’63 The 1963 Derrick portrays this year with the hope that long after the song is ended, the melody w ill linger on.

Passing through your doors for the last time, we can hear the echoes and see the shadows of years gone by: echoes o f laughter through shadows o f tears; echoes o f victory through shadows o f defeat; echoes o f hope through shadows o f fear. B. H. S ., you are scarred with memories and marks of classes gone by. To these classes you w ill always be remembered as the center of their high school activities; dances, exciting football games, pep rallies, basketball games, assemblies, and class plays. You have seen the accumulation o f knowledge and the fostering and growth o f life-lon g friendships. Although you are being replaced by growth and progress, you w ill never be replaced in our hearts. Because of this, the Derrick staff proudly dedicates the 1963 Derrick to you, dear old Burkburnett High School.

J o re w o rd The 1963 Derrick Staff has tried to capture a little of the spirit and good times experienced by the students and faculty this year. Although we were unable to cover all the events o f the year, we have tried to make this book a pictorial record which, in future years, w ill remind you o f one o f the happiest times o f your life. We hope you enjoy this annual, for it is your Derrick. Editors;

The Derrick, on behalf o f administrators, teachers, students, and the community, would like to take this opportunity to formally say "Thank You" to our School Board. These devote their time, energy, and efforts to a job for which there is no compen sation other than the satisfaction to be derived from working for something in which they believe and are interested.

That something, in their case, is to improve the

educational opportunities and standards for your children.

S7n JK em oria m CLYDE O. (HUCK) McDONNELL The community suffered a great loss - a business man, a civic worker, a church member, a fam ily man, a friend.

The

Board o f Education, o f which he was a member, also suffered. Huck McDonnell served faithfully, cheerfully, and devotedly with the in terest o f our educational program always at heart.

The many hours

he gave to our school program were lightened by his zest and joy o f life.

He w ill not be forgotten.

This 1963 school annual w ill serve as a book of priceless memories to be cherished by you as the future unfolds. It is hoped that these recorded events w ill help to serve as guide lines toward a rich and rewarding way of life that w ill be held in high esteem by your fellowmen. Your value to society w ill be measured by the service you render to your community. Be vigilant to your duties and obligations o f citizenship.

Be humble

and honest with your fellowman; diligent to high ideals that make for a better way of life . Strive hard to make your aims and ideals in life parallel and congruent to the general objectives o f the dynamic demo cratic society o f which you are an integral and desired part.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Best wishes to those students who are leaving B. H. S. this year to further their education. I sincerly hope that you have laid a firm foundation for your future, whether it be in a school o f higher learn ing or in the school o f life . Students who w ill return to B. H. S. next year - it is my hope *hat you w ill return filled with eagerness to learn and the spirit to set yourself a goal. Youth with a goal is untiring and unconquerable. In a new building, new spirit, new goals, B.H.S. should soar to new heights of accomplishment. Your principal,

SOPHOMORE FAVORITES Toni Savage Rusty Kinnett The Sophomores chose Toni and Rusty as their favorites, and they beam their happiness at the an nouncement. Jeff and Jerry are equally appreci ative of the honor of runners-up.

SOPHOMORE BEAUTY Barbara Wolfe SOPHOMORE HANDSOME Jerry Bingham The Sophomore Class abounds in beauty and handsomeness, but Jerry and Barbara were given this honor. Runners-up Linda Wood and Rusty Kinnett are not shown, but there is no argument that they are also ex cel lent choices for such titles as beauty and handsome.

"Come September, " vividly set in blazing autumn orange against dark brown, easily took first place honors for the senior class float in the Homecoming Parade.

Francie Mills, senior nominee for Homecoming Queen, stood

under a white archway o f blossoms; runners-up Reba Frields and Julienne Abdouch sat on the lovely float near the marble fountain.

Grand Marshal o f the parade, Roy L. Silkwood, principal o f B. H. S. , rode in the head car accompanied by the officers o f the Student Council. The float entries o f the various classes followed.

Each

one carried out the parade theme, Autumn, very appropriately. The participation o f nearly every club in the high school made this year's parade a huge success and-a very colorful affair.
