The Script Magazine Issue#1

Page 1

Hello everybody, my name is Nicole, I’m a multimedia designer and my most favourite band ever is The Script. Why? They make me believe in my dreams and I’m very proud to finally bring this magazine I made for them. The Script have the best fans on the world and they are full of creative ideas. Scriptettes are not like any other fans, they are honest, nice and they support each other. I wouldn’t be able to create this magazine if I didn’t have a huge support. Thank you very much for this.

Carla Silva (writer) is 33 years old, born in Portugal and currently living in the Azorean Islands. Currently working at The Lince Great Hotel Golf & Spa, since 5 years ago. Fan of The Script for 4 years now, since the release of the first single and album. Besides The Script, is a fan of Mariah Carey, Fallen Drakes, Sting and Richard Marx. On the spare times loves to write, to watch movies, to cook and to drink tones of tea (this is one of the benefits of living close to a tea plantation and factory). Dreamer but also a person with a lot of faith in the future, which she considers an open book.

I’d also like to thank The Script for giving me the chance to do something that I love and share it with the world. You give me love, hope and inspiration with your music and I’m giving you this magazine as my “thank you”. I was making this magazine for some time now and I went through many versions, designs and concepts. After all that thinking and making, I came up with this one. I hope you really like it and be sure that Issue#2 will be even better. My special thanks goes to The Dedication, a great new band from New York, and to Carla Silva who helped me make this magazine with her amazing determination and writing skills. We worked great as a team and we are proud to show you what we’ve made. Nicole Venglovicova

what happened in July? Over 30 years ago, Glen Joseph Power was born in Dublin.

2008 Besides amazing performances in several festivals like the iTunes Festival at Koko in London (11th) or T in the Park (12th), this month sees the amazing success of the band’s second single “The Man Who can’t Be Moved”. The single is released on the 25th and two days later enters the UK Singles Chart at number 2. This song is heavily used on the TV series Ghost Whisperer (Season 4) and is also a part of the soundtrack to the Victoria Secret’s Runaway Show in 2009. The guys also feature in other hit shows like 90210.

7

2009 On the 10th, the band has a stellar performance at Oxegen. This performance will, in 2010, win them The Meteor Ireland Music Award for Best Live Performance, beating their mentors U2.

Two days later (12th) they return to T in the Park.

Later this month (17th, 18th and 21st) they would open for Sir Paul McCartney (former Beatle) in New York.

On the 27th, the band had an amazing performance as an opening act for none other than U2, their childhood idols. They opened their show at Croke Park.

8

2010 After many months in the studio, on July 19th, The Script announce on their official site the name of their forthcoming album “Science & Faith” and the name of the first single “For The First Time” to be released later that year.

2011 On the 2nd, The Script performed, what would be their first full stadium gig show. Homecoming at Aviva in Dublin was attended by 50,000 people and the awesomeness of the show was later turned into a DVD.

Contrary to reports, posted online on July 5th, none of The Script’s members commited suicide because of the awesome show at Aviva.

9

After a series of festivals - Oxegen on the 8th - T in the Park – 9th - Thetford Forest – 14th - Gurten Festival – 16th their Science & Faith European Tour ends in Brighton on the 17th.

2012 The release of The Script online magazine Issue#1.

July has been a month of good memories for The Script; meeting and performing with childhood idols, being a part of the most important Summer Festivals in Europe. Only God knows what’s still to come. Author: Carla Silva

We all know what this song is about and how great it sounds. A pure heart-breaker has over 38 million views on Youtube and has stolen even more hearts. Beautiful story obout a young man who fell in love and doesn’t want to move on. The lyrics tells a heartbreaking story and the video makes it even more emotional. Everytime I watch it, I feel like I’m actually watching a real movie starring with Danny O’Donoghue. No matter if you realise camera movements, cuts and order of the scenes, the synchronisation of the video and lyrics creates one consistent story. Let’s uncover some of those elements. Play the video and the first thing you see is Danny’s shadow on the pavement. He’s walking on the street and he’s constantly moving. He’s going to that corner where he met his love for the first time. All the people on the street are very busy and they’re

11

ignoring him.

behind the scenes

We can see a part of the cardboard with the lyrics on it. We don’t have to see the whole picture to realise what it says. Video-makers wanted us to look for signs and constantly think about the lyrics. You can’t listen to this song without realizing how amazing is the story. When I heard it for the first time, I was absolutely blown away.

started noticing him and they wonder what he’s doing there. He’s trying to explain it with the

lyrics but they still seem very confused.

