How we listen, feel and experience the world is part of our everyday lives, it is also an important tool when designing solutions. To have empathy, to be empathetic is a key driver to inspire and inform us about what we do as human beings in our daily lives. This, combined with design methods, formed the starting point for teaching second year students from Department of Communication Design from Kolding School of Design with focus on waste and recycling in our part of the world. This is done on the basis of experience, gathered and harvested on the African continent in a 9-week course with the same students in autumn 2011. Kolding School of Design send 60 students to Kumasi in Ghana to work on Kwame Nkrumah University with waste issues, which is a severe and growing problem in this part of the world.

With the project SPILD we contrasted local and national waste issues with global issues and tried to look at new approaches and solutions in this context by using a large optic – but in a local context. Our approach depends on how far we already are on development in Denmark – and with cheers encouraging Danes to be proud of it – and make it even better in the future – and help the rest of the world on the right track.

preface

This publication is an introduction to how design methods can be used through research methods and analysis, to concretise issues and develop prototypes, innovative solutions and concepts of these.

Designskolen Kolding

Kolding School of Design

The Department of Communication Design educates Communication Designers specializing in one of the disciplines, Graphic Design, Illustration and Interaction Design. These three disciplines overlap in both professionalism, methodology and theory - but they are also specialized areas, each with its own unique characteristics. Therefore, when you graduate as a Candidate from Department of Communication Design you graduate with a specialization in one of the fields mentioned above.

Communication design has the purpose to change people’s knowledge, behavior and attitude. Examples of this can be that we are hacking spaces, we make computer games for alcoholics, we change hospitalized patients’ experience of waiting, we design way-finding using audio or designing posters for dyslexics.

Knowing that design can affect attitude and visualize complex social contexts is central to Communication Design at Kolding School of Design. It requires that you as a student’s have the willingness and ability to explore the coherence of things on a practical, artistic and theoretical level. This means that we often use the experiment as a driving force in projects and that students develop a critical eye on their design process and their role as a designer.

Our vision is to be updated on today’s media developments and how they change our way of living, feeling, thinking and being together. We design social relationships and experiences – both in collaboration with companies and on the internal level of dreams. We want to be sustainable, critical and responsible, but we also worship political incorrectness and the imaginary future landscapes. We do not design technologies but use design to question the impact of technologies.

Servicedesign

Introduktion

Introduction

Service design is about seeing users as part of a system that can be redesigned. You mainly look at workflows and processes, which subsequently leads to develop specific products and systems that can support or modify these processes. User experience is the center of service design which means forming the path through the service, a company or a organization offers. Working with servicedesign the designer identify all the touchpoints the user experience in the system. This optimization may consist of many things. This could be rationalize workflows, to improve the service level or about offering new services that fit into existing workflows and thereby optimizes the experience.

One of the most important aspects of working with services that are to change people’s behaviour is to recognise that knowledge about motivation is one of the most vital aspects of the design process. At Kolding School of Design we train our students to embed themselves in given situations in order to glean knowledge about ways of acting and the underlying structures that drive them. There are a number of specific tools that can be brought into play – the most commonly applied being “fly-on-the-wall” that simply observes without making value judgements. Probing is a form of expanding questionnaire that activates the respondent to express feelings through action, photography and creative development. These insights can then feed into the given solution and give it a stronger basis to build on. Co-creation is an inclusive process that allows respondents to be involved in forming the solutions in structured developmental processes. All of this means that the solutions themselves are distinctly suited to the given environment and include a full range of insights and in that way form a bridgehead to new ways of being.

CONCEPT The stationary containers and the space around the containers will be used to indicate what needs to be sorted into the containers. Through our research we found that people copy the behavior of others. When the waste is sorted wrong, the next user will probably do the same. Therefore, we wanted to prevent people from being able to look into the container, and instead force them to look at the new visual information. However, with the curtains they are able easily to throw their waste into the containers.

The new identity for the recycling station, easily gives the user an overview of the station and a clear information about waste and recycling. The identity consists of color-coded containers, a overview map that is located at the entrance to the station. All containers are color coded and having infographics in front of them. Telling about what happens to the waste. To prevent you to look into the container, it´s equipped with plastic strips with printed icon for which kind of waste. problemstilling Ikke mange mennesker kender virksomheden PNA 83 og deres fullservicesystem.

issue Not many people know the company PNA 83 and their full service system. The system makes it easy for large kitchens to get rid of their food wastes in a hygienic, economically and environmentally responsible way. The organic waste is sorted in barrels which get collected and burned in order to avoid disposal. This also avoids attraction of pests such as rats and an environmental spoilage, caused by rain which washes out heavy metals from other waste, which subsequently can leak through to our drinking water. Finally the service ensure a spread of infectious animal diseases. the food waste is used as reactor feed in biogas plants in which the produced gas is converted into electricity and heat, and the digested biomass used as a fertilizer.
