DEEPIKA

Real-life couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are back as an on-screen couple. The actress says considering the kind of movies the pair has done in the past, doing 83 was a refreshing change. Deepika will be seen as Romi Dev, wife of cricket legend Kapil Dev, played by Ranveer in the upcoming film 83. Asked about sharing screen space with her husband once again after movies like Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani, Deepika said, “It was good. It was a refreshing change because of the kind of films that we have done before. It was a completely different setting, era, characters, costumes and dialogues. It was refreshing to work with him in this capacity.” “We were both surprised. We had to remind ourselves that we had worked with each other before because these characters were so different from what we had already done before and we look forward to working with each other in contemporary films a lot more,” said the actress. Actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s upcoming film Gulabo Sitabo reunites him with director Shoojit Sircar, eighth years after their hit, Vicky Donor and also features megastar Amitabh Bachchan. “Gulabo Sitabo is an extremely simple film. It’s a sweet film about the banter between a landlord and a tenant. I’m the tenant, Bachchan sir is the landlord and we are always at loggerheads. It’s as simple as that,” said Ayushmann. “The magic is, sometimes you find simplicity most exciting in life and that’s what the film is about,” he added. Set in Lucknow, Gulabo Sitabo is billed as a quirky family comedy, penned by Sircar’s longtime collaborator Juhi Chaturvedi. Ayushmann, who is teaming up with Bachchan for the first time, said that working with the 77-year-old actor was a learning experience. “Bachchan sir is amazing. What I marvel about him is that he’s so well-prepared always. He will know your lines also. It is not easy to act in front of him. You have to be on your toes as a co-actor,” Ayushmann said. Ayushmann has, over the years, build an onscreen image of doing socially relevant films, touching on topics ranging from balding to homosexuality. The actor said that he’s “full of gratitude” for the work and love coming his way and feels for one to continue doing relatable films, it’s important to keep an ear to the ground. “It’s important to know what’s going around. I dwell on relatable subjects. If you are un-approachable with the common folk, then where will you get your fodder from? It becomes difficult but now I do it with an agenda. To look for good stories,” he added.

GUNJAN SAXENA

G

unjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl will see Janhvi portraying a real-life person for the first time in her career. She plays the role of Indian Air Force officer Gunjan Saxena who had the honor of being the first Indian woman combat aviator to be commissioned into the war zone during the Kargil War.

The film, directed by Sharan Sharma, produced by Zee Studios and Dharma Productions also stars Pankaj Tripathi as Saxena’s father. Who is Gunjan Saxena? Long before the first women fighter pilots were commissioned into the Indian Air Force, Flight Lieutenants Gunjan Saxena and Srividya Rajan scripted history when they ventured into a war zone, becoming the first Indian women in combat. Flight lieutenant Gunjan Saxena was the first Indian Air Force woman officer who went to war. She made history during the Kargil war in 1999 when, as a flying officer, she flew a Cheetah aircraft into the combat zone and rescued several soldiers. Gunjan, the daughter of an Army officer, was summoned by the Indian Air Force when the conflict between India and Pakistan escalated. She was asked to fly in Srinagar and she agreed. Indian Youth reports that Saxena was enlisted to airdrop vital supplies to Indian troops at high points in the Dras and Batalik sectors. According to the website, she also was crucial in informing her seniors about enemy positions and their status which helped the Indian Army strategize. Gunjan Saxena had said missions where she evacuated injured Indian Army soldiers were her biggest motivation during Kargil. “I think it is the ultimate feeling that you can ever have as a helicopter pilot. That was one of our main roles there - casualty

