And this is just the beginning. Five years is how long it takes to train a designer. Here at the school, we only join the first stage of the designer’s long professional journey; a first stage where each designer acquires professional strength, individual aesthetics, empathy, and the ambition to challenge the familiar and the recognised rules. Each designer now holds a professional and personal baggage containing sensory perception and knowledge, experiment and application, research and art, individual effort and group performance. In short: They hold the strength to move the world. Please welcome them. The first stage of the journey ends festively with a graduation, an exhibition, and a Master of Design degree. Of course, not every day of the past five years has been joyful. This is the way it must be when we want to support as well as challenge the talents of each of our students. It begins with the selection process. The students are our main resource; without them there will be no school, so we select them with care. We look for something we haven’t seen before. We look for the germ of surprise. They must possess potential and talent for using their minds as well as their hands; and they must be enthusiastic about design.
They must have determination, attitude, and a curious mind. They must be innovative and have the courage to move themselves and the world; and they must have professional and human talent. Our task as a school is to challenge and develop the natural resource in each of them. We don’t provide the answer – we find it together. This can be trying at times with ups and downs throughout the five years. Still, when I look at the endresult, it has been well worth it; and more: I’m excited! On behalf of Kolding School of Design, I congratulate Class of 2012 and all of you who will benefit from “our” talen ted, wild, committed, funny, strategically thinking – and so much more – designers. The Department of Communication Design focuses on broad grounding in the design discipline as well as specific professional specialisations within the fields of graphic design, illustration and interaction design. There is a firm belief in the power of storytelling and the magic to be found in everyday life, and we transform these into analogue, digital, sensory and spatial experiences where functionality and aesthetics merge in the most exquisite manner. We create beautiful experiences and intelligent interaction. Our designers create the communication of the future applying letters, images, drawings, video, animation, sounds, codes, shapes, objects, space, processes, and action. Communication designers design communication between and for people in local as well as global contexts. This makes social, ethical, moral, and human aspects an integral part of the education at the department.

Graphic design creates the required contexts, and tells the good story in such a way that it will be noticed, absorbed and remembered. Material as well as immaterial contacts between the user and the communicator are designed, and development, planning and production of communication are approached from a theoretical practical angle. The output includes publications, identity design, typography, layout, branding, film, animation, and script design.

Experience
I would describe myself as a curious, open and helpful person. I always take clients and myself very seriously, even though my approach to projects is often a bit naive and humorous. I strive to get away from the computer from time to time, and I love to work in the field between 2D and 3D. I believe that my work benefits from the tactile universe of hands-on prototyping. I like to let projects be research-driven and am more occupied by overall concepts and ideas as the starting point rather than technology and whether the project is intended for print, animation, web, etc. I believe that incubation and intuition hold a great, almost indescribable value in design. I can engage myself in varied projects, and I believe that how you do it is more important than what you do. My master’s is made in collaboration with interaction designer Christian Duus,(page 34). ‘The Meaning of a life project’ is a research driven project with the focus to understand values and life choices. We have worked with people in peculiar situations, and we have challenged traditional design research. The outcome of the project is communicated in a way that will lead people to reflect and evaluate on their life.

Experience
As a communication designer my most important task is to ask questions and influence people and their views. In order to push the boundaries of your field, it is important to be inquisitive, curious and critical towards it and the world around you. I find inspiration and challenge in everyday life and different ways of using communication and products, for instance in public space where people interact with the city and each other. The research phase of my projects is important to me as it gives my concepts and products an edge that translates to the end product. My main fields of interest are development of concepts, corporate identity, exhibition design, signage, book design, and interaction design. Dennis Design Center, by the art group Bureau Detours, showcases how design, craftsmanship and urban studies transform into useable designs inspired by local demand and site specific issues. My Master’s project is a guide that communicates how Dennis Design Center is built, how it functions, and what it leaves behind.

To me a modern designer is a “Jack-of-all-trades” that works in the in-betweens of established disciplines. I strive to combine graphic design, illustration, art, interaction design, concept development and an anthropologic research approach in my work as a graphic designer. I am intrigued by modern day culture and Zeitgeist. I find that new cultural patterns, technologies, isms and fashions always point back to our historical and cultural background; nothing new should be seen as an isolated event but as a part of an ever-changing organic movement. I seek to engage with the visual, historical, and cultural material in each of my projects capturing and portraying the unique qualities of each project, whether it be an icecream wrapper or a complete rebrand of a fashion company. The book “In Any Given Form” is a portrait of a tantalising aspect of online anonymity. My Master’s project utilises anonymity in order to make people describe and share their innermost thoughts and memories.

