March is the month of Holi and while growing up this was one festival, we siblings waited to celebrate. We in fact started filling water balloons and throwing them at each other way before the Holi-day. Least we knew then, was the significance of Holi. After growing up and understanding what our culture and festival hold, makes them even more worth the celebration. Holi is the “festival of spring”, the “festival of colors”, and the “festival of love”. It signifies the arrival of spring, the end of winter and the blossoming of love. We truly play, laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. In this modern-Day world when nuclear family culture is growing rapidly, these times are a reality check for us to weigh our values. Happy Holi everyone. Let us all join in and celebrate it together this year with Funasia.

FARHAN AKHTAR

SUNNY Actress Sunny Leone says, “I am pretty sure that most of the things I do are against social norms whether it’s on purpose or not. So I just go by what I feel is ideal for me and my family and what I believe in.” The former adult film star is now one of the popular Bollywood actresses. She is also a mother now. She is now hosting a podcast on a music app. “I believe that a lot of the stories are the stories that are very common among different people, but we don’t always talk about it, so if they hear these stories from me and some of the callers, maybe then they will be open to talking about it,” she said. The ‘Jism 2’ actress also shared that she has always been judged. “Judging someone is easy, even if you may not have walked in their shoes, or don’t know the whole story. This fear of judgment leads most of us to brush our dark secrets under the carpet and suffer in isolation,” she said. “This podcast is about sharing this emotional burden that often seems too ugly to embrace,” she added.

Farhan Akhtar has been the talk of the town ever since his movie ‘Toofan’ was announced where he will be playing the role of a boxer. In a recent interview, Farhan opened up about his fitness regime and his time working with Darrell Foster for ‘Toofan’. He shared how it was different shooting for Toofan compared to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and said, “Running is not an alien concept. Everyone can run, some faster than the others, but you always have a general knowledge. Boxing is something I had to learn from scratch because I had never done it before. I am loving every bit of it.” The actor was all praise for his trainer Darrell, “Darrell has been boxing since the age of 10. Now at 61, he is fitter than most teenagers I’ve seen.” He further added, “While shooting, if I’d cover my face completely in a boxing stance, the audience will not be able to see me. At the same time, I can’t lower my arms such that I look like I’m waiting to get hit. That’s the kind of gap that Darrell bridged. He also designed most of the choreography. He’s a taskmaster, but he also looks out for you, as well as the rest of the boxer’s onset; constantly ensuring they’re all doing okay.” Earlier, the makers of ‘Toofan’ released a still from the movie of Farhan all decked up and dressed in blue boxing gear. The picture created a massive storm across all media. ‘Toofan` is an Excel Entertainment production in association with ROMP pictures and will be hitting the screens on 2nd October 2020.

WHAT IS A GIFT TAX AND HOW IS IT TREATED? A gift must be quite substantial before the IRS takes notice. In 2018, a gift of $15,000 or less in a calendar year doesn’t even count. The Mom and Dad can gift their child $15,000 each without any issues or worries and the inVaishali Thakkar laws can gift the couple an additional CEO Perfect Tax $15000 each. So the effective annual & Finance limit for a couple is $60000. Splitting these gifts up is an effective way to avoid paying gift tax. There are some gifts that don’t count or considered to be gifts, no matter what the amount. It is not a gift if it’s given to a husband or wife who is a U.S. citizen. Special rules apply to spouses who are not U.S. citizens though or if it’s paid directly to an educational or medical institution for someone’s medical bills or tuition expenses. (It doesn’t have to be a child, or even a relative, for this exception.) If someone gives you more than the annual gift tax exclusion amount ($15,000 in 2018), the giver must file a gift tax return. That still doesn’t mean they owe gift tax. Each year, the amount a person gives other people over the annual exclusion accumulates until it reaches the lifetime gift tax exclusion. As of 2018, a taxpayer does not pay gift tax until they have given away over $11.2 million in their lifetime ($5.49 million in 2017).

Ranveer Singh and Yash Raj Films are coming together on what he has called ‘a miracle script’ penned by debutant writer-director Divyang Thakkar. After Boman Irani, who is set to play Ranveer’s father in the film, veteran actress Ratna Pathak Shah has been roped for the role of his mother in Jayeshbhai Jordaar. Divyang Thakkar was one of the proteges of Ratna Pathak Shah in theatre and was keen on bringing her on board for the film. Ratna said that a young actor approached her a few months ago with a script. She said that actors making movies can be tricky so she began reading the script and was thoroughly entertained by the end of it. She said that the story not only had a message but also has a heart.