evacuation. I would say it’s a very satisfying feeling when you save a life because that is what you’re there for,” she had said. The IAF pilot had a close shave when an enemy missile missed her aircraft and crashed behind it. She, however, continued with her duties. She was later honored with the Shaurya Vir award an Indian military decoration which was awarded to her for her valor, courageous action or self-sacrifice. Both Saxena’s father and brother were serving in the Indian Army at the time. “I could not wait to be called,” said Gunjan Saxena in an interview back in 2006. She also came to be known as the Kargil Girl. After pursuing her graduation from Hansraj College in New Delhi, Gunjan had joined the Delhi Flying Club at Safdarjung. Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena served as a short service commissioned officer and didn’t quite have the opportunities that women in Air Force have today. Her tenure ended after seven years, but women in the air force can now get a permanent commission. Gunjan said that the decision to induct women as fighter pilots was a positive step on part of the Air Force. “Being a pioneer, I would say, it feels great and I would only say that I hope these women who’ve come into the fighter stream now give their 100 percent and really, really touch the sky with glory”, she added.

AYUSHMANN KHURRANA: BLESSED TO BE ACTING AT A TIME WHEN I CAN ROOT FOR SOCIAL CAUSES Aligarh, and Kalki Koechlin’s strength in Margarita with A Straw.”

Ayushmann Khurrana has proved himself time and again by portraying characters not many have tried before, and he feels blessed to be an actor at a time where he can stand up and root for social causes on screen. On his new film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Ayushmann feels the film has been successfully made, released and accepted is because even before same-sex relationship became legal in India, many actors stuck their neck out and have given the audience some brilliant work on the subject. He says he has all those actors and films to credit first. “The fact that Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is a success today is because the path was made for it by others. Many before me have toiled hard to make the path smoother. We have to realize and acknowledge the monumental work that was done by some of the finest actors of Indian cinema much before me,” he said.

Ayushmann also mentioned films that brilliantly took on the stereotype faced by the LGBTQ+ community. “Films like Kapoor And Sons, Karan Johar’s Bombay Talkies and Sonam Kapoor’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga have all depicted and handled same-sex relationships with profound thought, dignity, and sensitivity,” he noted.

He added, “Before Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, our industry has also made some of the most soultouching films on the subject. I don’t think we can ever forget Shabana Azmi ji’s incredible performance and Nandita Das’s heart-wrenching acting in Fire, Sanjay Suri and Purab Kohli’s vulnerability in My Brother Nikhil, Manoj Bajpayee’s brilliance in

“Today, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is being celebrated the world over and I have to share this moment with all the actors and directors who had taken it on themselves to promote inclusivity in our country. This is a very special moment in my life and I’m cherishing all the love that my film and my performance is receiving and I feel blessed to be acting at a time where I can stand up, back and root for a social cause like this,” he declared.

Very few know that Bollywood Diva Deepika Padukone made her acting debut with Kannada film, Aishwarya. Today, she is not only one of the popular faces in Bollywood but also one of the leading actresses in the industry. Recently, the Chhapaak actress was asked if she would still go back to doing South films if she gets an opportunity and her reply will surely win your heart! Talking about the same, Deepika said, “Of course. Language has never been a barrier. I think at the end of the day, what I look for as an actor is exciting content. In fact, there are a lot of south film directors and writers who approached me. Eventually, I think it’s about finding the right content.” On the work front, Deepika has her kitty full of projects which include, Kabir Khan’s 83 where she will be seen sharing screen space with husband Ranveer Singh. While Ranveer will be seen playing the role of Kapil Dev, DP will be essaying the role of his wife Romi Dev on screen. The movie is based on India’s historic 1983 Cricket World Cup victory. Deepika is also co-producing the movie.

RICH INDIAN HANDLOOMS

imeless, classy and evergreen – the lush Indian handloom sarees have made a major come back, thanks to avid handloom promoters, many brands and Indian silk handlooms lovers like Vidya Balan and Rekha. Earlier thought of only as grand wedding and bridal sarees, Kanjeevarams and Banarasis donned lighter looks – and were seen at parties, film premiers and award functions. Linen sarees, cotton silk sarees and other similar trends are also on a revival route – thanks to Bollywood. In the movie Kalank saw Alia embrace lot of the saree and stunning the audiences. ell, this is one saree trend that promises to always stay fresh in our wardrobes, considering it has been rocking the fashion scene for years now – and is still going strong. Net sarees take on embroideries and embellishments pretty nicely, and create a demure, feminine base for designers to work their magic on. Naturally, we, yet again, saw Bolly beauties flaunting their net party-wear sarees in hoards. Combine this evergreen style with other latest party-wear color or design trends to get a fashion edge, this season. If you are not comfortable sporting an all-net drape, pick a chic half and half sari, as this one hides the waist bumps and flaws, while the pallu continues to bring in the sensuous flare