I mainly work with motion graphics and digital media doing anything from music videos to 2D and simple 3D animation in typography to info-graphics and character animation. My work involves graphic modes of expression, layout and kinetic typography and my primary tools are Illustrator, Photoshop and especially After Effects for video and animation. At my regular job I work closely with illustrators. I also work freelance as an art director and motion graphic artist. This involves 2D animation, sketching animation storyboards, style frames and implementing printed matters into digital versions as well as concepts and campaigns. Together with my present employer I have developed a digital campaign for the 50th anniversary of James Bond. I have created a mobile app which allows the target audience to interact with and become absorbed in the world of James Bond.

I am a multidisciplinary designer and I work in various creative areas such as art direction, graphic design, illustration, photography, animation and motion design doing both personal and commissioned works. I usually start with an idea and then go on to work on the concept and realisation all the way to the final touches. I like to break down the conventional client-supplier confines in order to explore the process as a shared experience as I find that together we can gain from each other’s strengths and achieve amazing results. I strive to create visual spheres that tear down imaginary walls and remain as special moments to be remembered. My Master’s project explores the relationship between sound and image in music videos. I hope to dissolve the existing distinction between sound and image, and in the end formulate a model where the audio and the visual operate on an equal level.

I have conducted most of my work under the name Lodret, a communication design duo consisting of Sophie Haack and myself. We have done, among other things, communication design and concept work for several Bureau Detours projects and conceptual graphic design for the exhibition Questioning Print. We have also created the Norbergfestival logo and a visual identity for the CSM BA Product Design Exhibition 2011. Lately, I have devoted more time to my own artistic practice as is evident in my Master’s project. For the project I chose a concept that had intrigued me for a while, randomness, and researched it from the metalayer and down. On the basis of this I conducted a series of experiments to explore randomness and improve my understanding of the concept. Lastly, I presented the most important studies, framed in a gallery setting. The final project itself is a framing and an exhibition of my process of working with the concept of randomness.

I enjoy working on graphic design projects that involve a good story. The projects can vary from serious projects, concerning serious and perhaps tabooed subjects, to fun, crazy and abstract projects. I am a big fan of simplicity, but my work also represents a wild artistic side. I prefer to work with strong colours to enhance a text, a statement, or a visual image. I like to play with composition and contrast between text and image. I am particularly inspired by geometrical forms and by transforming forms into text. When working with text alone, I like to focus on text that has a strong message and choose a strong typography. I also like working with the linguistic aspects of a text in order to make the message of the project stand out. I enjoy the element of surprise and working in ways that might not be typical.

I mainly work with branding, campaigns, visual identity, layout, and font design. I use both print and digital solutions. My strengths lie between concept and execution, idea and relevance. That is why my solutions are essential, realistic and at the same time innovative. The concept always comes first, and it is necessary to have a good knowledge of the client, task, and audience. I develop the concept using methods that range from structured and computer-based to being more expressive and analogue. I strive to always challenge myself, be thorough and attentive to detail, while I retain the overview. My Master’s project is about branding the Association Retro. Retro is a socioeconomic enterprise that aims to innovate volunteer culture in Denmark while making a difference among the world’s poorest. Solely by volunteerism the association runs two cafés. The purpose of the branding is to focus on a dynamic identity that allows the association to apply it to future projects and the more humanitarian parts of the association. At the same time it should be possible for the volunteers to use the branding in their daily tasks.

My passion is designing for people. The projects I have been most proud of are the ones that challenge our habits and make us think and act differently. I always strive to identify myself with the user because user-driven innovation for me is the key to creating relevant design. My main fields of interest are social innovation, service design and user-driven research. I find great inspiration in politics and nature and I believe that truly innovative, intelligent and sustainable design must be adaptable with our society and our eco-system. I do not believe in designing without regularly consulting the real world. I believe that good design can make the world a better place, but in order to make it happen, we must keep hold of our naivety and curiosity and never stop exploring. To do so is my biggest ambition.

I am a nice guy with a great interest in people and the world. I am good at research and thrive with fieldwork as well as with the processing of information. Generating ideas is a strong side of mine, and I am able to grasp both the complexities and the details. I love telling stories, both through design, film and by interacting with other people. I care more for people and thought-through concepts than technology. I work comfortably with various media, but I especially enjoy working with video. My Master’s project, is made in collaboration with graphic designer Simon Andersen (page 12). ‘The Meaning of a life project’ is a research driven project with the focus to understand values and life choices. We have worked with people in peculiar situations, and we have challenged traditional design research. The outcome of the project is communicated in a way that will lead people to reflect and evaluate on their life.

My work is conceptual and interdisciplinary within the fields of cinematic, interaction, fashion, and visual art. I specialise in unifying body and experience and I work by instinct, exploration and examination. Being a service designer makes me an explorer of the world. Always interested in learning more about other cultures and new ways of understanding society, my great curiosity has been a natural motivation for working with interactions between people. With a passion for trying to improve the lives of others, I like to include the users in the process, making the concepts relevant and relatable for the people involved. The goal of my projects is to extract the essence of a given situation, identify the points of opportunity, turn them into a tangible concept, and pass on the insights to others. To me, integrity, better relations, and design for happiness are key ingredients of good service design. By facilitating user-friendly systems for sharing, my Master’s project will nudge neighbours to use each other and at the same time encourage social networks. These networks can have a big impact on our experience of happiness and can be a vital factor in designing city life for the future.