She made her Bollywood debut with Saif Ali Khan starrer Jawaani Jaaneman. Alaya F, who entered the B-Town with a Nitin Kakkar directorial is celebrated actress Pooja Bedi’s daughter. The newbie has been stormed by the nepotism debate and has been sailing smoothly with her wise responses. Considering she hails from a film family, not to forget, her grandfather is veteran actor Kabir Bedi, we asked her to name the star kids she has been good friends with. She says, “We all are sort of in the same circle. We keep exchanging pleasantries whenever we bump into at parties. However, most of my very, very close friends, the ones who I have been friends with since I was a kid are the people who are not in the public eye. I feel it is very important to have friends who are not from the industry because it gives you a good sense of balance. You are living in this world, and then you are still in that world if you have friends from the same field. For me, I like coming back to a different world as I spend time with them. My friends are engineers and from other such streams. They help me keep grounded.”

HEALTH

30 Simple Health Tips to Try Each Day of March UNLIKE “NATIONAL Pancake Month” or “National Whipped Cream Month,” National Nutrition Month is a yearly occasion that you can and should celebrate for 30 days straight. In fact, why stop at the end of March? I hope that, once you try the following tips, you’ll want to continue practicing them all year through. Here’s how it works: Try one tip each day, starting today. (You can change the order, but be sure you try each one.) Then, repeat.

1.

CUT PORTIONS - If you think leaving just a little something on your plate won’t matter, think again. It will. Small amounts of uneaten food add up to calories that stay on the plate – not on you. 2. SIP WHILE YOU SIT - Bring a cup or bottle of water with you whenever you sit (at your desk, in the car or in front of the TV, for example). Although moving is better than sitting, at least you’ll be performing a healthy habit when at rest. 3. MAKE A MOVE -Take the stairs, park a few blocks away or otherwise become inefficient and take extra steps to get where you need to go. 4. HAVE A VEGETABLE AT BREAKFAST - Most people save their veggies for dinner, but it’s healthful to think outside the cereal bowl and veg out at breakfast. For example, add a sliced tomato to your cheese sandwich or some mushrooms to your eggs. 5. FIND FIBER -Whether it’s a bran cereal, nuts, oatmeal or an array of other fiber-filled foods, added fiber can make you feel fuller longer and provide a, well, moving experience. 6. FLIP THE PACKAGE OVER - Read nutrition labels to see what’s really in your food. Don’t be fooled by a flashy front-of-package claim. 7. DON’T FEAR FAT – but don’t go overboard - Fat has more calories than other nutrients, but it has multiple benefits. If you watch your portions, you can enjoy its decadence. 8. DON’T HAVE GUILT AS A SIDE DISH - If you overindulge at a meal, move on. 9. BE MINDFUL - Unless you’re driving, close your eyes when you eat. Notice the food’s texture, temperature and flavor. 10. PICK PLANTS - Protein derived from plant sources such as seeds, nuts, tofu and tempeh, as well as from grains, can help lower cholesterol, improve your heart health and add a satiating blend of flavors to extend Meatless Monday to the rest of the week. 11. TAP INTO YOUR DARK SIDE - Dark chocolate has been shown to have heart-healthy benefits and it can certainly boost your mood. Be mindful of portions, though, to help keep yourself feeling happy. 12. EAT SOMETHING FISHY - Enjoy fish as a dish at least three times a week. It’s heart-healthy, low in fat and contains beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