travel Dream a little Dream in 2020 From Africa to the Americas, there are plenty of things to do, see and experience in the best places to travel in April. Like the other 11 months in the year, April is a superb time to travel, if you know where the best places to travel in April are which you will. Take Taiwan, for example; It’s one of Asia’s bestkept secrets, so you likely haven’t considered it as a destination to be visited at the earliest opportunity, but we strongly recommend you reconsider that position and it’s especially delightful in April. Or for something closer to home, did you know Washington D.C. becomes ablaze in color in April, with beautiful cherry blossoms around every corner? You do now. Keep reading for more inspiration: We have you covered for ideas this April.

SPAIN

pain encompasses a wide region and topography, so the April climate will depend on where you go, but generally speaking, coastal areas which includes the Catalonian capital of Barcelona are balmy, enjoying temperatures of around 20C/68F (brave travelers can just about enjoy sea-swimming). Further south, the beautiful Andalusia region is even warmer, though still comfortable enough to explore on foot it’s pretty villages, like Frigiliana, before the stifling heat of summer arrives.

T

STOCKHOLM

his ridiculously stylish Swedish city, spread across numerous islands linked by over 50 bridges, is a delight to visit in April: temperatures are still chilly (7C/44F, so dress warmly) but days are often bright and sunny and by the end of the month have doubled in length (8 hours of light) compared to the start of March. Other than the views of the city itself, top attractions include the Nobel Museum and Storkyrkan Cathedral, a 13th-century masterpiece.

WASHINGTON DC

W

hile Japan’s cherry blossom season seems to grab most of the world’s attention, Washington D.C. has a pretty good one too, which typically spans late March into early April. The best place to see it is the Tidal Basin, where over 3,000 trees transform into radiant blooms. The weather can be slightly unpredictable at this time of year, swinging between cold rainy days and warm sunny ones, so keep an eye on the forecast before you jet off.

elize may not have much landmass, but what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. It boasts its very own barrier reef (second only in size to Australia’s more famous one), which among other things is where you’ll find the iconic Great Blue Hole. Inland you’ll find ancient Mayan ruins (Xunantunich is the star of though show), and it’s all pleasantly balmy in April.

S

outh Africa’s capital enjoys a temperate year-round climate, rarely dipping below 20C/68F or exceeding 30C/87F, and April usually hits the sweet spot, right in the middle. Being in the southern hemisphere means the seasons are flipped, so this marks the start of autumn, which means the air is a bit cooler, but the sea retains the summer heat for a while yet. If shark diving isn’t your cup of tea, try hiking up Table Mountain instead, or taking the ferry to Robben Island.

HAWAII

awaii enjoys beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures yearround, with temperatures reliably staying above 26C/79F and below 31C/88F. April, however, is a particularly pleasant time to visit, slipping in between the mainspring and summer vacation seasons. The entire Hawaiian archipelago comprises over 100 islands, and the top draws include Maui, Oahu and Kauai.term school breaks draw visitors from Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Dubai, and other parts of Asia.

t’s only a matter of time before Taiwan starts enjoying the same kind of popularity as its South-East Asian neighbors of Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand: this island is an absolute jewel for curious travelers, with its incredibly diverse landscapes and culture-packed cities, full of quirky charms (did you know the garbage trucks blare out classical music on their weekly rounds?). April is mild, with temperatures sitting firmly between 20-23C/68-74F, perfect for soaking up world-class trekking trails and stunning beaches.