I make animation and short films. They can be cheeky animations or mash ups for kids. Or they can involve complex, stigmatised, grown-up dilemmas, like the addiction to child pornography or whether the use of torture is acceptable in order to protect a society. The projects are based on a huge amount of research. I put all the small pieces together and add storytelling and aesthetics in an effort to create a new and deeper understanding of the subject. My Master’s project is a short film entitled ‘The State of Exception’. It is a film about the fear of terror and how this fear has changed our view on torture. When a society is under attack by a strange and unpredictable enemy, it is put in a state of fear, a state of exception. During this state, normal rules no longer apply; the exception dictates its own.

As an interaction designer I like to combine skills from many fields as I believe building knowledge together encourages empathy with our environments and creates better products, services and solutions. As designers we have a big social responsibility to positively influence our futures. My Master’s project, “PifPaf”, is a system that teaches 12 year-olds programming by engaging their brains in analytical, disciplined and abstract processes. As this kind of thinking is very difficult to grasp for teenagers, the system combines coding concepts with rich animated metaphors and storytelling in space. Through this physical play with cards, bodystorming and film prototyping, learning to code becomes learning to do magic – a difficult but extremely exciting task.

My primary interest is the inclusion of design thinking in public administration. Design can improve services and processes and create human-centered and aesthetic solutions. My Master’s project focuses on integrating design thinking in the process of evaluation. It studies a broad spectre of design research methods, visualisation tools, and aesthetic ways of communicating. It also investigates the fields of both design and evaluation. By experimenting with design-evaluation probes I have gained knowledge of how visual methods can bring new elements to the data collection in the evaluation process. In addition, design tools have shown their ability to support the inclusion of participants in a prospective and visual process thereby making evaluation a catalyst for user-involved development. Based on this research, my Master’s project combines the two disciplines through the design of a workshop for stakeholders in the field of evaluation.

Here, the unique story is designed by means of personal imagery, inclusive storytelling, the touching presentation, and the vibrant stroke. I work in various creative areas such as art direction, graphic design, set design, and illustration. Still, my main focus is on animation, motion graphics, stop motion, and cinematography. I have always wanted to tell stories using imagery, and in my films the focus is equally on the story as well as the visual expression. I recently cofounded the production company HALVTOTAL with director Jonas Hjort. In HALVTOTAL our creations are based on a quirky and playful universe. Our next project is producing animations for AOK´s annual award show. In August 2012, we begin shooting a short film in collaboration with the Danish Film Institute. My Master’s project “The girl who to wanted die” is a short film directed at children and adults both, about losing someone you love and how difficult it is to let go.

I am a visual designer working with a variety of media including illustrations, visual identity, animations, motions design and photography. I embrace the possibilities of visual communication and enjoy the meeting of interdisciplinary collaborations. I work in the interplay between playfulness, creativity, and seriousness. I have a penchant for the three-dimensional universe, where I value the analogue style and a personal expression. My Master’s project focuses on the waiting room at Bispebjerg psychiatric hospital where I have worked with redesigning the atmosphere of the waiting room. The concept of designing atmosphere is a relatively new phenomenon in the design area and it defines working on creating a mood, a feeling, and an experience for the receiver. My focus is on the visual and interactive problems of the waiting room, and I have worked visually and conceptually with redesigning the room’s physical environment.

I work with 2D and 3D illustration as well as animation with a special passion for the handmade, the poetic and meaningful, and with a sense of detail and thoroughness. Most often, I work with a handmade approach. I think the tactility of the initial real objects triggers a unique connection, understanding or attraction between you and the product, even if the product ends up being a printed photo or screen image. I enjoy drawing life around me; it gives me the possibility to capture the small, everyday peculiarities and provides inspiration for characters and animation movements. My favourite techniques/materials/ tools at the moment are: Pencil, ink, paper shapes, wood cut “pencil rub print” and paper maché.

As an illustrator I work with all kinds of objects and materials. I do both analogue and digital work and I find both design, art, and handcraft very exciting and inspiring. I enjoy working with contrasts and creating something special from things that traditionally diverge. My work is often very colourful and tactile. As an illustrator my goal is to convey a story or a statement in a visual way. My Master’s project is a work of collaboration between fashion and illustration, made in collaboration with Maja Linstrøm Hansen. The main subject of our project is children’s play. We have used the concept of play both as our subject and as our primary method. We have divided Play into five categories. The five categories are: role-play, rule games, construction/experimenting with materials, physical playing, and gathering or collecting things. Based on these categories we have developed a collection that is playful both in terms of expression and process.