DFW | March 2020 VOL 14 | 22

13. TAKE TIME FOR TEA - Tea contains polyphenols, it’s good for your bones and it provides a soothing cup of comfort in any season. 14. COOK WITH YOUR KIDS - Don’t think of this interaction as cooking lessons. Rather, realize that teaching your kids to put together a meal is a lesson they can use for the rest of their lives. 15. SHAKE THE SALTING HABIT - Replace salt with lemon, herbs and spices. 16. EAT WHEN YOU EAT - Try not to do simultaneous activities such as typing, watching TV or driving when you eat. You’ll appreciate each bite even more. 17. SLEEP MORE, WEIGH LESS - The more hours you’re awake, the more time you have to nosh. Lack of zzz’s can also mess with your hormone levels. 18. BE GOOD TO YOUR GUT - Include Greek yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir or foods high in fiber in your diet. 19. MAKE HEALTHY SWAPS - For instance, try mashed avocado instead of butter or use whole-wheat pastry flour in place of white, refined types. 20. GO NUTS- Nuts add crunch and decadent flavor to salads, veggie dishes, yogurt and even sandwiches via nut butters. Nuts can help reduce cholesterol levels and stabilize blood glucose levels. 21. INDULGE WITHOUT BULGE - Comfort foods in the right amounts and at the right times will provide what you’re looking for – comfort. Excessive amounts could lead to discomfort and unnecessary weight gain. Avoid portion distortion. 22. C HILL OUT - Frozen foods, particularly fruits and veggies, can be just as nutritious as fresh produce and, in some cases, they may be even better. 23. HAVE A SUPERFOOD - Most superfoods can be found in the produce aisle – they’re not fancy and they don’t even wear food labels. Add a fruit or veggie to each meal. 24. SHARE A MEAL - Try ordering your own appetizer but split the main dish with a friend. 25. GET BIG ON BEANS - Beans are the most undervalued food in the supermarket. They are inexpensive, easy to store, rich in protein and fiber, and taste so good. Add some to your soup tonight. 26. DO SOMETHING - Don’t call it exercise – call it fun. Dance, ride a bike, take the dog for a long walk or just climb the steps in your home or apartment. 27. COOK SOMEONE A MEAL - There’s no better way to show you care than to make the effort to cook for somebody you care about. 28. KEEP A FOOD DIARY - Most people don’t realize how much they really consume in a day. If you write it down, the amount you eat may surprise you. 29. MAKE SNACKS COUNT - Be sure your snack consists of protein, whole grains and healthy fat for the trifecta that will keep you feeling fuller longer. 30. BE KIND TO YOURSELF - If you’re not having a great day, don’t “reward” yourself with food – the wrong foods in the wrong amounts may become punishments instead of rewards. Take a bath, write a letter, surround yourself with true friends or buy yourself something that will make you smile. You deserve to have a wonderful month – and a fabulous rest of the year.

‘Tejas’

angana Ranaut looks courageous and commanding as an Indian Air Force pilotA couple of weeks ago Kangana Ranaut had announced that she will be portraying the role of Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot in the film titled ‘Tejas’. Now, the makers of the film have unveiled the first look of the actress. ‘Tejas’ is the story of a daring fighter pilot, played by Kangana. The Indian Air Force was the first of the country’s defence forces to induct women into combat roles in 2016. The film takes inspiration from this landmark event.

In the photo, the actress is seen walking in style and looks stunning in IAF uniform with a fighter plane in the backdrop. Talking about the film, Kangana told Mumbai Mirror, “Very often, the sacrifices made by our brave women in uniform go unnoticed by the nation. Tejas is a film where I have the honour of playing the role of one such Air Force pilot who puts country before self. I hope we instil a sense of patriotism and pride in the youth of today with this movie. I’m looking forward to the journey with Sarvesh and Ronnie on this one.” Integrity, courage and honour are the three pillars on which the story of Tejas is based. The script is crafted to make audiences feel the adrenaline rush that India’s brave soldiers experience daily, without once thinking of personal gain or needs. Following one of its core themes, Tejas brings an exhilarating account of what women can achieve when given a chance. Written and to be directed by Sarvesh Mewara, this is RSVP’s second film after Uri: The Surgical Strike that salutes the forces and aims to inspire the country at large. DesiPages

DISHA PATANI REVEALS HOW A BREAK UP MADE HER A ‘MESS’

D

isha Patani is known to be a rather reserved person. It’s not easy that Disha opens up about her personal life. With Malang coming up in a week from now, we decided to quiz the actress more about what she thinks about the matters of the heart. When asked to define love Disha says, “It’s very important and also a driving force. Everything you do in life is either for love or because of love. How can you even live without love?” She further adds, “I have fallen in love at first sight too. For me, it’s very important to fall in love. I love those feeling of those butterflies on the first day. If I don’t feel it on the first day, I feel it’s not there. The only time I feel like a girl is when I’m in a relationship. I’m looking for someone who makes me feel like a girl.” DesiPages

