglu. “The UAE capital is witnessing a considerable increase in demand for prime real estate from UAE residents and HNWIs from across Europe and other parts of the world.

The UAE-based fitout contractor and workplace expert has announced a number of management-level promotions to support its growing business.

Ahead of its 11th anniversary and the most successful year to date, Motif Interiors, the UAE-based fit-out contractor and workplace expert, has announced a number of management-level promotions. Akeel Perera, Charlie Speechley, and Rita Estephan will assume new roles on January 1, 2023.

“Since its establishment in 2012, Motif’s in-

house capabilities, team expertise and client portfolio have grown significantly, allowing us to offer more efficient services to our existing and future clients,” said Rayas Ali, Group Director. “We have doubled our revenue in 2022 and everyone on our team contributed to that success, from our leadership and management teams to our design and operations teams.”

Motif’s team increased by 34% this year, and their latest leadership promotions demonstrate the company’s ability to develop diverse inhouse talent.

Taking on the role of Chief Executive Officer, Akeel Perera, currently Head of Sales will be responsible for the strategic direction and business growth of Motif, in addition to overseeing ongoing operations and projects.

“Perera is moving away from sales duties as part of our long-term succession strategy,” Rayas explained. “His promotion to CEO acknowledges the important role he has played – and will continue to play – in strengthening our relationships with design communities and our overall position in the fit-out industry.

With 300+ employees across mmultiple business verticals, its founders, Rayas Ali and Riyas Mohammed have grown Motif steadily over the years thanks to their strong management team willing to be a part of their inspiring journey. Being in their mid-30s, they’ve managed to create a unique, young and flexible company culture, attracting some of the best talents in the industry.

The company has also promoted Charlie Speechley to Vice President after working as Senior Business Development Manager for the past seven years.

“Charlie has always been the face of our company since he joined us in 2015. With no prior business development experience, he has evolved into one of our company’s strongest assets,” explained Riyas Mohammed, Motif’s founder. “ He was also given more responsibilities, which allowed him to grow himself and Motif into

what we are today. Being involved in every decision, his professional approach and great team skills have led him to always overachieve. Our decision to give Charlie this position was to encourage him to bring the same positive attitude to other parts of our business.”

Rita Estephan has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer, building on her existing role as a Head of Design. As well as overseeing design operations, Rita will also be responsible for revenue generation, cost management, and profitability of these business units.

“Rita has played a key role in growing and strengthening Motif’s in-house design capabilities during her four-year career and in building our project portfolio. She has a strong design background, strong

leadership skills, a keen eye for long-term planning and extensive client relationships, which makes her the ideal Chief Operating Officer for Motif Interiors,” Rayas said.

According to Rayas, since joining Motif, Rita was continually performing and delivered beyond her expected role and responsibilities.

“We recognised her unique professional qualities and management capabilities, which are far beyond interior design skills. Over the years, Rita has been independently winning projects for Motif and managing both internal teams and our clients successfully, always going beyond what was expected from her,” he added.

This year, Motif Interiors has moved into brand new 15,000 sqft offices in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT).

Major projects in 2022 include the Pupil of Fate showroom on SZR, four floors for a global marketing company in Dubai Media City and a 50,000 sqft confidential government project in One Central, Dubai World Trade Center.

Currently, the team is working on 12 largescale projects for multinational clients in the new DMCC

Uptown Tower in JLT. This iconic and muchanticipated commercial building will also house Motif’s new office in 2023, showcasing the latest trends in office design and featuring some of the best global design brands.

In conversation with Havelock One’s design team –Maria Doctor (MD) and Riyah Gravador (RG).

According to you, what are the significant factors influencing office/ workspace design trends in 2022?

MD: Collaborative workspaces offering agility and flexibility are some of the significant trends that have been created for offices, especially in this region where teams are composed of diverse backgrounds. This design trend draws each employee to engage more efficiently, helps build rapport and can inspire the employee to be more of a team player. We are now in the era of modern technology and viewing commercial spaces as a home away from home, so workspaces being agile and flexible is undoubtedly a primary consideration in office design trends. Sustainability is also widely embraced by many as it has benefited most companies in terms of productivity and a healthier workplace.

RG: We are now in a postpandemic world, and everything we have learned and endured for the past two years has changed and influenced how we design our current offices/workspaces.

At Havelock One, employee wellness is a priority; hence, we adopt the best office design placement in our locations. And we ensure that our design proposals for offices are agile, biophilic and remote-work capable, which has been the office design trend for a few years now.

