The 1971 DERRICK is dedicated to a dedicated teacher MRS. MINNIE BENTON
You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. - Kahlil Gibran

Anticipation and anxiety were the key points of the activities during Home coming, 1970. The individual floats added their touch of excitement as the winners were announced. This year there was a tie for first place between the Junior and Sophomore classes. Second place was taken by the Seniors. Third place belonged to the Freshmen. The crowning of the Homecoming Queen was the clim ax of Homecoming activities. The nominees, Joan Walker, Berta Hancock, Debbie Vincent, and Becky Kennedy - anxiously awaited the outcome of the student body's decision. This announcement brought forth the emotions of everyone in the home sec tion of the Bulldog Stadium as Home coming Queen - Joan Walker - was presented.
Juniors selected "Dixie" as their theme and Debbie Bass as Princess.
Diane Awtrey, Princess, and "Ride Captain Ride" were the Sophomore selections.
42
Ending days of preparation, the final flower was put into place and the class floats were proudly displayed to the public in the Homecoming Parade. Everyone lined the streets as the floats, bands and cars passed for review. These days will be remembered just as long as that mum from someone special pressed between the pages of a scrapbook.

Mrs. Savage has been left ten million dollars by her hus band and wants to make the best use of it in spite of her step-children's efforts to get it. Knowing that the widow's wealth is in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of it, they commit her to a sanatorium. When the doctor says there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a world where people seem ready to do anything for money. The last scene, a fare well party, is a delightful fantasy where each guest in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for some thing he was never able to realize.

Every one of the boys in this section has proved that he has what it takes. These are the boys who were fighting for you and your school every Friday night. This year's team was not one of glory seekers, but one of boys who practiced, trained, worked, and suffered for their school. This was demonstrated by the fact that we had one of, if not the best, teams in Burkburnett's history. This year we played some of the top teams in the state. We really gave those teams something to think about if we ever play them again! They realize now that Burkburnett High is no second-rate school. Remember how much our team surprised everyone (except us) when we ran by Duncan, got revenge on Graham for last year, and beat Weatherford even though it was their Homecoming. And then we literally killed Vernon even though they wanted to beat us so badly because we knocked them out of a chance for district last year, and one of our biggest thrills was beating Hirschi for the first time ever. But we remember also how we started the season off badly by losing to Lawton Ike, how we scared Iowa Park worse than anyone in a long tim e, and how Bonham would have been a different story if it hadn't rained. But most of all we remember how we cried and cried at Stephenville because we knew we should have won, and finally the hurt of losing the District Championship to Brownwood, who won with a little help from their friends. The team isn't everything at the game. The crowd, band, and pep squad play a very important part of any football game. Our follow ings to every game this year were very good. This shows that the stu dents, faculty, administration, and townspeople have backed the team all the way. From every school we visited cam e compliments on the spirit of our crowd. With a team and student body like ours, Burk burnett High School will remain the best anywhere!
