Design Infinity receives LEED GOLD certification for its Airtel Africa Services project in Dubai

Design Infinity receives the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification for its interior design and build project with Airtel Africa Services (UK) Ltd. This is the first project for which Design Infinity has attained LEED Gold certification for its client since the company started offering LEED certification from last year. This offering was announced by Design Infinity on its 10th Corporate Anniversary last year. Airtel Africa Services (UK) Ltd office received the highest level of points in LEED Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) Commercial Interiors v4 certification in GCC, and has achieved 70 points in the USGBC rating in the telecommunication sector.

Pratap Mendonca, managing partner of Design Infinity, commented: “We were entrusted with the

responsibility of providing tailored fit-out solutions for Airtel’s new Middle East office. We created a smart workplace that transcends the physical boundaries of the cubicle and office, creating an environment of collaboration and communication that fosters productivity and increases employee satisfaction.”

Geetha Nayak, managing partner of Design Infinity, commented: “We aim to provide sustainable solutions for our clients. By creating the LEED certified workplace for our reputed client, we will continue to focus on greener offices, promote higher productivity and bring significant energy savings for Airtel’s Head office. Our team has done a marvelous job in designing as well as executing the office space, spread over two floors in Building 20, Dubai Internet City.” Design Infinity last year moved to a bigger, new, fully equipped new 60,000sqft joinery factory comprising state-of-the-art machinery. The company also started its own signage and upholstery division, demonstrating quality craftsmanship.

This is the first time Design Infinity has achieved LEED Gold certification for a client.

Bob Weis, the former president of Walt Disney Imagineering, joins Gensler

Gensler, the global architecture, design, and planning firm, announced that former President of Walt Disney Imagineering, Bob Weis, is joining the firm as Global Immersive Experience Design Leader. A visionary within the entertainment industry, Weis brings to Gensler more than 30 years of leadership, creating, designing and developing some of Disney’s most iconic projects around the globe.

As countries emerge from the global pandemic, demand is greater than ever for engaging, immersive experiences and more meaningful human connections. Weis’ experience in pioneering large-scale groundbreaking and story-driven experiences further expands Gensler’s ability to drive design innovation, offering transformative value to the firm’s more than 4,000 global clients as they look for opportunities to bring people together in new and exciting ways.

For Gensler Middle East, Weis’ appointment affords an opportunity

to augment its existing offering to its culture and entertainment clients with a particular focus on KSA and the UAE. During his time at Disney, Weis led more than 200 major projects around the world with a capital value of more than $30 billion. He has also consulted with major clients including Smithsonian, National Geographic, NASA, and the United States Navy, among others. Bob has received numerous industry accolades and awards and remains closely connected to his Disney roots.

THE FITOUT reveals the latest exquisite interior design work for Abu Dhabi’s Newby Tea Cafe

THE FITOUT successfully completed its latest interior developments for the Newby Tea Cafe in Abu Dhabi. The cafe features THE FITOUT’s unique and sustainable range of interior solutions, which also comprised civil, floor, and lighting work among others. The project’s success was enhanced by its early completion, adding another milestone to the company’s growing record of

accomplishments.

THE FITOUT used its distinctive range of interior solutions to develop the latest branch of the Newby Tea Cafe, with some of the key elements being a folding partition made of gold leaf, a ten-meter floating table in the reception, and a golden metallic mesh. The company also undertook civil work, such as building walls and partitions, as well as screeding and waterproofing solutions for wet conditions. The ceiling work, which included gypsum ceilings and metallic panels for the reception spaces, along with flooring works such as self-levelling, carpet works, parquet flooring, and more, were successfully managed by the professional teams of THE FITOUT. Sherif Nagy, general manager of THE FITOUT, stated: “Since its inception in 1987, our company has grown to become a reliable provider of complete interior solutions that meet the highest standards in regard to both quality and services. As one of the leading suppliers of customised highend joinery works and fit-out solutions, our recent completion of the Newby Tea Cafe has once again demonstrated our

passion for quality finishing and interior solutions. Newby Tea has a proud history as an award-winning luxury tea brand. We were committed to maintaining the authenticity and richness of this brand throughout the project, which allowed us to deliver elegant interior designs for the brand. With many more similar projects in the future, we are confident that we can further solidify our position as a reliable provider of fitout solutions.”

The highest levels of quality were also met for the wall finishes, which included the use of an emulsion paint finish, premium wallpapers, marble cladding, FR MDF cladding, and moulding. Along with providing an adequate amount of lighting with LED strips, spotlights, and SS fixtures, the company also made sure to include advanced glass works, door finishes, and other joinery works like coat hangers, pantry lounges, and cabinets for the female lounge. All MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) works were also completed with the utmost professionalism to guarantee the safety and comfort of customers of the Newby Tea Cafe.

Swiss Bureau celebrates 20 years in Dubai. What are your thoughts, and how has your experience been?

Looking back, I am in awe of how far the Swiss Bureau has come! When I began this journey in Dubai - a city that offers and continues to offer designers boundless opportunities to express themselves wholly in their craft, my goal was simple. It was to design unique interiors and take part in playing a small but meaningful role in shaping this phenomenal city that was forming in right front of my eyes.

In the past two decades, I've been honoured to witness Dubai's construction and social transformation, and it has been nothing short of a blessing. There are few places in the world where cultural, social and professional changes have occurred so rapidly, and the fact that this evolution will continue to unfold is the most incredible part of it all! Being a part of this experience has been truly unique, and the Swiss Bureau has grown in parallel, benefitting from all these transformations and allowing me to flourish along with it.

Tell us about your journey and the changes you've seen in the design and build industry over the last two decades. My journey has been a long apprenticeship strewn with emotions akin to being on a roller coaster! It has been challenging but ultimately rewarding as I built a path toward entrepreneurship while maintaining my identity as a designer. While in architecture school, I graduated with creativity, but it also came with a certain level of naivety, being unprepared for the practicalities of starting and running your firm. However, Dubai allowed me to accelerate this learning process and gain valuable experience at a rapid pace!

Today, the Swiss Bureau is well-equipped to handle projects of all sizes, whether in a consulting or design and build capacity. Over the years, the responsibilities and challenges have undergone a significant transformation, and it's essential to be agile and adaptable to meet the evolving demands of our clients. With that said, we have proven ourselves to be a reliable partner with the ability to deliver high-quality results that meet and exceed their expectations.

Are the original members of your core team still on board? How crucial is a strong team to success?

Yes! Swiss Bureau is all about building a strong and engaged team. We don't just have employees; we are a family of dedicated professionals, some of whom have been with us for over 15 years! This speaks to the unshakable foundation of our team and the culture of excellence we've cultivated here, prioritising teamwork and mutual respect above all else. A solid

team is a driving force behind success in any industry, and it has been our top priority to build and nurture it. The past few years have seen much dedication, effort, and resources invested in creating an environment where everyone can flourish, and it's paid off in spades. We're a group of individuals united in our mission to deliver unparalleled service, all while having fun and maintaining a sense of discipline. We are pirates when it comes to getting the job done, but we've got the discipline of Navy SEALs to ensure everything runs smoothly. It is this unique combination that makes us a force to be reckoned with!

How would you describe your leadership style?

As with every company leader, my focus is on guiding and motivating the teams to reach new heights and achieve our common goal. I refuse to be a dictator! Instead, I make it my mission to empower each member to be a leader in their own right. When new employees join our team, regardless of their position, I believe they have valuable experiences and insights to offer. Their opinions matter, and I will always welcome their ideas for improvements. We operate in a democracy where everyone is encouraged to lead in their areas of expertise >>>

and share their knowledge. Leadership involves communication, active listening, and making the right decisions. These decisions are not made alone. I gather the thoughts and opinions of our top management team and make decisions as a collective. Together is the only way to go.