Is there a high demand for incorporating sustainability and green options in commercial properties based on the enquiries received so far?

fit-out space, our team of professionals ensures that the materials we procure for our projects are responsibly procured and meet sustainability requirements.

RG: It’s our design philosophy and has always been the major factor considered in our design. Having a sustainable commercial office/property not only helps the environment but also positively impacts office culture and well-being in the workplace.

What is the demand/aspiration towards having AI and technology-embedded workspace?

RG: We believe AI and technology are crucial in today’s workspace. We need to start implementing intelligent ways to ease the flexibility of working in the office and remotely. Innovative solutions such as smart video conference screens that double as a whiteboard and meeting room booking systems hugely boost efficiency and connectivity. the next few years, technology and AI influence will grow as many offices now embrace anything that can make work efficient with task automation and machinelearning systems already in our hands.

They have operations across all GCC locations (seven offices/ two factories and five markets – Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE). In Bahrain, it operates two large manufacturing and warehouse facilities totalling 520,000sqft.

What is the process you follow taking a design brief from the client?

MD: As I represent a brand and not just as an individual designer, I usually combine creative, analytical, and realistic approaches and present them to the client. My proposal is based on what I have filtered out of the broad range of ideas that won’t overwhelm them. We do inject design elements that tell the brand story within the given space. As being in the Design and Build industry, we also provide inception to implementation views at various stages for seeking client approvals.

RG: Most of the time, while taking the client’s design brief, I put myself in their place, how they feel and see things with their own eyes. After considering everything along with the site survey, I map the key points down and sketch my ideas on a piece of paper so that the visuals from my imagination are in black and white, and it will be my roadmap through the concept design. This roadmap is backed up with further research and the selection of finishes and materials through our vast collection of physical materials and FFE catalogues.

Do you offer solutions for ergonomic or tasteful furniture?

MD: Yes. Ergonomics is a priority, and we even offer value engineering in the event of any budget constraints.

RG: We have partnered with reputable and high-quality office/workspace furniture makers at all price points to suit every requirement.

Casa Milano, the UAE's leading retailer of luxury home solutions, marked its third anniversary with an exciting announcement. Casa Milano announced a partnership with leading global sanitaryware brand Ideal Standard in UAE.

The 80sqm area was designed by Italian designer Roberto Palomba, founder of PS+A Studio, and conveys the same atmosphere and approach as Ideal Standard. The area corresponds to the brand's new Design & Specification Centre in Dubai's City Walk area, facing the iconic Burj Khalifa. It is also compatible with Ideal Standard Singular, a new approach to specification that combines the company's extensive product knowledge, sector expertise, and design services to allow customers to easily select from thousands of products to create the right solution for their space.

Casa Milano began as a luxury sanitaryware and tiles retailer in Dubai, but has since expanded its product and service portfolio to include design and decoration of both indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as opening a second store in Abu Dhabi. All of this in just three years.

Casa Milano held an open house at its flagship Dubai showroom to announce the new partnership in October 2022, which was attended by interior designers, architects, and consultants from across the UAE. Design Middle East had an exciting conversation with Sajan, and here are some excerpts:

How does it feel to be celebrating the brand's third anniversary?

It's almost surreal! It seems like only yesterday that we opened our first showroom in Dubai in October of 2019. The last three years have been a rollercoaster ride with many ups and downs. All in all, it's been a delightful journey.

What was so unique about working with Ideal Standard?

Expansion is unquestionably a sign of progress. And in three years, we have not only grown demographically, but we have also diversified into various departments, making Casa Milano a one-stop shop for all of your home improvement needs. We are thrilled to be working with another global sanitaryware leader, Ideal Standard. We are growing alongside the brands, as well as as a brand.

How does it feel about working with Ideal Standard?

It is an honour to be associated with a global leader like Ideal Standard. I've been a fan of the brand since I was a child because my family is in the sanitaryware business. I've seen the brand grow at every level.

In addition, how do you see yourself prominently positioning each brand in the region?

My father always told me that we should partner with brands that will be long-term partners and share the same mindset for mutual benefit, and I am making an effort to partner with brands

that will be long-term partners. We have made certain that all brands are given due consideration, whether in terms of display or marketing.

How do you see Casa Milano evolving in the future?

We have already established ourselves as a luxurious brand since the beginning of our journey. The idea is to give any customer who walks into one of our showrooms a taste of luxury, an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives, even if they do not purchase from us. We would and will continue to do so in all of the showrooms we intend to open in the GCC.

Tell us if you were able to achieve your goals and expectations in 2022.

