m e past is guiic, I t ’s far behind me. I t ’s locked behind a guarded door. I knock, and then, at last, I see it; I t ’s there behind me; I can feel it. I long and struggle to return, But the past keeps drifting— backwards.

Today is here! 1 look about me. My world is slowly changing. I feel the warmth o f yesterday And the newness o f tomorrow

I realize now that I aim here; T he past is in my mind. The future bobs in choppy seas, Arid my fate—? I t ’s up to me. - .

Cultivating Responsible Leadership

Pat stands before the Sophomore class to present her qualifications for the office she is seeking.

This sign is a prime example o f the originality dis played by students who campaigned fo r office.

Freshman Mark Peterson seeks the backing o f his classmates.

Confidently, Randy urges Juniors to elect their Vice-President.

It takes courage and ambition to campaign for an office. This year many students at B.H.S. had what it took. Even though all were not successful in their bid, the campaigns brought them closer to the real meaning o f democracy. Darrell encourages Seniors to cast their votes for him.

Delving Into The Mysteries Of Drugs i

1

S I

In October members o f the Texas Youth Council and various law enforcement agencies came to B.H .S. These officials met with a portion o f the student body to an swer questions about drugs and drug abuse. These students, in turn, went into the class rooms and led their fellow students in discussions concerning aspects o f the drug problem.

Several students ponder a confusing point.

One group discusses the penalties involved in the abuse of drugs.

Mr. Jim Phagan, Wichita County District Attorney, an swers a student’s question about narcotics.

Roy leads the discussion in his group. 51

Submission In The

It is a well known fact among high school students that Seniors are superior to Fresh men. This year, as every year, at B.H.S. there was an event in which the Seniors demonstrated their superiority. They dressed the Freshmen in ridiculous cos tumes, complete with shaving cream and lipstick. These costumes, skits, and other acts o f submission helped to make the Freshmen feel more a part o f our school. Bewildered Andy has lost his penny.

Bill leads “fish” in a round of “ Hail the Mighty Seniors” .

Fearful Freshmen await their fate.

Although these members o f the 1 9 7 0 D ERRICK Staff were unable to be pictured on our staff pages, we don’t want their faithful work on the yearbook to go by unrewarded. Therefore, we want to set aside this page to recognize them and thank them for their time and their effort which they utilized for the 1 9 7 0 D ERRICK .

annette barfteld

robert sturges

His many hours, his technical and creative abilities, and his masterful touch helped make Presentation VO one o f the biggest events o f the year. Although not on the staff, his devotion to Presentation has earned him the thanks and praise o f the 1970 D ERRICK Staff, and they would like to make Robert Sturges an honorary member o f the staff he helped so much.

The time for contemplation is past. Speeches will no longer accomplish their goals. Elaborate planning will only strain minds.

The time gro ws n e a r Strange, but reasons for leaving create strong desires to remain. All the effort and the dedication seem useless if the bonds, are to be severed.

As the end approaches—the past commences gushing forth what has been—what could have been -and what will never be. Memories—sad, happy, melancholy, and terrible, but all part o f the being that will soon depart. Dreams o f the future seem suddenly to be, all too quickly, and all top silently, slipping past. Then the realization o f on e’s plight throws one into a sad, and, y et satisfied outlook. To all those who follow —whatever price must be paid for goals that we are now leaving is worth it all, and i t shm ild h e naid for with habbiness.