She’s a romantic at heart, she admits. “The smallest things matter to me. I love a small letter. All that I really like. I remember I made a proper film with music and memories of me and someone I was with. I made it on Movie Maker with a Humraah kind of a song.” Dealing with heartbreak too is difficult. Disha shares, “I was a big mess after my heartbreak. I’m a Gemini so we are never in between. We are either there or not there. But I guess the positive thing is once you are out, you’re out and there’s no turning back. There are no feelings that stay back.” Disha is rumored to be dating Tiger Shroff but the two have always maintained silence on the topic. DFW | March 2020 VOL 14 | 30

STARS REVEAL Kareena Kapoor Khan

Aparshakti Khurana

Kareena Kapoor Khan is undoubtedly a doting mother to Bollywood’s favorite celeb kid- Taimur Ali Khan. Taimur is an internet sensation and paps love to click his pictures whenever he steps out from his house. The actress is often busy with her work commitments so she travels around the globe and Tim Tim always accompanies her. In a recent interview with a leading daily, Bebo opened up about balancing work and spending time with Taimur.

Actor Aparshakti Khurana said he had a great time shooting for his quirky next release, Helmet. The film, co-starring Pranutam Bahl, is his first outing as a solo lead actor

She reportedly said that she learns something new every day from her son. She feels that motherhood doesn’t have a set formula. Bebo revealed that she and hubby Saif Ali Khan are often busy with work and in those times, Tim understands that his parents are working. Kareena often takes Taimur on sets when Saif is working as she hates to leave him alone. Bebo hopes that her son grows up to be an intelligent boy. She also talked about Taimur traveling with her and Saif. She reportedly said Taimur travels around all over India and the world with them and he has become quite the globetrotter. She feels he is going up to be a smart, intelligent, bright boy and they are trying to do our best as parents. Meanwhile, on the work front, Kareena was last seen in Raj Mehta’s Good Newwz. The film also featured Akshay Kumar. Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani. She will be seen next in Karan Johar’s Takht with Bhumi Pednekar, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Anil Kapoor, and Janhvi.

“I think these all are wishes of my family, colleagues and the audience that all these things are happening to me. If Helmet connects with the audience then people might think about whether I should play lead roles or not. If it does not connect, then people will say that it was too early for me to do a lead-hero film and I should have done two to three films in supporting roles. So, it’s all very situational. Having said that, I had a great time shooting for Helmet. Whatever I have seen and heard about it, it’s all going great,” said the actor. Aparshakti has carved his niche as a fine actor and comedian with some interesting character roles and was recently seen in the dance hit, Street Dancer 3D. “This is the first time, I played an emotional character. I have always played comic characters in films. When I used to do theatre, I used to do a lot of dark and intense roles but when I started working in films, I continuously have been doing comic characters and that was a bit weird. I had fun while playing an emotional character in this film and I feel glad that it connected with the audience,” he said. Helmet, his first outing as a leading man, is directed by Satram Ramani.

TIG E R S H R O F F CARRYING REAL WEAPONS FOR

BAAGHI 3 Playing that one man who fights with an entire nation in Baaghi 3 was quite taxing for Tiger Shroff. The actor who shot in Serbia amid a frosty cold weather and shot some really gruelling sequences wrote a note on social media after returning to Mumbai. “Glad came out of those 40 days in one piece,” it read. That gives you an idea of how difficult it must have got. And why not, when you need to keep so fit that the veins of your body show and your body fat percentage is below 6, even with limited chances to work out! We earlier told you how he managed to do that. Rather than depending on visual effects, all the action sequences were shot live. While speaking to a leading daily, the actor revealed that he ran through real explosions while real tankers were targeted at him, and the weapons that he carried were real too. The actor shared that it wasn’t easy carrying guns weighing 5-10 kgs in both hands. But given that director Ahmed Khan and the entire team put their best efforts, and he had to pull off as well. The film, also starring Shraddha Kapoor, Ankita Lokhande and Riteish Deshmukh, releases on 6th March 2020.

BRAZIL olourful and vivacious, there’s no disputing Brazil and its people know how to live life to the fullest, and nothing confirms that more than Rio Carnival. Thought to be the biggest on the planet, attracting millions of revellers every year, it’s a whirlwind of sequins, floats and a lotta, lotta fun. As you’re in Brazil anyway, you might as well see what else this South American giant has going for it. After visiting Sugarloaf Mountain and Cristo Redentor. Why not travel to Paraty? Meander down its cobbled streets, taking in the colonial architecture that makes it one of the Costa Verde’s most charming towns. Or catch the ferry to Ilha Grande and spend a day or two relaxing in sun, swimming and sailing your way around the island.

