International DesignCamp2012

NUDGE

DESIGNING POSITIVE BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE

What

DesignCamp The DesignCamp is an annual, recurring event at Kolding School of design. For two weeks, it joins Danish and international students, companies, designers, researchers, and others with an interest in design in addressing global challenges and solving common issues based on a current theme. The DesignCamp offers an intense design process for students as well as open conference days with talks, cases and workshops for

companies and others with an interest in design. This year the theme is Nudge – Designing positive behavioural change. Register and learn much more about previous DesignCamps and the DesignCamp2012 on: designcamp2012.dskd.dk.

Why The theme of this year’s DesignCamp is Nudge. Specifically, the Camp will focus on nudging – that is designing positive behaviour – within public health, city planning, social conditions, play and learning, and sustainability.

Nudge

Design

”A nudge is an attempt to influence people’s choices and behaviour in a way that is predictable and corresponds with their reflected preferences without limiting their options or substantially altering the costs of the alternatives, costs being conceived as economy, time, inconvenience, social sanctions, and similar”

”When designers employ nudging as an alternative to traditional information campaigns it is an attempt to change behaviour without imposing new rules or restricting user options. Instead, the designers use their knowledge from related professions such as anthropology, psychology, and sociology to design for the human decision processes”

— Pelle Guldborg Hansen Chairman of the Danish Nudging Network

—Mette Strømgaard Dalby Head of Development, Kolding School of Design

Nudge Design ”This year’s DesignCamp focuses on how we design a nudge in the right direction; how companies can include nudging in their products and services – to benefit the individual as well as the community – and how we can equip designers to perform this work. To design nudging requires a great deal of knowledge about human behaviour and the ability to reflect on the ethical aspects of designing human behaviour” —Karen Feder Design Consultant, Design2innovate

Smaller plate – less food If we change the size of our plate from 12 inches to 10 inches, we eat 22% less food.

The road to the rubbish bin Green footprints guiding us to the public rubbish bins prompt us to use them. This process happens on an unconscious level because our social norms tell us that other people expect us to throw our rubbish in the bins.

Red man, stop! 10, 9, 8 ‌ green man, go! Countdown traffic lights make the wait easier because we are able to follow the countdown until we are allowed to cross the street.