These days people don’t realize the power of love. When a young man feels true love and he’s willing to sacrifice anything for it, he can actually get famous because what he’s doing is totally extraordinary. My most favourite part of the whole video is the camera movement from 2:13 when Danny sings “I’m not moving” and the camera is moving around him. This is a simple take but tells

a lot. He’s standing still on the busy street and we can see that everything around him is moving. The whole world won’t stop just because a guy has a broken heart. The same message is transmited at the end of the video when everything is moving very fast. We can see a lot of takes from different enviroment, busy streets, traffic, nature, winter, summer, rain, sun, snow etc. Anything that shows that the time is moving. We can hear the strings from the song and it has

the same rythm as the pictures we see. Video ends with Danny sitting in the corner although we’ve seen how much time has already passed. But he will sit in that corner no matter what because he’s the man who can’t be moved. This song is exactly what was missing in the music industry for a very long time. I can listen to it thousand times and it still has its magic. Author: Nicole Venglovicova

IND We’ll take a look at how the

lads were enjoying filming this video.

“I mean, it’s pretty crazy sitting here doing this right now, but absolutely amazing as well. We’re lucky guys.”

“If you’re gonna be embarrassed by standing on the street singing, there’s no point in being in this you know.. game.”

“I’m also dealing with everyday life. People are asking me Excuse me, do you know where this is? And I’m like Sorry, I’m actually shooting a video right now. I guess they didn’t notice a big camera and the rest of the crew following me.”

“We’re shooting here in Los Angeles and it’s actually a night time believe or not. All over here it’s made look like a day time cuz we brought series of lights on the street blushing up on the windows.” 13

Songwritting…. quoting The Script A lot has been said about The Script, but one thing that defines them is their songs. If we see things carefully, they write all of their material and still do it for other artists – like Kris Allen or Leona Lewis – and their skills are remarkable.

But what does it take to write a

song? At first, it looks like a song is just a poem, a melody, mixed with some instruments and someone sings and it’s done. For The Script, songwriting is much more than putting words on a paper or knowing how to read a scale (for instance, Danny never learned how to read music). Their first rule is to find a good story from which the song can blossom. This may come from “a normal, real conversation, getting drunk with a friend at a pub”, so Mark says. This way you capture the honesty in the song because you’re singing about real life events. After the original idea is set, you can pens down the lyrics on your own or you can ask your friends to help you – I believe, in a group is so

15

much fun!! But to write a song about someone else’s problems is not easy if you’re not a good listener and interpreter of people. When we tell another person’s tale, we must be able to learn that person’s words so, when you hear it “it needs to be coming from the same spot” – only with this Honesty, the crowd can feel they are apart of the song and identify with it. Writing about real live events, prevents the use of formulas that, at some point, will fail and then you’ll have nothing to say. Choosing real life stories, your probabilities of success will increase, since you’ll have more chances of getting the audience to hear you, since many of them can say “I’m not alone!”

This honesty can be found trough

out The Script’s both records. For instance:

“We Cry” – about the struggles of all Dublineers, specifically the ones on St James Street, where you can find drug users and drug pushers

“Now he’s lighting up the wrong way something for the pain “ “The End Where I Begin” – one of the most honest songs they ever wrote about loss and coming to terms with it

“Sometimes Tears say all there is to say” (…) “Sometimes we’ve no choice but to walk away” (…)

For The First Time – a song about the struggle of Irish people because of the financial crisis

“She needs me now but I can’t seem to find the time Gotta a new job now on the unemployment line”

For Danny, the album Science & Faith sums up how many of their fans are feeling at the moment. The honesty in the lyrics come through the live performances and when the audience connects, the concert becomes a sing along – if you ever been to The Script’s concert, you know how true these words are when the crowd sings along The Man Who can’t Be moved or Break Even.