The year 2022 has indeed been a remarkable year for us, as we achieved several exceptional feats, in terms of delivering unique projects for clients on schedule. We embarked on several diverse projects this year, all of which we were able to deliver successfully on time, thanks to the continuous efforts of our dedicated team, combined with our well-planned strategies. Over 35 years we successfully provided

distinctive and sustainable interior fit-out solutions for diverse clients in the UAE, including Marriott, SLS Hotels and Residences, FIVE Palm Jumeirah Hotel, Nikki Beach Resort & Spa, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, University of Wollongong, RTA, Skynews, ENOC, Waldorf Astoria, etc. In 2022, we successfully delivered the interior design of the Brett Johnson Boutique at the Dubai Mall, which is one of the outstanding projects in the Middle East and Asia.

How has the performance differed from 2021?

There is no denying that the effects and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic made 2021 a difficult year for all businesses across a variety of sectors worldwide. Companies across the world faced a significant dilemma on what to do, while the pandemic was at its worst. Once the world began to return to its pre-pandemic normalcy, we decided to reorganise our business and renewed our efforts to immediately start working on a range of unique projects. This was made possible by the diligent and productive staff

THE FITOUT’s commitment to green construction through early adoption and ongoing education on emerging techniques and products has resulted in works that are in sync with the environment and also satisfy client needs.

at our own production facilities. During the pandemic, THE FITOUT adapted, employed robust precautions, and kept moving forward with optimism.

Post pandemic, we strived to significantly raise productivity and enhance efficiency, by introducing high-tech equipment to expedite project completion as well as its delivery. We further undertook various other safety precaution measures for our office to be a safe environment for our employees. Also, each project we embark on has a safety officer appointed, to ensure

that staff health and safety are given top priority. They are well-trained and prepared to resolve any challenges that could occur.

Currently, we have numerous major projects underway in the UAE, such as Residence Inn by Marriott, The Royal Atlantis, and Saudi German Hospital. We will soon complete the Newby Tea Projectin Abu Dhabi and successfully delivered the Palm Tower, the newly opened Panorama Restaurant in the Residence Inn by Marriott, as well as several villas in Khawaneej Area and Arabian Ranches.

Tell us about some of the current projects you're working on and what are the upcoming projects in the pipeline?

In terms of technology, are there any particular technologies that you are working on that we should be aware of, but are currently under the radar?

We constantly strive to adopt recent technologies that improve our efficiency and enable us to provide the finest projects, in addition to fostering sustainability. We are keen to stay up to date with the most recent technology and currently, our production facility has incorporated several modern technologies and innovations, which include the newest CNC machine and Edge Banding machine. Additionally, our production facility also includes a special, unique, and standalone veneer area with a double-stitching veneer machine and a veneer slicing machine with a piece of art veneers.

Tell us about your manufacturing facility and how does the facility work to ensure the best final product is being sent to the client/project?

We believe in keeping pace with recent technologies and advancements to enhance overall productivity and efficiency. Specialised Manufacturer Of The Year

HAVELOCK ONE INTERIORS

Havelock One Interiors won the Specialised Manufacturer of the Year Award.

For the Liberté Restaurant in Kuwait, Havelock One Interiors fabricated all of the metal screens for the central column, curved partition arches, wall panels with mosaic screens, service counters, cake counter, cake display counter, banquette seating, and loose furniture. They offered turnkey solutions for the custom-made glass light

box, glass ceiling, centre column glass unit, canopy, U-shaped 3D screen around the banquette, and all the planter boxes. The installations required three different metal finishes, bespoke mosaic with gradients, and tailor-made timber planks with burnt effect. They used approximately ten different types of glasses for the screens. Oakwood, veneer, fabric/ leather, and alabaster were also used for the other joinery works.

Excellence In Health & Safety (Fit-Out)

KPS won the Excellence in Health & Safety (Fit-Out) Award. KPS has its own professional HSE team and uses external certification bodies to evaluate the compliance of its HSE systems and to provide guidance to KPS’ senior management. They are monitored by external integrated management system certification bodies through ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 on a yearly basis. The management uses these inputs to promote a positive safety culture across all our worksites. This includes the development of best-practice

international HSE standards; establishing channels to communicate HSE policies to everyone; benchmarking our site performance; minimising occupational ill health; maintaining a safe work environment; establishing adequate funding for HSE and ensuring its effective use, and ensuring legal compliance is always maintained.

At the end of 2021, TUV Rheinland completed its most recent external IMS surveillance audit, with zero non-conformance across ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018.