I love telling stories visually and to work with various techniques and media to create visual artwork and design. I seek to surprise and challenge the viewer in quirky and interesting ways. My interests are storytelling, illustration art, scenography, installation, graphic design, book binding and print design. My Master’s project, “The Spectacle of Wonder”, explores the visual narrative and wondrous allure of “illusion”, or the “illusive”, and how it can be applied to evoke emotion and intrigue in visual storytelling and illustration. “The Spectacle of Wonder” is a visual universe to be utilised in the promotion material of the deceptive stage act of a magician.

I am a dedicated draughtsman and illustrator with a soft spot for the world of comics. I have always drawn and will continue to do so. I enjoy illustrating children’s books as well as horror books and all the wonderful things in between. The challenge of creating the right atmosphere and mood for a story is a key motivator for me in the process of a project. I have worked on various illustration projects such as comics, books, magazines, pins, logos, folders, portraits, street art, etchings, tattoos, presentation material, web pages, games, posters, banners, and T-shirts. My Master’s project is about using the new technology to create an original comic book reading experience. The comics on the digital market today are merely comics for print formatted to the new media. But this comic is being built for tablets!

When I start a new project, I usually have a clear vision in my mind of what I want to do, and then I begin to experiment. My projects are always based on and deal with my own personal questions or wonders about the human psyche and social or cultural issues. However, the media change and I try to experiment with them to find the best way to portray the issue in a simple and understandable way, whether it be in the form of a sculpture, a piece of textile, or a movie installation. It interests me to try out new media or materials and learn about their strengths as a tool of communication. My Master’s project investigates and interprets our emotion-based actions when we experience a strong feeling either of happiness, grief, or anger.

Primarily, I work with drawing and the pencil is my faithful companion. I do traditional book illustrations, comic books, and posters. I also work with woodcut print where the contact with the material, the ink, and the old techniques enable me to fully immerse myself in the process of making a picture. What makes illustration interesting for me is when I am able to achieve a balance between the figurative and the abstract, and the gap between the two provides a space for the viewer’s own interpretation or wonder. I find it exciting to be able to add something to the story without compromising its essence. In the making of an illustration I consciously and unconsciously seek inspiration in everything I see, and usually I work by hand and end up with a digital editing. My Master’s project is a visual interpretation of extracts from the Danish writer St. St. Blicher’s (1782-1848) short stories and poems.

I seek inspiration in all visual media. I have always been drawn towards visual media and storytelling. Drawing is my main tool of visual communication. When I start a project I always start with the drawing. When I draw I have a shared “conversation” between the drawing and myself. I know a drawing is working when it feels like the drawing creates its image in front of me. Even though I work with other media, I tend to return to the basic drawing when visualising my thoughts and ideas. I like to experiment with other media, but drawing is the tool that makes me the most comfortable. I like to work with my hands and work with projects that evolve from 2D to 3D; this is an interesting transition for me. The main thing that makes me really excited as an illustrator is the possibility to use my imagination. My Master’s project is a visual representation made in jewellery of the universe of the classic sci-fi movie “Metropolis 1927” by Fritz Lang.

As an illustrator I enjoy exploring the world of the imagination where fantasy blossoms and worlds and weirdos live and thrive. I seek to create immersive images which magnetise the audience using the whole palette of colours, depth, light, shadow and character. I enjoy entertaining and sparking the imagination of youngsters and people whose imagination is still running rampant. While I was flattered when a boy concluded “that I could draw everything in this world”, what really drives me is drawing that which is out of this world. This is probably why I currently have my stomping grounds in the game industry, fusing play with immersion and fantasy. As a professional I go to great lengths to solve tasks not only from an aesthetic point of view, but taking into account all aspects of the job ahead of me. My work is manly inspired by nature, feelings and moods. This means that I work a lot with poetic storytelling using many different media. Some of these are pencil, pen and ink, etchings, photography, animation and modelling in different materials. On the basis of my former work with furniture making I try to work with the concept of illustration in a more physical way, both in the process and also in the final product. The ways I achieve this is by getting my hands into the media and getting them dirty. Some of the qualities I seek in this process are textuality and sensibility. For my Master’s project I have been working with visualising the ancient Danish folktales focusing on the creatures that inhabit them. These creatures have many names like ‘the invisibles’ or ‘the ones underground’, but perhaps they are most commonly known as trolls, fairies, gnomes and dwarfs.

As an illustration designer I work with visual storytelling. I am a trained painter and illustrator, and my work is intuitive with a spiritual aspect. In my work, I endeavour to question old ways of thinking and inspire to illumination. I enjoy being open to all sources of input when I work: interviews, websites, stories, the dream from last night, or a nice walk in the woods. I usually work in bigger scales and strong colours using different art forms, such as video, singing, drawing and sketching, writing, photography, dancing, etc. Entering a hospice means realising that you have entered the final stage of your life. For my Master’s project I have designed a space for a hospice that allows the emotions connected with dying to unfold, without manipulation or control. The room can be used for contemplation, to mourn or meditate, or even just to get a glimpse of the sky. The project is completed in collaboration with the Sct. Maria Hospice Center, Vejle.