You have clients around the world— what have you learned about working across cultures?

The beauty of the industry in Dubai lies in the constant interaction with clients

from all corners of the world. It requires an understanding of diverse cultures, customs, and approaches to business, but ultimately every client and project is tied by a common thread of professionalism and creativity. The ability to adapt and excel in this dynamic environment, the cultural exchanges, and the pursuit of excellence make this industry an extraordinary and rewarding field to be in. Working with people from different backgrounds and creating something super unique and beautiful drives my work, and it's an honour to be part of it.

What are the most important lessons you've learned in your career spanning two decades?

Follow your instinct. Stay honest and ethical. Never abandon your efforts when faced with a wall of challenges if you believe in what you have built.

How important is it for you to cultivate relationships while working on client projects?

Client relationships form a fundamental part of SBID’s approach. The success of a project is almost always a direct reflection of the people involved and their ability to work effectively together. A project team is made up of multiple parties, all of whom need to play their part. So our relationships are almost always critical to our success. It’s about our ability to bring project teams together with a shared vision and to align and communicate clearly. It’s especially important to cultivate strong relationships when working on fast-track and complex deliverables. This includes the client’s team, supply chain, landlord, local authorities, sub-consultants, and internal SBID teams. We rely upon having relationships based on transparency and trust so that when challenges arise, we can resolve them quickly, conflict-free, and in the project's best interest.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment so far?

If we're talking on the business side of things, reaching two decades of existence is a pinnacle achievement! To come to

Dubai with nothing but a vision and the determination to succeed, and to have now cultivated a flourishing company employing over 50 talented individuals, speaks a language of grit and ambition being invested. But it's not only a personal accomplishment; the chance to provide young designers and our dedicated team with growth and advancement opportunities is a source of immense pride and fulfilment truly beyond measure.

Can you give an insight into the challenges and highlights of running your own practice?

This feature doesn't have enough space for my answer!

Challenges are an inescapable part of any successful business. It starts from recruiting top talent to ensuring seamless operations. It's not just about designing exceptional projects but also delivering them on time and within budget, all while managing customer relations and overseeing multiple departments such as sales, marketing, finance, and HR. These are skills that aren't typically taught in design school. This is why I joined the Entrepreneur Organization (EO) 3 years ago. They're an international organization empowering entrepreneurs to reach their full potential in business and life through connections, shared experiences, and learning from one another. It's a community where we're encouraged to be candid and transparent as we share our experiences while learning from other entrepreneurs, no matter the industry. Through EO, I've gained invaluable insights and tools to tackle everyday business challenges.

What have been the most fulfilling projects you have worked on and why? Built and unbuilt examples are fine. One project that stands out as truly exceptional is the Room of the Emirates project for the United Nations in Geneva. It was a truly unique and challenging endeavour that required creative storytelling, a blending of cultural heritage and technology, and remote collaboration with a client based in Switzerland. Through this project, we captured the raw beauty of the desert and emulated the experience of the desert sky from sunrise to sunset. The success of the

project was not only instrumental in showcasing the UAE's excellence on a global scale but has also solidified a long-lasting relationship with the Ministry of Presidential Affairs. Honestly, this project will forever hold a special place in my heart.

What does receiving the prestigious Interior Designer of the Year title mean to you?

What are your thoughts on the Design Middle East Awards?

This award is a true reward and is even more special as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. It truly is the best present we could ask for. As designers, receiving such recognition is a celebration of the passion that drives our creations and the success of our company. It serves as a reminder of why we do what we do and how our designs impact the world. We are deeply grateful to Design Middle East for organizing this award event. It is an honour for all of us at the Swiss Bureau and serves as recognition for all employees who have been a part of the Swiss Bureau, as well as the efforts and creativity of the whole Tribe of Designers we have in Dubai.

What are you currently working on, and what does the future hold for SBID?

The last stretch of our last quarter in 2022 was a crucial one for us, securing a plethora of exciting new projects that have us on the edge of our seats! While we can't disclose the specifics just yet (such is the norm with high-level clients), we can tell you that the Swiss Bureau is currently working on a trifecta of luxurious office spaces, a grandiose government facility, a state-of-the-art, 14,000 sqft school, a technology-driven corporate office in Saudi Arabia, and we are doubling down on our F&B and Hospitality department with plans for a chic beach club and a stylish boutique hotel all in the works. The future is bright in the Middle East, and we're thrilled to be at the forefront of shaping one of the hottest places in the world!

ATTIKO, which is derived from the word "attic," inspired the concept. In Ancient Eastern culture, the last floor of a building was often referred to as the closest point to heaven.

02/ Michael Magill

Michael Magill is RSP's Middle East and North Africa Managing Director and Creative Director. Magill believes that architecture revolves around people and their interactions with their surroundings. He hopes to create design projects that will last for generations by combining Innovative Design and cutting-edge technology.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic over the last two years, which resulted in on-going projects being put on hold/delayed and the pipeline of new projects slowing down, Michael determined that it would be more beneficial to divide business development efforts 50% in the MENA region and 50% in completely new markets such as Indonesia and Cambodia. This approach proved to be a success as RSP was able to win projects for both architecture and interior design teams for several mixed-use and hospitality developments. As a result, the Dubai studio has since grown almost double in size since 2020 and the office space has expanded to a second unit in Marina Plaza to accommodate everyone. >>>

Despite a difficult business environment, the studio was able to win exciting new projects in the region under Magill's guardianship and design leadership, including Huawei, Aldar, Al Futtaim, Majid Al Futtaim, Ellington Properties, and Diriyah Gate Development Authority.

Magill has also been instrumental in the business's expansion by opening two additional studios abroad. In 2023, the company will concentrate on expanding its presence in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

In 2022 alone, Magill led the design team to win prestigious projects like the Armani Hotel & Branded Residences in Diriyah Gate which was a competition where the winner was selected by Giorgio Armani himself, more recently another international world-renowned hotel brand located Saadiyat Island, Majid Al Futtaim’s luxury villas Tilal Al Ghaf in Dubai, the newest luxury

residences on the Palm Ellington Beach House, a mountainside high-end retail development in Sentul Indonesia and several other largescale residential & wellness resort projects across the UAE which are in the early stages of design.

Magill was part of the team who decided it was time for RSP to take a different route and delve into an alternate reality. He spearheaded our very first project in the metaverse which was an NFT Gallery in Decentraland. It was a floating NFT gallery nexus with an infinity helix platform cycling through the viewing platforms. The building features a unique kinetic skin facade, emulating nature as the building breathes and shifts.

Magill was named RSP's Global Head of Design in 2021 and has since actively worked with other RSP design studios to develop the group's profile and design skills across a variety of building

typologies. He leads the monthly RSP Global Design Forum, which allows key designers to share their experiences and design ideas through panel discussions on a virtual platform. He is currently developing a strategy to improve and integrate RSP's 12 design studios through consistent virtual sharing of live projects around the world.

His efforts and contribution to the industry were recognised in 2020 and 2021 as he won Architect of the Year at the Middle East Design Awards.