Kristina Zanic Consultants' Accor headquarters was declared the Commercial Project of the Year. The newly refurbished space welcomes visitors in a sumptuous style rarely seen in workplaces and blurs the lines between hospitality and office design. The space is a unique reflection of the Accor brand and its French style and gives the visitor a feeling of stepping into any of its many luxurious hotels and resorts around the world. The scope involved the design of a 316sqm area to host meetings with VIP guests for its luxury brands. It included a lift lobby, reception and lounge, spacious conference area with food and beverage facilities, informal meeting space with relaxed social areas, and two lavish guest washrooms.

Sixth Form Hub At Sunmarke School /LULIE FISHER DESIGN STUDIO

Sixth Form Hub at Sunmarke School by Julie Fisher Design Studio won the Design Education Awards this year.

Sunmarke School in Dubai asked Lulie Fisher Design Studio to convert half of an existing floor plate containing classrooms, corridors, and offices into a cutting-edge Sixth Form Hub. Their brief in the competitive world of Dubai schools was to create an iconic space that is cool and funky enough to appeal to 16 -18-year-olds while also engaging, aspirational, and functional.

The sixth form hub acts as a home base for students when not actively participating in lessons and the central garden with its greenery, daylight, warm palette and soft finishes coupled with the multitude of study and seating styles provide the perfect respite for contemplation, study, collaboration, relaxation and nurture and a touch of communing with nature.

Ghaf Majlis /ETEREO

The "Ghaf Majlis project," located in the UAE is a cultural gathering place for guests to discuss various topics, exchange news, and socialise. The site is in the desert and is surrounded by the national tree of the UAE, the Ghaf tree.

The client's main requirements were to design a representative and iconic building that could function as a gathering place and contrast with the desert. At the same time, it should respect and preserve the site's existing Ghaf trees.

The main majlis and mini majlis, main dining room and mini dining room, lobby, bathrooms, and a heavy kitchen are all part of the building programme.

Blind Tiger /LIGHT & LIVES

Blind Tiger by Light & Lives won the Lighting Project of the Year Award. Blind Tiger is a contemporary lounge with a strong statement, designed with a 'Rainforest' theme in mind. The biophilic theme is communicated through key design elements such as artwork, lighting, furniture, materials, and accessories, giving the lounge a distinct identity. To elevate the design story of the twilight sky in a forest, the lighting approach for this space for both architectural and decorative lighting has been inspired. The hidden architectural lights help to sculpt and highlight the geometry of the spaces.

Airtel Africa Services Limited HQ

Design Infinity's Airtel Africa Services Limited HQ was declared Sustainable Project of the Year.

Design Infinity created a smart workplace that transcends the physical boundaries of the cubicle and office, fostering productivity and increasing employee satisfaction through collaboration and communication. This office received the highest number of points in the GCC for LEED Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) Commercial Interiors v4 certification, and it is the first company in the UAE to achieve 70 points in the USGBC rating across all telecommunication sectors. Airtel received LEED GOLD accreditation, making it the first telecommunications company in the UAE to do so. Airtel is the 2nd highest project in Dubai and the 5th highest project in the UAE to achieve LEED GOLD certification.

Countdown Clock Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup /IMAGINATION MIDDLE EAST

Innovation in Design Award was lifted by Imagination Middle East for their unique Countdown Clock Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Inspired by the infinity symbol shape of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 logo, Imagination Middle East transformed a two-dimensional logo into a three-dimensional sculptural form that transforms as audiences walk around it, and celebrates the notion of time through two unique mechanics. 3FILS by Designsmith won the Hospitality Project Design Award (Restaurants, bars, & clubs). The design is simple, natural, and earthy. Because the word 'natural' is so important, there are no modern materials such as metal, plastic, or synthetic fibres. Instead of sleek, glossy burl wood, the design incorporates more reclaimed and unfinished woods and stones. The project's goal was to create a warm, welcoming Japandi-style space with a calm and peaceful colour palette to enhance the sense of comfort and tranquillity. The design leans towards a holistic approach and creates a positive and balanced space. The use of planters and natural light coming in through large windows make the space look lively, fresh, and inviting.

Habitas Alula Desert Resort /AEDAS

Aedas' Habitas Alula Desert Resort won the Hospitality Project Design Award (Hotels). Set in the heart of Ashar and adjacent to the ancient sites of Hegra and Jebel Ikmah, the resort has become one of the signature desert resorts. The site is located within the Hidden Canyon area of Ashar, which also hosts to the Desert X exhibition and creates a unique arrival experience and drawcard to the hotel.

The guests will travel on a scenic route to the site, enriching their travel experience. On the way to the resort, scenic routes can be defined that take visitors through undeveloped landscapes, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape as they travel through the county and between key destinations.