At the Department of Product Design we develop products and solutions for our common future. Designers develop these while brilliantly meeting the classic requirements for design concerning shape, function, and aesthetics. However, their products and solutions also contribute by being innovative in terms of materials, ecologically desirable, and by having a wide – sometimes offbeat – target audience. The Department of Product Design comprises the disciplines fashion, textiles, and industrial design.

The common denominator for the specialist fields is that the solutions produced often involve a product; therefore, all of the students are very knowledgeable about materials, just as the workshops are often included as a natural part of the design process. The teaching is conducted by practicing designers as well as researchers ensuring a knowledge generating interplay between practice-based knowledge and recent design research. This enables the students to decode and translate trends and needs into unique expressions.

In the textile discipline the students work with the classic tools of the textile fields: weaving, knitting, and print. The focus is on developing new design within the design areas fashion and interior design. However, there is an increasing emphasis on transforming textile values into new contexts and technologies. Hence, digital instructional tools have gained a footing at the department and are now considered equally important as the analogue techniques.

The inspiration for my Master’s project is the old Nordic legend about the Viking shaman “the Völur”. By traveling to the underworld during trance, the shaman predicts “Ragnarok”. I use this inspiration in developing textiles for the body. The materials range from pheasant feathers, horse hair and leather to paper, latex and plastic. The final collection consists of five accessory collars and a jewellery collection of silver rings. My passion is to tell stories through raw and dramatic textile concepts. My goal is to transform my inspiration in all parts of the design process, within illustrations, textiles and staging. Based on my textile knowledge I work with colours, textures and contrasts between materials. Furthermore, I use accessories to create shapes and jewellery for the body. In the end, I have focused on the translation of my universe for the final scenario of the photo shoot. This is done to create a strong and fascinating atmosphere that connects aspects of the whole project.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in textile design specialising in print. For the past two years I have worked with interior spaces, and my Master’s project consists of a collection of materials for a modern sensory-orientated bathhouse. I am interested in what the textile designer can add to the design field in terms of space and objects such as tactility, material and colour understanding. I like to work with a holistic design view focusing on the user, functionality, and visual expression. In my earlier work I have focused on humour and transforming existing materials and the references connected to a product. My work is highly conceptual and I like to work on many things simultaneously. I am energetic and passionate about my work. One of my main skills is an inexhaustible idea depot and the ability to work across many disciplines. I am motivated by the wish to push the boundaries for what is possible within interior space and products creating unique experiences.

Having a very delicate sense of materials, surfaces, shape and light is very important to me, since the very essence of the expression of the design occurs in the interaction between these. I find it fascinating to work with moods and atmospheres as well as ways whereby I can add sensuousness through my designs. Inspired by three different sound sequences, the objective of my Master’s project has been to create a sensuous collection of lamps. As a material of inspiration, sound is intangible in connection with shaping. But by using the language of shape description associated with sound, it became possible for me to transfer the connotations of the sounds into my designs. By using combinations of materials, shape and light, my motivation has been to create a collection of lamps which would add a certain sensuousness to the atmosphere of a room and thereby influence people’s perception of the room.

Being a textile designer I work with a broad range of projects. Within the textile field my interest always originates with materials, colours and techniques and the emotions they evoke. In my work I am seeking the right composition that will provide a certain edge to the finished concept. In the design process it intrigues me to investigate the fine line between what is beautiful and what is repulsive, with a stroke of humour. I love coming up with concepts and make every piece tell a part of the story. It fascinates me how aesthetics and tactility can help us tell stories that cannot be told with words. In continuation hereof I find that my textile background provides a great advantage in creating sensitive and emotional products in various fields. My Master’s project, “the.hen.run”, is based on life in a hen run. I am fascinated by the characters of hens and roosters, how they move and how they find their place in the hierarchy of the hen run.

I am a knit designer. Before entering Kolding School of Design, I was studying textile art in Sweden. Because of my background, I often approach knitting as a form of art to overcome some of my own limitations concerning knitting. This gives me the opportunity to immerse in the development of the textile which I can apply to knitwear design. In the development process it is crucial for me to use the time it takes to get to know all aspects of knitting: The form, the colours, the qualities of threads and how it all comes together with my technical and aesthetic skills as a designer. Based on selected paintings by Danish artist Kathrine Ærtebjerg, I created a collection of knitwear for my Master’s project. Together with Ærtebjerg I picked nine different paintings that I interpreted and analysed. From there I created my own universe which I used as the basis for my collection.