Magill's peers and juniors have consistently praised him for his constant positivity, calm demeanour, and ability to build strong relationships with colleagues and clients alike. \ Sheybarah Hotel is a 73 key hyper luxury resort located on the uninhabited Shaybara Island located 45-minutes by boat from the mainland. The site is home to a highly diverse environment with dense mangroves, desert flora, white sand dunes beaches, coral flats and sea grass, and some of the most beautiful and pristine coral reefs in the world hosting many species of birds, fish and other marine animals.\

In his early career, Killa has won multiple global awards including ENR News Maker Award, New York, the Global Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction for the Lighthouse Tower, and CTBUH Best Tall Building in the Middle East Award for Bahrain World Trade Centre.

Killa Design was established in Dubai in 2015, and he has worked on signature projects, including the award-winning designs for the Museum of the Future, the Address Beach Resort, W hotel Namaste, Vida Dubai Marina & Yacht Club, Marsa Al Arab, Sheybarah Island, Aykon Twin Towers, and the Office of the Future, the first occupied printed building in the world.

Sanjay Tanwani

Sanjay Tanwani leads the Urbanism + Planning (U+P) studio for AECOM in the Middle East & Africa (MEA). Tanwani has over 19 years of experience working on projects in 25 countries and is instrumental in both building capability within the studio and shaping AECOM's approach to new international markets. He has an impressive international portfolio of projects ranging from strategic-level planning to

heritage and transport-led urban design as a trained architect and urban designer.

As regional director for the U+P studio, Tanwani is responsible for expanding local business. This includes delivering some of the region’s most significant and complex projects, while simultaneously building relationships with clients through targeted front-end advisory. He is currently leading projects such as a concept masterplan for a 20km-long arterial city spine that is facing some of the most urgent urban challenges, and developing a spatial framework for an entire city to accommodate exponential yet sustainable growth - a balancing act that requires a deep understanding of various technical disciplines along with macroeconomics, future trends and urban governance. Some of his more radical and creative projects include reimagining the future of manufacturing and logistics for a stateof-the-art industrial city and rethinking knowledge ecosystems within technology and innovation clusters. These innovative visions not only push the boundaries of city design but are rooted in the fundamentals of placemaking and are climatically sensitive and contextually appropriate.

Ensuring the regional U+P studio is at the forefront of design innovation and acknowledged for its pioneering design solutions, Tanwani actively seeks to streamline and advance digital capabilities. Most notably, Tanwani leads ‘Vantage’ an R&D team consisting of futurists, economists and built-environment experts, who aspire to unlock new opportunities and streams within the digital sphere. This includes the development of custom machine-learning platforms and the use of AI in analyses, design and monitoring performance of masterplans.

Most recently, ‘Vantage’ has been developing and testing AI-Driven Impact Assessment models for running urban design scenarios, optimising urban data and visualising KPIs. He has tremendous plans for the ‘Vantage’ team in 2023, including the expansion of the existing team, collaborating with subject matter experts and developing a digital twin platform for one of the fastest-growing cities in the region.

Tanwani moved to Dubai in 2020 as part of a strategic initiative by AECOM to build on the team's front-end design capabilities. His extensive exposure

unique perspective on growing teams focussed on tackling the biggest urban challenges in the region. In his previous role, Tanwani was key to the growth and success of the Atkins London urban design and landscape studio which tripled in size during his tenure there. Tanwani ’s involvement in this 700-hectare project developed around the UNESCO World Heritage Site, helped its ambition to be one of the world’s best cultural destinations. Sanjay’s global, yet targeted, perspective on urban development is also emphasised in projects that he has successfully delivered outside of the region like the Bouregreg masterplan in Rabat, Morocco.

In Belgium, Tanwani led the design

environmentally challenging site of a disused former coal mine on the edge of Belgium’s only National Park. In Central America, Sanjay has worked on projects ranging from hospitality and mixeduse developments in Panama, to help develop growth strategies for cities in Colombia. Notably, Tanwani contributed to the delivery of Panama Pacifico, a 2000-hectare mixed-use development on the former site of the Howard US Air Force base next to the Panama Canal. As custodian of the original masterplan, he worked closely with the client’s development and investment teams to identify and design unique product offerings for a volatile and challenging economic market.

Outside of work, he has held nonexecutive positions for organisations in the UK, including serving as elected Governor for Goodenough College (one of the Royal Charities). Here, he was part of the real estate committee and was instrumental in overseeing the redevelopment and sale of Byron Court, a historic structure overlooking Mecklenburgh Square in Central London, which was repurposed as a state-of-art residential complex for NYU to house 230 students.

Tanwani is a firm believer that the role of architects and urbanists extends beyond creativity, with a huge responsibility to put people at the centre of our urban design. Looking ahead, he sees an identifiable shift in how cities are being conceived in this region, with increased collaboration across disciplines and environmentally sensitive approaches to deliver strong ambitious visions that are bound to have a positive impact on people's lives.

Custer holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the US and is a licensed architect and NCARB certified.  He is also a LEED Green Associate and an executive at large member of the American Institute of Architects Middle East (AIA ME).

Custer's passion is urban mixed-use projects, and he is committed to improving communities by utilising sensible, sustainable, and creative vertically stacked mixed-use configurations.

Custer leads a team of approximately 150 architects and engineers across KEO's offices, collaborating with them to create designs that push boundaries and projects that address sustainability issues, utilising architecture to create community-driven, smart, urban mixeduse environments for today and tomorrow. These start with solutions within the architectural concept design process with his teams guiding clients, making the case that sustainability is an investment and not a cost.

He sees technology as a significant enabler for a better tomorrow, and investing in digital design will be a priority for KEO Design this year as the industry pushes for a stronger connection between the human and machine to enable design teams to deliver solutions that fully leverage all available design technology.

Darryl Custer serves as the Managing Director of the Design Division for KEO International Consultants.

He has 33 years of design leadership and project management experience with a keen understanding of development, design, and operations across multiple sectors. Currently based in the UAE, Darryl’s experience is truly global, spanning China and Southeast Asia, the US, the GCC, and North Africa.

Since 1975, Brian Johnson has maintained an almost constant presence in the Gulf region, opening the Godwin Austen Johnson headquarters in Dubai in 1991.

Johnson's distinct style and unwavering commitment to design excellence have made him and the firm a preferred partner for many distinguished projects throughout the region. His guiding principles are based on the desire to provide bespoke one-off design solutions that respond to and build on the client's hopes and aspirations to provide a long-lasting, functional, and appealing environment.

Johnson and the design team have had a busy year, completing and handing over ten projects in the last 12 months including ISG School in KSA; Citizens School, and Ladybird Nursery in Dubai; Warner Bros Hotel in Abu Dhabi; DoubleTree by Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island Residences; DoubleTree by Hilton Sharjah; Ramallah School Palestine; and others.

University and a Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.) from the University of Cincinnati. In the past, Patel has worked on prestigious projects such as Dubai Expo 2020 Village, Kuwait Investment Authority HQ, and Paramount Towers by DAMAC. Today, major Saudi government clients rely on his skills and expertise; and recently he and his team were distinguished by AIA’s Middle East Award for their 1364 project in the Diplomatique Quarter, Riyadh.

Raya Ani is the founder and design director of the award-winning studio RAW-NYC Architects based in New York City and Dubai. She has over 25 years of international experience as a multidisciplinary architect and urban designer, having worked in Baghdad, Boston, Dubai, Germany, and New York City. She is a licensed architect in New York City.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Baghdad University with distinction, and her master's in Architecture from MIT, where she was awarded the prestigious Harvard/MIT Aga Khan Scholarship.

As the 2017 President of the American Institute of Architects-Middle East Chapter, she launched AIA Middle East in Iraq to empower Iraqi architects through a global platform.