This being said, songwriting mustn’t be considered a business for the artist, it has to be a therapy for him and others around him cause someone else’s story can easily reflect your own life and vice – versa.

Although many of The Script’s songs are about heartbreak, they always finish with a positive note – with Hope. One of the best examples of that is the end of “For The First Time” - a brighter day will come!!

“Oh these times are hard Yeah they’re making us crazy But don’t give up on me baby” 16

Because of these honest but

hopeful songs, the awesome trio gets so may praises from fans saying their songs has helped them along the difficult life they had. For Danny “that’s the best way to thank a songwriter “. When you go to The Script’s concert, you leave imagining you were right there on stage with them because they explain the truth behind the song so simply that you become part of the story. It doesn’t matter if the song was written in a big studio or in a shack in St James

St, ” what matters is the feeling it brings you after hearing it and what it says about you as a person “.

To finish, I would like to quote The Aviva from The Aviva Book:

“The Script is not about us, it’s all about inspiration and how can we try and achieve more in our lives and turn bad things into good things. It’s about getting knocked down and getting back up again.” As a fan, The Script are all about being real and honest with themselves, no matter what is thrown their way and this side of their personalities translates into the whole group and then, to their music.

For the first time is a song

that touches my heart, it’s meant a lot from the very start, from the moment my dad died, from the moment it helped me survive. The man who can’t be moved has helped me a lot I must say like I could conquer the world someday. It’s not just the song that gets me by, it’s the way you look with your loving eyes. When smiling but I’m close to tears, Danny, Glen, Mark and Ben I know your’ll be here, you will always be a part of me from the very start til the end is near. I don’t know what else to say, I love you all, don’t ever change !! xox

D ESIGN - making of the facebook cover Time spent: 3 hours Properties: 850px wide and 315px high, 300dpi, saved as a JPEG, made in Adobe Photoshop

The biggest inspiration for making a Facebook timeline cover is the picture itself. I never start thinking about making the cover without knowing what picture I’m going to use. First I try to find something that inspires me. I search the net, fan pages and look for that spark in my eyes.

1.

Choosing the right picture

In this particular cover I didn’t really have to search because I love the video for Science and Faith, so I just thought it would be a good idea to make a cover out of this, in my opinion, eye catching and technically amazing video.

31

I played the video and searched for good shots of guys with a white background – that’s always great for further editing. I stopped the video in the right moment and took a picture with Print Screen + FN (Command+Shift+3 on Mac). Then I cut the picture to the size I wanted which was showing the guys as clear as possible. I opened Photoshop and put these pictures

next to each other and make them fit into the frame. I usually put a logo in the upper left corner because that is the first place where the user looks at but because of Mark’s white space on the right, I put it there. I could flip the picture horizontally but I wanted to keep it in the same position as it is in the video.

2.

effects

In this order, Glen and Mark are both facing Danny who’s singing into the ‘skies’. I didn’t think it would look good if each one of them was

3.

FINISHing THE IDEA

Usually, I don’t like adding this kind of effect because it might completely destroy the message and the whole look might turn into

looking in a direction that leads our eyes out of the picture. I didn’t like the fact that Danny’s hand is cut but I liked this shot and I wanted to use it. Anyways this picture is full of these shots and the law of closure gives it identity.

fit together. Then I put a logo in the upper right corner and the last thing I did was to add Plastic Wrap effect to it (in CS5 it’s Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap).

I played with a contrast to make the white background in every picture

enemy of my eyes (if you use more effects at the same time) but it was different in this case. Science and Faith music video is full of effects, movement and that is actually the whole idea behind it. And the Facebook cover should express the same thing. Without Plastic Wrap effect it looked a bit dry and steady.

I wanted to add more scientific look to it, well it was inspired by Science and Faith in the end, wasn’t it?