Majlis Al Amal By Al Jalila Foundation

The Al Jalila Foundation initiative, Majlis Al Amal, Hope Lounge in Arabic, is a unique ‘cancer drop-in centre’ and the first-of-its-kind community centre dedicated to female cancer patients and their well-being. The project by Pinnacle Interiors won the Healthcare Project of the Year Award. The centre is located on the ground floor of Al Jalila Foundation, Dubai Healthcare City,

comprising 1,722sqft. is a safe space for cancer patients and their family members to enhance their emotional health in a relaxed, supportive environment. Patients can drop in at any time for information, a chat over tea or coffee, use the in-house library, take part in classes, or attend educational sessions presented by specialists volunteering their time to make a difference in the lives of women affected by cancer.

Dubai Mall Lower Ground Enhancement & Atrium Upgrade /KHANSAHEB INTERIORS

The Dubai Mall - Lower Ground Floor Enhancement and Atrium Upgrade by Khansaheb Interiors won the Interior FitOut project of the Year.

Scope of work included demolition of critical spaces; upgraded ceilings, columns, escalators, and atriums lighting; modifying existing MEP systems, alterations/repairs to smoke extract system, HVAC, electrical installation of new fire life safety system; plus other important works.

Working within an operational mall was one of the most challenging tasks for Khansaheb Interiors.

Detailed methodologies and programmes were developed for removing existing flooring, and preparing and installing new tiles and grout each night, leaving no trip hazards. Rapid setting adhesive/grout used for tile installation.

Al Alamein Hotel /WHITESPACE ARCHITECTS

and a short drive from the capital and all the happening destinations.

The extension to the Al Alamein hotel was planned behind the original hotel along the 40m Alexandria Matrough highway. This is physically disconnected from the sea creating a unique challenge as a response the extension to the hotel was proposed to be topographically elevated to maximize the views and create a microclimate between the highway and the existing hotel. A relaxed green area was planned to surround the development to provide a dual experience to the visitors. The major design aspiration was not just to visually connect the hotel with the sea but also physically bring the sea to the development. This idea was emphasised by pulling in the central axis from the previous hotel to create an anchored pool with a floating bar, and decks and provide physical access to the beach. The most premium villas float on the edge of the central pool to increase the maximum of the water lines and to provide a luxury feeling.

Al Alamein Hotel by Whitespace Architects won the Project of the Year Award. Toyota 3S Facility /FACE ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN

Face Architecture + Design's Toyota 3S Facility was named Refurbishment Project of the Year. Stripped to its core, the bare steel structure was the framework for the new design. Existing AC units and MEP infrastructure wherever possible were sustainably reused to minimise the environmental impact of the renovation. The ultra-clear performance glazing used now provides uninterrupted visual connectivity into the showroom. Strategic planning of the programme and choice of building systems and materials such as External Grade Plaster Board systems as opposed to conventional masonry and locally sourced aluminium and glazing, allowed the project to be completed within a timeline of 7 months including demolition.

MASTERPLAN OF THE YEAR

Masaar /ARADA

The Masterplan of the Year Award was given to ARADA for its Masaar project. The 19 million square foot upscale project will include 4,000 villas and townhouses in total, all set in eight gated districts linked by Masaar’s signature feature, a lushly landscaped and walkwable ‘green spine’. Construction on Masaar will begin in the second quarter, and the first homes are scheduled to be handed over in the first quarter of 2023. Masaar, or ‘path’ in Arabic, has been carefully designed to enable its residents to transform their lives by encouraging healthy living in harmony with nature. Featuring over 50,000 trees, Masaar’s green spine will be activated by footpaths and a range of different sporting facilities, all hosted in a safe, serene and nature-filled environment. Families residing in Masaar will enjoy a peaceful yet world-class living experience, with acres of green space allowing for forest walks, picnics, running, cycling or meditation.

Authority won the Mixed-Use Development of the Year Award.

Khorfakkan Hotel & Waterpark Development is located in Khorfakkan within the Emirate of Sharjah. Khorfakkan is a town on the Gulf of Oman, in the United Arab Emirates. It centres on Khorfakkan Bay, home to the curved Khorfakkan Beach and a deep-sea port. A promenade runs along the beachfront, against the backdrop of the dramatic Hajar Mountains.

The development features a hotel, waterpark and retail area that will maximise connectivity to the beach. These functions are located on the front edge and create a direct link to the sea.

Samana Miami /SAMANA DEVELOPERS

Samana Miami by Samana Developers won the Design & Build Project of the Year. The project’s architecture is influenced by designs of the City of Miami, southeastern Florida, the United States – which exemplifies glamour, fun, and excess. It gives a look and a feel of Miami lifestyle.