She designed the first green school and two green residential buildings in New York City. Raya Ani has been bestowed upon her the title of Fellow American Institute of Architects by the New York chapter for her excellence in design and outstanding contributions to the field of architecture.

Raya Ani’s boundless energy to inspire and empower through her creative and

strategic visions is seen in the Iraqi Pavilion at Expo 2020. She lobbied for Iraq’s participation at Expo 2020 and designed and supervised the construction of the Iraq Pavilion.

In 2022, she received the 2021 Takreem award for Environmental Development and Sustainability. The award recognises Arabs who have achieved excellence in their field of expertise.

Bruno Guelaff is the creative director of the BG Group in Dubai, UAE. He is a multi-disciplinary awardwinning designer. Guelaff, a Frenchman born in New York City, attended Lycée Français de New York before earning a bachelor's degree in sociology in the United States. After four years of studies at NYSID, he discovered his niche. Guelaff was the first recipient of the B.F. A. Travel Prize, which enabled him to travel the world, stopping in 15 countries and over 22 cities, an experience that influenced his design flair greatly. Guelaff has spent the last 14 years as the design director of the award-winning boutique firm studio Bruno guelaff'.

He has been heavily involved in all aspects of each project, from architecture to lighting, landscape design, furniture design, and branding. As a multi-disciplinary doyen, Guelaff ensures that all design elements culminate in a completely fluid personalised project. At the end of the day, it all comes down to emotions; emotions when we design + emotions when we live within the design,” explains Guelaff.

Guelaff's design philosophy has always been "The spaces we have the honour of crafting influence the way people will live in those spaces," with a sociology backbone. At the end of the day, it's all about emotions: emotions when we design and emotions when people interact in physical spaces. We shape how people interact with others and influence their daily lives through design," he feels.

He felt something was missing in the equation of the typical project process from conception to realisation over the years. There was a lack of fluidity in work ownership during the construction process, which is common when a large number of consultants are involved. The concept of master of all trades needed to be extended to project execution as well as conceptualisation.

10/ Pierre Martin Dufresne

P. Martin Dufresne, Co-founder and Design Principal at U+A, has had a very busy year. Not only has the company experienced rapid regional expansion, with an impressive list of new high-end projects on the horizon, but it has also welcomed new growth for its global reach with a recently established partnership with international giant Egis.

Dufresne was instrumental in bringing the firm's recognition as a world-class multi-disciplinary practise with an incredible portfolio of projects during his 17 years at the helm of U+A's distinctive design approach. Red Sea Global KSA, Emaar, North 25, Aldar, and, most recently, Expo entrusted their high-end luxury projects to U+A under Dufresne's expert eye for creating distinctive residential and hospitality brands.

His global reach comes from his lifelong interest with cultural diversity and his deep passion for travel. He left Canada in 1996, to live in Hong Kong where as design Architect with HOK on a multitude of high-end projects

in Asia Pacific, including China, the Philippines and Taiwan. Following a short work assignment in Japan, Martin moved to Singapore under famed Australian Architect Kerry Hill, during which time he enriched his passion for high-end luxury in both residential and hospitality.

Moving to Dubai in 2005, he established U+A together with his business partner Pedram Rad in 2007. Since then the company has grown to become one of the most sought after firms in the region. Both Martin and Pedram’s vision and ambitious plan for a world class practice proved well timed for the region’s thirst for luxury and quality.

The company’s growth now accounts for over 200 employees exercising a multitude of services, such as architecture, interior design, masterplanning, project management, and more recently annexing a new landscape division under Dufresne’s strong insistence of holistic design.

In the last year, Dufresne has added Academia to his list of responsibilities. The Canadian University of Dubai sought his professional expertise inviting him to become a member of the School of Architecture and Interior Design Advisory Board. Seeking his other board-members’ insight in the field allows the School a fair advantage in improving their curriculum.

Ammar Alassam is the Chief Executive Officer of Dewan Architects + Engineers, which is celebrating its 40th year in business this year. Since joining Dewan in 2001, he has implemented and developed the company's strategic growth plans. He led Ithmar Capital's investment in Dewan, allowing the firm to diversify and become a regional multidisciplinary, multi-market leading firm of architects and engineers with a more institutionalised approach.

Serving as Chief Executive Officer and member of the board of directors, Alassam continues to be actively involved in developing new business opportunities, harnessing strategic relationships and partnerships, and breaking into new vertical and geographical markets. He was responsible for the firm's diversification and entry into Southeast Asia and Vietnam.

In recent years, he has expanded their market share into Egypt and established a design excellence hub in Cairo. Alassam

has grown to be one of the top 40 firms in the world and one of the top five in the region, with big plans for the future. The firm recently announced the acquisition of iconic projects in Saudi Arabia, including Qiddiya and The Red Sea Development Company.

Mohamed Ali

Mohamed Ali is Meinhardt Middle East's Regional Design Director and head of Master Planning, Interior Design, Urban Planning, and Architecture.

Ali was appointed in 2022 to build the architectural design capabilities and develop the regional portfolio as an added value to Meinhardt's strong presence in the Middle East since 1997 as a significant engineering player.

His primary goal is to establish a quality culture that will guide his design strategy for mindful growth and to acquire prestigious projects with high-end developers in the region.

Ali's first goal was to design Meinhardt's new office in Dubai Media City to accommodate their 300+ architect and engineer growth plan; the estimate is based on current project requirements and timeframes.

The new department is already bidding on a number of large projects with prestigious Middle Eastern clients and is busy delivering Four Season Sindalah Island with Neom and the biggest mall in Makkah with Hamat and Umm al-Qura.

Ali is skilled at identifying added values that lead to disruptive ideas outside of the traditional box. These concepts increase the building's usability and efficiency while preserving its elegance and human character. >>>

REGIONAL DESIGN DIRECTOR

Technology is the key to any exponential growth, and design is no exception. With this in mind, Ali is developing a Digital Delivery unit to broaden the horizon for design opportunities through data-driven techniques such as generative design. The unit will also be in charge of developing Digital Twins and the metaverse. Having said that, classical architectural workflows of the world's great masters are still in the DNA of the department methodology and approach, blending with building services and structural engineering to deliver an all-in-one high-end product and usher in a new chapter for Meinhardt, becoming more design-oriented and offering more value-added services.

Sumaya Dabbagh

Dabbagh Architects is an award-winning Architectural design practice based in Dubai, UAE. It is recognized regionally for its contemporary design and quality-driven service.

The practice was established in 2008 in Dubai, becoming one of the first in the Gulf to become an RIBA Chartered Practice in 2015 . It set out to create contemporary Architecture that is culturally and environmentally sensitive. An Architecture that explores themes of identity, context and place.

Founded by Sumaya Dabbagh, the Saudi architect is at the forefront of women in architecture in the Middle East. She is one of the few Saudi women of her generation to train as an architect, and one of the first women to found her own practice in the UAE. In 2019 Sumaya won the title ‘Principal of the Year” at the Middle East Architects Awards, and became a finalist at The Tamayouz Award for Women of Outstanding Achievements. In 2021 she became one of the first women architects to design a mosque in the UAE. Sumaya continues to challenge stereotypes and strives to bridge cultural and gender divides with her sensitive approach to design and Architecture.

Her practice, Dabbagh Architects have successfully completed a number of prestigious projects in the commercial, private and public sectors and continue to fulfil their mission through their unique innovative designs.