I am a textile designer and focus primarily on knitting both by hand and using machines. My great and endless fascination lies in the fact that you can create stunning designs using just thread. I master most of the traditional craft techniques, which I like to challenge and apply in new ways. I have great respect and love for the craft, and I see it as my supreme task to put this into play in a contemporary context. My Master’s project is directed towards a future collaboration with a fashion designer. The framework is based on the first Danish translation of “Alice in Wonderland” (1964) with the original illustrations (1865), the very first movie of “Alice in Wonderland” (1903), and Tim Burton’s film version (2010). From these I select elements to be transformed into textile samples.

I am a textile/print designer within fashion and interior. After years of fashion education and work experience, both in Brazil and Denmark, I now focus on apparel products for women. Looking for inspiration can many times be time consuming and unnecessary. Very commonly, the normal and small things surrounding people in their everyday lives can provide the most beautiful inspiration if you really pay attention. That is why I usually work with photography as my first resource to generate ideas and elements to compose my patterns. Mix of photography, digitally manipulated unusual materials, bold prints, and expressive colour charts are my trademark. The analogue methods are part of the resource to generate materials for the prints, but I am no romantic about that. Digital printing is one of my passions and allows me to be absolutely free and limitless when creating my designs.

The fashion discipline focuses primarily on designing clothing which decodes, mirrors, and reflects the present. The students are given time and pace for thoughts, experiments, reflections, and intuition to roam freely in the constant slipstream of trends, which also characterises fashion. Form and concept development and materials knowledge are part of the core subjects of the curriculum, and the students learn to build entire collections aimed at target groups and production facilities.

As a designer I like the interplay between art and functionality. For me, function is an important consideration, especially when designing menswear, which is my passion. I work a lot with materials, and I am a hands-on kind of guy. The pencil is my best friend but I am also good with my hands. Therefore, I switch between sketching and doing experiments. For my Master’s project I have chosen to work with superheroes because I believe superheroes are an up-andcoming major trend. Just look at all the movies coming out about superheroes and people with extraordinary abilities. For this collection I have created my own superheroes who have served as my muses. This has enabled me to drag anything I wanted into my collection. Some things I have also drawn directly from the superhero costume, such as the graphic lines of the suits and the notion of a blurred line between different garments.

My Master’s project aims to make sustainable fashion the most desirable choice. Therefore, I have focused on making attractive sustainable garments for women looking for quality and exquisite details as I believe it is possible for sustainability and high quality to go hand in hand. For this purpose I have worked with the following sustainable parameters: All items in the collection must be recyclable and able to compost in order to have a minimal environmental impact. The collection is designed by acknowledging and using the negative spaces around the body to create light and airy silhouettes. It uses graphic and asymmetric cuts to express this. As a designer I am very interested in exploring the boundaries between nakedness and the covered body. I often use transparent materials, and in my construction process I focus on holes, openings and cuts to emphasise the light and dreamy world I am working in.

When working with clothing I use my background as a tailor and combine it with textile skills and handcraft focusing on colours and tactility. I work with many different kinds of inspiration, but I find it particularly interesting to use non-visual sources of inspiration and then create my own visual universe through photos, drawings and materials. My Master’s project is a work of collaboration between fashion and illustration made in collaboration witk Rikke Karlsen. The main subject of our project is children’s play. We have used the concept of play both as our subject and as our primary method. We have divided Play into five categories. The five categories are: role-play, rule games, construction/experimenting with materials, physical playing, and gathering or collecting things. Based on these categories we have developed a collection that is playful both in terms of expression and process.

Studying women’s wear fashion and various old textile techniques has allowed me to develop a variety of skills throughout my Master’s programme. I have worked in the cross-field of old techniques such as weaving, tufting and dyeing in the process of cutting a garment. This has got me involved in collaborations with companies like Dosa Inc. in L.A and Strange in Denmark. My portfolio reflects a love for classic cutting as well as great periods of research and idea generation related to developing both the textiles and the garments. The research for my collections often turns itself into entire universes of objects, textiles, illustrations, videos, installations, which I have used in styling for magazines, trend materials and exhibitions. The care for human comfort and beauty, a love for textiles, the link between craftsmen and designers and zero waste, next to the ’foolishness’ or ’escape’ of fashion seem to be the poles of my work.

I play with the line between masculinity and femininity by challenging the rules of what is considered masculine but still complying with the rules of traditional menswear. The quality and the fit of each garment are very important in order to achieve a coherent collection. It is all bound together in the importance of the details to create another level of perception. My Master’s project is inspired by the aesthetics of “The Magnificent Seven”, seven cemeteries in London. The contrast of old versus new, the decay and transformation of these cemeteries, are transformed into a menswear collection. By combining this aesthetics with classic, tailored menswear details and various textile treatments, I create my own interpretation of modern menswear.