The project, spanning over 125,765sqft is the first project in Dubai which has private pools with every 1 and 2-bedroom apartment. The project hosts a leisure deck with a main pool, cascading water features, outdoor cinema, indoor and outdoor gyms, a sauna and a steam room, and a dedicated play area for children.

This project comes with luxury amenities which include a children’s swimming pool, leisure pool deck, green areas, health club, infinity pool, barbeque areas, outdoor cinema, children’s play area, jacuzzi, valet parking, and round-the-clock security.

Trojena Ski Neom /AEDAS

Trojena Ski NEOM by Aedas won the Best Future Project Award.

Trojena will be an iconic, world-class destination, blending natural and developed landscapes – and offering unique human-centric experiences for residents and visitors alike. The destination will house six distinctive development districts centred around tailored experiences that blend real with virtual architectural and engineering innovations. All to create a destination like no other on earth.

Trojena is part of NEOM’s regional plan, located 50km from the Gulf of Aqaba coast in the heart of our nature region – with elevations ranging from 1,500m to 2,600m and covering an area of nearly 60 square kilometres. Capitalising on the different climate in the area, where winter temperatures drop below zero celsius and yearround temperatures are generally 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the region – with its clear fresh air and stunning views, Trojena will not only be a mesmerising place to visit, but also a magical place to live and work.

The pavilion – one of the undeniable

highlights of more than 200 pavilions across Expo 2020 Dubai’s vast site –welcomed almost 200,000 visitors between 1 October 2021 and 31 March 2022. The pavilion is inspired by the book My Story: 50 Memories from 50 years of Service by HH Sheikh Mohammed, whose vision has shaped Dubai, one of the world’s most dynamic and successful cities, and host of the first World Expo in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region.

After graduating from the Ecole d'Architecture Athenaeum Lausanne in 1995, he flew to So Paulo in search of creative challenges. This is where he honed his skills and fell in love with the business. While working on luxury residential and commercial spaces

with the effervescent Sig Bergamin, one of Brazil's most influential interior designers, he learned inspirational techniques with artful abandon.

His entrepreneurial mission began with his partner Siavosh Adeli in Switzerland and later in Dubai, where he established his second venture. Swiss Bureau Interior Design is now a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, and rapidly expanding agency that has been in operation for 19 years.

Abuelnasr is a new-age leader with more than 20 years of international experience around the world. Yasser believes that spaces shape our lives, and his day-to-day interaction with designs that we can feel and appreciate.

Abuelnasr’s background in different layers of his carrier added a lot to how he appreciates architecture, from his hometown Alexandria where he worked on cultural research projects supervised by the World Bank, to moving to Dubai in 2005, when the city was booming, exposed him to innumerable projects and scales and in turn, have given him the time to appreciate and understand principles of urban development and heritage preservation.

Anzolin with his 30 years of experience in architecture evolved with a passion for architecture and a commitment to deliver quality to society whilst maintaining its identity and core values. Anzolin was born in Italy and was always interested in architecture.

He began his experiences in Rome after graduating from the University of Naples, where he was closely linked to the restoration and recovery of the immense heritage, but the desire to see new works created was always stronger. This was the leading factor that propelled him to leave his hometown for a new adventure and to promote the creation of Whitespace Architecture in 2010, with Abuelnasr, with the sole objective to prove that Western European culture can co-exist with Arabic culture and beyond.

Earth, air and water contribute to a fire Tanween 2022

The planet’s resources are enjoying increased attention as the world population crosses the landmark eight billion figure. There’s a growing sentiment that the key to humanity’s survival lies in collaboration on an unprecedented scale, not just among people but

we also need to explore creative new ways of working with both technology and nature. The creative industries are in a unique position to drive this march into the future.

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture’s flagship Tanween creativity season this year explored creative collaboration, and while sustainable solutions were a recurring theme, artistic beauty wasn’t neglected.

Someone once described one of my structures as somewhere between a womb and a cathedral –monumental yet also warm and intimate,” says Alan Parkinson, one of the speakers at the event hosted at Ithra’s landmark Snøhetta-designed building in Dhahran, KSA. “At the same time, it fills a need in people. I find that analogy quite apt.”

The veteran architect behind the poetically named Architects of Air uses colored plastic as one would stained glass in structures he calls luminaria, inflatable installations that evoke the jumping castles of youth but created with adults in mind. “I want people to experience the special light inside the structures, and leave them with a sense of wonder and beauty,” he says.