Some of their highly acclaimed projects such as The Mleiha Archaeological Centre building (2016) as well Gargash Mosque (2021) have been globally recognised as significant examples of a new emerging approach to Architecture in the region. Both projects were nominated for Agha Khan Awards and won multiple awards including the prestigious international award; Architecture Master Prize. Currently the practice is working on a new Mosque project in the UAE as well as a number of significant cultural projects in UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Jason Burnside

As one of the region's most experienced architects, Jason Burnside has developed long-term client relationships that have resulted in repeat business on numerous occasions. Burnside's involvement with the Arcadia School and Arcadia High School led to the client awarding Godwin Austen Johnson the latest new school in the portfolio, the Arcadia Global School, which is currently under construction in Al Furjan.

In addition, Burnside and his team are back on site with the new C Hub which is due for completion later this year. This new addition to the campus sees the continuation of a relationship which spans more than 35 years.

While he may be renowned for his school projects, Burnside has also led the design of a number of internationally branded hotels across the Middle East which has included the Warner Bros Hotel in Abu Dhabi, the DoubleTree by Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island Residences and the DoubleTree by Hilton Sharjah.

Several new projects are keeping Burnside and his team busy, particularly in Saudi Arabia where the design team are working on a large cultural project and a residential project, both in Riyadh. In Dubai, the team are working on the Serenia Living project, which follows the success of the Serenia Residences, also on The Palm Jumeirah, designed and handed over by GAJ in 2018.

According to Burnside: “2022 saw a significant increase in the number of projects awarded across the region as the design industry rebounds post pandemic. For 2023 the outlook remains positive, however with the increased demand, pressure to deliver projects on time and within budget will be a significant challenge as will recruiting new talent to service growing portfolios.”

Henrique Dias

Since his early days working in the Vodafone headquarters project in his home country of Portugal, Henrique Dias' experience has spanned the globe. From private villas in Europe to mega-projects in China, he has approached every project with a passion for design and unwavering attention to detail. Dias began his career with Barbosa-Guimares, a Matosinhos, Portugal-based multidisciplinary boutique design firm.

Before moving to Guangzhou, China, to lead the design team at Jingseng Design, he developed his design ethos, which combines practical functionality with iconic language. After two years with Jingseng, Henrique moved to the UAE, where he is currently based.

With over 19 years of experience, Dias has designed some of the most high-profile projects in the region, having delivered projects for clients such as Meraas, Kingdom Holding Company, Al Shaya Holdings, Modon, and Emaar. His projects dot the GCC, including towers in Qatar and masterplans in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

With each one, he has brought a grounded flair to the final design, balancing the need for performance with visionary excellence Dias still believes he is just getting started and looks forward to continuing our mission of advancing the human experience through design.

As one of DLR Group’s Directors, he leads design across varying scales and industry sectors. He brings with him his experience from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, providing a global perspective to every building and plan he is a part of. Some of his most recent projects include the Jubail Island Development in Abu Dhabi and the Madinah Gate Double Tree Hotel in KSA.

His process begins with consideration for the ground truth and the final goal that must be achieved. He uses this as the basis for exploration, looking for ways to create unique experiences that will improve the lives of those who will eventually live there and the context in which it’s being built. This approach to economic prosperity, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship is what has made him stand out in the industry as one of the most effective design thinkers and communicators. >>>

DESIGN DIRECTOR

Dias' interest in the arts began at a very young age. Growing up in an art district, he was surrounded by creatives who instilled in him a desire to pursue a creative career. When it came time for him to select a profession to study, he chose architecture, a subject he pursued at the Lusaida University of Porto, earning his Master’s degree in Architecture. Despite his academic credentials, he continues to pursue education outside of professional practice. Henrique recognises that the field of architecture is constantly evolving, and architects need to stay current with new technologies, materials, and building methods to design and construct buildings that are energy-efficient, sustainable, and safe. He has received accreditation from the Portuguese Association of Architects, the ‘Tanaches Accreditation Program’ in the UAE, and the ‘American Institute of Architects AIA’ in the Middle East.

Dias has had a lifelong passion for design and architecture that began early on in his studies. He vividly remembers reading a book during his elementary studies that featured a sketch by Alvaro Siza, the Pritzker Prize-winning Portuguese architect, which had a profound impact on the way he viewed architecture and design.

Siza's attention to detail remains a source of inspiration for Dias to this day, and it is something he strives to incorporate into his work alongside his design principles, which welcome new architectural challenges as the field evolves in both theory and practice.

With advancements in technology and computation, Henrique strives to push the boundaries of his design thinking and conceptual workflow by incorporating approaches such as parametric design into the design and iteration process, prioritising building performance and sustainability. His ultimate goal is to create better spaces for humanity and the environment and to design timeless structures that stand the test of time without losing their identity.

Dias has been invited to speak at a number of conferences throughout the Middle East during his career. In Saudi Arabia, these events included the INDEX Design Talks, the 12th Edition Real Estate Development Summit in Riyadh, the Cityscape Global Summit in Dubai, and the Hospitality Network in Saudi Arabia. Dias has spoken about the integration of design and innovation with luxury, the state of real estate in the Middle East, hospitality design that incorporates wellness and health, and the future of the hospitality industry at these conferences. Dias has shared his insights and knowledge with audiences in the Middle East as a speaker and thought leader in the fields of design and real estate, helping to shape the direction of these industries in the region.

This project acts as a catalyst for further developments in the city. The architecture mirrors the spiritual journey of the pilgrims who just reached the Madinah Gate.\

\ Buruj Hotel, Baghdad, Iraq

On the most visible corner anchor of the prestigious Buruj development, fronting Baghdad Airport Road, rises a new gateway: Buruj Hotel. An homage to Baghdad’s storied position as the cradle of civilization, this flagship hotel’s iconic design is a poetic interpretation of Mesopotamian creation mythology. A powerful cascade symbolized by an 18-level tower, which spills down into gentle streams formed by rippled strata that flow all along the linear site.\

Adriana Graur is a key member of both the Dubai Studio and the global dwp team. Her goal since joining dwp has been to lead a team of creative designers in delivering quality design at the highest standards while maintaining a sustainable core. This has become more apparent in recent years as the team's growth has accelerated and the project portfolio has grown.

Graur leads design initiatives across international studios alongside the creative team of dwp Global Design Council on a mission to enhance design values and support designers in achieving their best. As part of that, she is very interested in and passionate about mentoring.

Another topic on Graur's agenda is sustainability - leading sustainability initiatives and making all projects sustainable on our global dwp mission of becoming net zero.

She excels in all aspects of her work, as a designer, a leader, a mentor, and, most importantly, in her ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and all stakeholders. Her ability to go above and beyond the client's expectations has been evident in all of her projects, both past and present. Her ability to lead the team to great success is supported by her involvement in all stages of design, fresh perspectives, excellent client relationship management, and consistent participation in regional roundtable discussions, articles, and competitions, to name a few.

A few of the projects encompassed on Graur's portfolio over the last year are the GFG Sydney Office (a 4-storey refurbishment), a continuation of the client's relationship developed based on GFG's Headquarters designed last year in Dubai; Allen & Overy office refurbishment in Abu Dhabi which is currently on-site; Executive Council Office refurbishment, Dubai Emirates Towers - set to finish by February 2023.

She continues to deliver amazing projects globally while leading a global team, as she recently did for one of the quickest turnarounds, 11 'Best of the Best' restaurants designed in partnership with TGP and ISG for the World Expo 2020 designed within a 6-week programme and across 4 studios; Australia, Singapore, Thailand, and Dubai. Adriana led, engaged, and maintained a collaborative and healthy relationship with the client while managing the team and delivering high-quality work with a team of over 30 designers involved in delivering the project.