STARS REVEAL Malaika Arora

Disha Patani

Malaika Arora shot to fame with the song Chaiyya Chaiyya back in 1998. She feels that though there is a trend of remixes these days, the AR Rahman composition is one of those numbers that simply shouldn’t be touched.

Ever since Mohit Suri announced a sequel to his much loved Ek Villain, titled Ek Villain 2 with John Abraham and Aditya Roy Kapur playing the villains, fans just can’t contain their excitement. Now, giving out yet another interesting casting detail, filmmaker Mohit Suri has confirmed to rope in Disha Patani as the film’s leading lady alongside John and Aditya.

The song Chaiyya Chaiyya, sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi, for the Mani Rathnam film Dil Se is an all-time favourite dance number of most people. Its video featured Malaika and superstar Shah Rukh Khan matching steps atop a train, and continues to be popular. Malaika recently danced to the number, asked about it, Malaika said, “When you play that song, you can’t help but get up and dance. It is an iconic song. When I shot the song, Geeta (Kapur) was assisting Farah (Khan) at that time. I used to study under Terence (Lewis), Geeta assisted me on that dance. It was nice. We felt that ‘let’s just go for it’.” But there’s one thing she would like to point out about recreations. “In today’s day and age there is a constant trend of remixes. There are a few songs that I think you should never touch. They are iconic. There must be five or 10 songs over the years that you can pull out. Chaiyya Chaiyya is one of them. Don’t tamper with it, just let the original be and that’s how it should be,” she said. She doesn’t have anything against recreations though. “I think some of the remixes are fantastic and go with today’s age and kids, but yeah, there are certain things you should not tamper with like The Godfather or Mother India are iconic films. You should just let them be,” she shared.

While fans were in love with Disha and Aditya’s chemistry in the recently released Malang, which too was directed by Suri, it certainly will be interesting to see the dynamics between the trio. Opening up about what made him sign Disha in yet another high octane action film, Mohit has revealed to Mumbai Mirror saying, “Disha is the first heroine who walked up to me and said, ‘I want to do more action, beat up people, perform stunts… kick some butt. Just the way boys do it in your films. I want to be the hero’. That’s when I asked her if she would do the Ek Villain sequel and she was game.” It is no secret now that Ek Villain 2 is rumoured to have two leading ladies. While Mohit has confirmed Disha to be one of them, it will be interesting to see who is roped in as the second lead. Meanwhile, a certain source has revealed to the publication that Disha is in fact paired opposite John and not Aditya. Revealing the reason behind the casting coup, the source further said, “The makers are trying to give the film a different twist by pairing them, considering she was opposite Aditya in their last film. Disha will be seen doing some heavy-duty stunts as well. The hunt for a second leading lady is still on.”

Love, Life and Learning in the Time of Corona

There is no better time than Maha-Shiva-Rathri or the “Great Night of LIFE. Today, we stand on the edge of time, embracing a sacred pause… Airports, and college campuses have become ghost towns; buzzing shopping malls and restaurants appear to be deserted lands. It almost feels surreal, like we are characters in a historical novel or even a science fiction movie with numerous conspiracy theories floating around. Corona, derived from the Latin word meaning “crown”, also refers to the aura that surrounds the sun. Ironically, the corona virus has rapidly struck the entire world right from the crown of our beings, physically infecting some and taking away the breath of life, whilst mentally and emotionally attacking many more. Yes, Corona has been a collective wake-up call, forcing us to stay home and withdraw into our own cocoons. With most of us operating out of our comfort zones, juggling work, home and homeschooling, this is also a time to reflect and learn from this crisis and even grow from this experience. In many ways, we are returning to self and returning to Source. Looking back at history, the world has seen plagues, recessions and periods of darkness; only to be followed by renewal, restoration and light. Some Corona trivia that I learnt from my DesiPages

MADHURI’S MUSINGS English teacher and mentor is the history of the word “quarantine’, now part of our daily vocabulary. In the 1300’s, Venice was the first city in the world to enforce a quarantine to curb the bubonic plague. Travelers visiting Venice had to be isolated for “quaranta” (forty) days, hence where we derive the word “quarantine”. History gives us a timeless moral to learn from and most of all, offers the gift of Hope. Hope is the rope that connects the present moment to the future. We need to hold on to the rope of hope and not give –up. LEARNING. What are some lessons we are learning that will aid humanity’s progress?