The UK-based Architects of Air celebrated its 30th anniversary with the unveiling of its latest structure, the Dodecalis Luminarium, at the event – fitting, as his work is intrinsically linked to the region. Parkinson says he’s fascinated by the geometric elements found in Islamic art and architecture that upon repeat become patterns the human eye is drawn to. “We can’t but look for patterns in the world around us as we attempt to make sense of things,” he explains.

“When I began building walk-in inflatable environments in the mid-’80s, I was inspired by the beauty of geometry and excited about how to work with the geometry of pneumatic structures to create objects of beauty. The intrinsic geometry of pneumatic forms lends itself to working with compatible geometric 2D patterns and in the designing of my second inflatable environment in 1987 I discovered the unity of patterns in the Islamic tradition offered a structurally logical way to introduce graphic elements.

Parkinson says he designs luminaria because he wants to share his sense of wonder at the phenomenon of light. “A luminarium provides the frame for an encounter with a light whose surprising and simple intensity cuts through conditioned perception.”

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, also known as Ithra – an Arabic word meaning “enrichment” – presents Tanween annually to support the development of the creative industry, and to empower established and emerging creatives, as seen in its Challenges, where the next generation of designers can showcase their skills while developing practical solutions to real-world issues.

The Ergonomics Ablution Challenge, one of five held this year, was designed to deliver a new faucet that is not only accessible to all users but also sustainable in terms of managing water, a precious resource.

Challenge winner Asma Abdulaziz Aldualeg’s winning faucet prototype “Medea” uses sensors to provide a user-centered solution that dispenses the Prophet’s recommended water measure of one “mudd”, the equivalent of 510g of water. The project aims to raise awareness among worshipers to be more conscious of their water consumption.

Back in the professional realm, Prof. Marcus Farr – who has been called an “architectural material wizard” –takes a more earthly approach in his work, driven by geometric patterns on a microscopic level. “Sand is the most-consumed natural material on Earth – even more than air and water,” he explains. “From glass to concrete and asphalt and even computers – the modern city wouldn’t exist without sand.”

Prof Farr, who is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the American University of Sharjah and Director of the Material Artifact Studio, explains this type of sand is too alkaline, too dense, too small and too round for this practice. “It stacks like marbles, while marine sand is triangular.”

These factors contribute to sustainability issues related to the more desirable marine sand, which has a negative impact on the environment and has been linked to societal problems including so-called sand mafias.

Prof. Farr is concerned with positioning dune sand – which though not renewable is abundant – as an alternative building material, especially in the region. By using a sustainable binding material, this sand can be modeled into bricks, blocks and 3D-printed sculptures, lending

pragmatism to less-risky uses like sidewalks and landscape pavers, and an aesthetic quality due to its unusual beauty. “It’s a material that we have an absolute massive abundance of that is currently not being used,” he says. “My research and my work focus on using local materials for local projects.

“Sand is an incredibly special material that fits into its context in ways other materials do not, and because it’s a natural material it has its own behavior and a kind of performative value embedded into it.”

Prof. Farr likens this quality of sand formations to self-organized sand mashrabiya that can be programmed or prescribed. “The beautiful nature of sand is that it creates its own geometry.”

Beauty with a purpose might just be the way forward.

Concrete—a construction material that’s thousands of years old In past ages, concrete must have seemed almost magical. It’s a man-made stone that starts out as a liquid but hardens into a solid that lasts forever. Human beings were already using materials similar to concrete 14,000 years ago. The Pantheon in Rome is not the oldest example, but it’s one of the most impressive. The overarching dome, which is made of Roman concrete (opus caementitium in Latin), has a span of more than 40 meters. It still astonishes visitors today, almost 1,900 years after it was built. In the 19th century the type of concrete we know today finally began its triumphal march—in buildings, bridges, tunnels, and road surfaces. About 30 billion tons of concrete are used for construction every year, about half of it in China. Today China produces and uses more concrete in two years than the USA has produced and used in the entire 20th century (see Data Mining on page 15). Other emerging economies are catching up and boosting the global demand even more. “Concrete has been a major contributor to lifting many millions of people out of poverty,” says Dr. Karen Scrivener, a materials scientist who heads the laboratory for construction materials at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (see the debate that begins on page 22). “And we need to continue this because people need a chance to lead a dignified life.”