Graur has consistently demonstrated her commitment to a better future and sustainable design and practises, and she has taken a leadership role within dwp to support this movement. She is constantly participating in industry discussions on this topic and writing white papers to support this.

McIntosh has over 20 years of design and construction experience, having worked in the US, Uk, Europe, China, and the Middle East. Since the beginning of his career, he has had the opportunity to collaborate with architectural legends such as Sir Peter Cook, his personal mentor from his years of study at Columbia University, on the conception and delivery of large, complex, high-profile buildings that are renowned as iconic architectural landmarks.

McIntosh is highly passionate about the intersections of technology, entertainment, urbanism, futurology, activation and architectural design and has lectured and written about these topics in different institutions and publications. He describes his approach to design as “Feel Crafting” – a vision that seeks to create detailed, crafted and unique solutions for each project, focusing on understanding the client’s vision and helping bring it to life.

dward McIntosh is the regional design director for the Middle East at Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group. His main role at Atkins is to bring clients’ visions to life by creating design concepts that integrate the region’s cultural heritage with sustainable urban design practices.At Atkins, McIntosh is leading a team of experienced and early career professionals in design and architecture to deliver some of the most transformational projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC region. He has presented competition proposals to top level stakeholders and high-profile clients with great success. He has thrived in complex stakeholder scenarios where decisiveness and fast response have allowed him to move the needle in high-profile projects

With over 19 years of experience in the profession, Islam El Mashtooly is a regionally and internationally recognised architect, urbanist, and educator. He is committed to design that supports and enhances communities, with a philosophy that emphasises harmony within context, as well as the climate, culture, and traditions of the MENA region. The success of small to large-scale developments across multiple typologies demonstrates his technical expertise and innovative design approach.

In 2021, Mashtooly's architectural concept for "JANNAT MASJID" won in the "Future Projects" category at the highly prestigious World Architecture Festival Awards. The project was chosen as the winner in a category with over 550 finalists dedicated to celebrating excellence. It was designed as a place of peace that exudes unity while also embracing inclusion and diversity. 2022 marked the fourth year Islam has won a category at the WAF, following Residential Building of the Year in 2016

and Baghdad design centre in 2018, making him one of the region's fastest-growing and most-celebrated Arab architects.

Mashtooly was a leader in creating OBMI's vertical resort concept, AERA, alongside the firm's teams worldwide, using his expertise in urban environments and willingness to push the boundaries in design. Rather than creating a horizontal experience, as is common in traditional resorts, this ambitious vertical concept creates a private island oasis in the middle of a city.

Mashtooly has retained his position in the top 50 Most Influential Architects in the Middle East for seven consecutive years. He has continually been nominated for regional and international architecture awards, winning the United International Architects Award in Baku for two years in a row.

Abha Mixed-Use Development is a one-of-a-kind retail and hospitality destination poised to provide a remarkable retail, lifestyle F&B, and hospitality experience for the capital city of Abha in Saudi Arabia's Aseer region. Red Sea Markets Co., a real estate development company, is creating a vision for a destination in Abha, Saudi Arabia's south west, with an area of 75,564m2. The land is in the Al Areen master plan, East of Abha, and faces King Fahad Road from the South.

This new cultural centre will feature a oneof-a-kind collection of celebrated courtyards, plazas, and terraces that connect to a yearround multi-use events space. It is envisioned as a modern lifestyle neighbourhood for exquisite urban shopping and entertainment, celebrating a new mixed-use district within a family-friendly development filled with dining, events, and memorable attractions.

Another amazing project he is working on is the Hijaz Mall in KSA. The goal of Al Hijaz was to create a new retail and hospitality destination for the community and the pilgrims connecting cultures from all around the world in a single experience. Sandra Woodall is a UK-qualified architect and urbanist who has lived in the Middle East for over 25 years, where she leads the award-winning MENA design studio for tangramGULF, a firm known for delivering diverse social infrastructure projects throughout the region with sustainability at the forefront.

Mirko Sala Tenna is a designer and architect who established Etereo Design studio in Dubai in 2017. He specialises in architecture, interior design, landscape design, product design, and yacht design. Etereo, a vibrant, artistically abundant Italian heritage dotted with influences from the Middle East and harmoniously brought together with passion, was born as a result of his astute understanding of architecture.

Ghaf Majlis, located in the desert and surrounded by the national UAE tree, the Ghaf tree, is one of his most successful projects. The client's main requirements were to design a representative and iconic building that could function as a gathering place and contrast with the desert. At the same time, it should respect and preserve the site's existing Ghaf trees. The team accepted the challenge of creating this desert icon with dynamic sharp edges and dark exterior micro topping that contrasts with the soft, beige desert sand, reflecting the client's style. The building's shape is inspired by the trees on the site.

The main majlis and mini majlis, main dining room and mini dining room, lobby, bathrooms, and a heavy kitchen comprise the building programme.

Our concept was heavily influenced by contrast. As a result, we used a dark cement micro-topping on all walls, making the building stand out in the desert while remaining simple. We used marble to add richness to the interior and wood to add warmth. The building's shape is determined by its functions and the surrounding environment. A cantilever is projected at the entrance to provide a bold strike, visual privacy for the mini dining, and enclosure around a Ghaf tree.

The project used drought-tolerant plants, automatic faucets to reduce water consumption, high UV-rated glass panels, and an overhang structure as external shading above windows to reduce temperature gain during hot summers.

"This project effectively represents the client. Our design added a modern touch to the Majlis and left a lasting impression on all of the client's guests," adds Mirko. Another project, Santuosa villa raises the standard of modern luxury. A rich material palette of marbles, bronze, and smoked oak combine with fine European furnishings and handcraftsmanship to create an environment that exudes old glamour with a touch of art deco influence. Every detail has been considered. This modern 6-bedroom villa is spread across a large 18,000sqft plot in Umm Al Sheif, close to the Burj Al Arab and Kite Beach in Jumeirah, a peaceful neighbourhood filled with cute cafes and restaurants.

The client's vision was realised in the form of interiors with a fresh and timeless colour palette and luxe material combinations. The stark contrast between the white marble on the floor and the warm and dark tones of the smoked oak helped to create a neutral backdrop that allowed the freedom to experiment with small pops of colour in the furnishings.

“25 different types of marble flow throughout the mansion forming a thread between the various living spaces," says Mirko.

Etereo, led by Mirko, is progressing and working on a variety of projects; the firm has also received numerous accolades and awards from leading design events.

Cem Kapancioglu spent seven years at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University studying architecture. In 2010, he established CK Architecture Interiors. Four years later, the company began to expand as a result of project wins for clients such as Anantara on the Palm and Burj Khalifa. Kapancioglu had previously gained valuable industry experience while working for Dubai-based consultancy Eronat Engineering.

He returned to Istanbul to work for design firms such as Kocaciklioglu Architects and Arketipodesign before returning to Dubai to work with Rixos Group on a project worth approximately US$500mn. He recently completed the Real Estate Economy and Finance programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science. The programme assisted him in gaining a thorough understanding of the estate industry from a macroeconomic perspective.

