HUBLI PAINLESS LABOR “The world doesn’t want to hear about the labor pains, they just want to see the baby.” Labor pain has been described by most as the most painful experience a woman can have in her lifetime. Question of Painless or Painful labor was raised only about one and half century back with the advent of Anesthesia in medical sciences. For the first time in 1846, James Young Simpson anaesthetized Queen Victoria with ether for childbirth. Like the earlier times when British clergymen argued that painless labor is a sin against the will of God who has made the childbirth painful; In the modern age of scientific and technological excellence many natural phenomenon are modified in such a way that it becomes beneficial for human lives. There are so many examples; a dam is build to produce electricity; Artificial and parenteral foods are often given to the patients to save their lives. When the question of motherhood arises the term misery comes along with. But why it does not come with fatherhood? Fatherhood consists only of pleasure and mothers have only to sacrifice and has to forget their sufferings for the sake of motherhood even if you have safe alternatives? METHODS: There are many options for painless labor but epidural analgesia is most preferred method. Epidural analgesia and anesthesia- It is the most effective, most safe for both mother and baby and so, most widely used in western country, available since 1960s. A fine catheter (tube) is introduced in the epidural space through which the anesthetic drug is administered for pain relief. Here only the pain sensation of abdomen and lower limb goes away. The patient is fully conscious, can move her legs and all other sensations are present.