MYANMAR rom the bustling streets of Yangon to the serenity of Inle Lake – it’s easy to see why diverse Myanmar is fast becoming one of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations. And as it happens, February has sightseeing-friendly temperatures and lower chances of monsoon-style downpours too. Not sure what this mysterious country has to offer? Allow us to give you a taster… Get ready to be blown away by sunsets over the temple-studded plains of Bagan and be wowed by the beauty of the golden Shwedagon Paya. Meet Buddhist monks on top of Mandalay Hill, stroll through vibrant green rice paddies in Shan State, sample deliciously spicy local cuisine and boat to the floating markets (to name but a few of Myanmar’s delights).

SINGAPORE ot only is Singapore at its least rainy, least humid and mostly sunny in February, than at any other time of the year, but it also marks the celebration of Chinese (Lunar) New Year. Marina Bay becomes filled with stilt-walkers and lion dancers, and the streets are lined with brightly coloured paper lanterns. Whilst still being a fairly new nation, this hasn’t stopped Singapore establishing itself as a cultural icon that travellers flock to. Learn how this city-state came to be in the mind-blowing Singapore History Gallery at the national museum. Go for a treetop walk through Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay. Don’t forget to dig into a traditional Indian thali or indulge in a spot of latenight shopping at the 24-hour Mustafa Centre in Little India too.

ZANZIBAR f it’s a bit of well-deserved R&R (rest and relaxation) you’re after, head for the sun, sea and sands of paradisiacal Zanzibar. In February the days are warm, and the water is at its clearest, making it the perfect spot for keen snorkelers and divers. Unearth pristine coral reefs that are home to hawksbill turtles, rays, parrotfish, cuttlefish and more. You may even be lucky enough to spot dolphins too. Diving, not your thing? Not a problem, there’s plenty more to explore on this Tanzanian archipelago. Take a trip to the heady Spice Islands, visiting the clove farms that reside here. Hike through the Ngezi Rainforest in search of vervet monkeys, or take a trip to the secluded village of Mkia Ya Ngombe for a glimpse of local life.

I

MEXICO here’s no denying Mexico is massive! Its size means temperatures and weather vary across the country throughout the year, making it tricky to pinpoint the best time to travel. Whilst February marks the middle of winter here, it’s still mild and (more importantly) dry – perfect for taking in the sights and enjoying time on the beach. Aside from all the usual amazing highlights i.e. uncovering quaint San Cristobal de las Casas, heading to Mexico City’s museums and discovering its many Mayan ruins. February also offers the chance to witness two incredible wild events. The monarch butterfly migration as they make the journey to Canada, and the arrival of humpback, blue and grey whales for breeding off Mexico’s Pacific coast.

AKSHAY KUMAR SOORYAVANSHI

A

source close to the project says, “The trailer of Sooryavanshi will be out on March 2. The makers are aware that the buzz for the film is insane. After all, it has superstar Akshay Kumar and director Rohit Shetty coming together for the first time. Also, it is a part of Shetty’s cop universe, a franchise that has become very big. Sooryavanshi releases on March 27 but they are confident that a 25-day window is enough for promotions.”

The source also adds, “Akshay Kumar’s lucky number is 9. The date 02-03-2020 adds up to 9. As a result, he is keen to get the trailer out on this day. Even February 27 was selected for the same reason for the launch. The previous Akshay Kumar’s film, Good Newwz, released on December 27 and its trailer was out on November 18. Also, the trailer of his 2019 Independence Day release Mission Mangal was also out on July 28. All these dates add up to 9. So, he wants to continue with this tradition.” Sooryavanshi also stars Katrina Kaif, Jacloe Shroff, Gulshan Grover and Sikandar Kher. The character of Sooryavanshi was introduced in the climax of Ranveer DesiPages

Singh-starrer Simmba. This makes him the third character of the cop universe, the first being Singham, played by Ajay Devgn. Interestingly, Simmba had got a boost as it also had Singham’s character coming to the rescue in the climax. In Sooryavanshi, the madness is expected to go one step forward. It features both Singham and Simmba. On the first anniversary of Simmba in December 2019, the team of the film released a teaser that showed a small glimpse of all three super cops coming together in an exciting gun battle, presumably in the finale of Sooryavanshi. Those few seconds of visuals created a frenzy and fans along with the trade and industry hoping that the trailer will be even more exhilarating.