Concrete is the world’s most important construction material. However, it does more harm to the climate than almost any other product. Researchers all over the world are working to improve this material’s CO2 balance by optimizing its composition. For example, they are using bacteria that can seal small cracks in concrete on their own and thus prolong the useful life of buildings

hen the chemist Dr. Anke Reinschmidt is explaining the special power of WallCraft, she asks visitors to stand very close to the concrete block that is dangling from a rope in the remotest corner of her laboratory in Essen. Only then can they see the thin white line that runs through the block. “Here you can see the place where the test piece was broken and has now bonded together again,” she explains. To demonstrate how firmly the crack has been mended, her team has suspended a pail of sand from the concrete block. The word “mended” is

The bacteria in the brown powder can be easily mixed into mortar or cement. For the microbes, this en- vironment is so alien that they remain in their spore state. Theoretically, this type of hibernation could enable them to survive forever. Only if water seeps into the concrete— for example, through a fine stress crack in a structural element—do the microbes revive and start producing calcium carbonate, or limestone, through their metabolic process. The limestone seals the crack automatically, the water source dries up, and the bacteria go back into hibernation—until the next case of water damage.

Evonik is not the only company that has set great hopes on this development. After all, enabling concrete buildings to repair themselves and thus substantially lengthen their useful life is an important step in economic and environmental terms. But the problem is much bigger than the tiny bacteria. It begins with the vast demand for fresh concrete. Both concrete and cement, which is one of its main components, are everywhere, and the global demand for them grows every year. At last count, the annual demand was more than four billion tons.

The biggest defect of concrete is due primarily to cement. This binder is mixed with water and aggregates such as sand or gravel to make concrete. Cement pro- duction releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide. The cement industry alone is responsible for eight percent of man-made global CO2 emissions. The effect on the climate varies widely, depending on the type of cement production. In Germany, cement production releases 590 kilograms of CO2 per ton of cement on average, but in other countries that figure is much higher.

Solutions For A Conservative Sector

“We solve problems. That’s what we’ve always done,” says Reinschmidt. Here Evonik is testing many different additives that improve concrete. For example, superplasticizers combined with defoamers from Evonik make it possible to use less water in the mix. That makes the concrete harder, yet capable of being pumped up to the top floor of the highest skyscraper. Shrinkage reducers minimize concrete components’ tendency to deform or crack as they harden. Air-entraining agents ensure that air bubbles are distributed throughout the concrete in exactly the right sizes and amounts. “If there’s too much or too little air in the concrete, or if it’s unequally distributed, the structural element is damaged,” says Reinschmidt. And hydrophobing agents prevent water from penetrating the hardened material.

Refilling Instead Of Demolition

The concept of a self-healing concrete has been circulating in the sector for quite a while. In fact, conventional concrete also has the ability to seal small cracks on its own. However, in most cases this process takes much too long. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich have been experimenting for some time now with fine glass capillaries that are filled with liquid plastic and embedded in concrete.

When the capillaries break because of movements within the concrete, the plastic runs out and glues together any cracks that have formed. Several research teams are also studying bacteria.

At Evonik, this concept emerged during an in-house idea competition in 2016. The breakthrough came as a result of net- working by construction chemists in Essen and biotechnologists in Halle-Künsebeck, where Evonik operates its biggest biotechnology lab. Three other labs are located in Marl, Hanau, and Shanghai. The group recently reorganized

and consolidated all of its biotechnology expertise. These researchers are working on a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from fermentation processes for cosmetic raw materials to synbiotics for gut health.

Microbes Replace Manual Work

The selected strain of Bacillus subtilis is an especially tough representative of the hay bacteria group. These bacteria exist almost everywhere, and they thrive just as well in the soil as in the human gut. However, concrete is an inhospitable environment for these microorganisms. Cement is alkaline, and as it hardens it develops temperatures over 60°C. However, the WallCraft bacterium is not too bothered by either the heat, the hostile pH value or the spiky crystals in hardened concrete. Besides, when it comes into contact with water it quickly begins to metabolize the sources of carbon provided. Evonik equips the microbes with the provisions they need, right from the start. The precise composition of this nutrient is

a well-kept secret. “In addition to the bacterial strain, for which we have registered a patent, the nutrient formulation is our most important trade secret,” says Falke. The only thing he’s willing to reveal is that sugar, the favorite food of many bacteria, is not part of it. Sugar would be poison for every kind of concrete because it disrupts the hardening process.

Plans call for this material with its microbes to be used in the future all over the world, not only in garages but also in apartment blocks, bridges, dams and beyond. That could greatly help concrete, the universal construction material, to go on having a bright future.

A visionary project by Matrix, the division of Giorgetti who was founded in 1985 to edit collections characterised by a disruptive sculptural sign and a decidedly free stylistic language. Made with the interlocking technique, it is assembled without the use of any glue, which makes the 32 components of the seat completely separable. The available polychromy amplifies its original character. A perfect addition for this year's Christmas.