Clothing as a means of communication has been a recurring theme throughout my years of study. The starting point of my Master’s project was emotional attachment to one’s wardrobe. In my previous projects I have focused on how clothing defines a person exter nally. For my Master’s project, I decided to focus on how the body defines the clothes. Body movement and wear and tear shapes the final appearance of a garment and leaves a trail of the person wearing the clothes. For my final project I wanted to recreate some of those elements in a wearable collection.

I create menswear which focuses on the masculine look by empowering the strength of the male with dark nuances. As a fashion designer I possess a strong design aesthetic represented by sleek, youthful cuts and lines creating street chic with an edge. I work with materials such as leather, wool and cotton, which I reconstruct by working with the qualities of the materials thereby creating a new material look. The topic for my Master’s project is bricolage, which is to sample different style references by putting them into new contexts and thereby creating a new set of values. In doing so, I have taken my inspiration from a picture of six guys taken during Paris Fashion Week 2011. The picture shows them wearing completely different style references which works within the group. I have always been an all-round thinker and worker. I love to build and explore my own universes, which I describe through form, experiments, materials, words and my own photos. Therefore, I let my Master’s project focus on this part of the design process and let the trend book become my media as well as my product. The fact that a small book can contain a whole universe, which is at the same time just a selection of the Zeitgeist, is very fascinating to me. Here, I have the possibility to connect fashion with different media, tell tactile stories and share my universes with others. During the work process I always shift between the micro and macro frame of mind and approach and try to include many different aspects of a given topic. I am interested in dressing the body in shapes that gives it a complex silhouette. In my design process, I work with expression, transformation, deconstruction, and the intention of showing the way to a multitude of diversity in the visual expression for both men and women. I strive to make clothes that are not broken down by gender but have a common starting point. My Master’s project collection has no specific gender orientation; the collection is spacious and suitable for both men and women. When creating a collection that has an avant-garde, underlining conceptuality it is important to maintain recognisability in some elements of the collection. Therefore, I have made use of shirt and suit components in order to underline the wearability and recognisability of the silhouettes. My final collection is kept in a monochromatic BLACK as an homage to the Japanese fashion revolution, and the title is WTAHTKC; wHITEtHINGSaREhARDtOkEEPcLEAN.

Industrial design focuses on design solutions which incorporate function, form, and production possibilities into one collective design solution. Industrial design students study classic design disciplines such as sketching, 3D programming and model making, but they also spend more and more of their time on overall concepts focusing on the future of the users as well as immaterial values and aspects of the products. When I first started having an interest in industrial design I hoped to make a difference with my projects. During my studies at Kolding School of Design, my interest in social design and service design has grown. To me it is hard to distinguish interaction design and product design. I believe that it is important to be part of the environment that I am designing for; to establish myself as a resource design wise. I am keen on using interaction design methods in my research to get the user-knowledge I require for the further process. I am widely experienced concerning a variety of methods that, in the course of time, have made me a strong team player, a good concept developer, and a convincing presenter. I hope to develop my knowledge in the field of healthcare design even more in my professional life as a designer. In my masters project I have designed a solution that aims to eliminate medication errors at the Medical Department at Kolding Hospital, by changing the way medicine is handled by nurses from the medicine room to the patient.

For me designing is a way to experience and examine the world around me. My work always depicts my personal interpretation of life and my relations to other people, other objects and other beliefs. I make sure to leave a little piece of myself in every object or solution I create hence I believe this is the only way to create designs that people will find special and meaningful. For my Master’s project I have worked in the cross field between industrial design and fashion developing new methods and approaches to design that can help designers create products that relate to functionality, emotions, and identity. I have worked with products and objects that we carry close to our bodies on an everyday basis. Products we take with us when we leave home. These accessories are interesting because they tell a story of where we are going and what we are going to do, but also of whom and what we are.

I am a versatile designer who masters both conceptual and technical aspects of the design process. I have a very playful approach and always strive to give to the product some characteristic features and personality that will make it stand out from the crowd. During my education I have worked within many categories of product design, from futuristic electrical cars to pink horse stables for Lego. Working with new fields and continuing to learn are very motivating factors for me as is having fun along the way. My Master’s project consists of a series of lamps inspired by transformation and simple geometry. The lamps have an anonymous appearance in their closed state, but as soon as they open, a more exciting and characteristic expression is unveiled.

I have an artistic approach to design where I explore different kinds of structures, tactile feelings and mathematical principles related to designing; the outcome is a design with an extraction of these explorations of qualities. My range of work involves traditional design concept development as well as artistic pieces. I focus particularly on creating lighting design and exhibition design with aesthetic considerations. For my Master’s project I have worked with lighting design influenced by the Italian renaissance and its theoretical approach to art and architecture; that is, its scientific and mathematical approach to aesthetic matter. My newly gained knowledge of the emphasis on rational mathematical proportions and usage of geometry in this historic period influences me to create in that spirit and challenge the modern approach to industrial design. The lamp is a geometric abstraction of a renaissance dome combined with modern technology and production methods.