CK Architecture Interiors, based in Dubai, offers a bespoke design and build solutions for residential, commercial, and hospitality projects, and has worked on several prestigious projects, including Signature and Garden Villas at Palm Jumeirah, Penthouses at Bluewaters and Il Primo, Royal Villas, and an ultra-luxury car showroom along Sheikh Zayed Road. The company recently expanded its operations to Abu Dhabi by opening a new 2,000sqft showroom and experiential centre at the St. Regis Residences on Saadiyat Island. Driven by his Humanitarian vision, Bassel Omara is a multi-award-winning Egyptian architect, designer, and artist captivating many awards and honours regionally and globally. With over 15 years of extensive global experience, Omara has succeeded intensely on a wide variety of projects spanning from Egypt to UAE, KSA, Qatar, Oman, Iraq, Libya, France, Mali, Iceland and Germany. Omara has recently worked exclusively on developing a new masterplan vision for one of the UAE's major cities, in addition to several special and confidential projects that will have an impact on the region. Two of his major Emirati housing project designs with ADHA are nearing completion, totalling 306+204 villas and facilities. He is currently completing the design for eight prestigious mega projects in Saudi Arabia to enhance the commercial and hospitality sectors in the major cities. Rabih Geha founded the award-winning firm Rabih Geha Architects.

Geha received his B.A. in Architecture from the American University of Beirut and his master's degree from the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris.

Geha founded l'Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in 2006, where he mentors Lebanon's next generation of interior architects through experimentation and research.

He worked with Rudy Ricciotti in Marseilles and French architect Odile Decq in Paris before returning to Beirut.

Geha is well-known for his signature blend of unexpected and authentic spaces, and he is credited with redefining the nightlife experience in Beirut and Dubai with projects like Uberhaus, Off&On, B018 Dubai, and February 30 Dubai. He expanded his practice to the UAE in 2021, opening offices in the Dubai Design District to service his growing portfolio of GCC projects.

EDGE is a firm that specialises in architecture, masterplanning, interior design, and project management. Martin Baerschmidt is its managing director and founder. EDGE was founded in June 2009.

In the past year, EDGE served as the Lead Design Consultant (LDC) for the new 440-seat NOBU restaurant at Atlantis the Palm, as well as providing a leading developer with the Concept Design for a G+42 Tower in Business Bay. Currently, EDGE is working on two additional towers of a comparable height along the Dubai Water Canal for a February 2023 sales launch.

Alan George has established an exceptional track record of success over the previous ten years. Currently, he practices as a senior architect for Orange Design Group.

George, a speaker and guest lecturer, thinks it's critical to close the knowledge gap between academia and the practise of architecture. In Dubai, he serves as a jury member on a regular basis for various design schools.

AMMOS RELAUNCHED IN DECEMBER 2022, WHERE THE RESTAURANT RECENTLY UNDERWENT A COMPLETE RENOVATION OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS, WHERE NO STONE WAS LEFT UNTOUCHED.

Kasun Illankoon had the opportunity speak to Pavlos Tsochantaris – General Manager of AMMOS Greek Restaurant, about the newly improved set up and the importance of interior designs and how they give off an casual chic, Aegean coastal vibes, and how it offers nod to the rich history and culture of the Greek isles.

Tell us about the relaunch of AMMOS Greek Restaurant and how does it differ from before?

Over the summer months, AMMOS Greek Restaurant underwent a

complete renovation, leaving no stone unturned. The previously taverna-style (very casual) Greek restaurant has now been transformed into a casual chic restaurant with premium food offerings, in keeping with Sunset Hospitality Group's vision to upgrade its favourite Greek concept.

The new AMMOS Greek Restaurant is all about cool, Aegean coastal vibes. As the day progresses and the sun sets, the casual chic vibe gives way to an elegant yet hip atmosphere. It pays homage to the Greek islands' rich history and culture. Traditional whitewashed walls and polished stone floors coexist with

natural pared-back furnishings in the light-filled space. The end result is a stylish haven reminiscent of the most fashionable Grecian hotspots. Furthermore, the venue has been expanded to include more space on the stunning outdoor terrace, which boasts the best view of Ain Dubai.

When designing the interiors of AMMOS Greek Restaurant what factors were taken into account that would have an ideal impact on the customers?

Focus was on recreating the look and feel of Greek islands. Immense attention to detail was put into decoration, which is inspired by islands of the likes of Santorini and Mykonos with the aim of bringing originality and authenticity to the venue.

A light and airy space makes guests feel as if they are sitting in a restaurant miles away on a Greek island, where they can relax, escape the hustle and bustle of Dubai (a hideaway so to speak), and feel the sea breeze.

How does the lighting, kitchen, flooring, colours, reflect a Grecian chic vibe?

The Grecian chic vibe is portrayed through:

• Earthy tones

• Ceramic decorative elements

• Natural cane ceiling

• Ceiling hat lamps

• Busts deriving from Greek mythology

• Unique accent wall

• Bougainvillea trees decorating all pillars in the venue

• Light and airy space

• Outdoor as well as indoor seating with glass windows

The traditional whitewashed walls and polished stone floors coexist with natural pared-back furnishings in the light-filled space. As the day progresses and the sun sets, the casual chic vibe gives way to an elegant, yet decidedly hip atmosphere.

Floors were redone in traditional stone-paved style, numerous wooden and earthy elements were added, the ceiling was redone with rattan, a unique eye-catching wall was added that houses ceramics and other decorative elements.

Flowers play an essential role, especially bougainvillea in pink and white, which are very common in Greek islands and give guests the feeling they have been invited to garden party for a celebratory meal with friends and family.

AMMOS Greek Restaurant’s entrance resembles the entrance of houses in Santorini or Mykonos with its typically blue door and traditional Greek wall texture; entrance prepares you for a voyage to the Aegean sea.

Ornaments in the restaurant such as busts (traditional but with a

modern touch), ceramics and vases are used to showcase pieces of Greek history. Elements from Greek islands and the mainland are used in perfect balance.

In your opinion, what shapes a good ambiance?

Through warm and heartfelt service, Greek culture demands that guests in a restaurant always feel as if they are in one's own home. At AMMOS Greek Restaurant, this is extremely important to us and is taken very seriously. Perhaps it is more of a mentality, rather than a responsibility – something deep ingrained in Greek culture. It is done by choice, not by force.

The menu at AMMOS takes the very best of Greek cuisine, charm and hospitality, fusing authenticity and tradition. How to go beyond standard seating?

How does the type of furniture you display, provide the customer a perfect dining experience?

The spacious lounge dining area, chic sofa seating, stunning outdoor terrace, great views overlooking Azure Beach and Ain Dubai, and an inviting ambiance complete with blue and while details all contribute to a perfect dining experience. Aside from the furniture, the restaurant truly comes alive at night with live entertainment on Fridays, when DJs spin the hottest beats, encouraging guests to get involved and embrace the fun.

Tell us the balance between design and food. Excellent ingredients meet picture-perfect food presentation at AMMOS Greek Restaurant. The restaurant is balanced by chic Grecian interiors and authentic flavours, presented in a fresh new way, yet staying true to classics.

Sunset Hospitality’s goal and vision is always food quality and authenticity of the menu identity throughout all of the company’s F&B concepts.

Tell us about the menu and what stands out?

The main things that stand out at AMMOS Greek Restaurant are fresh fish sourced from Greek islands

simple cooking that is not overly spiced).

Two dishes that stand out are Lobster Pasta which evokes the feeling of summer in Greece,

and Greek ingredients like olive oil from Sparta and Feta cheese – a Grecian staple.

The inspiration behind AMMOS Greek Restaurant’s menu is to introduce guests to original Greek cuisine (which means fresh quality ingredients and

as lobster can be caught easily in warmer months and, Souvlaki (perhaps the most famous Greek dish today, which comes with charcoal grilled pita bread, meat, hand-cut fries and a generous amount of tzatziki and vegetables. Souvlaki is a favourite among Greeks.