Legend of Mahashivarathri

There is no better time than Maha-Shiva-Rathri or the “Great Night of Lord Shiva” to try to unravel the mystical enigma that surrounds Mahadev.

The Divine Trinity: Hindu mythology is based

on the underlying belief of the Divine Trinity – Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, Vishnu the protector of the good and Shiva the destroyer of evil. All three forms are the manifestation of divine energy. When the energy manifests in the mind and intellect, it represents Brahma. When the divine takes human form as an avatar, it represents Vishnu and the absolute cosmic consciousness represents Shiva.

The Mysterious Aura: Shiva has an aura of mystery, which surrounds his persona. He is an embodiment of paradoxes; the Lord of both destruction and transformation; the Master of penance and the source of the Cosmic Masculine. With his abode being in the Kailash peak of the holy Himalayan mountains, Shiva is the Lord of the creatures (Pashupathi).

As Chandrasekhara, Shiva adorns the crescent moon in his matted locks, which was also the gateway for the Ganges to flow from heaven to earth. As Nilakantha, Shiva was the blue-throated one who contained the poison of the world in his throat to bestow the nectar of immortality. Shiva’s vehicle is Nandi- the meditative bull that symbolizes dharma or the cosmic law of the universe. Nandi exemplifies waiting with patience and having faith in divine timing.

Yogiraja: Shiva is considered Yogiraja- the King

MADHURI’S MUSINGS

endeavor. In this form, Lord Shiva is an ascetic, seated in lotus position (Padmasana) engaging in deep meditation, and guiding his devotees on the path to supreme consciousness. He is depicted with a third eye on his forehead, which symbolizes the destruction of worldly illusions and the center of inner vision and divine wisdom.

Natraja: Shiva is the cosmic dancer who

danced the eternal dance that rocked the universe, crushing the elements of ignorance and egoism, and bridging the gaps of time and space in the rhythm of his tapping feet.

Lord of Cosmic Sound: From the depths

of silence emerges the primordial sound of the universe. Mythology has it that when Shiva reached the heights of supreme consciousness, the sound of Him beating on his drum rang through the earth giving birth to the sound Om. This makes him the master of the cosmic vibration from which all other Vedas and divine chants are derived. Chanting Om Nama Shivaya can elevate devotees to a higher plane of spiritual thought.

Shiva-Shakthi: Shiva the Cosmic Masculine

along with Shakthi the Divine Feminine represents the totality of the Divine Infinite – the highest power that transcends the universe. Legend has it that this day of Mahashivarathri was the day when Shiva and Parvathi were united in holy matrimony and hence represents the most powerful moment in time. It is also the day Shiva performed his cosmic dance the Tandava. Some believe that this was also when Shiva manifested himself as the Lingam on earth. Mahashivarathri is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar culturally, spiritually and scientifically (due to the planetary positions which make it the darkest night of the year). Tradition dictates that on this day, devotees keep vigil through the night chanting Shiva mantras to raise their spiritual vibration. Abhishekam of the Lingam is performed and devotees whisper their intentions and wishes to Mahadev in hopes for fulfillment. Glory be to Lord Shiva who as Tryambhakam (the Three-eyed One), when invoked upon, will help us to spiritually awaken, discover our mission on earth, show us the path to liberation, and reveal the secrets of life, death and immortality.

When elementary kids of 4th and 5th grades win at the FIRST Lego League, it sure is a time to celebrate, but it is also worth looking behind the scenes, to find out what goes into preparing these little kids for a competition of such large scale. The Wize Marvel Engineers Team won the Strategy and Innovation Award at the 2019-2020 First Lego League North Texas Regional, exhibiting programing & technology skills, and at the same time poise and mental skills of handling pressures of the timeline while working as a team. This was their first ever external competition. As Person in Focus from our community, Funasia DesiPages brings to you two dedicated and passionate people who are behind these little minds. Their dream is to carve these next generation kids to take on the world with poise, confidence and intelligence.