Throughout my time at Kolding School of Design I have become experienced in many different fields of design and ways of approaching different kinds of tasks. Product design, furniture and bicycle design are among the fields where I feel this experience has embodied itself in my works. I have found strength in working with the ‘hands on approach’ regarding both objects and materials, but also when it comes to dealing with the people involved in different projects from users to experts. My interest in materials and tech nologies has given me a strong set of workshop skills along with a lot of experience and knowledge. I am an industrial designer based in Denmark. Before I started studying industrial design I worked as a graphic designer at a small company which I started up with some friends back in 2006. During my studies I have focused on aesthetic design within the fields of furniture, interior and toy design. My passion for interior and furniture design was one of the reasons I started studying industrial design in the first place. Throughout my years of study I have worked both personally and professionally within these fields. When I am not thinking about design, I spend time with my family. My family is very important to me and one of my biggest sources of inspiration. They provide the energy that defines my work. The aim of my Master’s project is to develop toys that create meaningful activities for children. Simultaneously, it should teach children about ethics and morality through play or through the icons it introduces.

My main interest is in lifestyle products and furniture; I love working with form and aesthetics and I think a product needs to have a soul. In my design work I strive to ask questions and find the answers that do not immediately present themselves. In the initial phase of a project I never know what I am going to end up with, and I find this part of the process thrilling; sometimes it can feel like a wonderful treasure hunt and sometimes it feels like getting lost in a maze. However, looking back I always see an organic journey with loops and steps in all sorts of directions and a final product that I would have never been able to make without these excavations. I can sense when a design is just right and answers what I asked in the beginning. My Master’s project is a LED lamp that will appeal to well educated, urban and design conscious women between the ages of 25 and 55.

I like to see myself as a fireball with a passion for radical innovations and perfection and the skills to get it out there. I practically grew up in my father’s workshop where he made custom automation solutions for industry productions, and I have always felt an urge to create and suggest how to make things better and more efficient. I am an industrial designer with a broad skill set. My main areas of expertise are concept development and 3D finalising, sketching rough 3D models in 3D, and creating production-ready CAD models. I have experience with different production methods and hands-on knowledge of prototyping with 3D printing and CNC. Drawing and visualising is one of my most used methods for conceptualising and communicating the design task. I use a wide range of methods and programs to achieve the desired result in a fast and artistic manner. Based on the many different projects I have done I consider myself a great generalist designer with the ability to engage in most projects. That said, I have a distinct passion for toy design, game design, electronic design, and shape development. With my Master’s project, “The Future Loudspeaker”, I aim to explore and fill in new and emerging needs of musical events with the speaker and its role for tomorrow’s consumers at the centre.

I am from China and have lived in Denmark for five years. My purpose for coming here was to learn Danish product design. During my five years at Kolding School of Design I have been able to study different approaches to product design. I have also built up my professional profile by completing projects in many different areas. Living between two cultures has made me a good communicator. Because of my special cultural background I have participated in different workshops filling different roles. I have done internships both in Denmark and China. All of my experiences have given me a better understanding of how production depends on context. I am also not afraid to challenge the boundaries on both sides, but elegantly. As a production designer, my passion is to find the balance between the craftsmanship and the modern design technology. In my design studies I have worked with various materials. I am always interested in how I can apply different materials using different methods, so products can bring a better user experience.

A natural curiosity for exploring space and shape, materials and objects has led me to this point of finishing my Master’s degree. Working with design has become very personal for me meaning that I always include my own personal values in the process. Honest, clean materials, functional detailing, and telling a clear story; these are keywords which have grown on me and play an important role in my work. As a designer I feel I am in a position where I have a great deal of responsibility and I try to be conscious about sustainability – not as my driver, but as a natural consideration. In my work I often explore different aspects of design: Customer journeys; hands-on research such as cultural probes; observation; quick sketches and mock ups; using my hands, head and sense of sympathy; dynamic and giving team work. For my Master’s project I have created a food workshop with a holistic focus on the way we sense sustainability, materials and raw food; the sensuality of everyday life.

About In the course of my studies, I have explored the broadness of my profession. I have worked with anything from expressions in furniture to the function of a milking stable. To me, research represents an essential foundation for any product, and I have included expert as well as user knowledge in my projects. I am fascinated by all aspects of the design process; however, due to my background as a sculptor, I am particularly intrigued by the process of adding shape to products. During this process I use my hands to create and work a great deal with mock ups, 1:1 models and user-involvement. I enjoy working with different types of people and across disciplines as I believe this adds new elements to one’s projects. I love to be captivated, challenged, surprised, fascinated, inspired, baffled, touched, shocked and breathless; design enables me to feel all of this. My Master’s project, “Made of Waste”, is a bar stool intended for kitchen use. It is created together with Spekva, a company specialising in kitchen table tops.