Here are some from my thoughts: COLLECTIVE COMPASSION: Covid-19

has activated the compassion compass of humanity beyond race, color or age; to open our hearts and feel the pain and suffering of families directly affected, including healthcare workers in the frontlines, placing their lives at risk. It has cultivated a sense of social responsibility and self-sacrifice in the best interests of the higher good.

BEAUTY OF EMPATHY: For many of us,

being restricted to our homes without the freedom to step-out or feeling pressured to buy groceries in advance to tide over the social distancing period is a luxury in itself. Empathy is switching perspectives and thinking about people with no homes, no space and no funds to purchase. It does alter our perceptions and that is the beauty of empathy.

BACK TO THE BASICS: Corona is taking

us back to the basics, to perfecting hygiene practices as sacred rituals that protect us. We need to keep enhancing our immune systems and renewing our health as a good form of defense. By the end of the Corona crisis, I am sure we can all author a book “Zen and the Art of Handwashing”! DFW | April 2020 VOL 15 | 34

THE

EQUALIZER:

Corona has not distinguished between the royals, the leaders or the common person. Abundance is not just monetary wealth, but having inexhaustible reserves of strength to dip into in times of crisis to help all around us in whatever possible way. Creativity rules in times of crisis. No virus can extinguish the spark of innovation. The creative fire is not just ignited, but continues to burn, giving light, positivity and new solutions to living and working.

Surrender with strength and serenity to the ebb and flow of life; learning to let go of what is not in our control, with sense and sensitivity that will help to build strength and serenity.

FINDING MAGIC IN THE MUNDANE:

Whether its music that stirs your soul, cooking delicious new recipes, planting seeds for a flower garden, or watching the golden sunrise, finding magic in the mundane will reinforce the simple joys and pleasures of living.

POWER OF COMMUNITY: We are inter- TREASURE TIME TODAY: We cannot anticipate connected threads in the tapestry of life. When we come together, collaboratively weaving our energy, efforts and creativity, the power of community is exponential. This is the power that when combined with a cause is paving the way for the future.

RESOURCE

OPTIMIZATION: Life’s resources are too precious to waste, whether it is the resources of time, money or the natural elements. Corona is teaching us to right size and rebalance our lives. LOVE in the time of Corona… It all comes back to LOVE. Love for life, love for the higher self, love for humanity, and love for learning as we all continue to evolve as a species. We are in our own way, guardians of the earth and play our parts in nurturing the self, family and environment we impact.

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND. We are social

beings and we can build bridges and bonds that connect us even when physically separated. Yes, we miss the hugs and happy hours. But this is also a test for the strength and authenticity of relationships that stand strong.

A TIME FOR SOUL-SEARCHING. This is a

future outcomes .Embrace the current moment and gift of the present. Use this time wisely, staying grounded with faith and not overwhelmed with fear.

Be forever thankful for everyone playing his or her part to keep the boat afloat. Whether a parent juggling work and homeschooling, educators continuing to (remotely) keep the spark of learning alive in students, essential workers showing up every day to keep the wheel of life moving, tech wizards that keep us connected, healthcare workers who are our saviors and warriors in protective armor! Global Citizenship could not be more real. Corona is reinforcing that we are all part of one shared humanity, one gigantic quantum field. We will slowly emerge from our cocoons into a new earth. Old structures and paradigms are breaking, and we are walking into the future with a new framework for living and learning. Economic borders are not falling apart but coming together. There is no “I”, “Me” or “My country”. It is “We”, “Our Earth” and “One Global Village”, and we are all better together. Live from a space of love and there will no longer be a void. Love is what will lead us into the light of a new morning – to rise, shine and fulfill our life’s purpose whatever that may be. kajol

