Journal Activity

Spend a few minutes reflecting on your role as a manager. Use the following questions as prompts to help guide your thinking: What additional responsibilities do you have a as a manager? What specific things do you do to encourage your employees? How do you stay engaged with your employees? Are there things you currently do to prevent sexual harassment? If so, what are they?

02 Z

Manager Responsibilities Discussion

You observe two co-workers having a conversation in the breakroom. One employee, Jay, is making small talk with Sara. You notice that Jay touches Sara multiple times on the shoulder, lower back, and arm, in the course of the conversation. You overhear Sara saying “please stop” and Jay saying “looking sexy in that skirt”. You aren’t sure how to respond or address the issue, but seem to recall that Jay had made similar comments to a member of your team.”

03

Manager Responsibilities Discussion

What are some things you are doing to help encourage an environment that does not tolerate sexual harassment?

Do you know your company’s policy on sexual harassment? Do you know where to find it? Do your employees?

How could you partner with HR or other organizational groups to increase knowledge, awareness, and prevention of sexual harassment.

04

Quick Check Scenarios

Is the manager responsible for the sexual harassment claim? 1

An employee reports to you that they have been sexually harassed. You make a documented report to HR and upper management, but 3 months later, nothing has been done and the behaviors have continued to occur. YES or NO

2

A vendor supplier regularly makes lewd and suggestive comments to one of your employees. You work in the same area as this employee, and often overhear the comments. You do not make a report because to your knowledge the employee has not said anything about it. After occurring for 3 months, the employee makes a report, saying that the supervisor knew about the behaviors. YES or NO

3

You regularly give employees hugs when you see them or when they make big accomplishments. You see it as a way to reward employees and make them feel valued. One employee has asked you on multiple occasions not to give hugs, but you know that your hugs are strictly platonic, and your overall philosophy is that hugs build a strong team, and so you do not stop. YES or NO

05

Report Intake Role Play

Scenario: A co-worker has made sexual comments to you through your personal Facebook account during business hours. The co-worker has asked for dates through private message, and made comments about the clothes you’re wearing on a particular workday, including the comment “Those pants are making my imagination go wild.” Additionally, this co-worker has begun sending you memes with sexually suggestive images and accompanying phrases. You have had enough, and decide to address the behaviors with your supervisor.

06

Role Play Debrief
