FOREWORD We, the Derrick staff, submit this book to our friends for their approval or condemnation. We have tried to portray in this publication school life as it presents itself to us in all its various forms. As the Senior class of 1940 is sponsoring the an nual, they are presenting it as their gift to the school. We ask our patrons not to judge harshly in our third attempt, but help us to feel that our work has not wholly been in vain.

DEDICATION T o our sponsors, M iss G la d y s W e s b r o o k s and M r. C. E. P o m m e r e n i n g , who have counseled and guided us, encouraged us when our spirits were low, we, the staff, dedicate this third volume of “T he Derrick.

SYNOPSIS Eighteen years have passed since the last Derrick was published. Those eighteen years have seen B urkburnett change from an oil town to an agricultural center. T h e B urkburnett Schools have kept pace with improvement of the city itself and in many cases have led it. In 1922 the schools consisted of the H ardin School, Frame Building, W hite Building, and the Red Building. Construction was beginning on a new high school which was completed in 1923. Improvements have been many. T h e H ardin School, Frame Building, Red Building, and W hite Building have been torn down and in their place has been built a $90,000 build ing for our grade school. T h e generosity and financial aid of Mr. J. G. H ardin made this pos sible. T h e school was named after Mr. H ardin, and its formal opening was November 20, 1938. It was under Mr, C. J. D uncan’s superintendency that this was built. T h a t part of the high school which was used as a cafeteria has been changed into a commercial departm ent of great importance in our school system. T he campus has been beautified by the planting* of grass, trees, and flowers. A high school football stadium has been erected. It is called Westerfield, in honor of Mr. Butler Westerfield, who was superintendent of the school at that time. B urkburnett High School has done remarkably well in competition with other schools, acquitting herself honorably in every contest entered. In 1927 our school won state in the mile run. W e sent representatives to state in declamation in 1930 and in tennis in 1927 and 1928. We had a representative at state also in essay writing. O ur baseball team won county in 1937. O ur typing students have won several honors. T h e students went to district in 1937 and 1938. O ur one-act play won county in 1939. B urkburnett has been very fortunate in the last four years in having such successful football teams. In 1936 our football team won the Bi-District Championship and the Regional Championship in 1937 and 1939. In the form of entertainm ent the school formerly had Colonial Teas. T h e Ju n io r and Senior Classes chose queens and had an election. T here have not always been Ju n io r and Senior plays. T here were at one time only Senior plays. In 1935 the first football queen wSs elected. Since then the football queen election has been one of the highlights of the year, , In 1938 our first school band was organized. Before that time the band was under m unicipal supervision. But we of the present generation are not willing to rest on .the laurels won by those who have gone; on the contrary, we are determ ined to better their achievements and to pass on to those following a goal far above that at which we aimed. It is upon such ideals that Burk b u rn ett Schools have been built, and it is by those sameideals that the schools are steadily clim bing to the status of a larger and better institution.

To the Students and Faculty of the B urk burnett Schools: W ith pleasure I point to the accomplish ments of all connected with the Burkburnett Schools during the past few years. We have built a new grade school building and organ ized and equipped a school band. Through combining with other s c h o o l s , we have secured much additional equipm ent and increased our high school enrollment. We have also won many athletic and literary honors. You students are to be commended for the splendid way in which you have cooper ated with the faculty and administration in making our school-work a success in every way. I take this opportunity to congratulate the Senior Class for sponsoring this annual, and my special thanks and congratulations go to the staff and to the sponsors for their efforts which have resulted in such a splendid yearbook. T o all you students I extend my best wishes for happiness and success in the years to come. In the future as you peruse the leaves of this book, may it bring back only fond recol lections of the many happy and glorious days you spent in Burkburnett High School. Sincerely, C. J. DUNCAN, Superintendent.

Seniors, I congratulate you on undertaking and successfully completing a worthwhile job the publication of this annual for your friends, the students and the teachers of Burkburnett High School. It is my sincere wish that you may always lend yourselves to tasks that contribute something to the pleasure of others. Students -of Burkburnett High School, this school exists for you and you alone. Let us all do every thing in our power to make it a school of which we can be justly proud—our school. Its purpose is to assist you in becoming the most efficient and best person possible. It is a genuine pleasure to be asso ciated with you in your worthy undertaking. Sincerely, GUY C. PRYOR, Principal.

It is with the greatest pleasure that I introduce to you Jam es Louis Montgomery, who has just entered B u rk b u rn ett H igh School as a m uch bewildered freshm an. A lthough he is looked upon with ridicule by his upperclassm en, Jam es Louis takes part in the ju n io r sports, as well as his literary studies. H e learns the m eaning of such vital words as sportsmanship, scholar ship, and dependability. By the end of his first hectic year in high school, Jam es Louis will have gained not only intellectual b u t also practical knowledge.

As a sophomore, James begins to think of the goal that he will try to attain in high school and in life. For a guiding example he has chosen a student who is worthy of impersonation. James has selected this student on the basis of his outstanding characteristics—courage, clean thinking, athletic and literary ability. Since in his freshman year James proved himself worthy of athletic honors, he is more determ ined than ever to prove his loyalty to this school by winning an award for its trophy case.

At last J. L. has become an upperclassman. This year he takes an even more active part in school activities than in pre vious years. As toastmaster at the Junior-Senior Banquet he was quite a success, while his characterization in the Junior play received much applause. His high school ambition was fulfilled when he won the trophy for being the most dependable member of the football squad.

For three long years Jim has waited for this Senior year— the finale of his high school career. Jim was elected the captain of the football team and at the Junior-Senior Banquet he was one of the most enthusiastic guests. Previously Jim had planned his life on the basis of a high school education; but now that the diploma is in his hand, he realizes that he must make provisions for the oncoming future.

REGIONAL CHAMPIONS OF 1939 D uring the spring training season of 1939 the B urkburnett Bulldogs decided to become the “T eam of Destiny.” T h ey stated that their am bition was an unde feated and untied season, m eaning another regional championship. T h e ir ambi tion and desire was realized, for they became regional champions for the second time in the history of the B urkburnett H igh School. T h e season was a rough road to travel and had its ruts and washouts. T he first victory of the season was over Newcastle, with the Bulldogs winning 19 to 0. T h en came an old rival that had defeated the Bulldogs for the regional cham pionship in 1936. Still feeling the sting of that defeat, the Bulldogs defeated Nocona 52 to 6. Crowell, who had disgracefully defeated the Bulldogs 71 to 0 in 1938, was the first conference game. T hey had the advantage of their own field and three all district men b u t were defeated by the Bulldogs 20 to 7. T h e little Holiday team was defeated badly the following Friday, the score being 32 to 6. Chillicothe, with the greatest team in the history of their school, was defeated 20 to 13. Seymour gave the team the greatest scare of the year, but the Bulldogs proved the better team, winning 14 to 7. T h en came three other games before the bi-district game. These were Iowa Park, defeated by a score of 40 to 12, Archer City 35 to 13, and Throckm orton 33 to 0. T h e Stamford Bulldogs were played for the bi-district championship and were defeated 26 to 0. T h en came the climax of the season. Last bu t not least was the D ublin game to determ ine the regional champions of 1939. T h e Bulldogs played fast and furi ously and were rewarded with a score of 21 to 0, and the title of regional cham pions of 1939.