Tell us about the location, why is Rixos JBR an ideal experience for your customers?

JBR is popular, well-visited and a multinational area in Dubai, situated right next to the beach.

AMMOS Greek Restaurant is located at the popular Rixos Premium Dubai JBR which has an excellent reputation for being a haven for foodies in Dubai.

Moreover, besides valet parking, being next to Azure Beach, Sunset Hospitality’s beach club and winner of numerous awards over the years, has been a win for our customers too.

Herman Miller announced the winner of the Work Redefined, The Design Challenge, and Design Middle East was invited to a candid conversation with the winning team and judge.

After receiving numerous impressive and curated entries, Herman Miller, a member of MillerKnoll’s collective of brands, has announced the winners of this year’s Work Redefined –Design Challenge.

The winner of the 2023 challenge was The Wellness Suite, designed by RSP. They envisioned a space that’s highly flexible and collaborative; one where wellness and connection are right at the heart of the office. “We approached the challenge by putting ourselves in this office. How would we want the office of the future to look in our eyes, and in our experience as well?” said the team at RSP.

This year’s Work Redefined – Design Challenge was hosted in Africa and the Middle East, welcoming in a new group of leading design firms to create their vision for the workplace of the future. Participating studios and workgroups were tasked with designing a 500- to 750sqm workspace for 50 to 100 people, incorporating pieces from MillerKnoll’s collective of brands, including the wide suite of offerings from Herman Miller. The results were unique, inspiring and forwardthinking.

On the shortlist were I R Design, Design Smith, Bluehaus Group, Eight Inc. and Swish Design Studio.

The Wellness Suite, designed by RSP, was the winner of the 2023 challenge. They envisioned a space that is highly flexible and collaborative, with wellness and connection at the forefront.

An interview with the RSP team that won the design competition.

How would you describe this competition and your strategy for victory?

The competition was eye opening and inspiring for us. Our overall research and ideas have revolved around our own experiences and human interactions in the workplace. Our research was based on experimenting and brainstorming out of the box ideas that can be implemented within the workplace, and this is how we came up with the wellness worksuite concept. We believe the concept of merging hospitality with wellness, and creating a human centric balanced workplace is the future of workplace.

How do you see Herman Miller as a workspace innovation leader?

As one of the world’s leading furniture brands, whose core values place great importance on the environment, community

and health and wellbeing of its end users.

MillerKnoll’s extensive and dynamic range of furniture pieces is what makes the brand innovative in the field. Their extensive research, which has really helped us through the design process for the competition, encompasses all aspects of the human experience to ensure they cover human's needs on a wholistic level.

Explain your winning design?

The Wellness Work Suite, where wellness becomes the foundation and core value of the workplace. Our design is a place which caters for all working styles, encourages a sense of community, places the employee’s wellbeing at the forefront and is a place where technology is seamless. We strongly believe that those components lay the foundations to optimize an employees' wellbeing which in turn encourages maximum productivity and work out put, supporting the company's ultimate vision. When we first started the design process, we thought about how we can further enhance the idea of working from home? this gave us a clue that the workspace required something more to entice users to come back to the office, and the next level of relaxation from home is none other than wellness & hospitality which gave birth to the wellness worksuite concept.

What does this win mean to you?

This win is exciting for us and it’s a living proof that many companies are thinking forward and working to finding solutions to create the ultimate working experiences and the idea of putting the employee’s wellbeing at the forefront. As designers we always want to see our designs impact the world in a positive way, especially after the pandemic where there has been a great shift in the working model. Re-imagining workspace through the lens of hospitality with a core focus on service, comfort and convenience, companies can create vibrant destinations that engage and inspire their employees.

What are your plans now?

RSP is looking forward to taking on the experiences and findings to our own offices as well as our current and future design projects to enhance the overall work scene. This is the start of re-looking at our current approaches in the workplace, as the world is evolving our work habits and scenes should always be adapting to those evolvements. >>>

How would you describe your approach to this design competition?

As a judge in this year’s competition, it is, of course, our task to verify that all the boxes are ticked; to make a fair comparison. Second, I’ve witnessed a shift in how people and the organisations they work for have developed better boundaries between work and life in order to encourage deeper, more meaningful engagement with both, which is a very interesting juxtaposition to the past and a characteristic of the future of work, I believe. We often focus on productivity when talking about the work environment, and we have created “Human doings” who believe that they must “do” things to be valued in our society and to value themselves. The future of the workplace will evolve around “Human beings” who believe that their self-worth is defined by their values, attitudes, and beliefs. They will seek a workspace that embodies that. In this competition, I’ve focused on this phenomenon in particular, especially since it’s called Work Re-Defined. Participants had the unique opportunity to re-think existing systems, relationships and connections to space, time and each other.

How is Herman Miller paving the way for innovation and attracting talent in the workspace industry?

I've been drawn to Herman Miller's impressive research since my first introduction to the brand during my early design studies. It is no secret

that there is a strong positive relationship between collaboration and innovation, and Herman Miller is well aware of this. Without application, knowledge is just knowledge. Sharing and applying that knowledge is wisdom. . This is precisely why talent in the workspace industry is drawn to the brand.

What qualities are you most looking forward to in the winner?

From a winner, I expect to see work that sparks dialogue and ideas on how we can set the scene for people to work at their best. I would love to see a complete re-invention of the workspace tying in with what they identify as values of the future.

Are you happy with the response and entries you received or this competition?

Absolutely! It is great to see a significant number of motivated designers step out of their comfort zones, stretching their imaginations and expanding the realm from what they usually do.

How would this competition benefit the winner in terms of knowledge, career growth, and international positioning?

Firstly, access to knowledge and the Herman Miller research is an excellent advantage to any professional in the field. If you know better, you do better! Loosely taken from Maya Angelou. For any designer, budding or established, it is great to leverage a brand like Herman Miller and to be recognised by them. I believe it is often underestimated how opportunities like Work Re-Defined can significantly fast-track one’s career. Showcasing the courage to take on challenges as these are not only a great learning experience but it can also give you the upper hand over peers with a similar degree or work experience, especially in a highly competitive environment like the Middle East. Not to mention that it shows great ambition, perseverance and bravery on your CV, and these are the much sought-after so-called soft skills.

How would this competition further strengthen Herman Miller's position in the design industry and the community?

Design is really an act of communication, which means having a deep understanding of the people with whom designers and brands are communicating. Everything around us has been designed in some way, and all design ultimately produces an emotion. We experience an emotional reaction to our environment moment-by-moment: a like or a dislike, elation, joy, frustration. We ‘feel’ it. It’s personal. On a community level: by establishing this emotional connection through the brand, Herman Miller fosters loyalty and creates long-lasting relationships. Recognising the local talent pool is paramount in this. From a numbers perspective, emotions are the driving force behind most buying decisions. Brands that understand this well will thrive.

Lodes has renewed its collaboration with Norwegian architecture and design studio Snhetta to expand the Volum collection. Following the introduction of the Volum pendant lamp last year, the collection has been revisited to include new ceiling, wall, and table lamps, as well as a series of glass lamps that are poetically simple yet complex in their technically driven solution.

Volum pays homage to the Italian tradition of globe-shaped glass lamps as well as the larger glassblowing process, which morphs glass into naturally imperfect shapes. At the same time, it exemplifies the Oslo-based designers' modern architectural sensibilities.