Kajol, Shruti Hassan and Neena Kulkarni-actresses belonging to different generations have worked together in the short film Devi. They insist that real empowerment will happen when women unite and share sisterhood, and catfight becomes an outdated concept. Directed by Priyanka Banerjee, Devi revolves around a group of rape victims, from different socio-economic strata, and how they unite to fight a heinous crime like rape. While gender-based discrimination has been happening for ages, it is also true that women often engage in catfights. Kajol, who portrays a rape-victim housewife in Devi, felt, “Catfight is imposed in our mind by society to create insecurity among us, women. I find it is nonsense. When it comes to fights and arguments among women, I would say it is only natural that no two human beings have to get along with each other. Not everyone has to be my friend. That does not mean the person is my enemy or hater. It is high time we women unite to celebrate sisterhood because catfights are outdated.” The film also features Neha Dhupia, Mukta Barve, Sandhya Mhatre, Rama Joshi, Yashaswini Dayama and Shivani Raghuvanshi.

BOLLYWOOD BONANAZA DesiPages

In his last release, Malang, Aditya Roy Kapur went all out to look his best on the screen. While talking about the efforts he took to look his beefiest best in the film, Aditya mentioned that as much as he loves to be on the screen, he would also like to try his hand at an off-screen job. The actor, who’s now busy working on the sequel of Ek Villain, says that he would like to give filmmaking a shot someday. However, unlike his brother, Siddharth Roy Kapur, who produces movies, he would like to direct a film. He says, “I don’t think I am fit to get into production, but I want to direct. The more I act, the more I realize how much effort goes into directing a film. It is a pretty tough job. But until I find a story that I am eager to tell, I won’t get into direction.”

Ever since Bob Biswas was announced, it has been in the news. Starring Abhishek Bachchan and Chitrangda Singh, the film’s first schedule was shot in Kolkata. And recent reports say that the actress is learning Bengali for her role and even taking help from a language coach to ensure that her dialect sounds as authentic as possible. While not much is known about her role in the upcoming crime thriller, the fact that she is learning Bengali suggests that her character could be of a Bengali woman. Sources say that Chitrangda was aware that she would be required to speak in Bengali and is doing all that she can to nail her character. A friend in Kolkata is also said to be helping the actress while a professional language coach is assisting her with the nuances. Since Chitrangda has always liked the language, learning it hasn’t been as difficult as she thought it would be. In a recent interview, Chitrangda mentioned that she was happy when she realized she would have to learn Bengali for the film. Calling it one of her favorite languages, she said that while she understood a bit of Bangla earlier, she was much more fluent in it now and is glad that the film gave her a chance to learn the language.

BOLLYWOOD MOVIES THAT CAPTURE THE ARTISTIC BEAUTY AND CULTURE OF KOLKATA

The city of joy has always had a very close connection with Bollywood. Despite the fact that ‘Bombay’ has always been the hub for cinema, filmmakers venture outside for the real essence of their stories and Kolkata happens to be their favorite cultural destination. The cultural capital of Bengal is a hub for art and heritage and we are not surprised why the directors love this place so much. Here are 10 movies that have been shot in Kolkata and we can’t help but find ourselves falling in love with this place where food, culture, and art dwell in every nook and corner.

A certain darkness is needed to see the stars. “The greatest fear in the world is the opinion of others, and the moment you are unafraid of the crowd, you are no longer a sheep, you become a lion. A great roar arises in your heart, the roar of freedom.” “If you love a person, you accept the total person. With all the defects. Because those defects are a part of the person. Never try to change a person you love, because the very effort to change says that you love half, and the other half of the person is not accepted. When you love, you simply love.” “I live my life based on 2 principles. One, I live as if today was my last day on earth. Two, I live today as if I am going to live forever.” -OSHO-.