Vishal Bhasin & Venus Bhasin

The idea initiated five years back, when Venus & Vishal Their approach of focusing on holistic development

Bhasin, parents of 2 kids (7 & 4) with one on the way (3rd child was born in Dec 2015), were in their full-time jobs. They wanted to empower their children with the know-how of using technology to express themselves and unleash their creativity, and to grow as creators and not just the users of technology. However, they couldn’t find any relevant programs for elementary school students. While there were programs for older kids, but nothing though elementary. So, they started a coding class for their and their friends’ children in the media room of their house which they furnished very creatively to ensure a fun environment for young learners. Children enjoyed it while learning and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive from just the 6 kids they coached. This gave them the encouragement to take the next step and form Wize Computing Academy®. Over the next year or so they added locations, formed a team and most importantly created a project-based curriculum from ground up that was fun for kids and also followed rigorous computer science standards. Larger adoption of their program over the next couple of years allowed them to leave their jobs to work on this idea full-time. They approached the schools for their after-school programs and offered camps during school breaks at multiple locations within the metroplex.

of every child hit home with school administrators and in a small amount of time they were able to expand rapidly. Now they have expanded further by franchising their concept and they have franchisees across the US and Canada.

Their goal is to prepare students to apply computing

concepts to address real-world problems. Vishal pointed out that growing up, expressing ideas were 2-dimensional - through papers and pencil. But today, technology enables us to express our creativity in multiple dimensions and extend it using virtual and augmented reality. Learners today can create 3D objects, voiceovers, videos and animations with relative ease. Most parent thinks that screen time is bad. “It is bad if we are just consumers, but not if we can channelize the kids to be creators using the same screen time” he says.

They engage young learners in coding and robotic

thru their favorite game like Minecraft or Roblox, and thru cool-looking robots, drones, 3D images and virtual reality. Once the children are engaged, they work on their logical thinking, creative reasoning skills along with cognitive skills like hand eye co-ordination, focus, self-esteem, confidence & presentation skills. They are laser focused on ensuring that every child

The Wize Marvel Engineers Team after winning the Strategy and Innovation Award at the 2019-2020 First Lego League North Texas Regional

gets the development opportunity that their program provides. Vishal gives his 7-year-old daughter’s example who when asked to give a presentation would finish it in just about 30 seconds, but can now make 15 minutes long interesting presentations with confidence. This approach of ensuring that kids participate & express themselves thru these minTED talks, and that they stand behind their work with confidence resonates with parents and school administrators.

When asked about their roles as couples in the business that is now growing, Venus laughs and says that they wear two hats every weekday. One, at 9:00 am when they start their day at Wize Computing Academy as colleagues, and the other in the evening, when they become couples again. Vishal also adds that he finds it interesting that by working together they discovered their complimentary skills which makes it easy for them to focus on specific areas of business based on their strengths.

Being from the Indian Heritage, and the joint-

The duo are huge believers in STEAM for girls. They

family system they also stress on learning from Grandparents who can invest more time into their grand kids. Through this program they also bring the two generations together where both learn from each other.

Venus mentions how proud she is of her winning

team who demonstrated some outstanding poise and core values at the event impressing the judges. They were competing with much older middle schoolers and had great teamwork and co-ordination. She gives an example, when they were asked how did their parents help them? They said, “They helped by giving critical feedback. That was surely a profound statement. They bagged the Exemplary Awards in Core Value, Project Innovation & Robot Game and made it to the regionals. At the regionals they won the Strategy and Innovations Award.

are disappointed when parents only enroll their boys in these programs but not girls. Their dream is to get the right balance and have a 50-50 ratio in every session. Their ultimate goal is to ensure that such project & inquiry-based program is available to 100% of the population and not just select few. The skills young ones learn in these programs empowers them to create the world of tomorrow and prepares them for the jobs for 21st century.

It was fascinating for me to be in conversation with

these two passionate creators who are getting into the little minds, developing them in a wholesome manner, so that they can face the future better. We wish Vishal and Venus luck and success in their endeavors. Interviewed & Written by: Navneeta Khemka

Maturity is Accepting the Cost of Being Oneself “Be the person you are. Never try to be another, and you will become mature. Maturity is accepting the cost of being oneself, whatsoever the cost.” This is one of Osho’s quotes we should keep in mind each and every day. Being who other people want us to be isn’t maturing. It means trying to please people, seeking approval, and lastly, it’s betraying ourselves. A mature person accepts themselves and, above all, they take responsibility for themselves in every sense. They don’t play the role of victim, they play the protagonist, and they act accordingly. They don’t wait for things to happen, they build their own destiny. They’re also not unaware of their mistakes, but they see them as a chance to learn -OSHO-.
